Book Description
In her first two books, Byron Katie showed how suffering can be ended by questioning the stressful thoughts that create it, through a process of self-inquiry she calls The Work. Now, in
A Thousand Names for Joy, she encourages us to discover the freedom that lives on the other side of inquiry.
Stephen Mitchell—the renowned translator of the Tao Te Ching—selected provocative excerpts from that ancient text as a stimulus for Katie to talk about the most essential issues that face us all: life and death, good and evil, love, work, and fulfillment. The result is a book that allows the timeless insights of the Tao Te Ching to resonate anew for us today, while offering a vivid and illuminating glimpse into the life of someone who for twenty years—ever since she “woke up to reality” one morning in 1986—has been living what Lao-tzu wrote more than 2,500 years ago.
Katie’s profound, lighthearted wisdom is not theoretical; it is absolutely authentic. That is what makes this book so compelling. It’s a portrait of a woman who is imperturbably joyous, whether she is dancing with her infant granddaughter or finds that her house has been emptied out by burglars, whether she stands before a man about to kill her or embarks on the adventure of walking to the kitchen, whether she learns that she is going blind, flunks a “How Good a Lover Are You?” test, or is diagnosed with cancer. With her stories of total ease in all circumstances, Katie does more than describe the awakened mind; she lets you see it, feel it, in action. And she shows you how that mind is yours as well.

A thousand ways it's fabulous.......2007-09-15
I usually buy these kinds of books but then only read the first and last chapters. I not only read this entire book, I truly enjoyed it. She's the real deal, Ms. Byron Katie. I've never attended a workshop of hers, but I feel like I know her already. And her exercises have really started to change my life.
Striking insight into the mind of a woman who lives beyond attachment.......2007-09-05
Mindfulness practices and philosophies often say, "Be happy, and accept what Is. Be present." *cynical snort* Easy to say, impossible to do. The Devil is daily life. Sure, the Dalai Lama is serene. He meditates seven hours a day, has all his physical needs provided for by others, and needn't deal with any daily details. And he's celibate--no spouse to help him get dressed ("Oh, Tenzin, surely you're not wearing the maroon robes, again!"), and no teenage kids. Who couldn't be serene with that gig?
What's remarkable about Byron Katie is that she's serene in the midst of the modern, 21st century world. She has kids, a husband, an ex-husband, and an international business.
In this book, she attempts to put into words what it's like, living in her world. Yeah, she talks about life and death and grand universal concepts. Yada yada yada. There are a thousand masters who'll tell you about that.
Katie offers something infinitely more valuable: a glimpse into daily life. What is it like to get out of bed when you're not attached to thoughts like "I have things to do?" What thoughts go through her mind? How about when she does the dishes? Or when she trips on her way to answer the front door? What if she's mugged at gunpoint? Or her child dies? Or what if she's struck by a degenerative eye disease while writing the book? How does that change (or not) her world?
Some of her perspectives on life are familiar. Some are vastly different from anything you've heard. Yet her world makes sense, and even though I'm not there yet, it sounds like an infinitely joyous, loving world worth living in.
If Katie isn't a truly free, non-attached woman, she does the most convincing imitation I've ever heard. Buy the audiobook for a look into her world.
This book does NOT teach you The Work, her method of inquiring into your thoughts to reach this state of joy. For that, check out her book/audiobook Loving What Is, which includes facilitation sessions with real people using The Work.
Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life
The Real Deal.......2007-08-25
Katie is the Real Deal, a clear mind experiencing heaven on earth and living with absolute integrity.
Her previous book, "Loving What Is", is the textbook which tells you in disarmingly simple terms how to get there yourself. In my opinion, it is the Alpha and Omega of all truth texts.
A Thousand Names For Joy gives a further glimpse into what life is like in that clarity. It gives me further incentive to go back to the simple instructions in the first book and Do The Work.
Caution: If you want to stay the same, read something else.
Once these concepts and questions start seeping into your consciousness, we're talking about a revolution.
Enjoy!
An Amazing Book.......2007-08-08
This is an amazing book from an enlightened woman...she tells you what it is like to see the world thru her perception. WOW!
Daily exercise.......2007-08-06
The chapters are small so this is a great book to read a chapter every day and get a positive jolt of energy. It's a wonderful way to transform one's life.

Practical, Simple and Powerful Self-Help.......2007-09-30
Since I was nineteen, I have perused, studied, analyzed, and read dozens of self-help books. I am now fifty which gives you an indication of my interest(obssession?) in this subject. Most of the books "talked at" me, telling me I should do this, that, and the other. In most cases, I always felt a rebellion against someone "telling me what to do" rather than helping me find my own inner knowledge, strength and courage. That is, until I read Taming Your Gremlin. In this slim book, I've learned how to identify and deal with my own gremlins and avoid as much as possible with "shoulds" and "oughts" and "needs". Rick Carson's down to earth style is entertaining and has taught me to bring out my genuine, self-honest self. Becoming self-aware and not self condemning makes the changes easier, much more of an adventure than forcing it. It is a work of True Love!

Taming your Gremlin.......2007-05-22
For those of us fighting depression, this book along with Dr. Burn's book.
"Feeling Good," continue to be my reads of choice even with my meds.
This is a great book if you have voices in your head telling you what a horrible person you are. It's of the same genre of "Who Moved My Cheese," and just as entertaining with a powerful message.
s
therapeutic.......2007-04-02
This interesting and simple little book helped me grapple successfully with the psychological fallout of a divorce. I was sorry I had not read it before I had created big problems for myself by listening to my gremlin.
Terrific Book!.......2007-03-25
This is a great book for anyone trying to tame the doubtful, critical voice that lives inside all of us. It is an easy, enjoyable read and very insightful. I use the book regularly in my life coaching practice and all of my clients have found it helpful.
The best self help book I've ever read.......2007-02-22
I have read a million "self help" books over the years, and this one is without exception, the most effective one that I have ever read. The concepts are spelled out in a simple way, as are the steps to take in order to get out of your own way and change your life for the better. Many books focus on issues and offer no solutions. This one does.

When doctor and author Rachel Naomi Remen (Kitchen Table Wisdom) was young, she was caught between two different views of life: that of her rabbi grandfather and that of her highly academic, research-oriented parents, who believed religion was the opiate of the masses. As Remen gravitated toward academics and serving the world as a medical doctor, her grandfather became an "island of mysticism in a vast sea of science." But over time, Remen discovered that two seemingly divergent paths could lead to the same destination, especially as she learned to blend her spiritual beliefs with her medical treatment.
Remen uses the heart-rending stories of her patients to teach readers how to follow in her example, that is, combining a life of service with a life of receiving and giving blessings (a combination that avoids common problems such as burnout, self-sacrifice, and navel gazing). Remen also includes personal stories of her grandfather, who showered the world with his mystical beliefs and wizened blessings. While this story-by-story structure is similar to the bestselling Kitchen Table Wisdom, it is still a tearful and satisfying formula. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
As a small child, Rachel Remen sat at the feet of her grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the kabbalah, and learned the secret of life: that love and blessings given to others heals our loneliness, unhappiness, and in fact all our wounds. Remen uses her power as a master storyteller to bring to life the extraordinary blessings of ordinary existence. These exquisite pieces show us how we bless and serve each other most often without knowing it, how much life gives to us, and how many of our own blessings we have still yet to receive.
There is nothing more comforting than hearing Rachel's grandfather speak of love, life, and God to a small, lonely, and very spiritual child who was trying to find her way in an unspiritual world. These are stories for keeping at the bedside, for those dark nights when we go out in search of our souls.
Rachel's grandfather has blessed not only his beloved granddaughter but, through her, has blessed us all.

A truly inspirational book!.......2007-10-11
I was deeply moved and inspired by this book. I bought 3 more copies and gave them to friends and family.
Beautiful.......2007-09-24
I love this book - it's absolutely beautiful. The stories can help you grow. I would recommend this treasure to anyone.
A Blessing to Read.......2007-09-14
Easy to Read, Much food for thought.....Life lessons for all of us to learn and use. Short chapters with a new theme in each. Can read short snippets at a time.
A Blessing In Itself.......2007-07-22
I feel bad. Apparently, I'm only the 6th person out of 47 people to give this book anything less than a 5-star rating. And there's only one reason I did that. As a writer myself, I feel that there are too many stories in this book. Some of these little narratives just aren't as powerful or focused as others. And I would have left them out. But please don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment of this wonderful work. It is every bit as inspiring, uplifting, and profound as most of the other reviewers say it is. I especially like the common theme I see running through most of the pieces presented here. And that's the idea that the wholeness of an individual not only includes his or her health, talents and accomplishments, but his or her pain, suffering, shortcomings, and illnesses, too. In life we are called to embrace it all, and resist nothing. And that is the key to a life that is truly fulfilling and rewarding.
Steven Lane Taylor, author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow
One not to be missed.......2007-05-19
I have found My Grandfather's Blessings to be among the most moving books I have ever read. Each brief story can stand on its own. The author relates a simple incident, as many of us have lived, but then goes on in a simple and succinct manner to reveal a deeper meaning within the experience. Ms. Remen does not talk down to the reader, but rather sweeps us up into the experience with her. Upon finishing this book, I immediately ordered five more and sent them out to friends.

Book Description
Building on her successful series of small books about big ideas (Choosing Happiness, Things I Want My Daughters to Know, Time Alive), Alexandra Stoddard's new book focuses on taking charge of your life––your way. In brief essays filled with the optimism, ideas, and examples her readers love, she shares 50 choices you can make to live joyfully in pursuit of what is true, good and beautiful. Her essays remind us to trust ourselves (Information Is Not Inspiration), to stay steady in a storm (Your Choices Count Most in a Crisis), to take risks (Leave the Safe Harbor), to finish unfinished business (Have As Few Regrets as Possible), to surround ourselves with delights (Redefine What Is Beautiful), and to have fun (Cheap Thrills Are Thrilling) This will be Alexandra's 25th book, with publication timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the publication of her classic book on inspired lifestyle Living a Beautiful Life.
Customer Reviews:
It's All About Her.......2007-07-31
I ordered this book looking for inspiration during a down time. I didn't find it. Stoddard does nothing but quote Western philosophers and brag about her own experiences living the good life. The book is, literally, all about her. We hear about her trips to various resorts, how she and her husband (an attorney)treat themselves to a hedonistic dessert every day, and about her design business. We hear about what type finial one customer requested and about the maple bed another client fussed over. I have no idea what any of the Aristotle quotes, Barbados trips, ice creams, or design customers have to do with me learning to live the good life, but Stoddard spends the entire book sprinkling mindless rhetoric with these unremarkable bits of news.
If you want to help yourself live the good life, save a few bucks by avoiding this book.
A dose of healthy inspiration!.......2007-07-04
I believe it is so beneficial to read something inspirational every day, and especially before bedtime. This is a great book for inspirational reading.
Alexandra encourages you to "read these fifty essays in any order you choose-just dive in and muse." -from the book
I first thought that's just what I'd do, -being one who doesn't do well with rules and the 'proper' way of doing things. I love books of essays because you get to skip around and read just what you want, when you want. Well, after I read the introduction, which is actually labeled: "An Invitation", I thought I'd go ahead and read a few pages in and then look around in different places in the book and read whatever looked appealing to me. Well, I guess I got sucked into reading it in chronological order because the 'invitation' was so non-demanding that I couldn't help but keep reading it in order!
Once again, as happens so often with me, the right book at the precise time I needed it. Sometimes it's almost scary how that seems to work out. I recently (the same day I got this book!)was faced with making a decision about something that was pretty important to me. I was struggling with how to pick the right one, because isn't that what we all really want when faced with big decisions -To choose the right one? The second chapter is "Be True to All Your Choices" I LOVED that one as it made me feel confident and reassured in the decision I had made. Then, I just kept reading and trying to absorb all the healthy inspiration I just came across.
The nice thing is that you can dive in anywhere in the book and get a lot of great advice no matter what you're reading about. The chapters (essays) are only a couple of pages each. The point is made in a pleasant short and sweet style. There are quotes and references from many inspiring philosophical sources throughout the book.
I very much enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! Really great gift idea!
You are your choices.......2007-05-30
I enjoy Alexandra Stoddards books. This book was also very good. You can pick it up and read a small section at a time which is very nice if you are busy. Its just a short pick me up to get the day going on a positive note.

Abundance Course, Release Technique and Going Clear.......2007-09-16
There are some people that figure they are going to read a book, once, and somehow get all that they can from it. I've witnessed those that have the same attitude towards other courses and learning experiences in their life.
Letting go of you mind and neurosis is just not going to be that simple a job. This book is very detailed, short and to the point. I also have the Abundance Course, and have spent over 100 hours working with it. My time investment in this type of practice is conservatively well over 3500 hours. It is not to be taken lightly, or that is exactly what you will get out of it.
The Biology of Emoitions, www.gocure.com, Frontal Lobes Supercharge, www.neilslade.com, and www.selfhelprecovery.com, are free and inexpensive resources that I recommend to get fully versed in the brain, neurosis, and methods to find your path to letting go.
Both the Release Technique and the Sedona Method sites have tons of free to inexpensive downloads to start one on the way to clearing the neurosis. These alone can account for at least a hundred hours of releasing, if one is willing to do the necessary work.
Both the Abundance Course and book, as well as the Sedona Method are based on the techniques and prior work of Lester Levenson. The Abundance Course is more body oriented. The Sedona Method, Hale Dwoskin/Lester Levenson, is more oriented to releasing from the neck up.
One has to learn how to feel the feel of releasing and letting go. They are just feelings, and are not you, so you can choose to let them to. The above mentioned resources can aid in getting the gut feel to this process, and use the Sedona or the Release Technique.
The real power to this is repetition, or the Repeat Technique, which is not mentioned in either of these methods. That means that you can release on an abuser, simply by repeating the name. One can get more from the releasing course, by repeating the phrases over and over, and/or repeating the recordings that lead you to release. It takes repetition to unlock the deeper charge on events in the life. It takes repetition to peal away and discharge, one by one, each event to the anchor or core at the beginning of the chain of events that are connected to each other.
This book is an excellent way to learn how to do this. It shows exactly how to take apart the mind on a piece by piece basis, and to start the tears to rolling that will discharge the neurosis. It is simple, yet it does take time and dedicated work.
If you don't plan on working, and spending a lot of time, then keep your apathy, grief, fear, lust, anger, and pride. Go read Tony Robins, and be motivated for a few minuets. Then go back to sleep.

Not abundant at all.......2007-09-03
Don't believe every review you see. They are written mostly for people that never reviewed anything else and during a very short period of time. Very fishy indeed... I have tried to read the book. An absolutely bore. Don't waste time and money in that. I also purchased the audio. Very good for sleeping. It's all hot air.
The Abundance Course: The Lazy Way to Riches, Health and Happiness.......2007-07-26
This book by Larry Crane is most valuable. Clearly written, it guides the reader to feel, accept, and release the blocks to abundance by totally allowing the feelings that are wanting to be accepted.
Thus, I practice giving myself 100% approval instead of mistreating myself by disapproving of whatever I am feeling and pushing the feelings back into my subconscious where they wreak havoc.
This is the roadmap to courageousness, acceptance, and finally, to peace. The practices still the mind as the feelings are allowed, embraced, and ultimately released, leaving me free. It is a simple, constant practice that works absolutely.
Spiritual Without Being Spiritual.......2007-06-01
I was skeptical about this at first, thinking it was just another New Agey "get in touch with your feelings" type of thing. I went beyond my doubts and discovered that the Abundance Course is right on. It's spiritual without being preachy or advocating any kind of religion. Basically, you're cleaning up your mental, emotional and spiritual garbage in an easy way, which allows more goodness to come to you.
In just a couple of weeks, I have seen huge changes manifest in my life since working with the Release Technique, from financial gains to improvements in relationships. Here's an example: One of the beginning goals was to manifest $100 or more by releasing only. Five days later, I received an unexpected check from an unexpected source for $113. That's just the beginning of what we can do by releasing. I intend to make this a lifetime practice and look forward to many gains on all levels as a result.
To me, the point of life is to be the best that I can be. The Release Technique taught in this book certainly provides a great tool to get on the right path. By releasing, you can attract abundance in ALL areas of life, whether it's spiritual enlightenment, quality friends, money, health, you name it.
At this point, I am convinced that any other abundance or self-improvement course is simply a detour to the final destination. Larry Crane's Abundance Course propels the serious reader along the straight and narrow path to goal achievement. Instead of dwelling on the "ifs," "buts," and "whys," enjoy your abundance today by learning and applying the Release Technique.
I recommend this to just about everyone I know, both online and off line, because results happen FAST -- and that's what we're all looking for!
Abundance review.......2007-05-25
I am extremely pleased with this book. I already have seen good changes and look forward to more.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful and Insightful, format could use work........2007-06-22
I found the book to be very helpful for negotiating in all aspects of life. The book is written by a father/daughter team who wrote more from personal experience and interviews than research. I found their style to be more insightful. The format is a little hard to follow, the book does not break down the most important points within chapters or key concepts for reference. Some of the very best information is buried in the text, if it were bolded or pulled out as a key concept it would stand out to the reader.
A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating: How to Convince, Collaborate, & Create Your Way to Agreement.......2006-09-07
Practical and Insightful
This is one of the best books on the topic of negotiating for women that I have seen. Since this book was written a number of "academic" books that tell you why women "don't ask" have come out but this book gives practical and useful advice from a father/daughter team on how you can negotiate successfully in any situation. If you want to actually become a better negotiator this book is for you. I highly recommend this book to all women. It was by far, the best book on negotiating that I have ever read.
Okay, but much better negotiating books out there........2006-07-12
This book has a lot of suggestions for how women can be more effective negotiators. However, if you're looking for a book to read I found Women Don't Ask by Linda Babcock to be much more insightful and a much better read.
This book is written by a man and his daughter and some parts of it come off as a bit patronizing. There are a number of instances when the daughter recounts anecdotes about how her father taught her negotiating skills that somehow just bothered me.
Women!! Buy this book. Men - you'd benefit too........2006-05-06
You'll find practical advise in clear and direct language. Highly recommended. Don't wait to read this book - if you want to stay yourself AND get what you want out of life. As quoted on page 54: "Human nature will not change" (Abraham Lincoln). Learn how to change your negotiating style, or adopt one in the first place. Wonderfully simple presentation of "Active Listening".
A woman's Manual for assertiveness training.......2005-09-19
I am sending my marked-up copy to my daughter who will be graduating from business school in the spring. Every chapter offers up a solution to negotiate a favorable outcome to get that better deal either in negotiating a job, buying a home, car or handling complex relationship issues. I wish I had read this book a decade ago! A male friend recommended it several years ago and I recently ordered it through you.

Wonderful Intro to "Western" Buddhism .......2007-07-10
I really enjoyed this book. It simplified and de-mystified Buddhism and protrayed it as a viable lifestyle/worldview for Westerners (and all people, for that matter). Reading this book genuinely brought me happiness.
Many Wise Yet Simple Lessons.......2007-04-08
This has become one of my favorite books. It is the same style that I use in my books - lots of mostly one to two page stories that all stand independently of each other. You can read them in the order presented or in any order that you'd like. Each story will teach you something about making your life a bit happier or a bit easier. I frequently tell one of her stories to my patients. "The Woman on the Beach in Guaymas" teaches the author that "There is another way to do life," in contrast with her worry oriented focus. The stories will provoke just about every emotion you experience while illustrating basic Buddhist principles related to happiness. But you needn't be a Buddhist to understand or benefit from this book. You'll have an equal opportunity to increase your happiness regardless of your religious or philosophical orientation.
The book that changed everything!.......2007-02-17
This book was given to me in 1999 by a friend. I was going through a particularly rough period at the time and she thought I might take something away from this book.
What I found was not only a book, but a whole new way of thinking, perceiving the world, and living. This book was my introduction to Buddhism and from there I have expanded in every way possible. I love the way Ms. Boorstein uses personal stories to illustrate the Buddha's teachings. I think this is what makes this book so great........it's down to earth and a common sense approach to sometimes difficult topics to explain in a way that people really understand. This book never fails to bring a smile to my face and like others who have commented, if I am having a rough day I can open this book to any page and find a single sentence that resonates and stays with me.
I've also purchased numerous copies of this book and given them away to friends who are interested in my beliefs. They always come back to me and say, "Wow.....that book was really good!" While they may not experience the dramatic life change that I did they do come away with an understanding and appreciation of my beliefs.
A useful primer on Buddhist principles.......2007-01-31
I think this is a very useful book for helping someone new to Buddhism to understand some of its essential concepts such as the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, the Five Mind Hindrances, the Divine Abodes. And Boorstein has a knoack of every so often writing a perfect little phrase that takes up welcome residence in me, such as "Our actual nature is not the passing storm. The passing storm is the passing storm. Our essence remains our essence all the time." Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that, thanks for reminding me! This book filled in several gaps in my developing understanding of how to apply Buddhist principles and practices in my life.
Must Have.......2007-01-11
This is the greatest book ever! It was loaned to me a number of years ago and I had to get a copy for myself! It's one of those books that you can open up and start feeling better instantly. I love that it's multiple short stories, so you don't have to commit to a 30 page chapter each time you open it.

Book Description
This timely compilation features 365 simple actions people can take to change the world, one day - or even five minutes - at a time. Each suggested action, in 16 "helping" categories, can be started and finished in a day or less, and none requires a cash donation. Readers may choose to accomplish a different altruistic step each day of the year, activate the same tool every day, or take actions that address a personally favored issue, such as animal welfare, or the pursuit of peace. Possibilities for compassionate service include acting as driver for a battered women's shelter, planting trees or a garden at a schoolyard, recycling running shoes into a playground surface, taking a day off from consumerism, aiding low-income students in finding grants and scholarships, helping unemployed workers put together resumes, and much more.

This Book Helped Me Help Others.......2006-05-02
"The Difference a Day Makes" is a terrific book. Karen has done a great job in communicating the importance of giving back every day. There were several new ways to give that I learned through reading this book. It is easy to read, understand and implement in your daily life. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to make a difference (and that should be everyone).
Idealism In Action.......2005-12-15
This is a nice book. It shows how simple everyday deeds can have a positive impact upon the world. Too often people who genuinely want to do something good for society honestly don't know how to go about achieving anything. This book gives great suggestions and points would-be philanthropists in the right direction.
The Difference... Helps You Make A Big Difference!.......2005-04-01
What a refreshing read - both thought provoking and resourceful, In today's "information overload" society, it's nice to have a handy resource to help me accomplish many of my personal volunteer goals without it being so much work. In fact, I'm going to buy copies for all my nieces and nephews as they are all charged with doing community service projects and, in my opinion, need to experience that "giving back," among other things, makes you feel good about yourself!
A kind of recipe collection for doing good.......2005-03-11
For some, compassionate feelings can overwhelm spare time and energy: readers with such a problem should consider The Difference a Day Makes : 365 Ways to Change Your World in Just 24 Hours a kind of recipe collection for doing good. Turn good intentions into powerful action with a guide which provides vast lists of good things which can be done in a few simple minutes or hours; from providing a resource list for a neighborhood to encouraging workplace and home use of the arts, and assisting an elder who has a pet.
Being the Difference..........2005-02-04
If, like me, you've been feeling that sending a check somehow isn't `enough', this is The resource that makes doing `more' easy.
If you're involved with inventing or organizing `service projects', it's a MUST. Definitely the handiest resource for getting your/ their imagination going anyone could possibly wish for.
And if you want to start making a difference before you even get the book, add copies for your local library and scout troops to your order. It's that great.

Like Don Miquel Ruiz, author of the bestselling book The Four Agreements, author Susan Gregg teaches readers how the ancient Toltec tradition can apply to life in the 21st century. For those who haven't watched Oprah lately, the Toltecs were an ancient race of people who flourished in Southern Mexico around 800 AD. "They were also a secret society dedicated to preserving the knowledge of the 'ancient ones,' who were great spiritual masters," according to Gregg. Gregg explains that the Toltec tradition is a way of seeing beyond our perceived sense of reality and into an unlimited world of possibility.
Since Gregg is a dedicated teacher of this exciting (and yes, even faddish) Toltec tradition, she emphasizes basic tools and specific examples rather than obscure parables and philosophies. Chapter titles such as "Letting Go of the Past," "Finding a Happiness That Lasts," and "Where to Go for Support" sound more like self-help chapters than enticing discussions of mystical beliefs. But that's Gregg's point--why make this reality-blowing tradition obscure and inaccessible when its whole purpose is that of spiritual empowerment? As a push-up-your-sleeves-and-get-started primer, it can't be beat. But if you're looking for more lyrical or pensive prose, turn to Don Miquel or Don Juan. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
When Ellen DeGeneres appeared on Oprah and spoke about the profound changes that certain Toltec principles have made in her life, Dr. Susan Gregg suddenly found herself a beneficiary of the publishing phenomena, the Oprah effect.
Dr. Gregg, author of two previous books on the Toltec, was deep in the process of writing her latest book. Now completed, The Toltec Way was created specifically to bring this ancient wisdom to readers in a way that is easily understood and that makes it applicable to modern life.
The gift of the Toltec is in being able to transcend ordinary human awareness and achieve personal freedom. Simply put, personal freedom is the ability to choose how to act rather than react to the events in your life. The three Toltec Masteries of Awareness, Transformation, and Intent are the key to transcending your limitations and experiencing yourself as the creator of your life.
This audiobook is about change and changing yourself. It emphasizes the need to take personal responsibility for the choices in your life, and it offers you a way to start on your journey even as you listen to it. And, because the wisdom to be learned is often best encountered indirectly, you will find that some of the most important knowledge is hidden in the parable-like Toltec teaching stories that are scattered throughout the program.
The Toltec speak of the mitote of the mind. The mitote is the symphony of voices that seems to clamor for your attention—all the preconceived notions, opinions, thoughts, and ideas that constantly whirl in your mind. Beyond that constant noise is a place of peace. This audiobook is your guide to finding that quiet place within yourself

Impeccable.......2007-01-29
If you like the message and writings of Don Miguel Ruiz, you will probably like this book. Susan draws from the teachings of Don Miguel, but her descriptions of his teachings are distinct and from a more feminine point of view. In fact, my first impression after reading Susan's book was how her teachings balanced as much as they expanded upon his teachings.
I especially liked Susan's metaphorical "filter system," which she uses to describe how the ego protects us from our fearful symbolic minds, but also blinds us from our silent minds that re-introduce us back into paradise. The filter system is uniquely useful way of understanding suffering without a need for an outside cause for suffering.
Susan also clearly describes and outlines the main lessons and techniques that she learned from Don Miguel. These techniques provide specific activities that are not provided in Don Miguel's original writings. Her description of these lessons provide a more personal feeling into Miguel's teaching methods.
There are so many books and teachings that mix truth with what is not truth. Susan's book follows in the spirit and impeccability of Don Miguel. She writes simply and clearly from common sense. I consider "The Toltec Way" to be a wonderful gift to the human spirit.
An excellent introduction to the Toltec masteries.......2007-01-28
Susan Gregg is one of a number of people mentored by don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, in the Toltec Eagle Knight lineage. His mentees that have published works undertook training with him over the last two decades or so, some for as little as a year part-time, others for more than ten years. They are now helping spread his work across the globe through written work and one-on-one teachings and through a Sixth Sun Foundation set up by Ruiz.
While some people may find this difficult to understand, Ruiz taught differently at different periods of his life which was a combination of not wanting the teachings to become a dogmatic belief system and also I would imagine his teachings changed as he has grown and evolved. I particularly think this is relevant with respect to the comments in this book that Ruiz taught from a perspective of 'power over' or domination. While that may have been the case when Gregg was one of his apprentices (20 years ago), I just don't get that feeling from his most recent work including his beautiful book The Toltec Prophecies. This accounts for the differences between the works of some Toltec authors Ruiz mentored (as well as some authors adding in their own ideas from other influences). Gregg was also mentored by Miguels mother, Sister Sarita (as were a few others that have published Toltec work) and this is reflected in her more feminine approach to the path that is sometimes presented in this work. (This does not detract from the approach.)
The difference between this book and some of the other Toltec books is that there is more than enough detail describing each of the concepts and tools that you can actually use them rather than it being an advertisement for the authors services. The book covers the three Toltec masteries of awareness, transformation and intent. It gives you useful tools for each and really good descriptions of The Book of Freedom, Recapitulation and tracking. It's easy to read, is not boring, uses plenty of examples to illustrate the points, has loads of practices and ideas reflect upon, useful teaching stories and is written by someone who genuinely wants to asssit you on your path.
While the tools in this book will keep you busy for a good deal of time should you wish to apply them and you can get a great deal out of this book in particular, there is however, much, much more to the Toltec path and masteries than is covered in this book (it is only meant to be an introduction) as there are literally dozens and dozens of practical tools, techniques and practices Miguel Ruiz taught his apprentices and many are not covered in detail in his student's published work. To extend beyond here, either go to more of their published works (see some recommendations below) or consider working directly with one of his students in order to get the work tailored to your situation.
The next basic book I'd recommend that gives a greater context to the path is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Toltec Wisdom (don't be fooled by it's name, it's a fine piece of work with an extensive bibliography of Toltec writings). For further detail on the Mastery of Awareness, you could look at Mastery of Awareness by Kristopher Raphael which is also quite good. Otherwise start with Gregg's earlier books Dance of Power and Finding the Sacred Self as they include more practical exercises. Victor Sanchez's teachings come from a slightly different perspective and they may interest some readers and Theun Mares comes from a different Toltec lineage and is an extremely in-depth (and much more complex and challenging IMHO) approach.
This book is an excellent introduction to the Toltec path and I highly recommend it.
My best wishes to you for your journey!
My experience with Guide .......2006-08-29
When this book came to me I was already in touch with books of Miguel Ruiz. They appealed to me; I liked the concepts, masteries of awareness, love, transformation, intention... I already incorporated four agreements - I lived it and it really improved the quality of my life. I changed myself, I paid attention to what I was doing, saying, seeing, hearing... It was just amazing experience. But, it was not enough. After that first enthusiasm and euphoria I felt stack again. I hit the ceiling and felt frustrated. Susan Gregg's books opened a new gateway. Although familiar with ideas and concepts I did not know how to go deeper, how to make that necessary breakthrough that moves me further, that brings me closer to myself, to understanding of what I am and what I really want materialized in my life. Her Guide is just what I needed. It is simple and practical. It actually tells you how and what to do. It explains in a simple way what it takes and how committed you have to be. The "awareness" I have practiced without any trouble, but the "transformation" is difficult and essential. Without daily dedication to transformation exercises there is no progress. Transformation is what gives you the possibility to cross over to another realm of being, feeling, sensing. It is tough but reachable. It takes few years and you realize it while reading the book. I am a master in digesting, accepting and even communicating these ideas to other people. I was passionate about it because I understood at some deeper level that this is what helps, make a difference and transforms ones life. The only problem is the integration of those ideas and concepts. Susan Gregg is able to convey that mastery; she opens the possibility for integration. For me that was the gift. It is not about the theory and ideas it is about living them and working towards integrating them. I consider myself still at the beginning of that road but it is a comfort to have this book to remind me, to motivate me again when I loosen up, to tell me "look in the mirror and tell yourself...", to get me back on track, to keep me work on my transformation and follow my spiritual path. Her book guides but gives you freedom to choose your path, to follow your pace. It gives you the structure that to feed with your content, with your life experiences. It gives you the key to transform and understand your experiences in a new light. To benefit from the book one has to be persistent. I do not torture myself, I do it in my own pace, but I do it. It is a very resourceful book and invaluable to those who are willing to transform their lives for better. I strongly recommend it.
Great Book!.......2005-08-12
I loved this book which I first heard on tape. It helped me see the world as it is. I'm still practicing the many suggestions for freeing ourselves from our pasts. I have given this book to several of my family and friends!
TRULY WONDERFUL!.......2003-09-13
Dr. Gregg has written a marvelous book. I savoured each page. This is not the kind of book that you can read quickly and never return to again - on the contrary - this is the kind of book that you will return to again and again. The exercises that she recommends are "non-negotiable" in my view. Changing your life is not instantaneous, it is slow and an evolution that needs to take place. The Toltec Way is absolutely necessary. We are living in a world far from peaceful and quiet-and to be able to attain this within yourself is a wonderful gift. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is searching for happiness. Begin here.

Customer Reviews:
Groundbreaking approach.......2007-10-09
This is a ground-breaking method in the treatment of depression by combining C.B.T. with Buddhist mindfulness practice. The descriptions and exercises for meditating have helped me to overcome my resistance(s) to practice. I also have discovered "moving meditation" that can be done with walking, swimming, whatever to reach a result that is even more enlightening than classic sitting meditation practice.
I also realize from my past deep depressions that any practice seems hard because it is extremely difficult to overcome "inertia" and cut through the cognitive "fog" symptoms that accompany the disease. Hopefully, the moving meditation practice and some simple cognitive practices described here could be effective even under the duress of a full blown relapse.
This book is also very well written and clearly readable.
VERY DIFFERENT.......2007-09-17
This book is very different from most books on depression that I have read and there have been many. Most of the books try and help you worry your way through depression. This book says you need to think about other things and realize that everybody is depressed at one time or another but they don't start thinking of themselves as a depressed person. This is one of the worse things you can do. It gives you breathing exercise, to try and live in the moment instead of always feeling bad about the past or worrying about the future. Just that much has helped me. There is cd that goes along with some of the teaching exercises which is very helpful in fact I don't know of too many books that have a cd to go with it or a cd that has a book that goes with it. This book and "Magnificent Addiction" are the 2 best books I have read that help with depression and anxiety. Addictions can many many things including being addicted to depression and anxiety.
The Mindful Way through Depression.......2007-09-03
I highly recommend this book. I have suffered from depressed for a long time, and I am always looking for new ways to cope with my depression. I found this book to be most helpful in describing useful techniques to deal with my depression. The book is written in very layman language and is easily understandable. To my knowledge the four professionals who wrote this book collaborated their ideas, and came up with a scheme that was relatively easy to follow. I take anti-depressant medications that enable me to get up to "base line", but after that, if I do not have some way of facing every day problems, I find myself in the dump of depression again.
This book helps me to stay up, and not slip back too far into depression. Medications are very helpful, but by themselves, they can not keep one at base line (or what some people call "normal.") Once we reach base line, we depressed persons, need help in staying at that level. The teachings of this book definitely has helped me in this endeavor.
I do not say this book totally cured me of depression (I don't think anything ever will.) However, the information in the book has been a big help to me, and I can cope with depression much better than I did before I read the book.
Being versus Doing.......2007-08-20
This book will help all of us who are caught up in the continual pressure to do, and who are never able to rest and be ourselves. From reading the Mindful Way through Depresssion you can learn the practical wisdom of Buddhist meditation practice and ways of bringing the wisdom and awareness you gain into the course of day to day living. The CD provides an essential guide to actual practice. If you use it you can fulfil your own innermost self and function more effectively in the "Doing" World.
Practice and mor practice.......2007-08-20
This book is a real guide for whom need a help to better life, the most brilliant this book are the chapters 9 and 10 where the authors give us a self-guided meditation for take it in the bad moments, and no necessarily in the night or sunrise.
good book, and for best results, you need practice and practice, best as you can.
Best regards
Daniel
