Herein lies many of Kierkegaard's most vehement attacks on his utter disgust as what he sees as the shallow and hypocritical Christians of his time. In fact, the rantings rank up there with Nietzsche's tirades against what he liked to call the "rabble."

As you may have guessed by the title, this is not to be an uplifting book. Kierkegaard will never be mistaken for Robert Schuller - that much is for certain. In it, the Danish philosopher (generally considered the father of existentialism) grapples with guilt. Not just anyone's guilt, either, but Soren Kierkegaard's guilt. In page after page he discerns how man's sinful nature is corruptive to his relationship to God. What is worse, no matter how hard he tries, he can't stop sinning any more than he can consciously stop breathing.

Kierkegaard then looks up from his desk and wonders why all those so-called Christians out there aren't doing the same thing that he is. The Dane is introspective, to say the least, and the nucleus of his thought emanates from Socrates' words at his trial, as recorded in Plato's APOLOGY:

...I say again that the greatest good of man is daily to converse about virtue, and all that concerning which you hear me examining myself and others, and that the life which is unexamined is not worth living

Here is a great man's attempt to follow the dictum of Socrates, and examine his own life. In this sense, THE SICKNESS UNTO DEATH is comparable to St. Augustine's CONFESSIONS, albeit a bit on the morbid side.

One of the Dane's favorite metaphors was of driver falling asleep at the reigns of his wagon. So too did K believe that that is how most of us live our lives. With this in mind, it is not surprising that he anoints this work as an "awakening" for his readers.

Profound insight into the nature of sin.......2001-12-05

I am not a philosopher or even a literary person by any stretch, but I found this book surprisingly accessible. I believe it is essential reading for anyone dealing with despair (depression) in their lives- especially Christians.

The jewel that I was able garner from this book is that faith, fundamentally, is forgoing our common senses and putting our hope in God even when all our senses and previous experiences tell us otherwise. Because with God, everything is possible.

Accepting Despair.......2000-12-15

In perhaps his most relentless probing of the human condition, Kierkegaard's "The Sickness Unto Death" rediscovers the very notion of "sin." Having been tossed around by anyone and everyone in the Danish Christendom of his day, the word "sin" has lost much of it's original meaning; hence he chooses the term "despair." By doing this, Kierekgaard rediscovers "original sin," or that notion of sin which has been lost through misuse. For Kierkegaard, "despair" or "sin" is not simply an individual act, but it is a state of existence. Only when an individual acknowledges the inherent human situation, one that is "in despair," can one then "actively despair" and move out of the aesthetic mire of common existence. It should be noted that it is an ill advised version of Christianity which is "in despair," such a Christian wanting a simple solution without having to face the terrifying problem of our being. Kierkegaard not only documents the different levels of "despair" (no one type is exclusive of others), but he looks into why it is that we often refuse to accept our condition, such denial forcing us to remain "in despair." As he himself makes clear, "The very nature of despair is that it is unaware of being despair." There are endless implications from such an important work, not least of which is the idea that words can hold as well as lose their meaning, depending on how they are used and who is using them. But over and above a theory of semiotics is Kierkegaard's belief that authentic Christianity can only arise for the one who faces his/her desperate situation; and upon doing so, sees no other way out than total submission to "the Power that posited it."

Edith Stein's views on womanhood are just beginning to be dissected by theologians in light of the popularity of Pope John Paul the Great's "Theology of the Body."

She explores the vocation of men and women, in particular, by expanding upon Aquinas's 'anima forma corporis' in her discussions of `woman's soul'. She is quite candid about her beliefs: "I am convinced that the species humanity embraces the double species man and woman; that the essence of the complete human being is characterized by this duality; and that the entire structure of the essence demonstrates the specific character. There is a difference, not only in body structure and in particular physiological functions, but also in the entire corporeal life. The relationship of soul and body is different in man and woman; the relationship of soul to body differs in their psychic life as well as that of the spiritual faculties to each other"

In her analyses, St. Edith Stein is uncompromisingly orthodox on the role of men and women in society and relation to each other. The Virgin Mary is highlighted as a model several times throughout the book. Interestingly, though, she highlights and expands more than any other writer that I have come across the strength, validity and necessity of spiritual maternity in all areas of life. In doing so, she vividly explores what John Paul II later termed "the feminine genius", though it is never labeled as such in her essays. She is infatuated with what is inherently feminine nature, and, in contrast, masculine nature, developing some psychological insights into female empathy that parallel Simon Baron-Cohen's findings in the 1990s.

Stein explores practically every female vocation: marriage, the consecrated life, the professional life, singledom, and those who possess a "double vocation" of more than one of these. She also addresses women in political life, the public realm, universities and other areas of national life. She writes: "The singular mission of the working woman is to fuse her feminine calling with her vocational calling and, by means of that fusion, to give a feminine quality to her vocational calling."

Edith Stein implicitly confirms the authority and Tradition of the Church, but also asserts the necessity for the development of doctrine, which potentially could incorporate her explications of femininity. As I mentioned above, these explications are completely orthodox. Stein argues, for example, a traditionally Catholic opinion that `the intrinsic value of woman consists essentially in exceptional receptivity for God's work in the soul".

In addition, as an educator herself, a good portion of the essays focus on what should constitute a female education. Stein reveals some markedly progressive insights for her time on the choice and scope of female education. She argues against excessive specialization, favoring a global, holistic, and personalized approach to human society. Education requires "broad human and personal contact", particularly for women who are social creatures.

Stein pushes boundaries and speaks her mind, and 'conservative' only by contemporary standards - not for the typical liberal women's studies class. Rather, she is a feminist in the vein of many contemporary, orthodox Catholic feminists, such as Katrina Zeno and Pia de Solenni.

Woman by Edith Stein.......2004-05-12

Provides a thought-provoking look at the spirituality of lay and religious Catholic women. Sure to be controversial, it's not the typical thing you hear from either feminists or anti-feminists, but quite uniquely it's own.

The Implications of Immanence develops a philosophy of life in opposition to the notion of "bio-power," which reduces the human to the question of power over what Giorgio Agamben terms "bare life," mere biological existence. Breaking with all biologism or vitalism, Lawlor attends to the dispersion of death at the heart of life, in the "minuscule hiatus" that divides the living present, separating lived experience from the living body and, crucially for phenomenology, inserting a blind spot into a visual field.

Lawlor charts here a post-phenomenological French philosophy. What lies beyond phenomenology is "life-ism," the positive working out of the effects of the "minuscule hiatus" in a thinking that takes place on a "plane of immanence," whose implications cannot be predicted. Life-ism means thinking life and death together, thinking death as dispersed throughout life. In carefully argued and extensively documented chapters, Lawlor sets out the surpassing of phenomenology and the advent of life-ism in Merleau-Ponty, Derrida, and Foucault, with careful attention to the writings by Husserl and Heidegger to which these thinkers refer.

Strong Collection of Essays on Contemporary French Philosophy.......2007-01-10

Over the last decade, Leonard Lawlor has established himself as one of the most rigorous, most original and most insightful readers of the French philosophy that first emerged in the 1960s. In Implications of Immanence, he advances further his rich interpretations of Derrida, Foucault and Merleau-Ponty through studies of a range of their texts, including the most recent texts by Derrida. Throughout, Lawlor shows the powerful place and significance of Merleau-Ponty's thought in later French Philosophy, while also identifying the subtle difference that separates his work for that of Derrida and Foucault, and also the subtle difference that separates Derrida from Foucault. This is a set of highly valuable studies that powerfully illuminate both the larger issues of the philosophical tradition and the specific texts under investigation. Especially strong, in my view, are the chapters on "Memoirs of the Blind" and "Le Toucher, Jean-Luc Nancy"; these essays in particular are essential reading to students of these texts by Derrida.

Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions was among seven signed works by Kierkegaard, each published concurrently with one of his seven pseudonymous works--in this case, with Stages on Life's Way. The two volumes not only have a chronological relation but distinctively treat some common themes. It is quite possible, the editors suggest, that Kierkegaard worked alternatively on the two manuscripts: on Stages at his ordinary desk and on Discourses on Imagined Occasions at his high desk.

The first of the three discourses, "On the Occasion of a Confession," centers on stillness, wonder, and the ultimate object of a human being's seeking--in contrast to the speechmaking on erotic love in ""In Vino Veritas,'" part one of Stages. The second discourse, "On the Occasion of a Wedding," complements the second part of Stages in which Judge William delivers a panegyric on marriage. The third discourse, "At a Graveside," sharpens the ethical and religious earnestness implicit in Quidam's "A Story of Suffering," in the third part of the other work.

With Christian Discourses, Kierkegaard intended to conclude the signed "second authorship" following Concluding Unscientific Postscript as the end of the pseudonymous writings. The dominant theme of Parts Two and Four, "Joyful Notes in the Strife of Suffering" and "Discourses at the Communion on Fridays," is a reassuring affirmation of the joy and blessedness of the Christian life in a world of adversity and suffering. Written in ordinary language, the work combines simplicity and inwardness with reflection and presents crucial Christian concepts and presuppositions with unusual clarity. Among the discourses are some of Kierkegaard's masterpieces.

The first pseudonymous esthetic work, Either/Or, was accompanied by a series of religious discourses. To maintain the dialectical structure of the dual authorship, Kierkegaard wrote an accompanying work to Christian Discourses: an esthetic essay on a foremost Danish actress. To her, it was a "wonderful surprise to read [how] the inspired theoretician manages to express clearly and unambiguously what one has felt without being able to find the words to clarify and illustrate this feeling."

A Profound Experience.......2006-03-12

I dreaded reading Works of Love, but it was necessary to complete the course. At first it was a struggle to get into the book, but once one gets used to the style, you can get into it. By the time I finished the book I was emotionally overwhelmed.

The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) reflects on several Scriptural passages, such as St. Paul's famous passage on love in his First Letter to the Corinthians. His discussion sheds light on the application of these concepts to day-to-day life. Kierkegaard reminds us that love brings a sense of immortality, for it binds the temporal with the eternal.

Reading this book may well give you a life-changing experience - it has certainly changed my outlook on life.

One of his best works.......2003-02-18

_Works of Love_ by Kierkegaard is the most uplifting, encouraging, and hope-restoring book I have ever read. Kierkegaard's statement that "the greatest act of love anyone can ever achieve is to mourn for someone who is dead" is a statement I have used to guide myself through innumerable existential crises and has given me hope in my darkest hours. The wisdom contained in this book is an essential tool in dealing with the premature and untimely death of a loved one, and restoring your hope and faith in God even in the face of tragedy. Kierkegaard's sense of empathy and morality is unsurpassed by any other philosopher living or dead, and I will also go so far as to call him a saint.

This book is also extremely well-written, well-translated, and readable. _Works of Love_ is living proof of the theory that inherently complicated and profound subject matter does not necessarily have to be extremely difficult to read. Kierkegaard's use of anecdotal situations and clear real-life examples to illustrate his theories make the book more readily understandable, and his writing style naturally lends itself to clear and accurate translation. Unlike many German philosophers of the same time period, Kierkegaard (from Denmark) does not lapse into highly personal, abstract, and inaccessable concepts, but instead focuses on more realistic and timeless problems that have plagued humanity since the dawn of sentience. While authors like Hegel and Schopenhauer are intellectually stimulating and mildly interesting, reading their works does not exactly make you happier, more hopeful, and more empathetically caring. You are often left with nothing but pie-in-the-sky theories regarding esoteric philosophical questions that are only marginally relevant to the everyday realities we experience. Kierkegaard, on the other hand, can greatly improve the quality of your life, and help you achieve a positive and non-hateful outlook.

Also keep in mind that this is easily Kierkegaard's most personal book, revealing the inner nature of his own spiritual beliefs. Unlike an author like Heidegger, who will ramble for 400 pages and never even bother to tell you if he believes in God or not, Kierkegaard is up front and honest with the reader, speaking directly to us. A true expert on Kierkegaard knows that he often wrote under pseudonyms, and playfully stepped into another character or alter-ego, lending an almost ficticious aspect to some of his philosophical works. In reading some of these pseudonymous books, a careful reader will observe that Kierkegaard often contradicts his real persona in subtle ways. It is easy to overlook his purposeful self-contradictions and alter-ego characterizations unless you compare these works with his more personal and truthful works, _Works of Love_ being the prime example.

Should you buy this book? YES!! I unconditionally recommend this book to anyone, anywhere. It is the perfect introduction to Kierkegaard; the one you should read first. It is also a recapitulation and summary of all of his most important concepts, so it could also be read last. But at some point you must read this book. The only type of person who would not appreciate this book is someone who has thoroughly convinced himself of the hopelessness, meaninglessness, and absurdity of existence; someone who has become completely disillusioned with God in response to tragedy, and believes knowledge can only beget sorrow. Most people with this kind of negative outlook are often anti-intellectuals anyway, and seldom read legitimate philosophical books anymore. But even if you are disillusioned with God and unable to comprehend tragedy, you still might want to read this book because it may provide the only way out of your depressing predicament. _Works of Love_ is a shining beacon of hope in an often violent, tragic, and chaotic universe, and is one of the few books ever written that is sophisticated and credible enough to pull even the most die-hard sceptic out of the despair of hopelessness.

The Center of Kierkegaard's Philosophy.......2002-11-28

This is more of a reaction to Kierkegaard's "Works of Love" than a review of the book. I cannot perfect perfection.

First, he hits the genius of Christianity, and take's Paul's chapter on Charity, 1 Corinthians 13 as the backbone text. This is an impressive "love poem" which really explains why Christianity is so novel. If you don't believe me, read pre-Christian literature, such as Socrates, Homer, or The Epic of Gilgamesh. Pre-Christian society ignored human dignity and worth, and people were just functions of the state, or the whim of the king.

Secondly, Kierkegaard recognizes that love is a work, and not merely a state of heart or a chattering point. This notion of work is anathema to "Pop Protestantism," which was Kierkegaard's mortal enemy. He commented that the obsession with "grace" had turned Christianity upside-down, and had caused men to try and cheat God out of his religion. This is another way of saying that faith without works is dead.

Kierkegaard last insight is that God is the basis of love, which he underscores in the opening invocation. Too many people gloss by this prefacing prayer, but that is what separates love and love with power. God gives us power to love.

I found this translation quite readable. Soren, in any version, is rather thick, almost as if he is intentionally trying to hide things. Part of difficulty comes from the dense 19th Century verbosity that was a token of the age. However, his greatest asset is humorous illustrations, which helps mentally fix the points forever.

The only criticism I have is that Kierkegaard does not connect love to the Atonement. He does, in the introductory benediction, assert that we need to have love securely wedded to God, but he does not connect love to the Atonement and the Resurrection, the central doctrines of Christianity.

This is Soren at his best, so I recommend that you begin your Danish journey here, then move on to "Either/Or," "Fear And Trembling," and "Sickness Unto Death." But the key to Kierkegaard's existentialism is love.

To conquer the anxiety.......2000-08-01

The title of this book is originally named not as "The Concept of Love", but as "The Concept of Anxiety". It means that this book is written not for love to be desired, but for anxiety to be conquered. Therefore, if you fell anxious because of love, you should read this book. He will introduce you to the true love with the healing of your heart.

This book is written after "The Diary of A Seducer", which resembles certain French immoral novel. This is the secret that he must write this book. It didn't bring pleasure to him actually, but the deep gap between him and his fiancee. Therefore, he falled into the critical solitute accompanied with anxiety and sorrow. To overcome this situation, the sincere relationship with people and God are necessary, he thinks. From my viewpoint, this is all of the background of this book. The reason that his thinking gets much sympathy from people is the modern theme of the absense of the human relationship.

The Core Work of Kierkegaard - Must Read.......2000-05-19

Whatever you may think about Soren's views, this book is the pinnacle of his work. The first part of the book clarifies the meaning of true Godly love, to love your neighbor. Each page is riveting and triggers new understanding about truly loving another not romantically or out of worldiness, but out of Godliness.

Potent yet readable.......2003-02-18

This book, page for page, may be Kierkegaard's best ever. This is a rather slim volume, but is packed with Kierkegaard's most profound and life-changing philosophy. Compared to his other works (almost all of which I highly, HIGHLY recommend) this book comes across as one of the most potent and dense. Therefore, I would recommend this one first and foremost to a reader who is pressed for time and is intimidated by the sheer length of Kierkegaard's other works. If you have not devoted every minute of your spare time to reading every page of every book ever written by Kierkegaard, my first question, of course, is WHY NOT?!?!? What are you thinking??? Get with the program!!! I am willing to forgive you, however, if you could just find time in your busy schedule to read this one slim pamphlet. It is the "Reader's Digest" condensed Kierkegaard for realistic 50-hour-a-week men, and it could radically change your life for the better. Profound, uplifting, loving, hopeful, and positive, I recommend this book to all readers.

Masterpiece of true Christianity.......1998-08-27

Kierkegaard exposes what it means to be a Christian. And be warned. It is impossible to read the book and walk away. A spiritual mirror is setup for those who dare to look. Individual's life including Scripture study is the core of this book.
