Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for church interpreters.......2007-09-02

This book is intended for people who are already fluent in ASL - there are no signs pictured. If you need a religious sign dictionary, try Religious Signing by Elaine Costello or Interpreting at Church by Leo Yates Jr.

However, this an excellent resource for church interpreters. Hymns have been a thorn in my side when interpreting church over the years. Sometimes you can't find out what hymns will be used in advance or don't have time to prepare, which is often as labor intensive as interpreting Shakespeare. This book takes a lot of work out of conceptually accurate church interpreting.

1 out of 5 stars Hymns for Signing-American Sign Language.......2006-06-03

If you are learning to sign or if you have experience, this book is a major disapointment! It is very confussing. It doesn't tell you what things mean. I don't understand what reference the writer used that would enable the reader to figure it out.

1 out of 5 stars No Signs.......2005-07-07

When I purchased this book I expected to see the signs with the words. The book is a good resource, but unfortunately not quite what I expected. Would not have purchased if I knew the signs were missing.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2003-08-30

This is just what I needed. After taking ASL classes, I knew the signs, but it was difficult to know how to put some some of the language and phraseology of the hymns into terminology that would be signable and easily understood. Having this book makes for a lot less pausing and fingerspelling.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource for Signing Hymns for the Deaf.......1999-07-03

What a wonderful resource for a deaf ministry! Its focus is on relaying the concepts in the hymns to the deaf, not the exact words of the hymns (it is in ASL not Signed Exact English.) It does not have pictures of how to sign the hymns because its focus is not for people who just want to let the hearing watch an interpreter and see the beauty of the signs. It is to allow the person signing to get the message of the hymns to the deaf person in the congregation without having to spend countless hours thinking of how to put English into ASL. So it is written for those who have a signing vocabulary and a little experience. And the dictionary references are helpful so if there is a word you don't know how to sign...you can look it up. It is easy for even a beginner like me to use. Again, its purpose is to allow the signer to look at the words in this hymnal and sign them as they are written. It definatly cuts down on the amount of time needed to prepare for worship.

Book Description

Inside Catholicism presents the ritual practices and icons of the Catholic church in a new light that focuses on the sacred path that lies beneath the historic edifice. Drawing on the rich archives of Christian art and iconography, Inside Catholicism is an introductory primer on Catholic practice, as well as a stunning visual record of the faith. Inside Catholicism is designed to be an invaluable tool for anyone who wishes to examine or reexamine the world's largest single denomination.

Inside Catholicism follows the global reach of the church; from a somber soldier's mass in Sarajevo to a churchyard in Guatemala, where the Quich, Maya celebrate their unique blend of Catholic and native rituals. You'll visit Pope John Paul II in the painted halls of the Vatican, and a group of nuns as they feed the homeless in San Francisco. Through the camera lens, Inside Catholicism explores the faith of nearly a billion people, celebrating the sacraments, at prayer, on pilgrimage and in their communities.

5 out of 5 stars ONCE AGAIN THE GREAT CATHOLIC THEOLOGIAN AND PRIEST THE REV. FATHER McBRIEN.......2006-10-14

places within our wondering hands the full breadth and scope of our glorious church.

Carefully structured around the Seven Sacraments and the Holidays (please visit amazon [...] excellent Search Inside feature and review the Table of Contents as well as the copyright) this profondly moving and prayerful book inspires life long Catholics as well as curious public and potential converts to the Universal Church.

The learned and prayerful presence of the great America Catholic priest and academic the Rev. Fr. Richard McBrien, professor of Theology at the Catholic University of Notre Dame and weekly columnist on Catholic Theology and practice, carefully and meditatively guides us through this universe of Faith and Prayer in Action, from the Vatican to the farthest missions, truly revealing how and why we are the Universal Church of the poor and the pilgrim.

The only possible supplement to this book may be Fr. McBrien's own Encyclopedia of the Catholic Church, and of course his landmark work on Catholicism, both well received and awarded tomes of theology. Then read your Dorothy Day, Archbishop Oscar Romero and the Brothers Berrigan for the greatest heros of our one universal Faith.

See also of course Good Pope John XXIII's PACEM IN TERRIS and his biography "The Pope of the Council" by Peter Hebblethwaite (the 1994 edition only) and of course Pope Paul VI's mighty encyclical of the mission of our Church POPULORUM PROGRESSIO.

3 out of 5 stars A illuminating but perplexing look at Catholic worship.......2005-01-13

Inside Catholicism is Richard McNeil's pictorial attempt to present the rites and practices of the Roman Catholic Church to outsiders. Anyone familiar with US history knows that certain historical eras were marked by fear and hostility of we "papists" and "Romanists." A getting-to-know-you book is not a crazy idea. Using photographs of a variety of Catholic churches and settings, McBrien shows Catholics at public and private worship -- at Mass, during Baptisms, anointing the sick, and so on.

As helpful as the book sometimes is, it does have significant drawbacks. McNeil's photos were taken in a variety of settings -- from American churches of the Latin and Orthodox rite, to St. Peter's in Rome, to Hispanic settings, to out-of-the-way locations I could not identify and which were not well-identified in the credits. A photo supposedly illustrating a sanctuary has no visible altar or lectern -- a perplexing omission. If I, a lifelong Catholic in a ministerial master's program, was confused by this hodge-podge of images, imagine the reaction of someone less experienced.

Missing from illustrations was evidence of Catholic devotional life (except for one photo of a woman holding a rosary and a vignette of the Stations of the Cross). Catholic music is represented by a page of Gregorian chant, something 90% of Catholics have never heard of. There are no shots of Catholics as lectors or Eucharistic ministers, and so on. The photographs varied widely in quality, from National Geographic beauty and compositional grace down to photos that seemed cut out of the local newspaper.

If I were writing a book aimed at explaining Catholic worship to an audience of possibly-hostile non-Catholics, I would have omitted references to the supposedly pagan roots of some Catholic practices. Christmas trees (shown in a sanctuary at Christmas) and the Easter lilies (used as Easter decoration) may well have been used for pagan purposes millennia ago, but their liturgical use is hardly unique with Catholics. Pointing out the pre-Christian origin of these items just brings up the old libel that Catholic practices are barely-papered-over idolatrous practices.

"Inside Catholicism" is beautiful in its own way, but I wouldn't suggest it as an aid to prospective Catholics or as an apologia to someone with anti-Catholic leanings.

1 out of 5 stars Heretic.......2004-08-25

McBrien is a fallen away Catholic who has spent most of his life in conflict with the Catholic Church. Why he doesn't
leave the Church that he so detests is a mystery. This book like
all his others strays from Church doctrine and serves as fodder
for the liberial media, who have his phone number on speed dial.

4 out of 5 stars A nice start for the not catholic.......2001-06-18

This is a nice book that explains a few basics of Catholicism. It is filled with wonderful illustrations and full color pictures. It doesnt touch on all important Catholic subjects, but it is a nice visual book for someone wanting to learn more about The Catholic Faith and its sacraments.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, but too summarised........1998-11-30

This is a great book for people who want to know more about Catholicism. This book is rathered summarised that they infact missed out certain points of Catholicism. I meself is a Catholic. The book emphasizes alot on somethings like child baptism, and communion breaking. They should include things like famous saints, and famous Popes. Hope that there will be a book that shows more things that reflect Catholicism, and show our society to the non-believing world.

    Book Description

When popular author Adrian Calabrese's father was in surgery for a life-threatening medical condition, she asked for a sign that he would survive-and she immediately received one. Now she shares her secrets for getting clear guidance from the Universe in Sacred Signs, teaching readers a simple three-step method for receiving divine messages.

Unlike other books on the subject, Sacred Signs is not a "sign dictionary." Calabrese believes that the interpretation of a sign is as unique as the individual receiving it. The original checklists and questionnaires throughout the book help readers focus their desires to more effectively communicate with the Universe. Success stories throughout the book provide inspiration and further demonstrate how to use this personal, nondenominational approach to interpreting divine signs.

    5 out of 5 stars Bismallah al-Rahman al-Rahim..........2006-08-28

In the name of God the Merciful and the Benevolent... Thus opens every story in this book, a collection of Islamic stories for families and children. Drawn from across the Muslim world, this book collects together countless folk stories, sayings and proverbs. Excerpts from the Holy Qur'an, the Hadith and the life of Muhammad appear beside traditional Arab, Persian, Turkish, Mande, Swahili, Hausa, Pakistani and Asian fairy tales and proverbs. Historic accounts of great Muslims like Ali ibn Abu Talib, Uthman ibn Affan, Rabiah of Basra and al-Hakim stand next to the wit of Mullah Nasruddin Hodja and the poems of Sufi mystics like Saadi and Idries Shah. A huge range of cultures, countries and time periods are represented, from China and Indonesia to Al-Andalus and Nigeria, from the early days of Islam in the 7th century to the Swahili city-states of the 16th century, but all are united by the common faith of Islam.

This book is an invaluable resource for Muslim families wishing to pass on their culture and heritage to their children, but the morals and lessons contained within these stories carry a timeless wisdom that all peoples can benefit from regardless of faith. Non-Muslim families who want to teach about other cultures, or who want to show that Islam is not some evil monolithic force the media tries to portray it as, will also benefit from reading this. Stories of faith, honesty, kindness, charity, mercy and love are balaneced out with humor. The beautiful artwork and Arabic calligraphy add to this books appeal. Appearently, this book is part of a series detailing folk tales and proverbs from all of the world's great religions and there is at least one other book in the series published (this time focusing on Buddhism). I have yet to read it, but considering the outstanding quality of this book, I should like to get around to it eventually.

All in all, this is a book well worth getting. Even adults will appreciate reading some of the stories in here. I certainly did, and if you approach this book with an open mind I honestly believe you and your children will appreciate this book as well regardless of your religious or cultural beliefs.

    5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue!.......2006-03-08

All I can say is that "It's about time!" We have been taking a nice, slow pace with this book (my husband, me, and our 3 young sons) and I have come to look forward to bedtime in a way that I never have before. It's wonderful to finally come across a book about Islam that isn't political, isn't out to preach and convert, isn't about gender issues. All faiths have wisdom and gentleness within its teachings and it's a relief to be exposed to lessons we can all identify with in a book about Islam. A must for all children in this age of misinformation! (Side note: I've given this book as a gift to many kids and they --- and their parents --- all thank me for it...)

    5 out of 5 stars A Family Book!.......2005-06-23

Every family will want Ayat Jamilah: Beautiful Signs on its bookshelf. Rarely does one book address the interests of so many readers, but Ayat Jamilah has something for every family member. For children, the often humorous and always delightful stories will entertain and instruct for hours. Parents will appreciate the various lengths of each story, as they can choose a short bedtime story or a long one. Even teenagers will enjoy these tales of people struggling to find their way in confusing and sometimes dangerous situations. Young adults, often frustrated by trying unsuccessfully to please peers, will find comfort and wisdom in "The Honorable Joha, Mulla Nasruddin Hodja and the Famous Donkey Story." And the lively, colorful illustrations by Valerie Wahl add a visual "reading" to the overall experience. You won't find this book at a yard sale because it's a keeper.

If the value of this book were judged only on its ability to engage, entertain, teach, and delight, Ayat Jamilah would be a winner. However, there is an entirely additional level and depth to this book. Beautiful Signs brings to our society an opportunity to learn about a religion through the eyes of one who believes in it. Freda Crane, co-author and educator, is a Muslim who has traveled/lived in many parts of the world and been collecting these stories over the years. Her unique perspective as an American Muslim allows readers - young and old - to experience both the folktales and re-tellings of stories from the Qur'an with a cozy sense of familiarity and joy. The book is a wealth of information about Islam yet never stoops to proselytizing. Sarah Conover's previous work, Kindness (2001), brought Buddhism to us in much the same manner, and both authors deliver brilliantly in Beautiful Signs.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-06-05

I have been reading this book to my kids and they absolutely love it. There is a paucity of books of this type in the marketplace, and Ayat Jamilah definitely does its part to fill the gap.

    5 out of 5 stars Clear View.......2004-10-25

This book is remarkable in several ways. Probably the best is that it takes an informative look at Islam without being political, no easy task at this time. The authors tease out the wisdom of the religion in a provocative way that all can relate to. It is an important book.

    Book Description

The Hunab Ku glyph, a yin-yang-like spiraling symbol of balance and harmony, represents the ancient Mayan god of creation. This god fills us with intelligent energy and ushers us into the Age of Consciousness, which, according to the Mayan calendar, begins on December 21,2012. HUNAB KU illustrates and describes 77 signs that will help you navigate your way on this journey toward enlightenment. Much like a tarot deck, the book invites you to explore, reflect on, and interpret visual symbols drawn from ancient sites, artifacts, and earthworks from around the world. Believers are drawn to these symbols and sites for worship and healing from the stone burial engravings of Sanchi Stupa, India, to the New Grange spirals in Ireland, to First Nations petroglyphs in the United States. These ancient signposts of the Age of Consciousness are already available to us; let HUNAB KU be your guide.

this is a great symbolizm book. great detail and explainations. you can tell A lot of passion went into making this book.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible spiritual tool.......2005-11-03

To readers on their own spiritual journey, Hunab Ku brings images of some of the richest symbols of ancient wisdom together with "logos"--the words of the authors that help one to interpret and integrate the wisdom into their own lives. As much a book to be read as one to be used--just as such tools of self-insight as the Tarot, I Ching, and other divinition aids-- Hunab Ku offers the reader a wonderful meditation on the energies of each of the images. The museums next to my office at Harvard University are filled with artifacts from other cultures, ancient times, but they don't speak to a viewer with the richness and depth of wisdom that the Speerstras have brought to the artifacts included in Hunab Ku. A book to be kept close!

"In Hunab Ku, you'll find seventy-seven images of home-multiple ways to view or earth and ourselves. These images, like the Hunab Ku itself, measure and move us and encourage us to embark upon our own sacred journey. The Hunab Ku lies at the very center of these images, reminding us to balance our intentions, to center our understandings, and to become more conscious of what ancient wisdom continues to teach all of us today." - From the book

Hunab Ku is an ancient Mayan symbol that represents the joining of opposites. Hunab means "one state of being" and Ku means "God". Masculine and feminine, analytical and intuitive, objective and subjective, yang and yin, conscious and unconscious, external and internal-the Hunab Ku speaks to the abyss between opposing forces and, in fact, serves as a bridge between them. The archetype of the Hunab Ku is the "space between" that reflects oneness with God and the unity of all things.

The Mayans constructed several detailed calendars and these calendars reflected cycles of the Earth and humanity itself. After each cycle of 5,125 years, the "universe takes a deep breath and begins again", and according to the Maya Long Count Calendar, humanity is posed on the edge of a great unfolding of balance and understanding. Many have called this the Age of Aquarius, but the Mayans called it the Age of Itza-Age of Consciousness. Some interpretations have set the winter solstice of 2012 as the time marking a gateway to the galaxies where Hunab Ku-the great mover-will pulse and fill us all with intelligent energy.

To help prepare humanity for this cosmic awakening, authors Karen Speerstra and Joel Speerstra have presented 77 sacred symbols that create an interactive system for learning, healing, and meditation. These 77 symbols are archetypes that are universal, arising from the collective unconscious. As visual metaphors, the symbols reflect, like mirrors, the patterns that are deeply imbedded in each one of us. These archetypes bypass the rational mind, arrive on the wings of synchronicity, and invite us to journey inward. Archetypal symbols like those presented in Hunab Ku can explode us into different dimensions of understanding, restoring balance, energizing creativity, and promoting healing if we but allow them entrance.

The 77 archetypal images are organized into groups of seven color palettes, each reflecting the seven chakras. Eleven archetypal symbols are associated with each chakra, depicting the energetic pattern of the image as it relates to the seven energy vortices and their corresponding issues, gifts, and challenges. The lower chakras--represented by red, orange, and yellow-connect to the physical side of life. The upper chakras-represented by blue, indigo, and violet-connect us to the spiritual side of life. In the center likes a field of green which connects to both the heart chakra and the Hunab Ku. This area marks our central union with one another and joins the images of the body and the spirit.

There are several ways Hunab Ku can be read:

    * Conventionally, from beginning to end, as a mini ancient art history tour
    * One color group of eleven images at a time
    * As an oracle where you ask a powerful open-ended question and then turn to a random page
    * Roll dice and generate random numbers for different types of intuitive readings
    * Use a pendulum to dowse the Hunab Ku symbol for numbers/images that speak to your questions

Hunab Ku is an unconventional book that serves as a spiraling labyrinth of archetypal consciousness. The physical images span from Red 1 Great Bear (Solitude) to Green 39 Hunab Ku (Lover). The spiritual images span from Green 39 Hunab Ku (Relationships) to Violet 1 Unicorn (Unity). So one could move down a path towards the center (39) and then move back out towards the world again by passing through numbers 38 through 1.

Here are a few symbols from the book:

    RED

    Scorpion (Conflict)
    Womb (Gestation)
    Ouroboros (Unconsciousness)

    ORANGE

    Mother (Intuition)
    Water (Movement)
    Giant (Control)

    YELLOW

    Star (Inspiration)
    Twins (Androgyny)
    Wheel (Change)

    GREEN

    Dolphin (Addiction)
    Healer (Wholeness)
    Phoenix (Hope)

    BLUE

    Teacher (Knowledge)
    Sound (Vibration)
    Magician (Journey)

    INDIGO

    Moon (Dreams)
    Wise Old One (Rest)
    Chalice (Quest)

    VIOLET

    Scarab (Manifestation)
    Double Spiral (Infinity)
    Crown (Reward)

For each symbol there is a re-drawn color plate of a petroglyph, artifact, figurine, carving, wall mural, etc. These archetypes are from diverse areas such as the Americas, Africa, British Isles, Babylon, India and beyond. For example, Under Mystic (Violet 8), there is a picture of a stone labyrinth (1200 CE) from Chartres, France. For the Serpent (Red 7), there is a picture of the Great Serpent Mound (c. 1000 BCE) from Ohio, U.S.A.

For me, one of the most fascinating elements of this 330-page book is the symbol readings in the back of the book. Each of these readings is comprehensive, combining a series of archetypes for an incredibly accurate and insightful reading. There's an Insight Reading, Work Reading, Rainbow Reading, Courage Reading, and The Bard: Telling Your Story. The authors provide easy to read charts if you want to generate numbers by throwing dice or by assigning number values to the letters of your name, for example.

Frankly, I am amazed at the depth of this book. It "speaks" profoundly on so many levels. I was experiencing physical discomfort that left me feeling nauseous, discouraged and weak. Tarot didn't appeal to me at the time nor did any of my oracle decks. I remembered this book and randomly turn to a page. The symbol I was given, The Phoenix, directly spoke to my situation. Its keyword was "Hope" and offered insight into the renewing of youthfulness and the promise of future lives. (And, as synchronicity would have it, the book mentioned how the Phoenix was featured in the Harry Potter books-and I had just been reading the latest installment of the series!) I felt as through a burden was lifted from my spirit. I kept meditating on it as I went to bed. Whenever I woke up through the night, I kept seeing the Phoenix.

Amazingly, I woke up the next day with the troubling symptom entirely gone. It's been almost 24 hours and I still haven't seen a recurrence of this symptom. I feel more energy and clarity and I believe it has something to do with the symbol of the Phoenix featured in the powerful book Hunab Ku.

If you're fascinated by the world of symbols and archetypes-as well as chakras, energy, mythology, art, sacred geometry, oracles, anthropology, and spiritual evolution-this beautifully illustrated and exhaustively researched book will take you on an amazing journey through both outer and inner worlds. In the center of these worlds lies the Hunab Ku, the threshold between our present age and the coming age of enlightenment-the heart of Oneness and All That Is.

5 out of 5 stars Travel Guide to Self Awareness.......2005-08-06

Hunab Ku is a travel guide for your journey of self awareness. Through it you'll travel to cultures and symbols from all periods of humankind, gaining insight into what makes us all human at the core. The book is a treasure of knowledge beautifully presented. And as with travelers--some travel for the sights, some for the insights--Hunab Ku will lead you anywhere you want to go.

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful Journey.......2005-07-20

Hunab Ku is a happy wedding of prodigious research and lyric prose. Utilizing 77 ancient archetypal images, this book can be enjoyed as a mini ancient art history course or a resource for insightful meditation.

Once the reader is acquainted with the 77 symbols, he can turn to the end of the book for exercises in chakra healing, insight work, courage and guidance.

Spiced with appropriate quotes from the Egyptian Book of the Dead to Teresa of Avila to Thorton Wilder, Hunab Ku is a delightful journey to self exploration, knowledge and acceptance.

      Book Description

A History of God meets The Story of Art in this look at the historical interconnectedness of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim art

The art of the three Abrahamic religions-Christianity, Judaism, and Islam-has a tangled, interwoven history. Symbols cross back and forth among the three faiths, adapted to reflect that faith's specific spiritual needs. And much of this symbolic language predates any of the Abrahamic faiths entirely.

In Our Sacred Signs, Ori Soltes traces the interconnectedness of religious symbols such as the Star of David, which isn't, it turns out, exclusive to Judaism at all. He shows that the various ways that Jesus is portrayed on the cross recall an artistic tradition that is in no way unique to Christianity. And he shows that religious architectural conventions as simple as the dome represent early "pagan" traditions.

The narrative-essentially a series of overlapping stories-moves through the halls of museums and off to the holy sites of the three religions, tracing the millennia-long artistic trail that has endured even as the West moved toward secularization in the last three hundred years.

Soltes shows us how art has long been used as an instrument to take us where words cannot follow. Our Sacred Signs is a breathtaking and revelatory journey through human history, its gods, and its art.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Storm's novel (and I read pretty much evth..).......2005-01-09

This is my favorite Storm's novel (along with "Calenture" and "Wraeththu", though). The novel is truly multidimensional: it is left at the discretion of the reader to decide whether this is just an entertaining read with some allegory in it, or a wise allegoric "nutshell" of the major religions' development and influence on the "sheep" of humanity (I feel Christianity and Islam being the most relevant ones).
Unfortunately, Storm herself appears to hint that this novel belongs to the "early" stages of her literary career. Storm's introduction to "Calenture" (2001) reads: ""Calenture" is part of what I call my "Headline" [a publishing house] period, the other three novels being "Hermetech", "Burying the Shadow" and "Sign for the Sacred".... I have a special fondness for these novels, as they remind me of a time when I was stretching my creative wings...Calenture, being the last of the Headline books, exemplifies both the end of an era in my writing, and also the culmination of all I'd assimilated and experimented with along the way..It was followed by a complete change of direction on my part, with the "Grigori" trilogy, in which I adopted a more streamlined style and also wrote, for the first time, in the "real world"...". Nevertheless, after reading this, I still hope I am just too pessimistic, and Storm eventually meant a recess rather than the "end of an era". Though "more streamlined" "Grigori" books are quite entertaining at times, but,in my opinion, the earlier novels - such as "Sign for the Sacred" - are much more superior. Storm may be a decent writer of such "real world" stories as "Grigori" (and I'm sure there are enough fans of those), but her "fantasy world" novels (such as "Sign for the Sacred") is the realm where her true Genius lies. I strongly hope that Storm comes back and finishes the sequel to "Sign for the Sacred" -"Death By Sweetness" - three first chapters of which are included in this "Stark House" edition. It promises to be a masterpiece.
To conclude, I'd like to bring up a quote from "Storm Constantine: The Profession of Lying", SC's biography included in "Stalking Tender Prey" Meisha Merlin's US edition (1998/2001), which is very descriptive of "Sign for the Sacred":
"There is a game starting to be played here between Storm and her readers, a growing confidence that runs throughout her novels for Headline, where the books can be read and enjoyed on a number of levels: of story, allegory and in the pleasure of uncovering the more esoteric reference and allusions".

5 out of 5 stars Another uncanny world by Storm Constantine.......2002-05-22

This very weird book is really a philosophical parable on the value of religion. But Storm's not your ordinary anticlericalist, religion is people's drug and all that. There's something in religion that attains at the very center of human nature, and this book, apparently cutting religion to pieces, recognizes it. The strange metamorphosis of Resenance Jeopardy is very intriguing. The vibrancers are an eerie fantasy indeed, but think of the castrati in Eighteenth Century popish courts and you can find the possible source of the idea. What is most notable is the ability of Storm Constantine to devise unacanny yet convincing universes. This one is pervaded by a subtle perversion, by a purple feeling of Borgian decadence, blended whit a strange spiritual mix-up...or mishap. Was Resenance a real mystic or a charlatan? Storm Constantine lets her readers decide.

        Book Description

Hieroglyphs were far more than a language. They were an omnipresent and all powerful force in communicating the messages of ancient Egyptian culture for over three thousand years; used as monumental art, as a means of identifying Egyptianess, and for rarified communication with the gods. In this exciting new study, Penelope Wilson explores the cultural significance of the script with an emphasis on previously neglected areas such as cryptography, the continuing decipherment post-Champollion, and the powerful fascination hieroglyphs still hold for us today.
