With the basic principle that creative expression is the natural direction of life, Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan lead you through a comprehensive twelve-week program to recover your creativity from a variety of blocks, including limiting beliefs, fear, self-sabotage, jealousy, guilt, addictions, and other inhibiting forces, replacing them with artistic confidence and productivity.
This book links creativity to spirituality by showing how to connect with the creative energies of the universe, and has, in the four years since its publication, spawned a remarkable number of support groups for artists dedicated to practicing the exercises it contains.
Book Description
The Artist's Way is the seminal book on the subject of creativity. An international bestseller, millions of readers have found it to be an invaluable guide to living the artist's life. Still as vital today-or perhaps even more so-than it was when it was first published one decade ago, it is a powerfully provocative and inspiring work. In a new introduction to the book, Julia Cameron reflects upon the impact of The Artist's Way and describes the work she has done during the last decade and the new insights into the creative process that she has gained. Updated and expanded, this anniversary edition reframes The Artist's Way for a new century.

This is an outstandingly wonderful book.......2007-10-05
I am part of a group that is working through this book with a facilitator. We are in our fourth week and 99% of the group of about 12 women are realizing positive changes and more energy in their lives. In my opinion, it is better to work with this book in a group, getting everyone's feed back when we meet once each week. It has simple tasks to do daily that produce self-revealing insights for us. I can't say enough good things about it. I am so grateful for being introduced to it.
The Artists Way.......2007-10-02
This book is so incredible. I am starting to see the creative possibilities again.
get out of your own way.......2007-09-27
When I worked at an art supply shop, we carried The Artist's Way as a standard item; oft I would skim through it, purchase the book, then wrap it up and hand it over with a blessing. I never thought that I was blocked creatively or had an issue with the producing of art. 5 or more years have passed, 8 or 9 gifts have been given and this year, for my birthday I bought it FOR MYSELF. How many times do we as creative people take for granted our creativity? ~or~ Are we blocked as people, and therefor our creations suffer as a result??
What Ms. Cameron has done is give us creative types {WE ALL ARE} permission to peel away the layers of ingrained LEARNED crud- at our own pace- to reveal the artist we all need to embrace- be she/he a painter, writer, sculptor, composer, chef- whatever. Set up in weekly chapter format, there are exercises to get one centered- back to self. You start by making a commitment to yourself to write daily, take care of your body mind and spirit, and relish in personal outings of "frivolity."
We all possess within us the strength and understanding of what works and does not. This wonderful book just pushes us along gently to reveal it.
Happy Reading,
Violet {Artist at Large}
It works!.......2007-08-19
I received THE ARTIST"S WAY when it was originally published (1994?). I was living in Japan and had the time and opportunity to work thru it. It was very interesting and informative in revealing myself...to myself! It wasn't until a year later when I returned to the U.S. that a light when off in my head and I realized that the impact the book had made on me was reflecting in my life. My career became easier. My relationships became more meaningful. There was a tremendous block that had been removed and I srongly believe that it was the result of working thru this book. It made me stronger. Over the years I have recommended it to others and I highly recommend this edition to you. (One small thing that it did was to enable me after fourteen years of procrastination to write to former president, Jimmy Carter. Well, he wrote me back!) Good luck with your journey!
not much content.......2007-08-15
This book may impress many people because of its psycho-lingo, its New Age palaver, and its abundance of second person pronouns. There is a 12-week program to follow, but that is probably for the author's desire to become a cult leader and the readers' desire to become cult followers.
But if you want to learn something you don't already know, you might be disappointed. The message of the book, in fifty words or less, is to resist any friends, relatives, or guilty feelings which tell you that creative pursuit is a waste of time.
That is nothing new. A Transactional Analyst might say the same thing, using the terms Parent and Child. A Freudian might say the same thing, using the terms superego and id.

Derek is Tuning IN with Tamara.......2007-05-29
Derek Rydall talks about the ideas in his book on my spiritual entertainment talk show in a way that shows he's living the message in every fiber of his being. Reading his book renews my passion and confidence for my personal dream and vision of shining as a real light. He reminds me of my divinity and power in this magical play of life. He explains "oneness" like I've never grasped it before. He reveals the most important "it's who you know" metaphysical truth in Hollywood. He reminds me of my higher purpose and now I have a much deeper meaning to my work in television, and I'm able to articulate it to others so I can touch and awaken all those who cross my path on this beautiful journey. He enables us all to be true healers through the entertainment medium as we perform the real work of remembering and awakening wholeness in every heart on the planet. -- Tamara Henry, MA, Producer/Host, IN with Tamara Henry, Santa Monica News Anchor
A spiritual approach to show business life.......2007-05-19
In his second book, Derek Rydall attempts to provide an antidote for the cynicism, greed and rampant sociopathic tendencies which plague the entertainment industry. To counter these, he exhorts people to become `enlightened entertainers', who see the entertainment industry as a force for Good and who live their lives accordingly. A tall order, perhaps, but in the book he provides all the necessary information in order to set out on this journey of the soul.
Rydall starts off with the basics: identifying what enlightened entertainment is, and why audiences need it. He also provides the basic tools needed for the journey: types of meditation and soul-searching exercises. Next up is the big picture, a look at the realities of show business and the spiritual world, and how these contrast and (possibly) interact. Changing the business is something which can only happen one person at a time, so the rest of the book is devoted to developing the character of the reader. First on the purely personal level, then specifically as an artist, and finally as an entertainment professional. The final section of the book helps the reader create a career plan.
This book is definitely very New Age in style. If you're not into spirituality, the book won't do much for you - although many of the exercises are introspective ways of getting to know yourself better, and these will be beneficial for anyone. If you are spiritually enclined, Rydall's book will undoubtedly be inspirational and provide you with great insights.
More Than Entertainment.......2007-05-14
This book is not just for screen writers who want to go beyond simple entertainment to meaningful film, but for all writers who want to make a difference. The time for enlightened entertainment is now! This book is not only a stepping stone and good resource, it's invaluable. Read, learn, and profit.
So Inspired!.......2007-05-11
Derek,
First let me complement you on your book. I really am inspired by every word. I did the visioning exercise today on the industry. I've know for some time that my purpose as an actor and writer is to wake people up to their humanity through the emotions evoked in my performances or my writing. Today I got so clearly that the essence of the industry is love and connectedness.
Thank you!
INSPIRED in 2007,
Traci Dority
More than just a book...it's an experience.......2007-05-11
Firstly, well done! Well done, congratulations and two thumbs up for writing There's No Business Like Soul Business. Not only was it an inspiring read for the spiritual warrior but a brilliant example of someone wanting to help other artists and pass on oh-so-valuable insights about not only life but the wonderful world of entertainment. Reading each chapter I could hear the lessons of Deepak Chopra shining through, as I have read many of his books, and then to apply them to entertainment breaking down the myths that people can get caught up in, and allow a new road to be paved for the "enlightened entertainer" who can then make the conscious decision to shift his/her attitude and focus on your inner being as the tool for transcedence is...well, awe-inspiring.
A must read for anyone wishing to follow their dreams in the wonderful world of entertainment!

Book Description
In this practical guide to enlightened living, Chögyam Trungpa offers an inspiring vision for our time, based on the figure of the sacred warrior. In ancient times, the warrior learned to master the challenges of life, both on and off the battlefield. He acquired a sense of personal freedom and power—not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The Japanese samurai, the warrior-kings of Tibet, the knights of medieval Europe, and the warriors of the Native American tribes are a few examples of this universal tradition of wisdom. With this book the warrior's path is opened to contemporary men and women in search of self-mastery and greater fulfillment. Interpreting the warrior's journey in modern terms, Trungpa discusses such skills as synchronizing mind and body, overcoming habitual behaviors, relaxing within discipline, facing the world with openness and fearlessness, and finding the sacred dimension of everyday life. Above all, Trungpa shows that in discovering the basic goodness or human life, the warrior learns to radiate that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others. The Shambhala teachings—named for a legendary Himalayan kingdom where prosperity and happiness reign—thus point to the potential for enlightened conduct that exists within every human being. "The basic wisdom of Shambhala," Trungpa writes, "is that in this world, as it is, we can find a good and meaningful human life that will also serve others. That is our true richness."

Path to Liberation.......2007-10-05
Dispite Chogyam Trongpa's controversial lifestyle, this is the best Spiritual book I have ever read. I agree with the sentiment that I would like to have this book if stranded on an island.
Quoted from the back cover -- "In this practical guide to enlightened living, Chogyam Trungpa offers an inspiring vision for our time, based on the figure of the sacred warrior. In ancient times, the warrior learned to master the challenges of life, both on and off the battlefield. He acquired a sense of personal freedom and power -- not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge."
In his view not only was individual enlightenment not mythical, but Shambhala Kingdom referred to an enlightened society that could actually be realized. The practice of Shambhala vision is to use mindfulness/awareness meditation as a way to connect with one's basic goodness and confidence, as well as with that of others and the world. Shambhala vision is described as a secular approach, rooted in meditation, but accessible to individuals of any, or no, religion. In Shambhala terms, it is possible, moment by moment, for individuals to establish enlightened society. source: wikipedia

Shambala reads good.........2007-07-14
Enjoyable read. Easy to relate with examples book provides. Author draws out ideas presented in the book pretty well. Reading is light but entertaining.
Uniquely Valuable.......2007-03-09
This book makes a unique contribution to the quest for sanity and significance, for ourselves and our world. It stresses our essential goodness and authenticity. and charts out how we can achieve a standing beyond fear. We can re-focus from fear of death to the "Great Easern Sun vision," appreciating ourselves and our world: a very gentle approach. Written in an approachable and comfortable way, it can help us to reframe our lives, move us to a standing in bravery and tenderness, an orientation so vital to the planet now.
Most Valuable Book.......2004-10-30
This was the most inspritional book I have ever read. I give as a gift to everybody I haven't already givin it too. BUY this book and if you don't like i will buy it from you!
Wise words greatly needed now.......2004-09-25
I read this book for the first time in the early eighties on a flight to Dallas via San Antonio, San Marcos and Austin (cheapest ticket). It was not my first contact with Eastern Philosophy. I attended several TM classes as a senior in high school and had always been very interested in Tibet and Buddhism.
This book can alter your life. It is deceptively simple. How to live an honorable life without the violence that we are so accustomed to. I have read it numerous times and given away all of my copies. During the years I have had several books on my shelf that Chogyam wrote and never read them. It seemed to be enough just to have them there sitting on the shelf radiating his wisdom out to the world from my bookshelf. Silly, I know but my heart was opened, moved and changed by the wisdom contained in just this one book. Working in a giant communications company and living in the southwest tail of the bible belt offered many, many opportunities to test and apply what I had absorbed from this book. Combined with a weekly fix of New Dimensions I set about trying to live my life from the wisdom contained. It was and still is a wonderful experience.
For those who have a difficult time in separating the message from the messinger you might try reading "The Essential Crazy Wisdom" by Wes Nisker.
Chogyam was a great gift to America - wisdom that is desperately needed in today's times.

Changed my perspective in a very good way.......2007-09-24
This book was so good I had to buy one to put back in the church library because I didn't want to give theirs back. It is one of the few books I have read cover to cover and didn't want to end.
Helpful .......2007-08-29
Shattered Dreams is a helpful diagnosis of what may really be happening when our dreams are shattered. However, it comes across as a one-size-fits-all model. God has many purposes for allowing dreams to be shattered. Read Crabb to learn one such purpose, but realize that others exist.
"Shattered Dreams" Book & Workbook by Larry Crabb.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderbul book to use in a group Bible Study or personal Bible Study. Anyone who has experienced shattered dreams in their life will benefit from reading this book by drawing closer to the Lord.

No matter how many self-help books we read, workshops we attend, spiritual endeavors we pursue; no matter how often we cuddle our inner child or redesign our outer adult, many people keep returning to a gnawing angst and vague unhappiness, according to T. Byram Karasu, author of The Art of Serenity. One of the problems is that many of us define happiness in paradisiacal, childish terms, causing us to feel like we're missing out. "Happiness in adulthood, however, requires realism, reciprocity, and coming to terms with one's mortality," he writes. And, of course, it requires us to cultivate the art of serenity.
Like M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, Karasu brings a psychological background to the area of spiritual growth. (Karasu is the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as the editor in chief of the American Journal of Psychotherapy.) Sometimes blending spirituality and psychology muddies the waters, but Karasu has a solid understanding of how the two worlds intersect and has created an outstanding and completely accessible guide to lasting inner happiness. The door of joyful serenity can only be opened by a "combination key involving both soul and spirit," he explains. And it all culminates in the love of God. Using real-life cases from his psychotherapy practice, Karasu illustrates how the principles of soul work and spirit work are applied to daily lives. From lovers' jealousy to workplace angst, from friendships to solitude, Karasu offers original, lasting advice and insights. Read this one and put it on your shelf by your other spiritual classics--it's sure to be a lifetime companion. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
We all face adversity, both man-made and natural. How do we survive the loss of a loved one, a betrayal, illness, even impending death, and still find meaning in our lives? Even a "normal" life can seem empty, in spite of material possessions, success, power, and pleasure. In our search for fulfillment and meaning, we work through our past and present conflicts, cuddle our inner child, and redesign our outer adult. We attend workshops on life and secular spirituality and explore the comforts of traditional religion. We get married and divorced, experiment with drugs and alcohol, change jobs. And while our restlessness and unease may abate temporarily, the hollow feeling that there is something missing always returns.
In his profound and accessible work, The Art of Serenity: The Path to a Joyful Life in the Best and Worst of Times, Dr. T. Byram Karasu offers us the key to an extraordinary state of mind -- authentic, soulful happiness -- in the face of everything our life has to offer and take away. The door to this state of mind is opened by a combination of soul and spirit. It involves the soul through the love of others, love of work, and the love of community. It involves the spirit through belief in the sacred and belief in transformation. It culminates in the love of and belief in God. Brilliantly synthesizing psychology and spirituality, Dr. Karasu will guide you to explore the deepest yearnings of your heart.
There is no end to the journey to real happiness; there is no best place to start or best time to begin. So where and when to start? Start here, where you are, and start now.

Wonderful quotes and content, but very fragmented writing.......2007-09-18
I was very much looking forward to reading this book. It even started off very well. There were wonderful quotes from other authors, references to mythological tales, a couple named Joe and Lisa that suffered many problems but were a perfect example of people like us.
Then I began to realize that the book was disjointed. These little tidbits were everywhere, and often popped up out of nowhere, breaking the flow. There would be a heading in a chapter, but Karasu wouldn't elaborate on it. Paragraphs didn't flow. The ideas jumped around. There was no cohesive wholeness. The reason this is so disappointing is because he picked out many wonderful quotes and does seem to have very insightful, important messages for his readers. But they aren't well presented.
Karasu is too absolute at times. For instance, he says that the only way to forgive is to forget. Period. No arguments, not too much discussion. But isn't an individual irresponsible and setting him/herself up for failure by simply forgetting. I don't want to harp on this, because this example isn't my point. My point is that he states his ideas too absolutely.
I am a Christian who is soul searching, and I thought this book would help. It did not. But that doesn't mean it won't help others. If you are looking to read a little at a time, and feel good about some stories and about some tidbits and quotes you pick up each time, this may be perfect for you. But if you want a solid flow, and to dive deep into these topics, you may want to look elsewhere.
A Breakthrough in Spirituality Requires a Backward Leap To Faith - Believing And Loving God .......2006-08-20
How do we live life with all its "twists and turns" to find meaning and happiness? T. Byram Karasu in his extraordinary book, "The Art of Serenity", takes us on a journey to find the answer. Karasu, presently Silverman Professor and the University Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Montefiore Medical Center, serves as an excellent guide in finding the answer.
Karasu begins with the premise that we are born with the knowledge of God and are innately spiritual beings, making the cultivation of our spiritual side critical to achieving serenity. "Be a grown-up, soulful, and spiritual person...The first-step is growing up. If you have not, you cannot cultivate your soul and spirit, and will be chronically susceptible to unhappiness."
Breakthroughs in spirituality can only be made possible by a backward leap, returning to faith, that is believing and loving God. This return to faith leads us to the love of self, the love of others, the love of work, and the love of belonging - all critical to finding meaning, fulfillment, and happiness in all aspects of life.
"The Art of Serenity" is told in three parts - "The Way of the Soul" (why love makes a difference); "The Way of the Spirit" (why belief is critical to our transformation); and "The Way of God" (why religion is the natural ground of spirituality). This content-filled book can be digested by everyone, but will be most appreciated by those who have taken the first step, growing up. "Art" will not be a quick read as you will want take your time, absorbing and reflecting on its richness.
We are spiritual beings on a human path on a pilgrimage for meaning, fulfillment and wholeness. Karasu's "The Art of Serenity is a great guidebook, with all the landmarks and detours well marked.
Rare And Precious Wisdom.......2003-02-17
T. Byram Karasu, a respected teacher and author in the field of psychiatry, has ventured far beyond his field in this masterpiece of spiritual wisdom. Clearly he has been doing more than seeing patients all these years, he has been reading assiduously, absorbing the wisdom of the ages. Now, in The Art of Serenity, he distills this wisdom and his own expereinces, for all of us who are willing to taste.
It is not light reading. Karasu deals with the deep questions of life. He begins with love, work, belonging, moves on to the spiritual journey, the nature of self, the acceptance of aging, and the understanding of death. His concluding chapters, dealing with God, and bringing spirituality back home to its ground in religion, are like soaring towers, straining toward the light. The final section left me stunned, wanting to go back and read the book again.
The author uses clinical vignettes, folk-tales, bits of poetry, the Bible, the Quran, and many other works. His writing is fluid and graceful, with a kindly sense of humor. He says little about himself, putting himself into the background, and so his presence is powerfully felt--a man of learning, integrity, wisdom and care for others.
This book, I'm afraid, is not for everyone. It does not promote (or denounce) any single religion. It is not for the narrow-minded. And, I think, it is not for the young. It is a book for those who have some maturity and life experience. For those who are ready it will be a life-changing masterpiece. Thank you, Dr. Karasu. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber
Well-titled!.......2003-02-09
"The Art of Serenity" is RIGHT! This book is incredible in that it really brings you directly into the glaring face of serenity--and then serenity doesn't break eye contact!! People always say: "Do not judge a book by its cover" but I'm going to have to plead the opposite in this case. The cover of this book gives you a perfect idea of the calm nothingness that awaits inside.
Take serene and multiply it times 25! THAT'S HOW SERENE YOU WILL FEEL AS YOU READ THROUGH PAGE AFTER PAGE OF "The Art of Serenity." It is the literary equivalent of a handful of sleeping pills, and I mean that in the most positive, relaxing way. In closing, I would like to assert (serenely) that if I hadn't read this 5-star book, I would never have been able to pin down what "happiness" is. I wouldn't have known that BEFORE I can love someone I have to love MYSELF...
The price of this book is absolutely ridiculous for what you get:
total self-comprehension.
Nurturing, reassuring, and hopeful.......2003-02-08
This book doesn't leave a stone unturned in finding all paths from all backgrounds and all schools of thought in our eternal search for inner peace and happiness. Great book. Also recommended, The Little Guide To Happiness. Another book that brings us closer to the prize.

Great Read.......2006-03-28
I never realized how important it was to think and behave differently if I want my life to get better. I guess I was just in denial or something. When I started reading this book I had a light bulb moment and then couldn't put it down. I applaud Ms. Peabody for being so honest about her own transformation. I bought 4 copies for my friends and they loved it too. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Art is a spiritual path—not a religion, but a practice that helps us knit together the ideals and convictions that guide our lives. Creating art can be prayer, ritual, and remembrance of the Divine. And the sharing of this creativity with others in small groups can serve as sanctuary, asylum, ashram, therapy group, think tank, and village square. Pat Allen has developed a reliable guide for walking the path of art through a series of simple practices that combine drawing, painting, and sculpture with journal writing. Designed for readers at any level of artistic experience, the book shows how to: awaken the creative force and connect with the divine source of creativity access inner wisdom and intuition about life issues, including both personal and community concerns find a path to meaning that includes honoring, celebrating, and giving thanks explore the images and symbols of traditions such as Catholicism, Judaism, shamanism, and Goddess worship join in spiritual community with others who are following the path of art discover that artmaking can help us live our ideals and be of service in the world Detailed examples from the author's own practice of art, plus the stories and images of several other people, are presented to illustrate how art becomes a spiritual path in action. At the author's virtual studio, www.patballen.com, readers can post their images and writings, communicate with the author, and subscribe to an electronic newsletter. Blends theory and practise.......2003-06-01
What becomes abundantly clear as one reads through this bok is that H.E. Davey writes from experience. He has practised several of the "ways" to a very high level, and he is able to write about his experiences in a readable, almost conversational manner. He sees quite deeply into the heart of Japanese culture, taking the reader along a path of understanding and discovery as he presents the key concepts of that tradition. In addition to the text, the marginal reminders and definitions of the key concepts reinforce what one has already encountered in the text, and serve as a glossary of important terms. Davey provides exercizes to try at home, as well. All in all, this is a first-rate book -- helpful, accessible, accurate, and often profound.

Davey provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the principles and aesthetic qualities that characterize the Japanese arts. Ideal for Westerners interested in Japanese arts, particularly those who have practiced an art for some time and are looking to go beyond merely practicing the form and delve into the spiritual dimensions embodied in these arts. Highly recommended.
Awesome and Unique.......2003-02-13
This book is unique in that it gives Westerners a comprehensive insight into Japanese arts and ways. Not many are able to capture something so inangible as Japanese aesthics as well as Davey. A great read.
Book Description
In this book, therapists are urged to take into account the existence of spiritual aspects of personality, both in terms of making proper assessments and more focused treatment plans for people under their care. Although addressing itself chiefly to art therapists, the thrust of the text is an attempt to sensitize all clinical practitioners to the spiritual dimensions of therapy. By drawing on sources in the literature of religion, psychodynamics, systems theory, sociology, art, and ethics, the author lays a foundation for discovering and measuring clients' spiritual sensibilities and search for personal meaning of their relationship to God. Chapter 1 discusses the evolution of the book and how the author embarked upon the inclusion of the spiritual dimension in assessment and treatment. Chapter 2 reviews the literature that encircles art therapy, mental health, and spirituality and explores its impact. Chapter 3 examines the Belief Art Therapy Assessment (BATA). Chapter 4 highlights the interviews and use of the BATA with clergy, while Chapter 5 explores its use with a "normal" adult artist population. Chapter 6 looks at spiritual art therapy with emotionally disturbed children and youth in residential treatment. Chapter 7 offers a case vignette of spiritual art therapy with a suicidal anorectic bulimic. Chapter 8 summarizes the author's position and theosophy, while Chapter 9 examines the use of phototherapy as a means to investigate mourning and loss issues. The final chapter explores humankind's search for inner and outer meaning after the tragedy of September 11. In addition to art therapists, this unique book will be useful to mental health workers, social workers, educational therapists, pastoral counselors, psychol- ogists, psychiatrists, and other creative arts therapists.

fantastic entrance to the spiritual psyche.......2003-12-27
I am not sure what planet the last reviewer was on, but this book is a classic in the field of Art Therapy. Horovitz clearly operates from the heart both in her work with patients and pinnacle contribution to the field of research in mind, body, spirit continuum.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to behave in a responsible and clincial manner.
Excellent case samples underscore the root of Horovitz's theosophy and
hypothesis. A must read for all humanistically oriented clinicians!
This type of nonsense gives art therapists a bad name.......2002-06-28
Overblown, smarmy, sentimental and self-important hype.
transcendent and compelling!.......2000-04-08
In Spiritual Art Therapy:An Alternate Path, Horovitz proposes that, on one level or another, each person is a seeker of spiritual transcendence although most deny these core feelings. She suggests this search to be a critical element in attempts to cope with loss and grief, when people face the emotional work of accepting the inevitable and dealing with trauma. In this book, practitioners are urged to take into account the existence of spiritual aspects of personality, both in terms of making proper assessments and more focused treatment plans for the people under their care. Although addressing itself chiefly to art therapists, this writing aims to sensitize all clinical practitioners to the spiritual dimensions of art therapy. By citing sources in the literature of religion, psychodynamics, systems theory, sociology, art and ethics, the author lays a foundation for this work: namely, to find a way of discovering and, if possible, measuring clients' spiritual sensibilities and search for personal meaning of their relationship to God or belief in what provides meaning in their lives. In addition to art therapists, it will be useful to mental health workers, social workers, educational therapists, pastoral counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other creative arts therapists.
Book Description
Caryll Houselander (1901-1954), English artist, spiritual writer, poet, social activist and mystic, was a unique laywoman who took holiness out of the monastery, cloister and rectory and into the offices, factories, farms, streets and homes of ordinary people. In this engagingly interactive book, part narrative biography and part practical spirituality, readers will be moved to see in Caryll's story something of their own life history.
In nine chapters, Joyce Kemp explores aspects of Caryll's life, from her difficult childhood, through periods of searching, being touched by God, becoming involved with the poor and the marginalized in society, living through war, writing and meeting an early death through cancer. Each chapter is followed by spiritual exercises inspired by the techniques of Drs. Ira Progoff and Jean Houston, that are built around the topic of that period of Caryll's life.
"Caryll's spirituality is for everyone, not just monks and nuns. It is for people who have no time to pray in peace and quiet....When she shared her idea of rhythms with others, they, too, found some inner peace for their souls in the midst of the noise and distractions of their environment," affirms Kemp. Now, more than ever, Caryll's shining example will provide inspiration, guidance and wisdom to spiritual seekers, whether alone or in groups, retreatants, and anyone seeking God in everyday life.
