4 out of 5 stars Behind the Wheel Spanish.......2007-09-30

This is a detailed product that has made it easier for me to learn Spanish than what I have experienced through either formal classes or other products. I would recommend it to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Powerful.......2007-07-15

This course is a powerhouse course for learning spanish. So much useful vocabulary and conversational skills are covered in this course it is mind blowing. Mark's strategy is to use variable repetition to build a solid base on which to learn spanish and that magic is working on me. Mark has a solid sense of which words, phrases, sentence structures etc. are most used by english and spanish speaking folks alike, and he pounds them home till they become second nature.
It's all here, not just sentence building, but how to say the time, the days of the week, count into the millions, talk about the weather and a million other daily kinds of stuff humans around the world talk about or use in thier language on a daily basis.
Mark has made an excellent tool for learning Spanish available, it is now up me, the learner, to decide how far and how fast I want to utilize it.
In such a short while I am speaking in rudimentary ways to my Spanish friends, and they are stunned at my progress knowing that -truly- the extent of my Spanish was "adios" before beginning this course.
I hope that helps some of you decide.
all the best

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2007-07-09

I am engaged to a Spanish man, who's entire family speaks Spanish most of the time. Using this program has really helped me get started on learning the language. Now when I am at family gatherings, I find myself understanding the gist of the conversations going on. I haven't finished the program yet, but I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn Spanish and has a long commute to work or spends a lot of time on the road.

I bought this book along with another of Melody's. I think she is a very caring and understanding person and this book gives me daily readings to keep up my spirits and know that I am not alone and I can fix my own problems. I wasn't expecting a daily devotional type of book, but I am so glad now that I have it. They say one day at a time.. and right now that's what I'm giving.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplement.......2007-05-16

The most important thing to remember when purchasing this pack is that these CDs are for beginners, NOT novice speakers. People who have had some training with Chinese in the classroom or self-study may be able to pick up and use this CD pack, but the information is presented too rapidly (and there is too much presented at once) to be good for initial acquisition.

I would give it 5 stars, but there is no clear advertising about this product. If I had some information about the rapid pace and the target audience, I probably would not have purchased this set. It will, however, be a useful set once I've mastered some basic phrases.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! CD 1 and Beyond.......2006-06-16

The 'good' doesn't stop with CD1. It's just beginning.
I notice no difference between the approach used in 'Behind the Wheel Chinese/Mandarin' and other Behind the Wheel courses I have used.
CD 2 and beyond evolve sentence building, tenses, expressions,
and tons of vocabulary that they teach you how to assemble.
Great course.

4 out of 5 stars Good for listening comprehension and practice.......2006-05-06

This audio set is very useful for getting an idea of how things are pronounced natively, and some slight variations on those pronunciations. However, it would not be a good idea to start here, as it relies heavily on memory. However, a good accompanying set to any books and courses.

Meant to be listened to, not to replace study while not driving.

3 out of 5 stars Great vocabulary but very disorganized.......2006-04-02

I recently bought the BHTW Chinese and honestly, I was disappointed. Let me say that I am a translator/intrepreter for some Western languages, teach languages, including at an Ivy League university - so language-learning is an important part of my life.
Before I start with the specific comments, I just want to say a few words about all-audio courses in general. They are NOT for everyone. People learn in different ways and to learn a language, you generally have to inundate yourself in all ways, through visual AND audio stimuli. If you are very busy and spend a lot of time commuting, this obviously has value but I question how much you are actually retaining and more importantly able to reproduce in a different situation when you just listen. It can take longer when just having the audio stimulus. [...] they say right on the cover it can also be for home use, say on the computer while you are working, laying in bed etc. When I teach my language classes, I tell the students the audio materials are very important but ALWAYS review the text first before just listening. If this is such a nutty idea, why does Language Dimensions offer a script for some of its Spanish courses? Obviously, some people would like this.

The good points: This is the opposite of Pimsleur were they just take 4-5 dialogues and repeat everything a million times, exposing you to very little vocabulary and very few situations. Here you get lots of good vocabulary. Also, they start out CD 1 just the right way, you start building simple sentences - you learn I, you - then some verbs work, eat etc. Then you make sentences "I want to eat", "I have to go" etc. Very good.

The bad points: 1) After CD 1, any real efforts to build sentences in a systematic way stop. Yes, there are some attempts to have structure - changing to different pronouns, negative verbs etc. but these instances often have no rhyme or reason. We often get lists and lists of expressions, with only the occasional question by the English native, "How do you say that?", "Wonderful", "Let's have some fun.." He will ask for the pronunciation of some word he finds interesting but ignore structures etc. which are much more complicated
2) Generally, the focus of the course is focusing on the ENGLISH and translating it to Chinese. Thus, you will get a whole series of things in English that sound alike, "I'm going to".... etc. but in Chinese the structures can be very different, "Wo qu...", other times "Wo dasuan" (I'm planning to), I give to/he gives to, sometimes "wei ta" sometimes "gei ta" - yet no explanation is ever given on why these things are different. You have the male and female speaker translating "I'm afraid" in 2 different ways, no explanation. This becomes a HUGE problem if you want to suddenly apply the Chinese vocabulary. One English sentence can be translated many ways, and it is, and no explanation is given why. It would be better to have a bit less vocabular and a but more instruction on how to use structure. This happens sometimes in the series but there is no rhyme or reason.
3) Not only do they make it oriented to the English words instead of the Chinese words, I am 99% sure that they used their original Spanish course as a basis and just translated everything into Chinese, based on the grammar objectives of the Spanish course. For example, there is a whole section on "indirect object pronouns" - an important issue in Spanish but in Chinese, the output can be very different, involving different ways for saying "to" - wei/gei, different verbs etc. Another section has "time and weather" - Why would they keep putting this together in one phrase in Chinese, I wondered. But in Spanish, the same word, tiempo does double duty. So in Chinese we get "tianqi haishi shijian" or "tianqi huo shijian" (neglecting to mention the important difference between "haishi" and "huo". When you look at it from this perspective, you see how the objectives for translating into Spanish work, but they don't for Chinese. For example, a lot of time is spent negating present tense verbs. In Chinese, for most present tense situations, you just use "bu" in front of the verb, that's it. But so much time is spent on this. Or changing from person to person - the speaker keeps stressing he wants this "formal" - well, if you are talking about tu/usted in Spanish, this is an issue. In Chinese, it's just ni versus nin, the verb form itself never changes for person. Sometimes, they are even sloppy enough to say formal and the Chinese speaker still uses "ni" instead of "nin"!
At another point, the speaker tries to make the Chinese shi/zai constructions into something like Spanish ser/estar. There are similarities but the attempts of the English native to do this is not productive and misleading.
So much time is wasted on this stuff while other stuff, like say particles zhe, guo etc. are ignored. Word order issues in Chinese are ignored. The point is, if you try to reproduce these structures on your own, you will have a lot of problems unless you do it exactly as was said.
4) Part of the problems lies in the fact that, while there is a ton of useful vocabulary, there are many, many things which you are unlikely to say - "Every child is a gift from God", "I never ate there, not even once" - things that are nice to know but it is at the expense of reinforcing sentences that are more standard. Vocab is not reviewed in a consistent way. They will throw in a word like "cai", guess, but never really do anything with it. The stories are just heaped on without any real hope of actively reproducing the vocab - like so-and-so "speaks with a thick accent" - just thrown in. I'd say they do nothing with 50% of the vocab or mention something only once.
5) Fully devoid of any cultural context outside of the language commentary. They mentioned chop sticks once. Beyond that, this could be the Arabic course or French course. No mention of famous sites in China. In their numerous examples, they never ONCE have a Chinese name! Always Bob, Maria etc., never Miss Li or Mr. Wang. So the course is oriented to the English key words and seems also to be based on the original Spanish AND it lacks any real cultural context for China.
6) The English-speaker. His role in this is very strange. As stated above, he will often go for pages reading phrases. Then through in a "wonderful". He will ask about an occasional word or pronunciation but it is worse when he makes his observations about grammar. Many things are just wrong or absurd. He asks the speaker if there is a way to say "I give to him" (Um, what language in the world doesn't have a way to say that?). At one point, he starts referring to the PAST TENSE in Chinese with LE. This is deceptive and incorrect. LE can happen in the present tense too, Wo bing le - but they translate this as "I'm sick", no explanation. At one point, he wants to review the subject pronouns, after 15 minutes of sentences using the subject pronouns. In CD 7, he is surprised to learn that there are no specific object pronouns in Chinese - they are the same as the subject ones - um, wouldn't it be a good idea to talk about that in CD 1? At another point, he says, "Chinese does not distinguish plural" um no, that is not accurate either. There are many cases when you can use "penyoumen" (friends) etc. No one says the person has to be a walking linguistics professor but what he says should be accurate. And, as I said above, he says many structures which sound alike in English but product different structures in Chinese, so this does not help you to reproduce the structures.
7) Attempts are made to address certain subjects, clothes, ordering food etc. Yet there is often no real attempt to speak about a certain topic. You'll get 5-6 sentences on a restaurant and then something completely different. It would be better if they could have more of a topic focus.

In summary: Yes, it has value. If you can learn the many phrases, you can say some very intesting things in Chinese. The problem arises, however, if you try to USE the structures beyond CD 1. You are given very little guidance for a whole mass of vocabulary, English structures that translate into many Chinese structures, vocabulary that many not be suitable for everyday situations. Buy it for the car, but something else for more comprehensive study at home.

5 out of 5 stars Great Course - Multi-Track - 2 Native Speakers.......2006-03-24

I tried Pimsleur's Chinese (Mandarin) (Instant Conversation) and returned it because it didn't have multi-tracks, they presented too little vocabulary and the the course was 'rigid'.
I prefer the method in Behind the Wheel Chinese because there are multi-tracks
(very important for in-car language learning), a good memory technique and great original sentence formation exercises that get you speaking Mandarin from the get-go.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for a Study Guide.......2007-10-09

Some of the reviews for this book are far too harsh. I do agree that the first version of the book had numerous errors, but the second version corrected most of them. I used this book as my primary study guide for the 70-536 exam and I passed the exam easily. I considered using an alternative practice exam solution, but the software that came with the book was adequate, and in some instances, more difficult than the actual exam.

With that being said, I too agree that this book alone will (most likely) not enable you to pass the exam. This book is a *study guide*, not a *cheat sheet*. The goal of the book is to introduce you to exam topics and prepare you to solve exam problems using the .NET Framework App Foundation. This book is intended for candidates that have experience with previous or current versions of the Framework, who wish to condition that knowledge to pass an exam. The authors inform you of what level of skills you should have at the beginning of every chapter.

As with any technical book, it can use a little work. Chapter 9 'Installing Applications' should be considered for revision to flow better for the reader. But even with it's choppy flow, the information in chapter 9 is quite useful.

In summary; I read it, I passed, I'd recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars gr8.......2007-09-28

It's a gr8 product, the only setback was that Microsoft has just one book for VB as well as C# coders, so half of the book is useless for me

2 out of 5 stars Context Challenged.......2007-09-20

I am a Java programmer with no background in .Net, so I thought I would try to get certified as a way to learn the subject matter in a comprehensive manner. This book is not a good introduction to creating applications for Windows for a couple of reasons. First, much of the information in this book is badly out of context. For example, the first lab in Chapter 9 gives complete, detailed instructions on how to create a project in Microsoft Visual Studio. This lab would have been more useful as the first lab in the first chapter (obviously). In addition, many security related items are brought up in early chapters, but discussion of them is deferred to Chapter 11. Second, the book assumes familiarity with Windows concepts or products without explanation (which, in a "Foundation" book, I believe it shouldn't do). A discussion on remote components assumes a familiarity with IIS. I have finished chapters on Application Domains and Services and Installing and Configuring Applications and I still don't have a good idea of what a .dll file is, or how to actually create a componentized application.

That said, the book is not a total loss, it just requires considerable effort on the part of a novice to understand the information.

3 out of 5 stars Good enough to help me pass the test, about all.......2007-09-01

After reading this book cover to cover and taking the practice test many, many times I was able to pass the test on my first try.

What really pissed me off (along with my co-workers) is the amount of errors both in the book and the practice test. The book has so many typo's and errors the there is 2 (yea TWO) knowledge base articles for the errata. About 15% of the practice test questions (out of 300+) were just WRONG. Either the answers were not correct, or there were no correct answers.

Ok, enough of the rant. Like I said, this book did help me to pass the test, so for that I give it 3 stars. Had i failed the test it would have been more like 1 star.

Take that for what it is. Since this is the ONLY book for the test, you are kinda stuck... Just be ready for errors and frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but you need more -- This exam is not a breeze so please do not under estimate.......2007-08-25

First, I appeared for MCTS 70-529 (Distributed Applications) and I was able to clear in the very first attempt with 856 score -- not an easy one as it covers complex topics. Then I attempted MCTS 70-536 thinking that it is easier than 70-529. But definitely not an easy one either and I got a score of 771. It is voluminous and a beast as it covers lots of topics, right from types to code access security, collections, threading, interoperability, serialization, instrumentation, internationalization and more.

As you can imagine, a single book is not enough. You need to consult MSDN documentation heavily and frequently as most methods are overloaded with so many variations. And plus I suggest some other question bank (such as transcender, measure up, etc) in addition to the ones provided with the book. Question bank provided with book is good but not enough to cover all the tricks.

You can skip other question banks only if you are extremely .NET savvy. Which I suppose many people will not have exposure to so many topics in their careers does not matter with how many years of IT experience.

This exam is definitely not a breeze. So please prepare seriously if you intend to gain knowledge and pass this exam.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good mix of general and detail info.......2007-01-05

It's a good quality book with a good ratio of high level and very detail info. Not too many typos, almost none in the examples of SQL statements. I'd recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Good exam preperation.......2006-12-29

Very good book. Detailed chapters. Things to remember are highlighted. End of chapter questions were highlighted. For those who are experienced with SQL 2000, you will find most of this book redundant, as most of the stuff comes from SQL 2000. But it does a good job explaining new technologies i.e. Service Broker, Contract/Queue, Partitioning etc.

For those who want to sit for the 70-431 exam, i suggest getting brain dump for this exam (free) or buy a testking cram. I passed on 12/19 with 947. Yeehaa!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good kit.......2006-12-15

Since I've been working more and more with sql, I'm hoping to take Exam 70-431 early next year. This was recommended to me and it's a pretty good kit.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book -- great value.......2006-12-07

I just passed 70-431. I'm a DBA w/ experience on SQL 2005 and SQL 2000. This book and the accompanying CD were the only tools I used to study. I read the book cover to cover, although I skipped the actual practices. (I would only recommend skipping the practices if you have a lot of real world experience with the product.) Then I moved on to the practice tests on CD, and had pretty mediocre passing scores on three practice tests in certification mode (45 questions, answers scored at end). Finally, I used the practice test in study mode, where you could review your answers as you went to drill down into areas that I needed more work on. Having the accompanying practice test (295 questions) makes this kit a great value. I felt as though I learned a lot during all of this and wasn't just "studying for the test". One word on the test format itself -- there were plenty of simulations to do -- everything was not multiple choice.

3 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner that has a MCSE.... read on.......2006-11-24

I got to say that I am not enjoying this book. I am on chapter 4 and I am really finding it hard. This is not to say that I am new to computers. I have my MCSE. But this book, well I would just have done thing a bit differently. I know it is to prep one for the exam. But if you are totally new to SQL server (like me). Then you will need some more help from a friend or another book. I needed a step by step guide on installing the SQL demo database and getting things running on my computer. If they did the first chapter with this information then I would be a happy man. With this all going, I would then enjoy the learning of this great software and work with the workshops in the book. I am in this case putting this book aside and looking for a solution to some basic questions before picking it up again. For someone that has used SQL 2000, then you will find this the greatest book out their. But beginners to SQL, be aware. You will need a hand up to get your teeth into it.

4 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as Pimsleur German I.......2005-10-20

Pimsleur Language Programs products are among the best-selling audio language courses available. `Organic learning' seeks to approximate the conditions in which ordinary language-learning takes place. The process is almost entirely aural, supplemented only minimally-or at the student's discretion, not at all-by reference to reading lessons after each half-hour lesson.

Clearly, Dr. Pimsleur and his disciples-I use the word advisedly, as a glance at promotional and instructional materials will demonstrate-have done their pedagogical homework. Utilizing the spectacular power of the brain for on-the-hoof language analysis and replication, the Pimsleur Language Programs lure their listeners into meaning-rich dialogues, providing only the information required for one to respond. The closest thing to a grammatical concept that a student hears is a brief warning that `this is the form used with feminine words'. Yet with a little effort, the student intuits her way to the correct and timely use of all that grammar describes.

This is an extremely productive approach at the level of basic conversational skills that is the bread and butter of Pimsleur's products. The course writers have found just the level at which to challenge the student without counterproductive frustration. One is encouraged to achieve 80% control of a unit before moving on. Many students will accomplish this in most units on the first try. Yet the approach in these three volumes is never simplistic, reducing the urge to be somewhere else or engaged in a more advanced section to the vanishing point.

Pimsleur Language Programs has populated websites with two highly sellable language-learning concepts: the `principle of anticipation' and `graduated interval recall'. The former refers to the interval during which the student is challenged to retrieve information to which he has been exposed, occasionally take some small step in the processing of it, and then utilize that information in a response. PLP has refined just the right intervals to facilitate prompt but unhurried responses.

`Graduated interval recall' refers to the time lag between the initial learning of a language component and its subsequent reintroduction in a new conversation. Here, too, the Pimsleur method shows its debt to years of practice and research. By my lights, they do this perfectly.

Regionally and socially, PLP's German course(s) aim at an `educated' dialect that will prepare the student to be conversant throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

German I, II, and III are available in cassette tape and CD versions, packaged attractively and with sufficient ruggedness to survive both winter and summer Midwestern temperatures in my car.

5 out of 5 stars Sehr Gut.......2005-10-06

I took two years of German in high school, which was some decades ago, and after a ski trip to Austria I decided to brush up on my German. I've bought numerous books, dvds, tapes, etc. and for learning conversational German this has been far and away the best. It's pricey, no doubt, but it's very, very well done and very user friendly. I had a professor in college who said we learn the most in an area of "just manageable difficulty". In other words, stretched and challenged but not made to despair. This is the arena the Pimsleur cd/tapes work in.
I liked this one (German II) so well, I also bought 3 and 4. Two is the most well done, the guy on three sounds a bit like he's being held against his will, but the folks on this one are engaging and pleasant. They combine techniques of having you repeat German phrases with having you answer questions in German (can be a bit challenging) and a couple of other techniques. There is a bit of the unavoidable "canned" feel to the conversations, but nowhere near as much as in other tapes I've tried. I felt like I learned a lot and on a trip to Switzerland this year I was able to understand a lot and be conversational.
As I said III and IV, especially IV are not quite so well done, but II is excellent, and a lot cheaper than the average German course at a college would be. The only thing it lacks is much help with syntax, you probably need to plow through a German grammar book on your own for that.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Pimsleur German series........2004-11-18

If you thought Pimsleur German I helped you to learn German, you really must move onto Pimsleur German II. It is, without a doubt, one of the best tools you could possibly use to progress from barely being able to get your message across to being able to express not only what you want, but what you think about things.

Both Pimsleur German I and II were updated in 2002, so they represent the best of decades of trying to perfect the language learning experience. What you will find in Pimsleur German II can't easily be found anywhere else, because it teaches you to speak the way Germans speak, complete with the little inflections that you would use without even thinking in your native language. I've never seen such things in any other program.

If you have the means, move onto Pimsleur German II as soon as possible after finishing Pimsleur German I. It will put you light years ahead in only a few short weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-04-01

The Pimsleur Program is great. I took German in high school and in college for about 3 years, but I learned more from this CD course in just one month. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to learn the basics of a new language. I'm halfway through the Level III edition now.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have.......2007-09-03

This book is a necessity for anyone learning Spanish. Conjugating verbs is one of the hardest things to learn. This book is very useful. It has translations and conjugations of verbs listed in alphabetical order. The beginning of the book has information and practice activities to help with verb conjugations. It also comes with a cd rom that has a couple activities to help you learn. They are not bad activities, but they are also not the best learning tool I have ever used. The book is well worth it though.

I first checked this book out from the library. It is so good , I purchased a copy from Amazon. This book has the normal words used everyday. It is easy to follow and you do it at you own pace. You are learning how to speak in easy short sentences. It has flash cards that speed up the learning process. Of all the reference books I have, this is the one I pick up first. This book will be great if you are going on vacation and only need to know certain things :)

5 out of 5 stars Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day.......2006-08-15

This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
It is done in a logical manner and in workbook form. It has stickers for nouns and cutouts for flashcards of the important beginning vocabulary in the book. It is fun to do and quick to finish.

4 out of 5 stars A good Start .......2006-04-07

I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product.......2006-02-24

We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try. My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun. I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a traveler, Not for a class.......2005-08-12

I began using this as text for a class of mine, but quickly only used it as a supplement. You are to simply copy the words and say them in 10 minutes each day. It's a great theory, but very difficult to absorb any language through this method. The vocabulary is bent toward the traveler - what to pack, where's the restaurant, I'd like to order, that type of phrasing.

The color pictures make it seem like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but the exercises were a bit stale for anyone under high school age.

Overall, this is a good crash course if you're about to leave for a week's vacation in a Spanish-speaking country. To learn how to truly communicate in Spanish, you need something more thorough on grammar points and practice. The fact that no CD comes with it also makes pronunciation a concern for the novice learner.

For the much younger child, Flip Flop Spanish is a great tool which comes with a CD.

3 out of 5 stars Full of unsubstantiated statements.......2007-09-24

This book is full of generalizations and unsubstantiated statements. Even looking at the back cover you can tell it did not get much backing from serious people (the praise comes from other authors of similar books, not from researchers or universities, and the authors are not antropologists or sociologists, just regular people). You will find many statements like "90% of all people use a palms up handshake" without any studies or anything else to back that up. In general, it's like reading USA Today, no more, no less.

If you read a lot of business books, this one is must have in your repertoire. It is a combination of lessons on manners, subconscious mind and communication. If anything, one will learn what is it that makes men and women different in the workplace and social gatherings, how to "read" people's reactions based on their body language and there are even helpful hints on how to diffuse conflict, uncertainty, or fend contempt from co-workers and superiors. One will learn good sales and negotiation tricks that are helpful during interview process, or office politics and power play. For well rounded business person, this book is a must have. Add to it work on NLP, emotional intelligence and business ethics and one can conquer it all. While some may find this book to be a tool on teaching manipulation, others will find it to be a useful too on staying ahead of the game. The only disagreement I have with the authors is in reference to the use of cell phone during interview process. I totally disagree that it is acceptable to act "busy and important" during interview process regardless if one is in the waiting area or in the room with the person interviewing them. If person interviewing you would rather take a phone call than listen to what you have to say during scheduled interview time, it is a sign that your interview is either not going well or you have lost the game already to another candidate. Why get more vulgar and add oil to the fire by making or receiving cell phone call. Your cell phone should be off (or in your car) while you are in the interview room. I am sure that any career coach or human resources professional will agree with me on this point.

5 out of 5 stars Open your eyes to the hidden language.......2007-08-26

People in general can not hold back their body language when they feel strongly about an issue. As a Marketing major in college, I am finding observing the body language signals discussed in this book really does apply to the thoughts and feelings a person is feeling. You will be amazed by how you will look at people differently, more perceptively. A lot of times you will find that people are really feeling differently than you thought after a conversation just based on body language alone. Remeber any given message is 55% physical expresstions, 38% vocal (pitch), and 7% words alone. This book will indeed give you an advantage in every social interaction, who is feeling happy, frustrated, or bored. A great dive in to the subtle jungle of body language!

4 out of 5 stars A great place to start..........2007-08-21

First off, I wish to preface this review by stating that I typically don't read these types of books. I spend my days absorbed in the 'financial world' as V.P. of Marketing for my company. Ergo, when I come home at night from the daily grind, or on weekends, I try my very best to forget about all of the craziness that I am immersed in during the work week. I typically enjoy reading classical literature or a handful of great, modern fiction writers of today (i.e. John Irving, Updike, et al...). However, a co-worker of mine highly recommended this one, so I gave it a shot. All in all, it exceeded my expectations, and I was for the most part pleasantly surprised.

If you are an experienced sales person (and no, that doesn't mean you have the films "Glengarry Glen Ross", "Boiler Room" and "Wall Street" memorized word for word) than odds are this book won't prove to be all that enlightening. You've already, like myself, pretty much mastered the art of understanding and using to your advantage the art of non-verbal communication. However, if you are just venturing into the business world or wish to become a super-star salesperson (God help you!), then by all means make this purchase. There is no doubt about it, more times than not it's not what you say, it's how you say it that really matters. For example, your posture, eye contact, facial expressions, common body gestures, handshakes, etc... all matter more than you will ever know. This book will assist you tremendously in understanding the great art of reading people and at the same time it teaches you to carry yourself in the best, most positive way possible. Like the old cliche ad goes - 'Image is everything'.

Allan & Barbara Pease need to be commended on their excellent, well thought-out, helpful and very easy to read little book. I wish this instructive manual would have been around when I graduated from college and began my career search. Oh how it would have helped me back then! I had to learn the hard way, through the school of hard knocks. This book can save you a lot of time and energy. You will become a better interviewer and interviewee, a more sophisticated, intuitive salesperson and in many ways a much more respectful and considerate human being. If I was teaching a college course on non-verbal communication, I would definitely recommend this book to my students.
