I have tried to read the bible straight thru and never suceeded--life came at me in many directions. After 3 years of trying, i gave up and bought the bible for dummies. This book helped me UNDERSTAND the bible, not only read the words, both equally important in my opinion. Once i started reading this book, time opened up for me and i read it in a matter of 2 weeks! I couldn't put it down--the more i learned, the more i wanted to know and keep learning. I intend to reread it because for the first time in the 4 years i have been a christian, i truly understand the religion. I would recommend this book for everybody no matter where you are in your spiritual journey. Good luck and God Bless

Both my husband and I have enjoyed reading The Bible for Dummies. It is like the Cliffs Notes version of the Bible -- making it understandable without having to attend a theology class!

5 out of 5 stars Great textbook.......2007-09-18

I am glad that I got this book. It is very helpful and a good read so far. I was also very happy with the speed in which my book made it to me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2007-09-04

The updated version of Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology is great. The font on this updated version is much larger and easier to read. Even if you own the old book, this is still a must get.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand!.......2007-09-02

Although this book deals with complex and weighty issues like Angelology, Christology, Pneumatology and others, Mr. Grudem addresses them in such a straightforward manner that without dumbing down the concepts, he makes them easy to understand and apply to everyday life.
He also addresses the fact that not everyone agrees with his point of view on every topic (me included) and goes so far as to include an index at the end of each chapter that addresses something like 18 other major views.
This is the first time I've ever read a theology book, and I was intimidated at its size (over 1600 pages!) but it really is written for those who, like me, want to understand what we believe.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome focus on God!.......2007-08-27

I have never been excited by an introduction before! This book is very encouraging and challenging yet written in everyday language! It has already helped me to learn a lot and I haven't gotten that far yet. It is exciting and I appreciate that not only does Grudem give you references for his views, but others as well! He also includes life application questions, memory verses and hymns at the end of the chapters. It focuses on God's awesomeness!

Kenneth Davis, popular purveyor of stuff you should know but never learned, turns his research engine to the land of Job and Jesus. Ever wonder who wrote the Bible, what the difference is between a disciple and an apostle, or how the Dead Sea Scrolls measure up? Davis tackles the entire Bible, book by book, from Genesis to Revelation, offering succinct capsules of the action and backgrounders that are as entertaining as the tabloids--except that Davis's information is reliable. On every page, you can see the immense amount of research he has put into this work, drawing on the most up-to-date scholarship and presenting it in fresh, easy-to-swallow doses. Chronologies at various points put historical events into perspective. The high point of Don't Know Much About the Bible comes in the New Testament section, where Davis compares the different versions of the Gospels for the various episodes in Jesus' life and offers insights on issues that are still discussed today. By the way, did you know that Jesus' name was really Joshua and that he wasn't born in the year 1? More tidbits await. --Brian Bruya

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

The Bible, author Kenneth Davis explains, fits that definition of a "classic" offered by Mark Twain: a book that people praise and don't read. But this entertaining historical study will likely compel listeners to reach for their dusty copies of the world's most-owned but least-understood anthology once again. And not simply because the author reminds us of the drama and intrigue, the tales of rape, impaling, and ethnic cleansing routinely found in its pages. Davis paints the larger historical context in which the Bible was written, providing a sense of the culture and environment in which the familiar stories came to life. Calling on new research and scholarship into the Bible's composition, he provides fascinating background to dimly remembered stories that gives them renewed impact. Using a series of easy-to-follow questions and answers, he offers explanations about when and by whom the Bible was written; how the stories of other traditions influenced the Judeo-Christian teachings; where the Garden of Eden might have been located; why an earthquake may have played a part in the "walls tumbling down" at Jericho; why Jesus may not have said everything we think he did, and much more. He also points out that mistranslations from the original Hebrew have made their way into modern versions of the Bible, explaining where and how they occurred. Conceding that his program will anger some, as it challenges many cherished but mistaken assumptions about the Bible, Davis also hopes that listeners recognize that Christian belief and uncovering the truth are not at odds in this program, but rather that learning and wisdom, even when they reach unsettling conclusions, can ultimately complement faith. Book Description

With wit, wisdom, and an extraordinary talent for turning dry, difficult reading into colorful and realistic accounts, the creator of the bestselling Don't Know Much About®, series now brings the world of the Old and New testaments to life as no one else can in the bestseller Don't Know Much About® The Bible. Relying on new research and improved translations, Davis uncovers some amazing questions and contradictions about what the Bible really says. Jericho's walls may have tumbled down because the city lies on a fault line. Moses never parted the Red Sea. There was a Jesus, but he wasn't born on Christmas and he probably wasn't an only child.

Davis brings readers up-to-date on findings gleaned from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic Gospels that prompt serious scholars to ask such serious questions as: Who wrote the Bible? Did Jesus say everything we were taught he did? Did he say more? By examining the Bible historically, Davis entertains and amazes, provides a much better understanding of the subject, and offers much more fun learning about it.

1 out of 5 stars And if you DO know quite a bit about the Bible?.......2007-09-19

"If this is divinely inspired, couldn't God get that year right?"

That's a quote from Davis dealing with the year Jesus was born. It seems that the Bible isn't terribly concerned with Jesus' BD. There are still cultures in our world that don't care about birthdates. And that proves what, Davis? That God can't get things right in your own personal vision? Or, as I see it, is it more likely that the God of the Bible knows exactly what to stress and when to stress it; after all, "At the right time, Christ died for the ungodly."

Davis finds countless opportunities to question the Bible's accuracy and to question God himself. Frankly I think Job did a better job of this then Davis ever could.

As has been said elsewhere, much of Davis' critique is outdated and disproved, so I won't revisit that here. I will say that SOME of what he writes is true (are you really shocked to learn Jesus wasn't born on December 25th or what Noah's ark really looked like?). Still, once I knew Davis' agenda was one of contempt for his subject, I couldn't wade through his self-serving opinions to sift out those truths. I must also say that this is Davis' MO for all of his works.

Using "CE" and "BCE" in place of "BC" and "AD" also affects me like nails on a chalkboard. They have nothing to do with correcting a dating design and everything to do with political correctness. Juvenile.

If you are serious about the Bible and have already studied it (cover to cover, right?) and read some of the other recommended reading found here, then Davis' book "might" amuse you. It made me sad that Davis is too busy trying to be amusing and condescending to really seek God.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Collection Of Information And Knowledge.......2007-09-01

The title is a bit misleading in that it suggests this book is only for biblical newcomers. In fact, it contains much that will be of interest to both the uninitiated and those already somewhat familiar with the Bible. The introductory chapters contain a tremendous amount of useful facts and knowledge about Judeo-Christian history. Some of it, such as how the emperor Constantine first allowed Christianity to be openly practiced in the Roman empire around 312 CE, I already knew. But there was still much new that I learned. For example, this book explains why the additional biblical texts known as the Apocrypha are included in Roman Catholic versions of the Bible but not in the Jewish canon or Protestant versions of the Bible. This is because the Apocrypha were later books written in Greek rather than Hebrew. Primarily for this reason they were excluded from the final Jewish canon but included by Catholics in their Greek Septuagint version of the Bible. Much later the Protestant Reformation chose to exclude the Apocrypha also. This is only a small sample of some of the fascinating knowledge contained in the early chapters.

Most of the rest of the book offers insightful and well researched interpretations of both the Old Testament and New Testament, examined book by book in chronological order. Much of what Davis wrote I had already read elsewhere. But once again I learned many new things, especially about the historical and cultural context in which the Bible was written.

I feel bad that many of the negative reviewers here are so stuck in a narrow minded and fundamentalist form of religious faith that they are unwilling to accept and appreciate all the excellent scholarly research that has been done and is still being done on perhaps the most important and influential book in human history - the Bible.

This is great reading for anyone, religious or secular, who is open minded, intellectually curious and wants to learn more about this fascinating subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great book...learn what you THINK you know !!!!.......2007-08-07

If you want to learn about the important "facts" of the old & new testaments... this is the book to read. It doesn't try to sway you one way or the other, but gives you the quotes and info to do so yourself. I never realized, for instance, that there were so many differences between the 4 scriptures of Luke, Mark, Matthew and John. There's a lot I can say,l but I don't want to ruin it for someone who never read the Bible and THINKS they know what it says. Let's put it this way... it's not quite like hollywood movies or what your Sunday school teacher or your parents try to convey. Great Stuff !!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars read it...no disrespect intended..........2007-06-18

Kenneth C. Davis has written a very enjoyable and easily understood explanation of the Bible. I didn't find it offensive or disrespectful in the least. In fact it helped me understand alot more of the Bible and eased so many of those burning questions in my mind. Using humor and the ability to break down the mystique it can help people appreciate the Bible more.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-01-27

First, the people who write negative reviews of this book, suggesting that the author is biased against the Bible, must realize two things: most people who believe that the Bible is the inerrant word of a supreme being, believe so based on the circular reasoning that it says so in the Bible; the vast majority of people in the world do not believe that the Bible is the word of God (and, thus, do not believe in the resurrection and such), and, in many cases, believe, instead, that THEIR holy books represent God's word. As obvious as these statements are, I'm always amazed that so many people simply are unaware of these facts, or choose to ignore them.

In that light, the author is, if anything, biased TOWARD the Bible being the word of God. He does not speak against the resurrection and other miracles, e.g., but seems to allow for the possibility that they may actually have occurred.

I had a great time reading this book. I knew the Bible very well many years ago, and reading it was a reminder of how beautiful and fascinating it is, warts and all. This book is about as near to unbiased as one can get.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Beginners.......2007-09-16

This study is good for beginners; folks who 'just want to get started'. It's simple and provides a good outline for the studier to follow. If you're looking for more than a guide through the Bible; or somthing that provokes deeper thought, you may want to keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars Great general bible overview.......2007-08-08

This book provides a good outline / general overview of the books of the bible based on a literary view. Definitely helped as an introduction to the bible. If you are looking for indepth study of each book of the bible you will want to find another study material but this is worth having in your bible study library.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-14

I was excited when I ordered this because I am very interesting in learning the Bible in more depth. Bible study groups are good, but they typically move at such a slow pace. I saw this as an alternative.

Unfortunately, it was not what I expected. It's nothing more than a workbook that tells you to read the bible passages then provides a few questions for discussion on each section. In short, this is a workbook to be used in study groups. I was looking for more of a self study workbook with summaries of the various books. The book is worthless unless you first read the suggested chapters in the bible. While I think everyone should read the Bible cover-to-cover, I don't want to do that as part of my Bible study. I would like to read passages to add clarity to the discussion in the workbook. As I said, the workbook doesn't provide such discussion, so the entire thing comes up empty. There are probably other study guides that are closer to what I am looking for. If you are looking for a study guide for your study group, this might be just the ticket, but it's disappointing otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Opinion and Use of the book"Through The Bible in One Year".......2007-01-21

I have used this book for years as one of the texts for a Ministers In Training class. I am pleased that it is yet available through Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding teaching and learning book.......2006-11-11

I started this book for my own benefit and realized that it would make a great group bible study. Our bible study went from 4 ladies to 11 in one week. Friends shared with friends this book, and we are pleased with the ease of this book and the focus on Jesus through out the Old and New Testament. I would highly recommond this as a great one on one or group study. It's the skeleton of basic bible study!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great intro to the bible for 10+.......2007-03-20

I originally bought How to Get the Bible into your Life. I liked it a lot. It made the Bible seem practical in a way I didn't know it could be. This book may be a bit redundant, but well worth owning for the historical aspects. Both very well written. This book is well-researched and unbiased--when two interpretations are possible, he gives you a choice to decide which one to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Illustrations!.......2006-08-13

This is a wonderful text, incredibly useful.

However, what I most enjoy are the fantastic illustrations. So often in Christian publishing, the graphics are dull and insipid. But in this book, the artist captured period details with strong realism and fluid movement. It is obvious that he did a tremendous amount of research and I feel like my understanding of Scripture grew not only through the author's work, but also through the work of the artist.

5 out of 5 stars The sequel is great, too........2003-11-15

This is a really good intro to the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Clear, simple, and biblically solid.

But I like the sequel even better because it not only gives you the short course on each book in the Bible, it helps you put it to practice.

The first book--How to Get into the Bible--is history. The second book--How to Get the Bible into My Life--is history applied to our lives today.

Both are helpful, well-written, and insightful.

5 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide.......2002-01-03

How to Get Into the Bible is a wonderfully laid out book that really brings the messages of the Bible home. Each book of the Bible is reviewed. Timelines and maps of the surrounding areas, found in the first page or so of each review, help the reader keep straight complicated chronological and geographical data. Also at the end of each review is the encore section. This tells the reader where they can find similar material in other books of the Bible.

I really liked the way the book is set-up. I enjoyed the shaded boxes, which highlight famous lines and ask, "did you know" questions about each book of the Bible. The section titled, How We Got Our Bible, is helpful. That is followed by a section highlighting the main points of Bible. This can help those who may not be familiar with many Bible stories. Moreover it serves as a good overview.

This book is great because it is written for a variety of readers from different age groups. Teenagers on up could enjoy this book. You can choose to use the book as a reference book, read it as novel, or just read each review and then read the accompany book.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2001-02-12

This book is an excellent companion book for Bible study. It's a great startup book for someone who's new to the Bible and can also serve as a handy quick reference for someone already familiar with the material.

Each book of the Bible is addressed in terms of plot, main characters, the book's relationship to other Bible stories, and more. It's like a well fleshed out study outline in many ways. What I particularly liked is that even the very short books of the Bible are given equal treatment. You'll get ample material about 1 Peter, Micah, Obadiah, and other small books along with the big boys like Isaiah and John.

Time lines help you keep a mental picture of what's going on around the events of each book. Where multiple opinions and theories abound, the authors introduce the reader to a variety of interpretations and the merits of each.

While many of the author asides and comments may prove uncomfortably liberal for evangelicals or fundamentalists, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in digesting the Bible. It's entertaining and captivating enough to read straight through like a novel, educational enough to use as a supporting study text, and consistantly useful enough to keep it on your reference bookshelves.

Book Description

An Introduction to the New Testament focuses on "special introduction" that is historical questions dealing with authorship, date, sources, purpose, destination, and so forth. This approach stands in contrast to recent texts that concentrate more on literary form, rhetorical criticism, and historical parallels—topics the authors don’t minimize, but instead think are better given extended treatment in exegesis courses. By refocusing on the essentials, An Introduction to the New Testament ensures that the New Testament books will be accurately understood within historical settings.
For each New Testament document, the authors also provide a substantial summary of that book’s content, discuss the book’s theological contribution to the overall canon, and give an account of current studies on that book, including recent literary and social-science approaches to interpretation.
This second edition reflects significant revision and expansion from the original, making this highly acclaimed text even more valuable.
• A new chapter provides a historical survey examining Bible study method through the ages.
• The chapter on Paul has been expanded to include an analysis of debates on the “new perspective.”
• The discussion of New Testament epistles has been expanded to form a new chapter.
This new edition will help a new generation of students better grasp the message of the New Testament.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-06-13

The book gives great details on each book of the new testament. I actually transferred some of the information over into my bible. I really enjoyed the read. I had to read it for a class, but really enjoyed it once I got started.

4 out of 5 stars A good foundation in NT studies.......2006-11-10

This is a very good book for those who would like a basic overview of the NT books. It has a conservative slant, but also gives liberal viewpoints on Biblical topics. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB, BALANCED REVIEW OF THE NEW TESTAMENT DATA.......2006-09-07

This book is wonderful! After studying dozens of texts about the origins and modern historical analyses of the New Testament canon--ranging from Helmut Koester's Ancient Christian Gospels to Walter Bauer, Elaine Pagels, and Bart Ehrman's positivistic polemics--I finally found this book. I am a scientist (physician) and have not had the benefit of a seminary education, so I should, perhaps, have started here. The book presents thorough, well-reasoned critiques of the data and conflicting theories about the origin and significance of the entire New Testament canon, book by book. It contains ample references to the the key research and publications on various subjects, somewhat like a good scientific or medical review article. This was a very welcome contrast to the popular publications of Bart Ehrman, which typically reference only his own biased writings on any particular subject. My only criticism of this excellent text is that it gives short shrift to the history and profound exegesis of the Eastern Orthodox Church Fathers; viz. St. John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, and others. In the Orthodox tradition, we tend to view theology as a "fabric woven from on high," including revelations in the post-Apostolic era to those saints who have achieved "theosis," direct contemplation of the Divine mind.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction.......2006-05-27

As others have noted, this NT Introduction is a standard introductory text from an evangelical perspective. In this updated version, Carson and Moo add some good stuff on canonicity that was not part of the original Carson/Moo/Morris edition. Most of the remaining material is similar.

As can be expected, the analysis and conclusions in this Introduction are decidedly conservative on questions of authorship, canonicity, original situation of the writings, and historical reliability of the documents. The authors helpfully analyze many contemporary challenges to evangelical understandings of the NT so that the beginner and intermediate levels of readers will gain a good introductory grasp of the many bones of contention that exist over many issues in virtually every book of the NT. Moo's strong work in Romans and James, coupled with Carson's strong work on the Fourth Gospel, can be particularly seen in this book's treatment of these canonical documents.

One could have hoped for a more lengthy treatment of contemporary issues, and one could also have hoped for more robust bibliographies upon which the reader could proceed with more in-depth study. But because this is an introductory work, it is probably inappropriate to expect such things in this kind of treatment. The beginner who wants to develop a good working knowledge of NT scholarship from an evangelical perspective will likely be quite satisfied with what they find in here.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Provocative.......2006-02-27

In this new edition of Intro to the NT Carson and Moo have significantly improved the work they initially published with Leon Morris (who has since passed away). The chapters are reorganized, the margins are wider, and the material has expanded to include the contribution of works published since the first edition. Having used both editions for coursework and personal study, I find the second edition far superior. While the layout of the first edition was doable, the second is much roomier and suitable for study. More than all these considerations, the authors superbly point the reader to Christ, to become like him. I have been challenged not only academically as I've read this work, I have been also been convicted spiritually.

5 out of 5 stars Just fantastic!.......2007-09-14

Wow! What a wonderful way to get to know God's word better! This book really helps people create a framework on which to hang biblical history, prophesy, and the message God is giving us through his Word so we can develop a deeper relationship with Him. Just cannot say enough great things about this book or Koinonia House, it's publisher, in general.

5 out of 5 stars This book really started something..........2007-06-14

I was intrigued when I saw the title so I got the book. I read it in two days and have bought copies for several people. My parents liked it so well, they ordered the DVD version and are meeting with their friends once a week and watching this. We've also started listening to Chuck Missler's daily podcast on our ipods and we're reading his study of Genesis. He takes the Bible very, very literally and explains how everything is exactly as it is written and what it means. We are very much drawn to the logical side of Christianity and not so much the emotional side. This is right up our alley!

5 out of 5 stars Missler Rocks.......2007-05-07

This man is so excited about the bible that it gets you going to read and check out his facts and conclusions. We have purchased and read several different bible versions in print and audio to check out his conclusions. Some of his conclusions can be debated but most of the time he got it right if you dig enough.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic overview.......2007-04-30

Chuck Missler provides a fantastic overview of the entire Scriptures in this book. I learned so much from just his "hour" sessions. The only "problem" for me was it left me wanting more info! (Which I guess is not really a problem at all!) Good book from a summary standpoint, and provides a good launch point for in-depth Bible study. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your Law" Psalm 119:18.......2006-06-23

Wow. Most of my life I would've said the Bible was my all-time favorite book, but out of obligation (as a Christian, I thought it had better be). In reality, while I did enjoy the Book, I didn't understand many parts of it, and really didn't know it in depth.

That has all changed. I read Chuck Missler's book, Learn the Bible in 24 Hours, about a year ago, and it set me off on an exciting path of discovery and knowledge. Three of the 'themes' that Missler repeatedly hits on, that I have taken with me every step of this journey, are these:

1) as one can look at nature and not help but be awed by its power, beauty and syncronicity, and know that a Creator had to be behind it, so can one look at the Holy Scriptures and come to the same conclusion. Seeing the syncronicity of the Bible (how upon deep investigation, seeming contradictions come to purposeful insight, its many patterns and inter-connectedness), the beauty of the Bible (in its behind the scenes details and imagery, and beauty of the Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic languages), and the power of the Bible (to relevantly apply to our lives today and change them in amazing ways!), one can only come to realize that a Higher Power is behind it. This truly is the Word of God.

2)Acts 17:11, 'the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they eagerly studied the Law everyday to see if what Paul said was true'. Missler applies this principle to his readers, saying 'Acts 17:11 tells you to not listen to what Chuck Missler tells you, but rather look it up in the Bible on your own. Be a Scripture student!'. (I love that!)

3) this will be an expensive lesson for you. Not in the cost of the book, but in the cost of your preconceived notions. Many ideas I had as a kid from Sunday School about the Bible are not exactly accurate, and Missler unabashedly points them out.

This book led me to his website, khouse.org, to purchase more material from him, including a CDrom study of Revelation, with over 30 hours of info. He has a dry sense of humour and a thorough understanding of what he's talking about. I highly recommend this book, and other material from Missler, for Christian, seeker and sceptic. An eye-opening book!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of study information.......2007-05-13

If you want an indepth study Encountering the New Testament is the one. I have an older PC and cannot get the new CD to come up. I'm not good at this. I need to send this book back and get the older CD if that is possible. The material is excellent and I recommend it to every Bible student.

4 out of 5 stars Simple but Thorough.......2007-05-09

I found this to be a very nice overview of the New Testament. It contains many photographs, maps, and other visuals that break up the text. This was the required textbook for my graduate NT Survey class, but I would consider it more appropriate for undergrad or even high school. If you are looking for something meaty, I would say this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a pleasant, sweeping survey of the NT, then you will likely enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and informative.......2007-04-12

The layout of the chapters and the way the material is written makes this book informative but very easy to understand. The CD wasn't really anything special and I haven't found any use for it.
Overall, I would suggest that this book would be useful for any student or person wanting a good overview of the NT.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to the NT.......2007-02-23

If you're a pastor, seminary student, or a layperson who needs a good, informative, and easy to read introduction to the New Testament then this book will be perfect for you. Many NT introductions/surveys that are out there are either 1) too technical and academic, or 2) liberal/modernist. This introduction is solidly evangelical, easy to understand, and academic enough for even the novice biblical scholar.

The strength of the book is that it does not survey each of the books in the New Testament chapter by chapter but by topics of significance in each book. For instance, when the authors talk about the message of Galatians they do not discuss what each of the 6 chapters discusses but about what Paul says about the nature of the gospel, law and grace, etc. (though Acts is an exception). Pretty much everything is covered regarding each book (authorship, date, place of writing, etc.).

Another feature of the book that will attract more novice pastors and students of the Bible is the colourful pictures that are abundantly printed in the book. Though some may find this comical, I think it added to the charm of this book. Pictures, graphs, maps, etc. help readers understand the background of each of the NT books better.

Finally, one other thing I really liked about this book is that the authors discuss side-issues related to the NT. The chapters on NT criticism (chap. 10), the historical Jesus Christ controversies (chaps. 8 and 12), and the teachings of Paul the Apostle (chap. 17) are well written, informative, and orthodox. I would say that these chapters alone are worth about half of the price of the book alone. Sure, the authors could have written more deeply on these chapters but the intended audience demanded that they do not go too deeply in these matters.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book for those who want a better understanding of the NT books. Though it is not that scholarly and deep, it is still good enough for what it intends and many students of the Bible will find rich information that will greatly help in their personal spiritual growth and ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-14

This book is easy to use, and has a lot of things to make it easier to read and comprehend the material. I haven't found a use for the CD though, its just kinda' neat. I highly recommend this book for anyone studying the history of the New Testament, and learning the facts surrounding it.

Book Description

This lucid introduction approaches the New Testament from a consistently historical and comparative perspective, emphasizing the rich diversity of the earliest Christian literature. Rather than styling away from the critical problems presented by these books, Ehrman addresses the historical and literary challenges they pose and shows why scholars continue to argue over such significant issues as how the books of the New Testament came into being, who produced them, what they mean, how they relate to contemporary Christian and non-Christian liteature, and how how they came to be collected into a canon of Scripture. Distinctive to this study is its emphasis on the historical, literary, and religious milieu of the Greco-Roman world, including early Judiasm. As part of its historical orientation, this text also discusses works by other Christian writers who were roughly contemporary with the New Testament, such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Apocalypse of Peter, the letters of Ignatius. Instead of simply setting forth scholarly views without explanations, Ehrman includes the evidence of scholars that have found persuasive for their views, engaging students and demonstrating why scholars have taken the positions they have. Ideal for undergraduate and seminary classes in the New Testament, Biblical Studies, and Christian Origins, The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings, Second Edition, is an accessible, clearly written introduction that encourages students to consider the historical issues surrounding these writings. The book is equally appealling to the wide non-academic readership interested in the Bible and the historical Jesus. Ehrman's The New Testament and Other Writings: A Reader serves as an ideal companion to this text. Features new to the second edition include expanded material covering Jesus, and the addition of boxes throughout addressing numerous topics, including alternative approaches to the historical Jesus and additional material covering women. The new edition also includes a color photo insert.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Qualified Very Good.......2007-05-07

Dr. Ehrman gave me a good review/update. I needed this very much as I earned my degree from seminary in 1958 and so much has happened since then. The book was very readable; it was in tended for his students. I appreciated his bibliography. As an historical overview it does not cover all the material that is necessary for a rounded education. Sometimes his conservative Christian theology creeps in to his evaluation of material. I find his insistance that Jesus is an apocalyptic prophet is unconvincing, and it pervades a good deal of his findings of other New Testament books. That John the Baptist was apocalyptic and that the early Christians had among them people who were apocalyptic is not proof of Jesus' position. I feel it is possible, but nopt probable. Read Crossan or Funk for another view.

5 out of 5 stars General Comments.......2006-11-10

The book provides a wealth of background information on the New Testament and New Testament Apocrypha from a strictly historical perspective.
Bart. Ehrman is clearly a master of his subject which he treats from a stictly orthodox point of view.

It is not a "commentary", i.e. it does not take the books verse by verse, and it avoids drawing theological conclusions.

It is a book which needs to be read and not merely used for an occasional references.

It would very useful to1 students who are just beginning a course on theology.

Bart Ehrman is clearly a master of this subject.

5 out of 5 stars The New Testament: A Historic Introduction to the Early Christian Writings.......2006-11-03

A clear writen explanation of the New Testament writings. A Historical interpretation of copies of pocies and copis of NT writings, a proces in time, centuries in the making. Prf. Ehrman is one of the best in this studies.

4 out of 5 stars A good readable text.......2006-03-17

When studying the New Testament, it is helpful to have a resource such as Ehrman's book. It is clearly written, interesting, and informative. I can highly recommend it for students of the New Testament.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical explanation of the NT.......2006-03-10

Ehrman explains the New Testatment clearly from a historical point of view. He does not offer "faith-buster" arguments but takes all sides of the argument into consideration. This is extremely helpful while reading the New Testament, since it explains many of the nuances and wordings that you may not have otherwise understood or picked up. Even if you're not reading the New Testament, Ehrman gives you a strong understanding of the historical context of the New Testament, the differences and similarities among the Gospels, the possible rationales and theories behind those discrepancies, etc. Ehrman is not a difficult read and is actually quite fascinating, particularly for those who never considered Christianity in a historical light before.

Book Description

Several distinctives set this volume apart from other introductions to the Old Testament: - It is thoroughly evangelical in its perspective. - It emphasizes "special introduction" -- the study of individual books. -It interacts in an irenic spirit with the historical-critical method. - It features high points of research history and representative scholars rather than an exhaustive treatment of past scholarship. - It deals with the meaning of each book, not in isolation but in a canonical context. - It probes the meaning of each book in the setting of its culture. With an eye on understanding the nature of the Old Testament historiography, An Introduction to the Old Testament offers the reader a solid understanding of three key issues: historical background, literary analysis, and theological message.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent concise overview.......2007-08-02

Professor's Dillard and Longman's Introduction to the Old Testament is an outstanding resource for understanding the literary, theological, and historical background of every Old Testament book. It is evangelical in its perspective, yet interacts with historical - cricial methods of interpretation that have been prominent over the past 100 + years or so.

A typical overview of each Old Testament book will start with an overview, useful commentaries and articles for each book, the historical background (date, author, and purpose), a literary analysis of the structure of the book, its theological message and how it applies to the New Testament.

The reader of the book will find an outstanding reference book for understanding and studying the individual books of the Old Testament. A real strength of this book is its description of the literary style of a book and what that means for the reader. Yet, the authors warn wisely that while it is important to take into account the book's literary context for the reader, the importance of understanding a particular Old Testament book, the importance of placing literary context within the historical context is paramount.

The authors make solid use of previous scholarship in their introductions for each book, even wisely dividing what is useful from the neo-orthodox and critical scholars and what is not.

This reference book will be of great use to ministers, lay teachers and the general student of the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-08

This is an excellent book for those who are studying the Old Testament.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and Scholarly!.......2006-10-30

This volume should be in every serious student of the OT library. Pastors especially should delve into this concise yet reasonable volume.

I highly recommend this volume.

4 out of 5 stars Brief summary .......2006-01-31

An excellent, informative overview of cursory introductory matters. OT introduction is quite a mindfield; however, Dillard and Longmand present a well-informed discussion. It is brief often on issues of dating and authorship, which makes this an excellent "first grab" off the shelf when a question arises. The volume is probably worth double its asking price for the literary analysis. This volume takes into account literary compentency and provides genre discussion (thanks to the illustrious Tremper Longman's coauthorship). All in all each student of the Bible needs a basic OT introduction; this is an excellent choice for the reader of today.

5 out of 5 stars A new spin on intro's.......2003-12-18

I was much pleased when I bought this intro to the Old Testament. In short, Dillard and Longman have done the church and teh believing community a great service by providing a scholarly and evangelical introduction that is not afraid to tackle the hard questions of the Bible.

They divide each section of the introduction into Historical/literary/Theological message/Approaching the New Testament. As to one reviewer commenting that this is very biased, I actually think that this was quite objective. Longman analyzes the prevailing critics presuppositions and then provides a logical counterpart. And also, they are (while remaining robustly evangelical) more balanced in their conclusion than other evangelical scholars (cf. Gleason Archer for a passionate, well written, if a little biased example).

In my eyes, this books greatezt strengths were its incorporating the theological message and approaching the New Testament into each book. The Bible then comes alive. Its weakness is similar to many other scholarly works, it could get overly teachnical at times. Overall, a well organized intro.
