5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-10-08

This is a really great book. When my 2 year old daughter started hitting, my daycare provider suggested this book. My daughter loved reading it at bedtime and her hitting has stopped! Now she will reminder other, "Hands are not for hitting".

4 out of 5 stars Hands are not for Hitting.......2007-09-27

Hands Are Not for Hitting This book approaches the problem of toddlers hitting others and pets with imagination. Children find it fun and enjoy trying to find other things they can do with their hands without hitting. This would be a good book in an infant school library and is for anyone who interacts with toddlers on a daily basis. Will help positive development with social skills. Highly recommended for mums, dads and grandparents.

4 out of 5 stars My kids like it a lot.......2007-08-23

My kids like this book a lot. They each have a favorite page of the book, they fight over it, and they like to have it read to them. It is sturdy construction, and has not yet been destroyed or even seriously injured. On the downside, I wish that there was a better link between the words and the pictures, so that I could more easily go from reading the few words to pointing out something about the illustrations.

3 out of 5 stars good, but too wordy.......2007-08-06

This is a good book, based on the whole series. But to me, and my 28 month old son, it is too wordy. I have cut out a lot of it and picked out my own main points that deal with his behavior problems and left out a lot of other stuff. I think the board book would be better, like the others I have (Teeth Are Not for Biting and Feet Are Not for Kicking). Maybe would be better for older kids. But I still like the concept and he still enjoys it, just not as much as the other two.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointed in board book version.......2007-06-09

A previous reviewer had mentioned that the original book is more in depth, so maybe I should have opted for that version, as I was disappointed in the board book's lack of content. It tells what hands are used for, and adds in "hands are not for hitting" occasionally, but doesn't even touch on why we don't hit.

On the plus side, the book is nicely illustrated, has wonderful warm colors, and even has a small section with helpful hints for parents/caregivers on how to help your toddler deal with frustration.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Scarily good.......2005-04-05

As a layperson with next-to-no knowledge of the subject, nor any maths, algebra or statistics, I thought I'd have a lot of trouble with this book.

And yes, I did have some trouble, and yes, I would really have liked to have had a tutor and classmates to help me through the exercises.

But even so I got a great deal from it, it has lead me to read scientific papers, it has prompted me to investigate higher education possibilities - and it has made me extremely grateful for scientists!

5 out of 5 stars If you want to buy just one book.......2007-01-12

If you want to buy just one book on this subject, then this is the one

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on RSI.......2006-11-10

This is by far the best source of information and guidance on RSI that I've ever seen. It's the only book (along with dr. Pascarelli's books) that explains the true causes of RSI symptoms. It will help you understand what's happening to you if you have RSI, and it will help you manage your symptoms and find appropriate treatment. It's a must-have book if you live in an area or country where RSI specialists are hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Career saving.......2006-07-13

When I was managing a software development group, a programmer on the team showed up at work one day with wrist braces. Turns out typing had become agony for him. He read this book, then diligently and conscientiously followed some of the recommended practices (strength training, yoga, serious workplace ergonomic changes). The wrist braces are gone, and his career has been saved.

You can't fix anything just by reading a book. You *can* fix things when you understand the problem and have some ways to combat it. This book can give you both.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-02-20

I bought this book after all the glowing reports and am happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Just improving my posture (one of the suggestions) has helped with my RSI.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Want To Know Where I'd Be Without This Book.......2005-10-15

I have been putting off writing my review because I have so much to say and in the meantime my hands are not yet a hundred percent. BUT it is thanks to this book (in conjunction with THE TRIGGERPOINT THERAPY WORKBOOK, which I found later) that I am not disabled today. The doctors I went to were not only shockingly unkind but dangerously misinformed...so I feel it is my duty to pass the info. on ASAP and I will revise this review later.

It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! is the very best book out there dealing exclusively with repetitive strain injuries. What is great about this book is that it alerts you to the potential severity of the problem without terrifying you - it puts the time frame for healing easily at 6 months and possibly longer. Until I read this book, I had NO idea what was going on.

It offers charts to help you determine if you are a 1st degree, 2nd degree, or 3rd degree sufferer. It divides injuries into two basic categories: muscular and nerve. I would like to add that in my case there was also ligament injury, which was not discussed in this book. It also profiles the personality type that can become more vulnerable to this kind of an injury: perfectionist, obsessive, passionate about work.

My advice is that when it comes to books about this topic, read ABOUT them all carefully and then get all of the ones you need -even if you have to put them on a credit card, your HANDS are at stake! That being said, if you could only get two books this should definitely be one of them. Thank you so much Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis for illuminating this mysterious problem and analyzing it from a new angle.

Other Books I used and that you must look into to get a clear picture:

THE TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORKBOOK by Clair Davies. Okay, finding IT was basically a miracle, because it provided the missing piece that NONE of the other books on RSI really explore. It is the only book that helped me even more than It's not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I won't describe it here but the look inside this book feature on Amazon allows one to read the introduction. Basically, Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis got me through the first half of the healing process, and Clair Davies got me though the second half.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY by Emil Pascarelli: informative but terrifying, only read it AFTER you've read the others to better understand the dangers. But know this: braces can occasionally cause great damage, and a condition called RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Unlikely but horrific and important to be aware of so if the symptoms show up you can do something about it.

CONQUERING CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME by Sharon J. Butler: very nice exercises that seem to help a lot of people (though I was too injured by the time I found this book). Sharon Butler also has an online book dealing with DeQuervain's (a thumb injury) which was good and the only book out there specifically about this particular injury.

THE CARPAL TUNNEL HELPBOOK by Dr. Scott M. Fried: if you suspect nerve damage, this book is very encouraging about your prospects for recovery - and is the only book I found to deal exclusively with nerve issues. Also gave me the idea to just buy my own paraffin unit rather than pay for physical therapy every week.

FREE YOUR BREATH, FREE YOUR LIFE by Daniel Lewis.

LIGAMENT HEALING by William Weintraub.

FINALLY: PRISCILLA'S YOGA STRETCHES is an incredible TV program I discovered that comes on at 5:30am weekday mornings in my area on one of the PBS stations (apparently Priscilla Patrick has had exercise programs on PBS since 1980). Supposedly it is shown or can be requested all around the U.S., and it too played a critical role in helping me to heal and also maintain- better than any exercise class I've ever taken. Her videos can also be ordered (I plan to get the one called Stretch and De-Stress which targets neck, back, arms, shoulders) but I have not done so yet because with the TV show it's not really necessary.

Well, good luck and please, please, please get ALL the information you need to avert a potential disaster! Go sit in Barnes & Noble and look through these books if you're not ready to buy. But save yourself NOW. Also don't fall into despair! I was messed up for well over a year but once I had the right info I healed quite quickly! Without the work of all these amazing people I don't want to know where I'd be.

When you think of a hero, what comes to mind? Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie? Rocky, perhaps? After reading Gifted Hands, there was no doubt in my mind that Ben Carson is a hero.

The most amazing thing is, that upon reading this book, you will realize that he does not regard himself as such. He humbly acknowledges that he is a child of God and that he is out to put out his best efforts in this world. Ben is a gentle giant - he is a highly capable individual with the ability to save lives - and although he is a person that merits much respect, he acknowledges the value of every human as just that: a human. In other words, he considers himself an equal with someone who, for example, sells cotton candy on the beach for a living.

I rated the books five stars because it is so inspirational. Through his well told story- that of a economically handicapped youth in a segregated society who becomes one of the world's best neurosurgeons - he shows us that there are no excuses in life. We all have obstacles - some small, some mammoth - but we can all pull strength from ourselves and God to make something great of ourselves. His faith and virtues have taken quite far in his life - and it has been accomplished by giving his best efforts each day.

Highly recommended reading for everyone - especially anyone facing hard times that make them feel like they cannot be their best - the book engagingly gives us very practical advice.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Pioneer.......2007-07-03

If you're looking for an inspirational, I-can-do-it-too book for high school students, this is the one. Having gone from ghetto child to pediatric neurologist, Carson not only recounts his own journey but offers advice to young people as well as their parents. The life and death stories are page turners.

5 out of 5 stars Gifted Hands/Think Big Dr. Ben Carson.......2007-06-15

Dr. Carson not only has Gifted Hands, he has a great deal of Faith. My husband is a former patient of Dr. Carson and absolutely adores him. What a special person with a very special gift. You will love his books they are well written and inspirational. Great job Ben Carson!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book........2007-04-20

My professors are amazing. They know what they are talking about, and I learn so much from them, not only from their books but their classes too! This book is an amazing way to learn, whether as a college student, seminary student, or anyone wanting to learn, how to interpret and exegetically get into the Bible. They've done an excellent job at explaining without getting into "technical details" I fully recommend this book, and any other book written by these two amazing men!

5 out of 5 stars Basic Hemeneutics.......2007-04-11

THe book is ideal for a beginning study of hermeneutics. It gives well written explanations and numerous exercises with each lesson. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to improve their study skills of the bible.

4 out of 5 stars interpretive journey with Duvall and Hays.......2007-03-17

Grasping God's Word has great structure with easy-to-follow, step-by-step outlines and repetitive themes to reinforce what is being taught, such as the four steps of interpretive journey (which become five steps to dealing with the Old Testament) referred to throughout the book. Grasping the text in their town, measuring the width of the river to cross, crossing the principlizing bridge and grasping the text in our town provide readers with excellent illustrations of steps for the interpretive journey. Numerous passages of Scripture are explored using these steps in various places in the book. The authors provide numerous Bible examples of these. The reader is given a review at the end of many of the chapters to further drive home the valuable concepts being taught.

Duvall and Hays offer good examples of how different episodes in the gospels connect with each other (p. 67-8) along with interpretive principles to determine what the smaller stories tell us about Jesus and what the authors of the individual gospels are saying by the way the shorter stories are put together (p. 239). Contrasting characters in the biblical text is another literary device that Duvall and Hays encourage readers to look for as they study the gospels. They illustrate this concept well with numerous biblical characters. Duvall and Hays give readers insight into how to make observations and pick up clues dropped by the writer of the biblical narrative (p. 302).

Duvall and Hays make the point that biblical interpretation needs to be approached within the framework of the Historical-Cultural context, because this is how God gave the Bible (p. 96). This is logical because if interpretation of a passage does not make sense in the context of the time of the writing, it is a misinterpretation.

Unfortunately, the authors' understanding of the Old Covenant is flawed. One of the ways this manifests itself is in their writing about the Old Covenant. Duvall and Hays believe the Old Testament saints main focus was the Law, whereas New Testament saints are saved by grace (p. 366). Scripture teaches, though, that God's people under the Old Covenant were saved by grace through faith (Gen. 15.6; Ex. 14.31; Jonah 3.5; Hab. 2.4), just like those under the New Covenant (Eph. 2.8).

Duvall and Hays have a flawed understanding of certain aspects of the New Covenant as well. They caution readers not to be Judaizers in the application of the Old Testament prophets. They believe that the message of judgment does not apply to Christians because they are under the New Covenant. They believe that when a Christian is unfaithful it hurts God emotionally, and it damages the relationship with Him, though judgment is only for unbelievers (p. 366). But according to the New Testament, judgment begins with believers (1 Peter 4.17), and God will chastise His people living in sin (1 Cor. 5.5, 11.29-31; Heb. 12.3-11).

Even though readers may disagree with Duvall & Hays' theological prospectives, particularly pertaining to the Old Covenant, Grasping God's Word is well written and provides a useful tool for interpreting Scripture. Readers might desire more information about certain topics but, for the most part, Grasping God's Word is quite extensive.

5 out of 5 stars The Proper Tool for the Job.......2007-03-07

I purchased this as a textbook for a seminary course I am taking. That being said, if I had known what a wonderful tool this would be in learning how to dig deeper into God's word, I would have bought it for personal enrichment alone. The authors do an admirable job of breaking down the elements of Hermeneutics in a way that can be understood and applied by anyone. Each chapter has multiple examples of how to apply the principle being taught and the practice exercises at the end of each chapter are enlightening and instructive. This tool works just like any other, the more often you pick it up, the deeper you can dig. If your goal is to wring out all the spiritual nourishment you can from the Bible, This is the proper tool for the job. As a side benefit, it also sharpens your critical reading skills as applied to other source material. By the way, this is now a permanent part of my library. I couldn't resell it if I wanted to due to the extensive highlighting on every page!

5 out of 5 stars hands of fury.......2007-06-10

Like other Hogarth works, the hand is represented as stylized, over muscled, and predominantly masculine. If you expect that from the beginning, then you will find no disappointment in this book. I loved this book, as the stylization helps with understanding the shape and movements, the anatomical structure of the hand. It gives you an idea of how to draw proportions, angles, forshortening, etc. without the use of a model. As I prefer to draw from memory, this book was just my style.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing Dynamic Hands .......2007-01-19

Dynamic Hands is the ideal book to learn how to draw hands and understand the structure of the hand and how it works in all positions. Well drawn hands and feet are extremely important for finished paintings and illustrations. I am a commercial artist and designer, but have worked for many years on non-figurative projects. I am focusing on figurative work again, primarily in the game, fantasy and science fiction field. My goal is to draw entirely from imagination without having to use reference material, and this book by Burne Hogarth and his Dynamic Anatomy is helping me to reach this goal. The illustrations are very well done with several important hand positions and range of motion diagrams. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant Work!!.......2007-01-15

This book is very detailed and gives a wonderful view of the human hand. There is help for different ages and different ranges of art experience. Would recommend this book to anyone wanting help drawing the human hands!

Good book, when trying the hard art of drawing a human hand.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top 3 Burne Hogarth books.......2006-05-07

...Right along with his famous, incredibly excellent Dynamic Figure Drawing, and the *original* version Dynamic Anatomy.

While this is certainly an attractive, *amazingly* detailed effort, I personally find The Book of a Hundred Hands by George Bridgman to be an easier & more effective work in its entirety. Both books deal with drawing from memory- drawing hands completely without a model.
Here's a brief overview of Drawing Dynamic Hands, including common praises(+) & criticisms(_):
+ ...amazingly detailed- in pictures & anatomy.
+ ...*crystal clear*, small-to-large sized, black & white drawings.
+ ...best-ever coverage of proportions & measurements.
+ ...the most comprehensive book on this subject to date.
+ ...helps a person discover many hidden aspects of hand construction.
+ ...covers all main actions, angles & views involving foreshortening.
+ ...males, females, kids, occupations & the aging process are depicted and described.

_ ...maybe *too much information*, too overwhelming & not all of it necessary.
_ ...hands often look too overly detailed, exaggerated & stylized. Maybe best for illustrators- not fine artists.
_ ...barely any coverage of female hands (just a few pictures).
_ ...*might* inadvertently make drawing hands more complicated than it needs to be.

Commercial & comicbook artists in particular *love* this book- It's not necessary for everyone though- definitely worth considering!

Book Description

In many ways, the church today has more consumers than committed participants. We see church merely as an event we attend or an organization we belong to, rather than as a calling that shapes our entire life.

Many of us would be relieved if God had place dour sanctification in the hands of trained professionals, but that simply is not the biblical model. God's plan is that through the faithful ministry of every part, the whole body will grow to maturity in Christ.

Tripp explains how his work follows an "all of my people, all of the time" model. If you followed the Lord for a thousand years, you would still need the ministry of the body of Christ as much as you did the day you first believed. This need will remain until our sanctification is complete in Glory.

This is a comprehensive treatment of how God uses people as tools of change in the lives of others, people who themselves are in need of change.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great read for all Christians, especially those in ministry.......2007-09-17

I was only about ten pages into this book before I realized that it was very, very good. And it kept getting better. It is not only theologically sound in the sense of not containing noticeable errors, but also deals with its subject matter in a theologically astute way. And in addition to being theologically sound, it is pastoral and practical. I have no doubt that I will return to it again and again in pastoral ministry.

The main idea of the book is that all believers should be doing what Tripp calls "personal ministry," helping people to see themselves and their situations in a biblical light, and work to be conformed more to the image of Christ. Most of his stories and application have to do with pastoral ministry or professional Christian counseling, but the principles could apply just as well to a small group leader, or any Christian who wishes to be used by God to minister to others. In examining our lives, we (and the people we counsel) need to understand the fundamental teachings of the Bible on God and humanity. We have to understand that we are fallen, that sin has pervaded every aspect of our lives. As a result we sin, we suffer from the effects of others' sin, and we respond sinfully to that suffering. Sin is not an occasional mix-up in an otherwise well-functioning system; it is a constant reality that is at play in every situation we deal with. We must also understand, though, that as believers we have been fundamentally changed by the gospel. We have been clothed in the righteousness of Christ, and we have been filled with the Holy Spirit, so that we really are able to fight against the power of sin ad walk in increasing obedience to God's commands. In short, all of us are "people in need of change," God gives us the means by which to change, and we are called to help each other change.

This book is a great introduction to personal ministry, especially for a pastor. The examples were a little dramatic, and it could be discouraging for someone who isn't dealing with marriages that are falling apart or people who were abused as children. But Tripp's principles are a great paradigm for any Christian who desires to minister to others and build deeper relationships within the body of Christ.

5 out of 5 stars so helpful.......2007-05-12

This is a great book. It is helpful for counselors, but also very practical for self-help. It is eye opening to say the least--helps to get to the heart of problems.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for all church members.......2007-03-19

Tripp's book is a refreshingly biblical perspective on how believers are called to minister to one another. It reminds us that helping others work through their problems is something that we are all to do and that most problems can be tackled by serious minded believers using God's Word and relying on the Holy Spirit. Tripp helps us put our problems in the bigger picture of our relationship with God and to work towards lasting change. This book is very readable, has many helpful illustrations and is thoroughly biblical. It is worth reading over and over!

4 out of 5 stars Good condition - recieved on time........2007-02-09

Book was received in good condition and received in a timely manner.

5 out of 5 stars Law/Gospel Counseling.......2007-02-05

The problem is sin, the cure Jesus Christ. Deliver this message lovingly and gently. Any questions?

Astonishingly, Paul Tripp reminds ministers of the gospel that they are in fact ministers of the gospel, not psychologists. Amazing.

Great book. We don't need to get beyond Christ, we need MORE OF Christ.

"I didn't choose to study breast cancer--it chose me," writes Jane A. Plant, Ph.D., chief scientist of the British Geological Survey. Plant knows firsthand the terrifying experience of battling breast cancer that grew progressively worse five times and spread to her lymph system. She also knows the exhilaration and empowerment of defeating it.

Your Life Is in Your Hands is a detailed account of both Plant's personal story and her tenacious hunt for controllable risk factors for breast cancer. Her conclusion: dairy-product consumption is a risk factor for breast cancer (and perhaps prostate cancer), as smoking is for lung cancer. "Cow's milk is a perfect food for a rapidly growing baby calf," she writes, but "cow's milk isn't intended by nature for consumption by any species other than baby cows." Plant presents a lifestyle program to reduce your risk of cancer, including dietary, stress-reduction, and environmental suggestions.

Plant aims Your Life Is in Your Hands at a wide audience: women who want to avoid breast cancer, women with active cancer, and health professionals who want to help patients with the assistance of Plant's interpretation of a body of scientific evidence. Despite the amount of detail, Plant writes clearly, even informally, for the layperson. (She refers to her prosthesis as her "false boob.") If you feel you have to skim over the long explanations of her medical treatments, for example, you find a list of tips at the end.

Plant's ideas are controversial, but her scientific reputation is indisputable. She was awarded the Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran Prize, Britain's most prestigious science honor, in 1999. --Joan Price

Book Description

One out of nine women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In fact, it is the second leading cause of cancer death for women (after lung cancer) and the leading overall cause of death in women between the ages of forty and fifty-five. For too long women have erroneously believed that there is little or nothing they can do to prevent this dread illness. Our major medical efforts are directed toward detecting and treating, rather than preventing, breast cancer.Professor Jane Plant, one of Britain's most eminent scientists, contracted breast cancer in 1987. She had five recurrences, and, by 1993, the cancer had spread to her lymph system. When orthodox medicine gave up and she was told that she only had three months to live, she determined to use her extensive scientific training and her knowledge of other cultures to find a way to survive. In her research, she was startled to find that in China breast cancer affects far fewer women than in Western countries. Plant considered that there could be a dietary trigger for the illness. As she continued her scientific investigations, she became convinced that there was a causal link between consumption of dairy products and breast cancer.Jane Plant finally defeated her breast cancer, in part because she used her training and knowledge as a natural scientist to understand it-- and then overcome it. Combining the diet her research had led to with traditional medical treatment, Professor Plant was not only able to triumph over her own disease but also to pass on what she had discovered to help more than sixty other women successfully fight their breast cancer. In this book, women will be presented for the first time with a compelling body of evidence strongly suggesting that consumption of dairy products may cause breast cancer. It will demonstrate the specific changes that women can make in their day-to-day lives to help prevent and treat breast cancer. With a clear statement of the scientific principles behind her discovery, Professor Plant includes detailed suggestions for ways to alter your diet by eliminating or reducing consumption of many suspected cancer-causing agents, especially dairy products, and replacing them with healthful alternatives. She offers as well detailed menus and recipes to help you make the transition and enjoy it.Your Life in Your Hands is a revolutionary book that will change the lives of millions of women.

5 out of 5 stars Trust the Plants!! .......2006-11-06

I had suspicions that dairy promoted my own breast cancer and found this book through a friend. I had stage IIB, non-metasticized, ER+, node negative. I am now working on prevention. I recommend this book to anyone with ER+ breast cancer.
I firmly believe the too-strong artificial hormones in milk aggravate & promote hormonally-responsive breast cancer.
To the contrary, in my experience phytoestrogens (the weaker but more numerous plant estrogen-like substances) are marvelous...when eaten as actual foods. I don't take supplements or eat any processed soy (ie.tofu, soymilk, isolate.) Soy for me is edamame, miso and tamari, as in Japan.
I combined the ideas in this book with traditional Chinese Medicine and am feeling better than ever before.
Phytoestrogens and plants, yes!
Also of interest to readers here may be Susun Weed's "Breast Cancer? Breast Health!" She covers the topic of phytoestrogens quite well. [..]

5 out of 5 stars A must to read and keep for all breast cancer patients .......2006-07-19

I live in Spain, and some friends from the UK sent me a cutting on the book, which I ordered. I read it while I was in treatment and it helped me no end in many ways. I have followed the diet and I am now still in complete recession almost four years after I finished my treatment for breast cancer and secondary liver metastasis. The book is excellent and well-documented, and Jane Plant makes a convincing case very well indeed. For me the book is like a bible, and I have recommended to it to numerous friends and fellow patients.

5 out of 5 stars The Economics of Beast Cancer.......2004-03-13

Jane Plant's book is ground-breaking and courageous. Every woman who's had breast cancer should read it. This is information no-one else will give you. Breast cancer is a huge industry, with expensive chemotherapy treatments that benefit only about one in ten women. Conventional medicine is limited in what it can offer breast cancer patients, and tends to camouflage the picture with pink ribbons, "look good, feel good" programs, and the like. I agree with the reviewer who suggested that the dairy industry doesn't want this information out there (remember the Mad Cow scare and the beef industry?)Women in Holland (high dairy intake) and farmers' wives have a higher incidence of breast cancer. Breast cancer patients need to help themselves in any way they can. I have read many alternative-therapy books but this one is tops, and is a must-read not only for women but also for men who wish to avoid prostate cancer, which is now one in eight, same as breast cancer. By the way, I'm an MD and a breast cancer patient.

5 out of 5 stars Nutrition and Cancer.......2002-08-08

This book by Jane Plant, a British geologist, deals with a very difficult and emotional subject for women, breast cancer. It also has the potential to raise the eyebrows of anyone with a scientific background. There are numerous traps that Jane Plant could have fallen into, however, she avoids all potential disasters and winds up with a very scientific treatise on the subject of nutrition and cancer (breast and prostate). The book is mostly about her fight against breast cancer and the revelation that Oriental women have a very low rate of breast cancer. From this morsel Jane deduces that there may be a significant dietary component to the cause of the disease. Working from there she goes on to discuss a number of scientific studies that involve the growth factors that are contained in dairy products. Jane uses logic and scientific fact to come to the conclusion that dairy products are the single most important factor causing breast cancer in western women. She concludes by offering an alternative diet for women who wish to lower their chances of contracting the disease. This book is a must read for any breast cancer activist and any health care professional who treats breast cancer in women. It is surprising that the book has not gotten more publicity and attention. I suspect the American dairy industry may have had something to do with that.

2 out of 5 stars Knowledge IS Power.......2002-05-14

Dr. Plant's book is very interesting, and in many ways I agree with her: breast cancer has suffered greatly from lack of scientific knowledge: medicine is an art; it should not be relegated to the practicing physician alone but only as part of a team.

That said, I caution the reader to relize there are no such words as "survivor," or "in remission" when it comes to breast cancer: there are no objective, scientific analysis to prove any of the aforementioned. We lull women into passivity with 'positive,' sound bites, that are great for fund raising but do little for outcomes. The key is in the screening and diagnostic phase: once there is treatment question, diagnostic phase was flawed.

"Only in silence may breast cancer continue (C.J.H. Thompson 1998)." Never pay anyone you have not met and has spent time with you.
