In this compelling volume, Ravi Zacharias examines the mystery of evil. This brilliant writer and gifted teacher traces how secularization has led to a loss of shame, pluralization has led to a loss of reason, and privatization has led to a loss of meaning.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant...!.......2007-08-12

Leave it to Ravi Zacharias to put eloquently what all of us somehow feels. Something's gone wrong in our society -- it's not as kind as it used to be. Something's amiss. Ravi has tapped into that "something". As always, brilliantly thought out and argued. Always with compassion but never compromised.

5 out of 5 stars J.M. for W.M........2007-01-04

I love anything Ravi Zacharias writes. He brings you to the only conclusion possible in whatever spiritual truth he is presenting, and I love this. But greater still --- there is in Ravi Zacharias a truth that transcends intellect -- he genuinely loves the Lord he writes (or speaks) about. This makes his books or his sermons worth my attention.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book by Ravi Zacharias.......2006-10-21

"When we see our hearts as God sees them, we find His strength, not only to understand good and evil, but to act on it. The one who resists this truth has nowhere to turn." (p. 184)

Ravi Zacharias is a native of India, but got Saved and converted to Christianity as a young man. He is most famous as a public speaker for explaining and defending Christian concepts in an intellectually thoughtful context, mostly by debunking the faulty viewpoints of the opposition. Where other radio preachers and book authors are heavy on emotionally expounding upon Scripture, Ravi's unique approach focuses on intellectual discourse. He talks and reasons his way as to why Christianity and Bible teachings are correct, without necessarily using Scripture as the sole evidence, but rather by using logic and focused thinking. He teaches Bible truths and values using observations about society, history, and culture.

I personally find that Ravi is most concise and focused on the radio, not in his books, nevertheless, in his autobiography, WALKING FROM EAST TO WEST, Ravi says that DELIVER US FROM EVIL and THE REAL FACE OF ATHEISM are his bestselling books. I have read both, and I think this book, DELIVER US FROM EVIL, is his strongest work.

"It was not the Code of Hammurabi that touched America's conscience. Nor was it the intent or content of the Koran. By no stretch of imagination was it the pantheistic framework of Eastern mysticism. America's soul was indubitably formed in keeping with the basic assumptions and injunctions of this, the moral law of the Hebrews, which gave her a vision of history's linear thrust whereby she was to reconcile liberty with law." (p. 154)

In DELIVER US FROM EVIL, Ravi writes about the state of Western culture, which has largely abandoned Bible-based morality and thus also suffered the consequences which we must now try to redeem. "Freedom can be destroyed, not just by its retraction, but also by its abuse." (p. 86)

The popular concept that there are no absolute truths, and thus anything goes, morally speaking, is at the basis of today's sorry state of affairs, culturally speaking. "An ABSOLUTE is basically an unchanging point of reference by which all other changes are measured...RELATIVISM is, therefore, only another word for ANARCHY, and that is why truth itself becomes elusive when there is no longer a point of reference." (p. 219)

The danger is that without a commonly accepted standard of morality, our culture is constantly under attack from within, by people with unhappy, desperate hearts which know no peace, and who wish to enforce an absence of morality. "Rebellion that sees no sanctity in life's essence is a constant state of mind bespeaking a heart that will never be satisfied." (p. 136)

This can only be done by trying to build a consensus that there is no God, the Bible is not real, and all that exists and may be considered is the material world--ripped away from any spiritual meaning or purpose. "...secularization assumes that this world--the material world-- is all we have...secularism is the philosophy of choice for American intellectual and political life." (p. 23)

In the USA, where the the 1st Amendment has been perverted by religion haters to mean freedom FROM religion, the problem is one that we are living with everyday, and not for the betterment of society, but to its detriment. "Not only has secularization brought us a silent universe with no voice from without, it has also brought us a silence from within as it has redefined the whole role of conscience." (p. 56)

Have you ever been self-righteously confronted by someone defending morally reprehensible things, while condemning the concept of morality itself? "In an unbelievable and shocking turn of events we have moved from speaking out against certain moral choices to being pressured by political enforcement and the so-called tolerant cultural elite not only to accept what was once disapproved of, but to celebrate it. Allowance for people to determine their own moral destinies has been supplanted by the demand that even that which may be repugnant or offensive to one's moral sensitivities must be acclaimed and glorified." (p. 133)

The anti-Christian spirit of this age has increasingly, and secretively, turned to the power of a secular judicial system of government to try to enforce immorality and condemn morality. "...the power to create and enforce moral relativism has been placed into the hands of government. Political power is a strange place to entrust morality because proverbially politics is not synonymous with moral uprightness. The very institution that is distrusted most has now become the shaper of the soul." (p. 78)

These days, we are pretty far along the wrong path in our Western culture, and the good guys are very late in catching onto the game plan of the bad guys, to wit, the public school system has been taken over by secularist believers who get to teach their secular view of life while condemning a Christian worldview because it opposes their immoral behavior. "The whole point of state controlled education is that it gives to the government the power to shape the souls and write on the fresh slates of young hearts... to assume that they accept that responsibility from a posture of neutrality is to live under the most destructive illusion." (p. 138)

By the time I finished this book, I thought that Ravi explained how things got so bad in our culture, and that knowing that much, we are better equipped to understand and deal with the situation, which will basically require an act of God to straighten out, of course, but God will win in the end. Christians know how the Bible ends and the true believing Christians end up in Heaven, while what do the secularist have to look forward to in the end? Nothing, by their own perspective, and worse, eternal damnation from a Biblical viewpoint. You can't beat God in the end. "Throughout history the Word of God has remained firm; it rises up to outlive its pallbearers." (p. 190)

Amen that, Ravi, amen that.

5 out of 5 stars The rotten fruits of postmodernism.......2006-03-06

This book examines the Zeitgeist or spirit of the age, points out what is wrong with it and how to reverse the destructive trend. The modern era is taken as the period 1789 - 1989 and the Post-modern as the one that followed. The West is currently in the grip of the PoMo mindset, more so in Europe than in the USA.

Whereas reason was held as the highest value under modernism, it has been ridiculed by postmodernism where truth is considered to be extinct. Purpose and design were emphasized in modernism, but postmodernism emphasizes chance and randomness. The post-modern spirit considers values as relative and celebrates unreason and the loss of meaning. Deconstruction and contradiction are its gods.

Although the modern pursuit was inhospitable towards spiritual truth, debate was still possible because information was subject to induction and deduction. In the post-modern mentality the purpose of debate or dialogue is not to discover truth, since here facts have no legitimacy. Debate is therefore impossible.

The first section of the book is titled The Moods Of The Present; it explores the ideas and circumstances that gave birth to the current cultural struggle. The author rigorously investigates the PoMo mindset in the light of the fruits it has borne. This part contains interesting references to sources as varied as The Great Divorce and The Pilgrim's Regress by CS Lewis, the thoughts of GK Chesterton and even song lyrics by The Moody Blues (Question) and Carly Simon (Playing Possum).

The second section looks at voices from the past, those that have shaped Western culture down the ages. As postmodernism mocks the promise once offered by modernity, religion comes under even greater assault, partly because of the faults of politicised religion. Theocracy is not the answer. The real hope lies in a change of heart in the individual.

This section includes the poem Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley and an interesting quote by Peggy Noonan, among others. The author discusses the history of Manasseh, son of Hezekiah. Manasseh turned out to be one of the most evil kings in the history of ancient Judah. He was a practitioner of "multiculturalism,' introducing hideous habits like infanticide from the surrounding nations.

Zacharias provides a frightening description of what these sacrifices of children to Moloch must have been like. It shows how one person can lead millions into evil, when a nation ceases to think clearly. After Manasseh, the righteous King Josiah led the kingdom of Judah back to God again.

Section 3 explores the mystery of evil, with reference to the trial of Eichmann and popular culture like the movie Pulp Fiction in which murder is trivialized. The beautiful poem The Coming by R S Thomas is reproduced here, and the grace of God and the invitation to redemption are discussed.

Appendix A: The Ineradicable Word is a defence of the uniqueness and authority of the Bible, a brilliant apologetics for the veracity of the message in our Judeo-Christian scriptures. It deals inter alia with the transcultural nature of truth and the transformation of the soul.

Appendix B: Inextinguishable Light, deals with the structure of reason, certainty and the matter of absolutes. It includes a quote from Malcolm Muggeridge warning of the spiritual plague of relativism. It explains the relationship of logic - reason - truth and the Word as truth in the battleground of the heart.

The book concludes with an Annotated Bibliography of the Bible, Notes by chapter and a Study Guide with questions to use as a workbook. I also recommend Sinisterism by Bruce Walker, While Europe Slept by Bruce Bawer, Menace in Europe by Claire Berlinski, The Dragons Of Expectation by Robert Conquest, The Force Of Reason by Oriana Fallaci, The West's Last Chance by Tony Blankley and Our Culture: What's Left Of It by Theodore Dalrymple.

5 out of 5 stars a great read for critical thinkers of the Christian faith.......2005-01-15

this book is a great tool for critical thinkers of the Christian faith. Ravi Zacharias delivers a compelling although often wordy description of how pluralism has degraded and made a mockery of absolute truth.

Book Description

As Americans face the ongoing war against terrorists and their state sponsors around the world, Sean Hannity reminds us we must also cope with the continuing scourge of accommodation and cowardice at home. With his trademark blend of passion and hard-hitting commentary, he urges Americans to recognize the dangers of putting our faith in toothless "multilateralism" when the times call for decisive action. He believes that only through strong defense of our freedoms, at home and around the world, can we preserve America's security and liberty in the dangerous twenty-first century.

"Evil exists," Hannity believes. "It is real, and it means to harm us." Tracing a direct line from Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin through Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, he reminds us of the courage and moral clarity of our great leaders. And he reveals how the disgraceful history of appeasement has reached forward from the days of Neville Chamberlain and Jimmy Carter to corrupt the unrepentant leftists of the modern Democratic Party -- from Howard Dean and John Kerry to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Hannity's first blockbuster book, the New York Times bestseller Let Freedom Ring, cemented his place as the freshest and most compelling conservative voice in the country. As host of the phenomenally successful Hannity & Colmes and The Sean Hannity Show, Hannity has won a wildly devoted fan base. Now he brings his plainspoken, take-no-prisoners style to the continuing War on Terror abroad -- and liberalism at home -- in Deliver Us from Evil.

"

Talk-show giant and New York Times-bestselling author Sean Hannity -- widely recognized as the most popular young conservative voice in the country -- takes on evil in all its forms: from the growing threats of overseas terror, to the ongoing moral degradation of the American way of life, to the upcoming presidential campaign and its implications.

Nearly three years have passed since that tragic day in September. Since then, our wounds have healed, but our senses and memories have dulled.

At first, the nation rallied behind its leader. But by the time the confrontation with Iraq presented itself, our courage and moral certainty seemed to fade in the face of partisan bickering and posturing.

Now the political left and the Democratic Party are trying to use the demanding aftermath of the war to exploit our national cause for their own political advantage.

How could we allow ourselves to forget so soon?

--from Deliver Us from Evil

Sean Hannity's first blockbuster book, the New York Times bestseller Let Freedom Ring, cemented his place as the freshest and most compelling conservative voice in the country. As the host of the phenomenally successful Hannity & Colmes on the Fox News Channel and The Sean Hannity Show on ABC Radio, Hannity has won a wildly devoted fan base. Now he brings his plainspoken, take-no-prisoners style to the continuing War on Terror abroad -- and liberalism at home -- in Deliver Us from Evil.

You will notice that by trolling through the reviews of this book, all the negative ones written by liberals are nothing more then one or even a few sentences that can only be classified as a rant. There are a few that are a couple of paragraphs in length, but that's the best of the liberal lot.

However, all the reviews by people who agree with Sean just happen to write long reviews that actually delve into the book and analyze the ideas and opinions it presents.

It is obvious that the left wing haters who "rated" this book never even read it. How Sad.

1 out of 5 stars Hannity Wuvz Bush.......2007-08-07

Yep, it's true, and basically, it comes to say that Sean Hannity is yet another conservative scumbag that worships the man and thinks that liberals are terrorists. Plus, the guy's on FOX News, the channel that despite its slogan "Fair and Balanced", leans over to one side and is up to the brim with bias and lies. Hannity is a liar, a hypocrite, basically he's one that basically follows the road of terror that Bush crafted. If you can take one word he utters in this book seriously, you need help.

1 out of 5 stars Misinformation and emotional retardation.......2007-04-04

The author Sinclair Lewis said, "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross." I think even Lewis would be surprised by the transparent tactics Hannity uses to pose as a holy patriot, while he serves the super rich who are warring against the US working class, persecuting ecocide, and committing human rights abuses the world over. Hannity knows he doesn't have to honestly discuss issues, as the audience he appeals to is wedded to the military State; thus, they are often quite willing to be deceived about the alleged righteousness of their crusade for corporate profits. War is a force that gives some people meaning, to paraphrase the title of a serious book by Christopher Hedges.War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning

Fortunately, the American people are being delivered from Hannity's evil. Every day, more people are discovering the radio shows and books of Thom Hartmann, Amy Goodman and Ed Schultz.Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class -- And What We Can Do About It (BK Currents) Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back Straight Talk from the Heartland: Tough Talk, Common Sense, and Hope from a Former Conservative
Even those who have been "Hannitized" or "Limbaughtomized" are tuning in and considering all sorts of issues and perspectives that the establishment media consistently avoids.
Bringing Hannity even more shame is his endlessly abusive attitude towards anybody who dares to think or act outside "the Fox." He models an authoritarian temper that only the architects and the mental slaves of a strict hierarchy would enjoy. His style brings to mind this quote from Henry Clay, "The arts of power and its minions (like Hannity) are the same in all countries and in all ages. It marks its victim; denounces it; and excites the public odium and the public hatred to conceal its own abuses and encroachments."

Hannity appears to be beyond redemption. His fear keeps him in place. If he ever turned his back on the monied interests he serves, they'd destroy him. As "The Sopranos" and countless other mafia programs tell us - "don't cross the family." But I have faith that people will find and pass along the sort of progressive media resources that will help free ourselves from the satanic media that Hannity represents.

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic And Un-Objective.......2007-03-20

Sean Hannity is one of the louder members of the radical right chorus that continues to promote the "right" way in which Americans should live. We know the roster well, and there is indeed little difference between Hannity's writings and those of Anne Coulter and Bill O'Reilly. "Deliver Us From Evil" has the same characteristics as the above mentioned commentators' works in that it's plain, a quick read and offers numerous arguments in favor of an America that only exists in the mind of Sean Hannity and his devoted fans. The usual bashing of gays, "liberals" and everyone else Hannity perceives as "enemies" are all here, so fans will not be disappointed. For students of history what brings down Hannity's book is his atrocious treatment of recent American history. Hannity glorifies Ronald Reagan to the point of making him a deity, and actually defends Oliver North and Iran-Contra while actually having the cojones to praise the Monroe Doctrine (at one point Hannity says of Reagan, "the Monroe Doctrine meant something to Mr. Reagan"). Essentially Hannity, who has never served a day in combat or ever resided in a war-torn nation, condones the bullying and raiding of other nations for purely idealogical means. Mr. Hannity apparently still believes the Reagan line that Nicaragua, which resides under Mexico and after El Salvador, is a mere two day drive away from Texas. But then again, Hannity has appeared on Fox News insisting that Iraq had WMDs. In other sections of the book Hannity goes on tirades based on slim facts on everything from God to immigrants (Hannity uses his Irish ancestry as an excuse to go after current immigrants crossing into the United States). And all of it is framed by a very dry, monotone writing style. "Deliver Us From Evil" offers nothing of real value to those who seek real, detailed reading on current events, the book doesn't even serve as a useful tool for social analysis. Hannity tries to instruct us on very dire, important issues with little experience, expertise or insight. Men like Newt Gingrich of course use the man to open their "tours" and speeches because he has garnered an impressive radio audience composed of really the only type of people who could take this kind of book seriously. The saddest aspect of "Deliver Us From Evil" is that Hannity, like his comrades, does not appear to have the imagination or spirit to actually move forward into the future, instead he remains locked to a nostalgic 80's past that never existed. For Hannity the Reagan era was the Golden Age, for many it was the beginning of the true corporate sacking of America, and for Latin America it was a bloody era filled with state-sponsored terrorism. His solutions, like Pat Buchanan's and O'Reilly's, are not to face the challenges of the future, but to remain locked to a past, a past corrupted by their legalistic, radical idealism. The most dangerous aspect of this kind of propaganda is that it only serves the divide the nation instead of unifying it into a true, working culture that will advance. "Deliver Us From Evil" is empty in skill, and empty in ideas.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!!.......2007-01-23

Finally someone, in this case Sean Hannity, is able to cut through the liberal domination of the published world and drop some truth grenades on the battlefield of America. You say Liberalism I say Terrorism. In fact I can't tell the difference. It's the liberals who have declared jihad on the wombs of America's women. It is Liberals who strapped their [...] bombs to their bleeding hearts and blew up the church of marriage. And it is liberals who flew the plane into the second tower. I've heard one of the pilots was a 3rd cousin of Al Gore. Sean Hannity delivers us from evil...now if he could only get my pizza here on time.

Book Description

Occult influences march freely across the American landscape today. From Pokémon cards and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Marilyn Manson and psychic hotlines, the nation is under siege. Occult beliefs-presented as the path to enlightenment and peace-permeate our society, powerfully influencing our children, our neighbors, our government and even our churches. Cindy Jacobs reveals the deadly impact of Satan's dominion over the media and the resulting rise in violence and immorality that plague our society. She then shows how through prayer, spiritual warfare and activism we can halt the destructive advance of the devil's kingdom in the land.

Good book. Very informative. I bit scary, but that's reality. Lot's of scriptures listed to back this book, and other references, too. I liked it. An eye opener.

1 out of 5 stars Probably NOT the most Biblically based teaching you'll ever read..........2006-05-01

Marc Jacobs is the Pastor of "Church for All Nations" here in Colorado Springs. Cindy is his wife. While i attended their church i found such incredibly unBiblical teachings as "Jesus was a rich man and the disciples had PLENTY of money" to the idea that EVERYONE has the gift of tongues. Their "church", and i use the term loosely, is more concerned with buying land and renovating their facility than it is in doing ANY of the works Christ called us to do. When their budget came out only 17% of it was used for mission work. The rest was for salaries, paying off debt (??? since WHEN does a CHURCH have DEBT???) and renovating their physical plant. Moreover, Marc Jacobs and his staff are "prosperity preachers" (give to God and he will bless you financially. So, with all THAT in mind? I kind of wonder how Biblically based this book really is...

1 out of 5 stars A Poor Book.......2006-01-20

I began reading this book in a local Christian bookstore. I was utterly shocked at the bad reasoning that is passed off in this book as "proof" that popular trends, including Pokemon and Harry Potter, as evil.

The author first claims that the vomiting and dizziness that some people experience while watching Pokemon is "proof" that Pokemon is Satanic. It's called 'epilepsy', Jacobs, and according to http://www.cptech.org/ip/wto/p6/msf052003.pdf, there were 1.4 million people who suffer from it in 1996.

She then claims that Pokemon "encourages" its players to cheat using the GameShark - a cheating device for those who don't know. This indicates lack of knowledge on her part. First of all, the GameShark is not a Pokemon phenomenon; you can cheat on almost any videogame. Secondly, I rather doubt that cheating on a videogame is proof of "bad morals" on the part of the gamer.

Jacobs concludes her Pokemon section by citing an instance when a fourteen year old Pokemon fan assaulted someone in his high school in order to obtain a Pokemon. Since when, exactly, has the bad behavior of one teenager reflected on an entire franchise? That's like saying that ALL Christians are responsible for the dishonest practices of televangelists like the Bakkers and Robert Tilton.

The section covering Harry Potter contains similar bad logic. Jacobs cites a quote from a young fan of Harry Potter who claims that they want to "become a witch", thereby reasoning that the entire Harry Potter franchise must be evil because of the acts of one fan.

She also concludes that Harry Potter "must" be evil because it is about witchcraft. The Bible contains historical accounts of entire civilizations being eliminated and many other violent subjects, but that doesn't mean that anyone who reads the Bible is murderous. It means that the Bible happens to contain violent passages.

Jacobs is supposed to prove conclusively that Harry Potter, Pokemon, Magic cards, and other trendy fads are Satanic, but I think that her arguments are quite weak. She more proves that these fads are NOT Satanic than she does prove that they are.

5 out of 5 stars Should Be 10 Stars-A Fantastic Resource.......2004-10-15

This is a great book. It should be rated 10 STARS or more. There is a wealth of information in here and every parent and Christian needs a copy of this in their home. Churches need copies in their libraries.

This book tells the truth about Pokemon, Harry Potter, Freemasonry, satanism, and many more of the evils out there waiting to ensnare Christians and especially their children. Satan wants to get your child's attention and KEEP IT and he will do anything and everything he can to accomplish it.

As I read this book I did a lot of highlighting in it to mark important parts and things to remember. I highly suggest others do the same. And, get a new highlighter when you start the book as you will be using it A LOT!

The information in here on spiritual warfare is invaluable. It is loaded with great, useful and timely information for the days in which we live.

Book Description

The idea of demons or demon possession was, to pastor Don Basham, far-fetched. But when members of his congregation started revealing problems that were strangely unresponsive to traditional Christian answers, he was forced to take a closer look. Deliver Us from Evil is the captivating account of Don Basham's journey from disbelief in the existence of demons to acceptance of their reality. This is more than a good detective story and more than the triumphant testimonies of ordinary people released from evil spirits. It is a compendium of Bible teaching on warfare and evil spirits, as well as the biblical conditions for deliverance, how to pray for deliverance, and how to protect oneself against demonic invasion. Deliverance is more than freedom from evil; it is delivery into the freedom to love and serve the Lord.

An unbiased documentation of a Pastor's willingness to "think outside of the box" and let the Lord reveal and show him what he needs to know to truly minister to his congregation's problems. Engaging, easy to read with truth and genuine answers laced through its' pages; a real answer to those who seemingly are "dogged" on a daily basis.

Book is down to earth and very easy to read. Outlines really well with comprehensive listings in the back of the book of the authors research.

5 out of 5 stars And They Shall Cast Out Devils.......2006-08-03

If you are looking for a scriptural study concerning devil spirits, then this is probably not the book you want. However, if your looking for an eye-opening book that will grab your attention from the beginning and hold it till the end then this is the book for you! I read this book in one day, it's that good!
The Author was a minister who didn't believe that the Devil was real, he thought that the Devil was just a metaphor and he thought that devil spirits were actually sub-concious psychological problems that people experienced. And guess were he probably learned this? Bible College and Theological Seminary or course. Just goes to show you that just because somebody recieved a degree at a Bible College doesn't mean that they were taught Jack about the Word of God. But as God led him into the Delieverance Ministry, he began to learn that the Devil and his Devil Spirits are real. One of the best things that I liked about the book is the shear honesty of the Author. Not only does he talk about the successes that he had in the Deliverance ministry but he also talks about his mistakes and failures. I admire that kind of honesty.
I highly recommend this book to all Christians, you won't be disapointed.
God Bless!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and balanced.......2003-06-13

This book, first published in 1976, is not exactly history--there are no footnotes--and is heavy on sociology, but is quite interesting and balanced. The author has good things to say for Prohibition, and pooh-poohs the notion that Prohibition increased drinking--it clearly did not--or that crime increased because of it. Obviously, however, Prohibition decreased resopect for law. The author points out the same thing can be said for drug laws--and there is merit in what he says. Since I so strongly believe in illegalization of harmful drugs I presume that if I had been an adult in 1915 I might have been for Prohibition!

4 out of 5 stars Digs Deep into Cause and Effect.......2000-10-20

Clark does an incredibly competent job of explaining the feelings of both urban and rural Americans over the last three centuries. He exposes the political depth that was the Prohibition movement. Being a "wet" or a "dry" reminded me of the current struggle between "pro-choice" and "pro-life" factions. The book also does well on introducing the major personalities of the movement. A great first read for anyone interested in Prohibition.

3 out of 5 stars A very thorough history of Prohibition.......2000-04-03

Clark analyzes and critiques Prohibition not as a historical moment, but as a movement, originating in the 16th century. This book is very well researched and a thorough bibliography is included. An interesting aspect that is brought to light is the rural vs. urban issue of 18th and 19th century America. Overall, this text is a very good introduction to the politics of the prohibition movement.

5 out of 5 stars The Contributions of Tom Dooley.......2003-05-13

Dr. Thomas Dooley was a hero to me. Fire On the Mountain means to me the Fire yet another time after the French left for honourable reasons Indochine and still the people could not be set free. Agriculture burned and people died. Deliver Us From Evil was their petition, and the world did hear them, but too much, it would seem. Merton would have been his Confessor, but over what teletype would this have been then? I did read Merton as a girl, but it gave insufficient consolation to these wounds of the heart. On the Night They Burned the Mountain, the children of that Tigerland were again left behind. Tom Dooley didn't live to see it, and before he slept, he anguished sore. I neither need to buy these books nor see the film. I've lived in that hereafter and carry in on through the remainder of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for reading.......2000-01-12

I first read these books when I was in H.S. They inspired me to want to be a better person and devote myself to good works. I know that sounds odd but these are no ordinary books. I recently reread them and found them to be even better than I remembered. These are noble books written by a noble man. Tragically the author died from cancer at a very young age. The background for these books may seem a little dated due to the fall of Communism in Russia but the subject is as pertinent now as it was then and will be hundreds of years from now. Inhumanity and humanity. The cruelty of ideolegies versus the compassion of the individual. These are an excellent choice for any reader from nine to ninety-nine.

Dr. Dooley was a young US Navy Medical Officer, aboard a ship in Haiphong harbor when France was being turned out of Vietnam. Following a plea for medical help he went ashore, got to know the people, and grew to love them. He left the Navy and spent several years in the 1950s traveling among the peoples of Southeast Asia, bringing medical care to regions where whites had never before even been seen, until his return to the U.S. shortly before his death from cancer.

He saw and described many horrors committed by Communists on their own people trying to cross the new border from North to South Vietnam after the country was partitioned. Those descriptions of what was really happening stand in stark contrast to the stories popularly accepted in the U.S. a decade later.

These three books form a powerfully emotional yet factually substantiated account. They are worth searching to find and read. Would that they would be reprinted as many less worthy books are these days.

Foreign-affairs journalist William Shawcross travels around the world--Bosnia, Baghdad, and elsewhere--to paint a messy portrait of the post-cold-war world. Deliver Us from Evil is very much an on-the-ground book, full of reportage and descriptions of world leaders such as UN chief Kofi Annan. It includes a strong point of view: the dewy-eyed, do-gooder mentality that drives so much contemporary international relations is, as far as Shawcross is concerned, deeply wrongheaded. Peacekeeping missions often find that there's no peace to keep, and expectations of what they can accomplish soar far too high. "Today 'humanitarianism' often rules. It becomes a sop to international concern, and then it can be dangerous," writes Shawcross. Coupled with a world of instant media, where CNN broadcasts live from the killing fields, humanitarianism fuels a strong desire to have immediate reconciliation between warring factions. But it's a delusional goal, says Shawcross, pointing to the American Civil War and how long (even after Appomattox) it took North and South to reconcile fully. There's no reason to think other torn nations will respond more quickly. Peacekeeping missions often promise a heaven on earth they cannot deliver. "In a more religious time it was only God whom we asked to deliver us from evil," concludes Shawcross. "Now we call upon our own man-made institutions for such deliverance. That is sometimes to ask for miracles." --John J. Miller

Book Description

The Cold War has been followed by a decade of regional and ethnic conflicts, massacres, and forced exiles. Should America assume the role of peacekeeper and chief humanitarian in a world of endless wars and human disasters? Eminent foreign correspondent William Shawcross has spent much of his career in war zones and has had unrivaled access to diplomats, peacekeepers, and global policymakers at the highest levels, including UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, for whom he has high regard. In Deliver Us from Evil, which has a new epilogue for the paperback edition, Shawcross takes us behind the lines with him to Cambodia, Bosnia, Somalia, Sierra Leone, East Timor, Rwanda, and Kosovo to show us how complex and costly Western interventions are and how naïve are our hopes of peacemaking without bloodshed.

Download Description

Reporting from war zones around the globe, acclaimed journalist William Shawcross gives us an unforgettable portrait of a dangerous world and of the brave men and women, ordinary and extraordinary, who risk their lives to make and keep the peace. The end of the Cold War was followed by a decade of regional and ethnic wars, massacres and forced exiles, and by constant calls for America to lead the international community as chief peacekeeper. The efforts of that community -- identified with the United Nations but often dominated by the world's wealthy nations -- have had mixed results. In Africa, the West is accused of indifference or too little, too late. In Cambodia, the UN presides over free elections, but the results are overridden. In Iraq, Saddam Hussein continues to defy the UN, and in Bosnia and Kosovo, the West acts hesitantly after terrible slaughter and ethnic cleansing. Shawcross, a veteran of many war zones, has had broad access to global policymakers, including UN secretary general Kofi Annan, high American diplomats, peacekeepers and humanitarian-aid professionals. He has traveled with them to some of the world's most horrifying killing fields. Deliver Us from Evil is his stark, on-the-ground report on the many crises faced by the international community and its servants as they struggle to respond around the world. He brings home the price many have paid attempting to restore peace and help alleviate terrible suffering. He illuminates the risks we face in a complex and dangerous world. Some critics have concluded that some interventions may prolong conflict and create further casualties. The lesson we learn from ruthless and vengeful warlords the world over is thatgoodwill without strength can make things worse. Shawcross argues that recent interventions -- in Kosovo and East Timor, for example -- provide reason for concern as well as hope. Still, the unmistakable message of the past decade is that we cannot intervene everywhere, that not

5 out of 5 stars Deliver Us From the Evil of a Lack of Political Will.......2002-12-20

Deliver Us from a Lack of Political Will, by Peter Gantz, Partnership for Effective Peace Operations.

A review of Deliver Us From Evil: Peacekeepers, Warlords and a World of Endless Conflict, William Shawcross, Simon & Schuster, 413pp.

So, yes, this book is about peacekeeping, that amorphous blob of activity the international community tasks the UN with accomplishing every day in conflict zones throughout the world. It is clear that expectations far exceed what the UN is capable of delivering, as Mr. Shawcross points out early on. The UN in the nineties was tasked with bringing peace to areas where conflict had erupted, following the end of the Cold War. Mr. Shawcross does an admirable job of describing how well and how often that did not work, and how deep the failures were.

This book is not a UN bashing book, though. It certainly points out the problems at the UN, but Mr. Shawcross knows that these problems, just as the UN itself, are the creation of the member states and their political leaders. In particular, the most powerful member state, the United States, has played a spectacularly unhelpful role. Congress nearly destroyed the UN financially in the late nineties, largely driven by provincial isolationists in the Republican Party. President Clinton and his top advisors were no better, perhaps most notably during the Rwandan genocide. Muddled decisions from the administration did much to worsen crises and conflicts the world over.

Mr. Shawcross puts his finger squarely on the problem. Time after time it has been a lack of political will. The inability of the international community to summon the courage to stop the deaths of millions of blacks in Rwanda, Burundi, and other parts of Africa is one of the more despicable features of the twentieth century, and one of the examples of problems with UN peacekeeping that Mr. Shawcross covers quite well. The U.S. and other countries are simply not willing to back up words with actions.

Hard and fast solutions are not offered by Mr. Shawcross. The reader would be better directed to other works for that. (The book came out prior to the UN's own surprisingly honest and straightforward assessment of peacekeeping, the Brahimi Report, commissioned by Secretary-General Kofi Annan.) But to understand the problems with UN peace operations, and to understand the fundamental root cause of these problems, the lack of political will to act, or to act well, this book is better than most. Mr. Shawcross suggests in the end that UN peace operations have too often been about asking for miracles.

But make no mistake; he does not suggest that peacekeeping should be abandoned. And certainly this book should not provoke a reader to gag at the idea of deploying peacekeepers-they should gag, however, at the antics of their elected officials. The U.S. and other countries sit at the Security Council and give the UN grand and noble tasks to save the world, but when it comes to providing the means to accomplish those tasks, failure is palpable. The abject failure of government officials to match actions to words is what we truly need deliverance from.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening.......2002-10-22

For anyone interested in world affairs, or interested in learning more about the United Nations in today's fractured and dangerous world, I strongly recommend this work by Shawcross.

This work is essentially a survey of hotspots around the world that eventually boiled over spurring the intervention of foreign governments in the name of "humanity". Shawcross begins with the backgrounds of these conflicts and spells out the events leading up to and including foreign intervention and the aftereffects. Shawcross often begins to outline one conflict, leaves it to start another at a crucial point, may then introduce the reader to yet another, or return to the original. In this fashion, the reader is carried from conflict to conflict, without discovering a resolution until later. This device keeps the reader more interested and in the end perhaps mirrors the real world as well. Hotspots of the world don't wait for each other to resolve before cropping up.

Much of the work also focuses on Kofi Annan the current secretary general, and it is this topic that is most enlightening. As citizens of the world, we have painted a romantic picture of the U.N and become frustrated when it does not accomplish the things we would like it to. We often forget that the United Nations are composed of individual nations with individual interests. At the heart of the U.N. lies the Security Council. A veto by any of the members of the Security Council essentially cripples the U.N.'s ability to act. The U.N.is also reliant on its members for funding and equipment. It is in this context that Shawcross presents Annan, who himself is not without blame for some of the the U.N.'s shortcomings, but nevertheless comes across in a very sympathetic light.

The aforementioned members of the Security Council come across much more poorly, particulary the United States and France.

The highest complement I can give this work is that Shawcross is even handed. His writing does not heap blame on any party. He is merely spelling out the limitations of the world we live in and the simple fact that states are first and foremost looking out for their own interests.

Especially interesting is the material dealing with Saddam Hussein. He has been a thorn in the world's side for years. He also touches on Serbia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, East Timor among others.

One comes away with a new perspective on the limitations and failings of the United Nations, but also a profound feeling that it is as indispensible and vital as ever.

4 out of 5 stars Good discussion of the issues.......2002-06-14

This is a book about the role of the United Nations in international peacekeeping missions. Prior to the end of the cold war, the United Nations was not able to intervene in regional conflicts. The reason being that the split on the security council meant that one or other of the superpowers would veto actions which would conflict with their national interest. With the end of the cold war the world was faced with the possibility that the United Nations could for the first time try to act to limit human misery brought about by civil war and the collapse of civil authority in some countries. The early nineties also saw the election of the American President Clinton. Clinton at the start of his term was committed to trying to increase the importance of the United Nations as a means of bringing a rational approach to ending conflict. He appointed Madeline Albright as an Ambassador to the UN and there were expectations that something could be achieved.

Shawncross examines a large number of conflicts and looks at the attempts of the UN to achieve some positive result. The vast majority of the cases examined by Shawncross were failures. His book is an examination of how those failures occurred and what factors led to them.

There have however been some successes. The intervention in Cambodia, although it did not lead to the setting up of democratic institutions (Hun Sen was able to quickly set up an authoritarian state after elections were held which should have removed him from power) did lead to the end of the civil war in that country. Although it is only dealt with in a sketchy way the UN intervention in East Timor led to and end to the killing and it now seems possible that a democratic state will emerge.

The failures are however significant. The UN failed to do anything to prevent the genocide in Rwanda. What effectively happened in this case was that the Rwandan population was divided into two ethnic groups. One group the Hutus moved to kill the minority group the Tutis. Over 100,000 Tutis were murdered brutally with the UN taking no action at all. However the story did not end there. A guerilla movement consisting of Tutis was able to take control of the country. The Hutu groups responsible for the initial massacres forced huge numbers of their own people out of the country into neighbouring Zaire to form the basis of a guerilla army. This fought for some time against the victorious Tutis. Eventually the Tutis invaded Zaire massacring huge numbers of Hutu and in the process overturning the government of Mobutu. Some peace keepers were put in place to prevent this but the mission failed abysmally.

Another disappointment was Somalia. Again Somalia was a small country which had experienced a total break down in civil society. The collapse of order led to large numbers of rural people moving to the capital and a fall in food production. In place of civil authority the country became ruled by armed gangs. Both the United Nations and the United States became obsessed with one gang leader and spent most of their efforts trying to capture him. Alternative strategies might have involved the provision of food aid in country areas to move people out of the city as a means of increasing rural productivity. In addition attempts to disarm the groups one would have thought productive. Instead the UN and American troops fell into a confrontation with some gangs in the capital and suffered casualties which in the view of the US were not sustainable. This led to a pull out.

The book is interesting. It does not really propose a solution but it raises a huge number of issues. One interesting point made by the author is that it cost the Sierra Leone government $36m to hire a mercenary outfit Executive Solutions to deal with its rebellion. (The rebels involved were brutal and routinely amputated the limbs of village people for no good reason). The cost of hiring these mercenaries was cheaper than the cost of a UN force ($46m for the same period). As a number of the UN members do seem to have a stomach for the work one wonders if this may not be the future of peace keeping.

4 out of 5 stars A Review of Hell in the 90's.......2002-05-31

This book is a good overview of the UN work as peace keepers during the 1990's and the horrible different wars that took place during the decade. Cambodia, Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, East Timor, and Iraq are the locations / wars the author takes us through. The descriptions of what these people did to each other are almost more then can be believed. The author also provides a good overview with each conflict as to why it was happening and the internal politics, which kept the killing going. He also gives us just enough details on the people effected that you really get a feel for the catastrophic impact the wars / slaughters have had on them. It really makes you wonder how people can do this to their neighbors.

The author also describes the deployment and efforts that the peacekeepers and aid works go through in these war zones. It is truly an aggravating reading experience to see the amount of internal and world politics that slows down the deployment of the soldiers to the point that thousands more people die waiting for the help. With that said that book also makes a very good point that the ideas and people that drive the push for peacekeepers are doing so in a misguided effort. The peacekeepers are solders and solders are not law enforcement officers, they are not trained or equipped for this function. The international and internal UN politics are so vast and ingrained that once a direction is proposed it is often too late in the execution, not well thought out, and ends without a plan for continued safety or improvements. The effect is often that the situation that brought the peacekeepers to the area quickly returns once the solders go home.

The book also covers a review of the politics and diplomacy that occurred during the 1990's in the world covering these events. We get an inside, but abbreviated view of these politics of the nations that are members of the UN Security Council. The author spent of good deal of time with the current UN Secretary General Kofi Annan so we get a lot of detail from his point of view. The author also gives us a few insights into some of the other world leaders involved in these issues. The pressures that the UN Secretary General faces trying to get pledges of funds, personnel, and approval for peacekeeping operations are very interesting and one wonders how anything gets done at all.

I thought the author was letting a little of his own politics or views into the writing by his comments that detailed the deliberate lack of intervention by the United States. The U.S. does surfer from not always having a clear path to follow in these type of issues, but I felt the author was trying to lay out that if the U.S. took the lead then many of the negative issues with peacekeeping would disappear. I would have liked the author to have included some maps of the parts of the world discussed. The fact geek in me would have liked to have seen a list of the UN peacekeeping missions they have done sense inception and a more in depth discussion on the criteria for choosing who sends men.

After reading this book you will understand that sending in United Nations peacekeepers means there is a huge mess that probably will not be resolved quickly. This is an interesting book and well worth it if you are interested in the topic.

Deliver Us From Evil provides a front row seat to the agonizing development, completion and aftermath of the most dramatic global post cold-war intranational conflicts: Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and others. Shawcross's intimate access to the negotiations and communications surrounding the United Nations Secretary-Generals provide a revealing look at the deliberate lack of intervention by the United States and other members of the Security Council despite public statements to the contrary. Shawcross provides comprehensive background information to allow a thorough understanding of these intranational conflicts that continue to shape our current political state.

In the interest of full disclosure I must admit that I know and greatly admire the author. However, that does not mean I can not be objective.
Mr. Harris wrote a novel that scared me like no other, and yet the structure and symbolism were more like that often seen in great and classical works of fiction.
It is a story of a young boy in a rural Georgia town who comes to understand who/what he is. From terrifying and suspense-filled bathtubs to a tree house providing sanctuary to those willing to climb a ladder, this novel filled my mind with imagery and thought provoking feelings like no other.
... Nevertheless, Deliver Us From Evil had me checking my back and cautiously glancing around a brightly lit room full of people in the middle of the day.
    Enjoy.
