Book Description
Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book is certain to become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels.
Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook.
For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.

Improved Graphics.......2007-08-29
The Deadman text is required by most TCM schools. If you have the previous version and already know your points this version might not be needed, you can always get the new CD when it comes out. If you are still learning then the illustrations are improved, making it easier to locate the exact location of a point.
There have been some corrections made to known errors in the previous edition.
Other than that the biggest difference is that the cover is now orange instead of black.
Necessary for any practitioner.......2007-08-06
I teach at a college of Oriental medicine where this book has become the primary text in acupuncture point location. It is very useful for learning functions and inter-relations among meridians and points. If this book had been available when I was first studying, my learning curve would not have been so steep. Although both CAM and the Shanghai texts have more information on theory, diagnostics, and treatment, A Manual of Acupuncture brings a focus to point location that is lacking in other works. In the clinic, this text continues to be a primary reference; my partner has essentially worn her book out. I feel that Deadman's text is a necessary primary reference for any practitioner. Look elsewhere for deep exposition of meridian theory; look here for application in practice.
One of the bibles of TCM.......2007-03-01
Concise, yes. However, "combinations" and "indications" should definitely be taken with a grain of salt.
Practitioners must take in affect aspects of the wuxing, sanjiao energetics, the liuqi, weather, season, jingshen, etc... before properly diagnosing and then treating.
acupuncture = not a cookbook modality of medicine
First Point Location Experience.......2007-02-18
This is a required book for my Master's in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. I have only one point location book to compare it to (CAM). I find the Deadman to be very clear and concise. It is easy to read, easy to locate info in the book and the diagrams are very clear and easy to understand as well. I do recommend this book.
Great text.......2007-01-11
Its required for my studies but I do think it is a very clear easy to use text book. The Deadman cards are realy helpful for studying as well-nice to have a portable way to study points.

Mediocre at best.......2007-09-05
I was very disappointed with this book. It has little to do with Cormyr. Even if you're focused on setting a game in Cormyr you can skip purchasing this book. You'll get nothing in the way of useful source material. The adventure has one or two interesting parts, but you can definitely do better by writing your own. This book also seems to focus on a new style that comes off as focusing more on the fights than the story. I found important information scattered about the book and it was often difficult to make it fit together.
A good product from wizards of the coast.......2007-07-13
Wizards of the Coast has been known to drown the public with crappy products just in the hopes of us buying it before we realize its crap, but this was far better then could have been expected. It is well layed out and easy to follow. The story actually makes sense and grabs the players. If you like Dungeons and Dragons and play in the forgotten Realms then I highly recommend this product. Even if you don't it provides some great ideas for any home run campaigns.
Not a true Supplement.......2007-07-13
I was dissapointed when I first read throught this book to find that it is mislabeled as a Supplement when it is in fact an Adventure Module. I am running a campaign in the Cormyr region so I was desperate to find the fine detailed facts that only a true supplement can provide. The adventure looks fun but I am a little afraid to run it because my players read it.
It does have some supplemental information about one city in Corymr. Just not enough of what I was looking for. I ended up turning to a Volo's guide.
Play before you rip..........2007-07-02
I have now played through this entire adventure as the DM. The reason I bought it in the first place is that I love the Forgotten Realms and am a college student, so no time to write my own. I have heard many people say that it is underwhelming or not enough new material. Let me say this...So what. It is beautifully written by 5 amazing authors who all contributed to the design of the story. If you constantly follow the Forgotten Realms story, this adventure and the 2 follow-ups will fit in nice between the events of certain novels. Also, the encounters are challenging, very customizable, and quite suitable for any play group.
As I said before, I have finished this adventure with 1 play group and am halfway with another. If you want new stuff, write it yourself or add any of the hundreds of items and classes other FR books add. I personally went and rewrote many of the major NPCs stat blocks using Champions of Ruin and Lost Empires.
Finally, remember that the story in the adventure is incomplete. To the players, they will feel like they have survived (or not survived...3 or 4 times in my party's case) something huge. My players absolutly clammored for more and the second book in the series releases later this month.
If you like the F.R. and need a precon adventure, look no further.
All it's cracked up to be!.......2007-05-30
Good product. As always with WotC, retail price is steep but this one is worth it - especially if you are a fan of Faerun.
Well done, deep plot, good illustrations - all in all, nice installment in this super campaign.

best concise O.R. reference.......2007-05-21
this book is the best concise operating room anesthesia reference available.
anything bigger would be too large, it is not designed to teach but more to remind.
Consummate pocket reference.......2007-05-12
Anyone involved in anesthesia generally recognizes the Mass Gen. as the best pocket reference out there. This new edition is no different. When you need something fast b/c it has slipped your mind, this is the 'goto' book.

Book Description
An entirely new campaign setting for the
Dungeons & Dragons® roleplaying game.
During the spring and summer of 2002, Wizards of the Coast, Inc., put out a request to the gaming community for proposals for a new
D&D game setting. 11,000 proposals and two years of development later, the Eberron Campaign Setting is the result of that search. This brand-new setting for the
Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game is an avenue for any
D&D fan to experience swashbuckling adventure and explore mysterious new territories.
Designed to introduce a new, fresh world with unlimited possibilities for exploration, the Eberron Campaign Setting includes everything needed to develop characters and run campaigns in this exciting new arena. It includes new character races, monsters, prestige classes, feats, organizations, and equipment unique to the world, and it introduces a new base class to the
D&D game. It contains substantial information on new elements of magic, including spells, domains, items, artifacts, and more. Also included are historical and cultural details of the world, along with extensive illustrations and a wealth of maps that put the setting into vivid context. This title will also include both adventure hooks and a full adventure so that players and Dungeon Masters can immediately begin enjoying everything this rich new setting has to offer.

D & D noir.......2007-06-28
The Ebberon campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons game system brings players into a new world. This is no backwoods medieval period setting. This is technology married to magic, and twisting plots. this is a world where the "normal" rules no longer apply. I highly recomend this book for any Dungeons & Dragons fan who wants something truly new.
100% Awesome!.......2007-05-31
This is a great setting. It's very easy to get involved in Eberron, and there is just enough to play in such a vast world. The new races are very attractive and fun, and the personality of the world is very interesting. Since I play Eberron, adventures just got more fun. Of course, you don't need this material to take your players through amazing locations, jungles filled with ancient secrets and mysterious enemy lands, but this book will surly put you up to it.
Good book, but vague........2007-03-22
I run a D&D campaign set in Eberron, and of course this book is essential. It is very interesting, with a lot of good flavor material, and some decent additions to the rules (the new races are fun). One warning (this probably applies to all the Eberron source books): The backround information is very vague. Many things are hinted at, but rarely are they revealed in any detail. This is not neccesarily a bad thing. I like it because it releases me to invent whatever I want (without fear of contradiction by a player who has more time to study sourcebooks than me), and really make the setting my own. However, it is probably good to keep this in mind when you are considering buying this book.
Eberron is not The Forgotten Realms. You will not find reams of material on every obscure location and character.
The style of Eberron suits me very well, as it is quite conducive to plot oriented campaigns.
As for the book itself, it is well made and sturdy. Not a lot of typos, the illustrations are pretty good, better than a lot of Wizards books, but still a little inconsistent.
Incredible Source Book!.......2007-03-08
Possibly the most imaginative Campaign Settings in the history. There's so much detail, yet it's open-ended enough for literally anyone who's new to the role of DM to put something together. Awesome work by Keith Baker et al.
Awesome book, a must have in D&D campain.......2006-11-24
There is so many details that you just can't stop reading. I recomend this book to anyone who does have D20 products.

Great book.......2007-09-09
This book is written with easy to understand directions. I am doing some home renovations and have been able to do most by myself with the help of this book.
It really is empowering!.......2007-04-08
I love my husband, but he's definitely not a Mr. Fixit kinda guy, so I used to have a handyman on speed dial. Every time I called him it would cost me at least $75, once it cost me $1,300! "Jane" is lot cheaper, plus I love that it's written by women--it's like having a really helpful girlfirend who believes tools aren't just for men and gives you the confidence to do it yourself.
Love This Book For Ease of Use!.......2007-03-09
The BE JANE Home Improverment book is great. Easy to get to the info you want, layed out well for easy reading, and clear instructions with great pictures to help guide you. I think this is the first home improvement book I've actually just sat down and read! This is a perfect book to get for a daughter or friend living on her own! I just bought one for my niece who just moved into her first "real" place!
Must have for the female DIYer.......2007-01-15
Heidi and Eden are two girls that know what they are talking about. The book is very well laid out and instructions are clear cut. I've been fans of these "Janes" for awhile so when I saw that they had a book, I had to be one of the first to get it. I'm very glad that I did. One of my favorite and most interesting projects in the book is changing the face of your appliances to stainless steel. I was planning on buying all brand new appliances until I learned that you could do it with stainless steel adhesive. These girls definitely rock! If you are a first time homeowner like me and short on money to pay a contractor, then this book is a must!
Great, inspirational book!.......2007-01-04
I really love the way the book is laid out. Very useful information combined with great photos and inspiration for why you should take on home improvement! This book makes home improvement approachable and is truly empowering as the title suggests.

A truly paradigm-shifting work.......2006-05-15
Ron Baker is doing for the professional services firms what Columbus and Pythagoras did for the "Earth is Flat" proponents! "Paradigm-shifting" has become so over-used in our culture, but it is not mere hyperbole when describing this book. The work is quite thorough, implementing excerpts, quotes, and philosophies from dozens of well-respected scholars, economists, and management consultants. The work reminds me a lot of Tom Peters' seminal book, "In Search of Excellence" in the way in which the author sprinkles in so many great examples from other successful organizations and industries. In addition, he has many real-world examples (from firms around the world) of professional services firms that have successfully tranformed their practices. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any professional who is trying to transform a professional services organization or who is wondering if there might be a more effective and profitable way to run a professional services firm.
The Essential Reference for Law Firm Leadership.......2006-02-08
I first read this book about 2 years ago. I keep it within arm's reach of my desk and refer to it often, still.
I've read one reviewer who stated that this book was the modern almanac of best business practices. I agree completely.
I run my own small law firm. We have implemented many of this book's practices with great success and profitablilty. Primary among them is fixed fee agreements. Yes, we are a law firm that has trashed its time sheets, due in large part to the inspiration and impetus of this book. And, we will never go back.
An earlier reviewer suggested that this book would be more useful for CPA's and not for lawyers. I disagree. Though I'm certain the message of this book is critical for CPA's, I think that any person in law firm leadership must read this book. I think it is particularly suited to small firms and solos who will have the ability to immediately take action in implementing these ideas and making them a reality in their practice.
However, if you are one of my competitors forget everything I said above and do not touch this book. My firm and my family will thank you.
Extremely helpful, well documented........2005-11-14
This is a very well-documented guide for any service firm. It's also very well written, very insightful and very well researched. It's real deep, complete and full of advice and wisdom from several great minds. I run a corporate reputation consulting firm in El Salvador and this is the most advice-rich book I've encountered in the last five years. I also recommend "the trusted advisor" by David Maister and specially "Managing the Profesional Service Firm" also by Maister.
Permission to Believe.......2004-12-14
The Firm of The Future coordinates both the theory and practical application of pricing concepts AND business service models in such a complelling manner that Baker & Dunn give Professional services organizations permission to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
While the Firm of The Future is geared to the legal and accounting professions the message and vision is applicable to Advertising agencies, Consulting Organizations, Marketing service firms and professional service providers of all shapes and sizes.
Cost plus pricing is short sighted and intellectually flawed. The intense pressure on increasing billable hours and driving down costs is destroying the creativity and core capabilities of Professional Service companies.Baker&Dunn explain the flaws of cost plus and hourly schemes and identify a road map which outlines how to move a professional services organization and it's customers to a healthier, happier, more productive and more mutually profitable business process
A great read---Inspirational and practical

Must reading for the professional service provider!.......2003-12-04
After reading this book, you'll need to place it alongside your desktop dictionary, Thesaruas and Ron's first book "The Professional's Guide to Value Pricing. This is how strong of an impact their message has made on me.
After reading the first two editions of Ron's book, I didn't think he would be able to improve much on the message of switching to Value Pricing. Boy, was I wrong! He and Paul Dunn have done an amazing job of getting the reader to think differently. As with the radical theme of trashing the timesheet in "The Professional's Guide to Value Pricing", they do a masterful job of convincing you why the old "Revenue Equation" must be replaced with the forward-thinking "Profit Equation". They go on to introduce other new topics not found amongst professional services firms such as developing your Intellectual, Structural and Social Capital, emphasizing effectiveness over efficiency and of course Value Pricing. As is typical of Ron's writing style, and complemented by Paul, their reasoning for making this paradigm shift is well supported and well reasoned.
I've been using practicing Value Pricing for about 5 1/2 years now and I can tell you that it works. In my own firm, I've slowly begun implementing some of their new concepts but with a new perception. I'm convinced these principles will work for me and they can for you as well.
After reading this book, you'll definitely want to keep it handy as a useful reference guide!

Good resource for Eberron Players and DMs.......2007-05-19
For anyone interested in psionics canon in Eberron, I'd highly recommend this book. There are a lot of NPCs and political information as well as some weapons and feats that may prove useful. It seems a little bit of a throw-back to forgotten realms style regional modules.
Downsides for me was that the material was very vague or limited, geographically, but fairly detailed politically. For example, they'll spend a tiny paragraph for a whole region that is leaking chaos into Eberron in Adar and has a lot of fantasy potential, then spend 5 pages talking about a political group that really, after reading it, isn't very interesting or have clear goals or themes.
For crunch, the PrCs and quori-related stuff seems a little tame...a lot more flavor than bang. Enough of the artwork is mediocre to remove it from the list of strengths.
I think I would have liked the book to be...bigger. There is a lot of material to cover and a lot of it gets short treatment or no treatment at all, but still a good book especially if you are interested in non-Khorvaire Eberron, as I am.
Secrets of Sarlona.......2007-04-13
I think this is an excelent product. I like the ideas that the dreaming dark present as villians and this book expands on those ideas. Both in how they would be used, and how to use those who would oppose them. I also appricate the inclusion of new quori that can be used with empty vessels to make enlightened. Finally I am a huge fan of psionics and many rule books include very little additional material on psionics, so I am excited about the additional psionic content in Secrets of Sarlona.
Limited Use.......2007-03-27
It is a very good book if you are running a campaign in Eberron on, or at least heavily involving the continent of Sarlona. Other than that It has very little use.
A few new prestige classes, feats, and weapons are the most it offers.

Get's you going.......2007-08-08
I do a lot of local promotion in the detroit area and had borrowed this book from a friend a couple months ago and it was very helpful. It gave me a lot of great ideas how to promote one of our upcoming releases which did a lot better than the previous. The book is kinda inspiring too which is really helpful to keep you up beat and rocking the city about what you're doing.
Some good advice.......2006-12-21
This book gives some good advice but like the previous reviewer said it doesn't go into enough details. I would much prefer a book that would give more step by step instructions (I guess I am just a linear thinker). I also think there could have been more on internet marketing as that seems to be the best way to go these days.
All in all a good resource but you will probably need more than just this to really get going.
Not worth it.......2006-11-10
I was originally looking forward to the new ideas to promote myself when I purchased this book but many of these ideas have nothing to do with promotion so this book could have served a better service had it only had 100 ideas and gave a little more detail into each.
This Book Is A Must Own For Aspiring Musicians.......2006-11-04
If you are in a band or you're thinking of starting one, this is the book for you. However, if you're a songwriter/composer like myself, it mainly serves as a good resource to have for web site ideas and some marketing ideas. Most of the content in this book is in reference to bands and the needs of a band. Still, I highly recommend it to anyone that's looking to boost/add to their musical aspirations.
A MUST HAVE for all musicians!.......2006-07-10
Bob Baker is the guru of Music Marketing--the Business part of Music Business.
Too many musicians create a great cd and put on a great show but nothing ever becomes of them and they give up early--is this you?
And we all know of bands with minimal talent who have major success and make some major cash--and wonder why.
Bob Baker has the creative ideas to take your band from struggling to successful. Just one idea will pay the price of this book.
I have been helping with my own brother's musical career--and Bob's ideas are part of the reason that he is able to be a full time muscian and not work that boring job at the mall. Thanks Bob!

Sergers offer project possibilities beyond the capabilities of ordinary sewing machines, but they also seem to have more potential for malfunctioning. Help is at hand from a book filled with solutions and troubleshooting advice for all manner of serger troubles. Rather than present ideas for projects, this guide tells you how to identify and correct everything from irregular tension, faulty flatlocking, and skipped stitches to machine jams, needle breakage, and much more. The "Insider Insights" chapter covers troubleshooting for individual models and enables users to apply solutions to virtually any brand of serger. There are also tips on buying a serger and details on needles, threads, and accessories.

Ultimate Serger Answer Guide .......2006-03-10
My wife was a first time user of a serger that I bought her for Christmas (I know - great Christmas gift - but it was what she wanted!) - anyways, she tells me that this book is very helpful for providing a lot of useful hints past the basic instructions you get with a new serger - she would recommend it for anyone who usually needs just a little more hints tht a basic instruction guide provides
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-25
If you are new to serging or even experienced, you will find this book a valuable asset in your sewing library. I am new to serging and have found it to be a very helpful. Most owner/instruction manuals tell you how to thread and use your machine but don't get into a lot of detail about the actual how-to of serging or problem-solving. This book covers everything from needles to sewing with various types of threads to troubleshooting with lots of illustrations and photographs.
There is a reason why people buy sergers and never use them. Unlike sewing machines, sergers are a little more complicated and can be down right intimidating, so good reference books are a MUST! This book, along with "The New Singer Sewing With A Serger", have been very helpful to me. Sergers are great machines and reference books such as this will give you the confidence and ability to get through problems and master your serger.
great resources.......2005-10-08
This book really helped clear up a lot of questions regarding sergers and opened up great new possiblities! Not biased in its reviews of different brands!
Very informative book.......2005-08-24
This is a good book to have for a reference on your serger, has lots of info.
The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide - A must have.......2005-07-18
I received this book from Amazon only 3 days ago but it has proved invaluable. I recently purchased a serger for the first time and initially found it quite a challenge. However, the manual has helped somewhat but after reading this book (I bought two others as well including Serger Secrets which everyone recommends) I would highly recommend this Guide. It covers all the commonly found problems and questions that people ask about sergers. It also has very good diagrams including line drawings which are very helpful. It's very easy to read, to understand and to put ideas into action. The book also covers some of the main sergers and comments on how to manage individual problems on them.
All in all I couldn't recommend this book highly enough. After being concerned about making anything I sat down the next day and made a fleece pullover within about two hours. This book gave me the confidence to do that.

The Practical Stylist by Sheridan Baker.......2003-07-13
This is an excellent volume for teaching quality literary
criticism to collegiate-level students. In primary and secondary
school, the emphasis is on sentence construction.
i.e. A good sentence must have a subject, verb and an object.
Although students may learn the mechanics of writing, they
do not pick up the fine nuances in literary expression.
This work forces the student to develop a basic idea or
theme. Once developed, the point of view must be defended
persuasively. The thesis of the work should be contained
somewhere in the first paragraph. Sentences should be simple
and stated actively. Finally, each work should be developed
in successive drafts from the first to the final drafts.
I've found that students have a problem differentiating
literary criticism from a simple regurgitation of what they
read. The Practical Stylist helps to focus each student's
attention on enunciating criticism of a personal nature or
within the experiential domain of first-hand knowledge.
It's painful to learn to develop quality literary criticism
because the primary and secondary education simply does not
focus on this aspect in any meaningful depth.

Practical Says it All.......2000-12-28
I used (an earlier edition of) this book in an English composition class at the University of Kansas in the late 70's and have kept it with me ever since.
This book has so much to recommend it, it's hard to pick out one thing to emphasize, but the best advise I came away from the book with was Baker's admonition to give your writing the "Argumentative Edge." Like so many students, I found writing exceedingly painful: to sit down with a blank sheet of paper and begin writing inspired me not at all. I thought that I had to sound like Encyclopedia Britannica to write well.
Sheridan Baker slaps you around good to get that notion out of your head. To make your writing interesting (and as a bonus easier), he insists that your writing take a position, express an opinion, argue a point of view. Ditch "fairness" and objectivity--at least to get you started--and all of a sudden, writing becomes pleasurable.
I've never read this advice anywhere else (not even in Stunk and White), and it, along with many other jewels of wisdom have stuck with me for 20 years, making my writing life so much more fun than it otherwise would have been.
Goog work, Sheridan.
Best of It's Type.......2000-05-17
I first used this book in 1967 when I was aboard ship taking a course in Expository English offered by The Harvard-M.I.T. Commission on Extension Courses. It has everything one needs to know to become a clear, concise writer. Easy to understand and enjoyable. I used it for many years, then it was stolen. I have been looking for another copy ever since and was afraid it was out of print. I'm about to order my second copy.
Practices what it preaches, useful and well-written.......1999-04-06
I first encountered this book as an undergraduate in Australia in 1981. When I taught mathematics in Zimbabwe I gave my copy to the English Department. I have owned and given away (one stolen) several copies since. So I must think it's the best book in its genre.
