Consider another book........2006-08-15
Butler's Lives of the Saints: New Concise Ed., edited by Paul Burns, ISBN 0-8146-2903-2, Copyright 2003
Consider another book. Despite "Butler's" being in the title, it seems to bear no relation to the Butler's Lives of the Saints published in the 1950s and 1800s.
Defects:
1. There is no index or alphabetical list of saints. If you want to look up a saint by name, you have to scan the list of 366 saints in the table of contents, which is six pages long. An index would have provided quick access.
2. Saints are not listed under their actual commemoration day. Why? Because the saints did not "die on conveniently spaced dates" (page xi). Nothing in the description of the saint alerts you to the date being wrong. To determine the correct day, you have to closely read a paragraph at the beginning of the month.
3. The book does not bear an imprimatur from a bishop or "nihil obstat" showing that it's free from error. To illustrate why this is a problem, one-third of the entry for St. Maria Goretti is not about her; it's a critique of her sainthood and of the Church. Example: in "feminist circles ... Maria has been seen more as a martyr to patriarchal society" (p. 310).
Old heroes to learn about.......2006-07-16
It has been nearly fifty years since I read this book. I had forgotten how much detail Butler placed in his research of the lives of the saints. Although my mind has moved more towards agnosticism, it is of great interest for me to read how the Church appreciated the lives of some of its past members. I am now trying to read of the saints related to that day, but alas my schedule is too busy to read the entire selection.
all 12 volumes.......2006-02-04
This edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints presents its subjects in a vibrant, sober and (as required by the genre) brief way. The books are like the Litany of the Saints invoking these memorable Christians and giving readers a picture of the communion of saints. They came from every time and place. They represent all of human variation. The series does not shy away from presenting weaknesses along with admirable qualities. This clearly comes from the conviction that God's grace does not work only in ideal people, but every variety of person can be a saint.
Butler's Lives of the Saints.......2005-09-08
The rating of 3 stars does not reflect THE BOOK - actually, I have another copy of this book and love it. However, I ordered (I THOUGHT) A LARGE PRINT EDITION. Your presentation on line was very confusing. I requested large print offerings, and, found that not everything that came up for perusal was large print. I made the mistake of selecting what I thought WAS large print only to find, upon receipt, that it was not. I was purchasing this book as a gift for my neighbor who desired a book about the lives of the saints in large print because he is legally blind and cannot read the normal type. For that reason I rated my experience as a 3 because I am disappointed. I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A BOOK ABOUT SAINTS IN LARGE PRINT AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME. R. Ford
Sorry, I think it's awful.......2004-07-07
Paul Burns is, according to the book jacket, distinguished only by the fact he has a "first-class degree in modern languages" (whatever that is), and has translated many books about liberation theology.
He systematically attacks all of the greatest Catholic saints, like the Cure d'Ars (an "intransigent moralizer"), saint Joan of Arc (maybe she didn't exist!), saint Rose of Lima (she had mental problems), all missionaries ("cultural imperialists!"), etc. Cheers! (www.inquisition.ca)
Book Description
By the coauthor of the best-selling book Jesus Freaks, this daily devotional features hundreds of stories of ancient to modern day believers--many of whose stories are published here for the first time--who sacrificed everything for Christ. Each true account concludes with a life application and a Bible verse to challenge you to live out your own extreme devotion.

Jesus Freaks repackaged?.......2007-08-16
I was a bit disappointed with this book since a majority of the stories that I have read so far appear in the Jesus Freak books. Also, condensing the full stories of these amazing heroes of faith into little bite size devotional nuggets seems to lose some of the impact. That being said, Voice of The Martyrs is a great organization to support anyways, so go ahead and buy it.
Amazing!.......2003-03-13
This is a great book! I got it for Christmas and I have not missed a day of reading it. It will totally change the way you live your life, and make a big impact on your faith. It will make you bolder for Christ, and more thankful for all you have.
I highly reccommend this book to everyone, you'll love it!
Heart wrenching and inspiring.......2002-08-09
This beautiful book (the cover and interior are designed beautifully) will break your heart and inspire you at the same time. You'll be amazed at the perseverance of Christian brothers and sisters around the world who have been persecuted for Christ. The layout in 1-page readings with scriptures and life applications is terrific. Get this book.
THIS BOOK WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD!.......2002-01-30
Over and over as you read this book, you are challenged.
As I read each day's devotional I see an example of incredible, sacrificial faith in Jesus Christ. And each day I am pushed to ask myself: do I have that kind of faith?
What a challenge! And the stories are incredible and well told. I was struck by the variety of people who have faced the ultimate questions and answered firmly by following Christ's call to take up our crosses. Each day's reading features a story of a Christian, an application thought, and a scripture verse.
The Voice of the Martyrs has done a great job of presenting this material in a challenging way.
I especially like it that the days are numbered, instead of dated, so that you can easily start using this devotional any day of the year. That makes it a practical purchase or gift any time of year, not just around January 1.
Great book! Great challenge! Don't pick it up unless you're willing to face tough questions and have your life and faith changed.
Very Nice...........2002-01-18
The book is organized into 365 daily readings, with each topic referencing someone who displayed "extreme devotion" even to the point of laying down theirs or a loved ones' life.
Nicely organized with side scriptures and commentary on the day's story.
I highly recommend. I just started reading, so I've only covered about 14 or more stories to date, but I look forward to spending time with the book each day!

Do you want to be Devoted?.......2007-03-03
This is an important book. I am a recent convert to the Catholic Church. I grew up in a protestant denomination and Mary was someone who appeared for a couple of weeks at Christmas and then faded back into the dust of first century christianity. She was just one of many players in the drama of God. This book blows that shallow understanding to bits. Over the past year I have been getting to know my Mother. This book came to my attention only recently and I can not put it down! I will say this, one must read this book with faith. This is a very deep book, yet beautifully simple. It is a love story of devotion and courage. This book is a high calling to know Jesus in a way one may have never imagined possible.
Peace,
Keith
A masterpiece written by the Holy Spirit Himself.......2007-01-18
This is, in my opinion, the greatest single book ever written on the Blessed Virgin. It is, in reality, like a compendium of all that the Holy Catholic Church had taught on devotion to the Blessed Virgin up to that moment, although nothing has really been added since then. In 215 pages it explains everything you need to need about TRUE devotion to the Virgin - it even explains false devotions, such as hypocritical devotees etc - and the crucial importance, by the will of God, of Mary in salvation history. You can clearly get the impression when reading this magnificent book that the author was not really the one who physically wrote down the words, St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, but in reality the Holy Ghost himself acting through this servant of God. This book is an absolute must for anyone who wishes to better his/her spiritual life. Needless to say, I think everyone should read this book - sinners and saints alike. For sinners, as a way to escape from spiritual ruin, and for saints, as a way to reach perfection which otherwise is very difficult to reach without a deep devotion to Our Lady. This book definitely has the power to change the life of the one who reads it. As St Alphonsus de Liguori stated, "Only God knows the power of reading a good book" and this book certainly falls in this category.
Beautiful Way to Enrich Your Spiritual Journey.......2007-01-09
This book offers a depth of insight into the life of our Lord and the relationship between Jesus and Mary as well as between Mary and ourselves. It discusses her deep love and devotion to us as our spiritual mother, and how she brings us closer to her Son. This book is life-changing and is a wonderful way to deepen your spirituality and to grow closer to Jesus.
True Devotion to Mary.......2007-01-05
This beautiful book is one that I bought many copies of to send to family and friends. It is a wonderfully real way to see Our Blessed Lady and her role as the Mother of our Lord. A book that will not only be in my library forever, but in my bed-side table as a reference.
A Masterpiece!.......2006-12-17
This wonderful little book provides a guide to becoming closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through His Blessed Mother. Contained herein are both explantions as to how and why we can come closer to Divine Intimacy through our Lady and a discipline of devotions to cause this to happen. The writing, though archaic, is timelessly beautiful. And the message could not possibly be more important given the fallen state of our world today. Hail, Mary full of grace!

Consecration to Our Blessed Mother.......2007-07-04
For the person who is seeking the meaning of what is Consecration to Our Lady and what is the process , I would suggest that they look no further than this book. It is intended for those who are seriously considering this spiritual activity/commitment and who require explicit guidelines and a sense of being completely informed. It is in its own way a course on the topic.
Not only for Pius X.......2006-11-06
A wonderful guide to starting on the road to holiness.
Regardless of whether or not this book is held in esteem by the Society of Pius X (not opening the debate on whether or not the society is schismatic), this devotion has been accepted and recommended by the Church long before Vatican II, and has continued to be recommended by holy priests who remained under Rome after Vatican II. This is simply a complete collection of the writings that Saint Louis Marie de Montfort recommends. It is crucial that we, as Catholics, do not discourage it.
NOT AGAINST CHURH DOCTRINE.......2006-08-19
The actual book is written by a saint according to the Catholic Church. The break away group that another review talks about are considered break away because they want to continue to hold mass in the Pre-Vatican II mode, but not because their doctrinal beliefs are wrong. In any case the actual writting is translated from St. Louis De Montfort who is still deemed as a great saint and furthermore this consecration by formula of Montfort is done and esteemed by many excellent Priests. Pope John Paul II said Montfort's Formula changed his life and started his path towards sanctity
Most helpful devotion to go to Heaven.......2003-04-28
Human Beings ignore that every day of their life they advance toward their death and what there is after. Even if they ignore it, they head for that. And if they know that, even if they don't want it, they go toward it because God wants it and nobody can resist his will which is competent for everybody WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTION (we will see God who will tell us either: "it is well, Good servant come in the Joy of your Lord" either: "withdraw from bad servant, I don't know you").
And if we say all these things, we can't say the contrary because between two things which contradict each other, one only can be respectable and the other can be rejected: error is not respectable; it is false to think that there is nothing after death and there is no liberty in this thought (God did not ask before our birth if we wanted to live or not: it is the same thing for the death and after the death: there is no truth stronger than that). Freedom is only in truth and not in some false choices as modern man pretends.
Because the most important is to go to heaven and because all happiness on earth is nothing compared to the hapinness of Heaven. On the opposite, because misfortune of hell is very much more horrible compared to all of the most horrible misfortunes of this earth, it is very important to find a means to go to heaven. There is nothing better than the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is wonderful and powerful with God who is his Son. His Son can't stand that our Mother is insulted or offended. But he loves a lot those who love her. Because she has a great influence on her Son and because She prevented him from chastising Human Beings for their iniquities, it is the most useful, the most helpful devotion that we can have. She is so sweet, so kind that she can obtain all the things that we ask if it is conformed to the will of God who doesn't want any evil.
Dear readers, I hope that you will take care of these truths which are not invented by anybody but before we lived on this earth, they existed already and they existed before the very beginning of this world in the mind of God.
The Book of Saint louis de Montfort help to be full of them.
I hope that at the end you will go to heaven which is much less far than we think... Many Human Beings die when they don't plan it: it is a very actual fact that God comes always like a thief; today more than 5000 persons died: where are they now? Only God knows, the only holy thief. And tomorrow it will be the same thing and so on until the end of times. When will this day (terrible for sinners and sweet for those who bravely fighted on earth) happen to us? Let us be ready for this day which can be tomorrow... And the best means is the Blessed Virgin Mary. The book of Saint Louis de Montfort is very good to eliminate all the things which displease to God (only sins displease him and we sin everyday). Let God have mercy on us not only in this world where his mercy is evident but in the other world where alas very few people find it because gate which leads to Heaven is very narrow. God bless you who hear the true word of God.
It is only in his Church which is the Catholic Church that we find the Truth. The Church condamned many heresies like protestantism and many false religions where God is not the Master but arranged by Human Beings and put with other divinities: how can God stand it because he knows that he is alone and there is no several gods in Heaven but only him. Who would enjoy it in his place? It seems like scoffing at him to put divinities equal to him as they are nothing more than fiction beings in the imagination of men. Do you enjoy to be mocked? I don't think so. God doesn't enjoy either.
And for those who don't hear it, I wish from all my heart that you will convert one day before it is too late to the true faith without mixing that with any error that God hates (modern world does that all the time). Hatred of God is so strong that I don't wish you to be in its range because you will feel it alas eternally. And don't laugh for God warned us: "Misfortune to you who laugh because you will cry". But I wish you to labor in this world: "Happiness to you you cry because you will laugh" he also said.
God uses those who are crazy to confuse those who are wise. If you are wise and if I am crazy now (because these truths are crazy for the world), in the other world, I will be wise and you will be crazy, not for a short time like now but for eternity. 2000 years, it is nothing, it is not even the beginning of eternity...
Let Our Mother enlighten you, it is what I wish you from my heart of hearts because for anybody I don't wish hell. And I pray with other catholics who have the true catholic faith for you very much, dear readers. Have a true devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and you will be saved.
Not approved by the Church.......2001-01-03
Catholics thinking about purchasing this book should know that it is written and published by representatives of the break-away organization the "Society of St. Piux X," that the book bears neither an Imprimatur nor Nihil Obstat from Catholic bishops, and that its contents and commentaries are not necessarily conforming to Catholic doctrine.

This is a must read for any serious Catholic.......2000-06-29
St. Louis DeMontfort had alot of insight into the mysteries of our Catholic faith in regards to Mary our Mother. If you want to get to know Mary, read St. Louis' works. This book is a collection of all of his works - which means that this is the book for you!
Book Description
Centuries ago, Francis de Sales–bishop of Geneva during the lifetime of many first generation Protestant Calvinists–wrote about the importance of having a spiritual director. Yet he later told his biographer such a person “would be difficult to find,” suggesting that in these circumstances, “We can look for guidance among the books of authors who are no longer living. Devotional books are our best Directors.”
Today, de Sales serves as such a spiritual director to countless modern day believers, and his Introduction to the Devout Life is recognized as one of the truly great works of devotional literature. Originally written as a series of letters of religious guidance, this enduring book is filled with thoughtful spiritual illustrations and radiates with a warm humanity that touches people of all religious backgrounds.
A classic masterpiece of spiritual writing, de Sales’ book is acknowledged to be among the top handful of guides to Christian living. No matter where readers are in their spiritual development–whether they are beginners or skilled theologians–this modern interpretation, an “honest paraphrase” of de Sales’ work, will gently guide them down the clearest path imaginable into a deeper and more authentic religious life.

Book Description
Explores the connection between ancient druidic worship of a virgin at Chartres and the veneration of the Black Madonna
• Examines the Virgin Mary’s origins in the pagan worship of the Mother Goddess
• Identifies Mary with the dominant solar goddess of matriarchal societies
The great cathedral of Chartres is renowned the world over as a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and for its remarkable stained glass, considered alchemical glass, and its mystical labyrinth. But the sacred foundations of this sanctuary go back to a time long before Christianity when this site was a clearing where druids worshiped a Virgo Paritura: a virgin about to give birth. This ancient meeting place, where all the druids in Gaul gathered once a year, now houses the magnificent Chartres cathedral dedicated both to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and to one of the most venerated Black Madonnas in Europe: Our Lady of the Pillar. Coincidence? Hardly, says Jean Markale, whose exhaustive examination of the site traces Chartres’ roots back to prehistoric times and the appeal of the Black Madonna back to the ancient widespread worship of Mother Goddesses such as Cybele and Isis.
Markale contends that the mother and child depicted by the Black Madonna are descended from the image worshipped by the druids of the Virgin forever giving birth. This image is not merely a representation of maternal love--albeit of a spiritual nature. It is a theological notion of great refinement: the Virgin gives birth ceaselessly to a world, a God, and a humanity in perpetual becoming.
Customer Reviews:
Jean Markale is Brilliant.......2005-10-27
I love this man and wish more of his books were translated into English. His insight is phenonemal as well as his research. A must read 'before' your trip to Chartres. It arrived after I returned last year, but encouraged me to go again this year.
A stunning labyrinth of discovery.......2005-05-07
Jean Markale's books are an amazing journey of discovery through philosophy, gnosis, and the wonderful world of esoterica. He is a mystic and a scholar, he is a teacher and a guide. Markale will never force his conclusions upon you, rather he leads you to them and makes you think and feel for yourself. There is no dogma in his work, only wisdom. While he researches with the thorough tenacity of the most intrepid academic, he is never pendantic or stodgy in his conclusions.
There are layers of fascinating historical information within, the kind of detail that isn't found in a library, but that comes from Markale's lifelong love of his French homeland and the folklore and cultures that he was raised in. This is wisdom firsthand. It is experiential and real.
If you have an interest in ancient cultures, goddess worship, the sacred nature of the cathedrals and those who built them, and the path of Gnosis, there is much to love in this book. But don't expect a linear, typical journey. Markale is a genius, and he would never do anything that obvious.
Read it, put it away and read it a few months later. You will see something within it that you did not see before.
Book Description
Tracing devotion to Mary to psychological and historical processes that began in the fifth century, Carroll answers questions about why Mary is both "Virgin" and "Mother" simultaneously, why Marian apparitions have been reported over the centuries, and more. 12 tables.

Mixing Freud and Religion.......2000-12-04
This book will be a hard read for the Catholic Marian faithful, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets Mr. Carroll on quite a few lists of books to avoid. However, I would like to speak in his defense. First of all this is a book written by a social scientist for social science. It is full of terms that are well understood in the disciplines but that are negatively loaded (One might even say explosive) when read from the standpoint of Catholic Devotional literature. For instance Mr. Carroll describes St. Bernadette Soubirous' Marian aparition, as a halucination. Within the context of his analysis, this is an appropriate psychological term, as nobody else could see the aparition. However to the religious this term invalidates the experience, it makes it unreal. This was clearly not the intention of Mr. Carroll. His research is well documented and his theories well supported. His analysis and arguments are complete. They are thoroughly presented, almost to the point of redundancy. And the fact of the matter is that it works. When we are through with the book we have a deeper understanding of the forces that shape Catholic worship and Marian devotion. I like this book. I have passed it along to friends and family and it has stimulated hours of discussion, debate and even red-faced argument. This book should be read by serious Marian scholars.
Can we put negative signs in front of the stars?.......2000-04-12
This book was really really amusing... if you like reading psychobabble. If we could put negative signs in front of the stars, this baby would have -5 stars.
Not worth it.......1999-09-27
This book attempts to analyze Catholic Marian devotion using Freudian psychology, and many of its strange conclusions arise from this approach. For instance, the author argues that Mary appeals to Catholic men because they have an "oedipal" need for a mother, while she appears to Catholic women because she fulfills their (alleged) "subconscious desire" to have a child by their fathers (since Catholics believe that Mary bore the Son of God the Father). While his conclusion about men may have some validity (we all need a spiritual Mother) his conclusion about women is absurd (Freud was never right about women anyway). I am a Catholic mother, and I have spoken to many Catholic mothers like myself, and the reason why we love Mary - besides the fact that she is our Mother in heaven - is because we can relate to her as a mother and feel that she knows what we are going through, since she too had a family. This guy just doesn't have a clue!
His analysis of Marian apparitions is similarly awful; the author simply ignores any historical details of the apparitions which do not fit his pat theories. The treatment of Guadalupe is perhaps the worst; he claims that the apparitions to Juan Diego are a myth, and that they were never recorded until long after the event! The fact is, there *are* contemporaneous documents which mention the apparition; a little research would have confirmed that. And Juan Diego *is* a historical personage; in fact he was recently beatified by the Catholic Church. The pope does not beatify mythological characters!
Don't even bother reading this book; there are much better treatments of the subject.
