This is another excellent book to add to my clollection. Easy to follow

5 out of 5 stars Charming, whimsical applique patterns--fantastic!.......2005-03-16

I have bought a number of Piece O'Cake books, and each one teaches me something new about applique. The thing I love about this one is the variety of designs. This book contains 100 charming applique patterns and five or six projects combining the blocks. Piece O'Cake originally published a book called "Dear Pin Pal" that had 50 applique designs. This new book combines those 50 designs and adds 50 new ones. Among others there are multiple flowers, trees, teapots, shoes, hats, houses, cats, chickens, and of course a piece of cake! If you have tried Becky and Linda's foolproof techniques taught in "The Applique Sampler" (something I highly recommend if you are serious about learning to applique) and you want to combine some applique blocks to make something all your own, this is the book for you. The chicken quilt is my favorite. It combines simple patchwork, fabulous fabric and color selection, and applique for a charming quilt. ***FYI There is a printing error. The blocks were printed at 4-1/4" inches instead of 5", which the body of the book says. This is important to know when enlarging designs to fit a specific space. The publisher has included a yellow sheet stuck to the inside cover explaining the error and how to enlarge the blocks at their printed size. Since these are applique patterns, the error does not detract from the usefulness or value of the book.***

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A+.......2004-08-23

This book has TONS of great patterns!

There are tons of flower patterns all are original ideas, never seen before flowers. There are also several houses, household items like a telephone, apron, chair, there are several butterfly and a dragonfly patterns and lots more. Along with all of these patterns, the authors show you several ideas for turning the patterns into quilts. An idea that I thought was great was that the authors created a redwork quilt using their applique patterns! If you have a tricky time with math this book makes it easy to enlarge or shrink the patterns you want to create. Also included are terrific directions easy enough for beginners.

This is an amazing collection of patterns by a couple of great women.

Book Description

Since 1992 Russell Jeavons has owned and cooked at a unique restaurant in an old cottage in one of South Australia's prized wine districts. It is famous in part because it's only open on Friday nights, but moreso for its fresh, simple food cooked entirely in Russell's wood-fired brick ovens. His pizzas are renowned throughout Australia, with fine regional ingredients artfully combined atop classic, thin, wood-oven cooked crusts.

Russell's Pizza is the kind of place where friends and family gather to eat within sight of the golden, glowing kitchen; where the garden is equipped with warming braziers and outdoor fire pits for chatting, relaxing, and munching. It is an atmosphere that many of us covet for our own homes—an outdoor space where we can come together on cool nights for warmth, fun, and good food.

The first part of Your Brick Oven is a step-by-step guide that takes readers through the stages of building an oven, from choosing the site to firing up for the first bake. Part two explains how to cook in the oven with invaluable tips for brick oven cooks, with recipes for sour dough bread, thin-crust pizzas, traditional roasts, fruit tarts, and sinful cakes and pastries.

Not what I hoped it to be. Not detailed enough to build a brick oven based on this book. The Bread Builder is a better book which I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Your Brick Oven.......2005-11-16

Whenever you see photos in glossy magazines of beautiful people in stylish clothes sitting round in dappled sunshine, laughing and sharing good food and wine, do you wonder why your life's not like that?
Well now Russell Jeavons (of Willunga's `Russell's Pizzas' fame) paints us into a far earthier picture with `Your Brick Oven: Building it and baking in it' (Wakefield Press). The book is a step-by-step guide to exactly that and it has the immediate effect of making you want to turf the lifestyle porn, grab a bag of cement and work up an appetite.
The central feat of the whole process is the construction of the oven whose domed cavity maximises the storage, convection and efficient circulation of heat from the wood fire. The dome is perhaps the most elemental yet complex of all structures. Versatile too: from humble dwellings like the igloo and yurt to St Peter's Basilica; from the utopian Millennium Dome to the tower of the Hiroshima prefecture building. But it also echoes the hemispheres of the planet, the upturned bowl of the sky, and bears more than a passing resemblance to our craniums.
For these reasons alone, it seems well worth taking up Jeavons' challenge to build one with your own bare hands. A dome in the backyard - I'd like to suggest - will put you in touch with both the chequered history of human endeavour and the cosmos. Better still, build several and have spy satellites - or Earth Google - mistake your place for Pine Gap.
Jeavons establishes a compelling connection between the ancient development of the brick oven and the evolution of courses from starters to desserts. Conservation of heat and fuel is the key. When the oven is `soaked', it reaches the sort of temperatures needed for things like pizzas. As it starts to cool, it's ready for baking bread, and roasting meats and vegetables, til, right at the end, it's cooled enough to bake cakes and tarts. The book provides us with mouth-watering recipes for all these treats and more.
Instructional and atmospheric photographs, clear diagrams and stunning book design all further contribute to a slender volume that is educational, inspirational and easy on the eyes.

1 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2005-08-28

This 84 page book is evenly divided between intstructions on how to build a brick oven and recipes for baking in it. I have not tried the recipes. I made an impulsive purchase of this book because I have been interested in building a brick oven for some time. I mistakenly thought that I would gain some insights and practical tips that were missing from The Bread Builders by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott. I did not. There is, in my opinion too little detail in this book to actually construct a quality oven.

I can't wait to make this quilt. I saw one made up at a quilt show or something very similar and couldn't wait to find the pattern. It is just so clever and fun. My quilt group is planning on making it as a block of the month. I am so happy I bought this book, it makes me smile every time I look through it.

This is a beautiful book. The instructions are easy to follow and the patterns are full size. It is nice that you do not have to make a hugh project all at once. The project is laid out in sections to make it easy to do small wall hangings. These ladies are very talented and the pieces of Santa's village are precious. I am so glad I bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Designs and Colors!.......2004-03-24

I borrowed this book from a friend and was amazed by the wonderful designs and use of color. The authors used a very unique and original method of arranging the appliqued designs. The designs in this book are interesting new twists on traditional designs like the pomegranate and other floral designs. One of the things that I found most interesting was that the backgrounds of the designs are pieced with fabrics of similar hues, tones, and colors which helped to enrich the design and add interest. All of the designs are applique.

If you're looking for a book on applique that is different then a lot of other books out there then this is the one! This book has imagination, spunk, color, and originality. I cannot wait to buy my own copy!

5 out of 5 stars A Slice of Christmas.......2005-09-15

One of the best and most helpful applique quilt books I've ever seen.A real must have

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs; lovely ideas.......2003-08-06

This is a beautiful book about appliqueing and their designs for Christmas. They cover everything from quilts, wall hangings to table runners, stockings and Christmas tree rounds. You can mix and match the ideas here and make everything you need for Christmas.
The nice parts are that the directions are complete for both hand piecing and machine (called fusible in the book) sewing & that most of the designs require small amounts (1/2 yard; 5/8 yard there) of fabric so if you have leftovers you can find places to use them here. Also nice is the ability to copy the designs for your own use. A nice present in itself.
The downside? You should be near a copier and have sharp scissors.
All in all, a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. It's a real joy to view and look at. I wish some of the designs were shown bigger in colour but it's a minor quibble.

5 out of 5 stars great book, very beautiful quilt patterns and new techniques.......2007-09-19

I love the projects in this book from Piece O'Cake disign. It made me want to learn more about applique. I had to get more books from the same Authors. The book provides helpful information and tips on color selections.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Designs, Could Have Used More Detailed Instructions.......2006-06-05

I was so inspired by the quilt patterns in this book and have enjoyed seeing Piece O' Cake designs evolve into ever more creative and inspiring quilt patterns with applique. After studying all the techniques for applique and giving my hand a try at it, I felt confident that I was ready to take on the challenge of some of their more advanced quilt projects. While I absolutely love the designs, I found some problems with the instructions and the templates for the Dresdon Dots pattern. My favorite quilt store once said to me that this is a common problem and that a good teacher is really a good editor. After a few rounds of trial and error I finally managed to figure out how to get things just right (www.quilguilders.blogspot.com). It would have been so helpful if there were more step by step directions, and close-up photos of finished blocks. If you haven't taken on the challenge of a double wedding ring quilt or something like a dresdan plate quilt, you might need to study these techniques first through a class or another book that focuses more in depth on construction techniques. For the publisher (C&T Publishing), I think it would be enormously helpful to have their instructions kitchen tested to make sure they are clear to the reader. Quilting is a very expensive art form, and I know more then one quilter that has purchased fabric, books, and supplies, only to wind up in total frustration at not being able to accomplish the desired results, due to editorial errors, ommissions, and so on.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A+.......2005-04-20

Ms. Goldsmith and Ms. Jenkins have done it again! If you've enjoyed their previous books about quilting and applique, you'll enjoy this one too! There are a variety of designs; just looking at them gives me ideas for many different types of quilts everything from the usual bright, sparkly, fun Piece O' Cake color ways to romantic, folk, traditional and contemporary.

Most of the designs in this book have curved piecing, which the authors give clear and concise directions to help you. Many of the patterns in the book also have paper piecing sections. Though, previous knowledge of either Piece O' Cake designs or previous knowledge of paper piecing/curves may be helpful they are not a prerequisite. An adventurous beginner could easily dive right into any of the patterns without difficulty. The authors have excellent directions for all of the various techniques involved in all of the quilts in the book.

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves Piece O' Cake designs, anyone interested in curved piecing, applique, paper piecing, or anyone with a sense of adventure. A+

3 out of 5 stars Sugar Flowers.......2007-08-23

Honestly, I was quite dissapointed with this book. I thought it would give me a more step by step instruction. I have found other books much more useful.

5 out of 5 stars this is for advanced decorators.......2007-07-15

This book is quite complete. Some of the chapters deal with fondant, gum paste [recipes included], seasonal gum paste flowers such as Alstroemeria, Anemone, Campanula,Bleeding Heart, Gardenia, Geranium, Parrot Tulip, Hibiscus, Iris, Water Lily, Bird of Paradise, Gloriosa Lily. as well as the usual roses, violets, daffodils. etc. This is not the entire bouquet! There's not just flowers in this book, There's unusual cakes as well as all the sugar art goodies to match, patterns included.

4 out of 5 stars Novice Cake Decorators Can Do It Too!.......2005-08-06

I like this book very much because it gives you step by step details and explanations. I have been able to practice making and using royal and fondant icing to decorate my cakes. I feel Mr. Woolley wrote this book as if he were teaching students in his studio. The pictures are excellent in their quality. This is a wonderful assest when using the book as your teacher. I look forward to taking a class with him.

3 out of 5 stars Technique Oriented.......2005-06-16

I ordered this book and my first impression was one of disappontment. The cakes aren't really all that stunning; however there are lots of step by step instructions on how to make flowers. So if you are looking for instructions on making flowers you might like this more than I did. If you want ideas for neat cakes, I dont think you'll be all that delighted. If I had looked at this book first in a bookstore I dont think I would have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Sugar Artistry.......2004-02-23

Cakes by Design works for me at every level, beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The photographs are stunning and the illustrations helped me through each process. I refer back to the book often for inspiration. I have a collection of sugar art books and Cakes by Design is the one that sparked my passion for this art form! I also bought the DVD which is a great companion to the book! I can't wait for Scott's next creative release. I would recommend this book to sugar art students of all skill levels. This book is an absolutely beautiful guide to works that any of us are capable of.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty patterns for left-over fabrics.......2007-03-17

9 patterns + a book idea. My first "Piece O' Cake Designs" book - I'm not sure if I will buy any more. The patterns make use of fabric more than design (in "I Spy Squares" over 100 different fabrics have been used) however the patterns for the quilts are quite sweet. Comes with full-size patterns so no more photocopying!

The last "pattern" is for a storybook. Create a book for a baby using photos of the child and his/her parents. This is a great idea but it is such a shame it in not quilted! You could make an equivalent quilted book by copying photos onto fabric and quilting pages. The pattern here is more in line with scapbooking. What a shame.

This book shows that it's 15 years old however, the techniques that are explained in words and pictures, step by step are an excellent source for both the beginner and the advanced decorator. A great deal of information is packed into the 320 pages. the book has examples of modelling, piping techniques, lace, filigree work, run-outs etc. and should prove a sound primer.
