Book Description

This comprehensive and engaging introduction to visual culture provides an overview of a range of theories about how we understand visual media and how we use images to express ourselves, to communicate, to experience pleasure, and to learn. Using over 175 illustrations, Professors Sturken and Cartwright examine how images - paintings, prints, photographs, film, television, video, advertisements, news images, the Internet, digital images, and science images - gain meaning in different cultural arenas, from art and commerce to science and the law, how they travel globally and in distinct cultures, and how they are an integral and important aspect of our lives. These images are analyzed in relation to a range of cultural and representational issues (desire, power, the gaze, bodies, sexuality, ethnicity) and methodologies (semiotics, marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism, postcolonial theory). Practices of Looking provides an explanation of the fundamentals of these theories while presenting visual examples of how they function. Central concepts such as ideology, the concept of the spectator, the role of reproduction in visual culture, the mass media and the public sphere, consumer culture, and postmodernism, among others, are explained in depth and in accessible, informative language. Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright provide the best introductory book for students coming to the study of visual culture for the first time. Truly interdisciplinary, this book aims to be the key text for courses across a range of disciplines including media and film studies, art history, photography, and communication media.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best books about visual culture.......2007-09-21

The authors of this book very clearly articulate the considerable factors of the visual culture in mass media and visual art. Not only the pictures cited in the texts are also quite helpful to better understand the details of description, but also more importantly this book provides knowledgeable contents and information enabling readers to be aware of the significant roles of visual culture and how it is embedded in our lives, influencing the whole culture, society, industry and other many impacts of social forces.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2007-02-26

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in media studies. The language is simple and articulate. The authors provide plenty of visual evidence in each chapter. If you enjoy reading about popular culture, even advertising strategies- this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture.......2006-03-25

I actually returned this book after leafing through it. It was a little disappointing and did not have much information other than common sense kind of info. Where was the meat?

4 out of 5 stars Review of Chapter Nine.......2003-09-30

As a class assignment, I closely studied chapter nine of Practices of Looking, and researched several of the listed source materials. This chapter is entitled "The Global Flow of Visual Culture" and deals with the globalization of Western media, primarily in the form of television and the internet. The authors explore such topics as the history of media globalization, its effects on non-western cultures, pros and cons of the internet, and possibilities that new global technologies afford us.
This chapter was well-presented, persuasive, and useful. It offered a cohesive and informative discussion of a broad variety of topics, dealing with each one in satisfactory depth and detail. After researching a few of the listed sources, I found that while some of them seemed to be surplus to the actual chapter content, those that were used were, on the whole, represented accurately and fairly.
I recommend this book to anyone studying visual culture, due to its detailed and informative treatment of this broad and varied topic.

5 out of 5 stars Brief on Practices of Looking (with emphasis on Chapter 8).......2003-04-26

In Practices of Looking, imagery in culture is shown to play on the way we perceive, initiate, and direct ourselves in our daily life. This book, indicates that we rely on imagery to guide us daily. This book explains how imagery is the most relied upon role model of today; basically, due to the fact that it is the most direct measure for a humans consumption of information. It provides input on how imagery sells goods through advertising, how images evoke personal memories, and how images can provide us with scientific data. In Society, Imagery can be found in all areas of the social arena. Influence of imagery is never counted alone in any arena. It is quoted in Practices of Looking "That images are never singular, discrete events, but are informed by a broader set of conditions and factors. The identity of science in correlation with imagery is explained in a wide spectrum of social engagements. Anything in the fine arts, film, television, and advertising, to visual data, can provide insight into the way we see things.

In Practices of Looking, written by Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright, mediums of influence and expression for Science and Imagery are identified in Chapter 8, Scientific Looking, Looking at Science. This chapter projects ideas with scientific imagery from the early 19th century to modern day. The chapter opens your eyes to the realization that we are constantly being fed ideas from imaging dealing with any subject matter. Whether the ideas are correct or not, most people today take the information and the images they see very seriously, especially when there are relations to science. Maybe due to the fact that science has proved itself in time, at least this is one opinion written in Practices of Looking; life science is seen as the "truth" and is accepted as objective knowledge due to the fact that doctors have a clearer understanding for the body through their experience. The understanding and the experience of Doctors is covered very thorougly throughout this chapter. It explains how imagery even comes into play in arenas we would never correlate influence from imagery, like (law and medicine). This chapter provides us with archival proof, predictions, perspective for current and past issues, time frames, and also developmental measurements. I found this book to be a great resource for understanding the influence that imagery has upon us in society. It really gives one a great look at the daily impact that imagery plays, and how it effects the publics outlook. I would definately recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about "how art and media plays a role in society".

3 out of 5 stars inconsistent arguements.......2007-06-14

In the begining of the book the author states that media news sources are not reliable.Yet, later in the book she uses the news media reports to support another arguement.I found that odd. While I agree with the premise of too much noise in our lives I didn't find her resoning very convincining.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up call for the TV generation.......2007-06-11

Wow! What an insightful book. A must read for everyone!

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2007-05-10

PRO: This book articulates what many of us suspect but don't have the time or energy to fully explore: too much media ruins lives. Her strongest chapter "Are you strong enough?" discusses how our highest human faculty is the mind and it's reasoning capability. It basically discusses how reflection is a lost art. We try so hard to be distracted and entertained; the silence that breeds unity with God is lost. We as a nation have become content with letting the media THINK for us since we are too busy with everything else in the world. This book has some outstanding statistics as well. It is very well researched and documented. I also appreciated the proactive steps it includes in the back of each chapter on tangible ways people can moderate the use of media in their lives. Finally, this book is balanced in that Tomeo isn't trying to tell us to throw the TVs out the window. Good can come from technology and she highlights this point esp. with good quotes from the late Pope JP2.

CON: I wish she would have delved more into cell phone usage and the impact that's having on culture. It's like the huge elephant in the room that wasn't really addressed much.

I also think the music section left a little something to be desired. We all know rap is harmful. But she didn't do much to address other genres of music that can stray into sad or inappropriate messages like most R&B and some alternative music as well.

Finally, I think this book limited its universality by leaning too heavily on the Catholic perspective. I am a strong, practicing Catholic myself, but I could see the shortcomings in how other religious perspectives weren't really validated. She threw out the "Christian" term regarding music and performers but even that wasn't consistent. And she includes things like "Catholics need to make their voices heard" where she could've simply said "People who want to protect traditional morals" etc. As a Catholic, it all applied to me. But this book has such good information and insight that I'd hate to see it bypassed by a lot of people who may not relate to the religious theme so much. We all need to band together to beat this media monster. Not just Catholics or Christians... but all people who want to fight for the decency in their families.

All in all, I do recommend this book highly. And to the reviewer who commented on the politics of it, no such statements were made. Tomeo addresses abortion and euthanasia but she doesn't sit down and tell you how to vote on Social Security or anything. She simply discusses what everyone already knows: the media is "left of center", and she backs it up with facts too!

2 out of 5 stars Some good points but too politically bias.......2007-05-03

Did not realize you had to be republican to be catholic. (I'm an independent - nothing is black and white). Sad thing was that i was in agreement with alot of things she said in the begining of the book. People do not realize how the media affects them on a daily basis. She was right on when she says we are becoming a society that just reacts to stimulli rather than reflecting on situations and decisions we face. This goes for adults as well, not just kids. Its too bad she had to get so political, she will turn off more people that way than trying to have all people embrace her ideas. She even trashed listening to "rock" - there are very good christian rock bands out there.

5 out of 5 stars An Intelligent and Useful Analysis and Guide to the Media.......2007-02-26

This book is the most comprehensive and intelligent analysis of its kind I have had the pleasure to come accross. The author presents the nine dominant forms of the media, explains their significance, and provides an easy method of using the media without having the media use you. The insights of the book are powerful, and the statistics are stunning. You will be amazed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Many friends have borrowed this book.......2003-03-27

It is an excellent book and many friends have borrowed it and bought their own copies.

One warning.
There are two chapters that hit a nerve with some people. Number one is the chapter on abortion. If you know anyone who has had one they immediately put the book down and have nothing but bad things to say about it, irregardless of the other chapters. The other subject is homosexuality. If you have any friends who are gay or believe that gays are victims they will shut down and discount the book entirely.

I almost wish I could remove those chapters for those individuals so they wouldn't lose their objectivity.

1 out of 5 stars Revisionist History - A Book Full of LIES.......2003-02-03

This was a book full of lies. Revisionist historians like Moore only write to promote their agenda, which is the theocratization of this country.

You want to know what our forefathers thought, what they intended for this country? Read the debates from the Constitutional Convention, the Federalist Papers, The Anti-Federalist Papers. Read the biographies and collections of letters of these great men. Don't get your history filtered through the opinions and lies of a zealot like Moore.

Reading things like this, that contradict mainstream thought and reinforce religious ideology, I know, makes readers feel special, like they know something that the rest of poor, deluded American society doesn't. They are wrong. And so is Moore.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry, it doesn't cut it sometimes........2001-09-03

Well, i can say that this is a good book. It has SOME good info in it. However, some of what seems to be the best info seems to be from sources that are quite possibly highly biased. It definitely tells truths, but sometimes they turn out to be half truths. I think if you are considering buying the book, go ahead and buy it. But when you find a good argument make sure to check the sources to make sure you don't come of sounding like an idiot :) Make the decision for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-01-04

I read this book when I first started going to college, at a time when I was questioning my faith because of the incessant secularism I was bombarded with from professors. Reading this book helped me settle my heart about my faith by showing me that the secular academic onslought of ideas that I was drowning in was not well-established, objective, scientific truth, but rather a highly biased, one-sided version of events. Whether regarding American history, the sexual revolution, homosexuality, entertainment, or even law, David T. Moore helped me see that Christians need not accept their beliefs solely "on faith," but that faith can be reasonable, too. His chapter on evolution was especially insightful for me, for it showed me that in spite of all the gobbly-de-gook that professors were shoving down my throat, it was actually more reasonable for me to believe in a Divine Creator than it was to assume that my entire existence was nothing more than a cosmic accident which occurred in a puddle of slime millions of years ago. This book showed me that not even science is above politics and moral agendas. David T. Moore's book was an excellent introduction for me to the culture war that has corroded American society.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Will Set You Free.......2000-03-31

A very well researched book that provides christians withamunition to fight against the lies of evolution, sex, family, entertainment, and America's providential history. This book was very easy to read and contains great quotes. Moore gives truths and evidence for his convictions. He tackles very controversial issues like homosexuality, abortion, and the entertainment industry with a great deal of class and boldness. A book every American should read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Church.......2007-03-20

Shane Hipps has a knack for being able to effectively read the pulse of our media drenched culture without falling into the polarized positions of most 'Christian' books. Most treatments of culture either wag their finger from afar (void of authentic engagement or understanding), or they immerse themselves so deeply in popular culture, losing their sense of perspective (void of the countercultural nature of the church). Shane avoids both by gleaning from the wisdom of cultural/media prophet Marshall McLuhan, who coined the phrase, 'the medium is the message' as well as the concept of a 'global village'. His application of McLuhan's thought has stunning pertinence to contemporary Christianity.

The fair, balanced, and thoughtful treatment results in some fantastic thoughts on how media shapes our faith, our gospel and our church. Though involved with the emerging church, Hipps doesn't use the book as a platform for mere emerging church promotion. He does offer a strong (but well informed) critique of the evangelical seeker church method, but he also offers some valid warnings for leaders in the emerging church as well.

This book is a powerful took in drawing the reader far enough away from the electronic media that has become commonplace in our lives and our faith, so that we are better able to focus and evaluate. His prescription is not the way of the Luddites or the Amish (although he is a Mennonite!). He instead challenges the reader to understand the power of electronic media, apply our faculty to think critically, and choose to use our media wisely and authentically.

Two thumbs up here. I consider this book a 'must read' for all church leaders.

3 out of 5 stars Starts well finishes poorly.......2007-02-15

Some great thoughts in the book. Starts very well and finishes poorly. The first part is definitely helpful... if you are into doing and thinking about church differently then this may be your book.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses the needs, concerns and future of a dynamic church structure........2006-11-05

THE HIDDEN POWER OF ELECTRONIC CULTURE: HOW MEDIA SHAPES FAITH, THE GOSPEL AND CHURCH is essential reading for any believer who wants to understand how gospel is presented through media filters. From questions of the neutrality issue in media analysis to cultural opportunities the church has missed and how the church can take advantage of cultural trends, THE HIDDEN POWER OF ELECTRONIC CULTURE addresses the needs, concerns and future of a dynamic church structure.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2006-08-08

If you liked "The Long Tail", "Tipping Point", and "Freakonomics," you'll find practical, lucid, and intelligent perspectives within the pages of The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture: How Media Shapes Faith, the Gospel, and Church.

5 out of 5 stars Asks the Right Questions.......2006-07-17

The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture is undeniably one of the most significant books that I've read this year. Shane Hipps has taken the discussion of changing forms in church - whether worship, or preaching, or leadership, or church governance - and raised a new, often ignored set of questions. He states this in his introduction:

"A host of books and articles have been written on what has changed and how the church ought to respond to those changes. However, few writers have made a serious effort to understand why these changes have occurred...I propose that the answers to the question of why these changes have come about can be found in part by exploring the nature and effects of media and technology on culture." (p. 16-17)

And this is exactly what this book does. Hipps proposes a model in which these questions can be considered and then uses that model to tackle some of the pressing form-related questions that the western church faces at the beginning of the twenty-first century. To be sure, much of the book is an application of Marshall McLuhan's writings from the mid- to late-twentieth century. But, for those (like myself) who have never read McLuhan, he distills the essence of McLuhan's thought and connects it with current discussion and debate. For those who have already read McLuhan, I suspect that the book may offer just as much for exactly those reasons. In short, this is a wonderful, readable book that will aid the church in her often tumultuous dialogue with a media-savvy culture.

Book Description

Are you aspiring to become a writer, but don't know what it entails, how to approach it, or even where to begin? In compelling-yet-simple terms, this one-of-a-kind book offers the guidance you need to do all that and more. Following the successful and increasingly popular concept of D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself), "$30 Writing School" is designed to get you up and running on the process for organizing, writing, selling and promoting your own books. You'll find it pleasantly easy to relate to author Michael W. Dean, who is a product of the "indie" revolution as a proven author, filmmaker, and musician himself. His unique style offers an edgier approach that you don't find in your typical "how to write" book. Written in a conversational tone, techniques and explanations are liberally spliced with Dean's personal accounts and stories. You'll learn specific elements of how to get published including how to write a proposal, get an agent, get a publisher, and work through mainstream outlets. From the author's perspective of having done it himself, self-publishing is explained and encouraged, from Quark layout, to working with a printer, to getting press and distribution. "$30 Writing School" accompanies two successful others of its kind, "$30 Music School" (1-59200-067-3) and "$30 Film School" (1-59200-171-8), both published by Course Technology PTR. This incomparable do-it-yourself approach to becoming a writer is realistic, straightforward, and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Want to be a writer?.......2007-07-28

Michael Dean's books are an awesome information base to get your creativity kick-started. This one is no exception. His is a no-nonsense approach and these $30 books are worth MUCH more than the titles imply. Very fun to read, too!

5 out of 5 stars All you need to be a writer is here.......2007-05-12

Michael W. Dean's "$30 Writing School" covers everything you need to know technically about being a writer -- from explaining how to write well, recommending what software and hardware to use, even explaining how to organize chapters of a book...and everything in between.

That information alone makes it a handy reference book for any writer. But the BEST part of this book is how inspiring it is. Dean's personal stories and philosophy of creating art make you want to start writing NOW, and free you from some of the misconceptions about writing that can lead to "writer's block".

The book also includes chapters about working with publishers and editors, doing book signings, and even includes a CDrom full of extras.

The thing that makes you know this is the real deal is that Michael Dean is "living the dream" (as he says in Chapter One): writing novels and non-fiction books, doing book signings and interviews, making music, films, podcasts, etc. Who better to teach you how to get your book finished than someone who is actually doing what he recommends (and clearly having a lot of fun doing so)?

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to write ANYTHING.(I personally have found Dean's tips useful not only for writing books but also magazine articles, essays, self help articles, short stories, etc.) While this book answers tons of technical questions, it is really more about having the mindset of a writer, the mindset of an artist who has a love of the written word and wants to share his or her ideas with the entire planet.

Forget all those other books on writing that waste your time with stuff you don't need to know and useless advice. Get "$30 Writing School" and get started writing today.

5 out of 5 stars Plug in.......2006-08-21

Reading this book felt like something from The Matrix. A download of necessary information and it's over before you know it.

Dean's style of writing makes it easy to follow as he lays out what to do, and what not to do, when embarking on your own written projects.

The end result is an enjoyable learning experience.

I can't wait to read the rest of the $30 series.

5 out of 5 stars Improve Your Skills and Have Fun Doing It.......2006-08-14

I read the book "$30 Writing School" by Micahel W. Dean while driving from Minneapolis to Denver. Well, actually, I was passengering and my husband was driving. I picked it up because I have started writing for our small town newspaper, and I wanted to improve my skills and abilities, and as every English major known to man, I dream of writing a novel some day.

I couldn't stop reading. Not only was it a great read and entertaining, it was full of good information. My $30 bucks was well spent and I plan to spend some more on "$30 Music School" for my husband. I have added not only writing skill to my arsenal, but also marketing and productions skills as well.

5 out of 5 stars $30 Writing School, Smart, Interesting and a Pleasure to Read.......2006-06-26

Reading Michael Dean's $30 series of books is like going to a smart, interesting friend that knows a lot about a subject and saying "Tell me what I need to know about (X)".

In this case (X) =writing , and the book in question is "$30 Writing School."

The book covers an overview of grammar and spelling. It covers software, and the way it's used professionally. The book covers the do's and don'ts of inquiries, outlines, and actual writing, with a eye towards publication. Michael tells you exactly how he did it, in interesting anecdotal detail. It `s not easy to write what is essentially a technical manual in a way that is personally revealing, but that is the unique quality found in Michael Dean's non-fiction.

When I want an overview of a subject, I want an expert with an opinion. I want someone smart and knowledgeable to tell me, "Do this, then do this, don't do this, avoid this". After I gain knowledge and experience, of course, I can draw my own conclusions. After reading this book, I had all the basic knowledge I needed to write a book proposal, solicit it for publication, and to make sure I had an understanding of the structure and process involved in every aspect of actually writing the book.

Michael does it in a conversational tone, filled with examples of personal experience, that is truly entertaining . I found myself amused and interested to the point that I would forget that I was actually obtaining knowledge as well.

Another unique aspect of Michael Dean's non-fiction writing is that there is a strong philosophical undercurrent, and this book is no exception.

The written word is the most powerful tool for initiating change that the world has ever known. It can inspire, clarify, enlighten and motivate. $30 Writing School reminds us of this, and Michael Dean's words themselves inspire, clarify, enlighten and motivate. The book addresses the specifics but it never looses sight of the big picture which, oddly, is a rarity in instructional writing. The books tells us HOW to write, but it reminds us of WHY we write as well.

Book Description

"Stop the presses!" You've heard newspaper editors shout that phrase in old movies. Joseph Farah was never a newspaper editor in the movies - he was one in real life. But he no longer works with ink, presses and newsprint.

A decade ago, Farah founded WorldNetDaily.com (WND.com) and became a pioneer on the New Media frontier. Today WND.com is the largest independent news service on the Internet. Stop the Presses! is not just Farah's story, but that of a new wave of media superstars who have forever changed the way Americans get their news and express their views.

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Matt Drudge...these are just some of the New Media names that old-school media like ABC News has acknowledged "rule our world." This revolution has shaken the foundations of the mainstream media, eroding its ability to control the flow of information...and with it, the power to control the lives of millions around the world.

The New Media revolution's beginnings have never been told - until now.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! An Vitally Important Read For All Americans!.......2007-09-21

One book that must be read and understood to help save our Country! Joseph Farah (WorldNetDaily founder) takes the reader through the history of the mainstream/left biased/established media. Mr. Farah explains in detail how the established media has become the way they are and why they have lost so much credibility. This is an important read that exlains first hand the abuse of power that takes place towards citizens of the United States when the left is in power. Never has there been a more important time to read and understand this book with the elections approaching.

5 out of 5 stars For the history books.......2007-08-17

Joseph Farah takes us on his journey to make a major contribution and a lasting difference in our free press. In the process, he reminds us what the true purpose of a free press in a free society has always been: to serve as a watchdog to government; to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. He demonstrates the importance of the press as a fourth estate, which helps the people hold the government accountable, while also pointing out the flaws in the modern trend of "fair and balanced" news.

The author leaves no doubt that he is indeed a Christian, but he does very well in calling attention to the unfairness of labeling himself or WorldNetDaily as "conservative" or "right-wing." While the viewpoints in the publications of WND do resemble more what you might expect to read in early America, versus our increasingly postmodern America, this is simply traditional. That is, after all, the entire point of this book: to tell the tale of the New Media Revolution, and all the while call us back to a proper understanding of our free press in this free society; an understanding that is unfortunately absent in the big indoctrinating press of today.

Given the nature of the book, I believe that freedom loving Americans the world over should appreciate this book; and with a wonderful endorsement from Rush Limbaugh right on the back cover, this book is especially hallowed for Americans with conservative sympathies.

5 out of 5 stars Stop the Presses (Reloaded).......2007-08-06

Joseph Farah (founder of WorldNetDaily) takes the reader through a smooth and easy to read history of the current mainstream/lame-stream/established media. Farah explains in detail how the established media has become the way the are and why they have lost so much credibility and why they are losing credibility on daily basis.

Before reading this book there was not much respect for any news media. After reading this book it (and it is an easy read) quite a bit of respect for the "true" function of the news media has been restored.

Farah is honest about himself, who he is, what he has done in the past good or bad.

Everybody, not just Americans, should read this book! I dare say that a lot of Americans will learn a lot while reading it. Non Americans might be jealous once they learn how the government and the news media was meant to be in the US.

5 out of 5 stars Knock your socks off reading.......2007-04-21

This should be required reading for all journalism students, professors, writers, editors and anyone interested in being more informed about the direction media is taking. It is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Old Media, "Left" in the Dust.......2007-04-13

I appreciated reading the behind-the-scenes accounts and how the mainstream (or "lamestream") media has been swayed by pressure groups of all kinds. When one fully understands why the press was created in the first place, as a check and balance for all 3 branches of government, not as a pawn for what government wants people to believe, it clarifies for the reader why the "New Media" is critical for the health of our country. This book contains the truth about the Clinton administration, Google, Matt Drudge and many other fascinating pieces of information. A must-read for every American!

Product Description

In the style of a cinematic travel journal, film columnist and critic Jeffrey Overstreet of Christianity Today and lookingcloser.org leads readers down paths less traveled to explore some of the best films you ve never seen. Examining a feast of movies, from blockbusters to buried treasure, Overstreet peels back the layers of work by popular entertainers and under-appreciated masters. He shares excerpts from conversations with filmmakers like Peter Jackson, Wim Wenders, Kevin Smith, Scott Derrickson, producer Ralph Winter, and stars like Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan, Keanu Reeves and the cast of Serenity, drawing war-stories from his encounters with movie stars, moviemakers, moviegoers and other critics in both mainstream and religious circles. He argues that what makes some films timeless rather than merely popular has everything to do with the way these artists whether they know it or not have captured reflections of God in their work. Through a Screen Darkly also includes a collection of reviews, humorous anecdotes and on-the-scene film festival reports, as well as recommendations for movie discussion groups and meditations on how different films echo the myriad ways in which Christ captured the attention and imagination of culture.

5 out of 5 stars Movies, not Books.......2007-06-16

What books were to previous generations, movies are to the present one; their ability to teach and shape our view of reality is unparalled by any other medium. Christians can't afford to be ignorant of the content and power here, and "Through a Screen Darkly" provides an excellent guide.

5 out of 5 stars decent book - inspirational.......2007-06-12

keen insight and well written. going to go back to movies thinking a little differently going forward.

5 out of 5 stars An Articulate Voice.......2007-04-25

As a filmmaker and a Christian I am always striving to find an articulate voice able to handle the spiritual as well as the cinematic. With Jeffery Overstreet's Through a Screen Darkly I have found a strong one. The book traces Overstreet's own experience with cinema as an artist, a Christian and a human being. The book serves to open readers' eyes not only to their own experiences, but to the larger questions of artistic as well as moral excellence. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Bridging of Faith and Culture .......2007-04-10

Jeffrey Overstreet expertly guides readers on a cinematic journey, thoughtfully raising questions and broaching issues to help Christians and non-Christians alike challenge their traditional views on art, faith, culture and cinema.

Overstreet demonstrates remarkable skill in providing a comprehensive and thoughtful reflection on a wide variety of films. He discusses them in fresh ways, displaying cultural relevance in his interpretation while also dramatically illustrating the spiritual principles and biblical truths that surface in the themes of each film.

Overstreet's masterful work will offer you a fresh look at beauty, truth, evil and redemption in the movies. A must-have for any film lover!

5 out of 5 stars Great title for a good book.......2007-03-31

If you love the movies, you'll enjoy this lively and informative tour of more than 200 films--reviewer Jeffrey Overstreet's favorites, plus some of those he cites as the most culturally significant. Speaking to a generation raised by looking at screens, Overstreet helps the reader identify the core values and key ideas reflected in contemporary cinema.

He does so as a Christian writer. Scarcely a few decades ago, the phrase "Christian movie reviewer" might have seemed an oxymoron: entire denominations and churches shunned the theatre, believing it to be evil per se. Overstreet is a much-needed voice that helps postmodern Christians and others be fully engaged with their culture, yet move beyond its limitations to produce high-quality films. Emerging young film producers such as Dallas Jenkins, Aaron Beckum and Blake Nelson point the way toward a future in which Christian moviemakers may populate the screen with excellent, must-see fare.

The dialogue between Christianity and a secular culture draws and holds Overstreet's attention. He discovers and explores Divine images and themes in the films of Martin Scorsese, Krzysztof Kieslowski and others, finding values in these films that may not reflect the conscious decisions of the filmmakers. Overstreet is at his best as he highlights the moral conflicts and ethical choices that movies exemplify--which serve as perfect launching points for group discussions and coffee-shop conversations.

Jeffrey Overstreet draws on more than a decade of reviewing films: his work has been noted in TIME magazine and is often featured in Christianity Today. Reading through this carefully-researched and extremely well-written book is like taking a college-level course in film studies--from a Christian perspective.
