Book Description

At some point everyone asks the question: What happens when we die? Robert J. Grant, a popular writer, lecturer, and researcher in many areas of contemporary spirituality, offers a dramatic and encouraging look at the realms beyond physical death.

The Place We Call Home is filled with the personal stories of those who have experienced the other side, either through death, communications from those who have died, or near-death experiences. These stories illuminate the answers to questions about messages from dead loved ones, the light-filled realms of the afterlife, and the real meaning of the "shadowlands."

This is a hopeful and inspiring look at the dimension of life beyond the illusion of death and celebrates the eternal nature of the human soul.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, wonderfully written.......2006-11-05

Grant is published by ARE Press, as are other authorities on Cayce.
His writing style is clear and interesting, and his books are anecdotal and entertaining, as well as informative .

He is one of five people who spent five years reading every single Cayce reading in the library of the ARE, and putting it on CD. That means if Cayce said it, Grant read it.

This makes him one of the foremost authorities on Cayce, today.

One does not need to be a student of Cayce, or interested in his foundation to enjoy this book. It is for anyone seeking answers to life after death.
I encourage you to give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2005-05-09

In the last few years I have read many spiritual books, and this is now one of my favorites.

The author draws on the readings of Edgar Cayce, as well as the views of several others, to discuss the realms that await us after death. A great asset of this book is that it shows how our thoughts and beliefs will actually impact the realm we find ourselves in upon death. For instance, although God does not damn anyone to a hellish afterlife, if someone believes that that is what they will find, they will. However, no one is stuck in a "negative" realm forever - there is always help available to those who are ready to give up their "earth-bound" thoughts.

The author also discusses the importance of prayer and meditation in preparing our souls for the afterlife, and he has included several exercises to help readers with the process.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in spirituality, the after-life, &/or Edgar Cayce's readings.

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FROM A VERY ADVANCED SOUL.......2004-04-20

The author, Rob Grant, is one of the foremost authorities on the Cayce readings, having studied, catalogued and put them on CD-ROM over a period of five years. Being personally acquainted with the author, I will tell you that he is one of the most advanced souls I've ever met -- genuinely loving, kind, compassionate, helpful, open-minded and throughly knowledgeable about the Cayce readings. His book, The Place We Call Home, reflects all of these. It is a book that gives much hope to the terminally ill, as well as to all seekers. He has written a concise book enlightening the reader with all Edgar Cayce said about passing over to the other side and what we will find there. I have also met George Ritchie, whose near death experience Rob Grants refers to in his book and who wrote a best seller back in the 1960 called "Return from Tomorrow," from which much about which we understand about death and dying came. These two men, more than anyone else, have convinced me of the reality of the afterlife and what one can expect to find there.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS WONDERFUL, HOPEFUL and LOVING BOOK!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lost someone they love or simply has a curiosity about what happens when we die. It answers so many questions that we all have regarding the afterlife. It gives hope to those of us who are grieving, that we will see our loved ones again. It's the best book I've read yet on the subject and it's my #1 recommendation. Well organized and written so that most readers can comprehend it. A great work! I'd give this book 6 stars if I could!

With Body Mind Spirit the leading figures in parapsychology finally break the self-imposed silence that has sequestered the field behind a wall of methodology and laboratory data. Researchers, including William Roll, Michael Grosso, and Rhea White, reveal how their work and that of their peers is a prelude to a transformation in the relationship between science and spirituality. While Body Mind Spirit doesn't spend time arguing for the validity of paranormal phenomena, it is no less important than any experimental test data in its efforts to crack Western dogma that has relegated science to the material world and designated the church as sole proprietor of the spiritual realm. The paradigm presented by these authors opens the door to scientific exploration of a milieu that transcends the boundaries set by mainstream science.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent mind challenger in the study of PSI.......2003-01-03

I ordered this book for myself as a Christmas gift, knowing my wish list might not be profilled. I had read previous books by and edited with Dr. Tart. This book presents a number of challenging articles written by scholars about parapsychology. I read the book as a cataylst in the study of the possibility of souls. There seems to be a number of media celerity mediums who claim there is a conscious mind and personality survival of death. They are helping people with grief and at the same time becoming millionaires.

So this is the background in which I read this book. I was most intrigued with William Rolls ruminations about a long soul rather than a personality survival. However his reasons for discounting personality survival seemed to me a bit premature. Roll states since mediums have never been able to get lock combinations or phrases from the deceased when only the deceased knew these phrases or numbers before hand, proves the personality and memory die with the brain. I say, wait ! When we come into life language (words) and numbers are concepts which we learn. They are abstractions and the brain does store these, but after death is it not possible our consciousness and individuality still may survive ? Although the memory secures language and numbers it may die with the body. Perhaps memory, if such exists, after death, could be an ability to view situations in past, present and perhaps future. No numbers or language is required for such a mind. We don't need to assume the mind is identical after death as it was in life for consciousness to survive.

So you can see this book has me thinking, and it will you as well. Happy readings.

5 out of 5 stars Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituali.......2001-07-03

Author and scientist Charles T. Tart presents his essays and those of ten other researchers in Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituality. He describes his book as "a detailed exploration of the spiritual implications that can be drawn from modern scientific research in parapsychology." Tart leads with an essay outlining the current scientific evidence, stating that "using the best kind of scientific methodology, the human mind has occasional abilities to transcend space and time that are totally inexplicable in terms of the material world." This sets the theme for the remainder of the book.

Other authors look at subjects like the relationship between religion and consciousness, the existence of God, intuition and psi, life after death, and channeling.

Psychologist and parapsychologist William Braud writes that "parapsychological findings can be useful to those on a spiritual path as they can provide a certain degree of confidence and trust that at least some of the processes and concepts encountered are 'real' in a more traditional sense and are not delusions, projections, or misinterpretations."

Philosophers and researchers have long debated the split between science and spirituality. Body Mind Spirit provides evidence that, if read objectively, may finally start to heal that split.

4 out of 5 stars Seriously Enlightening.......2001-06-02

Charles T. Tart's "Body Mind Spirit" is a reasonably satisfying exploration of metaphysical matters. Eleven parapsychologists explain their beliefs about psychic phenomena and spiritual hypotheses. There's no hype here: these are serious scientists doing their best to test rare and subtle effects. Experimental parapsychologists claim to have proven that people can sometimes communicate nonphysically (telepathy), perceive distant objects or events (clairvoyance), foretell the future (precognition), and influence quantum events (psychokinesis). One can disagree, of course, but the experiments can be studied in parapsychology texts by Edge, Krippner, Kurtz, and Wolman (listed here in footnotes and a lengthy bibliography). Other parapsychologists try to rule out the above four influences when they study out-of-body and near-death experiences, past-life recall, apparitions, channeling, poltergeists, and dozens of other reported phenomena. As William Braud says, "A great deal of what is encountered along the spiritual path is quite beyond the reach of current science. Here, one must be armed with trust, faith, hope, love, discernment, and a tolerance for ambiguity and for contraries, rather than with the feelings of safety, certainty, familiarity, and understanding that science can provide." One of Tart's conclusions, after decades of such study, is that something spiritual probably does survive death, but that little of a separate, body-shaped personality is likely to survive for long. William G. Roll argues that souls attach not to our bodies so much as to our families, posessions, and all that we value and protect, overlapping with other such souls. I still don't know what to believe, but I had fun reading the book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better recent books in this field.......2000-03-11

I read just about everything in this field, and this is one of the more serious and thought-provoking of the recent works. It brings together a variety of perspectives from serious researchers. None of the chapters (each by a different author) was a waste of my time, and several were excellent. In answer to the previous reviewer, I don't believe the intent of this book is to "convince" anyone of the reality of psychical phenomena -- I believe the intent is to provoke thought as to how these phenomena might be explained and what they may mean. The entire problem with modern psychical research is that it has moved away from studying the phenomena on their own terms and has tried to cater to scientific materialism by imposing laboratory controls, an effort which has proved largely (but not entirely) fruitless. Anyway, this book is not aimed at close-minded skeptics (if it was, it would be published by Prometheus -- right?). It is aimed at those whose minds are open enough to take the evidence at face value and consider what it may mean. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence (of which there is plenty) -- but they also demand extraordinary investigation and extraordinarily serious thought, efforts which the debunkers seem unwilling to make.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional clarity throughout ... brilliant ..........1999-05-16

... clear and to the point, BMS encapsulates the very essence of the current Consciousness debate with regards to the existence of a Spiritual Reality alongside the acknowledged Objective and Subjective Realitys. It pulls together some very clear and practical approaches to building a framework that will bridge the gap between contemporary science and religion, as they stand separated at the moment ... inspired ...

This deck is not a standard tarot meant for divination, and thus can be difficult to use well for that purpose. For a practicing Celtic shaman, they are indispensible for planning and focusing a journey into the Otherworlds.

If you are a Celtic shaman, this deck can become a truly sacred object. Those seeking to use it as a regular tarot should have some tarot experience first; even then, it may not work as you expect it to.

Happily, they are set out to provide a full reading. Also, the artwork on them is bright and energetic. Not if you are feeling in a meditative mood

Approaching the near-death experience from the standpoint of an objective observer reporting quantifiable experiences, Evelyn Elsaesser Valarino endows On the Other Side of Life with credibility that is missing from many books on this subject. Valarino's interviews provide access to the insights of scientists, doctors, and everyday people that both researchers and general readers will find valuable. At the same time, these dialogues with such a diverse group of reputable scholars serve as a foundation for bridging the gap between science and spirituality.

Book Description

With testimonials from people who have lived through Near-Death Experiences as well as research and opinions from a multidisciplinary panel of prestigious scholars, On the Other Side of Life offers a balanced look at these most mysterious experiences and the science and theology behind them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An advanced book on NDEs........2005-08-25

This is an excellent book. It contains a review of the NDE phenomenon and then moves on to some quite advanced ideas. Most of it is written in dialogue form, although these dialogues take the form of question and answer sessions most of the time, rather than conversations as such.

The book starts with some introductory remarks and an analysis of the NDE, followed by two interviews with people who have had NDEs. Then there is an interview with Kenneth Ring, which is nearly 80 pages long and contains much interesting material.

The next five chapters (half the book, about 150 pages) set this book apart. They consist of discussions with a number of scientists, a theologian and a philosopher, and they contain a wide range of fascinating ideas. Some of these attempt to explain aspects of NDEs, whereas others show the role NDEs play in ideas developed by the interviewees in their own disciplines.

There are no concessions made to beginners in these discussions, and some people might find them hard to follow. As I've said, this is a more advanced book on NDEs than most.

All the interviewees appear to be French, and their ideas might be hard to find out about otherwise, because their books don't appear to have been translated into English.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of NDEs.......2001-03-23

Although only one side of the issue is discussed (in support of NDEs), this book is a must-read for anyone interested in logical approach to an analysis of NDEs. Valarino interviews scientists from different fields (biology, physics, etc.) and discusses the scientific evidence they have found in support of NDEs, as well as some of the recent theories that have been formulated concerning the nature of the soul (or consciousness) and life after death. The content of the book deserves five stars, although I will agree the format of the book could use just a little work.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of the NDE phenomenon.......1999-08-25

Ms. Elsaesser-Valarino takes us through a thorough analysis of the Near Death Experience (NDE) from a number of different perspectives: Philosophy, religious, physics, biology, and psychology. This book is an excellent, in-depth look at the various possibilities of NDE's. I have never read such a complete analysis of this fascinating phenomenon. I recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in NDE's.

The reasons I did not rate this book with 5-stars are:

1 - The analysis would be even more complete had it included an analysis of someone who does not believe that NDE's necessarily imply a life-after-death. Everyone interviewed leans on the side of probability that NDE's imply life-after-death. An interview with someone like a Susan Blackmore would have been very interesting and added to the objectivity of the author's position.

2 - The interview/dialog format used in most of the book is interesting, but does not lend itself to explanation, especially when the discussion get very complex and bogged down in technical details of physics, biology, etc.. A more traditional approach might have enabled the author to more fully define complex terms and constructs in a more effective way.

3 - The two testimonies I believe could have been chosen better. The ones used are marginal and uninteresting.

5 out of 5 stars The Kundalini Book........2006-04-01

For those of you with a passing interest or a passion for Kundalini this is the book to read. It covers every aspect of Kundalini and is written by a Western author so it is quite easy reading.

Also anyone having any kind of Spiritual Awakening should read this book.

Even though the books title doesn't show it, this is the best book I have read on Kundalini so far.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best Kundalini books........2002-07-17

The wide scope of this book makes it a good synthesis of evolution phenomenons. Clear and open minded, a clear deep solid work.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable about kundalini processes.......1999-02-17

This book is easy to miss as a kundalini guide because its title does not indicate this aspect of its content. The author, an MD, has assisted large numbers of people in kundalini processes and has a wealth of information to offer that is very valuable to anyone wanting/needing to learn about a kundalini experience. She is a medial doctor with a vast knowledge of spiritual phenomena. In my experience, people with spontaneous arisings are helped a great deal by this perspective which integrates Eastern and Western understandings.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic reference on Kundalini awakening........1998-08-21

A Father Shore is an engaging personal, clinical, and scholarly report on Kundalini phenomena.

Though both Dr. Yvonne Kason and Teri Degler have nominal Christian backgrounds, as of this writing they appear to be influenced more by New Age and Hindu philosophy than by Scriptural Christianity in their treatment of spiritual awakening and personal transformation experiences. I recommend their book as a basic, practical introduction to the physiological, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social factors associated with Kundalini. But the authors appear to have lost their moorings in the Biblical doctrines of creation, sin, redemption, and restoration. The book is adrift with doctrines of evolution and reincarnation.

The reader must decide whether the human body was created by God to be a temple of God or whether it is a product of cosmic evolution now acquiring god-like powers. If evolution, then self-realization is the ultimate goal. Never mind that the Second Law of Thermodynamics dictates devolution and death for everything in this physical universe, unless information and energy are added from a higher-dimensional source. If creation, then as Jesus said we must be born again from above in order to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Dr. Kason's adult near death experience and Ms. Degler's adolescent spiritual awakening have much in common with what the Bible calls being "baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5). In that Kundalini is known as "serpent power," it is unfortunate that the leaders of the Church of Canada had not taught the authors how to distinguish more clearly between the Word of God and the lies of the devil. Jesus teaches about kundalini as "streams of living water" (John 7:39). We have to decide whether to employ this God-given human potential in the service of Christ or Antichrist, God or the devil.

The book's teachings and conclusions about the importance of a balanced life style for "healthy spiritual transformation" are of great value. But the universalism of the final sentence concerning "a bright and glorious future for us all" denies the reality of evil. To save those who love God and one another from the devastations of sin and death, Jesus Christ must come again in power and great glory to destroy those who are destroying the earth and establish the kingdom of God. A bright and glorious future for the children of God to be sure--"But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie" (Revelation 22:15).

Mr. Singh lived the life of an ascetic in the Himalayas in the 1940's (not exactly sure about the date) and seems to have left some years later with a sense of clarity. Later he was involved in responding to the poverty in postwar India. In the 1950's he met Mr. J Krishnamurti in the USA who told him, "There are no problems apart from the mind." The externals continued to have less and less hold of him until he met Helen Schuman, the Scribe of A Course in Miracles and his life was transformed. Helen encouraged him to teach the Course and he did for many years before retirement.

The true student of the Course will have to confront his own thought and this will take real dedication and honesty. Mr. Singh's words will not let the student hide from this challenge.

4 out of 5 stars When you-the student-are ready, this book can help you grow.......2001-08-22

I have explored the world within me for most of my adult life. Among all the studies I have examined, my least favorite has been tarot. Diane Toland has changed my mind, as she offers a fresh perspective on an ancient notion. Tarot generally offers "insights and explanations" of the various cards; even the best readers I have gone to, apply their insights to pre-established explanations, which, although not always the same, tend to be in proximity to the rest. Ms Toland leaves her opinions out. She describes the cards, the 22 major arcana, in descriptive rather than analytical terms, and she challenges the reader [student] to interpret the symbols and relate them to his or her own life. That is a major plus. Another is how the reader is asked to use the cards. Not as oracles, but as stepping stones to create one's own affirmations and actions. As the author of a "quest book," I see "Inner Pathways to the Divine" as a quest--a journey within--as the author does. The notion of self-exploration is appealing to me, and I would recommend this book to anyone whose life is not exactly what they want it to be, professionally or personally. It is simplistic in style and language, perfect for those who have never taken a trip inside themselves. Even experienced travelers will find the book charming, if not useful. How can one not benefit from a person whose raison d'etre is helping others? But don't just read the book. Too many "self-helpers" are well read, but make the reading an intellectual experience, often reciting the dozens of books they have read on personal development. If you want to succeed in changing your life, "DOING" must replace "THINKING." Here the author shines, providing the student with guidelines to create their own specific self-exploration and affirmations and actions. As an art lover, I particularly enjoyed her suggestion to employ art at the end of each chapter, and I whole-heartedly endorse her belief that, "Art touches the soul." More than a book on tarot, "Inner Pathways..." is a challenge to pay attention to one's life, making everything in our lives our teachers, when we, the students, are ready.

4 out of 5 stars This book is essential reading for Tarot initiates!.......2001-06-26

My favorite line in Diane Toland's insightful little Tarot book, "Inner Pathways to the Divine", made me laugh out loud and reads as follows, "Relegating the tarot cards to the role of fortune-telling is like using a samurai sword to make a sandwich." Spiritual warriors unite! In my opinion, her words ring true to the deeper intent of the Tarot's message, meaning and purpose.

Toland has devised a book which takes the reader through an experience of the Tarot's Major Arcana, incorporating the knowledge of each archetype into a personal relationship for the initiate. The reader is encouraged to explore each major arcana card through personal feelings, associations, and actions taken in the reader's life. Focus is maintained with an affirmation unique to the message of each tarot card. The lesson of each card is integrated further with personal expression when readers select a song, art, literature or film that relates to each archetype. Finally, a Tarot Mandala is created utilizing images that symbolize each Major Arcana card to the reader.

In this writer's opinion, most Tarot books read like recipe books with ready-made interpretations of each card which appeal to the mind's search for a quantified answer. This approach addresses the person from the neck up with insight, but does not allow for the querant's full body awareness and integration of the energy represented by that card. It leaves out the initiate's personal material, intuition, and shuns the great mystery with all it's unanswerable possibilities.

The Tarot is meant to be a wholistic experience. In order to make a lasting, and, possibly, life changing impression, the querant needs to have a personal experience of the card and it's lesson. Toland's book guides the reader through this experience with her compassionate wisdom. This book is highly recommended for those who wish to dip into the esoteric pool of wisdom deep within one's own soul.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written on the Major Arcana.......2001-05-30

What a unique and practical book on the Major Arcana! It provides detailed and comprehensive descriptions on each of the major cards. What is really unique and enjoyable about this book is the fact that the author goes even deeper after describing each card by adding sections such as "self-exploration" which asks the reader questions that spark your intuitive, creative and emotional side to see yet more different levels each card can take you in your own understanding. Also included is an affirmation that is a wonderful aid in bringing the card into meditation with you or to simply absorb the card energy affirmation exercise. "Action" and "Art" segments are also discussed. A very spiritual and warm read for those interested in exploring the major arcana more personally and in depth or for those beginning with Tarot who really want a solid foundation in understanding each card. Although this book is illustrated with the Rider Waite, which is why it gets a 4 star as opposed to a 5 star, although I presume because of the popularity of the Rider Waite deck, this is why the illustrations will appeal to a certain majority of rider waite deck owners/users. I think it could most definitely be used, irregardless of what you deck you have if you forgo the intro description of each illustrated rider waite image. The self exploration, the affirmation, action and art(creating your own tarot mandala) sections are worthy enough to get this book on these offerings themselves. Hopefully the author will consider creating another book on the minors to go with this one, as it would be of great interest to tarot study enthusiasts and tarot book lovers/collectors. Highly recommend ~*~

Diane Toland has come up with a great method for self-discovery with this book. Using the Tarot's mentors as references to the different aspects of the self, we are able to take a good look at our strengths and weaknesses. An easy and enjoyable book to read, Diane presents a step-by-step plan to improve ourselves with what we have discovered. You don't have to know anything about the Tarot to benefit from this book, and it doesn't matter what your religious beliefs are. Instead of using the Tarot as a "fortune-telling" device, Diane presents it as a tool for us to create a better reality for ourselves. The affirmations are great, too. Highly recommended.

      Book Description

It is no longer enough to be a learning orgranization. Our efforts to re-engineer and deconstruct human systems have left 'yearning' organizations in their wake - companies filled with staff who are eager, if not desperate, to find meaning in their existence and their work.

"Going Deep" is a powerful and penetrating book that reconnects readers to joy, meaning and spirituality in life and work. In particular it challenges leaders to understand that until they focus as much on "Why?" as they do on "How?" they will never release the full potential of their organization.

Percy presents an unusually insightful description of the inner spiritual life of an organization - and all organizations have one. There are six phases of spiritual development that all individuals and all organizations must journey through to reach meaning and fulfillment. The failure to do so results in irritation and anger.

Never before has a business book reached so deeply into the human soul - and with such humor. A must-read for all leaders intent on taking their organization to greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Taking Leadership Beyond Return on Equity and Market Share.......2006-07-08

Have you ever worked for an organization that held a launch meeting for an important new program? If so, you've probably had a hard time getting too worked up over making the shareholders richer or outselling a competitor you don't really think much of. There must be more to life and work! If you've had that thought, Going Deep is a good choice for you.

Ian Percy describes the individual and organizational journeys that can lead to creating a spiritual center for your life and that of an organization you lead. By reading about those way stations, you'll be able to better understand where you and your organization are today . . . and what's next!

The strength of this book comes in Mr. Percy's extraordinary emotional and spiritual intelligence which allow him to make interior journeys as easy to read about and understand as any travelogue about going to California for the first time. He is a natural story teller (either that or he hides his deliberations better than most) who makes reading about spiritual progress a joy.

My own experience has been that all organizations have an unstated spiritual purpose that motivates everyone to accomplish more of what matters. But this purpose is usually treated like it doesn't exist . . . or possibly even is a taboo subject. Bring that inspiration out into the open, and an emotional catharsis follows that encourages more explicit pursuit of spiritually inspired accomplishments. It's a lovely human experience to unleash all that caring and effectiveness. A lot of good things happen as well . . . both in individual lives and for the organization's stakeholders. With this book, I believe that these fundamental and essential impulses will have a better chance to move from the implicit to the explicit.

      Bravo, Mr. Percy!

5 out of 5 stars A POM (Peace of Mind) Masterpiece.......2002-01-23

Beyond "When Bad Things Happen to Good People," this work is a must read for anyone seeking a perspective on how to leave the myth of "security" behind, especially when sailing into unchartered waters. Percy's shared experiences and inspiring insights are like a salve for those wounded and lost souls, who are both driven and tossed about by the uncertain currents of today's world of work. "Going Deep" compels readers to do just that, by examining their own lives for meaning and direction.

Who would have thought "Soul & Business" could be used in relationship with each other? What a visionary masterpiece "Going Deep" is.

Had the pleasure of being in attendance at one of Mr. Percy's speaking engagements and picked up the book. His 11 Commandments of business are truly inspired.

Going Deep is the "Power of Positive Thinking" for the new age of business.

Going Deep, offers a thought-provoking exploration of how we create meaning and soul in our workplaces. I was privileged to review a pre-press manuscript. Highlighter in hand, I found myself circling thoughts on many pages, laughing, pondering, nodding and relishing the most sensitive yet practical leadership I've read in years. Through Ian, a provocative international consultant and facilitator, you'll get first-hand insight into what happens when individuals move through "the great shuddering" into an engagement with life through work.
