Book Description
The Osha examines a religion. (not a cult) practiced by hundreds of thousands of people in different countries principally Cuba, Brazil, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Latin America and most recently the United States. The Osha provides the stories, history, types and manner of divination, the procedures of vestment, names of the deities and everything which is part of the Yoruba/Santeria Religion. A bold work of great intimacy with "The Religion."

Good Book.......2007-01-18
What a wonderful Book to start out with when you are new to the religion!
Mixed feelings.......2007-01-18
Well, I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it is very thorough; on the other hand, there are bits and pieces that are not considered accurate in my lineage, and overall it seems to be a bit misogynistic. I guess my biggest concern has to deal with the section regarding the Asiento/Santo/Kariocha ceremony. While I can appreciate the author's desire to remove the secrecy element from the religion, there is something to be said for maintaining a degree of mystery, that allows an individual to experience something without preconceived notions. All I can say is that I am grateful that I had already been crowned before I read this book, and that I would discourage any uninitiated godchildren from reading this book simply because I wouldn't want to possibly ruin the joyful surprise and spiritual enlightment that can only come from an unbiased mind when presented with the Divine.
I would certainly recommend this book -- perceived errors and all -- to those who have already been initiated with their Santo, while cautioning others to practice self-restraint and to skip over those sections that deal with assorted initiations that they, themselves, have not yet received.
Respectfully,
Elaine Hall
The Osha.......2006-11-10
Great book. A lot of detail. Great for anybody who wants to learn.
Very thorough.......2006-02-23
This book on the religion is extremely and very thoroughly written. The amount of detail that is in this book is a very good introduction for any neophyte who has recently been initiated into the religion and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in learning about the Lukumi or who needs to be educated on certain topics. However, any book written on the religion always leaves out information that is supposed to be kept secret and I am glad not ALL of the information was revealed. Nevertheless, it is a great read and interesting information has been written.
The Osha.......2005-07-13
I found it very informative, it explains way too much on my religion but, in part it is good, like that people get a better and total impression of what it is all about and that we do not worship the devil, but orishas whom were once on earth. The writer did a good job in the translation of the original book.
I would also like to have the spanish version which I had, and lent it to someone, but it never came back to me. I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know when it will be available or if there is a used one that someone wants to sell.
Thank you.

I am an Olorisa (priest/Santero) with over 29 years of training.......2007-07-08
I am an Olorisa (priest/Santero) with over 29 years of training and experience.
Based on my credentials, I must say that over a span of more than 30 years Migene Gonzalez-Wippler has put out more misinformation on Orisa worship/Santeria than any single author I can think of. There is no enlightenment on the religion I serve in these pages. To really learn about Orisa worship/Santeria ask an Olorisa (priest/Santero).
Sincerely,
Temujin Ekunfeo Ala Aganju
A new Santera's View.......2007-03-25
This book has been instrumental in providing me with factual information about many things. I love the index and glossary - truly makes it a reference book, with yoruban content.
An excellent book for those new to the religion.
There could be more info on Odudua - every reference I read says something different.
I have received Odudua and what was written here has something major lacking.
Overall - very good.
Good intro to Santeria.......2006-11-15
This is a pretty good introduction to the basics of Santeria. There is some information in the book which is questionable, so I would say read this with a grain of salt and decide for yourself. The author does describe Palo Mayombe as dark and evil, and this is not so, Palo is a beautiful practice and should not be degraded like this. That aside, this was one of my first books on Santeria and it does give good descriptions of readings, recieving beads and warriors, asiento, and more. There are also several photographs of altars, botanicas, and fetishes. For the most part, a good solid book. For difinitive answers, seek out a santera or santero.
A Must Have for your library.......2006-03-13
This book is a very intense one which tells of the ways of the Santeria Religion. It is clear and precise. Not for initiates or beginners you truely must have some level of understanding of the religion before reading this book. I highly recommend it to all of the priests and priestesses out there whom have serious convictions.
I LOVED IT .......2005-05-28
At first she had me worried because it sounded like she was not accualy in santeria, but then I read on and realized she was. I liked the depth she whent on this subject, it wasn't too much and it wasn't too little. I also liked how much she described the evil part of santeria and how to stay away from it. My personal favorite in this book is all of her stories that had happend to her, or told to her,or what happend to her friends. I highly recomend this book to any one who is looking for information on santeria. It is one of my top books in my libary and should be in yours too. Trust me, I loved it.
Book Description
They can be found along the side streets of many American cities: herb or candle shops catering to practitioners of Voodoo, hoodoo, Santería, and similar beliefs. Here one can purchase ritual items and raw materials for the fabrication of traditional charms, plus a variety of soaps, powders, and aromatic goods known in the trade as "spiritual products." For those seeking health or success, love or protection, these potions offer the power of the saints and the authority of the African gods.
In Spiritual Merchants, Carolyn Morrow Long provides an inside look at the followers of African-based belief systems and the retailers and manufacturers who supply them. Traveling from New Orleans to New York, from Charleston to Los Angeles, she takes readers on a tour of these shops, examines the origins of the products, and profiles the merchants who sell them.
Long describes the principles by which charms are thought to operate, how ingredients are chosen, and the uses to which they are put. She then explores the commodification of traditional charms and the evolution of the spiritual products industry--from small-scale mail order "doctors" and hoodoo drugstores to major manufacturers who market their products worldwide. She also offers an eye-opening look at how merchants who are not members of the culture entered the business through the manufacture of other goods such as toiletries, incense, and pharmaceuticals. Her narrative includes previously unpublished information on legendary Voodoo queens and hoodoo workers, as well as a case study of John the Conqueror root and its metamorphosis from spirit-embodying charm to commercial spiritual product.
No other book deals in such detail with both the history and current practices of African-based belief systems in the United States and the evolution of the spiritual products industry. For students of folklore or anyone intrigued by the world of charms and candle shops, Spiritual Merchants examines the confluence of African and European religion in the Americas and provides a colorful introduction to a vibrant aspect of contemporary culture.

Wanted more.......2007-03-10
I liked this book. It was interesting to learn about how African belief systems were transformed in the New World--and how profit was made from those transformed beliefs, mostly by white people. The author danced around this contradiction a bit but never really addressed it. I wish she had.
I felt disappointed by her section on High John the Conqueror Root. Her hints that the root is something other than Ipomoea jalapa were intriguing, but she never came to any conclusion about the herb's actual identity. This mirrored her hesitation about addressing the contradiction of white retailers selling the props of African American magic to black people.
This book had a lot of nifty details, though. I thoroughly enjoyed finding out what Indio's incense powder is made out of, for instance.
Groundbreaking Work.......2006-06-04
Carolyn Long's book is one of the foremost works on the subject of African American conjure. In fact, it was the first book-length work to examine modern hoodoo shops, which are its primary focus. I strongly recommend it as an interesting and informative read.
An interesting history of voodoo/hoodoo supplies.......2004-02-15
What an impressive book! Ms. Long has definitely done her homework on this tome. I have wondered for many years about the sources she discusses in this book, and I find it thorough, open-minded and extremely enlightening. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone curious about those strange little bottles of oils and perfumes, packets of powder, 7-day candles with silkscreened decorations on them, and any and all accoutrements of this most fascinating of subjects. I look forward to seeing more of her work!
perfect addition to my library.......2002-10-19
I have been researching hoodoo and voodoo for the past two years, but none of the books I've come across compare to Spiritual Merchants. Not only is it honest, but it's simple...it reads almost like a conversation. I appreciate the oodles of images and merchants, especially since Long distinguishes between their races. Unfortunately, most of the web sites are defunct. I will treasure this book always!
One of a Kind.......2001-07-26
What a great treat it's been to read Spiritual Merchants. Carolyn Long knew she was covering new ground, and it's obvious from the writing that she relished the field work. But what's at least as impressive is the depth of archival research. The preliminary history of Voodoo and hoodoo in the U.S. is really incomparable for its clarity and coherence. Carolyn Long should be congratulated for a terrifically written book--and UTP deserves the same for a beautifully produced book at a reasonable price. It's sure to be a standard for years to come.
Book Description
The magickal methods and esoteric knowledge of medieval Europe (476 to 1453 C.E.) form the ancestral backbone of modern ceremonial magick. To understand medieval magick, its necessary to know the primary repositories of this knowledge - the grimoires of spells, incantations, and ritual instructions for working with angels and conjuring spirits. And to understand the grimoires, you must delve into the life and times of the magicians who wrote them.
Scholar and magician Aaron Leitch sheds light upon the greatly misunderstood subject of the medieval mage in this comprehensive reference manual. In addition, he provides valuable comparisons among the magical practices described in the grimoires and various shamanic methods of working with the spirit world.
Customer Reviews:
Excellant reference book.......2007-06-06
Arron's book is excellant . I have been using it in conjunction with Kraigs Modern Magick & Theory.
Whereas Kraigs is more of a step by step, Aaron divides his by category but get you to the same place
The two companion each other perfectly.
What I liked best about it is that it takes the confusion out of which grimore focuses on which subject matter. Also, if you are a classic magician like Poke Runyon, this will assist in helping you to keep that tradition.
It is very well researched and has a good bibliography in the back.
Whether an arm chair mage or practicing magician, this is definately one that deserves to be on your book shelf. I wish this one of the first books I had bought, along with Kraigs, it would had fulfilled most of my questions.
Kudos
Destined to become a classic text.......2007-04-19
Aaron Leitch's book is an incredible source book, giving overviews of the historical grimoires such as the Picatrix, the Lemegeton and the Red Dragon. Aaron also covers topics that are generally included in a grimoire, which can give you, the reader, ideas for yours if you have one. A very useful book, it gives me quite the advantage in my research, as most of the information provided is hard to find, and once found, must then be sifted and sorted. Secrets of The Magickal Grimoires is everything that the historical grimoires offer, but condensed and revised for a modern age of reader. If I had five thumbs, they'd all be up.
A New Standard Reference.......2006-10-13
Every so often a book turn up that fits the "must have" category for students of magick. Secrets of the Magickal Grimoirs is one of them, in a class with Regardie's The Golden Dawn, Craig's Modern Magick, and Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice. "Secrets" trumps all three on "academic defensability", in that it keeps no secrets - very extensive source materials are accurately cited in the footnotes.
This is not the usual re-hash of widely published materials, with original fantasy and speculation added - Secrets is the result of a major research project supported by a small community of serious occult scholars working to improve their understanding of Mideval magick. Secrets of the Magickal Grimoirs presents the current "state of the art" in these studies in plain language, organized so that a complete beginner will learn everything necessary to understand the more technical chapters. Obscure language is kept to a minimum and new terms are explained clearly. "Secrets" is one of those rare books that is equally useful whether your interest is purely academic, or 100% practical.
If you are interested in the historical origins, early social context, and development of magick as we know it today, you will find it here. If you are interested in the working principles of magick which bridge theory to practice, that's here as well: Leitch wastes no time arguing whether or not the magick might actally work, he goes directly to how and why it works, from both psychological, meatphysical, theological, and nuts-and-bolts practical perspectives.
But most importantly, Secrets of the Magickal Grimoirs is the only "operators manual" for actually using such classics as the Greater and Lesser Keys of Solomon, the Legemeton, etc. "Secrets" provides an accurate historical context for understanding where these works came from, explains their obscure terminology, and unravels their riddles by supplying the missing links - everything the original users were expected to "already know". Before "Secrets", most working magicians could mine the old grimiors for useful material to incoroprate in their own work. After "Secrets", most working magicians can actually use the old grimoirs as their authors intended.
Secrets of the Magickal Grimiors is fully supported by an active online mailing list and archive. The Solomonic list community provides a friendly venue for discussion and questions on any topic related to "Solomonic magick", and many of the participants are working magicians who are actually using the material. Visit check Yahoo! Groups for the word "solomonic", and you're in.
My only criticism of this book, is that it does not include the actual grimoirs. But if you are reading this review, that should be no problem: They are in the public domain and can be downloaded from online archives (including the files section of the Solomonic list pages).
If this book is not on your shelf, fill the gap! Even if you never make practical use of the how-to material, this book is certain to expand your understanding of the meaning, and context, of real magick in both the Mideval and the modern world.
Excellent work!.......2006-10-11
Medieval and renaissance magic has always been a fascination of mine, but also a source of the greatest frustration. I think for me the toughest issue has been understanding the material in the older tomes enough to come up with a coherent system in which to use the material. That is why I was so excited to find this book! I'm still plowing through it, however, I was so pleased with what I have read so far, that I had to write this review!
One of the burning questions that always arose for me was how the authors of the older tomes came up with the material, and how the culture of the day influenced their magick. I always thought if I were to truly understand medieval magick and how its done, I must try to place myself within medieval magician's shoes and see the magick from their point of view. Lo and behold, this is exactly what Leitch attempts to do in the first part of the book! He gives an enlightening view of the history and evolution surrounding the magick, which has given me a much better understanding the of material itself.
Currently, I am reading the 2nd part of the book which focuses on practical application. Finally, I can go to ONE reference book for information and instructions! Of course, I will still use the old tomes for cross referencing, but this book makes practicing the magick soo much easier! I especially like the magickal timing instructions, which I have already used for other personal work with much success! I cant wait to finish the book and start evoking!
Riddled with serious Mistakes.......2006-09-16
Having read the promotional piece on leitch's book I was rather looking forward to receiving my copy of it.
It is a rather large impressive looking tome so I got settled with a cup of tea in hand into my comfortable reclining armchair for a good lengthy read.
Unfortunately time and time again I had this nagging sense that something wasn't quite right,as I read through chapter by chapter, which later became quite apparent, this author does not know enough about effective evocation to write about it.
Here's a case in point and I'll qoute from his book "It seems the modern practice among the Goetic practitioners is to wear the sigil of the demon as a lamen during the evocation. "
Apparently Leitch jumps in and arrives at this incorrect notion because he only found modern references eg. Crowley which mentioned the wearing of sigils?
Actually had he done his homework in a more scholarly fashion, instead of racing to get this brick in print, he would have come across Petersons refernce of the sloane MS which mentions that practitioners did all wear these sigils on their person.
The wearing of Sigils is the correct ancient practice, it is not a modern trend at all.
It is very unwise practise not to wear the sigil, Leitch forgets or perhaps doesn't realise that dabbling in this art can have serious consequences both psychologically as well as in terms of
things going wrong with the outcome.
If you are seriously considering pursuing this art do so carefully and wisely with the best sources of information you can get...needless to say you won't find what you really NEED n this volume unfortunnately.
Then we move along onto something else which is even more absurd, Leitch writes "The idea is to summon the demon with all the conjurations and `requisites' outlined in the Goetia, but to never have to repeat these ceremonies twice for any one spirit."
Where on Earth did Leitch come up with this notion? was he drinking at the time of conducting his research? or is he just adding nonsense to make his work seem more trendy with the new age readers out there?
If you go through the Goetia there is nowhere in the text that says you must only evoke each spirit once.
This is another Folly on Leitch's part, overall there are enough incorrect assumptions and directions in this large volume to get the inexperienced practitioner into all sorts of trouble if one follows Leitch's unwise practices and/or heads his foolish advice.
In actual practice you HAVE to evoke that spirit at least a second time to give thanks after the magickal working has been accomplished.
I was really disappointed that this book which I was waiting for with gleeful anticipation, turned out to be an error riddled tome which cannot be considered a serious study of any sort.
I would suggest you save the money for other works which are much better than this inept attempt.
Instead of this book I recomend you read "Ceremonial Magic & The Power of Evocation: A System of Personal Power" by Joseph Lisiewski and What I consider to be the very best work on Solomonic Evocation to ever appear in print "The Book of Solomon's Magick" by Carroll Poke Runyon also his DVDs "The Magick of Solomon" and "The dark Mirror of magick" are very well worth getting in combination with his book.
Customer Reviews:
an enjoyable and informative read.......2007-08-23
I checked this out for recreational reading (I like interesting non fiction) and it was one of the best written non fiction books I've read. The voice is easy to read, engaging and doesn't distract from the content with an overly dry academic tone. I have no particular investment in the subject so I can't say if this is the best book on the subject but for someone without much background knowledge on this religion its a good introduction. It very effectively explains not only practices and beliefs, but the way of thinking that fundementally describes the basis of the religion. I this the author was a particularly good source for this knowledge because though both of his parents are priests of the religion, he is an anthropolgist (if I'm remembering correctly, it's something like that) giving him the insider acess rarely afforded to non members and the objective analytical perspective members of any religion rarely have for their own belief system.
recommended for those interested in anthropology, non western culture, perspective and religion
bias.......2006-11-10
This is a nicely written book, although I do not know if it's factual or not, due to the author's stance today. I think something of credibility is lost by stating at the start that you no longer believe in this faith yourself, as the author has. I'd like to find a book on this subject that is written by an author who still embraces the faith.
The Spirituality & Science of Santeria.......2005-09-27
This book is really informative as it gives you a glimpse of the spiritual side. However what makes this gem stand out is that it explains Santeria from a scientific, scholarly viewpoint as well. It provides the spiritual symbolism and delves deep into it's origins and provides a great observation on the religion. It will be a great introduction ushering you into the great ways of the Orishas, and backing it with sound theroies that validate the Santeria as an equal religon to the major religons of the world.
IT IS PERFECT.......2005-04-30
I have been looking every where for information on Santeria and this book was the best that I found so far. It doesn't just cover the basics like other books do, it goes in depth about the history of this religion and why it is so secrete in the U.S. It also tells the reader much more about each Orisha, like thier favorite food, color, power, ect. than any where that I have found. This book by far is teaching me a whole lot more than any thing else. I highly recomend this book for those who are getting to know Santeria, it is perfect.
History of the beliefs, rituals and culture of Santeria.......2005-02-10
Santeria is a growing religion in America with Caribbean origins, and Miguel De La Torre offers an informed and informative history of the beliefs, rituals and culture of Santeria in Santeria: The Beliefs And Rituals Of A Growing Religion In America. Santeria's Afro-Cuban roots are traced to cultural clashes, with its evolving spiritual roots receiving close explanation by an author who was reared in Santeria and clearly provides a basic understanding of its myths, rituals, and its modern role in both Latin and American communities today.
Book Description
Santeria, also known as Yoruba, Lukumi, or Orisha, was originally brought to the Americas from Africa by enslaved peoples destined for the Caribbean and South America. By the late 1980s it was estimated that more than 70 million African and American people participated in, or were familiar with, the various forms of Santeria, including traditional religions in Africa, Vodun in Haiti, Candomble in Brazil, Shango religion in Trinidad, Santeria in Cuba and, of course, variants of all of these in the United States. Today, there are practitioners around the world including Europe and Asia. Because of the secretive nature of the religion, it has been difficult to get accurate and objective information, but here, Clark introduces readers to the religion, explores the basic elements, including the Orisha, and answers the many questions Santeria arouses in observers and practitioners alike. Santeria was brought to the United States in two principle waves, one in the early 1960s after the Cuban Revolution and later by the Marielitos who escaped from the island in the 1980s. Since then it has spread to the larger Hispanic community, to the African American community, and to other segments of society as well. Today, practitioners can be found in every state, and interest in Orisha and related traditions has gained popularity. As the number of practitioners has grown so has public awareness. In this compelling introduction, Clark answers such questions as where did this religion come from? What do practioners believe? Is it a cult? What takes place at a ritual event? How does it view death and the afterlife? Is there ritual sacrifice? Clark, a practitioner as well as a scholar of the faith, dispels the myths that surround this religious practice, and brings readers to a better understanding of this growing faith in America.

Book Description
Yoruba theology teaches that there are 401 powers of the right ("angels") called Orisha whose role is to act as protectors and facilitators of humankind; there are also 201 powers of the left called Ajogun ("demons") whose role is to present humans with challenges and obstacles. Eshu's place is unique because he is both an Orisha and the leader of the Ajogun! He is the one in four-hundred-and-one and the one in two-hundred-and-one.

Why 4 stars.......2007-07-07
I think that this is a wonderful little booklet that would answer a lot of a uninformed persons questions. The best on the market that I know of at the moment. I give it 4 stars as I want to acknowledge that it is a growing faith and newer booklets will be needed to reflect that change in the future.
Great Tool for anyone.......2007-01-06
As an initiate who is just coming into the kind of effortless comfort and understanding of my spiritual path, this book, the first that I have read from Baba Raul, is a great tool for me and anyone who is looking to further their knowledge of the orisha (in layman's terms). I didn't feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the information provided (a feeling that I have felt with publishings from other authors), and I look forward to reading the entire series.
a gem.......2004-12-18
Baba Canizares has led many down the path to the Orishas, and this book is a living reminder (RIP Baba).
This covers a lot of ground, from varying faces of the Eshus, to Divination and some of the Odu of Eleggua. The best features of this book, however, is how he ties everything together with his very experienced interpretations and includes references and commentary comparing the practices to those of other systems (such as Tantra for example).
Always trust in the work of Baba Canizares.
A must read!.......2004-10-17
If you follow the ways or Orisha's, what are you waiting for? this book helps unravel just a few of the Mystery's that is Ehsu, it helps you understand the role he plays in Santeria, and in all of our lives.
Also, great prayers for Obi and even how to throw Obi in detail,
While some books only show the patens of Obi: Alafia, Itawa,Ejife, okana and Oyeku....
What happens if two pieces land one anther? This book explains it.
This book also tells and explains the Paths of this most powerful Orisha, filled to the brim with well-written stories about Eshu.
I have it setting next to me at all times; I'm always using the book as a reference.

This book is simply wonderful. Jam packed with lots of information that is not readily or easily obtainable! I recommed this book (without reservation) for anyone interested in the Orishas or the Orisha Movement! Although the book may appear small and useless, don't judge it by it's cover.....it is a great starting place to learn more about your personal Orisha!

"Creole Religions stands out as vastly superior to the theologically oriented introductory-level material available up to this point and should serve as an indispensible teaching tool in departments of anthropology, sociology, literary criticism and history of religions."
Journal of Religion
"Unique to such a study, this book uses extracts from novels . . . to illustrate some points. [A] fine text."
Library Journal
The book provides a unique sociocultural, historical and political analysis of Caribbean religion.
Centro Journal
"Bravo! A well-written text that de-mystifies Creole spiritual practices and places them in historical perspective is a major contribution to the twenty-first century. Over and above the accurate and detailed descriptions of the various spiritual practices of the Caribbean, the authors have clearly delineated the historic origin and connection of Creole practices to African religions, often indicating the specific regions of Africa from which they came. This volume provides an excellent overview of the history and culture of the Caribbean islands and is the first of its kind to present comprehensive, well-researched treatise of Obeah, Myalism, Quimbois, Espiritismo, Vodou, Santeria, Regla de Palo, and the Abukua Secret Society as well as the more recent traditions of Rastafarianism and Pocomania. This work is interesting and will leave the reader well informed about the Caribbean island's religions, practices, and culture, complete with present-day expressions in the Caribbean. It will be an important text for the study of the Caribbean, religion, ethnicity, race, and culture.

New West Indian Guide
Creolizationthe coming together of diverse beliefs and practices to form new beliefs and practices-is one of the most significant phenomena in Caribbean religious history. Brought together in the crucible of the sugar plantation, Caribbean peoples drew on the variants of Christianity brought by European colonizers, as well as on African religious and healing traditions and the remnants of Amerindian practices, to fashion new systems of belief.
Creole Religions of the Caribbean offers a comprehensive introduction to the syncretic religions that have developed in the region. From Vodou, Santería, Regla de Palo, the Abakuá Secret Society, and Obeah to Quimbois and Espiritismo, the volume traces the historical-cultural origins of the major Creole religions, as well as the newer traditions such as Pocomania and Rastafarianism.
Chapters devoted to specific traditions trace their history, their pantheons and major rituals, and their current-day expressions in the Caribbean and in the diaspora. The volume also provides a general historical background of the Caribbean region.
Creole Religions of the Caribbean is the first text to provide a study of the Creole religions of the Caribbean and will be an indispensable guide to the development of these rich religious traditions and practices.

Students of ATR: Recommended Reading.......2005-02-24
"Creole Religions of the Caribbean: An Introduction from Vodou and Santeria, to Obeah and Espiritismo (Religion, Race and Ethnicity" provides an excellent, scholarly over view of many religions and paths based on African Traditional Religion (ATR). This book paints a very clear portrait of what all of these practices have in common with each other and with ATR as well as how they differ. Anyone who studies Pan-African religions, comparative religion, African mythology and folklore or alternative spirituality, as well as those engaged in Caribbean studies will find "Creole Religions of the Caribbean" of great interest. There is no need to languish in mystery on these topics with such a solid piece of research as this on hand to resource. Written by two university professors "Creole Religons of the Caribbean" is not for the faint-hearted or light reader; this is the real deal.
Book Description
Long cloaked in protective secrecy, demonized by Western society, and distorted by Hollywood, Santería is at last emerging from the shadows with an estimated 75 million orisha followers worldwide. In The Altar of My Soul, Marta Moreno Vega recounts the compelling true story of her journey from ignorance and skepticism to initiation as a Yoruba priestess in the Santería religion. This unforgettable spiritual memoir reveals the long-hidden roots and traditions of a centuries-old faith that originated on the shores of West Africa.
As an Afro-Puerto Rican child in the New York barrio, Marta paid little heed to the storefront botanicas full of spiritual paraphernalia or to the Catholic saints with foreign names: Yemayá, Ellegua, Shangó. As an adult, in search of a religion that would reflect her racial and cultural heritage, Marta was led to the Way of the Saints. She came to know Santería intimately through its prayers and rituals, drumming and dancing, trances and divination that spark sacred healing energy for family, spiritual growth, and service to others. Written by one who is a professor and a santera priestess, The Altar of My Soul lays before us an electrifying and inspiring faith–one passed down from generation to generation that vitalizes the sacred energy necessary to build a family, a community, and a strong, loving society.

Santeria!.......2007-05-06
I had to read this book for a religion and race class, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by it. The visual imagery that the descriptions give you about Santeria are amazing. The book is also very informative about the religion itself. Marta Morena Vega has written a great book! If anyone is looking to learn about the religion of Santeria or needs to write a paper about it...this would be the perfect book to get.

Sister Marta Moreno Vega has written a wonderful book on Cuban Santeria. Each chapter is brimming with her personal experiences, words of wisdom, and great information on Orisha. Vega has an amazing descriptive writing style that helps the reader to truly feel as though they are a part of the story being related. If you are interested in Cuban Santeria, this is the book for you.
An Excellent View Into One Woman's Life and Spiritual Growth.......2006-10-15
As a devotee and priest within this religion, I am always fascinated by the stories of others and how they became a part of it. Iya Vega paints a realistic portrayal of her upbringing within New York's Spanish Harlem, detailing her relationship with her grandmother and her connection with her Afro Puerto-Rican heritage and allowing the reader the opportunity to experience what her life was like. This is not a How-To book of Santeria, but the story of one woman's life and her spiritual awakening to the tradition of her ancestors, although there is information about the faith. It is but one of many stories that needs to be told.
Revealing the Soul of Santeria.......2005-09-27
There are many books on Santeria that discuss its practices, rituals, and mysticism. Not many actually document one person's reason for entering the religion and one person's exciting journaey quite like this one. Dr. Vega's book reads like a journal while incorporating each Orisha's essence into a chapter. Dr. Vega tells a great story that everyone who has entered the religion but is not quite yet surrounded by a loving godfamily.
If you can read only one book on Santeria, read this one!.......2005-08-03
Of all the books that I have read on this beautiful faith, this is the most elegant and the most eloquent; and it is the only book available that I would recommend hands-down for anyone who desires accurate, well-thought and well-planned material on this Afro-Cuban religion. The author has written a book that will be known as a classic for years to come; she is to be commended for such a beautiful work!

I personally like all of Baba Raul Canizare's booklets on the Orishas, each booklet comes with various Patikis "Orisha Mythology and Legends" Songs, Chants, and Prayers. These booklets are a collection of the most popular Orishas as worshipped in the Orisha tradition of Lucumi. They are just booklets, and are good for the novice in the religion, or those who are curious about a certain Orisha. Worth the [money]. Check out the whole collection.
