Book Description

This remarkable biography traces the life and times of Joshua L. Chamberlain, the professor-turned-soldier who led the Twentieth Maine Regiment to glory at Gettysburg, earned a battlefield promotion to brigadier general from Ulysses S. Grant at Petersburg, and was wounded six times during the course of the Civil War. Chosen to accept the formal Confederate surrender at Appomattox, Chamberlain endeared himself to succeeding generations with his unforgettable salutation of Robert E. Lee's vanquished army. After the war, he went on to serve four terms as governor of his home state of Maine and later became president of Bowdoin College. He wrote prolifically about the war, including The Passing of the Armies, a classic account of the final campaign of the Army of the Potomac.

5 out of 5 stars A true American Hero.......2006-03-29

In the Hands of Providence is a very well researched look of the life of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Alice Turlock presents a definitive biography of this modest professor from Bowden College, who met challenge after challenge to become one of the greatest leaders in Civil War history. Chamberlain had extraordinary observational and superb writing skills. His persistence at recording the historic events, which included his emotional reactions, gave Trulock's wonderful historic accounts for her book.
The book starts by giving us an in depth look at his obscure Christian upbringing in rural Maine, and follows his processes of becoming a great young man. He was an exceptional college student, receiving the praise of his instructors. He was also highly regarded by his neighbors and towns' folk alike. Many considered him to have the highest moral and ethical standard. He was so trusted and respected as a young man in his home town that an older business man of Maine, who was an acquaintance of Chamberlain's, entrusted him with the dealings of his estate.

While finishing his studies at Bowden, Chamberlain married his sweetheart Frances Caroline Adams. They had a very close and loving relationship. But during the war, the constant distance between them put a great deal of strain on their relationship. After graduation, he accepted a position as a professor at Bowden, and held that position for several years. Chamberlain maintained a very close relationship with his family, and he was especially close to his father in law George Adams.

When the war broke out in 1861, Chamberlain ask for a leave of absence from Bowden to enlist, but was turned down. Not to be left out of the war, he again applied for a sabbatical to study in Europe, and this time it was granted. He had no intentions on going to Europe, and instead immediately enlisted in the army as a lieutenant colonel, and never looked back. He played a huge role in the recruitment of the men for a regiment, which would later come to be known as the 20th Maine.

With no military experience, Chamberlain showed great promise in his leadership shills and military expertise. He became friends with his unit's commander, Colonial Ames, who became his tutor. According to Trulock, Chamberlain held a great deal of respect and admiration for Ames, and he gave Ames credit for his military success.

Trulock's description of Chamberlain's military life is extraordinary, and she supplies us with great details about the battles in which he was involved. At the battle of Antietam, Chamberlain was not directly involved in the fighting but was brought up in reserve the next day. Trulock gives a very vivid description of horror that Chamberlain witnessed upon arriving at the battlefield that day where 22,000 lay dead or wounded on the field. It was the bloodiest, one day battle in the Civil War.

Next, she transports us to the Fredericksburg, and the final assault by the North on Marye's Heights - the charge that involved the 20th of Maine. All the other divisions that day were either driven back, laid dead or wounded on the field. She describes tremendous courage that Chamberlain and his men showed as they made their charge on the now famous wall at Marye's Heights, the wall that was heavily guarded by Confederates. The division suffered great loses that late afternoon. They remained among the dead or wounded for 2 days and nights before the order was given to retreat.

The episode in history that Chamberlain is most remember for is the courage and heroism he displayed at the battle of Gettysburg. He was ordered to the top of a hill known as The Little Round Top where he was placed at the far left flank. There, Chamberlain was instructed to hold that position at all cost. The 20th Maine repelled assault after assault by the Confederates that day. When ammunition ran out, Chamberlain ordered a bayonet charge, an event that many historians say was the turning point of the Civil War.

Trulock also gives a very detailed account of the battle of Petersburg, where Chamberlain was horribly wounded. After hearing of his heroic actions during the battle, General Grant immediately promoted Chamberlain on the battlefield to Brigadier General. This was the only battlefield promotion ever issued by Grant. Somehow, Chamberlain survived his wound, due to the skilled surgery that was preformed on him that night and next day. Chamberlain's two close friends, Dr. Shaw and Dr. Townsend worked for hours repairing the damage inflicted by the mini ball. The wound he received that day would trouble him all of his life and required numerous surgery's to repair the damage.

His persistent heroism and outstanding leadership were the deciding factor when Grant chose Chamberlain to receive the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. He showed great respect for his fellow countrymen that day when he gave the order to his men to give a solders salute to the surrendering confederate men. His honorary actions that day were later critized by many people.

This book contains a lot of historic photos of Chamberlain's family, friends, fellow soldiers and numerous battle maps. The book also gives a great account of Chamberlain's life as Governor of Maine and President of Bowden College, but these accounts do not compare to the bravery and patriotic devotion that Chamberlain displayed during the Civil War. His actions made him a hero to his men, and the country he served.

Trulock has given us a great biography, not only one of the Civil War's greatest commanders, but one of the United States most distinguished citizens. The book flows very smoothly while covering details of battles that would interest even the most die hard Civil War enthusiast.

Finally, a book that does justice to an astonishing person. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Man of character, man of faith whose story should be proclaimed!.......2006-01-25

Chamerlain's heroism is similar to Teddy Roosevelt, Alvin York, and Audie Murphy who came behind him, but have been better publicized.

The difference is that his act of confidence, courage and decisiveness may have been the one that changed the outcome of the Civil War, the 1864 election and the future of America.

In The Hands of Providence is the story of Chamberlain's exemplary character before, during and after that momentum changing moment. All Americans should read and learn this story.

4 out of 5 stars Well rounded biography.......2005-05-10

I found Alice Trulock's biography on Joshua L. Chamberlain to be quite readable, well researched and well grounded. Considering the length of the book, Trulock's book read quite well for most readers of any level. Well, it may not be good as the one written by John Pullen but it definitely is superior to the one written by Edward Longacre. I put that in just for comparison purpose.

I think this biography may served as a good introduction to Chamberlain who's name have definitely reached near mythological level nowadays among Civil War readers thanks to Jeff Daniels and his role in that movie "Gettysburg". Of course, most readers would probably be disappointed that Jeff Daniel's portaryal of Chamberlain will not jive with Joshua Chamberlain of Trulock's book.

The biography covers all aspects of Chamberlain's life. The book does a good job covering Chamberlain's military career which proves to be the most important period of his life from which Chamberlain's life will be centered around until his death. I do wish to make a point here. He died at the age of 86, a very ripe old age and I doubt if his wounds he got from Petersburg really hasten his death, it may have cause him a lot of pain but even in modern days, most people don't live that long!

Overall, an very good biography on one of Union's more natural soldiers. A non-professional who performed better then most professional soldiers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Title of an Excellent Leader.......2005-03-13

The Duke of Wellington supposedly stated that it is impossible for a Christian to serve in the military. Too bad he wasn't around during the American Civil War! Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson from the South and Joshua Chamberlain and Otis Howard from the North are notable exceptions to Wellington's thesis.

Trulock has written what is the best account of the hero of Little Round Top and who personally oversaw the surrender of Confederate troops at Appamattox.

Among the important events in Chamberlain's life covered include:

1. Birth and Christian upbringing in rural Maine.
2. His days as a student and adminstrator at Bowdoin College.
3. His early Civil War service including the formation of the famous 20th Maine Regiment.
4. Fascinating accounts of his involvement in major Civil War battles: Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and other engagements.
5. The horrible wound suffered at Petersburg that eventually killed him some 50 years later.
6. His loving yet strained marriage to Frances Caroline Adams.
7. Postwar public service as President of Bowdoin College and Governor of Maine.

Reading the book was a joy - the narrative flowed smoothly while covering several details of a fascinating character. The author managed to keep the story from becoming too bogged down in dry detail without insulting the reader's intelligence. Oh, how I wish more biographies were written like this!

The book also contains excellent battle maps and numerous photographs of the main characters: Chamberlain, his wife, parents, sister and brothers, many Civil War officers, and other important people in Joshua Chamberlain's life.

All in all, an excellent and highly recommended read. Read and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Well Researched Look at a Major Civil War Figure.......2004-10-02

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was the epitome of the American citizen-soldier. Since the birth of the republic, American soldiers have left home and hearth to serve the nation and many of them have come home physically shattered and haunted by what they have seen while still others have not come home at all. Thrown into the breech, some of the citizen solders found they did not have the fortitude for what was asked of them while many others have excelled, performing better than graduates of West Point or Annapolis, America's most prestigious military academies. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a citizen soldier who became a great hero of the Civil War, a man who met challenge after challenge and became a great leader of men and afterward, the course of his life was forever altered. An academically inclined young man, Chamberlain left Bowdin College and his studies and teaching in theology to accept a lieutenant colonel's commission in the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The modest young professor took part in most of the important battles of the North's Army of the Potomac. He was a participant in the Battle of Antietam, still the bloodiest single day in American history. Today, we can walk the battlefield off Sharpsburg Pike, in rural Maryland and see "Burnside's Bridge and the cornfields where so many men fell and get some small measure of what men like Chamberlain went through. We can also visit the battlefield at Fredericksburg and see the heights that he and his 20th Maine and the Union Army tried to take in bloody frontal assaults into the teeth of Confederate guns and under the pounding of their artillery on the hills. Today Chamberlain's comrades - as well as the fallen Confederate troops - are buried on the commanding heights they failed to take, one of the Civil War's bitter ironies. Colonel Chamberlain then immortalized himself at Gettysburg's Little Round Top where he anchored the Union left, repelling assault after assault and winning the day by leading a charge down the slope that broke the Rebel troops. He was given a general's star by General Grant at Petersburg and was honored to receive the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. His heroism and leadership qualities helped him win the Governorship of Maine no less than four times, after which he retired to the Presidency of Bowdin College, his alma mater. Alice Trulock who wrote this book, was not a professional writer and after her retirement from civic affairs, this book took her ten years of careful research, writing and rewriting to complete. She based her work on a great deal of new research and handles the account of infantry combat beautifully. Unfortunately, Trulock died before the book was released and so she wasn't able to accept the accolades that were due to her for such a well-written and moving biography of an emblematic Civil War figure.

Book Description

Public opinion polls, Ronald Reagan is the most popular of modern presidents, and yet to most biographers the man is still an enigma. This is because, as Brown explains, few have ever focused on this great man's faith. This book explores the life and personality of Ronald Reagan by focusing on his deep-felt Christian beliefs and showing how faith guided him along his distinguished career and led him to his unprecedented success. With the support of Ronald Reagan's own words and writings and firsthand interviews with Ronald Reagan's family, friends, and co-workers, Brown weaves a magnificent story of Reagan's strong devotion to God that will not only inspire Christians to enter public service and allow their faith to motivate all their actions but also help point others to the Cross of Jesus Christ-a cause that was near and dear to President Reagan's heart.

4 out of 5 stars Sheds light on the spiritual life of President Reagan.......2007-09-01

A hagiographic biography of the spiritual life of Ronald Reagan written by a close friend of Reagan's son, Michael. While this book is from time to time excessively sectarian (evangelical, conservative Christian) and borders on preachy, it does provide helpful insight into the spiritual beliefs and hopes of President Reagan and their foundational (fundamental) role in shaping his private and public lives.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read on President Reagan's Faith In Jesus Christ.......2007-04-20

In my humble opinion, Mary Beth Brown has written a very readable account of the role of faith in Jesus Christ in President Ronald Reagan's long life. I have heard some things of President Reagan's faith but had never read anything intensive on the subject until this book.

The title is not a political treatise of conservatism but rather the faith of a truly humble president. Politics are covered mainly in the context of Reagan's faith and why he believed and acted as he did.

The book covers the following periods of Reagan's life:

1. Early childhood and great love for his mother and respect for his father despite his father's struggle with the bottle and making a living.
2. College years at Eureka College and early broadcasting days.
3. Years in Hollywood and his role as president of the Screen Actor's Guild and how he became acquainted with the influence of communism.
4. Failed marriage to Jane Wyman.
5. Second and extremely successful marriage to Nancy Davis.
6. Raising his children.
7. His various ranches and he thoroughly enjoyed being there.
8. Role faith played in combatting communism and how he worked closely with Pope John Paul in the 1980s to bring about communism's demise in Europe.
9. His years as governor of California.
10. Years as president of the United States.
11. Post-president years.

Apparently the book was written just before his death and perhaps would have included more information on his faith.

If you are not a Reagan fan or are a political junkie, then this book is not for you. If you like to read on the role of faith in famous people, then this book is for you.

Highly recommended. Read and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Glimpse into History.......2005-02-21

We had a copy of Mary Beth Brown's book sitting on the coffee table when a cousin - who holds a master's degree in history - came for a visit. He took the book down to the guest room and spent all night reading it. I think this earns Hand of Providence the accolade of being a "page turner." It is also a spiritual experience and a most revelatory glimpse into the soul of a man who changed the world forever. Even the jaded will be moved. The cousin began to pray for the first time in decades.

4 out of 5 stars Some new info, but largely other scholars.......2004-12-22

The "Hand of Providence" is a pretty good read, just know that Mary Beth Brown brings little new research or insight to Ronald Reagan. This collection is largely the work of other Reagan biographers. If you are looking for a biography that deals with the political side of Reagan go to Lou Cannon and Peggy Noonan for character & faith. Mary Beth Brown does add some new info with her discussions with Michael Reagan. I understood a little bit more about President Reagan and Jane Wyman's divorce.

In terms of Reagan himself there is no doubt that faith deeply influenced his presidency and strategy during the Cold War, he says as much in his autobiography. Look, Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century. He destroyed communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Reagan is really a throw back in terms of his values, he symbolizes Americana, westward expansion, eternal optimism, faith in God and values.

Brown's contribution with her book is that she recognizes the importance of Reagan's appeal in terms of faith with the "Reagan Democrats," her premise is that they were more attracted to his spiritual and faith politics than his economic ideas. This is no doubt very true, but they still work together for the kind of vast coalitions Reagan built. Another contribution by Brown, although not completely new was that Reagan knew how to win the votes of evangelical protestants and Roman Catholics at the same time. She was good to point that note out. She has some new information on Nelle Reagan as well. Overall this is a little simplified but largely accurate account of President Reagan and his faith. It's an interesting and very quick read, you could read it an afternoon. I wish she would have expanded her thoughts and had notes. I am glad Reagan's faith is getting more play in terms of publishing. It was so obvious with the language he used during the Cold War that there were obvious and overt spiritual overtones at work within the entire administration and their rhetoric.

Overall if you are just getting started in this area, this is a good place to start. After that check out the original sources.

5 out of 5 stars Hand of Providence is a Great Read.......2004-07-24

Hand of Providence is an awesome book, and when I opened and read the Forward by Michael Reagan, I couldn't put the book down.

I was an admirer of President Reagan before, but this book shows how he was used by God throughout his life. Now I understand how extraordinary a man he really was. I learned thing I never knew about him before.

The book is not about policy, and it isn't about government, it is about how one man faces the diffuculties of life and overcomes them with the power of prayer and reliance on his Savior, Jesus Christ.

I could see this book upsetting many secular humanists that also admire President Reagan.

In the final analysis, this book strengthened my own faith, as I learned how President Reagan overcame many trials. Read it and be inspired on nearly every page.

Book Description

Do all things work together for good? In this thought-provoking book, acclaimed theologian R.C. Sproul explains the difficult concept of God's providence, illustrating through both scripture and story how God guides our universe.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Brief On God's Attribute.......2007-09-26

Sproul here brings the doctrine of providence and God's sovereignty to bear.

This book, and its provocative title, is intended to be stock-piled in the 'popular choice' shelves in Christian bookstores. And precisely therein it may achieve its greatest good, for it is done at such a level that it could really convince the 'doubters' - and not repel them, as Sproul does not drink to deeply from the spring.

The book is, to those who already espouse these same views, a very delightful read. At times Sproul again veers off into psychology, which is its only drawback.

A good book to give to those whom one thinks are uncertain of God and His attributes that make him omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. As a cessationist and reformed scholar, Sproul has the emphasis on the correct
procedural exegesis.

A valuable and recommendable book.

4 out of 5 stars Deep Theology on a Popular Level .......2005-10-28

R. C. Sproul has a real knack for writing deep books on a popular level and he does well with The Invisible Hand, which focuses on the doctrine of God's providence. Sproul's book is part philosophy, part exposition, and part historical theology. Difficult concepts such as theodicy and concurrence are handled as well as questions about the intersection of God's providence in human history, government, and our personal lives. God's provision for his people, the role of prayer, and the question of miracles are all covered as well. A great benefit of the book is its expositional nature. Sproul frequently develops his theology from familiar biblical stories (Abraham and Isaac, David and Bathsheba, Joseph in Egypt, Daniel and Belshazzar, etc.) - which is a great boon for young believers who may not be overly familiar with Scripture. A lot of territory is covered in this book. Sproul also defines his terms well, giving simple (although occasionally simplistic) and easy to grasp definitions to words like providence, theodicy, et cetera. Sprinkled throughout are personal stories and interesting anecdotes that keep the book interesting and even humorous. One possible demerit is Sproul's propensity to throw out Latin phrases. He does define them all, but they seem unnecessary. I also thought his chapters on miracles were overly reductionistic (he is a strong cessationist). But overall, this is a good book on providence and worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Picture of God's Providence.......2005-07-31

Dr. Sproul has written a wonderful book about the absoult sovereignty of God. Like a breath of fresh air, Sproul shows us from Scripture the awesome power of God to accomplish His purposes in the earth. Sproul uses various texts from both the Old and New Testament to reveal the biblical picture of a God who is in control of all things even when it doesn't seem that He is.

I greatly enjoyed how Sproul stayed true to the Bible as his authority. While he does quote from other authors and from the Westminister Confession of Faith, Sproul does not get bogged down in the heated debate between the Calvinist and Arminian over God's sovereignty. He simply shows from Scripture that God is in control. No-one can argue with that.

In the end, I greatly enjoyed this book. While it read like a devotional, the book lifted my faith in the absolute power of God. Romans 8:28 hasn't been more precious since I finished this book. You too will enjoy this book as you study the Scriptures concerning the hand of God's providence in all things. You will pray to your Father knowing that He is sovereign (Matthew 6:8).

5 out of 5 stars Providence Explained.......2002-09-11

This is one of the best books I have read on God's providence. With rich Scriptural references and stories, the author shows the extent of God's involvement with His creation.

5 out of 5 stars The fingerprints of God.......2001-03-05

I've been wanting to review this book for some time now, but my review won't do it justice. Not since I read one of Sproul's earlier books, The Holiness of God, has a book simultaneously shaken my soul and comforted it with the presence of God in this way. This one follows the tradition. Renown for his thought-provoking teachings, Sproul takes the doctrines of God's immanence and providence down from the ivory tower and underscores them in the lives of the biblical characters as well as his own. This is theology at it's finest...truth for living.

Sproul's purpose in writing this book is "to look at the question of providence, not only from a doctrinal viewpoint, but chiefly from an examination of concrete experiences of the flesh-and-blood people whose lives and struggles are recorded for us in sacred Scripture" (2). And this he does par excellence. You can almost feel Abraham's stomach churn as he ponders the immanent sacrifice of his beloved son Isaac, while splitting firewood for the altar early in the morning. You can almost hear the waves of the Nile lapping against the basket of bulrushes which contained the future leader of God's chosen people from slavery to the promised land. You can almost see Joseph's bloodied, mangled, technicolor coat as he wept in the presence of his brothers, compassionately telling them, "you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive" (Gen. 50:20). Our God is not "out there". . . He is right here.

Some of the areas of God's providence that this book touches on deal with God's involvement with His creation through miracles, the display of His glory, evil in the world, prayer, the flow of history and the history of redemption. At least one chapter is devoted to each of these topics which are very broad topics in and of themselves, but Sproul briefly touches on the involvement of God in each one of them displaying His love and purpose for His creation.

Sproul says that providence "is not merely that God looks at human affairs. The point is that He looks after human affairs. He not only watches us, He watches over us" (17). As far as the biblical teaching that all things that work together for good to those who love God is concerned, Sproul makes a clear distinction between the proximate, or soon occurring, and the ultimate. For example, we may experience things in our lives that are supremely good. These things are proximately and ultimately good. But we may also experience things that aren't good at all, but are for our good. Just like veggies to a kid, these things are proximately bad yet ultimately good. Sproul says that when Paul tells us that all things work together for good to those who love God, that he does not say that all things that happen are good things. What Paul is saying is that all things that happen to us, good and bad, are working together for our good. Ultimately it is good that these things happen to us (171).

One of the reasons why I love this book is because Sproul is such a ponderous writer and he writes with the views of history on the tip of his pen. He asks the hard questions and he's lets you search for the answers along with him. Sometimes the answers lead to more questions but never before learning something valuable about the providence and ways of Almighty God. If you've ever charged to the throne of God with the question, "Why?!", read this book. You'll gain invaluable insight into the purposes of God which will give you and incredible thirst for the "Unmoved Mover", as Aristotle called God. This book will bring you to your knees in tears at the feet of your creator God in awe as you realize his involvement in every detail of your life with the goals to make His desires yours and to change you into the likeness of His Son. Afterward, you'll be able to stand higher and firmer in the confidence that He is the sovereign Captain of your soul and the loving Master of your fate. I read this book at a time in my life that I would label "tragic" and it pointed me to the providential grace of God in a way that truly restored my soul to trust in my God. Sometimes He calms the storm . . . sometimes He calms the child.

In 1777, aiming to crush the American rebellion and win for himself a lasting fame, British General John Burgoyne sets out from Canada with a massive army. Losing the help of his Indian allies and slowed by the nearly impassable terrain, the flamboyant Burgoyne finds himself locked in the battle of his life at a place called Saratoga. There, under the heroic leadership of General Benedict Arnold, the rustic American force claims an unlikely victory, and a turning point is reached in the American Revolution. Filled with heart-pounding action and true stories of intrigue, bravery, and patriotism, Volume 4 of Prelude to Glory captures the high adventure of America's quest for independence, a struggle that would have surely failed except for the hand of Providence.

        Book Description

Kate Monroe is a young university student who finds herself in a dangerous quest along with four other team members. They have been chosen to assist an Italian archeologist for the summer in a global search for seven ancient tablet pieces. Kate meets a fellow team member who is arrogant and worldly. She has her values challenged and must face her fear in ways she feels ill equipped. Together, the G team faces fear, treachery, betrayal, and triumph over tragedy. Time is against them as others are interested in the tablets for the monetary and mythical value that the tablets may hold. True love is found and so much more when the ancient message itself is revealed.
