Book Description
Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, by author Dan Brown, have deceived millions of people across the world with a plethora of lies about the one true God, Christianity, the Holy Bible, and the Christian Church. Dan Brown has achieved this by presenting the elements in his novels under the guise of fiction, while at the same time, claiming that they are factual. But even Brown's "facts," which he maintains are historically informed, are full of inaccuracies and historical discrepancies. What Dan Brown is describing in Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code can most certainly not be categorized as fiction, because in reality, the core and foundation of his writing is Theological and Christological. However, the Theology and Christology which Dan Brown has incorporated into his novels is a false Theology and Christology?-?it is grossly distorted and stridently far from the truth. This apologetic work sets out to provide the true Theological and Christological teachings of the Holy Orthodox Church in response to the deceptions in the selected writings of Dan Brown.

The Nanny Diaries is an absolutely addictive peek into the utterly weird world of child rearing in the upper reaches of Manhattan's social strata. Cowritten by two former nannies, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, the novel follows the adventures of the aptly named Nan as she negotiates the Byzantine byways of working for Mrs. X, a Park Avenue mommy. Nan's 4-year-old charge, the hilariously named Grayer (his pals include Josephina, Christabelle, Brandford, and Darwin) is a genuinely good sort. He can't help it if his mom has scheduled him for every activity known to the Upper East Side, including ice skating, French lessons, and a Mommy and Me group largely attended by nannies. What makes the book so impossible to put down is the suspense of finding out what the unbelievably inconsiderate Mrs. X will demand of Nan next. One pictures the two authors having the last hearty laugh on their former employers. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
The Nanny Diaries has become an international phenomenon. Reviewed, featured, mentioned, or dissected in every major newspaper, magazine, and on every national and local television show, The Nanny Diaries has struck a chord with readers everywhere. With more than 650,000 copies currently in print and atop bestseller lists nationwide, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus' biting satire of the glamorous life on Manhattan's Upper East Side offers both an insider's view and a great read. 'Addicting,'* 'delicious,'** and 'diabolically funny'***, The Nanny Diaries is sure to be the must-read paperback of 2003. Struggling to graduate from New York University and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a job caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved in ensuring that a Park Avenue wife who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child has a smooth day. A poignant satire, The Nanny Diaries punctures the glamour of Manhattan's upper class to reveal the truth behind the Park Avenue veneer.
Customer Reviews:
Good writing. Unbelievable insight........2007-10-07
Wow. This book touched me because I know it's based on reality. The two authors experienced the surreal world of rich, non-feeling mothers serving as the inspiration for the book.
*spoilers to follow*
I was floored when Mrs. X became pregnant again. Completely self-centered and trying to hang on to the last thread of her marriage to her obviously cheating husband.
How she couldn't stand to be alone with her son.
How she couldn't even begin to understand the bond her young son had with Nanny. And it was more important to punish her for not respecting her authority than the devastating impact it might have on her child. (How dare her want to attend her own college graduation??)
The best laugh out loud moment for me was when Nanny was completely trapped in Nantucket for over a week I believe ... and took advantage of Mrs. X's "post-coital glow" and actually asked permission to leave early. I think it was the only time in the book Mr. X paid any attention to Mrs. X so of course, the answer was "yes." Too much.
I thank the authors for the insight into this interesting / sad world.
As a deep-feeling, very involved mother, I'm floored that there are mothers out there like Mrs. X. You can have your Park Ave. apartments and unlimited bank accounts and french "lavender water." I'll keep my coupons, Walmart and beautiful babies' hugs and kisses. :) :) :)
It was OK.......2007-10-03
Wasn't thrilled with the book. I had heard wonderful things - people raving about this book & with the movie coming out, I couldn't wait to read it. But it wasn't as great as I had antisipated, nor as great as people had let me to believe. It was OK - took me a while to get into it. Then I thought it kind of ended abrubtly. But it was OK. Amusing at times to see what Nan had to put up with, but not alot in it to keep me coming back for me. It actually took me a while to finish.
Loved It!!.......2007-10-01
I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down! It's a must read for anyone who works with children and enjoys it like I do!
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-09-27
Nanny is going to NYU to get her degree in child care, but first she must deal with the X's.
The X's are a typical rich New York family: Dad is a workaholic; Mom doesn't have a job but is too busy shopping and running her social life to raise her child; Grayer (nicknamed Grover/Grov) is the four-year-old who wants nothing more than his parents' attention.
Nanny becomes very attached to Grayer, who is absolutely adorable and really likes Nanny because she is the one raising him. Nanny and Grayer go on many adventures together and Nanny must deal with the crazy Mrs. X, who doesn't come home when she says she will, doesn't pay within a normal time frame, and is just downright mean to Nanny -- and to her own child.
This is a great story of love and affection, and also the lack of it. I really liked reading this book because Nanny has a life outside of her job, like falling in love with H.H.-Harvard Hottie. Nanny and Grayer are realistic and the parents are the crazy people in the book, which makes this a great view for teens.
I had a lot of fun reading THE NANNY DIARIES, and will recommend it to all of my friends who have ever babysat for crazy parents!

a little too dark .......2007-09-27
I read this book expecting to get a good laugh, but instead found a very dark tale about a girl who discovers the struggles of being a nanny for New York high society. While the novel is very well written and quickly grabs one's interest, I didn't find the book at all funny. If you're looking for an amusing story, you're not going to find it here.

The Best of Brochure Design 9 (Best of Brochure Design)
ASIN: 3899551583 |
Book Description
Logo design is one of the most crucial and challenging tasks in graphic design. Seemingly simple, The Logo becomes the indispensable face of companies and conveys the brand's identity and philosophy.
Los Logos and Dos Logos documented this unceasing evolution. Expanding on the previous editions,
Tres Logos demonstrates how influences from illustration and street art have become increasingly evident in logo design inspiring ornamental patterns with logos replacing the abstract tag. Additionally, companies are becoming more daring and exploiting their logos to identify their brand with a certain style and appeal.
Fully indexed and structured thematically, the book draws connections between the applications and the field for which it was intended. Like its predecessors, Tres Logos explores the exceptional visual language and stylistic approaches to logo creation by designers around the globe, exhibiting thousands of examples and simultaneously providing information about the "makers'" personal approach.
Tres Logos is a state of the art visual encyclopedia on the current state and evolution of Logo Design.

great book.......2007-08-28
this is the first book by the group that I've seen, and it's amazing. It's well organized, and has amazing logos in it. A great inspirational material.
Wow.......2007-04-17
Excellent book. Sat down with this one for a while and took a good look at all the logos.
Being a designer myself this book is very inspirational, and showcases so many great designers. This book sure is the encyclopaedia of logos and is a must buy if you are a designer especially in the field of corporate ID
A must have!.......2007-03-26
this is a must have for every young graphic designer or for who want stay focus on the actual graphic style!
Designer focused.......2007-03-15
If you're a designer that needs inspiration in this synthetic world (just like me) look no further.
Just go ahead and buy the 3 books of the series (just like me). Don't be afraid the logos don't are seppareted in themes so one book complements the other.
It impress me because I acctually hate logo books, they are so corporate usually. But these stand up for the creative explorations over style, application and paradigm breaking.
A huge collection of logos, I feel I don't need to buy other books in the genre, all I need is there (i am a designer not a agency director, so don't get me wrong)
A chance to make your mark.......2007-03-07
Philippe John Richardson, of the LA design studio Laundry, says on page 289 of this chunky book "Design as art is quite strong these days, and especially with increased access to faster computers, anyone can become a designer. The volume of less crafted and less educated work is quite high, but the need for strong iconography and simple messages - even if stylised - remains." This sort of sums up this interesting logo book.
It is not a book that contains logos of huge corporations, the CBS eye, Mobil Oil, FedEx (I often wonder how many folks get the right pointing arrow in that logo?) Mitsubishi Industries or Chase Manhattan Bank. The best book I've found on these is Marks of Excellence. Tres Logos aims a lot lower at the solid everyday design problems that you can face: logos for an exhibition, a local retail outfit, a small record company, a children's play group or a charity. The four thousand plus designs in the book will easily kick-start some creative ideas and nicely there are a good few logos included whose style you'll most definitely want to avoid. PJ Richardson's reference to fast computers seems very apt. Without the various logo software packages available this book would be real thin.
The book (beautifully printed and designed) is divided into nine sections but I thought that many of the logos could easily be swapped into any section though the Fashion pages, I suppose predictably, have some very appropriate quirky designs. Missing from the book though are any captions to explain what sort of company the logos are for. Each has a reference number and the designer's name but the index at the back of the book only reveals the same info and the designers' addresses.
Tres Logos is an interesting collection of contemporary everyone-can-design-one marks.

Book Description
The new edition of the Handbook of Neurosurgery, now in two volumes, is a supremely practical, concise reference for neurosurgeons, residents, medical students, nurses, radiologists, emergency room personnel, and operating staff. It contains over 2800 literature citations, a thorough index, and is richly cross-referenced. Volume 2 of the new edition covers information needed quickly for emergencies and would be kept close at hand at all times for immediate reference. Apart from having over 150 more pages and over 800 more references, the 4th edition covers many new topics including: - whiplash associated injuries - palliodotomy for Parkinson's disease - cerebral protection during surgery - thromboembolism in neurosurgery - spinal synovial cysts - scar formation following laminectomy for herniated disc and association with recurrent radiculopathy - arachnoiditis - third ventriculostomy - myasthenia gravis - inadvertent durotomy

The Bible.......2007-06-09
It is indispensable for every neurosurgeon. Provides quick and essential information about virtually all matter. Despite it is a handbook it carry even more information than some text books. I wish a PDA version so I will could carry away in my pocket.
This is a terrifc book!.......2007-03-18
I bought this book before my neurosurgery rotation and I was floored at how terrific it was. Not only is there just about anything you might ever need to know about NS in it, but everything the author says it supported by research. Each chapter has an exhaustive listing of the citations. Awesome!
I knew something about NS and felt prepared from Hal Blumenfeld's "Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases," but having this small book in my pocket made all the difference. I carried it everywhere and even brought it into surgeries, and was able to quickly flip through to look up things. I learned a huge amount in a short period of time. I can easily see how this book could carry you from third year through early residency, when you graduate to other NS Thieme books.
good and thorough but reliable?.......2007-03-17
very good and very thorough, with much information on most popular topics of neurosurgery; however, some of the statistical data as percentages of symptoms, outcome and complication rates lack reference. are these data from a single paper or from a compilation done by the author?
Amazing.......2006-08-13
A "must have" book for young neurosurgeons. This brandnew edition surprisingly defines basics of neurosurgery in detail and makes it a good start point for residents.
Greenberg neurosurgery.......2006-02-19
Very useful as a quick help for the every-day practice. Noticable, and even more useful, the extensive list of references at the end of each chapter

Motivation.......2007-09-21
If you want to be motivated or if the market is down and discouraging you. This book will inspire you to get back in the world of trading and teach you basic trading techniques that are still applicable today.
Not that impressed.......2007-09-16
If your buying this book to learn how to buy stocks save your money. Nicolas Darvas isn't all that clear on his strategy and there are better books out there on the subject. On the other hand its a nice quick read if you like to read true success stories.
Not worth the time........2007-08-16
This book is boring- repeating the same experiences that didn't work with all the details on every one. What's good about it (there is some) is of limited value in today's marketplace, and you have to sort it out of all the filler. Overall, if you are trying to learn how to invest wisely- it provides more confusion that it clears up, and thus is a waste of time.
I've been managing my own investments for 7 years, and typically make about 20% annual. Neither novice nor expert, I read to learn more.. but like stocks- some books sound a lot better than they are. I can't see this book as being of much value at any experience level.
The method of Nicolas Darvas makes sense!.......2007-07-15
How I Made $2,000,000 In The Stock Market by Nicolas Darvas.
Making money in stocks depends on what you think at the time you make an entry or exit. Not all investors think alike since every time you buy there is a seller on the other side or vise versa. (Zero Sum Game)
You either go up the staircase, stand on the staircase or go down the staircase. Very simple method to understand but most investors just don't get it and try to make trading stocks much more complicated. If you cannot climb the stair's why even be in that stock? Some trader's are even backtesting the Darvas method if it really works. There is no quick fix on WallStreet to learn how to trade. Nothing can backtest the coming future of any trade that is largely depends on your experience and your judgement and how you exit a trade.
The Darvas method is good read and good concept although a lot of reviewer's here cast their doubt's about this PRICE box method. Trading is a battle within yourself as you gain more experience to become a better trader. It takes time for you to set-up a method that works for you and have confidence in your own method. If you trade full-time it takes you less time to become skillful since you work at it every day even if you do trade using the Darvas method. The Darvas method is based on PRICE not on a stock indicator. When I think of the Davas BOX its like an old BOX camera they still work very well even today.
He did it in a bull market.......2007-07-03
Nicolas Darvas wrote a very entertaining book. Maybe the fact that I'm half Hungarian added to the vicarious enjoyment. His early misadventures touched a raw nerve. His remarks about the high cost of trading in the bad old days reminded me of why I switched to an online broker. While reading the book I broke out in laughter several times.
I was so intrigued by the box model that I created a computer model to test it. The results were a disappointment. While I didn't test it with too many stocks, I ran the tests with growers like BLWD, AAPL, and CMG. Darvas stated that he invested in growth stocks even if he didn't call them that and I tried to mimic his style as closely as possible. To give an example, over a period of 18 month from Jan 2006 to June 2007, the model traded BWLD five times, two winners and three losers for a net gain of 11% over 18 months. Improving the stops might have increased the yield to around 16%. That's nothing to write home about. During that same period of time the Dow 30 advanced 16% (annualized percentages).
Some seven years ago I played around with another computer model based on crossing the various DMA lines. The stocks I used were the tech darlings of the bubble era. I used real price data from the '90s. The model made Warren Buffet look like a rank amateur, it was producing yields well in excess of 50% and it generated a very concentrated portfolio even when I fed it data for over 100 stocks. When I tested the same model in a bear market scenario it came out even, losing the trade commissions.
Why the long story? Because I'm trying to put Darvas' achievement in perspective. From Jan 1957 to Dec 1958 the Dow 30 yielded 24% annualized, about three times its long term average. Darvas used an enormous amount of leverage or margin, more than most of us can obtain today and certainly much more than I would ever be willing to risk. Darvas must have had very good income from his dancing to dare risk that much. He did keep is income and his investing funds separate. Darvas was also very astute in his stock picking. The Soviets launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957 and America was feverishly trying to catch up. Kennedy was a good speechmaker.
I believe that an extraordinary number of favorable circumstances came together in a very fortuitous way to enable Darvas to achieve his feat. From $25K to $2.25M in two years is an annualized return of 843%. As they say on TV, "Don't try this at home." :)

Lonely Planet France.......2007-07-16
What I liked best about this book was the overview of the country. It gave history of the country and then also gave ideas on what to see and do if you want to enjoy learning the history of the country. If you aren't into that sort of thing this book offers the traveler ideas of places to go and things to see that are more modern and not necessarily educational/historic. This book also offers time and money saving tips and off the beaten path places to see and experience while you travel. If one is interested in doing specific tours or seeing certian things the book offers different tour packages in terms of what one might want to see or experience while in France. It is a great way to help narrow down and/or increase the amount of things to do or see when you visit France.
No section on tipping.......2007-06-18
Lonely Planet guidebooks range from excellent (Thailand) to less than mediocre (France). I found the France guide to fall short, especially because there is no section on what constitutes an appropriate tip or gratuity at a restaurant. While there were many useful and interesting tidbits of information (the text box on Cemetaire Pere la Chaise for example) the absence of any mention of tipping jaded me against this particular guidebook.

Written by a team of six authors (Nicola Williams, Oliver Berry, Steve Fallon, Catherine Le Nevez, Daniel Robinson, and Miles Roddis) with 23 combined years of living in France, the seventh edition of Lonely Planet's travel guide France is as high-quality as ever, packed with up-to-date research, 184 maps, and a handful of color photographs. From locations and descriptions of restaurants, hotels, and businesses, to a solid primer on adapting to French culture, to historical insights, transportation tips, recommended tours and trails, an extensive index, and even unique touches such as the URLs of France's most popular bloggers, this updated and expanded seventh edition of France is a "must-have" for anyone determined to make the most of their visit to this proud nation. Decent,...but I wouldn't use it alone.......2007-03-26
I bought this with the Rick Steve's France book because I couldn't decide between the two. Everyone told me that Lonely planet guides are great...but I have watched Rick Steve's shows on TV. Lonely Planet France was okay...but, it lists like 10 hotels for each area, 10-15 restaurants to eat in each area, whereas Rick Steve's France narrows it down to 3 or 4 hotels/restaurants that you must try. Lonely Planet is fine...and it is helpful, but I use it in conjunction with other guide books.
Lonely Planet France.......2007-03-10
This is a nice research book for those who have not been to France. Much to big and bulky to take on the trip. It would be nice to have pull out maps of the different historical sites such as the Louvre incorporated in the book.

Book Description
The Cytokine Reference is the most complete work for anyone interested in the role of cytokines in host defense processes. With essential and comprehensive information on all known cytokines, including chemokines, growth factors and neuropeptides, the database will include hundreds of entries with detailed descriptions of cytokine genes, proteins, cell sources, activities, receptors, receptor signal transduction, gene activation, pathophysiology, therapeutics and techniques. This encyclopedic reference is written by a panel of global experts and will include extensive tables and diagrams. This book/online bundle consists of a two-volume print set, plus a regularly updated and searchable Online Database.
Cytokines are produced by virtually all the cells in our bodies, and they regulate the systems that defend us against infection, tumors, and trauma. This publication and database will enable all those working in the field to find the information they need about this ever-expanding field.
* Online extensively-linked database is highly functional and allows you to reach data in a variety of ways--by cytokine, by cell type, or by disease
