Bufflalo Boring!!!! .......2007-05-08
I hated this book!!!! It's just about 2 kids and they wonder from place to place. This book is about Jack and Annie who go to the native times. It's not that interesting. But the series is that they just have to point to the book cover and say " I wish we could go there". Then the tree house teleports to the same place. There is a woman named Morgan who sends them there to find things like ( the four M's. Or 4 gifts). Then of course there going to find it and return home but....... when they come home time hasn't changed a bit. They go home and sleep. If you want to read the worst book ever in the world pick up this book today and you'll hate it. But if you want a good book then pick up " Magic Tree House #32" or anyother book in the "30's".
MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07
My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
One of the best.......2006-11-10
Magic Treehouse books have been an excellent incentive for my 6 year old to read. At first I was reading them all to him, now he's reading them for himself. They are the perfect combination of adventure, education, and danger! This particular one is one of his favorites.
School Book Review.......2005-03-04
Would you ever want to be chased by a big buffalo? I read a book about two kids that did. It is called Buffalo Before Breakfast by Mary Pope Osborne. This book is about a boy named Jack, a girl named Annie and a dog named Teddy. They travel back in time. This story is also about the buffalo and Native Americans. This is a really cool book. One of my favorite parts is when they saw a huge heard of buffalo. I also liked this book because I am a child and I would like to travel back in time. In this book I think that the author wants to share what Native Americans used to do. You should read this book to see if Jack and Annie, along with Teddy, get back to their own time!
A Great Book.......2005-02-06
The whole Magic Tree House Series is great-not just this one.The Merlin Missions are the best in the series.

Three Southern settings, three unique adventures, three complete bestsellers make up this one satisfying volume.
When a plane crash leaves her disfigured beyond recognition, TV reporter Avery Daniels finds herself in the hospital, mistaken for a selfish Texas socialite, the wife of a famous senatorial candidate. Initially unable to communicate, Avery is given plastic surgery that makes her "good as new." Stripped of her identity and completely vulnerable, she learns of an insider's plot to assassinate her "husband"--and she's supposedly in on it. Reporter's instincts may be the initial reason for keeping up the charade, but soon other instincts kick in and Avery finds herself trapped in a world of power, politics, lies, and lust. Mirror Image is full-speed from the start, and doesn't ease up until the final, dramatic showdown.
"Before I'm finished, I'm going to know which one of you killed my mother," proclaims Alexandra Gaither, a striking young attorney out for revenge. Ignited by the cryptic words of her ailing grandmother, Alex storms into a dusty Texas town like a hired gun and reopens the 25-year-old murder case she's not even old enough to remember. Best Kept Secrets takes on the big business of small-town politics. Confronting the three most powerful men in the community, Alex attempts to find the flaw in their carefully constructed history. She's ready for almost every possible complication, every hidden danger except this: her growing desire for one of the prime murder suspects.
Schyler Crandall is back in Heaven--Heaven, Louisiana. The adopted daughter of the most powerful man in town, Schyler ran away years before, distraught over a broken engagement and painful betrayal. Now, with her father fighting for his life in a hospital bed, Schyler jumps back into a world of secrets and lies to salvage a family logging empire on the brink of disaster. Slow Heat in Heaven has been hailed for its "steamy prose," and won Brown the Waldenbooks Award for bestselling single title release. It's the perfect capper for this three-in-one pleasure-fest. --Sara Nickerson

Always a happy ending.......2007-07-18
I enjoyed knowing that these love stories would always have a happy ending. This would be a wonderful relaxing read for the beach.
Not good at all.......2007-07-07
I normally like Sandra Brown's books, however this book of three novels must been very early work. It is so terrible I gave up in disgust and did not finish the last novel. I regret purchasing it.
Get it..it's great!!.......2005-01-21
I happened across this book in a used book store. I'm a fan of Sandra Brown, although I don't cut her any slack when I read one that isn't what I expected. Let's face it, we have to tell it like it really is. But all three of the stories in this one book happen to be some of Sandra's very best writing. Do yourself a favor and get it. I thought it was greeeaaatttttttt!!!!
Liked the first 2, the other was so-so.......2003-04-09
The 1992 edition of this book is riddled with spelling errors and poor punctuation. I found 10 errors alone in SHH. I enjoyed the first 2 novels. I like the mystery aspect of both. The third, SHH was sub-par. I lost interest half-way through. A great bargain overall. Smaller print than most hardcovers.
Sandra Brown is a literaray genius.......2002-01-29
I do not understand where all these bad reviews are coming form, I am a huge Sandra Brown fan, and I think that three stories in one was the perfect idea, by the time I have finished one, I'm ready to go to read all Sandra Browns books, and best kept secrets was one of my favorites, as for some of the other reviews, Sandra Brown writes fiction novels, so they are based soley on the creativity she finds within herself, and I think that she has done a dam good job at keeping us all entertain. No matter what she writes she does it in a way where I can not put the book down!

Book Description
For breathless action, gripping suspense, and intense romance, bestselling author Linda Howard never misses a beat–and her thrilling new novel will have your heart racing.
In the charming rural town of Trail Stop, Idaho, accessible to the outside world by only a single road, young widow Cate Nightingale lives peacefully with her four-year-old twin boys, running a bed-and-breakfast. Though the overnight guests are few and far between–occasional hunters and lake fishermen–Cate always manages to make ends meet with the help of the local jack-of-all-trades, Calvin Harris, who can handle everything from carpentry to plumbing. But Calvin is not what he seems, and Cate’s luck is about to run out.
One morning, the B&B’s only guest inexplicably vanishes, leaving behind his personal effects. A few days later Cate is shocked when armed men storm the house, demanding the mystery man’s belongings. Fearing for her children’s lives, Cate agrees to cooperate–until Calvin saves the day, forcing the intruders to scatter into the surrounding woods.
The nightmare, however, is just beginning. Cate, Calvin, and their entire community find themselves cut off and alone with no means to call for help as the threat gathers intensity and first blood is drawn.
With their fellow residents trapped and the entire town held hostage, Cate and Calvin have no choice but to take the fight to their enemies under the cover of night. While reticent Cal becomes a fearless protector, Cate makes the most daring move of her life . . . into the very heart of danger.

Slow and Boring .......2007-09-03
I'm usually never disappointed with a Linda Howard's books. I usually love both the female and male characters, but the heroin in this book is so annoying, she keeps going on and on about her late husband enough already we get it you miss him. No matter how much I read on I just never liked her.
On the other hand the hero of this novel was wondeful strong silent type quick witted, smart, brave and down to earth I like that. when I finished it I felt sorry for him he was stuck with her.
Ahhh my hero! fun read!.......2007-08-08
We don¡¦t think anybody needs to be encouraged to read Linda Howard, but just in case you¡¦re a newbie, she is soooo worth it! This is a terrific story about a shy, mumbling handyman, Calvin Harris, who falls for hard-working Trail Stop B&B owner, widowed mother Cate Nightingale. When one of Cate¡¦s customers leaves ¡V through an upstairs window without paying his bill or taking his clothes ¡V Cate reports it. But no crime¡¦s been committed, no accident¡¦s been reported, so the police don¡¦t do anything. Then ¡V shockingly ¡V armed men storm Cate¡¦s place, looking for something the man left behind. Oh, goody. You know what¡¦s coming next, don¡¦t you? Drool... Cal morphs into a quiet but deadly alpha the nano-second his woman is threatened, mowing through the baddies with his lethal bare hands ¡V oh, and a gun ¡V to get to her. Who knew? We did! º Not that Cate knew she was ¡¥his woman¡¦ until then, but whoa¡K she sure did after that. The action doesn¡¦t stop there; that¡¦s the prelude before the hailstorm of bullets, bombs and shootings hit Trail Stop. It¡¦s the modern-day equivalent of a Medieval siege, and no-one knows exactly what the villains want. Here¡¦s the thing. Quiet, unassuming Cal has a few secrets up his sleeve ¡V along with lots of hunky he-man muscles, stealth, and brilliant tactical know-how for war games. Settle in and watch the villains get theirs, and Cal get Cate.
A great read.......2007-07-19
A well plotted book with a small town full of memorable characters. Cate Nightingale, a widow with young twin sons, is trying to make a living as a bed and breakfast owner in a remote corner of Idaho. Cal, the local handyman, has been in love with Cate for 3 years but only conditions created by inept villains staging a terrorist attack on the area shock Cate into noticing Cal as a man. Was their romance created by extreme conditions, or would it have happened anyway? (Note Cate starting to notice Cal's strong hands in the beginning of the book, and her repeated attempts to make conversation with him.) The villains' reasoning which led to their attack on the area was so ludicrous, I wouldn't be surprised it it were based on a real news event. A great book- I would love a sequel.
Cover of Night by Linda Howard.......2007-07-10
Widow Cate Nightingale runs a bed and breakfast in Trail Stop Idaho, an isolated community boxed by mountains and a dangerous river. Cate's guests are sparse, consisting of rock climbers, hunters and fishermen, and Cate struggles to make ends meet. If it weren't for shy handyman Cal Harris, the B&B would fall apart and Cate would be bankrupt. But Cate is determined to raise her four-year-old twin boys in a safe environment and this charming town seems the perfect place.
Cate's nightmare begins when one of her guests climbs out of a window and disappears, leaving behind his personal effects. A few days later, two men show up and demand she turn over the man's belongings. Held at gunpoint, Cate fears for her life until Cal intrudes and forces the men to leave. Cate hopes that's the end of it, but soon she and the entire town find themselves held hostage by these two men, with the aid of four others. And there's no way to escape; the road leading into town has been blocked and the bridge over the river has been blown up. Cate and Cal team up to try to save their community. Their forced camaraderie leads them into not only danger but reveals the two share a hidden passion for one another.
Linda Howard is tops at romantic suspense. Although holding an entire town hostage seems implausible, she manages to make it real and provides a good read along the way. The chemistry between Cate and Cal is fun as it unfolds over the course of the book. With plenty of suspense, great characters, and a fast pace, Cover of Night will provide plenty of entertainment.
So very, very bad..........2007-06-29
Linda Howard, what happened????
I've noticed a strange trend in the last few years, where romance plots are getting heavier on thriller/mystery content and the romance part is becoming an afterthought. I wish authors would remember that if we didn't want 300+ pages of a love story, we wouldn't be shopping in the romance section to begin with.
This book was horrible. I guess it would have been okay if I had never heard of Linda Howard and didn't know what compelling love stories she could write. And if I had picked this up in a bargain bin somewhere, I guess...
I'm taking Linda off my "buy as soon as it hits the shelves" list, although I still highly recommend Drop Dead Gorgeous and To Die For. The fact that those are the two most recent LH books after this one make the mediocrity of this last effort even more perplexing.
Book Description
What They Didn’t Teach You in Your Screenwriting Course
Screenwriters, listen up!
Breakfast with Sharks is not a book about the craft of screenwriting. This is a book about the business of managing your screenwriting career, from advice on choosing an agent to tips on juggling three deal-making breakfasts a day. Prescriptive and useful,
Breakfast with Sharks is a real guide to navigating the murky waters of the Hollywood system.
Unlike most of the screenwriting books available, here’s one that tells you what to do after you’ve finished your surefire-hit screenplay. Written from the perspective of Michael Lent, an in-the-trenches working screenwriter in Hollywood, this is a real-world look into the script-to-screen business as it is practiced today.
Breakfast with Sharks is filled with useful advice on everything from the ins and outs of moving to Los Angeles to understanding terms like “spec,” “option,” and “assignment.” Here you’ll learn what to expect from agents and managers and who does what in the studio hierarchy. And most important,
Breakfast with Sharks will help you nail your pitch so the studio exec can’t say no.
Rounded out with a Q&A section and resource lists of script competitions, film festivals, trade associations, industry publications, and more,
Breakfast with Sharks is chock-full of “take this and use it right now” information for screenwriters at any stage of their careers.
Customer Reviews:
MEDIOCRE.......2007-08-03
First a disclosure - I am not a screenwriter. I am an avid reader. So the fact this book didn't thrill me may mean nothing. If you're in pursuit of this dream you may have the background to assess the advice proffered.
From purely a readers point of view I think the book could flow better. I have a keen interest in most things Hollywood, and those chapters dealing with Hollywood as town were intriguing. Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need
Good advice for any entrepreneur .......2007-07-29
I read this book expecting to find a lot of Hollywood gossip. Instead, it was a down to earth 'how to' guide for becoming a star-screenwriter.
Some of the suggestions are very specific to the industry. For example, how to decide when to move to Hollywood or how to get across the San Fernando valley for an interview when you don't own a car. Most of the advice is fairly general, though. Ben Franklin would approve.
The text is fast paced and entertaining. It doesn't quite read like a novel, but you will start watching for the author's name to appear on your local cinema.
Breakfast with Sharks!.......2005-05-31
Wow! Full of sound advice from experience. Michael Lent is clearly someone who pays attention to the whole process. The best part is he shares it with the rest of us! This book is fun to read from start to finish. Lent constantly encourages the reader (screenwriter) to adopt an attitude of, what I would call, "strategic humility" in their business dealings. How rare!!! This stuff helps in life too! I've never written a feature length screenplay, but I still found this book efficacious in learning the ins and outs of this goofy industry. And I know goofy - www.chrismundell.com
Practicle Advice.......2005-02-08
I'm on my third reading of Michael Lent's "Breakfast with Sharks" (2-7-05), and I highly this book to any screenwriter making serious go of trying to sell his/her work.
Micheal Lent doesn't make things up. His book is filled with real life "lived" experiences.
This book is a godsend if you've a written a screenplay and have started your foray into the next scary step-selling!! "Breakfast with Sharks" will help you disciminate information and buzzwords used at screenwrinting seminars and help decode the Hollywood Creative Directory.
My favorite section in the entire book is "Studio Notes: What They Are and How to Handle Them".
Overall a great book, insprationaly it ranks right up there with Karl Iglesias' "The 101 Habits of Hightly Successful Screenwriters".
- Review given by Eric C.Henrikson Febuary 7, 2005
One way to fish through the crowd.......2005-01-21
As a beginning screenwriter I know the competition is fierce especially for those like me without film school, living outside of Hollywood. That's why I bought Breakfast with Sharks. There isn't a screenwriting resource out there like it. Sure, I've bought a few screenwriting books but most of them say the same things, how to write a screenplay and a query letter. This book delves into the business of screenwriting, if you don't have a father in the business you will need to learn the business and Breakfast with Sharks is a way to do it. I found the book also enjoyable to read with personal stories of Hollywood misfortune and finally success. Breakfast with Sharks rises above the competition with a unique purpose and helps you to write above the competition with what many others forget to bring to Hollywood, a plan and a unique voice.

Book Description
This wordless picture book follows the trials of a little old lady who attempts to make pancakes for her breakfast. “The optimistic determination of the woman and the gentle humor of the illustrations make this an appealing book for the very young.”--School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
Versatile book.......2007-05-20
I really enjoyed reading this book with my [...]nieces. I like that it can be different lengths (a quick read when the night is getting late, or a lengthy discussion when there is more time). Often the kids like to read the same books over and over, and it's nice that this story can be different every time. The illustrations are cute and the little old woman is persevering.
Nice book.......2006-07-10
This is a great book to use with young children to teach predicting and inferencing skills. Also excellent for teaching children about cooking from scratch and supplying your own resources.
Picture book without words.......2006-02-17
I teach four year olds and they love books. A good picture book speaks to them and this wonderful book by Tomie dePaola is absolutely the best. Up until recently, the only picture book without words of which I was aware, was THE SNOWMAN. My students love sitting in the "Storyteller's Chair" and reading to the class. I discovered another book of this type and it's a Caldecott Honor Book - THE RED BOOK by Barbara Lehman. Of the three books, I love Tomie dePaola's book!
The story begins with a picture of a woman who is just waking up in bed with her cat and her dog. You follow her as she washes up and gets ready to make her breakfast. She is happily thinking about pancakes. You move along with her as she gathers all the ingredients. Alas, her pets almost spoil her plans but fortunately she has wonderful friends and neighbors next door.
A rough morning ends with a yummy breakfast...thanks to the neighbors!.......2006-01-27
Of course with a wordless book a story can take many directions. This story is a simple tale about an old woman with single-minded determination for...pancakes. Her trials and tribulations about getting pancake ingredients on her farm and ultimate failure at the hands of her dog and cat ends with her "following her nose" to the neighbor's house where the pancakes are just coming off the griddle.
Good to read to 18 months and older. Of course, its the skill of the reader that makes this fun. If one doesn't approach it with creativity and flair, it'll be flatter...than a pancake.
How Do You Read a Book With No Words?.......2006-01-13
How do you read a book with no words? The same way you did before you learned how to read - you look at the pictures...
What do you see?
The sun comes up over the hills on a still winter's morning. It seems we're in New England. The book's protagonist, something of a Yankee babushka, is nestling under her very warm covers. Her pets, a fat feline and a common looking brown hound, are just beginning to stir...
The morning ripens with potential as the thought of a tall stack of fluffy pancakes enters the mind of our lady of the house. So begins a quest, and several unexpected obstacles will have to be surmounted before desire ultimately is fulfilled.
My eldest daughter, now in college, remembers this book as one of her favorites. I asked her what stands out after all these years. It's the golden blob of butter, centered on the top of each tall stack.
For this, a recommendation of four stars certainly seems in order.

Included are hundreds of herbal porridge recipes for both prevention and remedial purposes. This book is great for laypersons as well as professional readers.
Customer Reviews:
Rare Information in the West.......2007-09-10
This book is specific to a very specialized diet, for example, if you are sick, the recipes have some rare, odd ingredients. The Book of Jook is very handy for those practicing Chinese medicine or Medical Qigong.
It is easy to read and understand what steps to make congee for various health restoring and body purifying and toning purposes.
The Book of Jook may be a bit hard core for a person trying to do something such as convert to healthy vegetarian eating, but for the specific uses described within, it rocks.
a book for professionals.......2007-02-13
this book is meant for professionals of tcm who have on the first hand theoretical and practical diagnosis knowledge and on the second hand an easy access to chinese medicinals.
you won't be able to cook most recipes by yourself because they need special ingredients.
however, the theoretical introduction is great and the last 20 recipes in the book are health-strengthening, rather than meant for sick people, and their ingredients are common and easy to find.
shi fan is the best breakfast ever!
Great idea .......2007-01-25
This is a great idea if you can find all the exotic ingredients.
This book is an excellent overview.......2006-10-18
From Flavor & Fortune published by the Institute for the Advancement of the Science and Art of Chinese Cuisine
Combinations of any number of grains, vegetables, meat, eggs, and/or Chinese herbs make porridge known as Jook or Congee. For most folk, they are breakfast foods. They can easily be made overnight in a crock pot. They are economical, popular among the elderly, nutritious, and delicious; and all are healthy alternatives to typical Western breakfasts. They surely beat bacon and eggs on any health-rating chart; and, when you try them, you are bound to change your morning food practices, even some of those for lunch.
Bob Flaws, a Traditional Chinese Medical practitioner (TCM) considered an authority on Chinese medicine, shares recipes collected from a number of Chinese language sources, all listed in the preface. Some have ingredients available only at a Chinese herbalist or a specialty store, but don't let than deter your efforts at tasting them even though it is difficult, perhaps, to find a Chinese food or herb source. Many only use ingredients available at your large local supermarket. One that may not be easy to make might be the recipe for Deer Antler Gelatin Congee. However, it can serve as an illustration of how the Jook recipes are presented. They start by listing their functions--in this case--it "Supplements the kidneys and fills the essence," then offers indications: "Essence insufficiency, infertility," etc., and next gives ingredients: "colla couru cerir (lu jiao jiao) 20 g., seven gyzae sativae (i.e. fresh ginger, sheng jiang), 3 slices" etc. Then the method of preparation and administration follows. In this case you first cook the rice into porridge, then add the powdered deer antler gelatin and ginger. It advises to: "eat for 3-5 days, most suitably in winter."
Those without culinary concerns and those who enjoy experimentation will find this book an excellent overview of beliefs and practices of professional TCM practitioners and it is a useful means of learning about TCM's philosophy and complexity. The Book of Jook.......2000-07-24
Excellent advanced research of Chinese diet and medicine. The theories of this book are in line with other books that I've read. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to change their eating habits to a more healthful Eastern diet.

love this cookbook!.......2007-05-17
I do wish this book had pictures, however, the recipes are good enough to sell the book on their own without them.
This is my second cookbook by this author and its the favorite of the 2. At least 90% of the recipes I can't wait to try, the other 10% I won't only becuase I don't like mushrooms=)
The recipes in here were well thought out and well put together. There is something in this book for everyone.
serious comfort food.......2007-02-05
I think that this book has some great ideas. I would recommend it.
The Big Book of Breakfast: Serious Comfort Food for Any Time of the Day.......2007-01-09
This book turned me into loving to cook breakfasts for guests.
Great recipes, nice variety.......2006-10-23
I have been working my way through several breakfast books and this has been one I have been turning to regularly.
Recipes I have tried and liked: Berry Slush, Orange Slush - both were easy and YUMMY! Smoked Salmon Omelettes, Farmer's Breakfast Casserole, Eggs Gratin, Sweet Spiced French Toast, Autumn Pancakes, Jiffy Buttermilk Pancakes, Oatmeal Buttermilk Waffles, Buttermilk Waffles,
Recipe tried, but needs tweaking: Apple Pie Pancakes. Tasted ok, but didn't look good - need to tweak this one.
Recipes I have bookmarked to try in the future: Orange Juice-Banana Smoothie, Lucy's Lemonade, Swiss Scramble, Scrambled Eggs with Sliced Tomato, Mozzarella, Fresh Basil, and Hazelnuts (though I foresee omitting the hazelnuts); Favorite Omelette; Zucchini, Tomato and Fresh Herb Omelette (can you tell I have an herb garden?); Puffy Cheese Omelet with Spinach and Fresh herb filling, topped with Tomato Salsa; Cowboy Frittata; Mushroom, Bell Pepper and Ham Frittata; Classic Quiche Lorraine; Spinach-Sausage Quiche; Egg-Sausage Strata; Crab Strata Supreme; Holiday Strata; Ham and Cheese Breakfast Strata; Apple Strata; Baked Eggs Florentine; Baked Cheese Blintz Casserole; French Toast with Orange Cream Filling; Spiced Overnight French Toast; French Toast Bake with Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread; Sticky Bun French Toast; Spiced Whole Wheat Pancakes with Nuts; Pumpkin Pancakes; Chicken Divan Crepes; Turkey and Mushrooms in Herb Crepes; Blueberry-Peach Dessert Crepes; Crab & Shrimp Crepes; Hawaiian Waffles; Gingerbread Waffles; Country Potatoes; Cheesy Potatoes; Oatmeal Brulee; Brown Rice Breakfast Bowl; Pumpkin-Apple Spice Muffins with Streusel Topping; Old Fashioned Buttermilk Biscuits with Honey Butter; Rich Scones with Lemon Curd; Cranberry Scones; Chocolate Chip Orange Scones; Scones with Spiced Sugar Nut Topping; Orange Nut Bread with Dried Cranberries; Chocolate Zucchini Bread; Overnight Spice Nut Coffee Cake; Summer Fruit Custard Coffee Cake; Famous Cinnamon Rolls; Glazed Lemon Cake; Cranberry Sorbet
As you can see, I have many breakfasts ahead of me full of experimenting with new recipes!!!
I will say if you have bacon or ham; bell pepper, mushrooms, eggs, cheese and potatoes, you can probably make 1/2 the recipes in this book. :)
Almost perfect!.......2006-02-10
To me this book is better than ok but much less than exceptional to deserve 5 stars. Ther are a fairly substantial number of recipes for all your key breakfast dishes such as eggs, omelletes, waffles, pancakes, stratas, quiches and more. The recipes overall are good, mostly simple and straightforward and some recipes are quite creative and original.
Whats missing here is photography. Not a single photo in the entire book. I personally like to see at least a few of the finished dishes to get a feel for the authors perspective. Take for example the Green Eggs and Ham. This is one that I would like to have seen in a colored photo and it would hav complimented the book.
Other than that observation, if you like breakfast and want to add some extra flair to your Sunday mornings, it's a good source for some new ideas.
Book Description
Greg Laurie brings us along on a walk with Jesus and his disciples, encouraging us to see him through the eyes of his disciples in order to know him better, challenging us firsthand with the main spiritual lessons Jesus entrusted to his followers, and inspiring us with the many promises that the Savior gave to those who choose to follow him. As we walk with Jesus, hopefully we, too, will come to see Jesus as his disciples did: as a living, breathing, ever-present friend, mentor, and teacher.

Breakfast recipes for everyone.......2005-01-26
Marion Cunningham taps into everyone's nostalgia for breakfast foods beyond cereal or scrambled eggs. The recipes are straightforward and feature a wide variety of tastes and types. Ms. Cunnigham's book reads as if she was a favorite aunt sharing her recipes.
Cunnigham also edited the new edition of Fannie Farmer's time-honored cookbook; she is a thoughtful writer and has a keen sense of how food fits into our modern lives. Her recipes are varied and you're sure to find something that you've never tried before but might want to.
A real pleasure and the 1 book you might want to have in your cookbook collection for breakfast.
PS - The recipe for Cream Biscuits (attributed to James Beard is a real winner and unbelievably simple to make.
Enjoy!
An Inexpensive Classic, Full of Great Suggestions.......2004-04-04
This durable classic was written by one of the better known names among American cookbook authors, who apprenticed with James Beard and supervised the rewrite of the Fannie Farmer cookbook. The book endures by providing a super coverage of a neglected culinary subject. While there are dozens of books with chapters on breakfast dishes, there are only a small handful of books devoted exclusively to breakfast written in the last 20 years. This book, neatly typeset, edited, and designed by the Alfred A. Knopf crew, should grace your shelf for a long time, even if your space is limited.
This book among my favorite types of cookbooks to own, as it gives you easy access to a great number of recipes on a single subject. This is even better than books on fish or red meat or potatoes or chicken, as it covers a wide range of recipes for all flavors available to a single meal. And, Ms. Cunningham does touch all the bases. Her chapter titles are:
Yeast breads such as American White Bread.
Toasts, French Toast, and Breakfast Sandwiches.
Quick Breads such as biscuits, cornbread, scones, muffins, and fruit breads.
Cereals, hot such as oatmeal and corn, such as granola
Doughnuts and Fritters
Griddling, as in pancakes and waffles
Eggs, as in boiled, omelets, frittatas, souffles, baked, scrambled, poached, fried, and so on
Fruit Fixing, as in applesauce, poached apples, stuffed pears, fresh juices, rhubarb, pineapple, mango, etc.
Potatoes, as in oven fries, hash browns, potato pancakes, potato bacon pie, and potato custard
Meat and Fish as in steak, chipped beef, corned beef hash, bacon, ham, fresh fish, fish hash, and salt cod
Custards and Puddings, an extension of eggs or cereals, depending on how you look at them
Cookies, Pies, and Cakes as in yum, yum, cookies for breakfast
Condiments, as in jellies, jams, caramel, syrups, and salsas
Breakfast Beverages as in tea, coffee, hot chocolate ya da ya da ya da
Breakfast Menus
Some reviewers have stated that her recipes are easy. While this may be true of most topics above, it is not true of yeast breads. Even the simplest recipes, and Cunningham's are relatively simple, require a modest amount of skill and a fair amount of time, so I must say that Cunningham is more concerned with good recipes and completeness than she is with speed.
While Miss Marion covers all the bases, some are covered a lot better than others. The yeast bread chapter has only a few samples and an exceptionally picky person may feel that the book suffers by not having a brioche recipe, as this is a perfect ingredient for French Toast. I will only point this out and generally suggest that if you are serious about making bread, check out either `Baking with Julia' as an excellent general introduction to baking or Rose Levy Beranbaum's `The Bread Bible' for the straight skinny on everything bread. For the very best Southern biscuits, check out Nick Malgieri's `How to Bake'.
The coverage of eggs and toast and condiments and cakes and custards and puddings and pancakes is terrific. This represents the strongest reason to own a copy of this book, if you are especially fond of leisurely weekend breakfasts or brunches. There are dozens of recipes for things I knew people did actually eat for breakfast, but never came close to having them myself or even seeing them on restaurant menus.
As with the bread and biscuit recipes, do not believe Ms. Cunningham has absolutely covered all bases in chapters such as Meats and Beverages. She does not always cover the most common recipe for a dish. A perfect example is her creamed chipped beef recipe that includes mushrooms. A classic recipe would not include mushrooms and would include Worcestershire sauce and a little cayenne.
This aside, this book packs an enormous punch with 288 recipes for a list price of $20 and an Amazon discounted price of $14.
Very highly recommended, especially for a modest budget and a big appetite for big breakfasts.
The Best!.......2002-02-22
This cookbook is fabulous. I have given as gifts numerous times, and have been told by each recipient that it is the favorite cookbook! I have even bought this cookbook used to give as a gift when it was out of print for awhile! The pancakes and waffles are terrific, and the other recipes are great, lots of new and old things to try. I am a collector and I have one thing to say: Buy it! This is a must have cookbook!
Good book for students!.......1999-10-23
As a student, I find this book FAN-TAS-TIC with a capital F. I just threw a biscuit and gravy party at my friend's house in WeHo, everyone loved it. Thanks Marion!
