Book Description
The Special Edition is the first two volumes of the Fretboard Logic guitar series combined with a special discount. Part One deals with the pattern organization of the fretboard which results from the guitar's unique tuning system. Part Two teaches the tone groups of music - Chords, Scales and Arpeggios - by building them in the context of this pattern organization, and thereby eliminating the usual guesswork and rote memorization associated with these areas of a guitarist's education. This alone can take years off the learning curve. Combined, the two parts form a solid foundation by which a guitarist can intelligently pursue the music styles of their own choosing, and play them on the guitar types which they prefer.

Fantastic book!.......2007-10-06
This book is all about the CAGED system. At first there was some skepticism about the whole theory of the Caged System, you know--I figured it would be better to learn the fretboard in a more natural way--by notes and by memory, not by patterns. However, as I went deeper into my studies and deeper into this book, it made me realize how ESSENTIAL patterns are to learning guitar. Everything in life comes in patterns, and the CAGED system is one of the most important and simple patterns to memories. I find this book astonishing and intelligent--a great read!

Let me save you some time and money, again . . ........2007-08-15
I originally wrote this review for Volume I, but it applies here too.
The reviews below all sound wonderful, even the ones that weren't five stars. Too good to be true I thought, so I only bought Volume I, rather than the box set. After a week of study, and occasionly rereading the same paragraph over and over until I got it, I too will say that this book did more for me in a week than all the decades of playing guitar and buying countless other books.
Still I was skeptical about the other volumes, so I decided that rather than buy the box set with the DVD I'd just buy the combination of Volumes I and II, and give Volume I to a friend. After spending some time with Volume II, I realized I needed the DVD. Amazon just emailed today saying the box set of three volumes plus the DVD has just shipped.
Let me save you some time and money - buy the box set with the DVD. I say that without having seen the DVD, but from what I see with Volumes I and II, I think you're going to want to do that. Like everyone else, I only wish that I had discovered this book when I was a kid.
Fretboard Logic SE: The ultimate guitar book !!!.......2007-07-10
Simply said this is a must... I played the guitar for 6 years and I was blind as regard as the fretboard... Not anymore :-))
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GUITAR!.......2007-07-07
First let me say this he takes some stabs a Mel Bay books but the thing is Mel Bay books teach you how to READ MUSIC. I wasted weeks reading this book and its cryptic if you ask me.You can learn the notes on the fretboard way faster if you know all your octaves IMHO. This book is a waste of good paper.
Very tough for a complete novice.......2007-05-13
As I v'e read in other reviews, this book goes from major open string chords straight to barre chords which at this stage in the game I am not capable of doing. I like the logic presented here and will come back to this book once I've developed more hand strength and basic skills.

Not really that good.......2007-08-26
It is a slow read and really doesn't help you to understand what you are doing.
~Great book for anyone wanting to give Ubuntu a try~.......2007-08-08
I have been using UBUNTU now for about 6-8 months. I LOVE it so much makes me wonder why I used Windows operating system for so long. After using it we decided to get this hand book to learn the tweaks for some programs that were not working properly ... this will give you a lot of great advice & tip's to getting the best experience while using UBUNTU. After researching all the different book for getting the most out this amazing operating system ... we settled on this one & were not disappointed!! Would highly recommend to everyone!
a little dissapointed, but perhaps my fault.......2007-07-23
I expected a lot more from this book, since it is part of the "Hacks" series, and coming from O'Reilly, I expected it to be a little more interesting. But there is not much in here that cannot be found in the official Ubuntu documentation on their site, or in the community wiki, also on that site. There are a few hacks that are pretty neat, like building your own version of the live-cd, keeping settings for live sessions in flash memory, and buying iTunes music, but the there is stuff like "How to play DVDs," or "Get productive with applications." Also, as a warning, some of the hacks are more geared toward the Ubuntu distribution, rather than the KDE desktop, Kubuntu. It doesn't matter that much, since they are so similar, but somethings don't translate perfectly. For instance, if you are running Kubuntu and want to use the search-your-computer hack, it uses beagle, which is a GNOME app and requires installation of GNOME dependencies which can take up a lot space on top of KDE's own.
I probably should have researched the book more, but if someone else is looking at this for more exciting, technical, and in-depth hacks that detail getting the most out of Ubuntu, look elsewhere. For beginners who want a print manual that is clear, well laid out, and details ways to use this excellent OS, it is spot on. I am glad I bought it, but I am continuing to shop for more hardcore Linux hacks.
Useful and clear .......2007-06-03
Providing 100 useful modifications and procedures to making an Ubuntu system even more useful than a standard distribution, "Ubuntu Hacks" is written clearly, succinctly and with useful end-results in mind.
Chapters are differentiated by the type of "hack" (e.g., Multimedia, Package Management, Security, SoHo Server) or level of difficulty (beginner, moderate and expert), meaning that there really is something for everyone. It is a clever and useful breakdown.
The overwhelming majority of the book has very high utility in the various elaborations to the Ubuntu base-system, which means one can avoid the somewhat tedious process of investigation package 'X' in terms of "will this be useful to me". Obviously in some cases (e.g., "set up a mail server") only the most minimal set of instructions can be given, but these are usually the one's which are most useful.
Whilst there are a couple of issues I would have done differently (e.g., include a small FAT 32 partition for swapping files between OSs when doing a Windows/Ubuntu dual boot) these are fairly trivial to what is, overall, an excellent product which is recommended for any Ubuntu user who wants to tweak their system to maximise utility and performance.
A book you'll use -- The Ubuntu "comfortabilizing" guide..........2007-05-01
Because this Web site already contains quite a few very detailed reviews of Ubuntu Hacks, I'm going to provide a very brief synopsis of why I found the book useful.
I've been running Ubuntu Linux as my primary operating system for a bit less than three months. There've been a few teeth-gnashing, table-pounding "Linux moments", but on the whole Ubuntu's installability, basic configurability, and usability are all superior to other Linux distributions I've tried and abandoned over the past three or so years.
But, like a lot of people I've run Windows most of the time. That means there's bound to be a lot about Linux in general, and Ubuntu in particular, that I don't know. This is where Ubuntu Hacks provides useful and usable information that helped me "comfortabilize" Ubuntu.
The primary categories of information in Ubuntu Hacks are (a) adjusting stuff that's already there, and (b) installing new, useful stuff that's not part of a default installation. Between those two categories, Ubuntu Hacks will help a new Ubuntu user become more thoroughly oriented with his or her new Linux system. To cite but one example, Ubuntu Hacks enabled me to install and configure the free VMware Server that allows me to run a Windows virtual machine "under" Linux. This in turn is greatly reducing the number of times I need to boot into my dual-boot computer's Windows partition...
Finally, I'll add that over the past year or so I've cut *way* back on the number of technical books I'm buying. A book must provide me not only with information, but organize and present that information in a way that allows me to efficiently locate and apply it. Ubuntu Hacks fulfills that requirement.

SQL In A Nutshell, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0596005733 |
Book Description
A poorly performing database application not only costs users time, but also has an impact on other applications running on the same computer or the same network. SQL Tuning provides an essential next step for SQL developers and database administrators who want to extend their SQL tuning expertise and get the most from their database applications. There are two basic issues to focus on when tuning SQL: how to find and interpret the execution plan of an SQL statement and how to change SQL to get a specific alternate execution plan. SQL Tuning provides answers to these questions and addresses a third issue that's even more important: how to find the optimal execution plan for the query to use. Author Dan Tow outlines a timesaving method he's developed for finding the optimum execution plan--rapidly and systematically--regardless of the complexity of the SQL or the database platform being used. You'll learn how to understand and control SQL execution plans and how to diagram SQL queries to deduce the best execution plan for a query. Key chapters in the book include exercises to reinforce the concepts you've learned. SQL Tuning concludes by addressing special concerns and unique solutions to "unsolvable problems." Whether you are a programmer who develops SQL-based applications or a database administrator or other who troubleshoots poorly tuned applications, SQL Tuning will arm you with a reliable and deterministic method for tuning your SQL queries to gain optimal performance.

Excellent resource for the Oracle DBA.......2007-01-09
Dan Tow has created a marvelous resource. With complex queries, it is often uncertain what is the best query plan. Dan Tow takes the mystery out of that process. He details a methodology that will give you the best query plan with a high degree of certainty. He also provides insights into how to achive the desired query plan.
A Work of Genius.......2006-07-22
I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.
This book is about tuning SQL queries in a systematic and scientific manner. It is above all about determining the optimum order in which the query engine should access the tables involved. My quibble was that join order is only a part of the whole tuning problem and most of the time the query optimizer got it right anyway. While this is true, I see now that it misses the point.
The fact that the optimizer gets it right so often allows us to take join order for granted. But how do we know the optimizer got it right unless we know what the optimum join order is? That is what this book teaches, a methodology and an elegant system of notation that allows us to determine the optimum join order of the most complex query. As the author points out, the number of possible join orders increases factorially with the number of tables involved. An 8 table join has 40,320 possible join orders. That rules out trial and error for all but the simplest queries.
It turns out that analyzing and diagramming according to Tow's method gives you a deep architectural understanding of the query and the problems that face you. It gives you a plan to which you can apply the tools of the trade, indexes, code optimization, etc.
This is a book that will be on the shelf of serious performance tuning professionals for as long as SQL is the language of data manipulation.
The first real SQL Tuning method........2006-02-27
I have worked with Oracle databases and SQL tuning since 1987, and the reason I recommend Dan's book so highly to anyone working with SQL is that his method is the first real method I've seen in this field. There are many approaches out there, but they all fall into the Guess & Grimacing or Checklist categories. Dan's is a REAL method, and it works for all SQL-based databases. It's so far the only SQL tuning book I can recommend. Any DBA, developer and troubleshooter working with database-centric systems should know this stuff.

A Real Job Saver .......2005-07-28
I was entangled in the web of horrible response time queries, not knowing what to do (except the darn hit ratios were maximum). In utter frustration, I was putting an index here and dropping an index there, inserting a hint here and then setting a parameter there.
Within 1 day of reading Mr. Dan Tow book, I was able to bring my biggest thorn query from 8 hours response time to just 10 minutes. Boy was I blissful. Certainly Dan Diagrams rock.

Want to tune? Don't buy this book!.......2007-07-15
If you want to learn how to tune a car then this book is useless as it basically just tells you to take it to someone else to get it done for you.
informational but not technical enough for me.......2007-07-14
most sections are explained with enough detail to get you going on your first turbo project but the book lacks in a few areas I find troubling. I shouldn't have to buy more than one book on turbocharging but I'll find it necessary if the internet can't fill me in on what is missing. One section that comes to mind first is compressor wheel selection. The book goes into a lot of detail about turbine wheel selection but then leaves you guessing with phrases like "compressor wheel selection is so advanced it would require another chapter in this book". This isn't an exact quote, but this general answer is used several times as a cop out. As it happens, the difficultly of selecting a proper compressor wheel WAS one of my reasons for buying a book on turbos. Worse, the book doesn't direct you to more specific references where you can get the information. It is decent book but several things are missing, enough that this book isn't enough to teach you all you need to know about building a custom turbo system. I am mildly disappointed but I have found not a better book on turbocharging yet, otherwise I would give a recommendation.
Easy Turbo Theory Tips.......2007-05-25
I found this book to be quite good. The theory in it was very well presented, and easy to understand. I also liked all the graphs and pictures. I now feel more confident in strapping junkyard turbos to a well running car.
Overall, I am very happy with this book!
Great for the Do-it-yourself person.......2007-05-22
Well written from cover to cover. Filled with spot on information to start you way toward that turbo power that everyone wants. Every chapter gives you usefull formulas and examples to began building your engines basic platform. Will point you in the write direction.
A nice cover but..........2007-05-12
I was expecting a lot of specific tuning tips as was promised in the description
It didn't tell me what I already knew. Too much basic information.
It's a perfect book for a beginner or a tuner wannabe.

Skillful Oracle book!.......2007-01-03
The way in which the concepts are explained by the authors is Skillful.
Tired of reading obscure explanations about latches?
If so, read this book to learn it.
The authors were able to explain what Oracle latches are and how they work.
It's the only one book you need to understand how Oracle wait events should be used as a tuning tool.
It's a "definitive guide!"
Kirtikumar Deshpande, K. Gopalakrishnan are the Best Authors !.......2006-11-10
I loved this book and it has helped me many many times to reduce the contention in database , thus by improving the performance by 100% to 150%...
With this book, I was actually able to implement the concepts, whereas other books I read , were more derived from oracle manuals.
Thanks to Kirtikumar Deshpande, K. Gopalakrishnan for this book,
If you need to tune the database, this is the book for you.
Bye Bye Cache Hit Ratio .......2006-07-29
This is one of my favorite books. It gives easy to understand descriptions and examples. It is a must have for tuning. It is nicely organized and highly useful in a "crisis" situation.
Hats off to Kirti & Richmond and to the editors I don't have to remember everything 'cept where I put this book.
OWI Gold Mine !!.......2006-06-06
An excellent read, I have to say that it exceeds my expectations. For those who are just getting exposed to the myths of OWI, a must read from cover to cover.
Having worked in Performance Tuning for the last few years I never come across a book which is complete in itself and needs no additional reference to other books or documents.
The authors of this book have done an excellent job in exposing invaluable information on Oracle wait Interface. Particularly, they targeted the most important waits that one must pay attention to while dealing with Oracle performance issues. On the contrary to misconceptions floating around usage of x$ which was thought to hamper performance the author clearly demonstrates its use throughout the book.
This is one of a kind book available. A book like this should be part of all serious DBAs reference collection. More importantly one of the very very few books that helps not only identifying the problem but actually offers a solution for the same....provides a cause for the event and ways to alleviate it.
Kudos to the authors for writing such a wonderful book and would highly recommend it for anybody wanting to plunge into the OWI gold mine.
Fantastic work
From,
Vinod Haval
Book Description
Oracle system performance inefficiencies often go undetected for months or even years--even under intense scrutiny--because traditional Oracle performance analysis methods and tools are fundamentally flawed. They're unreliable and inefficient. Oracle DBAs and developers are all too familiar with the outlay of time and resources, blown budgets, missed deadlines, and marginally effective performance fiddling that is commonplace with traditional methods of Oracle performance tuning. In this crucial book, Cary Millsap, former VP of Oracle's System Performance Group, clearly and concisely explains how to use Oracle's response time statistics to diagnose and repair performance problems. Cary also shows how "queueing theory" can be applied to response time statistics to predict the impact of upgrades and other system changes. Optimizing Oracle Performance eliminates the time-consuming, trial-and-error guesswork inherent in most conventional approaches to tuning. You can determine exactly where a system's performance problem is, and with equal importance, where it is not, in just a few minutes--even if the problem is several years old. Optimizing Oracle Performance cuts a path through the complexity of current tuning methods, and streamlines an approach that focuses on optimization techniques that any DBA can use quickly and successfully to make noticeable--even dramatic--improvements. For example, the one thing database users care most about is response time. Naturally, DBAs focus much of their time and effort towards improving response time. But it is entirely too easy to spend hundreds of hours to improve important system metrics such as hit ratios, average latencies, and wait times, only to find users are unable to perceive the difference. And an expensive hardware upgrade may not help either. It doesn't have to be that way. Technological advances have added impact, efficiency, measurability, predictive capacity, reliability, speed, and practicality to the science of Oracle performance optimization. Optimizing Oracle Performance shows you how to slash the frustration and expense associated with unraveling the true root cause of any type of performance problem, and reliably predict future performance. The price of this essential book will be paid back in hours saved the first time its methods are used.

Method R: Optimizing Oracle Performance Using Extended SQL Trace Data.......2007-04-03
There are certain "camps" in the worldwide Oracle community. For example, there is the "Oak Table Network" of "Oracle scientists" who seek thorough understandings of issues backed up by details, tests and proofs. Contrasting is the "Silver Bullet" family of field-tested generals who prefer rules of thumb and quick fixes even it means some false understandings and occasionally being wrong. Cary Millsap (of the Oak Table Network) stands as someone respected by both sides.
Cary Millsap worked at Oracle for 10 years on system performance before co-founding Hotsos in 1999 [...]. He is one of the most trusted sources on matters of Oracle system performance, and "Optimizing Oracle Performance" is considered his finest work (4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon). The best way to learn more about him is to see for yourself. Here are some of his most popular articles:
"Diagnosing Performance Problems" from Oracle Magazine. A brief summary of what is covered in this book[...]
"Introduction", the first chapter from "Optimizing Oracle Performance."Chapter 1: [...]
"Case Study", the 12th chapter from "Optimizing Oracle Performance."Chapter 12 (Case Study): [...]
"Performance Management: Myths and Facts." One of his most popular articles.[...]
"Why a 99%+ Database Buffer Cache Hit Ratio is Not Ok." Another of his more popular articles.[...]
While everyone will have their own favourite parts of the book, I think most readers would agree that getting a good taste of the author's performance tuning philosophy is one of the highlights. "Method R", not to be confused with "System R" (ie. SQL), is not about looking at STATSPACK, cache hit ratios, or V$ tables and guessing. The author wanted to devise a system to identify and resolve the top performance concerns of an organisation with reliable, predictable results. The first few chapters put this method in writing in perhaps the best way since the introduction of "YAPP" (Anjo Kolk).
"The performance enhancement possible with a given improvement is limited by the fraction of the execution time that the improved feature is used." - Amdahl's Law
After several years of research, the author discovered that Extended SQL Trace Data was at the centre of "Method R". Some of the articles should give you a good taste of what Extended SQL Trace data is, if you didn't know already. By the time you finish reading this book you will know exactly how to collect and interpret all the little "ela=17101 p1=10 p2=2213 p3=1 ..." within into something meaningful. For some, that justifies the price tag right there.
So in essence I would have re-named this book "Method R: Optimizing Oracle Performance Using Extended SQL Trace Data," because that is basically what this book is about. There are some reasonably "stand-alone" chapters on other topics, for instance on the Oracle Fixed View tables (Chapter 8) and on Queueing Theory (Chapter 9), but that is not the primary focus of the book.
Those that are expecting a more broad treatment of the subject of performance tuning may be justifiably disappointed that it basically covers only this narrow aspect. However, it is covered very well, and it isn't really covered anywhere else. The author makes no apologies for this, claiming that extended SQL trace data is the only resource you will ever need for diagnosing and solving performance problems.
"You cannot extrapolate detail from an aggregate." - Cary Millsap's preference of SQL extended trace data over fixed views (system-wide average performance characteristics)
Indeed, some people might contend that the author spends a little too much time stating his beliefs, defending them, and patting himself on the back. But I think it adds a certain flavour to the book, and I respect an author who backs up his statements.
"Proving that V$ data are superior to extended SQL trace data because of the 'missing time' issue is analagous to proving that its safer to be in a room with a hungry bear if you'll just close your eyes." - Cary Millsap
The book can be a tough read in the sense that the author goes very deep into the material, and generally each subject is treated thoroughly. Chapter 9 on Queueing Theory can be a particularly overwhelming chapter. But the material is served in bite-size pieces, and broken up with tips, tricks, stories, diagrams and code (sometimes 3+ pages worth at a time, embedded directly in the middle of a chapter). There are even worthwhile exercises at the end of each chapter.
In the end, I enjoyed this book and I'm glad I got it. I don't consider it a "must have" for your Oracle collection, but I definitely feel it is quite worthwhile. I recommend it especially to those who read his articles and were very comfortable with his writing style and philosophy, and also to those that need a book on extended SQL trace data (because this is basically the only one). But even those in the "Silver Bullet" camp will be glad to add another tool to their belt.
Thumbs up.
A real page turner.......2006-10-02
This book is so interesting that on a couple occasions I've fallen asleep reading it, because I want to "find out what happens next" -- not because it is boring. Even the chapter on queueing theory that has a lot of math in it is understandable and interesting, even though I have a mild aversion to math.
It has highlighted a lot of very useful techniques to ensure you focus on the true problems, and not the various ratios we've taken as absolute truth for so many years. I can't wait to try these concepts out!

Excellent performance book.......2005-12-07
I purchased this book and did not open it for about 4 months. After reading the first 25 pages or so I became motivated to read more and finish it. It took me about 2 weeks to read through the entire book. The author does a really good job of detailing how to use Oracle tracing to troubleshoot performance related issues. With no shortage of Oracle performance tuning books this is definitely one of the better ones. This book must be one of the best performance related books because you can read it cover to cover. The book is packed with detail so you will reread several pages a few times, kind of like being in college and spending a couple of hours reviewing a couple of pages out of Calculus book.
If you are at all serious about becoming better at Oracle tuning this is a great book to read.
Dated - but good nonetheless.......2005-11-26
The wait event approach to tuning is outdated, but Millsap has done a remarkable job of getting into the insides of Oracle and he shows many techniques for improving Oracle performance.

Waste of Time & Money.......2006-06-24
This book covers very basic information about tuning. There is no actual tuning information. It's just a glossed over description of how engines work and minimal information on performance tuning. The cover states "This is the first complete guide to electronic performance tuning of Ford vehicles". BS.....this is not a guide to tuning. There is a section covering Diablo tuners and how they work. Hmmmmm, wonder if this section was included because the author has an interest in the company? There is a section on cooking the author's favorite recipes...WTF!!! If I wanted a cook book, I would have bought one. I want my money back.........not worth the price!
Very Disappointing.......2005-01-11
I read the entire book in an hour. Lots of pictures and other filler. There was virtually no information on tuning. The book was mostly just a product brochure for diablo's products and how they work. If you want to know how their products work then this book would be fine for that. I found tons more useful information on actual tuning for free on www.fordfuelinjection.com. As a an example the book would say, "the tuner modifies the fuel table to achieve maximum performance". Well no duh! I was hoping to see a bit more detail than that.
Great book!.......2003-08-28
Since I own a company that manufactures tuning hardware and software, I was curious to what this book was about.
After reading it, it does alot to help the reader understand what is involved in tuning the Ford PCM. It is not a "How-To" book but more of an in-depth guide on the process of tuning.
The book is full of colorful diagrams and picture that take the reader through each step in the tuning process. How the Ford EEC works, how chips work, how OBD-II scantools work and how the whole process is put together to tune a vehicle. The writing style is not dry like a technical manual, but well written and rather humorous at times.
I personally use the OBD-II code list in the book on a regular basis. The recipe section at the end is something unique.
If you want to know how the chip companies develop thier products, then this book is for you.
THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.......2003-06-25
I purchased this book last summer and was extremely disappointed.
From memory, here's a summary of what the book contains:
1) how engines work (2 pages or so). This is 101 material.
2) how processors work
3) how OBDII works, including signal processing (useless info for tuners)
3) anecdotal info on the Diablo chip, bordering on a sales pitch.
4) anecdotal info on Dario Orlando/Steeda.
5) lots of useless colorful pictures (PADDING) -- e.g. Dario sitting in his car tuning it (This really helps me tune mine).
6) lots of big print.
7) lots of margin space.
8) narrow columns of text.
9) a bunch of blank pages in the back for notes. PADDING.
10) a cooking (yes, COOKING) chapter on some stupid favorite recipe of the author.
11) OBDII scan codes. PADDING.
The author clearly was told to fill [n] pages so they could hardbound the thing and charge $... It reminded me of grade school when I was told to write an [n] page essay on [subject x]: Using the usual tricks, I wrote long winded sentences with no contractions, double spaced lines, and big margins. The only difference between my essays and this book is the price.
I was so mad after skimming this book that I threw it away the day I got it. I bought the book because I just purchased an EEC-Tuner and was interested in learning more about the subject. Even with my very limited knowledge on the subject, I was underwhelmed with the info presented in the book.
Don't waste your money like I did. Even thinking about this book is making me angry.
how the magic works.......2003-05-23
I am an ASE Master auto technician. 25 years of factory and aftermarket training left me with no information on the magic inside the engine control module. Now I know how the magic works. Any tuner modifing a Ford engine needs this book.

Not all it appears.......2007-10-04
I know Ken England well. Although his name is on the book he did not write it. He stopped writing books with his SQL Server 2000 Performance Edition. This all came as an unpleasant surprise to him as not only did he not write any new material for the 2005 book but he did not even get sent a copy of the book to proof.
He told me it's not great to see your name on a book you have neither written nor read but publishers apparently reserve the (legal) right to do this!
Comments from Gavin Pawell..........2007-09-05
I emailed the Introduction person for this book questioning the comments in the first chapter about Clustering...This is the email from him:
>>Gavin
I didn't write the book with him. He wrote the first two editions. This his name is on the book. I updated the book for SQL Server 2005. I'm an Oracle tuning expert and a technical writer. The person who was assigned by the publisher to tech proof the title turned out to be a DB2 person, neither Oracle or SQL Server. I don't know why the publisher picked a DB2 person to tech proof the book. I tried to insist on a SQL Server 2005 tech proof person but the publisher failed to do this. My most sincere and profuse apologies if you are finding things which are out of date. Please return the book to the retailer you purchased it from if it is too out of date. The original versions written by Ken England were very well received.

Subject: Clustering in book MS sql server 2005 - Performance Optimization & Tuning
The book makes comments about Clustering on Page 15 as not like a Hot Standby but "...provides more capacity and up-time by allowing connections and requests to be serviced by more than one computer in a cluster of computers." I do not see anywhere how SQL Server can do this. You can have a node in a cluster to fail over to another active server or passive server.
Please show me where this capability is in Books online or other reference material.
Thanks,
Thomas L
Excellent Book for Teaching Yourself Performance Tuning.......2007-06-09
I found this book an enjoyable read, (if you can say that about a SQL Performance Tuning book). It was not like reading a 'SQL cookbook' or a training text book. It was more of a self-improvement book. It showed you the basics, discussed how they related to one another and helped to change way I thought about tuning and the way I attacked the task of optimizing my SQL 2005 servers. This is a must for anyone who works with data warehouses, multiple server enviroments and any type of BI on a daily basis.

Piano Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding, Second Edition: For the Professional, the Student, and the Hobbyist.......2007-10-01
This book is very helpful. I learned a lot about my piano. Some repairs I will be able to do myself with the help of this book. For the other repairs I will hire a professional. I highly recommend this book. Now I will know what my piano tech is talking about.
Piano Servising, Tuning, and Rebuilding.......2007-01-04
I found the information to be thorough, complete and just what I needed.
Good reference for piano owners.......2006-12-22
The book overall is very well written. The tuning section is bit weak. Rebiltz explains the methodology well but there's not enough for a novice. It needs more exercise, listening techniques, explanations on physical nature of pins and pin block relationships - i.e., hammer techniques and pin settings. More information and techniques on using electronic/computer aided tuning methods will also help beginners. I have bought this book with the hope of improving my tuning skills but it falls short. The rest of the content is excellent.
A Must Have Book!.......2006-08-17
When I first received this book I have to admit that my brain froze with some of the technical jargon. Then I found the chapter on how to open the piano and everything made sense. I have always viewed pianos like I view cars. If you hit the key, or in a car, turn the key it should work! If not then I'm lost. But with this book's help I've already been able to repair two non functioning keys and I understand the problems that still need fixing. Also I was motivated to try and fix some problems by myself after being told by two professionals that they charge $100.00 just to come to the house. The piano was a freebie so I'm comfortable trying some of the repairs myself and I'm very excited that I may be able to do all of them with the help of this book. If you are looking to repair or refurbish an inexpensive piano then you will not be sorry if you buy this book. However if you have an expensive piano you may want the pro's first. This book could help you understand what they are talking about and keep you from paying for unnecessary repairs. It gives great insight on uprights, spinets, and grand pianos with detailed illustrations.
The Piano Tech's Bible........2006-07-17
It all starts here with this book. If you want to know about what goes on "under the hood" this is the book to get. There are sources for more detailed accounts of individual subjects, but if you had to pick one book to cover the subject - this is it.
Book Description
This book provides users and manufacturers of PID controllers, as well as educators, with a better understanding of PID control. This second edition takes stock of new developments in digital PID controllers. Modeling methods, implementation details, and problem-solving techniques are presented to help you improve loop performance and product quality.
The book examines the auto-tuning and adaptation features of several commercial controllers and it discusses measures for dealing with specific challenges such as reset windup, long process dead times, and oscillatory systems. Design methods and tuning rules that consider factors such as load disturbances, measurement noise, model uncertainty, and set point response are also recommended.

From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-10
An excellent reference about PID controllers, Process Models, and Tuning Methods.
I have been working for more than 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Safety and Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. I found this book to be a good bridge between the theory and industrial practical applications of PID controllers.
A readable text that will be useful for students and practitioners of Process Control.
A survey on a broad topic.......2006-01-31
This book is a survey on a broad topic of PID control.
Plainly explains the subject rather than rigorous anlaysis.
To get the idea and for reference, this book will inform the reader well.
Very good and thought through!.......2005-04-29
I have used this book as a "self study", when I was working in control industry (Kongsberg and ABB) and found it very helpful.
I have also recommended the book to all my students when teaching control theory in the College of Bergen (Norway). This book holds mush of the traditional theory and is a bridge to get theory into practical use in the industry.
I will also mention Åstrøms new book "Introduction to Control" that I am looking forward to see in the bookstore. This book gives a traditional introduction that focus on the "full picture" and good understanding. A must for the best universities!
Good Reference.......2000-12-04
Most industrial controllers are PI or PID controllers, and few textbooks or accademic Journal articles address them. I've been working in industrial process control for over twenty years and this book is one of the best one's I've found on PI/PID control. The presentation is practical rather than theoretical (some might miss not having more math). The first four chapters summarize when PI/PID control is useful and present several of the traditional tuning methods. Chapter 5 presents new tuning algorithms that are easy to apply in practice and usually result in better control that older methods (like the atrocious Ziegler-Nichols). Chapter 6 gets side-tracked discussing commercial products that will rapidly be out of date. Chapter 7 returns to practical applications and simple examples - I was amused to see boiler drum level control discussed in one page when we've spent so much time on this problem! The one thing missing from the book is control of nonlinear systems - even the simple example of level control with a fixed stroke-time valve is omitted - but aside from this shortcoming, it is a most useful book.
It is a good reference for engineering students........1999-01-05
This book is quite good reference for engineering students to do their design project about control system.
