Teen's Review.......2007-06-07
I didn't like this book so much because American Girl has a tactful way of wording things. You'd think this is a good thing, but it's really not, becuase most of the book suggests being a good friend, but what if your friend is the one that's complicating things? If you have a specific relationship with a friend that's not working out, this book will help you out somewhat, but won't answer your specific concerns.
Great Friendship Advice.......2007-05-17
I bought this for my 8 year-old when she was having friendship issues with a girl she had been close to since kindergarten. She would come home crying every day because she was feeling left out of the group. We read this book together and found it helpful in dealing with her problem. It gave her so much good advice that I could see her confidence building and her fear quickly diminishing. She found the courage to talk to her friend and they are "hanging out" again. Thank you to American Girl for truly understanding a girl's heart.
This book is amazing!.......2007-05-13
My almost 8 year old daughter wanted to read books about becoming a "older girl" way too soon. The books I found, including the book from american girl "the care and keeping of you" was too advanced for her. Was I ever glad I found this book! We bought this book, the smart girls guide to manners, and beauty 101. These book DO NOT cover periods, bras boys etc but are written for the 7-10 year old girl. Perfect for my daughters age. THANK YOU AMERICAN GIRL!! You've included the girls in the "younger" set without giving them too much information for them to handle. This book deserves 10 stars!!
Wow again!.......2007-03-24
Another great American Girl book! I mean, it is pretty nice to be able to make up after a fight. This amazing and wonderfuly explicate book is definetly a book for me! I advise you to check it out!
Perfect book for me!!!.......2007-03-12
I think tihs book is great because it talks about how tweens should deal with bullies and unfriendly people. I read this book and realized that I could do something to stop being bullied. I think teens and preteens will make a change in their life. I loved this wonderful book and i hope you will too.

Not that great... :(.......2007-10-03
I got this book from the library, because even though I'm homeschooled, I was hoping it might give me tips on studying for tests doing homework, and other such things. The only thing in there I didn't really know before was how to place things in your backpack to make it not so heavy. And their schedule for getting ready in the morning was not bad either. Also, the "After School" section, gave you pretty good advice on tryouts and how much is too much activities. But being as to how that's just about two thirds of the book I'd say it's not worth your money. Also they make middle school sound scarier than I think it really is. For example, they said "Picture yourself having a good time in middle school." They make it sound like you're going to a different country! So overall, you might get it at the library, but I wouldn't buy it.
Smart Giirls Guide.......2007-10-03
My daughter started middle school this year and has read this book from cover to cover at least 5 times. She has always liked American Girl books and I don't have to worry about her reading inappropriate material. Highly recommend for any girl starting middle school.
Another American Girl Success.......2007-01-12
My daughter will be entering middle school next year. As far as books go, this one will help her more than any other I've seen. Every book in this series has been a hit and this one is no exception.
Not that helpful.......2007-01-02
My eleven year old daughter and i read it. It was not that helpful. Everything in there she already knew. I recomend it if you were homeschooled but otherwise it's not that great.
This Book Was So Great!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-27
This book was so great!!!! When I first got this book I didn't know squat, but ever since I got this book middle school doesn't seem that much scary to me anymore. So if your starting middle school then you should buy this book, also if you in 7th, 8th, and even beyond use this book for help throughout your school years!

All padding, no substance........2007-08-19
I just listened to this on audiobook and was very disappointed. For some reason (most likely to pad the tiny amount of actual information) they felt the need to couch the whole book in a ridiculous and lame cocktail party scenario. It was obviously intended to be funny but was just pathetic. Many questions had the answer of "gee, even doctors don't know that." Wow, thanks! Also, some were so obvious I don't know why they were included (does anyone really NOT know that poppy seeds cause a positive test for opiates because opium comes from poppies? Really?) If you love entertaining bits of info, read "Freakonomics" instead.
Mike Smith needs to lighten up.......2007-08-18
This book is funny, there are some silly questions we may have one time or another wondered about but never asked. Mike Smith seems to think we must be morons if read this book, but in fact the person that reads this book has a sense of humor and light heartedness and sense of wonder. This book is not intended to be an acedemic scholastic educational tool, it's intended for entertainmaint. Geeez Mike, lighten up!
Great gift idea.......2007-08-09
I purchased this for a friend of mine for his birthday. He's a bit of a brain, and I figured this would peak his intrest. Great value.
Typical.......2007-08-03
This book is fun for anyone who doesn't read these much. However, if you are a fan / collector of imponderables, this is one may be a little redundant of many you've read before. Goes on tangents and narratives a lot rather than addressing many questions directly.
Great fun to read.......2007-06-15
I love to read books with interesting facts like this book had. It did have the messenger transcripts between the two guys that kind of take away from the book and I felt were just put there as filler. The tidbits of info they put in this book was interesting, and I read through the book with breeze b/c I couldnt put it down. Id definitely tell others to read it, and have passed my copy around to some of my friends to browse through.

A good pictorial for the collector.......1998-04-13
Ms Martini, an avid and well known collector has tried to give us a book which is usable and friendly in the amount of color photos - however, there is a paucity of written information and this puts the reader at a loss for learning, further education and good comparisons of writing instruments. This is not a true learning tool but a good shopping guide. The publisher has turned out better books in varied areas so should try to provide a more thorough text in the future - Ms Martini has the skills, knowledge and collection she needs assistance in translation and more word space.

So much of the action in this courtroom thriller happens outside the jury's purview that it makes one wonder if there's a touch of irony intended in the title. Paul Madriani, the lawyer-hero of five previous Martini novels set in San Francisco, has moved to San Diego for reasons that are never made clear. He's taken on the case of David Crone, a doctor involved in mapping the human genome, who's been charged with the murder of his colleague, a young African American research physician whose ambitions threatened Crone's career.
Crone seems to have had ample motivation for killing Kalista Jordan: witnesses have testified to the friction between them, and Crone himself seems less concerned about the capital murder charge than about what may be going on in his lab. When a key witness for the prosecution dies in what looks like a suicide and leaves a note confessing to the murder, Crone is freed. And in an O. Henry-like twist in the last chapter, a most unlikely killer emerges and threatens Madriani's life.
But even this doesn't do much to enliven this slow-moving novel. There's very little tension on the page or in the plot, and neither the narrative nor the characters offer the reader the kind of excitement found in Martini's previous novels. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Lawyer Paul Madriani is called on to defend a brilliant research physician -- who just may be a killer -- in the most daunting capital case of Madriani's career.
Paul Madriani has ample reason to suspect he's representing a guilty man. Dr. David Crone, a respected medical researcher and principal in mapping the human genome, is charged with the murder of a young colleague: Kalista Jordan, an African-American research physician whose dismembered body was found in a nearby bay.
Madriani's defense is hindered by the secrecy surrounding Crone's research -- which has involved his controversial use of genetic racial profiling. The murdered woman had filed charges of sexual harassment against Crone. Paul is left to piece together a defense while Crone and his colleagues conceal parts of the puzzle.
When a key witness for the prosecution ends up dead, Crone's acquittal is all but assured. Paul's nagging doubts concerning his client are answered with a stunning revelation and a shattering climax.

True to Form, Things are Never What they Seem.......2006-06-27
This is the fifth in the Paul Madriani series by Martini, and it takes a new venue in San Diego. Paul, and Henry, are defending a professor from the local college who is accused of murdering one of his colleagues. Paul has worked with the doctor in trying to help the daughter of a friend of his that has Huntington's Disease (same as Woody Guthrie).
One of the problems that they have with Dr. Crone is that he is a true academic, and looks at both sides of every argument. When asked what he is working on, he is evasive and states that it's protected under trade secrets. It has something to do with genetics, molecular engineering and nanorobots. Just your run-of-the mill kind of stuff.
To complicate matters just a little more, the dead woman was an african-american, who had accused Dr. Crone of sexual harrassment. It also turns out that twenty-five years ago, her mother was part of a group that accused Dr. Crone of racially motivated genetics testing. Then a second researcher (also Black) turns up dead, a supposed suicide.
Of course there is a lot of evidence that points to Madriani's client and it doesn't look good for him. The climax is totally unexpected, but the epilogue is a little to pollyanna for my taste.
All in all a good outing.
The Jury.......2006-01-03
A disapointing read. Story starts out slow and continues slow and doesn't get good until almost the end of the book. Not one of his best. "The List" would have to be his best to date.
Good book makes you think.......2004-11-15
This is a great book. Martini, writing in the first person through his attorney narrator, Paul Madriani, is engaging and colloquial. Paul is a likable person, even though he is an attorney, and so is his sidekick, Harry Hinds. In fact, there really are not any despicable people here in this novel, and that is what is so great, for a novel. Most novels have to ride on the back of some villain. Martini has not done that. There are no real villains in this story.
The perpetrator is a sick man, but he is not evil. In fact, he is an artist, of a sort, a carpentry artist. That is somewhat unusual, too, because usually artists are intropunitive, like Van Gogh (cutting off his own ear, and all that), not extropunitive and murderous, blaming others for their problems. It makes you think.
Anyway, Frank Boyd, the killer in question, is not evil. He is deeply troubled, by the life-threatening illness of his own daughter. Who can't relate to this paternal love?
There are no villainous people here. Tannery, the prosecutor, and his boss, Tate, the head D.A., are somewhat misguided in their goals and objectives, and that's where the real conflict comes into Martini's story. Tannery is prosecuting the wrong man, and is doing so for what appear to be partially self-serving reasons, to further his own career.
Martini has done a lot with a little here, and he therein shows himself to be above the rest of the crowd of novelists, but about at the same level as some of his attorney-novelist cohorts. Attorneys do seem to make good novelists, now that they have seen fit to pass through that gate, following Grisham, Turow, et al.
I highly recommend this book. You'll enjoy it and learn some things at the same time (for instance, what is molecular computing?).
Diximus.
Anthony I. Miller Place, NY.......2004-11-10
This book was a very good brain teaser. It had many twists and turns. The book story begins with the murder of Kalista Jordan, a twenty-six year old research physsician and collegue. Dr. David Crone is Kalista Jordans coworker and is suspected to be the one that killed Kalista. Kalista had filed a sexual harassment charge against Crone after she stole some of research papers out of his office. The two were then seen arguing publicly with each other before she was found washed up on a beach dead. There was heavy evidence against Dr. Crone, such as items in his garbage that were linked to the murder. On top of all this Dr. Crone refuses to cooperat with his own defense. He refuses to give Madriani, his lawyer, valuable information that could help him to win the case. Dr. Crone will not discuss the research that he was working on. He also will not say what role Kalista had in his research. The only reason Mr. Madriani was defending Dr. Crone was because he was the only doctor that would help his daughters friend, Penny Boyd. She was suffering from a disease called Huntington Chorea. This was a rare hereditary disease attacks the brain and central nervous system. This is a very fatal disease. Dr. Crone was attempting to get Penny into a special drug trial program when he was arrested for the murder.
I enjoyed this book very much. This book captured me in a way no other book has done before. I looked forward to reading it everyday. I highly recommend this book to someone who enjoys problem solving and law. This book made me realize that just because someone has a lot of evidence against them doesn't mean they did it.
A Depressing Read: The Jury by Steve Martini.......2004-02-15
Overall, I have liked the Paul Madriani books for the most part, but this one becomes more depressing with every page. This is one that I personally could have done without.
As the novel opens, Madriani is attempting to defend Dr. David Crone, a highly respected genetic researcher from murder charges. He is charged with killing coworker Kalista Jordan, a twenty six year old research physician and colleague, who worked under him at the lab funded by the local university. Kalista was skilled at office politics and played hard. She had filed a sexual harassment claim against him after stealing some of his research papers. He wanted them back and she wanted more funding for her portion of the project. After being seen publicly arguing with her, her dismembered body washes up out of the ocean. Not only does he seem to have motive for killing her, Forensics links items in his garage to the killing.
With such evidence against him, Dr. Crone won't cooperate with his own defense. Many avenues of investigation remain closed, as Dr. Crone won't discuss the highly technical research he was working on or what Kalista's role in the research was. All he knows is that it was something at the forefront of genetics research and implications could be staggering. Madriani becomes increasingly frustrated as the case goes against him and the Doctor remains oblivious to the situation.
The only reason he is defending the Doctor is that the Doctor was the only person helping the ill friend of his daughter. Penny Boyd has Huntington Chorea, a rare hereditary disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system. Over time, it destroys brain tissue, causes the loss of the ability to control the muscles and finally, death. While it rarely attacks children, Penny has it and is wasting away before her family and Madriani's eyes. Madriani tried everyone and everything to help her and the only one that helped in anyway, was Dr. Crone. As part of his research, Dr. Crone was trying to get Penny into a drug trial program when he was arrested for murder. Now on leave from the university, and removed from heading the program, his life is at stake as well as Penny's.
I admit that my review maybe somewhat biased against this book. After dealing with a lifetime of my own children's medical problems, I don't really want to read something about terminally ill children. While this book is well written and the characters are interesting, I found the illness of a child terribly upsetting. While there are no easy answers in life, one of the reasons I read is to escape reality, and to the last depressing page, there was no escape. Considering the ultimate subject matter, this is not a book I would recommend lightly to any parent.

Helps even us backwater yokels drink like sophisticats.......2006-03-07
I have enjoyed the whole "littloe black book..." series, but there the best has to be either the martini or the cocktail book.
With such useful quotes as "if the Lord hadn't inteded a three martini lunch why did he put so many olive trees in the holy land", you can now go back to work sloshed and informed. The pages are thick and stand up to hanging around on my counter while I try mixing martinis.

A "Thinking Man's" exposition!-.......2001-06-05
Wow. I always new Job was a tough one; but reading this book made me realise the depth of the book of Job. The transcript of a retreat- which this book is - really makes one reflect on his understanding of trials and their meaning. This is an excellent book; but keep your dictionary handy when you read it!
Dynamic and Creative Biblical Insights & Spiritual Guidance.......2001-03-28
This is a compact treasure of a book by a master biblical scholar and spiritual guide, filled with brilliant insights, thoughtful meditations, and pastoral wisdom. With the the Book of Job as a framework, Martini considers suffering, various Christian responses to suffering, and how we can react to the trials of life. He alternatively probes Job's character, considers third world suffering and our response to it, ponders human knowledge about self and God, and helps us to follow Jesus's trials to live as did Jesus.
Throughout the book, he ties together various others' analyses of the challenges that Job presents, referring to such diverse thinkers as Catholic liberation theologians and evangelical Protestants. A typical example of the depth of his meditations is his final one: He compares Job's "unwearying search for divine justice ... and the way human beings can understand it" with "The Song of Songs's unwearying search for love ... and the joy [the presence of the beloved] brings." I'd never heard the two compared before, but I delighted in the parallels he revealed.
In each chapter, Martini demonstrates miraculous wisdom and balance in considering difficult challenges in one's Christian life. His discussion of coping with a restless mind not only led me to better appreciate and balance Martini's continual emphasis on dialogue and an exchange of views with others, as evidenced by his Belief or Non-Belief? (written with Umberto Eco) or his thoughts about the role of doubt, but most important, it proved to be great pastoral advice for such people as me with a wandering mind.
Throughout the book, Martini's comparisons with other biblical passages, from both Old and New Testaments, prove extraordinarily creative and dynamic. He considers Job from diverse perspectives, all with the aim to guide one's meditations on the Bible and to richen one's spiritual life.
