Worth your money.......2006-01-31
McComiskey's 3-volume set on the "minor prophets" is outstanding, the best I have read. The exegesis is carefully done within the historical context and with a high view of biblical inspiration. The insights offered are rich, bringing out the many wonderful word-plays that the English reader misses. All three of these volumes are well worth their price.
Good!.......2005-12-04
It is a great tool for a study in minor prophets.
Only complaint about this edition it have too much blank spaces on pages. Are they left for study notes? Or product dimensions are chosen too big?
Review of The Minor Prophets, Vol. 1.......2005-10-06
I would have given the book a 5-start rating based on the sections on Hosea and Joel, but the expository commentary on Amos was not as good. Many references were made to "types of Christ" and also to passages in the New Testament at the expense of explaining the material at hand within the cultural context and the historical setting. On the other hand, the sections on Hosea and Joel were outstanding and extremely helpful in preparing a Sunday school lesson. I would buy this book again for the sections on Hosea and Joel (it is still a good bargain) and make sure to find another informative commentary on Amos.
The Minor Prophets.......1999-12-24
The Minor Prophets succesfully meets the expository and exegetical needs of students of the minor prophets. The amount of lexical and syntactial analyses of the Hebrew text are measured appropriately and do not dominate the exegetical portion of the commentary. Students of the original languages are aided by the scholars' thorough research; still, the authors leave enough room for readers to deal on their own with the important grammatical issues which surround the text. Where there are uncertainties as to the meaning of a particular word, such is clearly stated. Thankfully, several solutions are proposed nonetheless. Furthermore, sufficient attention is given to historical and cultural issues, issues which may influence one's interpretation of the text. Overall, the commentary is very well-written, easily read, and is sure to be of great benefit to any student of the Old Testament.
A great Commentary that takes The Word of God seriously.......1999-07-09
The commentary is devided in two sections on every text. 1)the exegetical part with the crux interpretum, then 2) the expository part.
I think this is a great way of writing a commentary because not all pastors and preachers know hebrew and if u don't a very exegetical commentary is rather booring to read. This commentary is great to read even if u don't know a word of hebrew. The exegetical part are good and explores the text very good. It gives you a feeling of the hebrew language and increase your understanding of the text.
McComiskey has really succeded in making the minor prophets understandable and he is almost narrative in his apporach to the minor prophets.
it is truly a great commentary and I know I will use it a great deal in my ministry and therefor I will strongly recommend it!

This excellent series concludes . . . .......2006-12-11
. . . with the addition of the Minor Prophets -- the twelve short books following Daniel which conclude the Christian Old Testament. This series provides a desperately needed resource for the serious Catholic Scripture student. This volume "Minor Prophets" is the seventh, and final result of that effort, following up on the well-received "Major Prophets".
I highly recommend the entire series, and have used the series in teaching on the collegiate level. A few years ago, I taught a class on the Minor Prophets. Should I do so again, I would seriously consider using this book as a recommended text.
The primary text is the Catholic version of the widely regarded "Revised Standard Version". Included as well is the New Latin Vulgate. Sandwiched between is excellent expository verse-by-verse commentary on the Scripture text. The commentary is taken from a conservative, traditional, yet scholarly Catholic perspective.
Very Highly Recommended

Book Description
Volume 1: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah
Volume 2: Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
There is generally no common material that binds together the works of the individual prophets that comprise the Twelve, but through Sweeney's commentary they stand together as a single, clearly defined book among the other prophetic books of the Bible. The Book of the Twelve Prophets is a multifaceted literary composition that functions simultaneously in all Jewish and Christian versions of the Bible as a single prophetic book and as a collection of twelve individual prophetic books. Each of the twelve individual books-Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi-begins with its own narrative introduction that identifies the prophet and provides details concerning the historical setting and literary characteristics. In this manner each book is clearly distinguished from the others within the overall framework of the Twelve. By employing a combination of literary methodologies, such as reader response criticism, canonical criticism, and structural form criticism, Sweeney establishes the literary structure of the Book of the Twelve as a whole, and of each book with their respective ideological or theological perspectives. An introductory chapter orients readers to questions posed by reading the Book of the Twelve as a coherent piece of literature and to a literary overview of the Twelve. Sweeney then treats each of the twelve individual prophetic books in the order of the Masoretic canon, providing a discussion of each one's structure, theme, and outlook. This is followed by a detailed literary discussion of the textual units that comprise the book.

Outstanding.......2006-10-10
I have accumulated a couple of shelves full of books on the Minor Prophets. So when I find a work that provides insights that I haven't gleened from other commentaries I get excited, this book does exactly that. It is easy to read. It is not the first book on the Minor Prophets I would recommend, but if you already have a couple of good commentaries on the Minor Prophets, and you want something fresh, consider this volume.

A good, middle of the road, exposition. . ........2004-02-19
. . .of the first six Minor Prophets written specifically for the teacher or preacher. While not an in-depth scholarly commentary (and this is not the purpose of the series) major issues and questions concerning the reading and interpretation of these books is well-presented.
The professional student is probably going to wish to look elsewhere for more depth, but the pastor, looking for a preaching aid, or the adult Bible study facilitator will find the volume most rewarding.

Book Description
"And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, [the risen Jesus] interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself" (Lk 24:27).The church fathers mined the Old Testament throughout for prophetic utterances regarding the Messiah, but few books yielded as much messianic ore as the Twelve Prophets, sometimes known as the Minor Prophets, not because of their relative importance but because of the relative brevity of their writings.Encouraged by the example of the New Testament writers themselves, the church fathers found numerous parallels between the Gospels and the prophetic books. Among the events foretold, they found not only the flight into Egypt after the nativity, the passion and resurrection of Christ, and the outpuoring of the Spirit at Pentecost, but also Judas's act of betrayal, the earthquake at Jesus' death and the rending of the temple veil. Detail upon detail brimmed with significance for Christian doctrine, including baptism and the Eucharist as well as the relation between the covenants. In this rich and vital resource edited by Alberto Ferreiro you will find excerpts, some translated here into English for the first time, from more than thirty church fathers, ranging in time from Clement of Rome, Justin Martyr and Irenaeus (late first and early second centuries) to Gregory the Great, Braulio of Saragossa and Bede the Venerable (late sixth to early eighth centuries). Geographically the sources range from the great Cappadocians--Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa--John Chrysostom, Ephrem the Syrian and Hippolytus in the East to Ambrose, Augustine, Cyprian and Tertullian in the West and Origen, Cyril and Pachomius in Egypt. Here is a treasure trove out of which Christians may bring riches both old and new in their understanding of these ancient texts.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Bible Study aid.......2005-06-16
This volume gives you a flavor and overview of the doctrine of the early fathers, especially how they interpreted the minor prophets. There is much to learn from the men who kept the Church united as one Holy Catholic Church for 1000 years.
An outstanding addition. . ........2004-02-10
. . .to one of the most important publishing events in Biblical studies in a long time -- the Ancient Christian Commentary series.
I have been generally very impressed with the New Testament volumes already published, and with the publication of Genesis 1-11 -- but had been much less pleased with the quality of the Genesis 12-Deuteronomy volume. "The Twelve Prophets" however, takes its rightful place at the very top of what this commentary series has to offer.
All twelve prophets are handled in depth and detail -- even those which are very short, demonstrating the importance and esteem in which the early Christians held these books. Any serious student of either early Church history or of the Minor Prophets themselves, cannot afford to be without this volume.
Very highly recommended.

Book Description
The Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor’s Bible Commentary is a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of their message, this twelve-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors’ studies worldwide.
The seventy-eight contributors come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. They represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible.
The Expositor’s Bible Commentary uses the New International Version for its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. Each book of the Bible has, in addition to its exposition, an introduction, outline, and bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views.

Review of set, not specific volume.......2007-09-06
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. To be fair, I have yet to use this particular volume. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource.
I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 12 volumes in this set. Every portion has been quite helpful, and this is an amazingly simple and inexpensive way to assemble a good library of commentaries on the entire Bible. Obviously the commentaries are not as thorough as one may find in other series, such as the excellent (although not yet quite complete) "New International Commentary on the New Testament" or a similar series. However, for most Christians who teach or lead small groups in their churches, this set can serve as a great resource to get started with, and one that can easily be supplimented with specific volumes that treat a book of the Bible in greater depth as those books are needed. Additionally, this resource can be more useful than a larger volume in situations where one is interested in looking at a few chapters of scripture at a time, or where one just needs to understand what a verse or two might mean. Thanks to the very clear and practical verse by verse organization, it's a terrific tool to do just that.
Also, I will add that (at the time of this writing) it should be possible to buy the entire set for around $150 or less, so I would suggest shopping a bit if you plan to purchase all 12 volumes.
Strongly recommended.

Book Description
A companion series to the Word Biblical Commentary, the Themes seek to distill the theological essence of the last seven biblical books of the Old Testament as interpreted in the more technical commentary series and to serve it up in ways that will enrich the preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship of God's people.
Customer Reviews:

. . ."Micah - Malachi" is a good, solid Protestant (but not dogmatically so) commentary which concentrates strongly on the integrity of the text. I used this book as a secondary reference for a Minor Prophets course I'm teaching and found it quite readable and useful. I was particularly pleased with Micah and Nahum.

. . .to an outstanding series.
I used other volumes in the Aramaic Bible series while in seminary, so it seemed only logical, now that I have begun teaching, to continue to do so. The Targum of the Minor Prophets has proven to be a valuable addition to my course materials on the Minor Prophets, provoking much excellent class discussion, and shedding light on difficult passages in this portion of Scripture.
Any serious student of the Minor Prophets, whether Christian or Jewish, should pay serious attention to this excellent work.
I highly recommend it.

I am in a group Bible study and we wanted to study the Old Testament Book of Hosea. We selected the Holman Commentary because it identifies main idea of each chapter and provides some meaning to the life and prophecy of Hosea.
