Product Description
Depression: A Stubborn Darkness is Dr. Edward T. Welch s latest release in a series of ground-breaking best-selling counseling books that include When People Are Big and God is Small, Blame It on the Brain?, Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave. Now in its third printing, Welch continues to further his reputation as an author who can speak to general consumers in a language they intuitively connect with on a deeply personal level. Endorsed by Joni Eareckson Tada, and Bob Lepine of FamilyLife, this book is targeted to the 18 million adult Americans who struggle with depression. Compassionate and compelling, the book lays out issues and answers with Welch s world view that faith needs to be interlaced with therapies and medication for conditions categorized as strictly clinical. The author weaves in questions scattered throughout the book to help the reader interact with the content and also offers suggestions for those who have loved ones struggling with depression.

Very good .......2007-06-30
"When you are depressed, how can you take a step, let alone a journey? When all vital energy is devoted to staying alive and just making it to the next hour, how can you add anything else - like hope - to your day?" So begins this wise and compassionate book by Ed Welch. Whether you are a someone who struggles with depression yourself, or someone who desires to help those who do, Depression: A Stubborn Darkness will prove an informed and biblically-faithful resource.
The book is divided into an introduction and four parts.
Introduction. The first three chapters are introductory and begin with an empathetic note, describing "How Depression Feels" (chapter two) with a number of actual statements from those who have experienced depression. This chapter will help give understanding to someone who has never personally battled with severe depression. "Definitions and Causes" are described in chapter three, which differentiates between "situational depression" (less severe) and "clinical depression" (more severe), along with lists of possible symptoms for each.
Part One: Depression is Suffering. The seven chapters making up part one are Godward and hopeful, reminding us that depression is a form of suffering out which we can cry out to God for comfort and purpose. Welch doesn't try to make depression look less painful than it is. He faces it head-on. But neither does he let the lying voices of depression claim the day. Instead, he points the reader to God and Scripture (especially the Psalms), with gentle and hopeful reminders of God's love and sovereignty.
Part Two: Listen to Depression. Part two is especially helpful as the various contributing causes of depression are explored. These include other people, "Adam," Satan (chapter eleven), and culture (chapter twelve). Chapter thirteen gets to "The Heart of Depression" showing that depression is a result not simply of the "outside events" that "come at us," but also our "internal believes and interpretations . . . that come out of us" (p. 123). To deal with depression we must learn to address the "spiritual allegiances" of our hearts" which give rise to imaginations, desires, motives, thoughts, feelings, and actions. "The curious path to true life" says Welch, "is to grow in both the knowledge of God's love and your own sin" (p. 131). Chapter fourteen continues with "The Heart Unveiled," with following chapters exploring other causes of and collaborators with depression such as fear, anger, dashed hopes, failure and shame, guilt and legalism, and death. With each of these, the author walks the reader through the fog of confused feelings onto the sure-footed path of biblical truth about sin and grace.
Part Three: Other Help and Advice. In part three, Welch discusses medical treatments (chapter twenty-one) and gives helpful advice for the families and friends of those who are suffering from depression (chapter twenty-two). "To help a depressed person, you don't need expert knowledge. You do need an awareness of your own spiritual neediness, a growing knowledge of Jesus, and an eagerness to learn from others, including the person you would like to help" (p. 224). A particularly great chapter follows called "What Has Helped." It contains helpful insights from counselees about what first helped them begin to change, along with some specific strategies to try. The goal of the chapter is not to give an endless to-do list, but rather to "prime the pump" by giving ideas and strategies that have actually been helpful for depressed people. Chapter twenty-four is another honest, yet hopeful, look at "What to Expect" as one continues to battle against depression.
Part Four: Hope and Joy: Thinking God's Thoughts. The book finishes with two chapters on Humility and Hope (chapter twenty-five) and Thankfulness and Joy (chapter twenty-six). Potential readers should not feel daunted by the twenty-six chapters; each chapter is short and Ed Welch is an engaging writer with an easy prose. It is obvious that Welch has done his research, but the book isn't cluttered by clinical language. More than anything, reading this book feels like getting good advice from an kind and caring friend. As a pastor who sometimes struggles with discouragement and sometimes counsels those with more severe forms of depression, I found this a grace-filled book, loaded with hope and wisdom. I highly recommend it.
Excellent resource for small group use.......2007-03-12
Insightful. Short chapters make it ideal for small group/support group use. Catalyst for discussion.
Top Drawer!!! Very challenging and encouraging........2007-01-17
Ed Welch has been gifted by God to write in a humble yet powerful manner that grips the minds and consciences of those who read his works. His books including "Depression" challenge our thinking and actions with the authority of Scripture and at the same time he points out the great hope and encouragement that we have from the same Scriptures. He writes in a simple yet profound manner that does not draw attention to himself but directs the readers' attention where it should be: on God.
This is an excellent resource not only for those who struggle with "depression" but all people who go through difficulty and suffering in life. I guess that includes all of us.
wonderfully explainitory for the average person.......2006-07-26
Ed Welch is so talented in writing so that all readers, whether expert or novice, can relate and understand what he's talking about. I read so that I could better understand the struggles of a loved one going through depression and it greatly deepened my understanding and ignited my compassion. Highly recommended for anyone suffering from depression or loving someone who does.
Encouraging Balance.......2006-07-11
Dr. Ed Welch has taken some "hits" even from within his own "camp" for this thoroughly balanced and biblical approach to understanding, facing, and dealing with depression. Welch is neither "gaga" over medical diagnoses nor "knee-jerk" reacting against the possibility of medical causes for some depression. In this, he follows in the train of the Church Fathers, the Reformers, and the Puritans who all recognized and even suggested the possibility of physical/medical causes for depression.
Welch writes with a rare combination of compassion and challenge, buttressed by his spiritual theology of suffering--a sufferology. This is perhaps the greatest contribution of the book.
Readers looking for a thought-provoking approach to depression that addresses spiritual, relational, rational, volitional, emotional, and physical issues, will not be disappointed by "Depression: A Stubborn Darkness--Light for the Path."
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Biblical Psychology," "Martin Luther's Pastoral Counseling," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
Book Description
With humility, humor, and conviction, Butler conveys an extensive knowledge of the occult mysteries, including ritual and ceremonial magic, the awakening of kundalini energy, and the path of the qabalistic tree of life. The overriding theme of his lectures concerns regeneration of the personality and the relinquishing of the false ego through control of one’s mental and emotional reactions.
Customer Reviews:
Must BUY!.......2007-02-28
I have to agree with the other reviewer. This is indeed a true classic and worth keeping in your library. The tone of these Lectures which he gave at the Ibis Fraternity in Devon England just 6 months before he left this world, is unasuming and self deprecating. There is so much wisdom in his words that it is precious worth reading and reading again. This is definitely a must buy
A True Classic.......2007-01-20
I think this is one of my all time favorite books on the Western Mystery Tradition. Mr. Butler's unassuming tone and incredible wealth of knowledge make this an important stepping stone in understanding the mysterious. As a person you will fall in love with his demeanor; as a teacher you will be in awe of his skills. This is one you won't be disappointed with.

No Soapbox.......2007-08-23
Bought the book with trepidation, because my experience with most veggie authors has been preachy. This was refreshing in that it allows folks to be where they are . . and make gradual choices. Even one story where relationship and connecting at a friends meal was more important than being a purist vegetarian. Refreshing, well written and a great primer for those wanting to know how to eat correctly making the switch.
Little Gem.......2007-05-15
This is a short little book I bought because I was contemplating becoming a vegetarian for spiritual reasons. Eating In The Light spells out the different kinds of vegetarians and gives some general recommendations regarding nutrition and making the transition to vegetarianism all from a spiritual standpoint. If you already know about vegetarianism this may be too basic for you, but for the individual just beginning to contemplate the path, I think it's very helpful.
Gives permission for all the types of vegetarians.......2003-01-07
I found this book pretty helpful. I especially liked the fact that they're not pushing strict anti-carnivourism as the only way. I also liked the fact that it is a smaller pocket size. I can take it when I go shopping and refer to it.
Do another seach, there is a better book for you out there.......2002-11-01
I read others' reviews before I bought this book and I have to say that I am very surprised that no one mentions that it is only a 4x6 inch, slim, pocket book! As you can imagine, it contains very little information. It will take you about half an hour to read, maybe an hour if you read slowly. If you are already a vegaterian, then you don't need to buy this - I promise you there is nothing that you don't already know in this book. If you are not a vegetarian, then you are better off buying a more comprehensive book on the subject...
Learning about Vegetarianism & Spirituality.......2001-08-02
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has questions about becoming a vegetarian, or for people who already are vegetarian. It helps one to make informed decisions on the very personal choice of whether to eat meat and animal products. I became a vegetarian over two years ago after reading Dr. Virtue's book Divine Guidance, where she states that she was informed during meditation that her clairvoyance was being inhibited by eating meat and ingesting the pain from the animal flesh.
I highly recommend this book. I love the practical, how-to information included on how to shop for and prepare vegetarian food, as well as tips on how to order vegan and vegetarian meals in restaurants, and how to handle situations like eating meals with family and friends who do not follow a vegetarian lifestyle. The book is sized small enough so you can even take it with you in your purse or pocket to restaurants and health food stores for easy reference. It is a highly educational companion for anyone on a spiritual path, or anyone simply looking to make more healthful choices in their life.

Daily Light online at http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/devotions/daily.light/.
As a child Samuel Bagster learned the precepts and practices of a devoted Christian, which sustained him throughout his life and which, in turn, he passed on to his children. This highly principled and religiously minded bookshop owner gathered his large family together daily for reading God's Word, testing their knowledge by connecting the day's verses with other passages, and praying over how it could be applied. It was from this practice of worship that the Bagster family compiled the material for
Daily Light on the Daily Path.
It is said that this daily devotional book is the most popular of all time. It has touched hundreds of thousands of Christians to the remotest corners of the world with the biblical message of comfort and help. Originally printed in the 1800s, this work is timeless because each reading is a connection of Scripture verses centered around a theme. Crossway is delighted to re-release this classic book in the beautiful and clear language of the English Standard Version.

An excellent update to a timeless classic---especially for those of us in the Reformed or Lutheran traditions.
Book Description
This unique textbook covers the traditional topics of a College Success course but presents certain topics in a manner that is in greater harmony with the Christian spirit. While other texts may, in fact, cover certain topics in a way that is contradictory to the teachings of the church, this text encourages spiritual development throughout the college experience.

A Good Idea, Badly Executed.......2007-04-30
This book was required reading for a "college success" type course I was taking. If you are a fresh out of high school teenager who has been a little sheltered, this book is probably an excellent resource. It covers many topics such students might find useful, such as homesickness, time management and planning, thinking and studying changes you have to make to go from high school learning to college, and of course maintaining your physical, mental, and spiritual health and relationships. It includes study techniques for different topic areas and different kinds of exams. And, of course, it includes a Christian perspective throughout, as well as having a chapter devoted to maintaining Christian values while dealing with college temptations.
Unfortunately, it was useless to me, a 30 year old woman who went back to school for a bachelor's degree after already holding an Associates Degree. Plus, my degree program is entirely online, though an accredited university, so many of the study techniques were inapplicable to the courses I take. It would be better if this book were retooled to better address adult students and online students, both growing populations on college campuses. Or if the authors made a separate book for them (and hopefully my school doesn't require future adult, online students to suffer through reading a book that offers no useful information at all for them).
Required reading, unfortunately.......2006-12-27
This was required reading by my college. It should be required reading at the high school level. I'm 50 years old, returning to college via online classes. Since a college success book is required reading, and since the number of adult learners is growing, someone should write a book geared to the adult, online (and correspondence) college student. I knew returning to college would be hard work, but I wasn't prepared for, and the book didn't address, the online "final group project."
Book Description
Refiner's Fire book 3. Kitty, a house slave, always figured it was easiest to do what she'd always done--obey Missy and follow orders. But when word arrives that the Yankees are coming, Kitty is faced with a decision: will she continue to follow the bidding of her owners, or will she embrace this chance for freedom? Never allowed to have ideas of her own, Kitty is overwhelmed by the magnitude of her decision. Yet it is her hope to find the "happy ever after" ending to her life--and to follow Grady, whom she loves--that is the driving force behind her choice. Where will it lead her?
Customer Reviews:
Beginning reasonable...Ending unsatisfying.......2007-07-02
This book starts out as a reasonable "grab in". It depicts the story of a young girl, "Kitty" (later young lady), who has trouble grasping freedom as her own. She later meets a young man, Grady, who's driven by hatred and past sorrows. She begins to have feelings for the man (who's really a young boy) but is almost driven away from him because of his anger and frustration, mainly at white people. This book appears to have the value of forgiveness, but in the end it gives the imnpression that money resolves Grady's anger problems. Also, their relationship, "Kitty" and Grady, seems based on dashing looks and not of true love. The part of faith in this story is not "preachy" at all which is good, but almost has a "backseat" in the whole of the story. Faith has to be a main part otherwise you can't imagine all the main character's happy endings. I believe this to be a good read as far as storyline, but the moral of the story doesn't seem to play out well enough for you to understand.
A great Book.......2007-04-09
This was the first book I've read by Lynn Austin and I just finished reading another one by her called Hidden Places. Both books are excellent. In a Light to my Path, she really shows how only God can take a horrible situation and use it for good.
The characters were very well developed, especially as you continued to discover more and more about them. Grady's character was wonderful in that I felt his rage, his anger, his unbelief and Kitty (Anna)'s character made me cry.
Although the end could have been a little bit more...something, the book was an enjoyable read. I would recommend her books to anyone who is looking for a fresh and unique voice in the Christian book world.
recommended.......2006-12-05
very interesting book. i really enjoyed it. only problem was thatt the language of the people (slave owners, slaves...) did not match the characters, along with the region and time period they were living in. otherwise, very very well-written.
Another great novel.......2006-11-22
It took me a while to get into this book in the beginning because I hate reading how a slave is being torn away from his family and being sbused by his owner. It got better as I kept reading when the story start to show some hope for the slaves. It's amazing to see how ignorant America was back then and how we still are today!
Civil War Historical Fiction- A Slaves Perspective.......2006-06-28
This book is one of those that can be easily read in one sitting. It's the 3rd in a series, depicting slaves' perspectives living through slavery and the civil war. I was gripped at the abuse and portrayal of what it was like to be owned by someone. The realization that one could be ripped away from loved ones or because of the whim of an owner be whipped and/or sent down to "slave row". Mercy was rarely received, and was truly a gift when given.
The sovereignty of God is weaved throughout the pages, as the reader can see how seemingly cruel events were used later to save and protect. God's unconditional love and faithfulness were also portrayed.
I liked how the author used kind-hearted, loving, God-fearing white people in this series to show that not everyone from the white race, or down south were hateful towards the slaves.
The author did a great job of ending this 3 book series. One of the main characters, Grady, was introduced in the first book. The ending was sweet. It could have extended further for additional reunions from others from the first book, but it still is an excellent read.
Customer Reviews:
Jewelled Path.......2000-11-15
Like most of the books I have read by Rosalind Laker, it was not easy to put the bookmark in the page and go to sleep/work. I wanted to read, read, read. The characters are believable and just as you think you know where the storyline is going, it changes and ends a little differently to the usual "happily ever after". The story is set in England, commencing in 1890 and concentrates on jewellery design, gambling and love. As with most of her books, Laker seems to cut to the end too quickly but worth the read and very enjoyable. Read it, you'll love it!

One Page Sermons.......2000-02-12
This devotional is easy to read and the fact that it is totally Scripture makes it so precious. The verses are chosen because they share a theme and read together, they give meaning to each other. I have really enjoyed this book. Many times people add their thoughts to a Scripture reading and this is good, but often I prefer to just let God do the talking. I highly recommend this book.
Great. On point so many times........1999-06-15
It takes a subject and quotes only from the Bible to form continuity of thought for each morning and evening. Have read it for years.

Practical information on the advanced practices of yoga presented in straightforward language.
Customer Reviews:
esoteric secrets.......2007-07-25
This book is written by Swami Rama, a yogi who came to American in the late 70's. He let western doctors study him to advance the scientific understanding of yoga. He claimed to have been able to hold his breath for over an hour. He started a yoga facility in Pennsylvania, which still exists.
As for the book, it contains a wealth of information on various breathing practices -- practices you might hear referred to elsewhere but never explained. Often experts don't explain these things because they consider these practices too dangerous for beginners. But what eager beginner hasn't pushed limits? I suppose caution is in order.
In the year I practiced yoga, I also learned that within the yoga community, secrecy is like a currency, or a way to maintain power.
The Swami later published simpler books, because this book went over the heads of most people. And if you are just looking to get started with the breath, you could look on the internet for 2 to 3 key breathing exercises. No need to buy this book. The next volume in this series doesn't really go into the breath much, but the overall practice of yoga.
A practical guide to the spiritual life from the yogic perspective ..........2006-11-04
This book provides a thoroughgoing look at the mind from a traditional yogic perspective, offering concrete guidance toward preparing it for a truly deep and meaningful meditation practice. As another reviewer notes, Swami Rama combines discussion of the finer points of yoga philosophy with specific exercises from the hatha yoga tradition. Of the many aspects of practice that he writes about, I've found particular benefit from the material on cultivating an internal dialogue with one's own mind in order to work with it--and, in a very real sense, to train it to work with you! --An essential preparation to setting out on the inner voyage, yet very rewarding in itself ...
Good description of techniques - but be warned.......2002-08-12
People can I please advise you to make sure you are first very well established in the first 2 levels of Yoga before you embark on any Pranayama (breath-control). First be steeped in Yama(abstinences - alcohol, drugs, sex, meat, etc) and Niyama(observances - love, kindness, non-harm, patience, etc) before moving on to asans(postures) and especially pranayama. Every swami will tell you that if you are not living a committed Spiritual life in every respect, then practicing the 4th level of Yoga - breathing exercises, especially the advanced ones, can potentially be harmful. You should really only practice techniques like this within the framework of a spiritual society and Guru-disciple relationship. Breathing techniques force prana up the subtle spine, thus awakening higher and higher chakra's. This process should occur naturally and gradually as part of a disciplined spiritual life - it should not be forced.
Unbelievable.......2000-08-01
This is a truly unbelievable book on advanced yoga. The greatest section of the book is the description of advanced (very advanced !) pranayama. Swami Rama first gives a lengthy explanation of the preparation for pranayama & nadi shodhanam. Then, he instructs you on how to achieve amazing spiritual transformation through extreme breath-holding. In what is surely the most fascinating section, Swami Rama describes, in detail, what happens to the body & energy of a yogi as he holds his breath for 5, 10, 13 or more minutes. Using Swami Rama's wisdom I have already achieved kumbhaka's (breath-holds) of over 7 minutes! What an amazing feeling to feel your heart rate drop to 20 beats per minute after 5 minutes! And the state of consciousness that ensues is of course indescribable. I have one suggestion: Get this book! (Swami Rama's 'Science of Breath' is a great companion book).
This book is a yogi's treasure chest!.......2000-03-26
Absolutely a book of deepest wisdom and breath of knowledge. This treasure of a book combines yoga philosophy with very specific hatha yoga techniques. To those who wish to discover what a deeper practice of hatha can lead to, and for those who want specific guidelines into the process of deepening their practice, this book will deeply and eloquently, aid, transform, and inspire you.
