The Sermon on the Mount--now passing its 65th birthday--remains a vital and provocative introduction to the ideas at the heart of Christian Science. At heart it means to be entirely practical, as the "Science" of the name would indicate. Denying any interest in theology (there is no theology in the Bible, Fox argues), the author instead suggests that what Jesus was after was results: "Jesus explains to us what the nature of God is, and what our own nature is; tells us the meaning of life and of death; shows us why we make mistakes; why we yield to temptation; why we become sick, and impoverished, and old; and, most important of all, he tells us how all these evils may be overcome, and how we may bring health, happiness, and true prosperity into our lives."

And the Spiritual Key? Fox puts it quite simply: "The Truth turns out to be nothing less than the amazing but undeniable fact that the whole outer world--whether it be the physical body, the common things of life, the winds and the rain, the clouds, the earth itself--is amenable to man's thought, and that he has dominion over it when he knows it." --Doug Thorpe

Book Description

Fresh with contemporary relevance, this classic of positive thinking from one of the world's great motivational writers offers galvanizing insights on self-transformation. Based on Emmet Fox's simple message that "thoughts are things" and all potential lies in their creative and constructive use, these thirty-one inspiring essays how to have it all -- health, healing, happiness, and a liberated spirit -- through the power of constructive though. First published in 1940, Power Through Constructive Thinking has been a never-failing source of strength and renewal for generations of readers.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books. .......2007-10-10

My first copy I obtained through a friend in AA back in 1998. After having read this book, it was a turning point in my life. My life dramatically turned for the better. I appreciate Dr. Fox's insights on the Lord's Prayer and the Sermon on the Mount.

I am somewhat surprised based upon the negative reviews. Especially those who either explicitly or implicitly state they are in a 12 step program. I have been sober for 19 years and I found this to be an excellent book.

For me it chellenged my flawed view on God and God's Will. This book has motivated me to ernestly seek God's Will. For if God is boundless Love who is my true Father, then how could God's Will be anything but joyous and in my best interests.

I did not find this book challenging Christ's sacrifice on the cross for our sins. For me one of the best lessons learned from this book can be stated "As within, so without". I am ultimately responsibile for the conditions in my life. The conditions presently in my life are an outpicturing of what I hold in my heart. This follows Jesus's words that "every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit" (Matthew 7:17-18).

This book as well as Dr. Fox's other books have emphasized that the more of a conscious contact that I make with God so shall my conditions improve. For if I dwell and abide in God I can only experience the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

I pray that all those who read this book come to accept Christ as their saviour and find a relationship with God that results in an abundant life.

Warm regards,

Brendan

This book is easily one of the most important books I have ever read. I have been studying spirituality and metaphysical books for over 10 years and have read many books from some of the greatest teachers there are, but I have not found any that have had such an effect on my life and my family's as well.

Emmet Fox just slices through some of the most difficult texts (especially biblical ones) and speaks right to your heart. The truth of his words is so powerful that it brought me to tears. I have the first copy of this book that is almost completely worn out, but I buy several every year to give to friends and try to read it again yearly, as it really does continue to teach with every reading.

I purchased this book for a friend we have both read and feel empowered! Forget about the secret, this is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars An analysis of Jesus' famous sermon.......2007-05-27

Fox analyses the famous Sermon on the Mount. His observations are very detailed and his conclusions are inspiring. Jesus was never superfluous with his words on the sermon. Because of this every single word has a deep meaning and a reason for being. Emmet Fox attempts to give us that reason and in so doing lays out a way of life that is easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Spiritual Guide.......2007-05-21

This book is a gem for meeting life's struggles both externally and internally. The author is a Christian, I am not, but his words transcend religion and speak directly to faith in God and how to apply it to powerful affect.
He breaks down and defines the spiritual meaning (not necessarily the popular meaning) behind some of the greatest words Jesus ever spoke in his Sermon on the Mount. His honesty and faith shine through in every sentence. By the way, Mr. Fox doesn't waste a word pontificating or proselytizing. His objective is to articulately convey his personal and educated understanding of a faith that works, purposely setting no boundaries on belief. Powerful stuff.

"When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die." With these words, in The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave powerful voice to the millions of Christians who believe personal sacrifice is an essential component of faith. Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor and theologian, was an exemplar of sacrificial faith: he opposed the Nazis from the first and was eventually imprisoned in Buchenwald and hung by the Gestapo in 1945. The Cost of Discipleship, first published in German in 1937, was Bonhoeffer's answer to the questions, "What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us to-day?" Bonhoeffer's answers are rooted in Lutheran grace and derived from Christian scripture (almost a third of the book consists of an extended meditation on the Sermon on the Mount). The book builds to a stunning conclusion: its closing chapter, "The Image of Christ," describes the believer's spiritual life as participation in Christ's incarnation, with a rare and epigrammatic confidence: "Through fellowship and communion with the incarnate Lord," Bonhoeffer writes, "we recover our true humanity, and at the same time we are delivered from that individualism which is the consequence of sin, and retrieve our solidarity with the whole human race." --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

One of the most important theologians of the twentieth century illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus

What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." "Cheap grace," Bonhoeffer wrote, "is the grace we bestow on ourselves...grace without discipleship....Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know....It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."

The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

5 out of 5 stars A book to be read more than once.......2007-09-18

I have just finished reading "The Cost of Discipleship" for the third time. It seems I pick it up about once a decade. I found it as convicting this last time as I did the first time. If Bonhoeffer wrote this in the midst of a church culture that was making room for the rise of Nazism, it makes one wonder what lies ahead for our own culture. In an age in which so-called Christianity has grown progressively more self-centered - from the prosperity gospel to the free grace movement which requires no change in the individual - "The Cost of Discipleship" is a book that should be revisited often and thoroughly digested upon each visit.

5 out of 5 stars Hearty Spiritual Nourishment That Will Satisfy Your Soul. .......2007-09-02

There are not too many works that you can say, with the obvious exception of the Bible, that provide hearty spiritual nourishment that will satisfy your soul.

The Cost of Discipleship is one of those rare works of classical Christian writing that points the reader to what it means to be a true follower of Christ. I use the word "true" because in today's modern church the false doctines of "decisionism" and/or "acceptionism" have taken hold; meaning one "makes a decision to accept Jesus" or one "accepts Christ." But "from the beginning it was not so." Both Jesus and John the Baptist preached a doctrine of repentance.

This remarkable young Lutheran Pastor who was martyred during World War II makes a compelling statement of what the difference is between the "cheap grace" that is all too prevalent in so-called christendom and true Bible-based "costly-Grace." Bonhoeffer uses the term "costly" because Jesus Himself demands our all; "If any man will follow me, let him deny himself daily and follow me."

If you are looking for something that will nourish you to the very depths of your soul; if you are tired of the hype, the fluff, and the non-sense of today's seeker friendly gospel, then I urge you to get this book today and begin your quest to "earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints." You will not be sorry as Jesus more than satifies the hungry soul.

5 out of 5 stars ***WARNING! DO NOT READ THIS BOOK***.......2007-07-25

In a day and age, especially in America but even now around the globe, when elements of the church are preaching a prosperity gospel of "health and wealth," Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship serves as an excellent challenge, a warning and an encouragment all within this book.
Bonhoeffer challenges the church to not be contented in merely dispensing religious and spiritual activities as if it were handing out candy at a fair or carnival. Bonhoeffer warns against the type of preaching and teaching that is lukewarm and calls for no sacrifice or commitment. Bonhoeffer's words also serve as an encouragement to those within the church that are paying a price for their faith.
Interestingly, Bonhoeffer acknowledges that there will be an inequality in terms of the cost - for some it may mean even death, for others it may mean something less, but regardless, each one is asked to bear the cost that God gives them.
If the Christian life is a social network for you. If the Christian life is an obligation or tradition for you. If the Christian life is just the latest and greatest thing in your quest for spirtuality. Then, I would strongly warn you against reading this book because you will be struck with conviction. Each person that has read this book that I have known have seen dramatic change in the way they think, feel, experience, and live the Christian life...so be warned!

5 out of 5 stars Bonhoeffer tells it like it is........2007-05-21

In a time when we are constantly bombarded with the idea that being a Christian means telling others how to live and living warrior ideals for our beliefs, a true hero of the Christian faith shows us that it's not that easy. Living for Christ means really loving our neighbors, and we don't get to say that those bad folks aren't our neighbors.

This book is not easy to read. It's difficult, not just to take in (although you may sometimes need to read a paragraph two or three times to really comprehend its meaning), but to accept, because it's hard to imagine who can really live up to what Bonhoeffer shows us Christ is really asking of us. Nevertheless, I recommend making the effort in both areas.

Book Description

One of Christianity Today's 2003 Books of the Year!In this masterful and innovative book Glen H. Stassen and David P. Gushee join profound ethical reflection with faith in Jesus Christ, a life of discipleship and the hope of the present and coming kingdom of God. The result is a challenging, comprehensive treatment of Christian ethics centered on the life and teachings of Jesus.Drawing on detailed studies of the Sermon on the Mount, Stassen and Gushee shed light on the whole of biblical ethical teaching as it relates to a wide range of issues, including peacemaking, just war, nonviolence, sexuality and gender roles, marriage and divorce, race, economics, care of creation, prayer and politics.Their work yields neither an impossible idealism, nor an abstract ethical system, nor a generic religious legalism. Rather Stassen and Gushee set forth a holistic ethic that motivates us and provides us with a practical basis for living under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

2 out of 5 stars Kingdom Ethics.......2003-09-18

I was highly anticipating this book but when I received it I became disappointed. Based on reviews and recommendations, I was hoping to find an exposition of Christ's teachings, i.e. the Sermon on the Mount, with the Older Testament scriptures as a back drop and context for His words. Unfortunately, what I found was an antithesis rather than continuity between Christ and the New Testament Scriptures over against the Older Testament Scriptures. One example of this is where the authors are [basically] saying that Christ and the New Testament abolished the penalty for capital crimes, i.e., the death penalty for murder. The book states that Genesis 9:6 is more than likely a proverb. They state that the New Testament only refers to the death penalty in a negative way, i.e., its abuse and misuse and therefore has been abolished. Since when did man's abuse of any portion of God's law make that portion of the law null and void? It is my understanding that only God has the authority to make void any portion of His law. I don't understand how the authors reasoned from scripture to come up with such a conclusion and I would disagree strongly with it. I admit I did not read the entire book but after sampling just a small portion and finding what I consider a poor hermeneutic and exegesis on such an important ethical issue that is clearly taught in the scripture to be continual and binding on all people and nations, I lost confidence and interest and sent it back for a refund from the seller. It is too bad so many writers, readers, etc. pit the first 39 books of the Bible against the last 27 resulting in neo-nomianism (at best) to anti-nomianism (at worst). I would recommend Kenneth L. Gentry, Jr.'s book: God's Law in the Modern World. It honors God's law and teaches God's law is for modern man and continually binding unless otherwise clearly nullfied by God himself through additional revelation. After all, it is His Law and Word and is not to be added to or taken away.

5 out of 5 stars From the WESTERN RECORDER.......2003-04-05

"The church confesses that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah...God incarnate...the Savior...Lord of the Church and of the world...center not only of the Christian faith, but also...of the universe itself... Here is the problem. Christian churches across the theological and confessional spectrum...are often guilty of evading Jesus, the cornerstone and center of the Christian faith."
With those words, Glen Stassen, professor of Christian Ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary, and David Gushee, professor of Moral Philosophy at Union University challenge us to reflect on and reform the way we live as disciples of Jesus Christ. Kingdom Ethics is not a light, how-to approach to making moral decisions. It is a serious look at how the church in general, and Christians specifically, have ignored significant parts of the Gospel in our leap from Jesus' birth to his death and resurrection. Beyond diagnosis of that problem, Stassen and Gushee invite us to reflect on the way we make and discuss moral decisions and to examine a pattern that follows Jesus' moral discourse.
The first third of the book deals with a method and approach to Christian ethics based within Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom of God. More specifically, they ask us to focus on the Sermon on the Mount for both content and pattern of Christian moral reflection. The last two-thirds of the book applies this method to contemporary issues.
I found their critique of contemporary Christian moral reasoning insightful and sadly true. Yet, Stassen and Gushee not only show us how we got to a place where we ignore our primary source for living, but they offer us a way out. Kingdom Ethics is not an easy read; not because the authors have written badly, but because they challenge us to use our minds and do the hard work of Biblical and contextual interpretation. Nevertheless, no one who takes seriously the task of Christian spiritual formation should bypass this book.

I knew when I ordered this study I would be facing a great spiritual challenge and I am. As a christian I know of the Sermon of the Mount and it's great blessing but this study digs very deep and very deep into my walk with Jesus. It was a painful journey at first and very humbling, even unto tears, but there is great joy in these beatitudes that I had been missing. If you want the "truth" about God and your heart, then prepare yourself for a great study!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Author.......2002-02-16

Kay Arthur is an amazing author that is truely blessed by God. Having grown up in a home that didn't have God and was completely in the ways of the world, I discovered I need to do a lot of changing once I became a Christian and this book has totally helped me to not only discover the changes I need to make, but the scriptures I need to read to help me make the changes. I have since bought several more or her Bible Studies and cannot wait to get into them.

5 out of 5 stars A very must to go with your bible, moving, motivating........1999-07-08

I am a new christian and find this book speaks to me through the writer's words. I am finding myself anxious each day for the time to draw near to God through this author's words. I have never read any of her other books. I find this book makes me look at my life like I have never looked at it before. It makes me look at God as I have never dreamed possible. I am ordering 15 copies of this book and we are going to have a 9 week devotional on character at my church on Tuesday nights. I have showed it to other members of my church (only 98)and all interested will be taking the class with me. Whether you are now a christian or just became a christian I think most all would feel the same way after reading only the first chapture. You can not get enough of it.

This book has changed the way I now study the bible. When someone else is reading/teaching out of the bible, I am much more aware of the full understanding and I want to study it in an inductive way. I have never read the bible or studied references like I do now: since reading this book.

This book is second to none when it comes to challenging you in your spiritual growth. I was really put to the test on do I live what I believe. Kay does a fabulous job with teaching you what is means to live a Godly life

5 out of 5 stars Much Better than Average.......2006-03-06

This is one of the Lifeguide Bible Studies, which is generally a good small group study series. My former Sunday School class liked the Lifeguide format and consequently used many of the guides. So I have first-hand experience, in an actual classroom setting, using many of the books in this series.

I say all that to say this: This particular guide is the best, in my opinion, in this series. There are a couple of reasons for that. Some of the questions in these guides tend to be more subjectively focused on how you might feel about a particular passage or statement. The questions in this guide are more objectively focused on the actual text. The other reason is because the guide closely follows Stott's full-length book on this passage, which is also excellent (but that's another review).

All of that makes this a much better than average small group study guide.

Book Description

In Living the Sermon on the Mount, theologian and award-winning author Glen H. Stassen helps us to see that the revolutionary ideas in the Sermon on the Mount about loving and caring for each other, living in peace, and acting justly are not unattainable ideals but a recipe for wholeness and healing in our human relationships and deliverance from the vicious cycles that we get stuck in.

1 out of 5 stars Not up to expectations.......2007-05-31

Maybe it's me, but found this book mediocre despite rave review in Christianity Today that prompted my purchase. Seems author approached subject with pre-conceived ideas and then went in search of supporting material. Analogous to "shooting first and drawing the target later." Somewhat conversational and rambling in writing approach as I found many sections difficult to put in outline format. Lack of footnotes on controverial statements left something to be desired. This book is in my recycling bin, not my library.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Approach to the "Sermon on the Mount".......2007-01-11

The author provides the reader with two very important tools: First, an understanding that the Sermon on the Mount is not a moral code or legal requirements for those who follow Christ, but is rather a portrait of those who have experience 'new life' in Christ and as John 15 indicates "abide" in Him. Second, a method by which Matthew 5-7 can come alive in individual or small group study that focuses on "living" the truth found in Jesus' words on the "mountain". It is an excellent grasp of the material and presented clearly with appropriate commentary and illustrations.

Book Description

"The followers of Jesus are to different," writes John Stott, "different from both the nominal church and the secular world, different from both the religious and the irreligious. The Sermon on the Mount is the most complete delineation anywhere in the New Testament of the Christian counter-culture. Here is a Christian value-system, ethical standard, religious devotion, attitude to money, ambition, lifestyle and network of relationships--all of which are totally at variance with those in the non-Christian world. And this Christian counter-culture is the life of the kingdom of God, a fully human life indeed but lived out under the divine rule."In this careful exposition of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, John R. W. Stott accurately expounds the biblical text and relates it to life today. Above all, the author says, he wants to let Christ speak this sermon again, this time to the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy.......2007-09-13

I bought this on the advice of Jim Rosscup's book, Commentaries for Biblical Expositors. He is absolutrely correct in his assessment. This book is right up there with D. Martyn Lloyd Jones' works on the Sermon on the Mount. Very thought provoking. Well worth the money and the time to read! If I had only one book to buy on the subject, This would be the one.

5 out of 5 stars A New and Fresh Take on the Sermon.......2007-06-26

I'm not quite sure I've read such an in-depth study book as this one, let alone on the Sermon on the Mount. Stott writes with such vigor and authority that left me feeling he knew exactly what he was talking about, and it helped to put the perspective of the Sermon into more realistic, less difficult terms.
It made the Sermon a message that was new, even though we've all heard it before. Stott makes it seem that he wants all his readers to forget what we've learned about the Sermon, and read it and hear it as if for the very first time.
Though I'm not too big on Bible study books, and I looked around quite a bit before finding this one, Stott's study definitely helped me to look at Jesus' Sermon on the Mount with a fresh and energetic perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Theological Orthodoxy Coupled with Good Sense and a Broad Scope.......2007-04-17

John R. W. Stott, The Message of the Sermon on the Mount. Christian Counter-Culture. Leicester/England and Downers Grove, Illinois: InterVarsity Press. First edition 1978; regularly reprinted in this format since 1984. 238 pages.

Although this book is, in the meantime, almost 30 years old, it remains as timeless as the Bible chapters on which it is commenting - and as a reminder of what a tremendous gift John Stott has been to the church in his role as teacher and author. His "Message of the Sermon on the Mount" has a number of characteristics which make it more or less ideal as a guide through three of the New Testament's most fascinating, but also most difficult chapters. The first of these characteristics is its intellectual plausibility and good sense: Stott nowhere speculates, never goes off at a tangent, but always gives a thorough, intelligent, well thought-out explanation of the text that takes account of opposing views but counters these with irrefutable arguments. The second characteristic is its theological orthodoxy, coupled however with broadness of scope, awareness of other positions and honesty in the face of difficulties. Stott is never dogmatically narrow-minded, but always loyal not only to the ipsa verba, but to the very spirit of the Biblical text - something that should warm every Christian's heart. A third characteristic is Stott's familiarity with the literature and his adeptness in providing apt quotes at just the right moment. And he does not limit himself here to other commentaries or to parallel Bible verses; there is a liberal sprinkling of pithy comment from Augustine and Chrysostom from the early church period, from the great reformers Luther and Calvin, and from more modern theologians and thinkers of various schools, e. g. Joachim Jeremias, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, A. B. Bruce, Alfred Plummer, even C. S. Lewis. And of course, Stott has read and digested Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones's massive volume of sermons on Matthew 5 thru 7 Studies in the Sermon on the Mount. A fourth characteristic would be Stott's balance between the more "evangelistic" type of approach and the social aspects of the Christian faith. And a fifth characteristic would be his insistence on the supremacy and sovereignty of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and only Saviour.

If you are looking for a book of "manageable" size on the Sermon on the Mount, and assuming you require a volume which is really faithful to the words of the text, you could do no better than turn to Stott's classic exposition. This is one of the absolute highlights of the "The Bible Speaks Today" series (which, in itself, has proved, in my opinion, rather uneven).

5 out of 5 stars Very practical exposition of the Sermon.......2006-09-28

I am preaching through the beatitudes right now, and next year, I plan on preaching through the rest of the Sermon on the Mount. I already had all the heavy duty technical books on this section of the Bible. So I really needed a book where the writer explained the text in a way that people could understand it.

Stott's book fills that void. He masterfully explains and applies the text to life, and he always gives you something to chew on in digestible form. In addition to owning one or two technical commentaries on Matthew, I recommend picking up this little book if you are preaching or studying Matthew 5-7.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Treatment.......2006-06-02

Stott almost always combines scholarship of a high order with practial/pastoral application. This is one of those books. I have had this book for a number of years, and it is a helpful resource for understanding aht applying the Sermon. I have it on a par with Lloyd-Jones, but Stott is much more succinct. I also like D. A. Carson's treatment.

The concept of Christians as a counter culture - a concept a bit dated in these days of churches that surf culture - is important. There ought to be a difference, and it ought to be based on "what did Jesus teach."

This book changed my life. Emmet Fox is a superb writer and teacher. In a time when I had so many questions, this book made perfect sense and answered many of them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful interpretation.......2006-02-12

Possibly the best I've ever read. Timely, comforting, easy to understand interpretation of Jesus' most inspired teaching. I never understood the Sermon on the Mount until I read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Sermon on The Mount.......2005-10-25

The teachings of Jesus Christ, elucidated by the wonderful biblical scholar Emmet Fox is a must read for Christians or those who are interested in Jesus message undistorted by modern dogmatic religeons. Without accurate historical and linguistic interpretation I was unable to properly appreciate what Jesus was actually telling us in the Sermonon the Mount. At the end of the book Fox explains what Jesus intended in the Lords Prayer. I advise anyone interested in understanding the teachings of the Master to own this book.

5 out of 5 stars A little book on success and correct way of praying.......2005-02-06

This is the most wonderful interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount I have yet found. I have read this small book many years ago, but its words have become engraved on my mind and in my heart and it has had a profound impact upon my life.

It deals with spiritual truths, which many people recite through prayer daily, but don't give it much thought. This little book points out in a very clear way, all the elements of not only praying in a way that the prayers are answered, but of creating a successful life - and developing attitude, character and consciousness that brings about that success.

This book has in its own way changed the way I looked upon my relationship with God and my relationship with abundance and one's "daily bread". It has also kept me aware that if one desires to open the way, before the person even begins to pray, the person first needs to cleanse his mind and heart, and forgive anyone toward whom he holds any form of unforgiveness (including himself).
