Title is misleading.......2007-09-12
I think the title is a misleading. It says God Without Religion. Based on the title I assumed it would talk about a god and how man made religions are flawed. The book did indeed cover the flaws of religion although perhaps too briefly. I'm sure a giant book could be written on the subject but this book just touches on it lightly. I also assumed the book would cover the topic of some kind of supreme being which would be proved by a mathematical or scientific method. After all the term "God Without" implies there is a god. Instead what it goes on to say is there is no God and everyone should worship themselves to fill the void of being godless. The Title should really say something like "There is No God and Religion is Stupid". Perhaps I just wasn't ready to stand on my head or do breathing exercises but I found the second half of the book unexpected and a little boring.
Questioning God: Healthy activity.......2007-05-14
While I can think of 3 or 4 books of a similar nature that I like more (Sam Harris' End of Faith and Letter To A Christian Nation, first of all), this is another important book that stands up to the current trend of forcing "religion" as if it were more important than moral values. This book slaps silly the idea that we benefit from (any form of) extremes when it comes to a person's spiritual life. It didn't read as enjoyably as Religion Gone Bad (Mel White, another ***** book from this year) nor as educational as Richard Dawkins, but belongs in all intelligent and questioning homes and libraries where the first amendment also gives us freedom FROM religion!
A Different Way to See Things.......2007-03-21
If you are searching for the meaning of it all, this is a book you should read. It contains wonderful insights. Whether you prescribe to the author's views or not, it is a worthy addition to a spiritual library.

Essential Reading for Religious and Non-religious.......2007-03-20
Sankara Saranam lived as an ascetic for two decades during which time he engaged in techniques for sense-introversion. His daily practice over those years led to an understanding of how the ego manifests in our mind. He shares insights based on these personal experiences in "God without Religion" to help readers learn from his spiritual journey.
Saranam wants to free the individual from the divisions created by religions of us and them thinking, believer and non-believer, saved and condemned - all divisions which create disharmony between different faiths and sometimes even engender violence. "God Without Religion" presents the idea of a universal God, which as a concept is found in writings of past philosophers and mystics.
This book engages in a debate that is essential for people to remove their prejudices based on religious dogma and intolerant beliefs. Sankara encourages a more universal perspective that transcends the parochial boundaries of many faiths.
His criticism of the shortcomings often found in religious beliefs are important to consider. For example, Saranam mentions that religions encourage the believer to look outside for spiritual salvation i.e. acceptance of rituals, sacraments etc. instead of encouraging an inner quest, which is why religions often discourage absolutely free inquiry because they make a priori suppositions.
"God Without Religion" allows readers to discover and define God from their own awareness rather than ideas of God based on accepted religious doctrine. The book doesn't provide answers about God, it encourages readers to explore their vision of God through series of questions intended to allow for self-transcendence to a universal understanding. The attitude expressed in the book is one of wonder and exploration.
The book requires an open mind in order to explore the ideas discussed by the author. The author's criticism of religious belief is valid, though ultimately it is NOT antagonistic to religion as it initially appears, since all religions are at their core are based on mystical experience, the rituals and dogmas are their outer form.
I fully recommend this book along with "Nexus: A Neo Novel," which presents a compelling psychological and spiritual journey of transformation.
This is a 6 Star Book! Godly!.......2007-03-19
I just ordered two hundred copies of this book to give as gifts to friends and family, because I can't imagine a better gift than the knowledge and genuine human heart in GOD WITHOUT RELIGION. I have never recognized a freedom from outmoded centralized institutions and sense of power as I do now, from considering the questions and challenges in this book. If God is the potential to expand our hearts and minds, this is not only a book on issues of God and religion, but a godly book. It is unique, because it's as if it was written from the inside. By that I mean it will raise different questions for every reader. It will raise just the right questions to expand your sense of self, sense of the cosmos, and sense of what is God.
Book Description
This book, HOLINESS, TRUTH AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD, is not a book for everyone. It is for those who are unsatisfied with their progress and willing to do something about it. It is for every saint who feels he cannot exist unless he finds the fullness of God.

Teaches that the "inner work" produces good works.......2007-08-23
Draw closer to God and He will incline Himself to you. It is the Holy Spirit that produces the fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control. From these internal fruit comes the outward evidence of His inner work. Works are the result of this closer walk - Holiness is an outward manifestation of the inner work. Francis Frangipane again has been led to write an illuminating work about how God's light chases away the inner darkness. Come and learn how to travel the "Highway of Holiness" from the beginning until you arrive home. Bring your heart before God so that He can show you the way.
Pursuing Christ-likeness.......2006-08-09
It appears the human heart is like a many-roomed mansion, and little do we know how dark some of those interior rooms are--if we are even aware of their existence! Francis Frangipane does a great service to the maturing of the Body of Christ by taking us on a trip to explore many of those darkened rooms which are harboring idolatry, pride and hypocrisy, presumption and falsehood, to name but a few of the sicknesses afflicting God's people. The way to health and purity, indeed "wholeness", is by passionately pursuing "holiness" of heart. It is the pure in heart who will see God. Therefore, our goal of Christ-likeness must define our Christian walk, for holiness and sanctification must necessarily precede Kingdom power and the fruit thereof.
Excellent Book.......2006-07-01
I find this to be great reading and right on point if you are serious about improving your walk with God as a Christian. Easy to read, with short chapters that are clear and easy to understand. The author supports his thoughts with scripture. It is one that you can read over and over again and find something new to ponder.
Intimacy, not religion, is the key .......2005-10-02
This book challenged me in a major way. The gist of the book is that seeking after God is the reason for our existence and for victory in our lives. It relates how we substitute other things for what is important, an intimate relationship with Almighty God. From this intimacy with God springs holiness and victory. Power is not found in religion, doctrine, knowledge or anything other than being in the presence of God.
2nd to the Bible.......2004-09-03
I read this at least once a year, and when I open it, I am ashamed that I waited so long. The two other books I would recomend for the serious Christian Life, are: This Church is not Appearing Glorious & it doesn't seem to be Purpose Driven, by Meyers, and Why Reveval Tarries by Ravenhill. Read these books often, and you will change the world.
Book Description
This book describes how understanding the structure of reality leads to the Theory of Everything Equation. The equation unifies the forces of nature and enables the merging of relativity with quantum theory. The book explains the big bang theory and everything else.

The Real Deal.......2006-09-25
Although Mr. Wheatley is a little verbose in sections, his documentation of Zen Buddhistic Principles found throughout the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Theology, etc. forms a nice reference guide for anyone tuned into that wavelength. In particular, his explanation of how Godel's Theorem and Cantor's "Confusion" shed great light on the difference between GOD's Logic and Man's Logic should be a revelation to any undergraduate level math students who encounter these ideas for the first time. Curiously, Mr. Wheatley makes many misstatements about both Zen Buddhism Principles and the Bible, however. For example, by accepting the false biblical teaching of Original Sin, he misses the point that eating the proverbial apple gave Adam and Eve the ability to make Moral Discernments in fulfillment of GOD'S PERFECT PLAN. As proof, read Genesis 1 which states that Man and Woman were made in GOD's Image. Genesis 4 shows that Adam and Eve weren't the first humans on Earth at all, there were plenty of others by then. The allegorical meaning of the story of Eden, then, isn't that Adam and Eve were the first humans on Earth, but they were the first humans with the ability to make Moral Discernments (in GOD's Image). In fact, Moral Discernment is God's Unique Gift to Man, which is the basis of consciousness, not some Math Formula. But because the wages of the resulting, unavoidable sin are Death, many people foolishly try to return to Eden by: (1) living a sinless Life (2) by removing choice altogether by passing and enforcing strict Laws (3) by attempting to do away with Moral Discernment and the resulting consequences for our actions altogether by trying to remove Shame from Shameful actions. GOD is not some ethereal Man-In-Space, but is simply the Totality of all Real Things, The Set of All Real Sets. GOD's Love manifests itself from the amazing sub-atomic relationships that underly this magic Life all the way to the grandest of Macroscopic Scales, the Interconnected Totality itself. The Zen Buddhism connection can be found by simply superimposing the 0 symbol and the symbol for infinity (8 on its side) in Mr. Wheatley's supposedly "new" formulation that 1 = 0 x infinity. Superimposing them gives you the yin-yang symbol. A potential disadvantage of artificially separating the infinity from the zero, however, is that Mr. Wheatley is able to equate the entire expression to be equal to 1. This potentially might obscure the fact that the deepest meaning of the yin-yang symbol is that it is both 2 and 1 AT THE SAME TIME. His overall equation does preserve that important meaning by utilizing a single element on one side of the equation and two elements on the other side of his final TOE equation. This may be hard to see for some at first, however, which could potentially obscure the richest meaning of this beautiful symbol/equation. A much more GODLY TOE, in my opinion, comes from Euler, who discovered that e ^ (i * pi) - 1 = 0. When someone can explain that relationship, then they can say they know GOD.
A life changing experience??.......2005-06-13
This book is an easy read and does succeed in being somewhat thought-provoking. However, I am a little surprised at the awesome, "life changing" experience it apparently was for many of the readers. Wheatley's conclusions were interesting but nothing really new. All of his material should have passed through the mind of any thinking person without the aid of this book.
The reason I gave this book three stars is because he uses unneccessarily wordy ways of describing simple things. Also, the author and many other reviewers insist that Wheatley makes only one assumption. Wrong-his whole theory is one big assumption.
Overall though it was a very interesting and worthy book.
Should be Required Reading for everyone.......2004-06-26
This book will change your life. You will never think the same way you did before reading it.
I have a degree in chemistry and I think this book should be read by everyone in the sciences. Without a doubt, the best book I've ever read. Why and what are two of our best friends
A Very Important Book.......2004-01-26
I must preface my review by stating that I have never been so excited and moved by a book that I have wanted to contact the author. That is what I found myself doing upon reading this book. This book is just what its title says. The author does not "miss a beat" describing in great detail using practically every aspect of scientific knowledge from atomic structure through logic to quantum theory---we are even given a valuable explanation of Love. This text may be challenging to read for those unfamiliar with scientific terminology. And it can also be difficult for those with a science background, such as myself. However, for me it is well worth the work necessary to strive to understand the unfamiliar terminology. (I am continually learning from this book. I am presently on my third reread).
One of the author's main messages is "not" to believe anything without first verifying it with reality, as we know it. He calls it the "Personal Explanation Principle". He indicates that religions are just such belief systems that we as people "fall" victims of; because we do not verify the beliefs with the facts, as we know them, of reality. He gives a very detailed explanation of how the New Testament can be explored using his methodology.
The author methodically and meticulously walks us through his thought processes, which took 30 years to assimilate, of delineating the structure of reality and the nature of consciousness. Included in the "walk" are many of reality's phenomena made revelatory. An example of that, for me, would be the dual nature of light. It's particle/wave duality, which is explained as "functions". Also, when the author took me on the mental journey of "Setness" an exhilaration of the magnificence of life swelled up in me.
To me this is a very important book that should be read by all that are seekers of truth. It is for all those wanting to gain an understanding of the purpose for their existence, wanting to know where life is headed towards, and wanting to know who God is.
This book will enlighten and develop one's mind substantially. You will discover that this is our objective.
And yes, I contacted the author and he responded openly.
Illuminating!!!.......2002-12-30
This is a really great book. It combines philosophy and science in order to tackle a multitude of existential problems. The author's style of writing is fresh and alive, I recommend ths book to anyone interested in expanding the fronteirs of their understanding. Books I also liked are a Universe in an Nutshell by Steven Hawkings and Descent into Illusions by Paul Omeziri.

Caution - This book might shake your faith..........2004-11-24
I was amazed at the depth of this book. Chapter after chapter Wells was able to pin point weaknesses and compromises being made daily in our churches. This book is not just a for pastors and clergy, its a laity book that takes the reader into areas of church life that will make or break Christianity.
A Classic.......2002-10-18
In this sequel to the groundbreaking 1993 book entitled "No Place for Truth" (which is also strongly recommended), a professor from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary shows how evangelical churches have slowly but surely fallen for the values of postmodern society. Christian ministers in particular should pay close attention to Wells' thoughts, as he calls for a return to preaching God's holiness as an antidote to the church's compromised state.
Strong Evidence for repentance and faith among the church.......2001-01-26
This second in Well's trinity follows on the heels of "No Place For Truth." In it, Well's strongly presents evidence that Christianity is on the brink of caving into the pressures of a postmodern culture and world that it finds itself in.
As in the kings in the Divided Kingdom, many chose to compromise and/or align with the enemies or allies. We know how this turned out for the church. Will the church today heed prophecy such as Well's before it's too late?
Expressing the opinion that the church is being attacked both within and without to speak different messages with different words, Wells challenges the church to be the church; to say a different message which confronts and challenges the world to align itself with the world's Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier.
Very insightful and thought provoking ........1999-11-06
I am reading this book as part of a course in basic theology, and it is very illuminating. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in the church who wants to tell about "the reason for the hope that lies within you..." It is not just for a few pastors and teachers to know theology; it is the opportunity of everyone in the church.
Thoughtful, educating, meant for someone who wants to think.......1999-07-11
I think this is one of the best books I've read of serious Christian thought in the last few years. He teaches on ramifications of our po-mo thinking and also brings out clearly the way our consumer bent way of thinking has dictated the presentation of the gospel. Many times in ways we do not even see or sense...yet the 'consumer as king' mentality has not been challenged in the church and the believer feels at home sitting in judgement on eternal truths. An extremely worthwhile read,

So-so.......2007-07-28
This book had the information but the way it was worded was way to heavy and serious for the age group it is aimed at. They seemed to be trying too hard to sound grown up and knowlegable and just ended up making sex a boring topic.
Excellent book with pictures for teens to learn godly behavior........2007-06-11
First saw this book at a Family Life Weekend to Remember for couples (a highly recommended event). The book is part of a 4 part series, but if your kids are teens already, like ours, then it's good to just be able to buy the book that is for them.
Truth about Sex.......2006-08-29
My husband and I spent a year preparing for the coming "talk" with our oldest when I came across this series. There is 4 books in all. We have used books 1-3 and have been extremely pleased with how the content and each topic was handled. At first I was worried that some levels where a little more than I was ready for my kids to know but we went ahead and covered each topic in the book. My kids LOVED them and appreciated having all their questions answered so throughoughly and lovingly. The authors do an outstanding job communicating the love God has for them and what His intenstions are for sexuality. I highly recommend these books for children of all ages.
A good place to start.......2004-04-03
As a Christian Parent raised in a family that never discussed sex, I found this book (and the series) to be a great starting point. It hits all the right topics in a way that communicates a Christian view without using guilt or sounding preachy. Parents should read it themselves, then pass it on to their child. Don't wait for your child to hit puberty before you start talking about this important subject.
Used by a large west-coast church for sex education.......1997-10-22
La Jolla Presbyterian Church uses this book as the basis forits sixth-grade sex education program. The program has grownremarkably over the last three years. To see how the book is used, go to www.datana.com/mary and use the "Sex Education for Christian Teens" link.
Book Description
DO YOU BELIEVE?
Gerald Schroeder, an MIT-trained scientist who has worked in both physics and biology, has emerged in recent years as one of the most popular and accessible apostles for the melding of science and religion. He first reconciled science and faith as different perspectives on a single whole in The Science of God. Now, in The Hidden Face of God, Schroeder takes a bold step forward, to show that science, properly understood, provides positive reasons for faith.
From the wisdom encoded in DNA and analyzed by information science, to the wisdom unveiled in the fantastic complexity of cellular life, to the wisdom inherent in human consciousness, The Hidden Face of God offers a tour of the best of modern science. This fascinating volume will open a world of science to religious believers, and it will cause skeptics to rethink some of their deepest beliefs.
Download Description
In his first two books, Gerald L. Schroeder illustrated how science and the Bible can be reconciled without violating the letter, or spirit, of either. Now he takes a step back, offering a tour of modern science, from the universe as a whole to the smallest particles of matter, to show that there is an underlying wisdom beneath it all. From the subtle forces of nature that make life possible to the amazing complexity of the human body, a single consciousness shines through. Schroeder seamlessly combines physics, biology, and neuroscience to illuminate the unity of the great plan behind the universe. Drawing on traditional religious topics such as free will, evil, and man's place in the universe, Schroeder shows that scientists have sometimes changed the surface debates on these issues, but have mainly deepened our appreciation and understanding of the ultimate questions, and of God's place in the world. For anyone who has ever felt the mystical proddings behind the wonders of nature, here is a clear explanation of why such proddings are eternal and crucial.

the wonder of the cell.......2007-09-15
incredible journey into the world of molecular biology. Pretty hard to beleive it is all the end result of blind unguided chance. This the the book that turned world famous atheist philosopher Antony Flew into a believer.
Life-changing book.......2007-08-01
This is a life-changing book. If you have an open mind about creation vs. evolution, then read this. I've purchased 5 copies of this for people I thought you find it interesting. Of the ones that had open minds and read it, all said it was the most amazing book they'd read.
The details on conception to childbirth is worth getting the entire book
I Love this book.......2007-06-15
A must read for anyone wrestling with the question of the inter-relationship of modern science and religion. It shows eloquently what wisdom is found in the Torah and how very relevant it is to modern scientific theory. It is for those that want to immunize themselves from today's religion bashers and more importantly from existential angst. The only flaw in his argument, pointed out to me by a marine biologist, regards the claim that the sudden appearance of one celled organisms in the fossil record argues against evolution, i.e., why didn't the component parts of a cell show up first prior to the whole cell? Answer: The fossil record must start with one celled organisms, it's the smallest unit to be preserved as a fossil. Barring that, the metaphysical nature of the universe is superbly reasoned. Kudos to the author.
Most Definitely Not Science.......2007-05-19
I read this book on recommendation by an "opponent" in a theological debate that claimed it had many important discoveries. This is hardly the case. It was a painful read. While Mr. Schroeder can bandy scientific terms about that will impress the average reader, it takes an astute reader to recognize that, nearly from the first sentence, he puts out his core premise which is completely unsupported.
As is far too common with these sorts of tomes, the author makes great, unsupported leaps of logic, thereby invalidating their argument (as least from a scientific perspective). Add to that the citing of scripture as support for his "findings" and you have a book that feels good to those already in the choir. Others will look at it with a puzzled expression.
This book may be whimsy or wishful thinking, but it is most assuredly not science.
Good title.......2007-04-14
Interesting; In the Bible (can't remember where)does indicate that God does hide his face. Bought the book for my kids to read-not a good idea because the author gets technical; however, it did give me the opportunity to discus it w/ them. The criticism I have read that Schoeder does not address one issue or another is inaccurate. Clearly, they did not read the book before they wrote. Just another example how liberal-types have let themselves become influenced by evil a symptom of which is having disdain for truth among other things. Don't believe me? Look at what they have written and read the book for yourself.
Book Description
As a young priest, Luigi Giussani was troubled by Catholicism’s inability to effectively deal with secularism or laicism. In 1954 he began to develop a vision of faith rooted in experience. His ideas resonated with students and led to the birth of the Gioventù Studentesca (Student Youth) movement. Known today as Communion and Liberation, the movement is flourishing in Italy and around the world, including Canada, the United States, Brazil, Uganda, and Britain. The Journey to Truth Is an Experience is the first English translation of Il Cammino al vero è un’esperienza, Giussani’s early works on the Christian experience, written from 1959-64. It begins with a guide on how to live the Christian life within the Student Youth community, followed by a call to base one’s relationship with Christ on the example set by the apostles and other figures in the New Testament. Giussani concludes by outlining the movement’s mission and the possibility for community, charity, and communion in the Christian life.

Great Introduction to Christianity.......2007-09-27
I am using this book with our 3 year old son and it is a fantastic resource for teaching him about God. He's a little young for it, so I read it to him during lunch so I'll have a captive audience. Each chapter starts with questions and answers and then is followed by a story to demonstrate the truths learned in the question and answers. I know he's catching some of it because he'll ask me questions about a previous days story or my favorite when one day while reading about how Jesus commanded the water and wind to stop in another of his story books, he turns to me and asks me "Mama, can they (the disciples) see Jesus?" I tell him yes. He thinks for a moment and then asks "Mama, is he (Jesus) pretend?" "No sweetie, Jesus is real and they can see Him," I reply. Then he says "But we can't see God Mama." He had grabbed two concepts from Big Truths for Little Children: We cannot see God because He is a spirit and Jesus is God." So this lead to a disucssion of the Trinity, and I don't know how much he understood, but nonetheless he's picking it up bit by bit, precept upon precept.
Great Addition.......2007-06-29
This book has been a great addition to the Kid's Quest curriculum by GCP that we use for our Wed night kid's bible study! The chapters/stories are short, applicable and entertaining.
Wonderful book.......2006-05-26
What a wonderful book. The stories are just long enough to hold the attention of a child, but not so long that they get bored. We look forward to using it in our family devotion time every night.
Perfect Choice for Parents with Small Children!.......2005-11-05
I have a 6 year old son. My wife and I desired to teach him "Big Truths" but in a way that was interesting and fun. I began searching for books that would help us to do this. Finally, I found this book, "Big Truths for Little Kids". Perusing it at the store, I felt like it would fit the bill. But once I got it home and began reading it to my son, I knew it was the right choice! He loves hearing the stories in this book. The book uses short stories to teach kids biblical truths in a practical and insightful way for children. All of the stories have the same characters - Caleb, Cassie, Angus, Daniel, etc. After the first few stories, your child will know all the characters and relate to them. This makes the stories even better! My son looks forward to reading these stories with great anticipation. He thinks it's just fun, but all the while he is learning great spiritual truths that will help him grow into a man of honor and integrity. I cannot thank the authors enough for the wonderful service they have done by writing this book for children. Thank you!!!
Big Truths for Little Kids.......2005-10-04
This book is awesome. We are using it in our homeschool tutorial for open assembly. The children love the stories and they can hardly wait to hear the next one. It gives the children a firm foundation in Christ. The book also provokes further questions from the children. I highly recommend it for home or school use.

One Of Nelson's Great Study Bibles Ever Published.......2003-10-14
When a good study bible comes along, it seem the publishers (Nelson) always want to discontinue a great product. This NKJV Bible is very hard to find and even the Bookfinder web site has some sellers who, if they are lucky to acquire this bible, try to sell the bible at an outrageous price. Just by this action of selling this bible at a high price, by some book dealers, tells me and YOU that this bible is a great study bible. The demand is very high for this bible; even being out of print. There is alot of information crammed into each page, but there is still enough room for notetaker on each page.
The negative of this bible are few but it is worth mentioning. One, the binding is flimsy as usual by Nelson's standard. Two, the font is at the regular setting of "8". I wonder who thought the standard for Bible fonts should be set at 8. This size is no good for anybody. Publishers who read reviews, please wake up an smell the coffee; 10 font and higher is better.
Overall, I wish I had a second copy, but due to its scarcity I guess my copy will go to a company that restore damage bibles someday.
Take my word for it, it is a good idea to search for this bible on ebay, bookfinder, and other out of print book dealers at all times.

A great Bible that is difficult to find.......2003-04-01
This Bible is filled with graphics, charts and notes that help make the subject matter clear and easy to follow. With a format similar to USA Today, it really captures the reader's attention and is great for bible studies. People who have this Bible are very dedicated to it. Unfortunately finding a new, leather copy is nearly impossible!
great source for bible groups.......2003-01-19
This book offers fascinating insight into the historical background to the period that the gospels were written. While it does not give the latest research on the background to the actual writing of the texts it does give excellent suggestions and is helpful for group discussion. If you are looking for a simple reading, this is not your book but if you are looking for a 'feel' for the time of the gospels, this is excellent.
Too much useless clutter.......2002-08-25
This bible has been sitting on my shelf unused for 2 years. It's hard to find the scripture verses for all the bible history notes and maps, which distract the reader from what the scriptures are really trying to say. This book is great as a Mid-East history text book, but much less useful as a supplement to living a victorious Christian life. I highly recommend the Spirit Filled Life Bible as a useful alternative to this study bible.
A MUST HAVE BIBLE.......2001-03-18
I have just stared my christian walk and this bible helps me a lot in understanding what God is saying to me through His word. The articles are indepth and relevant in today's world and the characters of the bible really come alive along with the maps and the many explanations of what life was like in those days. I would recommend this bible to all christians whether new or mature.
