Book Description

Fragments of a Great Secret have been found in the oral traditions, in literature, in religions and philosophies throughout the centuries. For the first time, all the pieces of The Secret come together in an incredible revelation that will be life-transforming for all who experience it.

In this book, you'll learn how to use The Secret in every aspect of your life -- money, health, relationships, happiness, and in every interaction you have in the world. You'll begin to understand the hidden, untapped power that's within you, and this revelation can bring joy to every aspect of your life.

The Secret contains wisdom from modern-day teachers -- men and women who have used it to achieve health, wealth, and happiness. By applying the knowledge of The Secret, they bring to light compelling stories of eradicating disease, acquiring massive wealth, overcoming obstacles, and achieving what many would regard as impossible.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't like.......2007-10-11

I purchased the audio book since I am in my car most of the time being a mom and running around town. I actually threw one of the CD's out the window. I didn't like this theory. I felt it left out "GOD" in this whole picture.
Not for me.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret.......2007-10-11

This is an eye opener...a must read. I find myself referring back to the book to absorb as much as I can. Who would have known? Get this one for your library, it's a wonderful investment!

3 out of 5 stars The Secret Refined.......2007-10-10

On Page 55 in The Secret, you will read about the difference between taking inspired action (which feels effortless), versus acting to "make something happen"(which feels like a struggle). Life is described here as a flowing river, and you can either go with the flow of the Universe . . . or against it. I love this metaphor, but it is not original with The Secret (or the author of this section, Bob Doyle). In 2004 I read an entire book on this very metaphor by Steven Lane Taylor. It's called Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow. I think it greatly refines the concepts in The Secret, and I recommend it as a follow-up to this book. It is especially helpful if you want to know how "God" fits into the picture.

1 out of 5 stars Whatever...duh.......2007-10-10

Est, the program, Mary Ann Williamson... got your money yet?
This one will too.
Life isn't that simple, is it?

1 out of 5 stars A steaming pile..........2007-10-09

I'm just adding this review to try to bring down the rating. Seriously, how did this steaming pile of .... rate 3 1/2 stars? If I could rate it a negative, I would. Not only is "The Secret" worthless, it's actively harmful.

Book Description

The project that captured a nation's imagination.

The instructions were simple, but the results were extraordinary.

"You are invited to anonymously contribute a secret to a group art project. Your secret can be a regret, fear, betrayal, desire, confession, or childhood humiliation. Reveal anything -- as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before. Be brief. Be legible. Be creative."

It all began with an idea Frank Warren had for a community art project. He began handing out postcards to strangers and leaving them in public places -- asking people to write down a secret they had never told anyone and mail it to him, anonymously.

The response was overwhelming. The secrets were both provocative and profound, and the cards themselves were works of art -- carefully and creatively constructed by hand. Addictively compelling, the cards reveal our deepest fears, desires, regrets, and obsessions. Frank calls them "graphic haiku," beautiful, elegant, and small in structure but powerfully emotional.

As Frank began posting the cards on his website, PostSecret took on a life of its own, becoming much more than a simple art project. It has grown into a global phenomenon, exposing our individual aspirations, fantasies, and frailties -- our common humanity.

Every day dozens of postcards still make their way to Frank, with postmarks from around the world, touching on every aspect of human experience. This extraordinary collection brings together the most powerful, personal, and beautifully intimate secrets Frank Warren has received -- and brilliantly illuminates that human emotions can be unique and universal at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Totally engrossing.......2007-09-26

I bought this as a gift for my twenty-something brother. I started to glance through it a little before wrapping it, and ended up sitting with my nose in it for an hour. Really cool coffee-table book.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-07

An amazing book! Read it page for page and it's so hard to put down, great buy.

4 out of 5 stars Secrets shared are a wonderful thing........2007-09-05

Big time fan fot he website and love this collection of books. The honesty makes me laugh, cry and feel totally connected to others. A birlliant project.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-24

This book absolutely amazing and unique. Sure there are 3 books so far from him, all with the same postcard concept, but each book is direct and revealing. I found myself looking into my life and relationships and thinking that the post cards are saying and showing exactly what I felt/remember feeling. The pages are beautiful and colorful along with the words and writing that somehow display exactly what the writer was feeling. Even if you only read a few pages every once in a while, it will ground and humble you, pick you up, and make you want to be a better person. Truly amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book, amazing video trailer to go along with it.......2007-08-16

I have been a fan of the Postsecret phenomenon since the first book came out. They are moving, and make one feel that you are not alone. Everyone has baggage. quirks. Human beings have alot going on. You must see the Book Trailer just posted on Youtube, it is inspirational, a work of art and makes you want to buy the books! Go to Youtube and search for Postsecret, and watch!! Its extraordinary!

4 out of 5 stars Filled with insights.......2007-09-05

As a fan of the cult show this is the book to read lots of theories about the symbolism and meaning of the show. A great read pack with insights.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting look into other's minds........2007-08-09

I think this project is amazing. After reading all of the books and getting the updates every Sunday from the website, I have come to realize that everyone has their own bag of crap to carry. It's a very interesting look into the minds of people and the secrets they carry around with them. Some funny, some sad. If you would like a book that is read in one sitting (everyone I have let see it has to look through the whole thing), this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-07-15

It's the reading equivalent to searching through someone's medicine cabinet. It'll make you cry and make you giggle. Ultimately, it will make you contemplate your own secrets!

5 out of 5 stars People Have Secrets Both Dark and Light.......2007-07-07

And secrets have power. It is a courageous and amazing thing to write down a secret and post it on a website. Some secrets are sweet, some are deep, and some are heartbreaking. But with each secret I read, I know that my secrets are not crazy. I'm just a normal person, like everyone else.

Amazon.com

At the beginning of 2005, Frank Warren launched a new blog called PostSecret as an experiment in community art, inviting strangers to mail him anonymous postcards that made art out of their innermost secrets and then posting a selection of the cards every week on his blog. Within a year, his blog was one of the five most popular in the world, and his first book, PostSecret, was one of the surprise bestsellers of 2005. My Secret is his second book, a collection of cards from teens and college students--none of which has been shown on the website--that carries the same emotional power and creativity that have made Warren's project a phenomenon.

We are featuring seven postcards from the book here: see two of them on this page, and click on the numbers below to see five more.

This book is classic, just like all of the other PostSecret Books. A must have for the PostSecret collector. You are not alone.

4 out of 5 stars It is nice to know others have secrets!.......2007-09-14

What a really cool way to express yourself! I know for a fact that letting go of a secret makes life a little easier sometimes...and to have the opportunity to see what others have let go of is pretty neat. I wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2007-08-23

This is an fascinating book filled with people's deepest secrets. It's beautiful to be able to open it, and feel as if hundreds of people have poured their hearts and creativity onto the pages. It's a thrill when you come across a secret and applies to you as well, makes you realize you aren't alone. Visually appealing, along with being the best kind of memoir, this book is a must have along with the other post secret books.

Book Description

In this short, powerful book, multimillionaire and bestselling author Steven K. Scott reveals King Solomon’s breakthrough strategies to achieve a life of financial success and personal fulfillment.

Steve Scott flunked out of every job he held in his first six years after college. He couldn’t succeed no matter how hard he tried. Then Dr. Gary Smalley challenged him to study the book of Proverbs, promising that in doing so he would achieve greater success and happiness than he had ever known. That promise came true, making Scott a millionaire many times over.

In The Richest Man Who Ever Lived, Scott reveals Solomon’s key for winning every race, explains how to resolve conflicts and turn enemies into allies, and discloses the five qualities essential to becoming a valued and admired person at work and in your personal life. Scott illustrates each of Solomon’s insights and strategies with anecdotes about his personal successes and failures, as well as those of such extraordinary people as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, and Steven Spielberg.

At once inspiring and instructive, THE RICHEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED weaves the timeless truths of one of our greatest works of literature into a detailed roadmap for successful living today.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Just read Proverbs.......2007-09-13

The book is redundant and contradictory of itself. First the author says he didn't follow Proverbs as a young man then he says because of following Proverbs as a young man things went his way. I commend the author's efforts and I believe to some degree he does live by The Good Book, but honestly I think we all know what the author wants you to do, and what the Man Upstairs wants you to do. I now read Proverbs daily. It is a wonderful thing to do and I've recommended it to many. Rather than buy this book go download Proverbs and start reading. If you are looking for a book that will take you about 3 hours to read that will ultimately tell you to read Proverbs about 100 times then read this book. Thank you for your time.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic Wisdom.......2007-08-13

This book definitely changes your perspective and causes you to reposition yourself concerning the promises and principles of God.

5 out of 5 stars A challenge with a promise........2007-07-25

After praying about what career advice to give his friend, Gary Smaller offered his friend Steve Scott a challenge in which he promised that if Steve would follow the advice, he would not only be successful, but would be a millionaire in 5 years. The challenge was to read a chapter of the proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters in proverbs, and most months have 31 days, he was instructed to read the chapter that corresponded to the day of the month. Steve took the advice and made good on the promise his friend gave him.

The book is based on the principals/lessons/advice from the Proverbs. It explores the meanings of certain passages and shows how to derive benefit from them. Steve shares some of his own experiences throughout.

Solomon was the wisest, richest man that ever was or will be. Seems like someone worth listening to and studying doesn't it?

This is a book that can make a positive difference in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-16

Great Book that discusses the benefit of not going alone but having other like minded individuals around you. Backs a lot of his thoughts/facts with scripture from the book of Proverbs. I actually read the book about a year ago and am currently re-reading it. Great book, great, easy, quick read.

5 out of 5 stars Finances by the Wisest Man.......2007-07-10

Great Book Sucess based on biblical principles We read it on a trip as a couple--enjoyed it!

4 out of 5 stars A Tool with Comprehensive Info in Form of Briefs.......2007-09-14

'Be Who You Are' provides an detailed look at the 16 Myers Briggs types. It is a highly useful tool for anyone who wants words to describe who he/she is. It promotes self-understanding through the opportunity to contrast and compare one's type with descriptions of other types.

On top of that, they add a description of how each Myers Briggs type develops over a life time... There is a pattern! This "life phase" section helps you understand your associate or friend. When you know his/her type and what life phase he/she is in, it really helps!

'Be Who You Are' is not a book for general readership, but is a gem for people setting a foundation for their careers and lives. As a tool, it needs to be studied, researched, and worked with, not just skimmed through. Not for shallow people seeking popular entertainment or a Glamor magazine questionnaire, although it reads easily and is fun to learn.

Myers Briggs is one tool of several that are needed to really understand yourself, your job, your career path, and your life. The Myers Briggs type is a great tool, and 'Be Who You Are' is an outstanding guide for that purpose. Highly recommended for people in transitions, confusion, or motivated to advance.

5 out of 5 stars Know what you are... automatically you'll do what you are.......2007-09-03

Career + self help + self awareness
1-test to know your type
2- more info about deeper type functions and type developments with examples.
3-detailed and long case studies about each type
4-also ways for people who are in doubt to verify their type.
although the book seems big but you can go through it fast if you are reading about one type or two.
an important point here is that the book WILL NOT TELL you to be an architect for example... -although it may suggest so- simply because a site architect is totally different from a conceptualizer architect or a detailer...

1 out of 5 stars Yet Another Briggs-Meyers Book (YABMB).......2007-08-14

I wish all Briggs-Meyers books used "Briggs-Meyers" in their titles so they could be distinguished from others. The abstract should come out and say that's what the book means by "Personality Type..." If it did, I must have missed it.

I was hoping for something deeper than a rehash of Briggs-Meyers.

5 out of 5 stars Initially daunting.......2007-07-17

When first I saw this book, I thought, "I will never be able to read this whole thing!" I was wrong. The writing flows easily and the book is well organized and easily understood. It has been most helpful in my journey of self-discovery.

4 out of 5 stars Helped my choose my major........2007-07-13

This book was really helpful. What made it different from other personality type books is the real world example. I could read one and say, "that's just like me!" or "that's not me at all". After I finished it, which didn't take very long, I knew what my strengths and weaknesses were. It even gave me a list of good jobs for people like me. For a college student who's trying to decide what they want to do career wise, this book helped seal the deal and choose a major. I highly suggest it to anyone who is unsure who they are or what they want to do.

This book continues the philosophy of his other publications: chronic inflammation (or the love of pro-inflammatory foods) is the root of all physiological evil. This book focuses on cellular rejuvenation, in particular, the need to protect the mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell and site for ATP production, as we all learned years ago in high school biology) from extensive and lethal DNA damage.

Dr. Denham Harman's free-radical theory of aging is now universally accepted to the point that food marketers have picked up on the hype of "antioxidants" (molecules that lend an electron to an excited free oxygen radical, thus stabilizing it and preventing oxidative damage to cells). In all the years my family has purchased boxes of Lipton black tea, we had never been informed until recently that we are in fact drinking in 105mg of Protective Antioxidants per serving. Dr. Perricone worked with Dr. Harman's free-radical theory and related it to his hypothesis that inflammation is the underlying cause of disease and aging.

I think that Dr. Perricone and Dr. Harman are far-sighted scientists/physicians, and now the rest of the medical world is backpedaling and accepting the free-radical and inflammation-underlying-disease theories. Dr. Perricone says that Dr. Harman's work went unnoticed and unappreciated for decades. Fortunately, Dr. Perricone had the foresight to evaluate and later champion this free-radical theory before it became common knowledge.

Another theme that Dr. Perricone comes back to time and time again is the need to control blood sugar levels, even if you are not diabetic. A diet high in refined, simple sugars will upset insulin levels and cause glycation (AKA cross-linking, sugar molecules attach to protein molecules, especially collagen, which in turn causes the previously flexible collagen to become rigid). Dr. Perricone recommends supplementing with cinnamon and niacin-bound chromium to regulate blood sugar levels. He gives us a scientific overview as to why these two supplements, one a spice we all love and the other a trace mineral, help our bodies maintain proper insulin function and normal blood sugar levels.

I try to follow his dietary and supplemental guidelines as much as my budget will allow. I am hardly in an economic position to spend several hundred dollars on supplements every month and eat completely organic. Thankfully, organic food is becoming more available to the point that Meijers (a major supermarket/retailer in the Midwest) has its own organic food line that is reasonably priced. (I hope this in no way means that organic standards are being watered down.) Dr. Perricone's own line of supplements is way out of my budget, but other vitamin companies offer similar products at a third or so of the price. His skin products are for the wealthy and A-list celebrities only. Fortunately, Reviva Labs offers its skin care version of the Perricone Trio (alpha lipoic acid, Vitamin C Ester, and DMAE) and peptides. Jason Organic has some great products too--I love Jason's Vitamin E oil blend as a moisurizer for both my skin and hair (used sparingly). I've been using EMU oil after reading rave Internet reviews of the stuff (Thunder Ridge). It's great for dry skin, joints, and sore muscles. My point being--you can take the essence of Dr. Perricone's advice and guidelines, but shop around for comparable products if you can't afford a huge investment in the Perricone Store.

Dr. Perricone differentiates cookware in the 7 Secrets, recommending porcelain-enameled cast iron and stainless steel while eschewing nonstick synthetic coating, Teflon, and aluminum cookware. I don't remember a discussion of cookware in his previous books. He devotes the remaining pages of his 7 Secrets to delicious-sounding recipes; a comprehensive list of foods that comprise the "Anti-Aging Kitchen;" food, supplements, and skin care resources; and references.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a self-help book, but less than it appears.......2007-05-29

Perricone's "secrets" amount to good nutrition, moderate exercise, and widely available and widely used anti-oxidant supplements. I see Perricone lecturing on PBS and people taking notes furiously as if it were some sort or revolutionary science he is promoting. It is not. It is a milidly intriguing Linus Pauling-esque theory that inflammation is the driving factor behind cellular aging and consequently that nutritional supplements can suppress the inflammation and stop the aging process. I don't fault him for promoting his theory, I just wonder why more people who should know better don't hear little warning bells going off when they read his very strong claims that could potentially be supported with real research but are not. They are not presented as theories in most of this work, they are presented as marketing claims for selling supplements.

The popularity of this material is not hard to explain. Perricone is not originally a vitamin peddler who was trying to build scientific credibility, he is a doctor who already had some credibility, presumably, then became a vitamin peddler. We are all impressed by a doctor who seems to be getting past drugs and surgery to look at health and wellness in a scientific way. Especially when he does a good job promoting a rosy vision of a future where aging is understood and life is prolonged. I give him credit for this just as so many others seem to do. But I am also not finding as much substance when I look more deeply at the details. I already knew a lot of the cellular chemistry about metabolism, so his discussions did not particulary hold me in awe as they seem to his PBS audiences. I was able to look more specifically at what what supposed to be his unique ideas.

Personally, when I examined his specific claims, I found this material to have very little technical depth, and that his use of biochemistry and cellular chemistry jargon throughout and constantly referring obscurely to this research or that study just clouds the fact that his most critical substantive claims are not directly supported anywhere.

There is no evidence that people live better orlonger lives when taking his expensive supplements, much less the more widely used versions of the same supplements, and yet there are a lot of veiled claims about him "doing research" and "reading research" and so on that supports his claims. None of it is actually presented in any of his work that I can find. He seems to have published two papers on topical glycolic acid which have nothing to do with nutrition or aging. The rest is all anecdote and speculation dressed in a slick lab coat manner.

There is a lot of advanced high school level cellular biology and biochemistry slanted slightly to make his inflammation theory of aging seem more plausible. That aspect of his writing is better than average for the self-help genre. I commend Dr. Perricone for not talking down to his audience as do most self-help authors.

On balance, there is a lot of good common sense advice here about nutrition that I can find little fault with. Most of his general recommendations about anti-oxidant supplements are not unreasonable from my perspective. There is a fair amount of reasonably good popular science writing about health. That much makes this a better self-help book than most.

But I also have to withold some favor for this book because it fails to ever connect the science writing with the claims it makes about aging and inflammation or empirical research regarding the specific claims being made in the book. The claims are made plausible not by supporting them with data but by trying to awe the audience with detailed technical explanations and the vague veneer of science through terms like "personal research" and "various studies" and so on that admit to no specifics that can be verified. Even if Perricone's ideas about inflammation being the cause of aging are true, nearly all of his suggestions are things that many people have already been doing for decades, and are still being refined through health, sports, and fitness research.

I admit that I like this guy's more subtle arguments and mostly reasonable way of presenting his "revolution" a lot more than Dr. Atkins' excesses and technical obfuscations. But then I have to put them in a similar category of people who have interesting things to say but then get a bit carried away to an annoying degree with their over-marketing of their own ideas seemingly mostly to prove the doubters wrong. In the final analysis, afterall, in spite of the impression he sometimes seems to give, Perricone isn't actually doing published research regarding inflammation and aging (at least hasn't so far), he is selling books and supplements and giving PBS fundraising lectures.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Perricone Is On The Money!.......2007-02-03

Dr. Perricone does an excellent job in providing the reader with cutting-edge,insightful, and sound strategies to dramatically improve your health. There are a lot of aspects of this book that I really liked.

First, I commend Dr. Perricone for recommending that the reader take nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, there are many doctors out there who still believe and preach that people can get all their daily nutrients by eating a proper diet. The problem is that our soil is so nutrient depleted that the overwhelming majority of people don't get the daily amounts of nutrients they need to sustain good health from the foods they eat.

Secondly, he talks about the importance of exercise. He encourages the readers to explore unconventional exercises such as Yoga and Tai Chi. The only thing that I didn't agree with in this section is that he also endorsed moderate weight lifting. Unless you are trying out for the NFL or Power Lifting for the Olympics, most people are better off doing bodyweight exercises and/or resistance training that incorporates multiple muscle groups in each exercise. Isolation exercises, common in weight lifting, may make you become stronger but you also tend to become inflexible and you also lack endurance. And surprisingly, not all NFL Players lift weights. Terrell Owens, the controversial wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys doesn't lift weights. He does resistance training and bodyweight exercises.

For those of you who are interested in learning about bodyweight exercises, visit www.mattfurey.com. [...] I stopped lifting weights and I have been doing these exercises for over 2 years and have gotten great results. The funny thing is that people still think I go to a gym. And yes, I am an ex-football player too.

Thirdly, Dr. Perricone lays the groundwork for you to create your own "Anti Aging Kitchen." I didn't realize that some of our cookware could be harmful to your health.

Dr. Perricone even takes it one step further by having a resource section for where you can get quality supplements and some healthy recipes.

Although he talks about some scientific information, he wrote it in such a way that the average person could understand it.

Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity is a MUST read for anyone who is serious about achieving good health. So, Enjoy the Journey!

Excellent book! Really enjoyed reading it. The book is written in easy to understand style and gives you directions how to improve your quality of life and stay young longer. I tried Dr Perricone's diet before and it worked for me. So I have reason to believe that this book will help me to improve my health, look and self esteem.

This is an excellent book which is well written by a professional in the fields covered. I rate it the #1 of it's kind. It is now my bible for survival in a world where the farmer grows meat and veggies using harmones, antibiotics and is spraying pesticides with blind abandon. D.S.Miami

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2007-09-21

This book is just .. OK ...you should really review your data structures and algorithms in detail before jumping into an interview. Do the exercises for fun, not thinking oh they will show up in an interview -- also, you should review the details of whatever language that is core to the job you are applying for ... this book is too brief for that. I give it 3 stars instead of 4 because I think the price should be lower.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Title.......2007-09-08

There is nothing inherently wrong with this book, and it is nice to have a single reference before an interview. This book, while including a satisfactory number of interview topics, does not go into enough depth on any topic. The algorithms described are not shown in enough detail or with enough emphasis on time complexity, for example. If you are looking for a quick refresher to calm you down the day before or day of a big technical interview, this book might be sufficient, but find other references for the heavy-duty studying in the week(s) before your interview.

5 out of 5 stars Wowee zowee!!.......2007-09-27

In this 6-CD set Gary Renard presents principles of A Course in Miracles in such a practical way! I simply couldn't track ACIM before reading Gary's book, "Disappearance of the Universe". His second book, "Your Immortal Reality: How to Break the Cycle of Birth & Death", and now this 6-CD set are helping me to put Course principles into EVERYDAY use. "Secrets of the Immortal" has my HIGHEST recommendation to Course students and especially to seekers who may want an overview of ACIM. CAUTION: You will never look at your life and the world the same!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond my own biases..........2007-01-11

I've been a Course student for years and have read both of Gary Renard's books with great interest. When I first listened to this program, I was very disappointed by Gary's lame jokes and tone that spoke down to what I felt should be a borderline retarded audience, even while I was very much aware that this was my own ego prejudice. But after being so debilitated from depression that I couldn't even pick up the Course for a few brief minutes, I played this program while I lay in bed, and the simplicity of his delivery enabled me even in the pathetic state I was in to re-embrace the Course teachings and to realize how the ego could ooze back over the mind of even a devoted, long-time Course student. If you're well-versed in the Course and have retained everything from Disappearance of the Universe and Your Immortal Reality, then you'll probably find this program redundant, not so useful. On the other hand, if you're a beginner or haven't read his other works, you may find it insightful. And too, if you're too miserable to get out of bed, it's a good review of his work and the message of ACIM. All in all, not as good as his books, but I still have to give it five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Set.......2007-01-10

Thoroughly enjoyed hearing the set in the car, and then reviewed it again for our Course in Miracles group.

5 out of 5 stars Moving down the Sprirtual Development path.......2007-01-09

Gary Renard demonstrates an understanding of the Spriritual Principles from the Course in Miracles in his 'Secrets of the Imortal' CD collection.
By listening to Gary speak, you will gain an insite into his unique personality, as well as his devotion to the Truths from this Sacred Text.
This could be an easy way to have a knowlegable student of ACIM to talk to you about some of the complex concepts that a novice may find challenging to understand. Secrets of the Imortal could be compared to a roadmap through an unfamiliar area, but worth the trip one hundred fold.

5 out of 5 stars frank and honest.......2007-01-04

Listening to GARY one gets the feeling that he is very approachable and honest. I like GARY . He`s funny and sounds like he is very concerned that you really " get it " . This is a very good offering . I reccomend it to everybody !! When you finish the cd`s you will definitedly know what FORGIVENESS is really about !!!!!

Book Description

A sought-after “packager” of high school students shares highly coveted strategies to help parents get their kids into the country's most competitive colleges

Did you know? A child's guidance counselor can help reverse a deferral. A parent can help get a child off a waiting list. And there is a way for students to back out of Early Decision once they've been accepted.

Based on the controversial insider information Elizabeth Wissner-Gross has gleaned from working for years as a successful packager of high school students and from interviews with heads of admission at some of the nation's most competitive colleges, this book helps parents answer questions such as: Can an application be sabotaged by a competing student or parent? How do colleges really know if a student applies to two or more schools for Early Decision? Is it possible to prescreen a teacher's recommendation? As well as the biggest question of all: Of the tens of thousands of highly qualified students that graduate each year, why should a college choose yours?

Targeting the college-educated parents of today's college-bound teenagers who seek to gain a proven edge in the highly secretive and seemingly arbitrary college admissions process, What Colleges Don't Tell You (and Other Parents Don't Want You to Know) reveals 272 little- known, unconventional, tried-and-true secrets to help parents get their children into the most competitive schools of their dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Consumer-Oriented Reference.......2007-09-15

Having recently gone through the college admissions process with two children, we've looked at most of the books in this category. What sets this book apart from the others is the fact that the author is unquestionably on the side of you, the consumer. Ms. Wisner-Gross lends transparency to the business of college admissions, and offers many suggestions reflecting her ability to think outside of the box. This book was extremely helpful to us, and a clear favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Getting Your Child Into a Top School.......2007-09-02

The presentation emphasizes the importance of monitoring grades from the
9th grade onward because this provides a good predictor of future performance. In addition, parents should track grading rubrics. Student
practice is important to solidify knowledge of the technical subject areas. i.e. math, science and foreign language

Sometimes, group study can make tedious work more palatable and manageable. The author provides a list of excellent colleges that do not require an SAT score. i.e. Bates, Bowdoin, and Harvey Mudd engineering school. Olin College provides a free engineering school. The author recommends that students provide a resume, chart and no picture.

Essays should provide a sincere recitation of your accomplishments and what you plan to contribute to the college. Applicants should demonstrate a passion for the area of study in the application. In addition, areas of strength should be emphasized.

The authors really do not explain the pitfalls of selecting a top school.
First of all, what is a top school? Is it a place with a 100% job
placement rate or a place where only PhDs are hired or a place where
top SAT scorers are highly sought out? In my own experience, it is
important to visit the institution of choice and talk to current and
former students. Do students seem to be happy? Are they overworked?
Do teachers teach or do student teachers take up most of the teaching
load because professors are too busy publishing and doing research?
These are all areas to be investigated because college is a multi-year
commitment in time and money.

The author doesn't say so; however, a top school consists of the following:
o excellent job placement/prospects in your major area of study
o good preparation for graduate school work, if ever contemplated
o comprehensive teaching by academic types or working professionals
o a current curriculum (although professional licensure courses of study
are mandated by state or federal law)
o a reasonable cost for the value of the education provided
o a roster of accomplishment by the alumni
i.e. Professional licensure, PhD or graduate education, publishing,
inventorship, identification by the print media

There are things you do not want in a top school. i.e.

o professors or teachers who delegate too much teaching to assistants
o instruction that is too esoteric or theoretical
o an institution that doesn't link the education to professional placement
o too much adherence to bell curves and rigid grading rubrics
o teaching that assumes too much prior background in the subject matter
o an environment which is not conducive to learning
o an unaffordable cost for the education

5 out of 5 stars A great help!.......2007-08-31

I, like some of the others was a bit put off by the title, however, I bought the book after browsing through the chapters because of the practical and pragmatic advice given.

I did not know that the information that you give for your child's interests in one part of the college application would have a direct bearing on how he/she should write their essays - that one should support the other.

I also did not know how important the essays are on a college application until my son came home with his guidance counselor's form and ALL the questions were in the form of an essay directly taken from the college application.

If my son comes in with well-thought-out essays that showcase him and what he can offer a school, is he to be considered "packaged" because his parents bought a book that helped him?

The negative comments (which are in the minority and really should not have the prominent position they do on this website) really do not reflect the majority of us that have found it invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars For smart parents who want to even out the playing fields.......2007-08-06

Parenting of teenagers has become very polarized in America, as the reviews for What Colleges Don't Tell You seem to demonstrate: There are the involved parents who maintain close relationships with their teenage children, and there are parents who prefer to let their teenagers bring themselves up with minimal input or guidance--independence at all costs--who are outraged by high-achieving families that work together.

Parents who value the art of parenting right into the teenage years can gain a lot from What Colleges Don't Tell You. The book is very respectful of teenagers and tells parents how they can guide and remain close during their children's high school years. But for those who think that parenting ends when their kids become teenagers--or for kids who resent any parental involvement--the book will probably seem foreign and even threatening.

Parents of high achievers will be especially impressed with the insights that this book provides. Admission to the prestige colleges is made more accessible and more logical for hard working, dedicated students. Wissner-Gross helps the reader to understand the current admissions system, which apparently is no longer based solely on GPAs and SATs; she helps the reader understand the many subjective credentials--and how a dedicated student can earn them--in a world where the "haves" prefer to keep these factors secret.

Adults who believe in blind obedience--the high school is always right--may find this approach to college admissions daunting. But more educated parents who prefer to have the playing fields evened out will particularly appreciate the book's in-depth discussions of grades, college essays, and studying.

I don't recommend this book for conventional thinkers who have stereotypical teenage children and prom queens who lack focus and academic commitment. Benefiting from this book probably requires child-centered families with lots of rapport. It seems targeted more toward today's involved parents, rather than 70s style do-your-own-thing parents. I strongly recommend this book to families where parents and their teenagers work as a team. Other people won't get it. I wish it had been available back when I was in high school.

5 out of 5 stars Like Having a Personal College Advisor!.......2007-08-04

This book was released as my daughter was entering 12th grade...I wish Eliabeth Wissner-Gross had written it sooner! In "secret" #14, she discusses some academic competitions and programs which are highly regarded by colleges and are less well-known than Intel and Westinghouse. We had never heard about them, even though we're in a highly academic school district and this is my second child to pass through it! Her unique perspective on how to approach and prepare for standardized testing is detailed, extremely informative and may actually improve your relationship with your college-bound kid! Every section of this book provided valuable information that made us feel like we had a personal college advisor!
