4 out of 5 stars Encouraging and Uplifting.......2007-03-29

In the format of the bestselling series, breast cancer survivor Mary Olsen Kelly has gathered snippets of courage, healing and hope into categories like "Love," "Challenges," "Character," "Survival" and "Gratitude." Each story is written in a different voice and, though some are far better than others, all provide an important perspective and insight into this devastating illness.

A powerful source of encouragement for survivors, family, friends and all who love them.

5 out of 5 stars Support Group Between Two Covers.......2007-01-15

As the co-author of this book, I have to thank the amazing story contributors who wrote deep and moving stories about their journey through breast cancer in order to help those who have been newly diagnosed, their families and friends. This book would not have been possible without their courage, strength, and humor. Yes, there are a lot of funny stories in here too. It was an honor to work with such talented and generous women survivors (and one man) who are all surviving and thriving. This book is inspiring, it gives you a lift and lets you know that as you go through the often scary treatments for breast cancer, you are not alone.

5 out of 5 stars A Gift For A Friend.......2007-01-04

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is a breast cancer survivor. However, I did read the book before I gave it to her. It was very inspirational, supportive and encouraging. I was greatly uplifted by this book, as I am by all of the Chicken Soup books. They are wonderful books and very needed in a world that tends to focus on the negative. These books are a great reprieve from some of the ugliness that we have to deal with in our every day lives. Thank you Jack Canfield.

I bought this book several months after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a comfort for me to read about other experiences that were positive. It is a club that nobody wants to belong to but...it is a club filled with wonderful people.

Book Description

It must be a part of human nature to love drama. We never would have sold as many records -- and we never would have been this popular -- if our member changes did not happen. Up until that point, we were squeaky-clean nice girls who couldn't get on the cover of any magazines. --Beyoncé Knowles

They're beautiful, they're talented, they're bootylicious . . .

From first kisses and broken hearts to pillow fights and legal battles to losing friends and finding strength in God, Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams share it all. Their example of survival has made Destiny's Child one of the most beloved, bestselling female groups ever.

Here for the first time, the three share the struggles that have made them stronger, from Beyoncé's battles with weight loss and shyness, Kelly's coming to terms with growing up without a dad, and Michelle's triumph over grade-school bullies. They've grown up under the media microscope, and have had to deal with lineup changes and media rumors. Now they set the record straight.

The demands and drama, the schedules and scrutiny -- from the tour bus to the dressing rooms to backstage at awards shows, Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle talk about what it takes to be successful. Whether it's changing outfits in the rain, changing their hair color, or changing a name, they've done it.

Don't be mistaken, they're not a prefab group of young girls -- they're smart, independent women with a lot of soul. When these ladies had only minutes of studio time to work with Wyclef Jean to remix one of their songs, they didn't stress, they just started singing faster -- and the result was a unique sound that put them on the map. Everyone has caught on to the Destiny's Child groove -- Whitney Houston, Bono, and Michael Jackson have all given them props, and the King of Pop himself serenaded them with a rendition of “Bootylicious.”

Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle take you behind the scenes of a video rehearsal at which Aaliyah rewound their practice music, to the set of Austin Powers 3, where a starstruck Beyoncé felt anything but foxy before auditioning for the part of Foxxy Cleopatra, and backstage at the Grammys, where a last-minute costume change fiasco nearly kept Michelle from going onstage.

With total honesty, these soul survivors not only dish the details of their past, but share their hopes, plans, and dreams for the future.

5 out of 5 stars DC3.......2005-03-21

I READ THIS BOOK AND I WAS SHOCKED AT HOW GOOD IT WAS. IT TALKED ABOUT THE MEMBERS OF DESTINY'S CHILD AND THEIR LIVES AT HOME AS WELL AS ON THE ROAD. IT TALKED ABOUT THE MEMBER CHANGES AND WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. IT TALKED ABOUT THEIR STRUGGLES WITH GETTING A RECORD DEAL AS WELL AS THE STRUGGLES WITH THE MEDIA. I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT TALKED ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT THE MAGAZINES DONT.IT MADE ME FEEL AS IF I KNEW THEM. IF ASKED IF I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO A FRIEND I WOULD BECAUSE IT'S AND EXCELENT BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars the best book!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-01-05

It is a great book. I definetly recommend it. It tells what happened with the group members, first kisses, boyfriends. I never ever wanted to read a book,{BECAUSE I AM NOT A GOOD READER} but when i got the book i couldnt put it down. I read it in one day and i am a slow reader. They didnt say anything bad about farrah, letoya, or latavia. I WOULD always recommend you to get the book, and it is worth every penny. You wont be disappointed. Also it tells about their childhood, with pics which is cool.

P.S: You can have a opinion but dont hate, appreciate. Also u will probably hurt their feeling so dont say anything stupid.

5 out of 5 stars very good book.......2004-03-12

the book is very good i want to read over and over again and i like how they put pictures in the middle of the book and they talk about their child hood but they talk to much about the break up but not the future and what they have accomplished as a group with out the other members but i would recomend this book

4 out of 5 stars It's Pretty Good.......2003-02-10

I enjoy Destiny's Child, and I thought it would be interesting ot read about them. It was a good book mostly, and you learn a lot about these three members, like their childhood, early life, school years, how they joined Destiny's Child, and more. What was strange to me was the title of this book. I really am not sure that these three rich woman who are famous all around the world are really "soul survivors". What did they survive? Sure, they lost three group members but that's about it. Another thing that bothered me was that the book was mostly Beyonce this, Beyonce that. She did most of the writing, or should I say talking because they just told their story to James Patrick Herman, who actually wrote it. Also, it seems like the book is mainly about her. So what, she writes their songs and is their (Destiny's Child) lead singer. It dosn't mean she should always get all of the attention! Overall, the book is great, but I think big Destiny's Child fans would like it the most.

2 out of 5 stars Destiny's child are talented.......2003-02-02

The book gave a look into the lives of the group destiny's child and the women. I just don't feel it. I think the only way to be really honest is to have the ex-members tell there side a well. If it's not that way then you're really getting a one sided story. And I need to hear everybody's piece. I think they are talented and everything, but really you are just throwing away money if you get this. Money that could be in your pockets. Please do not keep slipping further into idol worship. This are just people. Some of ya'll need to really calm down. Some girl was going off. Like she was a friend of those girls. Just like she, said she don't know them personally either. So how can she try to make it like they are just survivors, no. They really honestly didn't lose anything. Everybody is picked, shy sometimes, and grows up without a father. Just because they are stars do not make there story more heart touching. I need to hear from everybody to know the truth. That's just me. So For all of ya'll obsessed crazy fans. Please, calm down. It ain't that serious, really. Remember they are just people, psychos.

Book Description

Soul Survivors gives voice to the women and children who stayed in Cambodia after the genocide (1975-1979), when nearly two million people died from execution, starvation, or disease. It also includes the stories of two refugees who came to the US as orphans, returning as young adults to help their country. These engaging personal narratives reveal that hope and kindness survived the darkest period of Cambodia's recent history.

Sixty-four photographs draw the reader into contemporary Cambodia to witness the survivors' courageous work to rebuild their lives, families, and culture in one of the poorest nations of the world. Soul Survivors includes a chronology of Cambodian history, a map, and an index. Additional chapters describe the Khmer Rouge, the role of the US, the landmine situation, and the Buddhist peace movement.

5 out of 5 stars "Soul Survivors" - A Truly Inspirational Work.......2002-06-27

"Soul Survivors" brought the horror of the Cambodian genocide to me in a way that the modern media never has. In a world where the news numbs society to mass murder and political unrest, "Soul Survivors" left me unable to remain numb to these atrocities. The book focuses on personal stories from a wide range of survivors of the genocide - stories that are essential to gaining a true understanding of how genocide affects a nation and culture. When I closed the book, I was filled with the kind of restless compassion that only comes from truly learning about the pain of another people and culture. "Soul Survivors" was an inspirational book and really made me want to change the world - something that every great book should do.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Inspirational.......2002-06-14

The stories are very inspiring, the photos are great, and the book itself is well done from the cover on.

5 out of 5 stars A work of courage and compassion.......2002-05-03

This book offered me a chance to face a devastating period of human history with courage, compassion, and determination to make the world a better place. It tells the story of women and children who endured the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s and managed to rebuild their lives afterward. It includes the stories of two refugees who came to the United States as orphans, returning as young adults to help their country. In a series of personal narratives, the author lets these survivors tell their own stories in their own words, and there are accompanying photographs that give a wonderful added glimpse at their lives. Wagner also provides some brief but helpful political context for the suffering in Cambodia. Living as we are in a time of so much hatred and conflict and fear, Soul Survivors reaffirms the futility of violence and helped remind me of the possibility of redemption and reconciliation.

2 out of 5 stars Too academic.......2007-09-22

This book dissapointed me in so far as I thought it was too academically written. It failed to capture my imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Mr. Leslie........2007-08-14

I have often wanted to write a thank you note to Mr. Leslie for this wonderful book. It is a touchstone for me. I re-read it once in a while to remind myself of the strength of the human spirit, the determination of character and the resourcefulness of our species. It also gives you something to think about when you think YOU are having problems! I appreciate that Mr. Leslie never assigns any of the successful survivals to the intervention of a devine being. To the contrary, scoundrals seem to fair better at the survival game than those who believe they have somewhere better to go. Certainly a keen interest in your own best interests and a refusal to give up on yourself is a factor in most of these stories. In short, this book is a guide book on survival for anyone who is mortal. Add to all this the fact that Mr. Leslie is a very talented writer and researcher, and you have a book that is a great read and refreshing to your soul. Thanks, Mr. Leslie.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and well-written.......2007-02-18

This is a gripping account of how castaways and survivors struggle with nature and, sometimes, man. It is a huge book and I agree that the author could have eliminated the last section of the book. Actually, he should have written two books, one of them on the detailed survival of people like Alexander Selkirk and Herman Melville and the other book a short one on modern survivalists.

This is because the last section of the book is a different format than the first much larger section. On the last section, the author provides only brief synopsis of events and facts and most of them are WWII related nature-related survivals. I would have suggested that he expand one of two of the stories and save the others for another book.

However, what I enjoyed most about this book is the author's writing. He often used a turn of phrase that was unique, humorous and subtle. Don't get me wrong - the book is not humorous but the author has inserted a comment or phrase periodically that summed up someone's plight or segued into their next calamity. I found it very enjoyable and would mark the pages because I enjoyed that writing so much.

I enjoy this genre and know that well written books in this genre are a rarity so I gave this book 5 stars. Whether you like this genre or not, you will enjoy this book!

5 out of 5 stars unforgettable and gripping!.......2005-10-26

this is one of the few books i've read that i can't get out of my mind. i keep thinking about the different stories. i lend it out far too often! you don't have to read it all at once; it's a great book to dip into.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, readable and amazing.......2005-09-20

A very good book. The author writes in a way that holds your attention from the begining to end. Almost to the end, because he loses rhythm in the last chapter. But this does not reduce its value.

If you like knowing about how people behave under extreme situations, this is the book.

Like many Christians, Philip Yancey has often felt kicked around, abused, and damaged by the institutional church. And like many Christians, he has found solace in reading about and getting to know some extraordinary individual believers. He profiles 13 of those believers in Soul Survivor: How My Faith Survived the Church. "I became a writer, I now believe, to sort out words used and misused by the church of my youth," Yancey writes in the book's first chapter. The church of his youth, which described itself as "New Testament, Blood-bought, Born-again, Premillennial, Dispensational, fundamental," Yancey now describes as a frightening place where racism and bigotry were regularly preached from the pulpit. After graduating from Bible college, Yancey became a writer and chose to direct his attention to "people I could learn from, people I might want to emulate," such as C. Everett Koop and Robert Coles. He also read widely and passionately--Leo Tolstoy, Martin Luther King Jr., G.K. Chesterton, and Annie Dillard, to name a few. Soul Survivor offers probing, honest profiles of 13 individuals who have "helped restore to me the mislaid treasures of God." For most readers, these profiles will serve as starting points to explore the lives and minds of the individuals who have inspired Yancey. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

Philip Yancey, whose explorations of faith have made him a guide for millions of readers, feels no need to defend the church. "When someone tells me yet another horror story about the church, I respond, 'Oh, it's even worse than that. Let me tell you my story.'I have spent most of my life in recovery from the church."

Yancey acknowledges that many spiritual seekers find few answers and little solace in the institutional church. "I have met many people, and heard from many more, who have gone through a similar process of mining truth from their religious past: Roman Catholics who flinch whenever they see a nun or priest, former Seventh Day Adventists who cannot drink a cup of coffee without a stab of guilt, Mennonites who worry whether wedding rings give evidence of worldliness."

How did Yancey manage to survive spiritually despite early encounters with a racist, legalistic church that he now views as almost cultic? In this, his most soul-searching book yet, he probes that very question. He tells the story of his own struggle to reclaim belief, interwoven with inspiring portraits of notable people from all walks of life, whom he calls his spiritual directors. Soul Survivor is his tribute to thirteen remarkable individuals, mentors who transformed his life and work.

Besides recalling their effect on him, Yancey also provides fresh glimpses of the lives and faith journeys of each one. From the scatterbrained journalist G. K. Chesterton to the tortured novelists Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, to contemporaries such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Annie Dillard, and Robert Coles, Yancey gives inspiring portraits of those who modeled for him a life-enhancing rather than a life-constricting faith.

"I became a writer, I now believe, to sort out and reclaim words used and misused by the Christians of my youth," Yancey says. "These are the people who ushered me into the Kingdom. In many ways they are why I remain a Christian today, and I want to introduce them to other spiritual seekers."

Soul Survivor offers illuminating insights that will enrich the lives of veteran believers and cautious seekers alike. Yancey's own story, unveiled here as never before, is a beacon for those who seek to rejuvenate their faith, and for those who are still longing for something to have faith in.

Let me therefore merely recommend it to anyone interested in a relaxed and conversational account of how an assortment of odd fish were variously caught up in and transformed by the Christian Gospel."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!.......2007-05-15

This book is amazing. Gets to the heart of Christianity through the lives and actions of people that have shown God's love to our world. They are unlikely mentors but each one gave me a new or renewed faith in the one living God.

5 out of 5 stars God Uses All Types of People.......2007-02-26

Phil Yancy gives credit to 13 people for demonstrating to him how God made them impactful in his life for securing his faith. Telling their stories also provides to the reader a challenge to similarly allow God to use her or him. Although these 13 people are Yancy's favorite heroes of his faith, they are also effective role models for the rest of us. Even though we may not have the opportunities for the unusual impact that these 13 people had, we are challenged to use what we have and the opportunities we are given to serve God as He wants. There is also an encouraging variety of people types and demonstrations of faith.

5 out of 5 stars A book that deepened my faith like few others.......2007-01-11

Soul Survivor is one of my very favorite Christian books. I will continue to purchase copies to give to my Christian and non-Christian friends. The book focuses on the PRINCIPLES of Jesus and how they can be applied in daily living - and have been successfully applied by Christian and non-Christians over the years. I really love this book.
Plus, of course - Philip Yancey is a really wonderful writer.
I divide Christian writers into two types: 1)those who start from the Bible and show how it can be applied in daily life and 2) those who write from experience (their own and others') and then show how the Bible relates. Philip Yancey is the latter type. And he does it in style!

5 out of 5 stars Faith.......2007-01-10

Of course, I have not read the book yet.
Your service, the condition of the book was in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars Yancey keeps messing with us.......2006-09-01

Of course Phil Yancey almost always messes with us in a good way. Pointing out some of the blind spots in the thinking of many evangelicals Yancey takes the unique approach of coming at Christianity through the side door. He cites unlikely authors and unexpected personalities -- just the kind of stuff that connects with those of us who are tired of the linear and the literal.

I love it when Yancey messes with my mind and my faith. It usually comes out stronger.

5 out of 5 stars Even the size is perfect!.......2007-01-20

Everything about this book, from the easy-to-read type to the important tips Mary shares to the actual size of the book -- just the right size to fit inside your purse and refer to whenever you need a boost -- really is right on the mark. I love the fact that there are other voices too, stories and info from other women who have gone through the journey and have this wisdom to share. Good book, brave book, important book.

5 out of 5 stars Captivates your soul.......2006-11-08

A look into the lives and hearts of real women around the world. Jean demonstrates that the strength and beauty of women transcends any challange that life may presents. She created a sisterhood of women across all walks of life and around the world.

5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting & Beautiful Book!.......2004-10-15

Ms. Karotkin's powerful photographs truly capture the spirit of her subjects, whose stories of coping with breast cancer are told through brief vignettes. This is an inspiring, provocative book that challenges American ideals of physical perfection and redefines what it means to be beautiful. I imagine "Body & Soul" will resonate with anyone who has either experienced breast-cancer first-hand or known someone who has; but I hope that all those teenage girls who aren't happy with their bodies will also read this book and take its message to heart.

4 out of 5 stars Important subject, good book, but wouldn't advise as a guide.......2004-08-09

I really appreciate that someone finally wrote a book specifically about lesbian survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The author clearly interviewed a lot of different women and made efforts to be sure that many different voices were heard. She also includes pieces of her own story and struggle which are honest and help give context to the book and whole project.
However, I think the word "guide" in the title may be slightly misleading. The book is more a presentation of research and reads a little bit like a dissertation. This had the effect for me of being a little overwhelming at times and I ended up scanning the last half of the book for useful advice. The book is written in a way that presents a paragraph or two of statistics or interpretive information/advice followed by anywhere from several paragraphs to several pages of quotes by the women she interviewed. At times, the segments are poorly organized and there is even some sloppy editing. I don't think any of this is a big deal, except that there is not enough clear or helpful information to be used as a guide. Also, so much of the information is unprocessed and uninterpreted that it left me feeling like I was holding tons of stories of horrible sexual abuse with no clue as to what to do with them. Also, the author only presents various quotes by each person she interviewed. She never presents a cohesive vignette or a narrative longer than a couple of sentences at a time. This left me trying to remember who was who and feeling like I only ever got to know pieces of people or ghosts of the whole person.
Again, this book is important because it addresses and reports on a subject yet to be written about. It should be used as a research source and a reference rather than a guide for survival for lesbian survivors of sexual abuse.

5 out of 5 stars Is Jenna Leaving Forensics?.......2006-02-24

The third book in the Body of Evidence Series, SOUL SURVIVOR, proves that sequels can be as good, if not better, than the original!

Jenna Blake is fighting to regain her balance at Somerset University. In only a few weeks, her world has been turned upside down: her best friend, Melody, was murdered; her father, a Professor, started dating; her half-brother, Pierce, was accused of murder; and her two good friends, roommate Yoshiko and Melody's brother, Hunter, have started going out. Her job with the M.E.'s office has been going well, but she still doesn't feel as if life is in perfect balance. She's feeling depressed, a little sorry for herself, and out of sorts.

Then weird murders start happening in Somerset and the neighboring town with overtones of ancient Hindu and mythological sacrifices. Dr. Slikowski asks Jenna to accompany him to murder scene, where he's been asked for his opinion, and Jenna is thrilled to be in the inner circle. Thrilled, that is, until the cops on the case make her out to be an imcompetent kid, someone to baby-sit the M.E., who's confined to a wheelchair. Dr. Slick puts them in their place, but Jenna is left with the feeling that as long as she's only eighteen, no one will take her seriously in this profession she's chosen to make her own.

As the murders progress, Jenna starts doing her own research into the rituals that the killings seem to be based on, and comes up with some of her own conclusions: the murderer is probably a woman, she's probably dying, and she's probably trying to take over another human body.

As Jenna works with Dr. Slikowski, M.E. employee Dyson, and Somerset detectives Audrey Gaines and Danny Mariano to figure out who is behind the murders, Jenna is once again put into a position where she's in danger. Add to that the fact that her crush on Detective Mariano is growing stronger while at the same time her feelings for fellow college student Damon are mixing themselves up, and Jenna's personal life is as tumultuous as her professional one.

SOUL SURVIVOR is another winner in Christopher Golden's Body of Evidence Series. I can't wait to see what happens next in Jenna's life, especially if she's going to leave the M.E.'s office, as the ending of this book implies.

A real winner!

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing Addition to the Series.......2004-01-15

Still grieving over the murder of her best friend, Melody, Jenna Blake returns to work assisting her boss, Dr. Slikowski, in the Medical Examiner's Office. This time there's a new killer, who is performing strange, ritualistic murders on innocent people. Hindu magick, Japanese mysticism, etc. Jenna starts boning up on research about the strange rituals, and finds out some very weird information. But between school, work, and a new twist in the Jenna Blake, student at Somerset University, and Danny Mariano, detective for the Somerset PD, "romance," Jenna is finding it hard to focus. And if she doesn't begin focusing soon, she may not survive her first semester of college.

I've never read a series whose sequels are just as good, if not better, than the first book. But Christoper Golden's A BODY OF EVIDENCE series has proved me wrong. Each book is better than the last. Filled with murder, intrigue, mystery, science, etc. Jenna Blake is an enjoyable chracter whom you are always rooting for, and you feel much the same about her friends. Fans of BODY BAGS and THIEF OF HEARTS have to read SOUL SURVIVOR. You will NOT be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another weird one? Count me in!.......2002-01-11

Another set of weird murders have hit Somerset. In each of the crime scenes, the killer leaves obvious markings that have to do with ancient rituals. M.E. assistant Jenna Blake helps police solve this new puzzle. Can she piece together clues and imformation from her research in time to identify and find the killer before the killer finds another victim?
There are many twist and turns thourghout this book, but it all eventually comes together and the ending makes sense. The discriptions are clear and vivid and they bring us back to the reality of murders. It starts with a bang and leaves you hanging at the end of every chapter. I've always liked how Chistopher Golden depicts his charaters and their thoughts and opinions. At the moment I can't think of anything bad about the book. I enjoyed reading this book. It is a nice edition to the "A Body of Evidence" series. I recomand it to anyone who has enjoyed any of the previous books in this series and anyone who just likes a good mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2002-01-02

A series of weird murders have accured in Somerset. All of which involved ancient rituals. Just what does this killer have in mind? M.E. asistant Jenna Blake helps police again with this new puzzle. Through her reasearch she must piece together clues and find the killer in time before he or she finds another victim.
The book was very intriguing and suspenseful. It has nice descriptions that bring you back to the reality of murders. The ending is unexpected, but it all fits together and makes sense. The charaters and their thoughts are portrayed nicely. There isn't anything I can think of that I didn't like in the book. This book is a nice edition to the Body of Evidence series. For anyone who has enjoyed the previous Body of Evidence books or just enjoys mysteries, this would be a good book to read.

4 out of 5 stars Soul Survivor.......2000-03-01

I like Christopher Golden's pace and style. His characters (except for the professor and her roommate)are solid and his descriptions are realistic. There are some weaknesses to the plot of this thriller, though. One is his treatment of the laitmotif. Although Golden did research on cults and rituals,he mixes them up and his confusion is noticeable. His concept of transmigration of the soul is too superficial. Explanations of the killer's motifs are very sketchy, caricaturesque at best. Then it's the unexpected twist he gives to the end. Not too convincing. It leaves you hanging, less surprised than annoyed at the mediocre resolution. I still recommend the book for aspiring writers to keep a open eye on what works and what doesn't in literature.
