Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great for preschool & art projects.......2007-07-13

This is a great book for pre-school age kids. It's a simple story with lots of opportunities for the kids to participate, saying what each picture is. I know a lot of teachers use this book and then have the kids make their own "ink blot" type images and then say what they see in their cloud. Very cute book.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-05-20

Great book for teaching shapes and cloud, fun to read with felt board activity.

5 out of 5 stars Replace that TV!.......2007-05-14

Tell the children to turn off the TV and read this book. It just begs them to try their hand at making some "spilled milk" with blue construction paper and cotton balls or ripped white paper. Parents and grown-ups are allowed to make designs, too (They will want to do it!).

5 out of 5 stars child book.......2007-05-08

My son at 13 months was introduced to this book at storytime at the local library. It was a hit at storytime and continues to be a hit at our house. My son has learned sign language and this book reinforces all of his animal signs. It is a great classic book.

5 out of 5 stars cute book.......2006-11-09

I remember this book being read to us way back in first grade. After the book was finished, we were given sheets of white paper and told to rip it(no scissors!) into shapes of 'spilled milk' to glue onto a darker piece of paper.

    Book Description

Fall has come, the wind is gusting, and Leaf Man is on the move. Is he drifting east, over the marsh and ducks and geese? Or is he heading west, above the orchards, prairie meadows, and spotted cows? No one's quite sure, but this much is certain: A Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows.

With illustrations made from actual fall leaves and die-cut pages on every spread that reveal gorgeous landscape vistas, here is a playful, whimsical, and evocative book that celebrates the natural world and the rich imaginative life of children.

Includes an author's note and leaf-identifying labels.

5 out of 5 stars Simple text enhanced with a big dose of creativity!.......2007-07-06

My husband bought this for our two-year old, and we love reading it together with her. The text is simple, as it traces the journey of Leaf Man...the leaves used are magnificent in their colors...some bold, some subdued, but all unique and beautiful. I have since done some basic art projects with my daughter using this book as inspiration. We collect leaves wherever we go and hope to create a little book of our own!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-11

My two little readers absolutely delight in this book. They love the language; they enjoy following the leaf man on his autumn journey; and they very much love to read it aloud to any adult who will sit with them for 10 minutes.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-24

One of Lois Ehlert's best. I bought it for my mother-in-law who is a gardener and general nature-lover. But I use it to teach about leaves and using your imagination in my preschool art classes. The children all think it's so much fun. They always finish reading with so many more ideas of their own to get started on.

4 out of 5 stars For leaf lovers!.......2006-11-07

My five year old and I really enjoy this book. My son enjoys looking for the pictures the leaves make and I enjoy the fact that the author collected these beautiful leaves, made images out of them and wrote a story around them! Colorful, imaginative, fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Creative look at Autumn.......2006-10-18

This is a WONDERFUL book! We read it to our class of 3-year-old preschoolers, and they were absolutely captivated. They were so quiet and engaged that they forgot to ask when we were leaving to go on our field trip.
As an added plus, we had one little girl who liked it so much that she had her mom go to the library to check it out to read at home. The child then sat down to re-create the pictures on each page using leaves she picked up in her yard. You know it is a good book if it encourages that degree of creativity and industry in a 3-year-old!

5 out of 5 stars Every Reader Should Own This.......2006-10-09

I can only add to what others have written. Each of these "ShrinkLits" (Shrunken Literature) is unbelievably clever, but without being formulaic.

Another reviewer mentioned Beowulf. Sure, I liked the couple Danish but I laughed out loud at, "Later on as King of Geats, He performed prodigious feats. Till he met a foe too tough (Non-Beodegradable stuff)."

Or how about The Count of Monte Cristo, which ends "Tremendous wealth helps one compete. Persistence pays, revenge is sweet. The combination's hard to beat."

The Bridge of San Luis Rey - a terrible book and a worse movie - in its ShrinkLit form comes out a beautiful poem.

I don't know why Maurice Sagoff never made a bigger splash, but this one book is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Humorous if you are familiar with the work, otherwise could be incomprehensible.......2006-07-07

A shrinklit is a short piece of humorous prose that is a very brief synopsis of a major literary piece. They were defined by the Sagoff and fifty shrinklets appear in this book. Two of the smaller examples are:

"The Communist Manifesto", by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels

      Workers, unite!
      Workers, you knight-harassed, feudal lord-ridden serfs in an earlier day;
      Workers, you night-toiling vassals of bourgeois exploiters of today;
Workers, you nigh-to-death victims of class war, arise - grab the power away!
      Workers, unite!

"The Raven", by Edgar Allan Poe

      Raven lurches
      In, perches
      Over door.
      Poet's bleary
      Query -
      "Where's Lenore?"
      Creepy bird
      Knows one word:
      "Nevermore."

While I found the poems fun to read, if you aren't familiar with the work being referenced, then it is quite likely that the humor will be lost on you. I am not saying that you need to have read the work, but you must know the basics of the work to appreciate the references. For example, without knowing the story of Don Quixote, the poem that makes reference to windmill monsters will be incomprehensible.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for People with Too Much Education!!!.......2005-02-24

      This book is FUN!

      Here's a test:

      "Monster Grendel's taste is plainish.
      Brekfast? Just a couple Danish"

If you got the joke in the rhymed couplet above, you will thoroughly enjoy this small book. It will surely amuse anyone who has both love for the classics and a sense of humor.

Its condensed and witty renditions ofttimes shine new light on old works. It's a fine little gift for the person who has read everything!

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious.......1999-08-23

This truly amusing book will take you back to your days of required reading and give you a new appreciation of these works. While not at all a replacement for these classics. Students should read these too in an effort to 'not hate' what they are reading. The cover art is funny too. Check out the picture for "Antigone"

      Book Description

By studying the dinosaur bones discovered over the last two hundred years, scientists have an idea of how big some of the dinosaurs were. Now dinosaur fans of all ages can see for themselves exactly what "big" means. Vivid and exciting, Gigantic! puts some of children's favorite dinosaurs head-to-head with monster trucks, cherry pickers, and tanks.

As a child, Patrick O'Brien was fascinated by the illustrations of prehistoric animals in children's books. This lifelong fascination has grown as he continues to study and paint these giants of the past. In this book, accessible to even the youngest picture-book readers, his realistic, highly detailed illustrations easily convey size, and provide a fascinating study of the giants who once ruled the earth.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and wonderful, Sal teaches self-acceptance.......2001-09-08

The author has created an endearing character who has real-life concerns of size and self-acceptance. The book is about sunflowers and families, but it is really a tool to help children appreciate their own unique abilities and perspectives. Sunflower Sal is an unpretentious child who loves her family, her life and the large sunflowers she plants yearly. She learns to love her size, as well. By accepting that some things come naturally to her, she gives up her struggle and "thinks big". Her contribution is heart warming, and very like Sal herself.

5 out of 5 stars Assisted by her family, Sal finds her "gift" by thinking big.......1999-01-15

Sal is a big girl in search of her special talents. She admires her grandmother's quilting abilities and tries to quilt herself, but is dissatisfied with the results. With supportive encouragement from her family, Sal pursues her gift of planting sunflower seeds, and is beautifully rewarded at harvest time. A great book to promote positive self-esteem (especially in girls). Warm, lovely illustrations.

      Book Description

By the time that travel writer Jeff Greenwald hit his late thirties, he had covered more ground than Magellan, Marco Polo, and Columbus combined. But he also came to a sobering conclusion: airplanes had reduced his exotic explorations to a series of long commutes. So he set out to rediscover the mass, the gravity, and the size of the world. His mission: to circle the earth without leaving its surface.

What followed was a remarkable odyssey, as Greenwald scaled an active volcano in Guatemala, rode a rat-infested ferry across the Persian Gulf, dropped by Paul Bowles's flat unannounced, saved a baby snow leopard in Tibet, and spent his fortieth birthday marooned in the Sahara. And no matter where he found himself, he sent reports of his exploits from his ever-faithful laptop to the screens of thousands of eager Internet readers. A pilgrimage both hilarious and harrowing, insightful and wise, The Size of the World takes you on an adventure you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars Around the world with out a plane.......2004-01-29

The author decides to take a trip around the world without ever setting foot aboard an airplane. He takes a ship, hikes, hitchhikes, takes trains, ect... Greenwald shows the good, the bad and the dirty of long-term travel.

5 out of 5 stars Great book !!.......2003-07-16

There is a great quote from this book: "Strange travel suggestions are like dancing lessons from God." Take the quote to heart and you will find that, like Jeff Greenwald, your travels will be full of wonderfully uprising twists and once in a lifetime experiences! I can't say enough good thins about the book. It enthralled me from cover to cover. I have loaned out my copy so many times that It has come back tattered, full of margin notes, and dog-eared. If travel literature is your thing, this is bound to be a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars A Humorous Voyage Beyond Self-Importance.......2000-07-18

He sets himself up for a karmic tumble and of course his fall from grace is hysterical. Fortunately there wasn't far to fall so he survives with some great stories to tell. I enjoyed this book so much I gave it to my husband and kids (of the adult variety)in turn. For a month, it seemed someone was always erupting in laughter somewhere in our house. Unlike Paul Theroux (whom I enjoy in spite of his crankiness), Jeff Greenwald's most humorous revelations are usually at his own expense. As generally happens, travel highlights the contrast between the romance of the idea with the reality of the voyage and visa versa. This isn't a trip I'd take myself, but I'm very glad Mr. Greenwald did!

3 out of 5 stars I thought this book was about going around the world...........2000-01-19

I thought this book was about going around the world, and enjoj all the adventures of what was to come, but only offered a little of that... Greenwald is a very good writer, but spends too much time in his self pity about his G/F's he left behind and the one in India with papaji.. He shouldnt have rushed his experience about "having to get to Mt. Kilowas" for the excursion, he was just trying to get his girlfriend back.. although this book has its moments, I recommend Danzingers Travels ...

      5 out of 5 stars A great travelogue!.......1999-11-10

This is perhaps one of the best travelogues ever written. Contrary to previous reviews, Mr. Greenwald's grasp of Buddhism is quite solid, not resembling a "flirtation" whatsoever. As a fellow buddhist and world traveler myself, I found his trip hilarious and awe inspiring. Travelogues too often times fail in their attempts at being effective personal essays, but Mr. Greenwald hits the nail squarely on the head with this one (as he does with most of his books). Read this and buy his other works too. You won't be disappointed.

There are far more than seven wonders in a child's world--award-winning illustrator Lois Ehlert's In My World reveals more than a dozen! Die-cut pages layer creature upon creature, each cutout giving glimpses of the next. An adjective on each vividly colored page provides a hint of the almost abstract shape, while the flip side names the image: "wiggling worms," "leaping frogs," "shining sun," "growing fruit." The clutter of colors and shapes is almost overwhelming at times, making it difficult to recognize the featured object. On the other hand, this jumbled quality beautifully suits the illustrations of butterflies and flowers and birds, for example. Young children will be fascinated by the magically shifting outlines with their brilliant, bold colors, and by the rebus poem at the end, which features all the shapes in the book.

Ehlert is the bestselling illustrator of Waiting for Wings, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by John Archambault, and many others. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

      4 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book!!!.......2002-07-17

I work at a library and I borrowed this book from the library. I now have to purchase it for him. When I told him that I was going to take it back to the library he threw a fit NO NO NO!!!!! This book is now in our home library collection. At the end of the book the author uses all of the symbols in the book in a short story. He is only 21 monthes and knows all of the symbols that appear on the that last page of the book. I don't especiall care for the choice of cut-out design chosen for the flower or the fruit but he seems to know what it is.
