5 out of 5 stars Teaches that the "inner work" produces good works.......2007-08-23

Draw closer to God and He will incline Himself to you. It is the Holy Spirit that produces the fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control. From these internal fruit comes the outward evidence of His inner work. Works are the result of this closer walk - Holiness is an outward manifestation of the inner work. Francis Frangipane again has been led to write an illuminating work about how God's light chases away the inner darkness. Come and learn how to travel the "Highway of Holiness" from the beginning until you arrive home. Bring your heart before God so that He can show you the way.

5 out of 5 stars Pursuing Christ-likeness.......2006-08-09

It appears the human heart is like a many-roomed mansion, and little do we know how dark some of those interior rooms are--if we are even aware of their existence! Francis Frangipane does a great service to the maturing of the Body of Christ by taking us on a trip to explore many of those darkened rooms which are harboring idolatry, pride and hypocrisy, presumption and falsehood, to name but a few of the sicknesses afflicting God's people. The way to health and purity, indeed "wholeness", is by passionately pursuing "holiness" of heart. It is the pure in heart who will see God. Therefore, our goal of Christ-likeness must define our Christian walk, for holiness and sanctification must necessarily precede Kingdom power and the fruit thereof.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-07-01

I find this to be great reading and right on point if you are serious about improving your walk with God as a Christian. Easy to read, with short chapters that are clear and easy to understand. The author supports his thoughts with scripture. It is one that you can read over and over again and find something new to ponder.

5 out of 5 stars Intimacy, not religion, is the key .......2005-10-02

This book challenged me in a major way. The gist of the book is that seeking after God is the reason for our existence and for victory in our lives. It relates how we substitute other things for what is important, an intimate relationship with Almighty God. From this intimacy with God springs holiness and victory. Power is not found in religion, doctrine, knowledge or anything other than being in the presence of God.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd to the Bible.......2004-09-03

I read this at least once a year, and when I open it, I am ashamed that I waited so long. The two other books I would recomend for the serious Christian Life, are: This Church is not Appearing Glorious & it doesn't seem to be Purpose Driven, by Meyers, and Why Reveval Tarries by Ravenhill. Read these books often, and you will change the world.

4 out of 5 stars A clear and compelling discussion of "holiness".......2007-07-22

Christian theologian R.C. Sproul offers a highly readable discussion on the nature of holiness, what it means to Christians and its essence through both the Old and New Testaments.

Sproul's passion for God comes through clearly but this is not a "preachy" book at all. Nor is it so highly technical that it is accessible only to seminary students.

The end of each chapter contains a short list of discussion questions. This book would lend itself very well, as a result, to a small group study series in churches or in small worship groups.

A gem of a book and a lucid discussion of what it means to be "holy" in relationship to God!

5 out of 5 stars Classic and Essential Reading.......2007-06-19

This book arose from a series of lectures Dr. Sproul gave during the early years of Ligonier Ministries. It has become the cornerstone of the ministry and is SO important for the average Christian to read. It is not a difficult read, but the conetnts are profound and compelling and will truly draw each reader closer to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

5 out of 5 stars Humbling.......2007-01-15

The holiness of God is truly infinite and perfect. This book can help us obtain a little more accurate understanding of holiness by increasing our comprehension of perfection and infinity. I was left thinking "I knew God was perfectly holy, but wow, He is THAT perfectly holy!" At the end of each chapter, reflection questions guide the reader to apply his or her convictions from the reading. This book escapes the curse of most theology, it manages to be both profoundly deep and yet accessibly practical.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study into what holiness really is.......2007-01-03

We used this book as a study into God's holiness, what does it mean, and how does it amplify all of God's attributes. R. C. Sproul really lays a great foundation in which subsequent studies into the nature of God can really build upon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to go deep with the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars No explanation necessary.......2006-12-28

I believe that R.C. Sproul's book, "The Holiness of God", is one of the most important theological books of this generation and that history will prove that to be true. Many reasons are obvious---the easy readability, the engaging humor, the correct use of many biblical texts, the fascinating look into the personal accounts of Martin Luther's life and how that relates to one of the most critical periods in world history (the Reformation), Sproul's masterful exposition of Isaiah's encounter with the living God in Isaiah 6, and the ease at which Sproul is able to unpack and distribute to the reader a true sense of that unfathomable yet foundational characteristic of our awesome God, namely, His holiness.
The reader is left with a deeper, more profound understanding of God's holiness and His separateness from us and, at the same time, a greater conviction of his own depravity and unworthiness before our God. This results in true spiritual growth in Christlikeness (as the Scriptures demand) as one's understanding of God's character is challenged and his sinful heart is exposed in order to be confessed and cleansed.
The truths of this book truly set me free (to love and worship my Lord as never before) when my unsaved father died unexpectedly last year and I wrestled (as Jacob did with the angel of the Lord) with my Heavenly Father and His supposed "injustice" in sovereignly sending my earthly father to an eternal hell. I read it, prayed, cried, and agonized for months until the truth of God's holiness and justice pierced my aching heart with peace and acceptance. My God became bigger, more sovereign, more just, and more loving and merciful in my eyes as I more deeply realized the truth (as Romans 9 teaches), "What right does the pot have to say to the Potter, this is unfair?". No explanation necessary.
I must highly recommend this book and suggest that you give a copy to everyone you know, believer or unbeliever, if you want them to be exposed to the foundational truth of God's awe-inspiring holiness and to be transformed into His likeness.

5 out of 5 stars You will be moved.......2007-07-19

If you get through this book and walk away unchanged then something is wrong. Nancy puts things in such a way that the concept of holiness will finally click for the reader. She helps us realize that becoming holy isn't easy but it can be done... with the Holy Spirit, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Holiness.......2007-06-25

"...I am often more bothered by others' failures than by my own shortcomings. I tend to minimize or rationalize in my life certain offenses that disturb me when I see them in others." (pg. 20)

As I read these words I realized that they easily could have come from my own journal. This is a struggle I face daily, as I clearly see the sins and shortcomings of others, but fail to see, or address them, in myself as faithfully. Nancy Leigh DeMoss, in her book Holiness: The Heart God Purifies, says:
"The message of repentance and holiness needs to be proclaimed, heard, and heeded among God's people in every generation. It must become more than a theological tenet that we politely nod agreement to; it needs to transform the way we think that the way we live." (pg. 21)

This book does just that. It clearly proclaims the message of holiness, and its importance in the life of the believer. But, it also gives the reader opportunity to make it personal - to transform sinful patterns in their own lives, and passionately pursue holiness.
In chapter one, she lists several of the misconceptions surrounding holiness:
-Somber, straitlaced people with outdated hair and clothing styles
-An austere, joyless lifestyle based on a long list of rules and regulations
-A monk-like existence - "holy" people talk in hushed tones, spend hours a day in prayer, always have their nose in the Bible or a spiritual book, fast frequently , hum hymns under their breath, and have no interest in "normal" life activities
-People with a judgmental attitude toward those who don't accept their standards
-An unattainable ideal that has more to do with the sweet by-and-by than the real world, which is right here, right now (pg. 28)

But, as this book reveals, this caricatured version is not what true holiness is about. Instead, "it is a warm, joyous, loving response to the God who loves us and created us to enjoy intimate fellowship with Him." (pg. 37) But, too often we do not see holiness for what it truly is, because we do not see sin for what it really is. "Somehow, the evangelical world has managed to redefine sin; we have come to view it as normal, acceptable behavior - something perhaps to be tamed or controlled, but not to be eradicated and put to death. We have sunk to such lows that we can not only sin thoughtlessly, but, astonishingly, we can even laugh at sin and be entertained by it." (pg. 75)

In chapter 4, "The Face of Holiness," DeMoss gives us a vivid picture of what holiness can, and should, look like in our lives, as it was lived out in the person of Christ. As DeMoss describes Christ's holiness, she reminds us that, "the call to holiness is a call to follow Christ. A pursuit of holiness that is not Christ-centered will soon be reduced to moralism, pharisaical self-righteousness, and futile self-effort." (pg. 103) In the Foreward to this book, Randy Alcorn similarly notes that
"God is the reason that we should be holy. But He's also the empowerment for our holiness. Many of us are convinced that we should be more holy, but we've gone about it wrong. To be holy in our strength, and for our glory, is to be distinctly unholy. To be holy in Christ's strength and for His glory...that's our calling, and our joy." (pg. 10)

At the end of chapters 6 and 7, DeMoss changes the tone of the book, and moves from an academic look at the various aspects of holiness, to a more reflective, personal application. She offers several pointed questions to stimulate thinking, repentance, and accountability.

I found myself convicted by the biblical truths in this book. I appreciated her honesty and boldness in exhorting believers to pursue biblical standard of holiness. I think that this book would be a useful tool for anyone who is serious about intentionally, and passionately pursuing holiness.

"As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, `You shall be holy, for I am holy.'" ~1 Peter 1:14-16 (ESV)

Book Description

"If there is anything that characterizes God's people in America today, it is the loss of the fear of God," states Henry Blackaby. When you do not fear God, he contends, you will not fear sin. The troubling result of this issue is that many Christians fail to recognize that they have sinned against God. The lack of holiness within the Church has reached epidemic levels. "True revival can only come," notes Blackaby, "when the people of God return to a healthy, holy fear of Him."

God, in His holiness, is grieved by our lack of it. In this worthy book, Blackaby urges believers to look inward, to see sin from God's perspective, and to live to the standard that He has set in Scripture. He writes, "The salvation of the nation has little to do with Washington or Hollywood-it has to do with the people of God!" As referenced in 2 Chronicles 7:14, Blackaby notes that the redemption of America lies in the repentance of the people of God. He challenges readers by adding, "If America depended on your prayer life, would there be revival?" Revival waits on the holiness of His people; this book provides the path that will lead us back.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for All Christians!.......2007-01-04

Blackaby does not shy away from real issues distracting the western church. He leaves the reader desiring to seek the Lord with a renewed passion and humblity. Revival is necessary and building within America--this book will help fuel that fire! Despite it's deep spiritual content, the book is relatively short and a quick read.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging and "painfully" accurate!.......2005-01-18

This was a really fabulous book! If you really believe in the promises of God read this book.

4 out of 5 stars So you really want to be a Christian?.......2003-12-15

Holiness is a charged word. Many associate it with backwoods ministers and "holy rollers" who take legalism and ignorant religion to the extreme. However, Blackaby strives to help the reader understand holiness as it is in the Bible, from God's perspective. Blackaby presents these three points: today's Christians no longer fear God; they cannot see sin from God's perspective; and they fail to walk on God's "highway of holiness." It is the lack in these three areas, Blackaby contends, that explain the lackadaisical and uncaring attitude present in many churches and individuals today.

This book crosses all denominations and should prick the heart that truly wants to serve God and live the Christian life to the fullest. (In some areas I felt that Blackaby repeated himself a little, but perhaps that was simply to reiterate key points that some readers could miss.) Overall, I felt challenged after reading the book. Too often Christians allow sin to get in the way of their fellowship with God, and Blackaby exposes this disaster for what it really is. Every Christian who is serious with God should read this book, and the short length allows Blackaby to quickly deliver his message.

May your experience with the Father be as awesome or even stronger than mine. Remember, it's His Holiness we seek. Praise Jesus Christ of Nazareth!

5 out of 5 stars Every Christian should read this book!.......2002-11-06

If you are hungry for a deeper walk with God you MUST read this book. The author describes in the first chapter a manifestation of the Holy Spirit that changed his life. He proceeds to exhort the reader to pursue this "FIRE" in their own lives and gives a wealth of material to help you get there.

The key is that we serve a holy God that requires for us to also be holy, but holiness is not a code of rules. Rather it's a pursuit of being like Him and with Him. As we dwell in His holy presence, we are made in His image.

Holiness is a process that takes work, time, and discipline. If holiness is your desire this book can help you achieve it.

Book Description

GOD WON'T DO YOUR JOB IN THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS. ARE YOU TRYING TO DO HIS?

We never outgrow our need for grace. Grace is every bit as important for growing as a Christian as it is for becoming a Christian. But what role does grace play when you are working out your faith? How does it fi in with striving after holiness?

"The pursuit of holiness," writes Jerry Bridges, "must be anchored in the grace of God; otherwise it is doomed to failure." Grace is at the heart of the gospel, and without a clear understanding of the gospel and grace it's easy for us to slip into legalism and a performance-based lifestyle that bears little resemblance to what the gospel offers us. What we often fail to grasp is that it is also God's grace that disciplines us and directs us toward holiness. Discipline, far from being a harsh, "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" requirement, is a natural outworking of God's gracious nature. Understanding this is an important key to true spiritual growth.

The Discipline of Grace Study Guide (designed to be used with the book or by itself) will help you unlock the mystery of what God does in bringing you to maturity in Christ and help you understand what your responsibility is. Each session in the discussion guide contains an excerpt from the book along with probing questions for personal study and group discussion.

If you've ever struggled with what your role is and what role God takes in your growth as a Christian, this study guide will provide comfort and insight as you learn to rest in Christ while vigorously pursuing a life of holiness. 5 out of 5 stars Classic treatment of an often misunderstood concept.......2000-07-28

Horatius Bonar is a "Marrow Man" through and through as he tackles an often misunderstood concept of how a Christian is to pursue holiness of life. Bonar recognizes that striving for holiness without the proper motivation will always result in mixed obedience and frustration on the one hand or a self-righteous legalism on the other. Only the love of God in Christ, experientially known, can truly motivate the sinful heart to pursue holiness with "fear and trembling." This book is exceptional and should be read by every pastor who ever wondered why his congregation lacked a zeal for Christ-likeness.

    5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2007-03-11

It's rare that I would call any book life changing, but for me, this was. Although a life-long Christian, I never really understood the concept of grace. Once I understood God's grace to me, it changed me life. I felt released from guilt. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I first did it as a women's study, but you could certainly do it alone.

5 out of 5 stars Holiness and Grace.......2006-12-27

This book is written as a marriage of two of Jerry Bridges' earlier books, The Pursuit of Holiness and Transforming Grace. In this volume he takes the two seemingly opposite concepts of the believer's responsibility to be holy versus the work of God's grace in the believer's life and welds them together, showing how they are both complimentary and necessary to the Christian experience. His theme in this portion of the book is that "you must learn to preach the gospel to yourself" - a refrain which embraces the scope of the entire work. Once he has established both the necessity of dependence upon God's grace and the necessity of engaging in spiritual disciplines, he turns his focus to the latter theme and sets forth six spiritual disciplines to which believers are called to pursue. They are (1) a discipline of dependence in which the believer trusts while he also labors, (2) a discipline of commitment to the cause of Christ, (3) a discipline of convictions in which the believer bends his mind to the Word of God, (4) a discipline of choices in which the believer puts his fleshly desires to death while putting on Christ, (5) a discipline of watching in which the believer recognizes his weaknesses and plans to avoid those pitfalls, and (6) a discipline of adversity.

This book is eminently practical as it sets forth, not only the basis of Christian growth as being rooted in the cross, but also in specific personal disciplines in which every Christian needs to partake. Bridges gives an excellent reminder of the importance of a gospel-centered ministry, not only with regard to evangelism of the unsaved, but the use of the gospel as it relates to the ongoing Christian life. He calls us to preach the gospel to ourselves - to run to the cross and to live constantly under its shadow and thereby find both forgiveness as well as motivation and strength for living a holy life.

As I read through the book, I found myself returning time and time again to the cross. The use of his disciplines provides a "nuts and bolts" approach to taking these teachings out of the classroom and applying them in a very personal way.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Book by Bridges.......2006-04-09

Consistent with his other text I have read (Pursuit of Holiness, etc.), Jerry Bridges brings a good and balanced biblical view to his writing. While he clearly states he does not wish judge anyone in his writing, Bridges also clearly challenges the reader to not take God's grace so lightly since it cost Him so much - namely His Son Jesus Christ.

The first part of the book is spent clarifying what grace is and what our part is in growing more in God's grace. The second part mainly concerns how we can actually grow. Whether a new or mature believer, you will benefit from the reading.

The last few chapters are spent discussing how God will mature us through: commitment, convictions, choices, watching, and adversity. Included in these chapters are how we can experience spiritual growth when we obey God's leading and determine to apply these truths. In short, Bridges throughout the book maintains a balance between God's grace and what we have to do to experience that grace and growth.

All in all, an excellent read. Read and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Discipline of Grace: God's Role and Our Role in the Pursuit of Holiness.......2006-03-15

This book offered some great insight and though-provoking ideas. Things you think you'd already think about, or things you may already be aware of, but in makes you examine your faith and the way it's lived out in your day-to-day life.

    5 out of 5 stars Who's Responsible for What?.......2006-02-12

The Lord says to Moses, "Speak to the congregation of the children of Israel and say to them: `You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy'".

The Master calls His followers, saying, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect".

Yet we clearly are imperfect, and our response to this calling all too often smacks of striving, pride, and ultimately of hypocrisy.

So what are we to do? And who's responsible for what?

These questions are explored by Jerry Bridges in this excellent book. The title itself is a meditation on shared responsibility in the process of sanctification. On the surface it may seem that grace and the personal discipline to pursue holiness are opposed to one another, but Bridges argues that they are not. "In fact", he writes, "they go hand in hand. An understanding of how grace and personal, vigorous effort work together is essential for a life-long pursuit of holiness".

A foundational point that the author makes is that Christians must constantly preach the Gospel to themselves. The conventional paradigm is that the Gospel is relevant to unbelievers, and that after they come to the Lord, the essential focus becomes one of discipleship. However, Bridges reminds us that daily recognition of the saving grace of the Gospel message is necessary if discipleship is not to become a matter of performance and of empty striving.

He describes how the primary responsibility of the disciple is to behold the glory of the Lord as it is displayed in the Gospel; this opens us to the sanctification that is the work of the Holy Spirit. And as we receive this grace, the practice of the other spiritual disciplines that are discussed in the book becomes a natural out flowing of the love of God in the believer.

And so it is; as the Lord said to St. Paul, "My grace is sufficient; my power is made perfect in weakness".

This book, which grapples with some of the central issues of the Christian walk, should be required reading for all believers.

      Book Description

God's power.how does it work within Christians? Can it truly bring people closer to their loving Father-truly help them grow and make them holy? "Growth in the Christian life and victory over sin are impossible," states Neil Anderson-unless believers understand what Scripture declares: They really are new people, reborn in the Spirit, whose deepest desires are now directed toward God. When Christians grasp this truth, it unleashes God's power within them: * They understand that "sin" is what they sometimes do-not who they are * They intimately experience God as their loving, accepting Father, not as a heavenly scorekeeper * Joy and contentment replace discouragement and cynicism Based on material from God's Power at Work in You.
