Book Description
The Phoenix Affirmations, named for the town in which the principles were created and the mythological bird adopted by ancient Christians as a symbol of resurrection, offers disillusioned and spiritually homeless Christians and others a sense of hope and a more tolerant, joyful, and compassionate message than those we often hear from the media and some Christian leaders. These twelve central affirmative principles of Christian faith are built on the three great loves that the Bible reveals: love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self. They reflect commitments to environmental stewardship, social justice, and artistic expression as well as openness to other faiths. Transcending theological and culture wars, inclusive and generous in spirit and practice, these principles ask believers and seekers alike to affirm their Christian faith in a fresh way.

Progressive Christianity.......2007-05-21
The core values of Christianity are challenged in this summary of what many of today's Christians think and believe today.
Thoughtful & Thought-provoking.......2007-03-29
I won't go into much detail on the theology of this little book -- suffice it to say that the size of the book has nothing to do with the HUGE impact these affirmations will have on fundamental/conservative/evangelical/liberal Christianity. The thoughts expressed here are those of a "new" look -- progressive Christianity and so challenge the core beliefs of Christianity that the thoughts expressed here would be difficult to accept for any of the "normal" theological liones of thought.
Having said that, however, these affirmations are, as the authors clearly state, only a beginning in the process of discovering what Christianity will have to be about if it is to survive into the 21st century. Read this book with an open mind and heart and it will affirm and challenge you. Coming from an evangelical background, it was both challenging and frightening -- but not in a way that was altogether negative. Judging from the thought that went into these concepts, and the wave of interest they are generating around the USA (the world?), the church is alive ... and growing. It will truly be exciting to see what Christianity wil be like in the 21st century!
Faith for the 21st century.......2006-11-05
This book is an excellent summary of what thoughtful, progressive Christians are thinking today. It is [rpvocative, not exhaustive, in laying out an agenda for living out one's faith in this complex contemporary American culture. Both as an individual study and as a group discussion, the author helps Christians to articulate a stronger faith and non-beleivers to see a way to amke sense of the Christian gospel.
The Phoenix Affirmations.......2006-11-03
The Phoenix Affirmations was a real eye opener for me. It has caused me to look at Christianity in a whole new way. For me this book paints the future of the Christian church.
Welcome to Progressive Christianity.......2006-09-03
Eric Elnes is just one of many Christians trying to change the discussion of Christianity and Christian values in American culture today. This small book, built around the 12 affirmations he and colleagues, friends, and co-religionists in Arizona have put together, is a fine summation of what many Christians today would like folks to understand should be the character of 21st century Christianity. It is a book whose ideas resonate with those in other faiths as well. It should be an invitation to those who have walked away from the church to reconsider their faith and return to work with others to make sure the church is tolerant, inclusive, compassionate, and is a church that takes faith, prayer, and the Bible seriously (if not literally in the last case). Each chapter covers an affirmation, treating it in most cases with an incident drawn from Elnes's pastoral experiences. It is an easy read. Give it your consideration.

Offers hope to all sinners by reminding us of the power of Christ.......2007-01-17
Every Christian should buy this book. Alan Chambers and the leadership team at Exodus International have created a resource for the Church that is absolutely astounding and invaluable. The book opens with words of hope, power, and truth from Paul the Apostle:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 - ESV)
Over the years, I have known individuals who have struggled with homosexuality in the church and out of the church, some openly and others in private. I have known homosexuals in the workplace who have embraced this lifestyle and have no interest in Jesus Christ. These situations can be difficult at times to communicate the grace and uncompromising truth of Jesus Christ. How I wished I had this resource for those circumstances!
This groundbreaking book articulates better than any other evangelism book in the marketplace what it takes to effectively reach out to this community. Compassion, mercy, and the convicting truth of Christ flow from the pages of this book so that the Christian is forced to re-examine why and how they are evangelizing, how they befriend other sinners, and whether there is hypocrisy and insincerity in their approach. There are stories that will encourage and break your heart as you read about real personal battles over sin and the souls of men and women for the Gospel of Christ.
This resource so clearly addresses the topics of homosexuality, sin, Christ, and the Gospel that frankly, it should be required reading for sharing the Gospel to any sinner struggling with any sin--not just the sin of homosexuality. If you are looking to understand the biblical perspective on this issue, wanting to reach out to this community with Christ, desiring to be the best witness for Christ that is possible, read this book. In closing, this book offers hope to all sinners by reminding us of the power of Christ to deliver us from sin and be restored in fellowship to Him. - John Fallahee, ChristianBookPreviews.com
honest book about a controversial subject.......2006-12-22
Alan Chambers is the president of Exodus Internatinal, an organization that helps men and women leave the homosexual lifestyle, through a saving faith in Jesus Christ. Once a gay man himself, he is now a Christian, married, with a son and a daughter.
He makes no effort to justify the lifestyle or deny what the Bible says about it. He does, however, explode several popular secular myths about homosexuality. He also points out a shameful situation that exists in our churches. We send missionaries overseas, but fail to address the mission field in our own community. All too often the gay men and women who do attend church feel unwelcome, and too many times they are met with hostility and protestors. This book is geared toward churches that are willing to minister to homosexuals, and is an important resource for anyone interested in taking the gospel to the homosexual community. Alan Chambers will probably take some heat from both sides over this book, because it's about a very controversial subject. I will admit I approached it with some reservations and preconcieved opinions, most of which I learned in church. I'm glad I read it and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in ministry in this sadly neglected field.
Book Description
Attitudes toward homosexuality in the pre-modern Arab-Islamic world are commonly depicted as schizophrenic. On the one hand, Arabic love poetry, biographical works, and bawdy satires suggest that homosexuality was a visible and tolerated part of Arab-Islamic elite culture before the nineteenth century. On the other hand, Islam supposedly considers homosexuality an abomination and prescribes severe punishment for it.
In Before Homosexuality in the Arab-Islamic World, 1500-1800, Khaled El-Rouayheb shows that this apparent paradox is based on the anachronistic assumption that homosexuality is a timeless, self-evident fact to which a particular culture reacts with some degree of tolerance or intolerance. Drawing on poetry, belles lettres, biographical literature, medicine, physiognomy, dream interpretation, and Islamic legal, mystical, and homiletic texts, he shows that the culture of the period lacked the concept of homosexuality. Instead, paramount importance was given to distinctions that are not captured by that term-between active and passive sexual roles, between passionate infatuation and lust, and between penetrative and nonpenetrative intercourse.

Arab Instances of Male Homosexuality.......2006-08-17
El-Rouayheb looks at writings over 300 years in the Arab world to refute ideas that all forms of male homosexuality were punished or that all forms were widespread. He tries to answer how so many Arab men could openly praise the beauty of young men even if the Qu'ran may condemn such practices. Just as masculine Native American men could boogie with two-spirited men and this relationship was not seen as "same-sex," bearded Arab men could get down with younger males and not have their love be seen as that between two similars. The author tries to answer whether Michel Foucault's contentions could apply to the Arab world. In short, he maintains that "homosexuality" is too large an umbrella to translate the many dynamics that took place between older and younger males in that region at that time.
This book is much-needed and highly informative. If I could wave a wand and give a copy to every gay person and every Muslim or Arab, I would. This was a thoughtful eye-opener. As a non-Muslim and a non-Arab, I must admit that it is hard to be critical or refute this text. Since I don't know any better, I take the author at his word. I imagine that most "Western" readers will have this same feeling.
This book is not a "Who's Who of Gay Arabia." Besides Abu Nuwas, few famous names come up. The author doesn't address whether again-celebrated poet Rumi had homoerotic relationships or not, for example. With the exception of the painting on the cover, there is no section of photographs or reprints. I suppose this lack makes the book seem more serious to rigorous scholars. However, Boswell included visuals in his "Homosexuality, Christianity, and Social Tolerance." The internet provides many Arabic homoerotic paintings. Thus, I wish this author had done the same thing.
This book sometimes frustrates me with its disinterested, arm's length tone. Yes, this may make the author sound more objective and credible as a scholar, but there may be political ramifications to this text. Dr. Simon LeVay, the scientist who first argued for the existence of a "gay gene" has also made statements like, "Yes, I know if scientists find the gene, they may try to wash it out of human DNA." Similarly, this author never really says whether he supports the rights of consenting adult males, whether in the Arab or non-Arab regions, to fall in love or boogie with each other. Given the arrest of 52 gay men in Cairo and the execution of two gay teens in Iran recently, this book does nothing to ensure that tragedies like that won't happen again. This "constructionist" perspective, naively, washes its hands of modern, concrete issues around sexuality.
As important as Eve Sedgwick's "The Epistemology of the Closet" was to gay studies courses when I was in college, only the introductory chapter was ever assigned. The body chapters were just examples of a theme already set out. Time-strapped students assigned this book could easily get away with just reading the first and last chapters of the text.

Informative and Objective.......2000-03-28
This book was extremely helpful when I was writing a term paper for school on this exact topic. The information given is informative, interesting, and, most importantly, objectively written. The book does a great job of giving the reader an introductory overview of the various beliefs of world religions on the topic of homosexuality, and also why these beliefs are held.

An outstanding contribution. .......2006-12-28
Terry Brown's edited volume is a very important contribution for those seeking to understand global struggles over homosexuality within the Anglican/Episcopal tradition and other Christian bodies. The many voices here share many helpful analyses and perspectives. I've been waiting for a book like this for years.

A HOPEFUL book which revolutionized how I saw my struggle and helped point me toward what I was really needing!.......2006-05-15
This was a book that was out of print for a while so it is nice to hear that now it is available once again. We used this book in my homosexual support group to help us understand more of the roots of what my struggle really was- my cry for the safe emotional connection of the same sex (in my case, my mom) needs that I missed and craved so much especially as I lost my mother in a car accident with a drunk truck driver when I was 5 years old and then later came to have memories of some inappropriate sexual contact stuff that my father had with me- it just tore up my "world" inside and I went "searching" for a woman's comfort and love.
This book helped me to begin to understand what it was I was really craving and that it was not as much a sexual need as it was an emotional one and that I was meeting what God made as a very legitimate need (the comfort, love, security, and bonding from one's same sex parent) into an illegitimate need (lust and sex with women). Those were very difficult times for me and I am glad and thankful that the Lord gave me HOPE and revelation that proved to be true through books like this. It has been about over 15 years now I began really struggling in my early 20's and I want to ask you to hang in there too. There was hope for me and you know what?- God has hope that can really transform you too- I am so thankful for all that He has done in my life.
This book is a good start looking into what your cry for the same gender attraction is really about and you know what?- it isn't really about sexual intercourse and lust and stuff- its about our need for someone who represents my father or my mother who will take care of me in a safe way and love me and comfort me and be there for me and connect with me. With Jesus, there is hope, and you know what?- He DOES make a way and He has never left me to handle it on my own especially as I have cried out to Him for His help- He comes running. Do it and see. Watch what Jesus does. He has a way and when we stay honest with Him (it's taken going through a lot of tears for me though I don't know what He's got for another person, but all that crying when I remembered the things that hurt really helped) and He did provide different people and He continues to provide people and I find that these non-sexual, purer relationships sure have a lot more depth to them than the sexual one that I had or any of the lust-filled flirtatious ones had. I hope this helps someone. I know I sure needed a lot of help, but Jesus is soooooooooo good, my friend. He astounds me. He touches my heart and changes all that anger and all that rage and all that pain and all that coldness that I've had and takes it onto Himself and man, He starts to transform me when I think there's no way out and I don't know of how to get myself out. Jesus replied, "What is impossible with man is possible with God." (Luke 18:27) Take care, my fellow traveler and Jesus' very best to you in your journey.
Enlightening & encouraging.......2005-04-10
Eliabeth Moberly has revolutionized my understanding of homosexuality. She brings enlightenment to the struggle of the homosexual by suggesting he/she experienced and is still experiencing a deficit of love from the same-sex parent. This is accomplished by offering possibilities of separation, both physical and mental, from the parent. While these separations occur in a child's life both conciously and unconciously, Moberly does not lay blame continuously on the parent. Emphasizing the valid need that the homosexual is experiencing, she seeks to encourage Christians to love and step into non-erotic relationship with the homosexual. It is only through these relationships that valid needs will be met. She warns that fulfillment of legitimate needs takes much time and that one should not expect spontaneous results.
Dangerously misleading.......2005-01-31
This is the book that nearly every 'ex-gay' ministry has incorporated into their worldview. A book that has been the basis for many folk's struggles in 'reparative therapy'.
Moberly makes her case based on a review of a number of theories that were commonly held by psycologists in the early 1900's, theories that are generally not held by psycologists today. She has, to my knowledge, only written one other book on gender/sexuality and no longer researches this area. Her recommendations on the route to changing sexual orientation are the most contentious area of the book. These were based on her research of literature rather than mass interviews of those likely to be affected. There is no indication given that the vast majority of those attemting to change orientation (however hard), will fail, as she had not actually see her book's theories tested out in practice when it was first published.
The proof is in the fruit.
Since her book was published, many ministries with good intentions took her suggestions on board and channeled those of homosexual orientation through the paths outlined. Some ministries (e.g. Courage UK) were honest enough to admit that after years of trying they had not seen any of the orientation change promised, and they dropped the program as it was only creating frustration for those involved. Other psycologists, such as Jeffry Ford, also pointed out the failings in Moberley's theories.
I am one of those who spent years closely following the theories espoused by Moberley. In those years my sexuality did not change, neither did it change for any of the hundreds of others I met in such ministries. At most, it resulted in repressed homosexuals, more akin to asexuals.
These theories have now been tried and found wanting. The likelihood of change is now widely accepted to be exceedingly small - the reprints of this book should note this fact on the cover so that others are not misled.
If this affects you, read wisely and read widely to discover the real truth. This book is not the place to begin.
IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING.......2004-10-16
I am a Christian who has formerly had a homosexual relationship after years of struggling with homosexual desires (as a Christian). The question I wrestled with and every one who has struggled with homosexuality wrestles with is "Why do I have these feelings?" Elizabeth Moberly's book answers this question. The most healing thing in this book is that she says that the homosexual drive is a legitimate drive and is one that a man or woman does not choose for him or herself, but it is a desire that stems from dysfunction in child-parent relationships. This desire to be properly loved and raised by the same sex parent is absent or lacking; consequently, this legitimate need, if it is not met, becomes sexualized in same sex attractions for some people. I can only speak for myself, but in my case, this is exactly what happened to me. (Again, I was a born-again Christian when I was struggling with homosexuality, and my parents were also evangelical Christians -clergy even). Granted, my general sin nature and exposure to living in a pro-gay culture didn't help either, but it was only when I came to understand the child-parent connection to my homosexual drive and allowed God to meet these legitimate needs for love that I have been freed from these desires. There is freedom. There is healing. Don't believe the lie that there isn't. But it isn't easy. It doesn't happen in one day. It takes time - and failure. It requires great courage and the willingness to trust God to meet your needs. It may be the hardest thing you ever do, for like any sin, if we do not depend on God, we can always fall back into the sin in the same way a former alcoholic can go back to the bottle or someone who has repented of an extra-marital affair can be tempted to engage in another. For those of you who are parents: get this book. I do not condemn my parents; instead, I have learned to forgive them and to understand their own needs and issues. We are all in this together. Finally, I trust that as I pray for a Christian spouse, God will provide. Don't give up on the God who made man and woman to be "one" Don't give up on what you know to be true. This book will help you on your journey.
Emotionally Abusive.......2004-02-16
This book posits the idea that gays are such because they failed to bond with their same sex prior to puberty -- with the load of blame heaped on the same-sex parent. Whether this is the cause of homosexuality is not my concern. This book invalidates homosexuals as if there were something wrong with being gay. Moberley says that later-life bonding with the same sex (platonically) can change one spontaneously into a heterosexual.
I find her concepts to be emotionally abusive because she wants to rewrite the personalities of homosexuals, as if they had a mental disorder. Her treatment methods are immoral. If you are a gay who is conflicted, get some professional therapy to help you discover and accept yourself rather than being tortured by religious bigotry like this.

Book Description
Compare worldwide religious regulations involving gay sex and masculinity!
Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods: An Exploration into the Religious Significance of Male Homosexuality in World Perspective is an eye-opening look at the traditions of particular religions and their edicts concerning gay sex. This book examines the origins of holy directives involving homosexualitywhether forbidden, tolerated, or mandatoryand establishes a link between theology, sex roles, and the sensitive issue of masculinity. This text draws a parallel between homosexuality and the idea of religion, suggesting that gay rights can be understood as a freedom of religion issue.
While most readers are familiar with the traditional Islamic, Christian, and Hebrew prohibitions against sex between two males, this book also reveals other historic religions from around the world that neither opposed nor looked down on homosexuality. Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods argues that masculinity is the universal theme that formed historical interpretationwarriors and men of high status could not be sexually receptive or "feminine" and still be called "men." This intriguing text shows how the modern homophile movements are in effect redefining masculinity to obliterate the stigma of being a sexually receptive man.
Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods examines the significance of homosexuality in such religions as:
the Sambians of New Guinea
the Taoists of Ancient China
Plato and the later Stoics
Islamic Sufism
Native American culture
Hebrew Scriptures
early Christianity
Buddhism
Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods is an enlightening book that honors homosexual claims to moral integrity and appreciates religion and religious figures without rancor. Easy-to-read and free of technical language, this volume is for anyone who has an academic, professional, or personal interest in theology and homosexuality.

Pathetically Weak on Argument - Empty Assertions .......2005-04-11
Bought this book hoping for a properly constructed thesis, very disappointing. If you don't subscribe to his thesis to begin with that the world is agin men being receptive like women, and that religions that disdain homosexuality are in fear of losing their patriarchal structure; ie. receptive male intercourse undermines male hierarchy and confuses sexual roles - well if you don't accept this to start with you won't after reading this book.
It would be good to read a proper logical argument instead of frantic efforts to heap sand into ramparts before the tide of critical opinion comes in and washes these soluble ramparts away; but I have not yet found it, and this book doesn't either.
It is actually quite pathetic, there is an absence of hard logic or reasoned fact. Men may well engage in same-sex relations because it pleasures them, or for some dysfunctional reason; it is the hedonism that offends religion, not the feminist line about threats to male hierarchy...............then again Dr Long can hardly use "penis envy" as a rationale but otherwise he re-hashes feminist jargon to pose some great threat to male family structures if one of them decides to bend over and be receptive to male advances.
It is like tackling a souffle; the book has no coherent argument and merely reinforces existing prejudices; if you want to believe this nonsensical thesis you will enjoy the book provided you are not given to rational thought; otherwise you will feel you have just read some flaccid prose in a third-rate magazine.............maybe you have !
A Must Read on the Whole "Bible-Homo" Question.......2004-10-08
Professor Long provides a much needed and long awaited treatment of homosexuality in religious perspectives. His focus on the issues of "gender-threat" and its relation to why some religions are antagonistic to male homosexuality is right on target. He combines his knowledge of religious traditions with a cultural eye that gives the reader tremendous insight. I devoured this book, as should anyone interested in the whole "bible-homo" question.
Book Description
What roles do queer and transgender people play in the African diasporic religions? Queering Creole Spiritual Traditions: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Participation in African-Inspired Traditions in the Americas is a groundbreaking scholarly exploration of this long-neglected subject. It offers clear insight into the complex dynamics of gender and sexual orientation, humans and deities, and race and ethnicity, within these richly nuanced spiritual practices.
Queering Creole Spiritual Traditions explores the ways in which gender complexity and same-sex intimacy are integral to the primary beliefs and practices of these faiths. It begins with a comprehensive overview of Vodou, Santeria, and other African-based religions. The second section includes extensive, revealing interviews with practitioners who offer insight into the intersection of their beliefs, their sexual orientation, and their gender identity. Finally, it provides a powerful analysis of the ways these traditions have inspired artists, musicians, and writers such as Audre Lorde, as well as informative interviews with the artists themselves.
In Queering Creole Spiritual Traditions, you will discover: how the presence of androgynous divinities affects both faith and practice in Vodou, Candomble, Santeria, and other Creole religions
how the phenomenon of possession or embodiment by a god or goddess may validate queer identity and nurture gender complexity
who practices the African-derived spiritual traditions, what they believe, and who their deities are
how these faiths have influenced the art and aesthetic traditions of the West
This landmark book opens a fascinating new world of thought and belief. The authors provide rigorous documentation and faultless scholarly method as well as personal experience and the testimony of believers. Queering Creole Spiritual Traditions sheds new light on two widely different fields: LGBT studies and the theology of the African diaspora. A thorough bibliography points the way to further study, and an extensive photograph gallery provides a unique look at the believers and their practices. Every library with holdings in queer theory, African mythology, or sociology of religion should have this landmark volume.
