Product Description
What happens when an affable parish priest is confronted by a pair of curious second graders who want to help him solve the Mystery of the Eucharist? Why, he turns it into a teaching opportunity for the entire First Communion class. The book is a wonderful combination of storybook, reference book, and keepsake book. The storybook section mixes a bit of 'who-done-it' drama with traditional religious education to uncover the mystery of faith. Father Hugo challenges the children to look throughout the church for clues to solve the Mystery. Then he and the parish staff together explain how the things they find, the prayers they say, and the music they sing all relate to Jesus Christ and the Eucharist. The reference section of the book contains a rendering of 'our church' that identifies the sacramentals and other items the children find. It also includes information children should know when making their First Communion. The last section of the book allows the First Communicant and his or her family to record the events of this special day, making it a lasting keepsake.
Customer Reviews:
Super informative memory book!.......2007-05-13
I bought this book for my daughter's First Communion. I also bought 4 other copies to give to my niece and some of my daughter's friends who were also making their First Communion. My daughter and I have filled out the back memory section which is such a nice reminder of her special day. There is room for comments, feelings and pictures and mementos. I began reading the story to my daughter, but haven't finished it. She enjoyed looking at the map of the church and discussing it. The only reason I'm giving this book 4 stars instead of 5, is because the story didn't keep my daughter's interest. However, I believe this is because we have really discussed all aspects of the sacrament before Holy Communion. The children in the story are searching for the mystery of the Eucharest. My daughter already understood the mystery. This would be a great book for preparation and then used as a memory book.
My 1st Communion.......2007-05-08
Great! My niece loved this Book and couldn't put it down the entire day. We wrote in it together the day before and then on the day of she read it with other girls her age at her party. It will be a great memory for us to share in years to come!
Wonderful resource.......2007-02-12
I bought this book as a gift for my daughter's birthday so she would have it before she made her First Communion. We read one or two chapters a week as a review of her CCD program (to ensure we covered any gaps). She enjoyed the story and loved filling in the memory pages at the back of the book. What a wonderful Catholic resource! Highly recommended. Also consider getting the companion book Today I Made My First Reconciliation.
simply wonderful.......2003-09-26
This book is a must read not only for children who are about to make their First Communion, but for the parents of the children as well. It's an easy to read book that takes you step by step through the process of this special day in their lives. Children will love it not only for the writing, but for the beautiful illustrations. Parents will love it because it's a wonderful refresher course as they recall their own First Communion.
Mom in San Diego.......2003-05-10
My daughter received this book for her First Communion. We just finished reading it together and I don't know who learned more. The story kept us both entertained. She could identify with the children in the story and loved the 'mystery' aspect. The explanation of things found in the church and the Mass, though detailed, are kid-friendly. I just love everythning about this book and highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
LORD, I Want to Know You.......2007-10-05
An excellent book that helps us know God more deeply and intimately and to know exactly how He works in our lives. Kay Arthur takes us through all of the names for God and teaches what those names mean to us in this day in which we are living. She breaks the study up in small daily "doses". She is an exellent teacher and this book is more proof of that. I learned a lot from the book and I highly recommend it for anyone who desires to know God better.
An excellent study guide.......2007-06-01
We are using this as a group study for a ladies' Sunday School class. The content and questions have profitable depth and insight.
Great for group use.......2007-01-17
If your small group, Sunday school, or other group is looking for a great study that keeps you in God's Word and applies everything discussed to the real-world, this is a great book. I went through the study with a group of 7th and 8th graders and thoroughly enjoyed it. Packed with Scripture and great discussion questions, there should be no lull in the interaction among your group members. And what could be more beneficial than studying the names of God and delving into a deeper understanding of His character and attributes? Highly recommended.
Awesome Study.......2005-10-03
Great study---I have always enjoyed the teachings of Kay Arthur. Understanding many (but not all)of the facets of God, His names shows He cares for me in evey area of my life. In studying the Names of God, I can now pray and believe using specific names knowing that God is my salvation, peace, provider, healer........
A disappointment.......2002-04-23
This book is a study of the names of God. However, I found some of the commentary and discussion points a stretch - discussing sexual abuse when studying the account of Hagar.

For Those Helping Others Recover ..........2007-03-21
Lord, I Want To Be Whole The Power Of Prayer And Scripture In Emotional Healing
This is a wonderful guideline for assisting those that are emotionally and spiritually injured - a great resource for pastoral staff in recovery ministry. Ms. Omartian's book emphasizes that the Lord loves us so much that He is willing to bring us back to safety, security, and emotional health (Jeremiah 30:17, KJV):
17For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD"
What's great about this book, is that you may read ahead and skip around chapters, to address issues that may be applicable and urgent at the time of your life, without missing the essence of each lesson. Bravo Ms. Omartian! Another great read!

Book Description
While growing older certainly has plusses, its downside poses big challenges. Physical decline, loss of spouses, relatives and friends, memory lapses, feelings of inadequacy or uselessness-such things can give us those "senior moments" that sidetrack us with fear and worry. This book brings encouragement to people in their golden years, prompting them to reflect, laugh, play and to take both burdens and joys to the Lord who cares for them.
Each of the 90 short pieces contains a note to God about a topic of special interest to seniors, a word from God in Scripture, a prayer and a place for the reader to write her or his note to God.

Help, Lord! I'm Having a Senior Moment: Notes to God on Growing Older.......2006-11-10
I bought this book for my Mother, she said it was one of the best books she had read and she said she could not stop laughing. So, I had to read the book myself and it is great humor and was fun to read.
This Book Hits Home.......2006-08-15
Bought this book for my mother. She read half but put it away because it really hit home and she felt the auther was talking about her. she doesn't want to face the reality of her life or the reality of what the book is saying so she will not finish reading it. I find the book interesting in knowing that all older people go through this and it helps to see the humor and the understanding of aging.
Delightful! Humorous! Touching!.......2002-09-06
Who would have thought having those forgetful, sometimes embarrassing, senior moments could be so much fun--at least when they happen to someone else. I thoroughly enjoyed Karen O'Connor's depiction of the delightful roller coaster ride we take in the process of becoming "blessed with many years." Her humorous and sometimes touching stories provide models of how we can greet our advancing years with a philosophical attitude and a wry smile. Her comments and prayers at the end of each story help us put it all into perspective.

Book Description
Many of us go though life knowing that God loves us and trying to serve him by going to church, teaching Sunday school, leading youth group, and serving as a deacon. We set aside time to read our Bibles and to pray, and we teach our children to do the same. But some mornings we wake up wondering if we’re missing something. We know God with our heads, but we want to know him with our hearts.
We long to see Jesus, but we don’t know where to begin.
Like many others, Anne Graham Lotz, the second daughter of Billy and Ruth Graham, has longed throughout her life to see the Lord Jesus and to know him on an intimate personal level. Born and raised into a prominent Christian family, Anne knows that God doesn’t have any grandchildren and that no one can ride into the kingdom of God on their daddy or mommy’s coattails. So she has searched God’s Word daily for a fresh touch of Jesus.
I Saw the Lord invites you to undertake a journey with Anne, the journey to experience a fresh touch of Jesus by soaking in God’s Word. Using the words of Isaiah, Anne shows us what we’ve been missing and why we need Jesus. She teaches us how we can see Jesus, who Jesus really is, and how to know if we’ve seen him.
Chronicling her own and others’ struggles to grow in faith, Anne shows the difference a fresh touch of Jesus has made in her life and the difference it will make in yours. If you’re looking for more than religion and for more than a one-time religious experience, join Anne in reviving your life and in finding a relationship that will last a lifetime.

Ray of Sunshine.......2007-05-12
Ms. Lotz presents the Bible in a totally different way than anyone I know. When she speaks of Isaiah, she makes you feel like she knew him personally. She really gets into the mind of the character. Even though she is Billy Graham's daughter she has issues just like the rest of us. People don't always treat her so well either. She is very humble in letting us know that. Her writing is for the average person who needs encouragment.

A gentle, but bold and thought-provoking "wake-up call" .......2006-03-29
As the daughter of the world renowned evangelist Billy Graham, author and speaker Anne Graham Lotz frequently shares in her auspicious father's spotlight --- not on his shirt-tails as it were, but because of her own skilled ability to speak and write in a similarly compelling manner. Lotz has written a number of titles entreating fellow Christians to draw closer to Jesus Christ as the meaning maker to all of life's quandaries and as the final answer to discovering true inner-satisfaction and peace amidst a troubled, war-ravaged world.
In her newest text, Lotz continues in a similar vein, challenging evangelicals to "wake-up" to the call that time is speeding by and countless individuals pass into eternity unprepared spiritually. Citing 9/11 as her own personal "wake-up call," Lotz recounts her invitation to speak on "The Early Show" mere days after the 9/11 attacks. Revisiting her thoughts and feelings from that time, Lotz reports on her on-air conversation with co-host Jane Clayson, in which she shared that it is America's moment to decide whether "we're going to implode and disintegrate emotionally and spiritually or whether we're going to make the choice to be stronger." In response to Clayson's assertion that many people were expressing indignation and anger at God, Lotz replied with an honest observation that, for the most part, Americans have been shaking their fist at God and telling Him to get out of the schools, out of the government, out of businesses, and out of the marketplace. "And God, who is a gentleman, has quietly backed out of our national and political life, our public life, removing His hand of blessing and protection."
On the heels of such a pronouncement, Lotz then begins her text in earnest as she lays the foundation for the practicalities of re-awakening a believer's heart who outwardly appears to be in tune with Christ because such said Christian quotes Scripture, prays out loud, sings hymns from memory, and has a cursory understanding of historical Christianity. Yet this person lacks the heart passion for God's Word, for intercessory prayer, for sharing the gospel, for saving a lost and dying world, and for Him alone. Pointedly, Lotz goes straight for the jugular and aims to either incite fresh passion or see complacent Christians cringing at the truthfulness of her words.
With the prophet Isaiah as her model, Lotz explores this biblical character's journey to greatness by detailing his life struggles, which she successfully pairs with modern-day life events so as to further demonstrate how alike today's believers are with historical figures and how God works in similar fashion throughout the ages with His people. Lotz urges Christians to recognize their sleeping state, wake up, open their eyes, rend their hearts, bend their knees, heed the call, move their feet to action, and stay awake for the duration. One of Lotz's strong suits is the ability to balance difficult calls to change with hope for lasting inner-transformation. She understands that Christians, on their own steam, cannot achieve (or succeed over the long haul) what the Bible calls them to do without the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit.
Fans of and newcomers to Lotz will be admonished, chastised and revived. And due to Lotz's gentle boldness, they will thank her for the upbraiding.

Challenges to go beyond surface relationship with Christ.......2006-03-07
Great things come in small packages. And Anne Graham Lotz's book, I Saw The Lord: A Wake-up Call For Your Heart proves this. This 240-page, convicting, inspiring, yet conversational book takes you on a journey like no other focusing on Isaiah 6:1-8. It carries a punch! But Anne Graham Lotz goes on the journey with you, sharing her personal experiences, lessons learned - both harsh and easy - and rejoices with you as you see the Light as never before. Be warned: I Saw The Lord isn't a journey for those who are content with a surface relationship with Christ.
"I believe the answer is that there is more to knowing God than just head knowledge alone. I believe the kingdom of God is desperate for churches that are filled, not with good Christians, but filled with great ones - Christians whose knowledge of God has made the eighteen inch drop from their heads to their hearts. Until that drop occurs within us, we lack heart because we lack vision."
Anne Graham Lotz is highly encouraging, but asks gut-wrenching, hard-to-read questions: "What has caused you to doubt that Jesus sits on the throne? Do you feel separated from God? Have you ever felt abandoned by Him?"
Her "Just Say Yes," "Move Your Feet," and "Stay Awake" chapters were especially helpful and encouraging to me. Usually, after I write a review there's a friend or family member I pass on the book to whomever I think would benefit or enjoy the book, too. Customer Reviews:
Grace--not just for salvation.......2007-06-29
Kay Arthur does a beautiful job in this study guide and the DVD/audio set (avail. at Precept Ministries International) of explaining how grace isn't only for salvation, but it is also for overcoming sinful habits--to conquer sin in one's life. Grace has never been made this clear and applicable to me before. If you're sick of struggling with the same ol' sin, this Bible Study Guide is for you.
By God's Grace.......2001-08-04
This study was truly a blessing to me. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a devotional Bible study or a way to spend time in God's Word to get this book. In the first few chapters Kay Arthur gives you some foundational teaching about the law, sin, and grace. This is not your usual devotional. Kay has you going directly to the Word for yourself so that you can discover truth for yourself. I found myself wondering why no one in church taught about the grace of God. I thank the Lord for showing me His grace in providing this study. Now I know I was living by Law and as result I was living beneath my inheritance--under the curse of the Law. Walking in God's grace means that I am totally dependent upon the Father for everything. Discover truth for yourself and get this book. If possible start a bible study with some friends and family using this study. But remember to do it all standing firm in the grace of God. Be blessed.
amazing GRACE.......1999-11-30
Satan would love to keep us under the law,but God sent His Son to free us from the law and it is by Him that we enter into Gods grace. Gods'blessings do not depend on my performance, I was wrongly declaring that I was justified through the cross but that justification was maintained through the law. Kays book has guided me into a deeper understanding that through Jesus we are not only saved from the condemnation of sin but we are saved from the POWER OF SIN NOW.
God's grace is so much more than I could have imagined!.......1999-03-26
This was the first class of Kay's Precepts Upon Precepts classes which I was blessed to complete. She has allowed herself to be used by God in the most remarkable ways, yielding herself to His leading and glory by her incredible insight and sharing in not only the book but the accompanying video. Kay is one of God's blessings, and may He continue to bless her as His name is glorified by the continued use and teaching imparted upon each new reader to her books!
GREAT FOR IDENTIFYING THE TRUTH ABOUT GRACE.......1998-10-23
This book is a good daily study to help you understand the Grace of God. To learn how to live in the Grace of God. How to share the Grace of God with others. A good study book for any serious Christian.

Book Description
Why do Orthodox Christians use icons in worship? What is the "baptism in the Holy Spirit" that Pentecostals speak about? Why do Roman Catholics focus on the Eucharist in worship? What do Lutherans teach us about salvation? What do Presbyterians teach us about God's power? How can Episcopalians deepen our prayer life? What can Baptists teach us about living for Christ?
Adam Hamilton will begin answering these questions and more in this eight-session, video-and-book study. Participants will learn of the history, theology, and distinctive emphases of eight different Christian denominations and faith traditions. For each tradition, participants will hear from a clergy member of that tradition and look at Scriptures that have shaped that faith. Churches that purchase the study will be given tools and sermon starters to create a congregationwide emphasis, shaping worship around elements of each denomination as it is studied.

Book Description
A far more civilized, beautiful life now lies within the grasp of your trembling fingertips
Gentle reader: do you tire of the meager offerings set forth by our humdrum age? Do you seek to cultivate blooms of refinement and joy in your life’s garden? Lord Whimsy, as befitting his office as “Affected Provincial”, humbly offers himself as a guide to those who wish to transcend the banalities of modern existence. A diverse and hilarious collection of treatises, insightful essays, philosophical diagrams, saucy poetry and other amusing trifles, The Affected Provincial's Companion will inspire you to transform yourself into a living work of art, thus setting you upon a course towards that misty, faraway shore known to the ancients as Enchantment.
The perils of sportswear, self-defense for sissies, the proper grooming of facial hair, and how to become a bon vivant—all this and much more may be found between the shimmering covers of this sleek and utterly beguiling volume.

One Affected to another.......2007-01-11
Wonderful, witty and a perfect guide for any young or young at heart Dandy. A welcome protection from the crass and dreary world of "reality tv", Paris,Britany and Nicole. An elysium
one of the most subversive books i've read in years.......2007-01-06
the lord brings it home with this tome on tastelessness in america and how to combat it with dignified attire, prose and comportment. a must-read for all those seeking a return to what cannot come back, that is to say, 'civility.'
Silly Satire or Serious Fun?.......2007-01-04
Imagine a book written by an early 19th century country squire and self-appointed dandy, musing on style and grace and the pursuit of butterflies. Imagine an English country version of a risible Proustian sensualist, becoming enchanted and then aroused by a work of art. This is the world of Lord Whimsy and his various and sundry thoughts and writings. An incredbile anachronism, full of humorous opinions on the pursuit of life dedicated to true beauty- - both in ones dress and in ones heart. It seems almost impossible that someone would write such a book in the 20th or 21st centuries. Each chapter is a self-standing essay on art, clothing, style, birds, bees, fantastic bicycles and life in the soporific langour of outer New Jersey pretending to be Dorset or Cornwall. I love this book, but someone said it is satire. I can't tell if it's satire or serious fun, as in "I am never more serious than when I am having fun." I await the opportunity, soon I hope, to meet his Lordship at one of his public readings. That will be something!
Oh, Yes!.......2007-01-03
One of the funniest books I read all year. Timely, interesting and extremely original. Lord Whimsy is one-of-a-kind!
Lord Whimsy nails it.......2006-12-11
The human institution known as Lord Whimsy is tooo brave, too refined, too insightful for this epoch. A man of wit/ charm/ taste; Who could have predicted his astonishing insights amongst the garbage heaps peddled by the Amazon Empire? Huzzah! B-b-b-buy it!

Customer Reviews:
As good as the title.......2005-07-14
This book was an excellent read! While the author makes the reader think about the principles presented, the ideas are understandable for persons who are not necessarily bible scholars.
The title But Lord, I was Happy Shallow is sure to attract attention and the stories included in this book are well worth the read! How often do we think how happy we were until God changed the situation ... seemingly for the worse? When life does not go our way, we normally turn into whiners and complainers just like the children of Israel in the wilderness. Despite our grumbling, God leads us to our promised land, a place of increased depth in our growth process.
The editor Marita Littauer has compiled over 100 real life stories of struggles and the lessons "learned in the deep places." The writers share from their souls often times with a bit of humor and a whole lot of humilty! The personal experiences cover a variety of topics including marriage, parenting, moving, health issues, church, holidays, friendships, road trips and much more.
This is a great book to give someone in need of encouragement. Often times we think we are alone in our troubles, but that is definitely not the case as one will find out when reading this book.

Anything But Shallow.......2004-12-01
This book was a welcomed respite in a very busy season of life. Each story turned an ordinary experience into an extraordinary life lesson that is easy to relate to. The stories are funny, tender, inspiring, and thought provoking, touching the heart as if being told by a dear friend. With excellence, Marita Littauer has compiled the experiences of many authors, providing encouragement at any season of life. It will make an excellent gift for those needing a boost in the "dailiness" of life.
Deerp Joy.......2004-08-24
In her creative compilation But Lord, I Was Happy Shallow, gifted author-editor Marita Littauer has gathered an amazing array of true stories which demonstrates that it's the
difficulties of our lives that produce the depth of our characters. The best things in life really aren't free. Spiritual growth costs us something. But oh the rewards! With wit, wisdom, and sometimes a little whimsy, these talented authors prove that God is bigger than any challenge they have faced. He has been there to stretch, shape, and sanctify them through the ups and downs of life, while always drawing them into closer relationship with Him. If you want to laugh, to cry, to rise higher and leave your "shallow-lands" in the dust beneath your feet, this book is your ticket to soaring. You may be happy shallow, but after reading Littauer's book, you'll realize that you can be joyful deep!
