Thanks for the Discovery.......2007-01-23
Thanks so much to the Fortunes for writing such a helpful book - so clear and full of useful information. After reading and re-discovering my Gift, I am in awe of how easy it is to see His Gifts in others. Thank You!!!
Theologically accurate; Practically insightful; Fantastic for teaching; but Excessive in application.......2005-10-12
The best resource I've found for spiritual gift study so far.
The theological foundation is very sound, making good sense of the main passages on spiritual gifts in a way very few others do. Gifts are broken into 1) Manifestation (sign gifts - 1 Cor 12-14; Acts 2) 2) Ministry (equipping gifts - Eph 4) & 3) Motivational (every-Christian-gifts - Rom 12).
Written in a style anyone can use.
Inventories are great and surprisingly accurate for the limited number of questions used.
Warnings regarding misuse of spiritual gift impulses are very helpful (e.g. a "teaching" gift can incline a person to feel they are always right).
Application into the arena of employment is a bit excessive and beyond the scope of biblical applications for spiritual gifts. Better to do a Myers-Briggs or some other personality profile for that endeavor.
My choice for spiritual gifts work with churches.......2005-05-29
As a church consultant, I am often asked to recommend spiritual gift surveys and resources for churches. In fact, we routinely ask staff members to fill out gift surveys as part of the consulting process. This book--and the corresponding survey available separately--are the tools I have chosen to use in my work.
I realize, of course, that there is no such thing as a perfect spiritual gifts survey. Since Scripture does not give precise definitions to many of the gifts, and there is much disagreement about the nature of specific gifts, the best any gift survey can do is measure whether a person has abilities corresponding to the author's understanding of a particular gift.
The reason I have chosen this survey is because it distinguishes between what the authors call the manifestation gifts (1 Cor. 12), the ministry gifts (Eph. 4), and the motivational gifts (Romans 12). The Fortune's survey measures only the motivational gifts. (I feel the title of "ministry" gifts for the Ephesians 4 gifts is unfortunate since that passage says that those 5 gifts are given to equip all believers for ministry. I prefer to call them "equipping gifts.")
I have found using this survey to be very helpful in our consulting work, especially in assessing church staff needs. The idea is that each of us is motivated to minister mostly through one or more of these seven gifts, and which of these motivates us largely determines how we respond to a given need.
I find it interesting that when Pentecostal/charismatic churches take the Natural Church Development survey (a widely used survey to assess church health), the most common Minimum Factor (low score area) is gift-oriented ministry. However, having consulting with charismatic churches, that result did not surprise me. Why? Because the primary gift emphasis in those churches is on the manifestation gifts (1 Cor. 12), and few of the people in those churches were aware of motivational gifts or drew on that awareness to discern what shape their ministry should take. I say this not to discount the manifestation gifts, but to point out that for the purpose of determining ongoing ministry roles, the motivational gifts are far more useful. That is why I believe as a practical matter, a survey that measures the seven motivational gifts is most helpful.
Like any other authors of spiritual gift surveys, the Fortunes make assumptions in defining these gifts. While their assumptions seem to me to be reasonable, they still remain their opinions, not the teaching of Scripture, and so their gift definitions (just as anyone else's) need to be held lightly. When this tool is approached as giving us useful language for talking about and identifying motivational gifts, and not as "the right way" to talk about them, I have found it to be valuable.
Built on a flawed foundation.......2004-04-20
I applaud the Fortunes for doing a great job of encouraging people to discover and develop their spiritual gifts. Many of their tidbits and applications are very helpful and motivating. However, I have a problem with some of their foundational assumptions.
First, the idea that the "motivational" gifts of Romans 12 are of a different nature than the "manifestational" gifts of 1 Corinthians 12 is, in my opinion, not defensible. While Paul uses a variety of terms, the key word "charisma" is present in both passages. Also, the Fortune theory requires that the gift of "prophecy" in 1 Cor 12 be given a different definition than the gift of "prophecy" in Rom 12 even though the word is the same in both passages and there is no compelling contextual reason for two different definitions. Is it my personal suspicion, based on my study, that at the root of the "motivational vs manifestational" dichotomy is (in part) the desire to avoid dealing with the more "phenominal" gifts of 1 Cor 12 (tongues, miracles, etc.). Please note that I do not adhere to charismatic or pentecostal theology. However, I also don't find any Biblical warrent to exclude the 1 Cor 12 gifts from today's church.
Second, the practical result of this dichotomy is that the Fortunes must find a way for every believer to have not only a spiriutal gift, but specifically a Rom 12 gift ... significantly narrowing the field of variety of gifts.
Third, the Fortunes don't seem to distinguish clearly enough between spiritual gifts - gifts given by the Holy Spirit when He enters your life; and given specifically for the building up of the Church - and natural talents (God-given abilities that can be used in all facets of life). Yes, spiritual gifts and natural talents will often correspond closely, since ultimately they both come from our Creator God. However, the clear Biblical purpose of spiritual gifts is not to find a job you like, but to advance God's Kingdom. I admit that not all "God's work" happens within the walls and programs of the organized church, but to link spiritual gifts to finding a job is, in my opinion, weak theology.
There are some good nuggets in the Fortunes' book. Unfortunately, the flawed foundation points the reader in a less-than-ideal direction. A better basic perspective on spiritual gifts is C. Peter Wagner's little book "Discover Your Spiritual Gifts".
Every one needs to read this book-- pick it up now!.......2000-09-21
Don & Katie Fortune's book, "Discovering Your God-Given Gifts" is a tremendous asset in the library of every spiritual seeker, server and leader.
There are a lot of "gift" books out there and as a teacher, I probably have all of them in our library. This one is great because it presents a clear case for how different lists of gifts serve their unique purpose in corporate worship and life. It is easy to understand and share with others-- you'll want to go through it together in your Bible study group.
All of us wonder from time to time where we fit in when it comes to ministry gifts and service. The Fortunes have hit it on the head when it comes to helping us identify our motivational gifts.
This book is especially useful for ministry teams, small groups and any setting where a variety of people have to relate or serve together. The very first benefit of reading it, is the insight you'll gain to seeing how each of us in our gifts are needed to work together in balance.
Of course, the thing you will love about this are the surveys included that help you determine your primary and secondary motivational gifting. I also recommend that you order directly from the Fortunes several of the supplemental tests that can be used with children, secular audiences etc.
You'll love it. I give it my highest recommendation.
Book Description
Every believer receives a gifting from the Holy Spirit at the time of the new birth. But God also equips each believer throughout his or her life to use that gift in different ways for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ. Peter Wagner's small but powerful book provides clear teaching on what the gifts are, the difference between natural and spiritual gifts and how to find and use your spiritual gifts within the Body. The result is that you can become all God desires you to be when you find out how He designed the Body of Christ, how you fit in that Body and how you can use your gifts to bless others. The Church isn't whole unless you exercise your spiritual gifts within its midst!

An authentic, joyful life can be hard to find. Fortunately, Fran Harris has written the mapin 7 steps anyone can take. Successful, self-actualized and blissful: how many of us can say that about ourselves? Fran Harris sure can. She's a national television personality, WNBA Champion, international inspirational speaker, life coach and consultant to Fortune 500 companies. But ask her about her greatest accomplishment, and she's likely to smile and say, "That's easy: I found the REAL me." Because she believes we should all experience that journey, Fran's new book reveals her secrets for scrapping what we think we know about authenticity so that we can see and live up to our own potential. Her "7 Steps" are unconventionaland maybe controversialbut they work. Dr. Harris teaches that we'll only find our real selves by shedding all the layers of institutionalized belief, dogma and practice that we pile on in lifeeschewing ritualized adherence in favor of a deeper, more spiritual view of the world and ourselves. This, she contends, is what "God" wants for us. According to Harris, when we become unburdened by society's expectations, we are free to experience true joy, more capable of tapping into our own genius, and more likely to attract abundance and prosperity in all areas of our lives. A life of passion and purpose is everyone's birthright. Get yours!

Doesn't relate to Christian principles.......2007-04-18

Dr. Fran Harris feels her calling is to teach and coach her fans toward spiritual illumination, victory and happiness. Harris feels our challenge as spiritual beings is allowing ourselves to be guided by the one thing that is real: love. She offers seven steps to achieve that goal.
· "Retire your ego." "The ego is the part of the mind that houses self-awareness--not the kind of awareness that brings you closer to who you are--the kind of awareness that makes you self-conscious and self-absorbed." You don't need your ego but you do need your intuition. Intuition comes from God.
· "Embrace your spirit." Being spiritual is beyond the physical. Spirit is beyond infinite, it has no beginning nor ending. Embracing spirit means finding a way to shut out the world.
· "Accept your greatness." Greatness as defined by the author is about accepting that "God-ness--greatness--is in all of us."
· "Let go." We must learn to let go or not cling to our preconceived notions or the things we can't control.
· "Yearn for righteousness." Harris believes that to achieve righteousness we must "rid ourselves of all judgment, throw out all expectations, let go of our disappointments, stop being a victim, stop vilifying, keep your life free of clutter, and be childlike."
· "Place faith over fear. We don't have problems we have challenges."
· "Unleash your genius." "We all have a light--a genius--that we can "choose" to let shine, or we can hide."
· "It's up to you." This could be another day "or it could be your first step to standing up as the real you."
"Will the Real You Please Stand Up?" by Fran Harris, Ph.D., is a very positive book. Dr. Harris is an excellent writer. While she and I agree on most of her seven steps we do have some areas where we have essential differences. I believe that Christ died for our sins and rose again so that we might have eternal life. I also believe that the "way to the Father is through the Son." I believe that God is not only interested in every aspect of our lives, but he wants to guide and direct our lives if we allow Him to. Dr. Harris discusses submitting. I feel we must submit to the Christ Jesus, not to ourselves. It saddens me that Dr. Harris left out, or has turned away from, most of these fundamental beliefs. Dr. Harris tells you things you want to hear, not necessarily what you need to hear. However, her book is interesting and has delightful stories in it.
Real Inspitation for the Real YOU.......2007-03-14
Dr. Fran Harris has written a revealing book that blends her unique calling with sound spiritual practice. I have known Fran for a year and chatted with her as she wrote this inspiring book. She is the REAL DEAL. This book wraps up a complex issue and breaks it down to the fundamentals. Seven strategies will be all you need to live life with your purpose and passion without sacrifice. Fran knows that the REAL you deserves it all. Start putting these strategies to work in your own life, NOW.
Book Description
For the past few years America has seen the rapid growth of the dream circle phenomenon, as groups of all ages gather to discuss and interpret one another’s dreams in a collective effort to understand the universal energy of the cosmos and the creative human spirit. Connie Kaplan, dream guide and spiritual counselor, is a leader in this community, and her previous book,
The Woman’s Book of Dreams, has become one of its standard texts.
Kaplan’s new book,
Dreams Are Letters from the Soul, shows readers that when they sleep and dream, they are actually connecting with the creative force of the universe. In addition to viewing dreams as individual experiences of personal, psychological relevance, Kaplan argues that we need to develop an understanding that in dreaming we revisit our spiritual source. She encourages us to see our dreams as encoded messages from the soul, guiding our collective spiritual growth.
Through her own moving story and the dream journals of her students and of the women in her dream circles, Kaplan describes the various forms of dreams we experience: prophetic, telepathic, ceremonial, shamanic, psychological, healing, and spiritual, to name a few. She explains how we can consciously develop access to the unseen realms of creation, which will help us crack the code of our dreams and turn our life potential into a tangible form for positive change.
Dreams Are Letters from the Soul redefines the way we think about and relate to our dreams.

Spiritual Perspectives and Implications of Dreams.......2002-08-05
Connie Kaplan's most recent book is divinely inspired teachings on the deeper meanings and purposes of dreams. It goes so far above and beyond the normal personal symbolic or psychological analysis and into the spiritual realms. Our soul, through our dreams speaks to us, guides us, and helps us to remember who we really are and why we are here, both individually and collectively. Dreams model to us the shift from the egocentric level to that of a cohesive community working together for the greater good for all, which we then can manifest in our own waking reality. Quite profound!

Men Beware: This book is only for women.......2002-07-21
Connie Kaplan's book "Dreams Are Letters from the Soul : Discover the Connections Between Your Dreams and Your Spiritual Life" is a fluffy, one-sided view of the dream landscape. Connie Kaplan has an entertaining, engaging writing style that makes her book an easy, understandable read. She explains the different levels of dreams and provides good examples. Yet there is something lacking right from the start.
One realizes very on in this work that Connie is only writing about women and their dreams. Only at the very end of her book does she mention a man's dream, inadequately describing its significance.
Ms. Kaplan has obviously only worked with women for this book. What happened to the men and their perspective? Don't they dream too? I felt like I only got half of the story when I read this book. An analogy would be like talking about a day (24 hours) and leaving out the whole part about the sun shining. Sure the moon is beautiful and so are the stars, but what about the light and the sun.
There are many other books out there about dreams that tell more of the whole story.
Still Captivated..........2002-07-16
Connie Kaplan's book "Dreams Are Letters from the Soul : Discover the Connections Between Your Dreams and Your Spiritual Life" is amazing to read. She has a wonderfully positive and loving view of dreaming and the messages contained therein. I have read this book back to front and front to back and keep on getting more and more insight from it!! Connie's first book, "The Woman's Book of Dreams..." whet my appetite for this more detailed view of dreaming. "Dreams Are Letters from the Soul..." offered me life changing ideas and still captivates my mind long after the covers are closed.
My Soul thanks you, Connie.
Dreams are Letters from the Soul.......2002-06-26
This magical book will change the way you dream. I know that sounds like quite a claim, but it's true. Connie Kaplan's lyrical writing style draws you into the flow of dream time, radically enhancing your dreaming as a result. Kaplan is the ultimate dream guide, taking you on an unforgettable journey through 4 deepening levels of dreaming, revealing to you 13 different types of dreams that will help you understand who you are and why you are here.
This is a book you can read over and over, gaining more insight each time you read it. Keep it next to your bed on your nightstand and read a few paragraphs before you go to sleep. You'll be glad you did!
Powerful Dreams.......2002-05-22
Having read and enjoyed Connie Kaplan's first book,as well as having had the luxury of studying with her in an online dream circle 3 years ago, I was very much looking forward to 'Dreams Are Letters From the Soul". My life was forever changed by Connie's wise teachings, and deeply meaningful work. I had always been a dreamer-- my dreams often overwhelmed me, and I never felt satisfied by the information I read in standard psychological dream interpretations. I always felt there was a very spiritual element that I simply did not have the vocabulary to articulate, even to myself. Working with Connie's teachings changed all this however. I keep using the word 'teaching', simply because I cannot think of a better word to describe her powerful work. Certainly, there is nothing dogmatic or narrow about her conceptualization of what the dreamtime is all about. Whatever your spiritual path may be, I can attest to the inclusiveness and importance of this book.
I sat down with it and did not put it down until I had read it cover to cover. Surely I will refer back to it on many an occasion. I treasure it. For anyone, anyone who experiences the often confounding gift of a vivid dream-life-- this book is a must-have, must-read, must re-read. I'm not one to push books on other people, nor am I one to ever assume that what has worked for me will work for someone else. . .but there is just so much universal truth in this book-- it is such a wonderful starting point-- or even check-point-- on the spiral path of evolution and growth. Brava, Connie, this book is truly a masterpiece, and I cannot wait to read the next one!!! Thank you so much for offering this insight to the world-- it is much needed.
Again, brava!!
Book Description
The Enneagram -- a system based on nine personality types -- is a uniquely powerful approach to understanding why people behave the way they do. The 9 Ways of Working teaches how to recognize the personality types of everyone you work with -- colleagues, clients, consultants, and the boss -- and use that information to understand how those people manage, make decisions, resolve or create conflicts, and more.

A great help in understanding my business partners.......2005-12-12
I had studied the Enneagram for several years and knew it was useful in business, so I was pleased to see this book come out as the first I'd seen applying the Enneagram to the business environment. I was not disappointed in what it delivered. While the author has developed some unique Enneagram terminology (i.e. the "ally point") that I don't necessarily agree with, his understanding and descriptions of each Enneagram Type and how they manifests their unconscious agendas in the workplace, as well as how to respond to them in the most productive way, was excellent. For example, his description of what makes a Type 6 tick, and how to best work with a 6, so helped me in understanding better one of my own work colleagues, that single insight alone made the book worthwhile for me. I highly recommend this book, and I also recommend reading "Discovering Your Personality Type", by Don Riso and Russ Hudson, for a good introduction to Enneagram basics.
Oriented toward business world; excellent elsewhere, too.......2003-12-31
If you already have Goldberg's excellent "Getting Your Boss's Number" you probably don't need this volume. This volume however makes Goldberg's perceptive analysis and effective writing available in paperback (earlier title is out of print).
Goldberg's work is not quite as casual in style as Renee Baron's delightful works ("Enneagram Made Easy" and "Am I Your Type"), but it will appeal much more to the no-nonsense business world. His examples of people at different points on the Enneagram are drawn from his business experience and effectively highlight the types of challenges and opportunities that work presents differently to individuals, depending on their Enneagram dynamics.
I cannot imagine anyone not being fascinated and empowered by looking at themselves, their coworkers, and their family through Goldberg's careful presentation. He is respectful of all and does not approach Enneagram as a "pigeon-holing" or "typing" process. Rather it's an appreciation of strengths and challenges. From a background in psychology, I especially appreciate his discussion of the underlying dynamics and likely sources of how family experience helps us slide into certain Enneagram-number ways of operating.
So much more readable and better-organized that most of the "classics" in Enneagram. If you enjoy processing and sharing insights about how humans function, you may also want to explore Baron's titles. The latter are excellent for a casual chat around the family room - then those who like to really APPLY the principles to their work and life will want to move into Goldberg.
An excellent intro to the Enneagram.......2002-04-19
This book was my intro to the Enneagram and it is excellent.
It has very good descriptions of the 9 types and how to find out where you fit.
Its real distinguishing feature is a breakdown on how each group relates to the others in practical everyday situations. Like what to do if you work for a 7 or what if you are a 7.
I wasn't sure which type I was ( I'm a nine) and I read all the rest first. I kept trying to fit myself into a 7 or a 5 but, when I read the 9 chapter it sounded like he reached into my heart and pulled out the things no one else knows about me. I can still feel it today.
Then they go on with more, practical info and advise about what to do with your new found knowlege.
I've since read "Wisdom of the Enneagram" and "Personality Types." They are also very good but I wouldn't recommend them as your first Enneagram book.
One of the best Enneagram books in print........2001-09-06
Certainly this is one of the most practical, real-world approaches ever taken to the Enneagram. It's short on 'spiritual' hooey [which is strictly okay with me] and long on realistic application of the Enneagram to your professional and personal daily life. But that does not mean it is in any way shallow -- it is as specific, insightful and dead-on acurate as any book on the market. His descriptions of the types is thourough, well-organized and articulate. [BE AWARE, however, that it is largely a re-hash - if a superior re-hash -- of his earlier "Boss's Number."] If you are less interested in the new-agey, spiritual aspects of the Enneagram, and looking for a clear articulation of how the principles work in your dialy life, this might be the best of the bunch.
The ONLY enneagram book I use with business clients!.......2000-12-15
Goldberg's book is written in language that business people can quickly understand, and full of examples they can relate to. It's a superb presentation of the nine leadership styles--accessible and practical. I've used it very effectively in team sessions and in individual coaching ... My business clients especially gravitate to the "Cardinal Rules" at the end of each chapter (how to work with each type and how to work on yourself if it's your type).

Great Insight.......2007-03-21
I've found this book very helpful in determining my "gifts" as well as my seven year old son's "gifts." It describes him to a tee! It has been a wonderful tool especially in the area of schooling; it gives good insight into strengths and weaknesses, areas of interest, and why children may do certain things that don't always make sense to us as parents. It certainly gives me more patience when teaching my son as a homeschooler.
Gain understanding of your children.......2000-10-13
I found this book a practical and easy to use help in discovering my children's natural giftings and personality traits. It helps explain why their personality "quirks" are really evidences of their own God-given gifts. It helped me better understand them and accept them. I feel I can help guide them better as I understand them better. I can Cooperate with God in helping them live up to their potential, rather than my expectations.
get to know your children better.......2000-01-13
This book is a great resource for parents. I intend to give copies as baby gifts to new parents, it's just that helpful. With it you will begin to understand your child's strengths, their weaknesses, those "little things they do" that exasperate you. Sometimes, I've learned from this book, that annoying habit is a key to their bent, their greatest strength. It will help you direct their interests, know how to discipline them better, understand their friendships, and communicate with them better.
Great book for parent to learn about who their children are!.......1999-02-13
Better than their first effort, and easier to understand, this book explains some of the reason children behave the way they do and how to "train them up in the way *they* should go". Two little quibbles--spanking is not an effective method of *discipline* (discipline's root is disciple--you *don't* hit your students--at least I hope not) and their insistence on putting homosexuality and masturbation on a list of sexual sins. But those are things that can be ignored, and the rest of the book is very well done.

This book will capture your attention .......2005-10-18
I really enjoyed reading this book. It captured my attention right from the first couple pages. When I am looking for a good book to read I always walk into a book store and ask my spirit guides to help me find the right book. This is the book that I was lead to. I am starting a new chapter in my life after my relationship of 8 years ended just one year ago. To read this book made me realize a lot. I have a better understanding on spiritual contracts and the people that are in our lives and the roles that they play. I thank Kim for sharing so much insight on so many differnt topics as well as "homework" or shall I say "soulwork" that she provides for us. Read this book and I promise that you will have a lot of questions you have about your life answered.
Thanks Kim~
Refreshing.......2004-09-07
It may be because of where I'm at in my life as to why this book made a difference. It's given me the courage to face certain things in my life that I wasn't quite sure how to deal with. I firmly believe we are all equipped with an "inner voice" and that answers are always present; it's having the courage to follow through and confidence in ourselves (even when we fail). As far as my present career - I believe I've been stymied!! The true test will come in the near future; I too am making a career change and at 40, that's not an easy decision. For the first time in my life, I don't mind being a crash dummy - especially if it means finding happiness!! When I succeed, you can bet I'll be there to share!! Thanks Kim.

... But without consistency.
It's nice to read but I don't think is to take seriously.
Incredible!.......2004-03-11
Thank you Kim for writing Discover Your Spiritual Destiny. You assisted me in completely altering my career. I was in a job where I was paid well but absolutely hated. You gave me the strength, courage and ability to systematically plan a career change. Now, I am enjoying my new career and I have you to thank!
Thank you!

Discover Your Spiritual Destiny.......2001-09-16
Kim O'Neill advises us to "think of destiny in terms of a spiritual to-do list." She says we have some specific goals and objectives to accomplish during our stay on Earth, and that "the secret to creating inner peace and happiness is directly related to carrying out your spiritual destiny."
In her latest book, Discover Your Spiritual Destiny, O'Neill, a teacher, writer, motivational speaker, and channeler, explains how to discover your spiritual goals and accomplish your objectives.
She says that "no matter how fouled up, miserable, confusing, or dysfunctional your life is now, you have the ability to be happy." She defines happiness as the bliss that comes from knowing what you are meant to do and having the commitment to do it. O'Neill defines the guiding principles of spiritual destiny as life's work, issues to resolve, spiritual contracts, awareness of past lifetimes, and maintenance of the human body.
Life's work refers to what you are on earth to accomplish. O'Neill includes a list key indicators that will help you determine if you're on the right path.
"An issue is a learning or growing experience that helps an individual evolve emotionally and spiritually." Issues represent the struggles and problems that humans have to work though. They're meant to be learning experiences and they include such emotions as loneliness, rejection, grief, and fear.
Spiritual contracts refers to our relationships with others. O'Neill believes that we all make agreements with others, before we are born, "to interact with each other during an upcoming earthly lifetime." These agreements are generally made to help each other achieve spiritual growth in a particular area.
Being aware of past lives means recognizing that we've already achieved certain amounts of spiritual growth. This awareness contributes to our self-esteem and ability to cope with our current life, because we know we've reached our goals in the past.
Caring for our physical bodies is important because they help support the soul while on earth. "If your body's well-being is compromised, it could impede or completely derail your spiritual forward movement."
O'Neill has packed Discover Your Spiritual Destiny full of exercises and techniques that will help readers learn the purpose of their life on earth and find peace and happiness.
