Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

This volume, which follows the pattern of the highly successful Navarre Bible New Testament, consists of the Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate with a Commentary by members of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Navarre, Spain.

One of the most striking aspects of both these books is the use of poetry. Although poetic language is to be found in many Old Testament books, it is the predominant form in these ones. The book of Psalms and the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) contain lyric poetry, whereas the other books consist mainly of proverbs or aphorisms in verse form, and wisdom poems in varying lengths. This is primarily why the Psalms and the Song are described as poetical books, and the others as wisdom books.

This volume also contains notes, introductions, and Latin. The editors' notes, which are rarely very technical, are designed to elucidate the spiritual and theological message of the Bible.

All of the Navarre commentaries are superb, including this one. The volumes comprise an invaluable resource for both scholars and religious seekers alike. I can't recommend them enough.

5 out of 5 stars And Still Yet Another. . ........2005-04-14

. . . contribution to an outstanding series! This series provides a desperately needed resource for the serious Catholic Scripture student.

Now that the Navarre Bible New Testament project has been completed, the editors have turned their attention to the Old Testament. This volume "Wisdom Books" is the Fifth result of that effort, following up on the well-received "Psalms and Song of Solomon".

Included in this volume is commentary on several books accepted by Catholic and Orthodox Christians, but rejected by most Protestants. This edition provides a solid background to these books and fills a necessary niche.

The primary text is the Catholic version of the widely regarded "Revised Standard Version". Included as well is the New Latin Vulgate. Sandwiched between is excellent expository verse-by-verse commentary on the Scripture text. The commentary is taken from a conservative, tradition, yet scholarly Catholic perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent exposition of the Psalter!!!.......2007-09-07

Volume 1 of John Goldingay's trilogy on the Psalter is a tour de force, combining detailed exegesis with theological reflection. It begins with a fairly lengthy, but informative introduction that addresses authorship, formation of the Psalter, and the various types of Psalms. His exegesis of Psalms 1-41 is currently the most thorough available. His frequent discussions of Old Testament theology and the use of the Psalter in the New Testament make this volume a superb resource for both sound exegesis and preaching. It will most definitely prove to be an illuminating read for anyone interested in studying, understanding and expounding the Psalter. Ignore the NIVAC and WBC volumes on the Psalter and simply buy this volume and its 2 forthcoming installments. Goldingay's exegesis is simply much more thorough and informative. The forthcoming (single) volume on the Psalms for NICOT will most likely not be able to hold a candle to Goldingay's trilogy. Highly recommended!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Reverant, Insightful and Pastoral.......2007-01-28

Thank you Dr. Goldingay for a truly helpful commentary on the Psalms. This commentary is aimed at pastors and seminary students, (Scholars will not be disappointed either). Goldingay provides a careful and fresh translation of each Psalm, a 65 page introduction and Christological interpretation to the Psalms. Each psalm is given an introduction, and notes of translation. Dr. Goldingay follows up with verse by verse comment and finally, a closing on the theological implecations. He interacts with scholarship of all eras, favorites such as Jerome and Luther, and includes many of our day as well ( Klaus Baltzer, Linda M. Maloney, Eugene H. Peterson and Walter Brueggemann; etc.) Currently, I have 6 commentaries on the Psalms, including Davidson, Terrien, Craigie and Mays, yet this surges to the top because of its ability to "stick" in my mind. Dr. Goldingay's pen is clear, reverant, concise and insightful.

      Book Description

From the author of the best-selling When Bad Things Happen to Good People and Living a Life That Matters–a new book of practical spirituality, of inspiration and encouragement gleaned from what may be the best-known and best-loved chapter in the Bible: the Twenty-third Psalm.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” So begins the psalm that, for millennia, has been a source of comfort in grief and of courage in fear. Now Harold Kushner discovers what it has to teach us about living our day-to-day lives. Each chapter discusses one line of the psalm in the context of both the time when it was written and the present day, and illuminates the life lessons contained within it. For example, Kushner shows us that the phrase “My cup runneth over” is a declaration of our gratitude for what life has given us and a rejection of the envy we may feel for what others have. And he draws on the ideas and thoughts of various spiritual figures–from G. K. Chesterton to Martin Buber to Paul Tillich–to further expand our understanding of this great psalm and help us benefit from its everyday spiritual wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Find Uplifting, Modern Meaning In An Old Favorite.......2007-08-14

This book takes a very difficult topic and gives it an encouraging side. Even though life can be tough, even wrenching, sometimes (Kushner's analysis applies well beyond the topic of death that we associate with this psalm), finding the comfort in Psalm 23 means not being alone in your plight. The author puts a much greater understanding around some very abstract language that allowed me to get much more than just reading the words and taking them at face value only. This is a must-read for many of us.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!.......2007-05-14

This book gives so much depth and daily application to a prayer that almost everyone has heard at one time or another. I used to think this was the prayer for funerals and death but it is very much for the living every day. Rabbi Kushner is a phenomenal author that I find incredibly easy to read and so meaningful.

This is a beautiful and thought-provoking work by Harold Kushner. I've recommended it to many people and have given it as gifts to others. Well worth the money and something you will probably want to read more than once. The book on cd is great also.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent way to understand this psalm.......2006-01-21

If you believe in God from a Christian or Jew perspective, you can be enlightened and delighted with this thorough explanation of the psalm and benefit from taking the posture the psalmist(s) had when writing it. I have listened to this psalm throughout my whole life and never had the opportunity to fully see all that may be found in its deep meaning. It is amazing all can be expanded from these simple phrases.
I usually love Harold Kushner's way of explaining spiritual material (Must read: "When Bad Things Happen to Good People", "Living a Life that Matters" and "How Good do We Have to Be") because, although his main point of view is a religious one, even if you don't believe or don't even want to think about these points of view, you can still get the full message, get a wise vision of life, adversity, the laws of nature, reality, joy, ethics, reaching for self fulfillment and integrity, etc. But, I must repeat, in order to enjoy and benefit from this book, I think you must believe in God because this one is much more religious than the other books I mentioned from the same author. If you want to understand what may be in the depths of the psalm and don't really care about feeling peace or living according to it, go ahead and read the book because it gives an interesting way of understanding what religion may provide or wants to give.

        Book Description

We think of law as rules whose words are binding, used by the courts in the adjudication of disputes. Bernard S. Jackson explains that early biblical law was significantly different, and that many of the laws in the Covenant Code in Exodus should be viewed as `wisdom-laws'. By this term, he means `self-executing' rules, the provisions of which permit their application without recourse to the law-courts or similar institutions. They thus conform to two tenets of the `wisdom tradition': that judicial dispute should be avoided, and that the law is a type of teaching, or `wisdom'.

        Book Description

As ardent debates over creationism fill the front pages of newspapers, Genesis has never been more timely. And as Leon R. Kass shows in The Beginning of Wisdom, it’s also timeless.

Examining Genesis in a philosophical light, Kass presents it not as a story of what happened long ago, but as the enduring story of humanity itself. He asserts that the first half of Genesis contains insights about human nature that “rival anything produced by the great philosophers.” Kass here reads these first stories—from Adam and Eve to the tower of Babel—as a mirror for self-discovery that reveals truths about human reason, speech, freedom, sexual desire, pride, shame, anger, and death. Taking a step further in the second half of his book, Kass explores the struggles in Genesis to launch a new way of life that addresses mankind’s morally ambiguous nature by promoting righteousness and holiness.

Even readers who don’t agree with Kass’s interpretations will find The Beginning of Wisdom a compelling book—a masterful philosophical take on one of the world’s seminal religious texts.

“Extraordinary. . . . Its analyses and hypotheses will leave no reader’s understanding of Genesis unchanged.” —New York Times

“A learned and fluent, delightfully overstuffed stroll through the Gates of Eden. . . . Mix Harold Bloom with Stephen Jay Gould and you’ll get something like Kass. A wonderfully intelligent reading of Genesis.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Throughout his book, Kass uses fruitful, fascinating techniques for getting at the heart of Genesis. . . . Innumerable times [he] makes a reader sit back and rethink what has previously been tediously familiar or baffling.”—Washington Post

“It is important to state that this is a book not merely rich, but prodigiously rich with insight. Kass is a marvelous reader, sensitive and careful. His interpretations surprise again and again with their cogency and poignancy.”—Jerusalem Post

5 out of 5 stars Enhancing the sense of our own human dignity and value .......2007-10-10

In his instructive introduction to this work Kass surveys some of the ways in which the Bible is now read. He talks about the philological and linguistic critics who search to find historicize the work through noting its variant readings. He speaks of the literary approaches which aim to reveal its stylistic and artistic power. He speaks of the various Post- Modern approaches, and the politically correct ones which seek to indict the Bible for Marxist, feminist, ecological reasons. He speaks of the literal fundamenlist religious readings which force the Bible into straightjacket closed worlds of meaning.
As opposed to this he offers a philosophical and moral approach, one in which the Bible is read, and in this case specifically 'Genesis' for its understanding of the eternal verities of the human situation. As he notes the ancient Greeks came to seek understanding of the world from 'wonder' at things as they are, and as they are not. The ancient Hebrew of the Bible were instead moved by awe and reverence of God and their search for wisdom which could guide them to living righteous lives.
What Kass does in this book is take these foundation- stories of the Biblical tradition, stories of Adam and Eve in the Garden, of Cain and Abel, of the Biblical patriarchs and matriarchs, of Joseph and his brothers and read them not in a simplistic one-dimensional way but rather in a complicated questioning and sophisticated way. The Wisdom to be gotten here from this book is not that which is directly and simply imposed and commanded, but rather which comes out of inquiry and dialogue out of a non- dogmatic search for understanding.
Thus this work invites the reader not to be a rubber- stamp but to be a thinker- along- with it. It is written with great respect for the reader and the wisdom which comes out of respect of the reader's intelligence, rationality and freedom.
Reading the book will do , I believe for most readers, what all of Leon Kass's writing does for me , enhance our sense of our human dignity and value.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Wisdom Seeker.......2007-07-01

The Beginning of Wisdom is a wondrous product resulting from many years of teaching and reflection on the book of Genesis by biochemist and ethicist, Leon Kass. This book makes Genesis accessible for those who perhaps depend too greatly on rationalization and struggle with faith. Rather than using theological or literary approaches, Kass extracts meaning from the Bible with a philosophical and wisdom seeking spirit. The resulting work is an enjoyable feast of a multitude of insights about human nature, marriage, families, politics, etc.

`The Beginning of Wisdom' is broken into two parts. The first part is more abstract and metaphorical since it focuses on stories from the Garden of Eden to the Tower of Babel. The tone of the second part, which focuses on Abraham and his descendents, is more explanatory and reads like play-by-play commentary.

When it comes to Biblical exegesis a reader should always be skeptical of one persons interpretation especially if they're unfamiliar with their work. Fortunately I found Kass' conclusions well reasoned, albeit a little verbose. With some editing the book could've been cut down to 500 or even 400 pages but Kass' detailed analysis and conversational tone compels the reader to commit through his 700pg text. Rarely does Kass make wild extrapolations never deviating from what is explicitly stated in the Bible. If he does, he admits as he did when he tried to draw connections between the creation story and Darwinism, but what would you expect from a biochemist?

On a side note, one of the downsides of the growing secularization of society is that many discard the Bible as a sexist relic of ancient superstition. As Kass reinforces with his book, nothing can be further from the truth. Even for the atheist with an open mind, the Bible can serve as tremendously rich source of wisdom that can teach us about who we are as self-conscious creatures struggling to make sense out of our existence.

        This book is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and well written.......2006-07-30

As the author points out, most books on the Bible come from either of two points of view: 1) historical, how did the book come about? or 2) from a particular religious tradition.

The problem with the historical approach is that it tends to debunk the contents and rarely offers much insight into the contents.

The problem with the latter is that, although a religious tradition can enrich our understanding of the text, it can narrow our vision. The text comes to serve the agenda of the particular tradition.

Neither approach treats this extraordinarily rich text with the respect that it deserves. Kass offers a philosophical, deep reading of Genesis that is engrossing and very readable.

This is one of the most interesting books that I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars provides a richer understanding of the nature of the Hebrew Bible.......2006-07-11

This wonderful book makes the study of Genesis relevant to seekers of wisdom on many levels. The author states that he wrote this book for skeptics and the children of skeptics. This means that one can approach this book without necessarily being "religious" and still find much that is meaningful and relevant to contemporary lives lived. Most significantly Kass eliminates the need for many to deny the validity of the Torah on the basis of its historicity. After reading the Creation narrative only , one can easily understand why the book's historical reality should not stand in the way of its value. Kass' book is a commentary on the Book of Genesis, which has been around for 1000's of years and has provided wisdom, insight , comfort and an understanding of the human condition to countless readers. While Kass's interpretation is not be the only valid approach , it is an example of how the "slow reading" of the text by a sensitive and discerning reader can transform what seems to be an ahistorical and seemingly unscientific document into an astute observation on the nature and psyche of humanity and the existential challenges that we face. The author seeks to demonstrate how the Biblical text provides us with prescriptions for overcoming the hubris that affects so many of us. I have used this text as a teaching tool in my Grade 12 Torah class and in Adult Education and can report that it has contributed to thought provoking discussions and stimulated a fair amount of introspection by the audience. For the right reader , this book can contribute to a life altering experience , offering a vision of life not grounded the morass of postmodernistic nihilism.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent discourse on Genesis.......2005-09-20

Genesis is one of my very favorite books in the Bible, and Kass's coverage has given me new insight into this wonderful book. I have just preached a series on the Patriarchs and used this book extensively. It's really good and full of new ideas. I highly recommend it.
