Book Description
In the course of our lives, we discover the wisdom of Ecclesiastes -- for everything there is a season. Now this master storyteller delights us with tender, often humorous stories that celebrate the seasons of divine grace in our sometimes turbulent lives.
Filled with a cast of loveable and quirky characters and punctuated with simple miracles, the truths of life in this small town speak with uncanny clarity to our own befuddled world. No matter where you live, no matter what your season, you are invited to come along for the journey to where all is in place under heaven.

a book to make you smile.......2007-06-28
What a great book about the sweet simple side of life. It made me want to move to the author's small town and settle in with my family. I have enjoyed everything I have read so far by this author.
A little harmonious chuckle.......2005-08-21
As usual, Philip Gulley writes in a sweet, simple, amusing way that causes one to long for a kinder world. Reading this book is a worthy way to spend some time.
Really a guidebook to living well!.......2004-10-19
You know, in our fast-paced, full of activity lives, we rarely pause to truly appreciate what we've been granted. In this book, the author closely combines the chapters of Old Testament Ecclesiastes to everyday life. I find I'm proud of myself for purchasing this book to use as a reference tool when I feel I need to ground myself (a very frequent occurrance) and look at my actions, feelings and behavior. Although I'm far from where I want to be, a regular "tune up" of putting my brain on the right track really helps.
As usual, Gulley has touched yet another string in the harp of life. He brings things into focuse better than I could and helps the reader gain perspective and appreciation of God's gifts. Definitely worth the cash outlay and a great book to give as a gift.
A great read!.......2004-05-25
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a gentle read, a confirmation that good still prevails and a sense of peace. Reminds me of the Dorsetville series by Katherine Valentine.
A wonderful read.......2004-02-12
This book is a joy! There are so many lessons one is reminded of throughout the book - most often in a humorously subtle way. The stories Mr. Gulley shares bring a sense of peace to the reader and the feeling that, in the end, everything will
be ok. A wonderful read!

A True Blessing for Everyday Life.......2000-01-18
I've found "For Everything A Season" a profound blessing in itself. As a Lutheran pastor, I eagerly seek ways to effectively empower the people who gather together with me in worship and service. Too often spirituality evaporates under the stress and distraction of daily life. "For Everything a Season" offers a collection of simple, creative, adaptive opportunities to consciously integrate the sacred every day. The range of blessings is delightful, and their simple honesty is refreshing. I've used them many times as I've met with people in joy and in sorrow, in struggle and in celebration. I use them daily in my personal worship. I commend this marvelous collection to you.
Book Description
Once nobody noticed Santa Rosa's Thunder. They were a ragtag team of girls who wanted to play soccer, and no one took them seriously. Their male coach expected little from his "ladies, " and their mediocre performance convinced them he was right.
Then a kind of miracle happened. Emiria Salzmann, Thunder's new coach, a top player herself, knew what it took to win--discipline, relentless drills, thigh-burning sprints, and an inspired passing game. The girls hated it, but their coach never let up. Tough and determined, she showed them what it felt like to be winners--and they loved it. As the momentum grew with a string of victories, the girls thrived on the competition, believing they had the right stuff to become champions.
They were right! With spirits soaring, Thunder won its league on the last day of the season and headed for the state cup, emerging not just as powerful athletes but as strong, confident, emotionally healthy human beings--champions in the game of soccer, and in the game of life.

The Beautiful Game.......2006-12-08
The Beautiful Game by Jonathan Littman is a very compelling and well described book. It is very easy for me to relate because as a soccer play I have won state cup three times. I can also relate because I know the journey and the obstacles you have to overcome to be a champion. I relate best to the player Kim because she had to suffer with an injury, exactly what i have been going through. I think why I liked this book so much is because I have a lot in common with these girls, and I have a love and passion for soccer. I recommend this book to any soccer player, or anybody who is chasing after a dream.
An Absolute Inspiration.......2005-09-15
I think this book, The Beautiful Game, was an extraordinary display of a group of 14-year-old girls, who came together as a magnificent soccer team, to overcome a new coach, and many of the road bumps they had on the highway to success. This soccer team was extremely committed and dedicated, not only to the game of soccer, but to each other. And that is the key to playing competitive club soccer. I especially enjoyed this story about this club team called Thunder, because I also play club soccer in Dallas, Texas. My club is called the Dallas Texans (West). I am a '92, which makes me 14 in January. I was incredibly inspired by this book to train as hard as I can, and I learned that getting along with my team is very important. I was also very interested in this book because it must have taken a lot of courage to accomplish what these girls did. I was very fascinated by how well this book was written, and how much I felt like I knew every one of the girls on this team. I think I enjoyed this book because I can relate it to my own experiences. But I don't think you have to be a soccer player to have you heart touched by the lives of the girls in this story. And I also don't think you have to be an athlete to be inspired by the soccer these girls learned to play. This book should be passed down from generation to generation. The Beautiful Game is a phenomenal display of what soccer and true friendship is really about. I overall enjoyed this book because of its amazing life story of the club soccer team Thunder, and its talented 14-year-old players.
I was there........2004-04-19
I am the mom of one of the players and have just recently re-read this book about my daughter's team. Looking back on our Thunder experience, I know that it was a unique, almost surreal experience. At the time, we knew it was special but of course, you can't fully appreciate it until it is over. After winning State Cup, Thunder continued to grow and develop as a team, winning several major tournaments and getting back to the State Cup finals in 2000 only to lose to the Placer Sharks. I still see many of the girls and most agree that Thunder was an experience that shaped their life. It wasn't just the soccer or the incredible success the team had, it was more than that. It was the relationships, the experience, and the unique bond that is formed when a group comes together with a unifying goal. It is that undefinable, special something that takes just a talented team and makes it into a great team. So, for those readers that wonder, did it work out okay? I think, for the families that I am close, that yes, yes it did. We are better for the experience.
Inspiring, Amazing.......2003-11-17
This was one of th most fantasic books I have read in a while. It show how deticated you have to be to go all out in a sport and how good you can get if you have a good coach. I read the book, and a year later I got a really tough coach. I was temted to quit the team because of the endless running but I remembered how much the coach in this book put the tea through and how far they got, and I kept with it. I have gotten really far and I am still on the team. This is the most wonderful and well written book about teen soccer out there.
Disappointing Beauty.......2003-07-03
I am a girls high school and club coach and I had high hopes for this book, maybe for inspiration, maybe for insight or ideas on how to train my players. I came out with neither. This is a typical story of undisciplined kids that get someone to discipline them and then they become successful. It is very, very close to the same story line and tactics in the movie Hoosiers, only with a young girls soccer team. It does throw in some interesting perspectives about club team rivalries and California soccer, but they are not relevant to other states soccer experience. The types of teams and seasons overlapping do not happen in any state around me.
I agree with a previous post that if it was told 5 years after the season and through the eyes of the players it might be a little better. But we never relly know how it affected the kids. How did it help them? How did it help them mature as adults? Where are they now?
Most important to me is the impression this might leave for other coaches. This is not necessarily the best way to deal with a girls team. Sometimes it works, others it doesnt. I hope this does not encourage all coaches to do this with girls teams...
The positive about his book is in the things parents could learn from this book. I did think the dealing with parents and the attitudes of some parents was humorously accurate. I would suggest all soccer parents read this book and I would suggest players might learn some from this book. But it really could have been alot better...
Book Description
The well-loved words of Ecclesiastes take on new life and meaning in the sun-baked rural setting of a South African homestead. Sowing, planting, and reaping through the wet and dry seasons, going to market, day-to-day dealings with neighbors and acquaintances, love and hostility, the sadness of mourning and the joy of celebration with family and friends — Judy Daly portrays an ageless world, studded with color and miniature detail, in this very special book.

Same as For Everything There Is A Season.......2006-03-28
This book is a literal reprint with a new cover and new title of Frank Craighead's previous book "For Everything There Is A Season". If you're interested in the natural history of the greater Yellowstone region or in the correlations of natural events then one of these are a must have addition to your library. But they are identical with nothing more than a cover and title change so do not buy both.
The book is great, but buyers should be aware that it is an exact reprint with a new jacket and a new title. I certainly wouldn't have purchased an exact copy of a book already in my library and feel that Amazon and the publisher should make this clear.
A Biologist's Lovesong to Wyoming.......2001-08-16
As one who was first shown the Northern Lights, alerted to a bull elk's bugle, and introduced to Blue Flax (Linum lewisii) by Frank Craighead, and one favored with the chance to rent a cabin from him facing the Tetons and to enjoy many hours of conversation and dinners with him and his family, I feel qualified to say that this rare book, FOR EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, is a portrait of the man as well as the biologist. With an almost poetic passion (but minus sentimentality), Frank shares with us the intricate details of biotic life in the Grand Teton-Yellowstone ecosystems---what "events" occur coinstantaneously and may signal the occurence of what OTHER events, within each given season and "subseason". His knowledge of these interrelationships is transfixing to the amateur naturalist (like myself!), and inspiring. The flow of Life itself brims from this book. And while he could easily hoard such choice hints as where and when to find morel mushrooms or certain rare flowers, he doesn't: He is generous in trusting his readers to not harm the biota they discover via his book. A better homage and resource book for this region could not be found.

For if you can love nature, you will want to save it; And I see that as one of Frank's primary goals. Yet he is generous, not hoarding, in his knowledge of secret sites where exciting biota interact: He could easily withold where and at what exact time of year one finds morel mushrooms or certain unusual flowers, but he doesn't. He trusts the reader enough to not harm what he discovers through Frank's book. A valuable, valuable read and resource. There could not be any better for that region.
Science and Celebration.......2000-03-25
For anyone who's in love with the land of the Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Craighead's book is required reading. What a joy to follow the changes of the seasons and the cycle of birth and migration of the area's animals with this knowledgeable man as a guide! Craighead focuses on weekly changes in climate and life, and each week is brimming with details of flora and fauna. I am constantly learning about my home, but this book isn't just for Jackson Hole dwellers - there are vivid photos on every page and extensive appendices for birders and amateur ecologists, as well as mammoth additional reading lists and a detailed index. Thanks, Frank.

To everything there is a season
A time to cry, a time to laugh
A time to mourn, a time to dance
The words of this timeless song, drawn from the wisdom of Ecclesiastes and made famous in the '60s by the Byrds, are beautifully illustrated here by award-winning artist Bob Barner. Barner's joyful torn-paper collages much praised in his previous book, Dem Bones offer a thoughtful interpretation of the song's simple yet powerful message.

Captivated by the illustrations.......2005-12-01
I am continually amazed at how much my 16-month old baby is attracted to this book. He loves the illustrations and begs for it to be read to him. I don't know what makes this book more special than others for him, but he really loves the pages and colors. We both enjoy the timeless message.
RAVE!.......2005-09-18
To Everything-I bought it to read to my child to help him cope with the death of his Grandfather-reading it out loud helped me as much or more-I read it again and again to remember that "To Everything, there is some sort of reason that I may never understand but life is a balance-or that it will be.
Great for very young children!.......2000-05-02
This is the favorite book of my 4-month old infant, and one of the only books for she will sit still! She loves the bright colors and contrasts of this book, and the repetitive, sing-songy words. I highly recommend this book for readers of all ages!
Inspiring, Colorful, Awesome!.......1998-12-26
The book basically sums up everything there is to life. It takes a very simple, important message and portrays it in vivid images. It's great!

The seasons of life.......2004-06-17
Most authors, personal devlopment trainers teach the how to or the why to. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. WAITLEY teaches the when to. Read this book to learn the seasons of life and reach your dreams.
Advocate of Excellence!.......2003-10-24
The entire message of the book is summarized on page 8, where he writes "...there is a sequence of success for each project and for each area of your life. These sequences frequently overlap from one area to the next." Timing is seen as something over which the individual has a degree of control. Success if viewed as a process rather than a product. He notes "...success is a way of traveling, not a destination" (p. 9).
The four seasons; winter, spring, summer, and autumn serve as the demarcation points in this book.
I love his description of dreams. He tells us "Dreams and goals are previews of coming attractions in your life" (p. 12).
Dreams of young children are not to be taken lightly. He observes "In many cases, childhood dreams hold the key the a person's true cache of talents, abilities, and motivation" (p. 36).
His discussion of goal-setting and attainment is worth special consideration. He advises, "From this point forward, choose to do only the things that bring you closer to your goals" (p. 59).
As part of enjoying the process toward achieving significant goals, he says reward yourself along the way for intermediate goals as they're accomplished. That's solid reasoning that helps one maintain morale as the pursuit continues.
He quotes Bob Smullin as saying he never met a man or woman with a clear focus who ever had a time management problem. Consequently, a person who doesn't know how to prioritize is one who lacks focus.
Dr. Waitley says annual goals should be broken down into quarterly goals, then further broken down into smaller units.
He makes an observation that I've seen in students as I've observed some with productive habits and others who seemed to live by default, being victims of circumstance. He writes "It takes just as much effort to lead a bad life as it does to lead a good one" (p. 119).
Consider this powerful quote from him on living well daily, "Thus also, day by day, we write our own destiny inexorably like the rings on a tree, we become what we do" (p. 148).
Maintaining relationships with the right kind of people is part of the success process.
Near the book's conclusion he points out that our success benefits other people. He describes life as a responsibility in that it helps other people.
I recommend this book as highly as I can. It is full of sound advice.
Book Description
To Everything There is a Season is a joyous and sometimes light-hearted account of a psychotherapist and her creation of a woodland garden which slowly evolved into a spiritual place of growth for the soul. The author shares her hands-on experience of planning, planting and nurturing a garden of beauty and serenity. The result is a celebration of the joys of being at one with the earth. With sensitivity and warmth, Alice Miller shows us how to make it all happen as she moves with ease from horticulture to humor to spirituality. This is a story about garden paths - themselves a metaphor for life. The book begins with the gardens of youth and then moves on to the creation of a real woodland garden and the author's subsequent spiritual journey. These garden paths serve as a vehicle for guiding the reader through the growing process, both literally and metaphorically. The story is told not in the abstract but rather in a personal and self-disclosing narrative. At the core of this book is a strong Judeo-Christian perspective. This view may not, however, always qualify as spiritual in the "traditional" sense. This perspective is more like life itself, as the author shares both amusing as well as profound experiences. Her humor is firmly grounded, however, in substantial and universal beliefs. Threaded through the later chapters are themes of laughter, prayer, grace and faith. The author also addresses her increasing awareness that our earthly environment must be considered as more than a "gift," but also as a sacred trust to be preserved for future generations. It is the author's intention that at the close of this book, readers will find themselves wanting to follow the path of their own garden journey. For, clearly, the message of this book is that there is a garden within each of us, simply waiting to happen. Alice G. Miller, PhD, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Potomac, Maryland. She describes herself as a therapist by profession and a gardener by spirit. A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Dr. Miller is the author of three previous books. Prior to entering private practice, she has been the Director of a Youth Crisis Center, Director of a residential treatment program, and an individual and family therapist with a psychiatric group practice.
Customer Reviews:
A great Gift Book.......2006-10-10
This is a wonderful gift book. I have already given it to several friends who share my pleasure. Alice Miller, who is a psychotherapist, combines spirituality and love of the earth with humor and wisdom.
Highly Recommend it!.......2006-09-08
I have beeb a professional landscape and garden designer for over 30 years. And this author really gets it. It's difficult to mesh inspiration with good garden design. To be able to mix whimsy, classic beauty, and good garden design is not something many people can do. Her humour and wisdom come through on every page. She really understands the dynamic process of creation when it comes to establishing a sustainable garden. Her wit kept me intertained and felt like I grew through the read. I highly recommend this book
A great read.......2006-03-21
This book really tugs at the heartstrings. Dr. Miller has a unique writing style, combining poignant observations with a quirky but delightful sense of humor. I will be gifting several friends with their own copies - this is a book to enjoy more than once.
Insight, Imagery, and Inspiration.......2006-02-22
Dr. Miller depicts the process of personal and spiritual growth through her life experiences and vividly relates them to the birth and development of her woodland garden. She shares pivotal moments in her life with poignancy and humor and in a manner that transcends age or gender. She reminds us that as humans we all are finding our way along life's garden path. Yet, Dr. Miller succeeds in balancing the garden imagery by weaving into her narrative a broad, intellectual selection of quotations and excerpts from both English literature and many different religious texts. In so doing, Dr. Miller manages to avoid denominational bias and truly focuses on an inspiring view of how to navigate life's travails while maintaining an infectious optiminism and open-heartedness.
Garden path of life.......2005-11-24
The author is right when she says you won't necessarily learn the ins and outs of gardening; however, her use of the garden as an approach to the seasons of life is marvelous. The candor and humor make the book an easy read. The content allows us to take a spiritual journey of celebrating our lives, a journey well worth taking. The poetry and writings used within the book are additional garden paths to travel and encourage the reader to delve into the works cited, especially the Bible.
