Informative.......2007-06-27
Keating provides a great deal of information and sound support for his writing. I found his academic tone to be a bit offensive at times and, quite honestly, a turn off.
Good for its intended purpose.......2007-04-25
In this well-organized and concise response to 52 common misconceptions of the Roman Catholic faith, Karl Keating provides answers from scripture, tradition, and history to set the record straight. I must admit, I do not think I would have stated any of the misconceptions in the way the author did but perhaps my misconceptions are not so far off track as many. Still, the responses are cogent and concise with ample proof scripture texts and historical/traditional background. It would be a good start especially for anyone who has a limited grounding in catholic theology in preparation for further and more detailed study in the catechism of the Roman Catholic church. A good start but not a very thorough theological/doctrinal study - but, in fairness, it was not intended to be a systematic theology or Roman Catholic doctrinal summary. This is more a reactionary book in response to some rather common (and sometimes silly) notions even lifelong Catholics have accepted as fact. Very well done for its type.
A great book for Catholics!.......2007-03-30
I someone wishing to learn more about the Catholic Church I found this book to be an excellent representation of the Catechisms. I think this book would be a must for any "Cradle Catholics" who has forgotten what the Church teaches.
As a Protestant on the verge of reconciling my Faith with the Catholic Church I found it an enjoyable read which answered some of the "uhs?" I've had for years.
What this book doesn't try to do is to prove those statements. For me that was just fine as I have many other books now which contain that information. This book will definitely help set the record straight, you will just still have questions as too why, especially if you aren't Catholic. But hey, to me that search of why is a wonderful thing that can help all of us learn more about our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Skim this Book and You will Read it.......2007-01-14
52 questions are posed along with their answers. Written in the question and answer style of the Baltimore Catechism, only this book really grabs the reader, and holds their interest. I think this book will be of great interest to any Catholic that invests any amount of time into religion. This reader has seen many quick perusals of this book turn into a regular reading session. The questions are posed, many that are commonly heard and the book's answer becomes irresistible.
The Church's views on Extraterrestrials, Angels, civil divorce, etc, are all discussed within this book. `
The author is a well-known apologist, very knowledgeable. This book has a lot of bang for the buck, really quite an eye-opener text
TO DISCOVER WHAT CATHOLICS MUST TRULY BELIEVE READ PACEM IN TERRIS.......2006-11-25
This book you might browse through amazon=s Search Inside system. You will see it is nothing but a collection of irrelevant "how many angels dance on the head of a pin?" questions, formative not normative.
To discover the essence and truth of what Catholics really believe, study instead the Reverend Father Richrd McBrien: Catholicism. Study the National Conference of Bishop-s The Challenge of Peace: GOd-s Promise and Our Response. Study the good Pope John-s Pacem in Terris. Study Gaudium et Spes, and you will discover that NO Catholic can participate in any way indirectly nor directly in our sixteen year long war against Iraq, which has left over a million dead. Study our US Conference of Catholic Bishop=s Economic Justice For All, and realize the horror of our current administration=s domestic and foreign policies. Read Father Fox=s Creation SPirituality and relaize the accounting we will have to give of our stewardship of creation.
Instead of these meaningless considerations in this present book, read Archbishop Romero, Father Ellacuria, and consider carefully their martyrdoms for the poor of our Church and for their Gospel witness. Read the Reverend Father John Dear, SJ, and his companion, the courageous and thoughtful and Reverend Father Daniel Berrigan. Read Thomas Merton, especially his Peace in a Post=Christian Era, and contemplate that which a true Catholic Really Believes. Further study carefully Bishop Pedro Casaldaliga, the Rev. Father Charles Curran, Fr. Leonardo Boff=s writings especially his recent commentaries on the Our Father and the Hail Mary, and his earlier contemplation of the Stations of the Cross. Read the Magnificat, the prayer of Mary as to fate of the wealthy and of the poor.
Therein you may discover that which a Catholic Really Believes. Not here in Keating. All of these references are still available within the mighty amazon.
Product Description
The author explains how through his medical and religious experiences he has discovered another method of healing. He believes that many supposedly "incurable" patients are the victims of ancestral control. He therefore seeks to liberate them from this control. By drawing up a family tree he can identify the ancestor who is causing his patient harm. He then cuts the bond between the ancestor and the patient by celebrating, with a clergyman, a service of Holy Communion in which he delivers the tormented ancestor to God.

Best book on healing.......2005-02-25
A great book on healing,it is amazing and wonderful to read how God helps even in times of trouble.
I read this book along with A Guide to Healing and also Intergenerational Healing by Fr Degrandis and then proceeded to heal my family tree this way:
First I started inner healing of myself.
Then I prayed for healing my family tree and it has worked wonders for me.Thank God ,this book is truly a gem for those seeking solutions to the various unexplained things happening in their life. There were many problems in our family including mental illness passed down to generations which modern medicine could not cure and we did not know what to do. Dr.McAll actually helped us see the root cause of our problems like idol worship and disobedience to the first commandment by previous generations and by solving them,we were delivered from such long torture and agony. Also there were many abortions in our ancestral families and we were able to ask forgiveness and baptize those unborn souls. Thus many unresolved problems and violent behaviour of many family members were cured.I could write many more examples, this book actually took me to a higher level of understanding God's works. The healing powers of Jesus' blood in the Eucharist was always there, but we just did not know how to receive those blessings.A great many thanks to Dr McAll for such wonderful sharing.
wonderful, enlightning, fascinating and very spiritual.......1997-08-26
This book and it's new companion - Guide to Healing the Family Tree are a must reading for anyone engaged in counseling be it 'spiritual' or not. The anecdotal format is excellent for bringing examples to a sharp point without a lot of laborious wordiness. These books give a sense of hope and give a direct relationship to biblical teaching and belief that is relative to problems of today on an individual level. It doesn't require any great knowledge of psychology but only a desire to better understand how past personal or family experiences can have a great impact on current lives and events

The photographer makes it happen........2007-02-28
The photographer, Randal Ford, is amazing. He captures the essence of everything he shoots -see his website and no, I'm not related... I can't judge the stories, although they seem pretty good to me.
Just the photos are worth the price of this book. For a little bit more of Texas check out books by Wyman Meinzer and John Graves. Texas - it's a big place.
Beautiful photos, inspirational text.......2007-01-10
I thought this was going to be primarily an art book. I purchased it as a gift for my in-laws, but of course I had to glance through it before I gave it to them. I loved it - the stories that go with the lovely pictures are short and well-written - I couldn't put it down. My in-laws loved it, too. Now I want one for me!
Regular reader of books.......2007-01-05
It is amazing, with all the different faiths, that we all are working for the same thing: higher ground. Pictures in the bok are great.
The Amazing Austin Area and a few strangers.......2006-12-18
This book proves that if you have enough money, you can publish a book that includes your family and friends. Add to that a few more of the rich and famous of the Austin area, throw in a few out-of-town strangers for authenticity (unbeknownst to them), then call it art. Mike Blair wrote that he "crisscrossed the state, searching for stories of faith..." And the book is by "Roy Spence with the People of Texas." Hmmmmm... The photographer's work is incredible, but many of the stories are not. This is a good example of what Chogyam Trungpa calls spiritual materialism at its best. I'd be curious to find out the number of people who are native Texans--since it seems that many are not. C'mon. Don't Mess with Texas.
A buddy of mine also loves this book..........2006-11-21
This book will fill you with hope for the future! The absolutely breathtaking photos of holy men and women were taken by Randal Ford, and the stories were collected and edited by Mike Blair. Some motivational pieces are as follows: A quote by St. Ignatius Loyola, "For those who believe, no explanation is needed, for those who do not believe, no explanation is possible" is positioned opposite a photo of a stark white metal cross in a Texas field. Sister Angela, a Catholic nun who lives in a monastery and raises miniature horses, says, "God is the boss, and I'm just an employee." There is a great photo of Gerald Mann, who was the founder of Riverbend Church, and he is quoted, "The dirtiest word in the English language is they." Alan Graham of Mobile Loaves and Fishes in Austin, is pictured on the streets with a homeless friend and he states, "When you walk through the wall of prejudice, you will find that we are all indeed children of God." Carol C. Walker, Ph.D., is listed as "Missionary, Humanitarian, Texan" and her words quoted are, "We need to always be able to step back and say, 'There might be another way of thinking than mine.'" If you need a spiritual boost as I did, leaf through these pages and know that God is with us.

Its central part takes thirty hypothetical situations that have attracted the application of good faith and analyzes them according to fifteen national legal systems. It concludes by explaining how European lawyers, whether from a civil or common law background, need to come to terms with the principle of good faith.

Worth at least 15 Stars and worth its weight in gold!.......2007-02-20
If you're a Catholic you MUST own this book and read it so that you can defend your faith. If you're a non-Catholic Christian, you must read it to learn about your heritage. When I was a protestant, I one day wondered, "Just what am I protesting against? Why should I assume that the Catholic Church is wrong without looking into the matter myself?" It's been my experience that most people don't really know what they believe or why they believe it, much less what or why anyone else believes. If you are an "Anti-Catholic" protestant who thinks that the Roman Catholic Church is the [..] of Babylon' then, with all due respect, PARK YOUR PRIDE, remove the chip from your shoulder, get comfy and open your mind and heart and read this book. Of course, before you do, offer a prayer to the Holy Spirit for guidance. God Bless all of you on your journey.
Finest, Most Engrossing Book In my Lifetime.......2007-02-11
besides the Bible. Page by Page, Young Cajun Priest Fr Romaro has Answered All Key attacks/questions about the Catholic Church. He Cites Early Church Fathers, after Citing each Question/Attack. Cites Definitive Bible Verses, And Reasoning, And Sometimes Recent Church Leaders. An Ideal Methodology. Fr Romero Adds a Basic Chart of the Many Different Protestant Denominations That Began 1500 Years after Jesus. Major Surprises Page by Page. Cannot put down. And This Book by Fr Romero is the First Such Book. Other Authors are Following. Very Highest Recommendation.
Superb resource for anyone seeking knowledge of Christianity.......2006-09-01
Fr. Romero has written an excellent resource that should be on every apologist's bookshelf. Each topic begins with a statement of Catholic teaching, then each major objection is handled individually, and finally the writings of the early Fathers of the Church end the chapter. The footnotes alone are worth the price of the book!
Practical Guide to Catholic Christianity presents and rebuts Protestant Criticism.......2005-09-26
This book is a very practical guide to what Catholics believe. It is written is practical style, setting forth in each chapter a basic tenant of Catholic faith, followed by a series of Protestant objections and Catholic Responses to each objection. This format makes the book easy to follow and a great source for quick research or for group study discussions. As a protestant, I am trying to educate myself on what Catholics genuinely believe, and I've concluded that the best source for that information is not from Protestant critics but from those who are themselves Catholic. The author, a Catholic priest whose ministry emphasizes teaching about what it means to be Catholic, quotes from much Scripture in this book and provides citations and footnotes to numerous Church documents to support the points made.
For purposes of gaining a better understanding of what the Catholic Church teaches, I highly recommend this book. It is also beneficial for developing a mutual sharing of faith between Protestants and Catholics so that each can better understand what they have in common as well as their actual differences. From that point, a more meaningful, productive and spiritual conversation may follow.
A great defense of Catholicism.......2005-05-05
Fr. Mario Romero's book is well organized into succint and easy to read chapters. I believe this to be a great beginners book for anyone wanting to get into apologetics or want clear answers to common Protestant objections. This books is presented in an objection and answer form. Catholics can easily use this book as a reference when they are accused by friends and relatives of following a false religion. This book contains a perfect mix of everyday analogies, Scriptural portions, and references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Fr. Romero is able to demostrate that the Catholic Church is completely scriptural and has faithfully defended the "deposit of faith" Christ has given to this apostles which has been passed on for 2000 years and is still free from strife and error.

Review of Dewey's A Common Faith.......2001-09-04
In this book John Dewey presents a compelling argument for a union of religious and social ideals, and for consistency in both idea and action. Although the book is brief, the rhetoric is dense and the thesis is thought-provoking. This volume is an excellent example of Dewey's social and political thought. It should be read and considered not only by social scientists, but also by Christians who wish to intelligently grow their own faith.

Must read for everyone from the cradle to the grave!.......2003-07-09
This book is just what the doctor ordered. From the Sunday School Teacher to the Businessman, this is a message that should be taught from the classroom to the boardroom. Holiness is always something that captures God's attention. Sergio Scataglini takes a message of holiness and wraps it in the fear and the grace of Jesus Christ. Hooray for a book that will challenge your walk with Jesus Christ.
