I can not get enough of Burton Silverman and this book was just what I needed.
I just flip open a page and study how he pulls it off, great painting that is.
I have not read the whole book, just little bits here and there.
But I sure have looked at all the pretty pictures and so should any one who likes B. Silvermans work.

    5 out of 5 stars One man's journey.......2003-07-13

Most people who would buy this book are already familiar with Burton Silverman's paintings. The book is no disappointment; the reproductions are large and sensitive to color nuances, on heavy paper, and there are a lot of them. There are short essays by Silverman about each painting which show an honest, contemplative mind at work. It's not a how-to book; there's no pedantic bloviating, just a humble, intelligent man describing the circumstances behind each picture. At first I pegged Silverman as one of those East Coast types who paint their Greenwich Village friends sitting still with expressionless faces and vacant stares. It all seemed too academic, lacking action and vigor, like most modern art. But his understanding of color and composition is undeniable, and the personalities he depicts grow on you. They are of the type of person who can be found in artist's lofts, in front of Folger's coffee cans full of paintbrushes, wearing sweaters and spectacles, New York academics and intellectuals who go to poetry readings, listen to Public Radio, and fret about the fate of the Rosenbergs. He's a world traveller, so he has other types of people, too, but he seems to know all of them personally, and doesn't just paint anonymous models. Though his work is a little tame compared to the kind of entertainment industry stuff I'm interested in, commercial illustrators could learn a lot from Silverman's penetrating eye and calm, balanced judgement.

5 out of 5 stars The least helpful (No. 2) review from me........2001-08-04

Just a few lines (as I chose to write below) to be an 'unhelpful' review.

My fingers wiggle when seeing the drawings. My nerve cells tingle trying to process/digest/analyze color combinations in the paintings, and half of me trying to get off the chair and get to the easel to "mix 'em colors".

Some body, catch me! I am falling... in love.

4 out of 5 stars Masterful Artist and Brilliant Works...........2001-06-20

You will have to admire the works of Burt Silverman presented in this well designed compilation of his work. I have followed his work for years and he's just one of those magical craftsmen that makes me just shake my head in wonder when I see what he can do with a paint brush. He is certainly one of the best artist of our age. If you love art in the realist format, you will be well pleased with this book and with Mr. Silverman's work. This one is a "keeper".

    5 out of 5 stars "Sight & Insight" by B. Silverman.......2000-05-02

This is the story of a man's quest for truth in art in spite of a country's infatuation with its new found Modern Art. I found the book to be BEAUTIFUL, COMPELLING, ILLUMINATING, and INSPIRING...filled with IMAGES OF the LOVE that Mr Silverman has for his subjects, his kind & curious Humanist "take" on the World, and his incredible volume of awe inspiring work. He has crossed the barriers of "illustration" showing us that Art is Art when "spoken" by the true voice.

Have been using "From Sight to Insight" since 1981. It has been the resource for insights and rhetorical designs that have garnered awards and flattering comments on my writing. The author's informal conversational tone makes it simple to access and implement his tips and techniques. If there is one book that has inspired, enlightened and driven the successes of my career in advertising, publishing, and critical essay and research report writing in academia, it has been this one. Glad to find it still in print. Am recommending it to a friend today. I wouldn't give it up for anything. When I look through it, all the interviews, articles and awards flood back to me in a wash of fond memories. Today I'm using it as a fast reference for insights on a research paper design. Buy it, read the chapters in order or at random, on demand. You'll discover fresh insights. Wow your friends and colleagues.

I initially purchased this map a few years ago on my first visit to D.C. Travelling alone,I didn't want to call attention to myself by looking like an obvious tourist w/ books & maps. This map allows you to easily maneuver through the city, on foot & using the metro. The view of the city & the metro guide is indispensible. The small investment for this map will provide you with the greatest returns of exploring & enjoying our nation's capitol as if it was your hometown. I wore out the first map after a few visits & loaning it to friends. I purchased this replacement because I wouldn't dream of visiting D.C. without my favorite 'travel guide & companion'.

5 out of 5 stars A rich and insightful book.......2006-01-18

On Sight and Insight is a wholly remarkable and wondrous book that should be read by anyone with an interest in blindness, perception, embodiment and human existence. In this book John Hull documents his journey from the world of sight into the world of blindness, by describing what it is like to make this transition, through detailed and revealing descriptions of his daily activities, and by giving us his dreams, thoughts and reflections. His journey, in fact, is from a world of sight into one of insight, for it is not only a story of a courageous and emotionally complex life-transformation, but a profound study of who we are, how we see or do not see, touch or do not touch, how we relate to our world-and most of all an insightful study of what it means to be with one another. Anyone who reads this book will not quite hear a voice or touch or see a face in the same way again.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for anyone facing blindness.......1999-02-05

A book review, by Carlton Griffin:

"On Sight & Insight, a Journey into the world of Blindness", by John Hull

After losing much of my vision over the past four years due to Retinitis Pigmentosa, I went looking for more information about going blind.

I recently finished this book and I've had a few days to reflect upon it. The book is written by John Hull, who tells about going blind as an adult. As a young man, John has blinding cataracts. He was blind for quite some time in the hospital, long enough to teach himself braille and read several chapters in the Bible.

The corrective surgery for the cataracts detached both of his retinas, one of which they were able to correct. He was blind in his left eye for the rest of his life, but his right eye stayed pretty dependable until he was about 45, and over the following three years he went completely blind.

It's a new book, John went blind in the 1980's and his book reads like a diary or journal. It's very easy to read and John easily holds the reader's attention.

John mostly tells what it is like, emotionally, to go blind. He talks about all aspects of blindness, but the focus on the book is to share how it affected and affects his emotions and his spirit; his soul. John really shares of himself in this book, it's very frank and in some places painful.

However, I enjoyed having read the book because it provided me with some information I was lacking, helped me come to terms with some things that before I could not conceive. I've been worried so much, the nagging question is always "What will it be like to go blind, how will I live my life?".

While John's book certainly doesn't fully answer that question, it does allow the reader to gain much insight into what it is like, at least from one man's perspective. While it did confirm a few fears I have, at least I feel more informed now; certainly the unknown is still more frightening than my actual fate.

I wish I could say more about this book, I think Mr Hull did a fine job. I refer to him as John in this review because I feel so close to him and his family, having read the book. If you want to know what it's like for an adult to go blind, John's perspective is wonderfully told in this book.

Having worn eyeglasses for most of his life, Henry Grunwald merely thought a new prescription was in order when he tried to pour himself some water one day and completely missed the glass. A visit to the eye doctor revealed much more: Grunwald was in the early stages of macular degeneration, an incurable condition that causes increasingly blurred vision and near blindness. His condition was first diagnosed in 1992; he can now discern only fuzzy shapes and colors, while reading has become the "visual equivalent of struggling for breath." To a man who has devoted his life to the written word, the inability to read and write on his own was particularly difficult to accept. With time and effort, however, acceptance did arrive, and Twilight: Losing Sight, Gaining Insight is an elegant memoir of the lessons learned from his debilitating illness.

A former editor in chief of Time, Inc., author of One Man's America, and once the U.S. ambassador to his native Austria, Grunwald first confronted his illness like the first-rate journalist he is. He gathered information, read widely, and questioned the experts, amassing an eclectic blend of fascinating tidbits regarding the history of the eye, as well as discussions on art, culture, and mythology. He meanders from light-sensitive primitive organisms to the latest surgical wizardry to ancient Egyptian remedies for eye maladies (the innards of yellow frogs and the milk of women who had borne only boys apparently worked wonders). He also discovers that Henry James, James Thurber, and Jorge Luis Borges all suffered from a similar loss of sight, as did Michelangelo and Monet. There must be some comfort in knowing one is in good company.

In learning more about the ailment, he ultimately learns more about himself, and it is this introspection that gives this book its subtle beauty. He learns to pay more attention to ordinary objects--the gleam of brass fixtures, the sleek contour of tools, the elegance of machines--as well as to gaze anew at the familiar faces of friends and family. He even uses his blurred vision as a way to interpret beloved paintings differently. Looking backward, he restructures visual memories into a "kaleidoscope of the past" that is beyond the whims of his failing eyes. Though he candidly discusses his fears, anger, and depression, with particular attention paid to his lost independence and reliance on others, his attitude on the whole is admirable. And he manages to retain a sense of humor. In one passage he recalls how he once extended a handshake to what he believed to be the maitre d' at a restaurant, only to be told that he had greeted a large statue of a monkey instead.

Grunwald's absorbing memoir is an eloquent reminder that the eyes are not the only instruments with which to discern beauty. In many respects, his loss of sight served only to sharpen his vision. --Shawn Carkonen

        Book Description

In 1992, when Henry Grunwald missed a glass into which he was pouring water, he assumed that he needed new eyeglasses, not that the incident was a harbinger of darker times. But in fact Grunwald was entering the early stages of macular degeneration -- a gradual loss of sight that affects almost 15 million Americans yet remains poorly understood and is, so far, incurable. Now, in Twilight, Grunwald chronicles his experience of disability: the clouding of his sight, and the daily struggle to overcome its physical and psychological implications; the discovery of what medicine can and cannot do to restore sight; his compulsion to understand how the eye works, its evolution, and its symbolic meaning in culture and art.

Grunwald gives us an autobiography of the eye -- his visual awakening as a child and young man, and again as an older man who, facing the loss of sight, feels a growing wonder at the most ordinary acts of seeing. This is a story not merely about seeing but about living; not merely about losing sight but about gaining insight. It is a remarkable meditation.

1 out of 5 stars Why not on CD?.......2005-03-03

This is not a review per se in that I have not read the book. However, I wanted to buy it on CD for my father-in-law, who is 89 years old and HAS macular degeneration. As a result, he is now unable to read at all. It is peculiar to me that this particular book is not available on CD since many in its target audience would likely be victims of the degenerative eye disease that is its topic. Are there plans to put it in an audio format?

4 out of 5 stars CALLING ALL MACULAR DEGENERATES..........2004-06-21

Written by a retired Editor-in-Chief of Time, Inc. publications, this slender tome gives the author's musings on macular degeneration, which is an incurable, age-related, gradual loss of vision that affects millions of Americans. It is a loss that the author himself experienced, though initially, having worn eyeglasses all his life, he simply thought that he needed a prescription for stronger lenses.

The author gives the reader a historical perspective of age related macular degeneration and the state of this disease in the medical world today. He also recounts his early struggle with the permanent loss of vision and his somewhat difficult transition to the world of the blind and partially blind, given the fact that his life had always revolved around the written word and voracious reading.

This is a very personal chronicle of one man's journey, both physical and emotional, to a new phase in his long and rich life. It is clearly a journey that the author would have preferred not to have taken, but having taken it, though against his will, he makes the most of it. A gifted writer, the author shares his experiences with great candor and insight.

This is an informative, inspirational work from the heart. Those who read it will gain knowledge of the insidious disease that is macular degeneration. It is certainly a disease with which all those who may potentially become afflicted should be familiar. Baby Boomers, in particular, should take heed.

        5 out of 5 stars Audiotape version.......2002-06-20

This book has so much to offer my alert and intelligent 90 year-old uncle, who is struggling to maintain his existential connection with life as macular generation cuts him off from the reading that has given him intellectual sustenance over so many years, that it is really depressing not to find an audiotape version available on Amazon.

My mother has macular degeneration and needed this book on tape. .... My mom found the book to be very helpful. I also read it to try to understand better what she deals with every day. She also purchased 2 copies of the book in hardcover for her eye specialists. Although they know all the medical information already, the book can give them insight into their patient's plight. I recommend the book to anyone who knows or works with someone with low vision.

This is a brilliant analysis of the deterioration of vision by Mr. Grunwald who has gone through it. He handles his unfortunate situation with grace and class.

I am very surprised that this text has not been published in audio form since there are so many individuals who cannot read because of AMD, but would gain so much from Mr. Grunwalds words.
