Deepak Chopra
Eat Taste Heal: An Ayurvedic Cookbook for Modern Living provides modern applications of Ayurveda, humankind's most ancient system of healthy living. A complete guidebook and cookbook in one, this book offers every reader an individualized blueprint for achieving vibrant health. Fulfilling the adage, "Let Food Be Thy Medicine," Eat Taste Heal offers recipes that are inviting to both the kitchen novice and master chef.
The authors are a unique trio: physician, patient, and chef.
Dr. Thomas Yarema, M.D., director of the Kauai Center for Holistic Medicine and Research, created for his patients an understandable dietary program rooted in common sense.
Daniel Rhoda, a patient who found healing through Ayurveda, demystifies the ancient science that helped restore his health.
Chef Johnny Brannigan, an internationally trained Ayurvedic chef, has created more than 150 recipes to empower individual healing through the exploration of taste.

Best Cookbook.......2007-09-30
This book is not only a cookbook, but also a clear explanation of Ayurvedic principles, especially as they apply to what you eat. It has some simple recipes along with more in-depth ones.
Tasting Life with Lightning Balance .......2007-09-02
Eat Taste Heal is a masterpiece of beauty, love, and positive energies. I have been exploring ayurvedic ideas and principles and find the explanations easily understood. Ayurvedic practices weave an intimate connection to every moment, and to our essential self. Every thought or belief we hold, affects us on all levels of the mind body energy continuum. We can sense our Dosha's and how to shift our energies and beingness with changes in our foods and their combinations and this book will leap you into understanding this. More than a cookbook, the photos will bring you gratitude and appreciation for food, and our lives. I truly believe that the authors Yarema, Rhoda, and Brannigan have created a gift for humanity for decades to come. There are underlying aspects of this book that also reveal a shamanic approach to life... connected to nature, the elements and a spirit of the divine essence. Congratulations to the authors and all who read and share this book! I am recommending it to many of my clients and friends!
Expected Better.......2007-08-29
I'm glad so many people like this book. But I am not one of them.
I have followed Ayurvedic cooking for a few years and have reaped many healthy results from it (besides enjoying some of the most wonderful meals that I have ever experienced). Obviously, I came to this book with very positive expectations. I guess that I found two areas of the book that I did not like - the first part and the second part.
The first part sounded like a Western MD giving a very judgmental and negative-slanted presentation. It was all about what TO DO and what NOT TO DO. He crossed the line on allowing his readers to own their own thoughts. He also put much emphasis into the 'magic bullet' view of 'when this is wrong - do this' or 'to fix this symptom - do this'. To me, Ayurveda is more about cherishing one's Dosha (constitution) through food, thought, activity, etc in a whole life setting. When one looks to the symptoms, one looks (and gives power to) the negative expression of the body. The presentation of Ayurveda that I have been exposed to honors my intelligence and informs me that my life and health are my responsibilities. Gentle guidance then follows.
The second part of the book, the Recipes, is yet another presentation of Macrobiotic cooking. They ARE clean, healthy recipes. They just are not the rich, complex, exotic recipes that I have come to associate with Ayurvedic cooking. These recipes would actually make a good Macrobiotic Cookbook. People following these recipes would do very well for themselves and their health. That's just not what I intended to purchase.
I guess this book fills an important niche in presenting Ayurveda to a new audience. I was just looking for an Ayurvedic cookbook with wonderful recipes. If anyone out there is looking for this, then I would highly recommend Heaven's Banquet/Hospodar and Healing Cuisine/Johari. The latter is authentic and the former is a combination of authentic and adapted Western dishes. And when Ms Hospodar gives Ayurvedic instruction, it is like she is sprinking rose petals around you - enjoyable bits of information that invites you to select what you want to 'own'.
Eat right - digest well - live long - and enjoy.
Fantastic!.......2007-08-17
Very well laid-out, a pleasure to behold, packed with wisdom. Not only has the book helped me to address some of my own imbalances, it has helped me to understand and accept the differing needs of others. If everyone would read this book and follow the recommendations, the world would truely be a more peaceful, more loving place.
Ayurvedic cooking at it's best.......2007-03-09
Eat-Taste-Heal was written as a cook book but it is also one of the clearest written explanation of the Ayurvedic system for restoring and keeping good health. The explanation of the medicinal thought behind the food groups and therefore recipes is motivating and of course the end result is delicious. I highly recommend you share this book with family and friends.

Customer Reviews:
This is a wonderful healthy cookbook.......2007-01-07
This cookbook really explains why foods affect people differently and shows how, with delicious recipes, to balance yourself with many healthy Indian style dishes. So far I have tried the 15 min veg curry, Plain indian rice, Veg Barley soup, sesame sweeties and curried parsnips and carrots. Every recipe has been delicious - my son 11 is a big curry fan now. Americans definitely don't know how to use spices!! This book will show you how. I highly recommend it.
The deeper side of cooking.......2005-10-17
This book is the very first which transformed me from one who dislikes cooking into one that is eager to cook and learn more and more!!! I just simply cannot believe this is happening to me. I have never liked cooking. And it makes for the most thrilling reading too!!
Because of various health problems I was always advised to try different diets but never liked what I cooked. It was always the most boring task. This book has changed my attitude in the most profound ways, where I begin to perceive food not only as a source of nourishment but also a way to understand my own body's energetical needs and how to heal it. It is the most interesting fact to learn the connection between the food and my emotions. Through these quick, simple and most delicious recipes I am learning how to create foods which calm me when I need calming, ground me when I need grounding and cool or warm me depending on the season and the balance in my energy pattern. But it's not only that, I can even effect a positive emotional and digestive change in my husband through dishes that are meant for his type!
This book is slowly turning me from "cook hater" into "cook lover" and I cannot wait to try all of those recipes. The pumpkin or sweet potato halva recipe had us on our knees. It is sublime. The Indian tastes are simply like swimming in a deep ocean while the American cooking is more like swimming in a small and shallow pond. Why not jump in on the deeper side of life?
Great recipes!.......2005-10-06
This is a fantastic cookbook for experienced cooks wanting to explore both Indian cooking as well as Ayurvedic cooking. I've learned a lot about the appropriate use and balance of traditional Indian spices.
However, if you are relatively new to cooking, you may find the recipes to be a bit difficult. They are pared down for those who are more intuitive with cooking, but you will not have a step-by-step guide on how to do each task, like you might find in grocery store recipe magazines or Betty Crocker cookbooks. I have also run across occasional omissions of ingredients in the directions, and some of the grain recipes call for too much water (way too much).
On the whole, this book has a great net benefit. In fact, it's the only book I've been using for the last 3 weeks. Indian grocers sell incredibly affordable pantry items, and the food is simply wonderful. Please give this book a try!
Good Tastes, Love and Wisdom.......2005-07-20
This cookbook has been one of my favorites ever since it first came out in 1990. Now 15 years later, it is ripped, worn, bent, curry stained and I'm buying a new copy. The recipes taste great, have greatly enhanced my family's health and vitality and been enjoyed by many friends. But it's not just a cookbook. The authors bless us with an Ayurvedic perspective on diet, constitution, lifestyle and body/mind/spirit healing and also clarify contemporary health issues related to sugar, dairy products and soyfoods in the light of ancient wisdom. This book is beautifully written, intelligently conceived and vibrates with wisdom and love.
Cook book.......2004-12-28
If you have read Tibetan Ayurveda you will find a lot of similarities with this book. This book is Indian Ayurveda. The authors have made a small confusion between Neem leaves and curry leaves. This book will teach you about the ancient art of Ayurvedia and its benefits. You will have a nice understanding about various aspects of Indian Cooking, the ingredients and the way they make an extremely healthy food system, whether it is your breakfast, lunch or dinner. With all the additional information on Ayurveda, it will become extremely useful if you ever decide to do your own delicious cooking.
Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www.S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.

Love it!.......2006-02-25
We love this book! We have made many of the recipes that have all tasted great and are healthy. We also gave it to everyone for Christmas and they all love the recipes too.
Simple and practical.......2005-12-04
This book offers a simple way to start eating healthy. I've been interested in gourmet food and cooking for years and then became a student of Ayurveda. Though the concepts of Ayurvedic eating are introduced in the beginning, and the recipes follow ayurvedic guidelines, the book isn't complicated with hard to understand terms. Best of all, the preparations are wonderful for a taste-discriminating Western palate.
The best cookbook I've ever owned!.......2005-11-11
This cookbook is filled with healthy and delicious recipes. It is well-written, with easy to follow directions and ingredients that are readily available. I really like the 30-day meal plan that is included; it takes all the guess work out of menu planning. While I was not a vegetarian before I began using this cookbook, I am now! The food is so delicious and high enough in protein that I don't miss meat at all--although for you die-hard carnivores, there are many recipes that have meat-optional directions. This book has everything from breakfast foods through desserts and these recipes have gained approval from my toughest critics: my 10- and 14-year-old sons. Although not diet food, my husband and I have both lost weight since we began following the 30-day plan. The food is so nutritious and satisfying, that our junk food cravings have been greatly reduced. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for healthy and delicious recipes. Enjoy!
Great food !! And it's all veg !!.......2005-10-21
After attending one of Chopra's seminars, I decided to try out the Chopra Cook Book. Although you might find some of the combinations different from usual, the taste is wonderful and you will, for sure, feel the diffence in your body. May take some time to ajust, if you decide to stick to it, like me, but even for a side serving they are great. Not exactly all diet food, (check out the calories) they are delicious. These recepies have finaly got me on the Vegetarian path! And I feel great !!!
Great, Easy Recipes.......2005-01-18
I buy cookbooks to read and if compelling, I will make a recipe or two from it. This one is so compelling that I've made four recipes in the first week of owning it. The introductory chapters on health and eating are informational. The recipes are curious enough that I tried one. It was delicious and now I can't stop. The ingredients are easy to find as well.

Customer Reviews:
Ayurveda Cookbook with ingredients you have!.......2007-09-30
This cookbook is excellent because the recipes are simple and easy to understand. Also, you can find all the ingredients! I've made 6 recipes so far, and all have turned out excellent. (Try the herb baked fish--mmmm)
great addition to ayurvedic cook's library.......2007-01-26
This book has been a wonderful way to introduce Ayurvedic cooking into my kitchen. I love the fact that these recipes are not "indian" dishes, for variety. I've tried the Salmon Loaf, Seafood cakes, beans & rice, and some very simple side dishes to go with these....all are great. I can also serve these to others who don't care to have indian food 7 days a week ;) As a beginner, I find most recipes in other, traditional Ayurvedic cooking sources a bit too much for my full-time work week, yet as an added benefit from using this cookbook I found that I've built up the courage to try those challenging ones as well... maybe on the weekend, initially. I base this review on comparison with the more complex "Eat - Taste - Heal", "The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia" (good reference on Ayurvedic properties of single foods, but not on "mixing"), and "The Path of Practice" (although this one is not really a cookbook). Hope my experience encourages you to try the Ayurvedic diet!
Not snappy.......2007-01-10
I prefer cook books with color photos, times to both prepare and cook food and this one hasn't had much of a life out of the book case.
It is hard to find good vegan cook books, I like the subject matter and that it does address food as a source of healing.
Quick and Easy Ayurvedic Cookbook.......2006-02-01
The recipes are easy to follow and not expensive to make. Trying to eat healthy gets to be so expensive, this book offers many tasty economical alternatives to fast food.
perfect for the lazy healthnut.......2005-06-27
This book has easy to follow/easy to cook recipes. I've already made two of the recipes, neither of which required obscure or expensive foods, and both of which were very easy to make. Both recipes took 20 minutes TOTAL - preparation & cooking time - to make, which is an added bonus since I find many veggie/health recipes to be very consuming. To top it off, the results are tasty. One word of caution - some of these recipes are a little ayurvedic suspicious - there are some foods which one may consider to be unfriendly to certain doshas but are listed underneath the dosha recipe anyway.
Book Description
arsenalpulp.com :
UPDATE: 2nd printing now available.
Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old holistic healing tradition from India whose history is linked to the development of yoga, in which physical and spiritual well-being comes from a number of sources, including a healthful diet based on one's individual constitution. Today, it has a growing constituency, including well-known practitioner Dr Deepak Chopra.
Ayurveda is about achieving a physical and spiritual balance through a number of means, including diet. This all-vegetarian cookbook based on Ayurvedic traditions features delectable and nutritious recipes that appeal to particular doshas, which are one's personal constitution based on physical and mental characteristics: air (vata), fire (pitta), and earth (kapha) (the book includes a dosha questionnaire so readers can determine their own). And while the recipes are authentically Ayurvedic, they feature easy-to-find ingredients and modern-day cooking methods appropriate for busy lifestyles.
Recipes are divided into Breakfasts, Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Entrees, Grains & Breads, Sweets & Desserts, and Condiments. The book also includes yoga postures (with photographs), cleansing programs, and information on aromatherapy, colour therapy, and menu plans. There also are suggested meat substitutions for non-vegetarians (Ayurveda is not exclusively vegetarian, although this book is).
Written with both converts and beginners in mind, The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook is a twenty-first-century approach to an ancient tradition that will restore your health, energy, and sense of well-being.
Partial proceeds from the sale of this book will go to support the Pamoja Foundation, www.pamoja.org.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Recipes.......2007-08-29
This is, in my estimation, a good Ayurvedic cookbook. It has many authentic and adapted recipes. Ms Sondhi presents in a comfortable and familiar style. There are times that she steps outside Ayurvedic guidelines. But when she does, she first makes sure that the reader knows what the guidelins are - THEN she steps out. Very candid and has produced an enjoyable book.
The first section gives a nice overview of Ayurvedic facts. It is not in depth. She does not presume to teach the reader who is new to Ayurveda. Instead she gives guidelines, fills the Appendix with many directions to follow, AND focuses on great recipes.
I feel that there are very few good Ayurvedic cookbooks that are available to the Western market. Most have visions of being the Complete Guide to Ayurveda. Most don't succeed. I think Ms Sondhi did succeed in her endeavor - this is a good one.
Lots of Food, Little on Healing.......2007-05-19
I purchased this book anticipating condition specific recipes, however, the coverage of the doshas and the problems caused by imbalance is superficial at best. The recipes provide a tasty introduction to mostly Indian style vegetarian food. Many are labor intensive and quite heavy on the carbs and a number involve frying. A few require exotic ingredients that may not be easily accessible outside of urban areas. No nutritional information is provided.
The book is readable and the author has a pleasant, conversational style. The recipes I've tried have all been satisfactory, including the vegetable dishes, dals, pickles, lassis and rice puddings. The book is not limited to Indian cooking-there are also recipes for a fat free muesli, gazpacho and a refreshing fruit soup. There are suggested menus that are a bit starchy for my tastes and a cleansing/fasting program. Cursory chapters on yoga and aromatherapy are presented but without real depth. There is nothing on herbal supplementation and skimpy instructions on implementing the cleansing program. If your primary focus is on healing, you would be better served by offerings by Letha Haddady or Barbara Proust. If you are looking for tasty ways to include more vegetables in your diet, you will be satisfied by this book.
I love this book!.......2007-01-07
I came across this cookbook at the library, flipped through it, and instantly knew I needed to own this book!! I've only tried a couple of recipes, but can't wait to try more! (Definately try the Carrot Halva on p. 241, spiced with cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon - and I also love the Spicy Almond Milk (p.273) with a unique blend of anise, pepper, and ginger - delicious!) Other recipes of interest include whole-wheat chapatis, paneer samosas (paneer is an Indian cottage cheese), and blackberry oat bars...! Amrita Sondhi explains how foods and spices can balance your dosha/constitution and includes a few menu plans, cleanses, and several yoga postures.
If you like cooking authentic Indian dishes with wonderful spices, you'll truly enjoy this book (and so will your tastebuds!)
These delicious dishes are provided with clear and 'kitchen cook friendly' instructions .......2007-01-04
"The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook: Healthful, Healing Recipes for Life" by Amrita Sondhi is a compendium of 250 culinary recipes showcasing Indian cuisine. These delicious dishes are provided with clear and 'kitchen cook friendly' instructions for turning out meals that are as nutritious as they are palate pleasing. Of special note are the included appendices: 'Seasons of the Year', "Menu Plans', Cleanses', 'Yoga Poses for the Doshas', 'Alternative Ayurvedic Therapies', and 'Food Guidlines for Basic Constitutional Types'. From Fresh Fruit Salad with Yogurt & Flax Seeds; to Vegetable Samosas; to Tea Party Channa Bateta, to Cinnamon & Sweet Warm Almond Milk, "The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook" will make a welcome and impressive addition to personal and community cookbook collections - and prove to be of very special interest for dedicated students of Indian cooking, holistic health, yoga, and Ayurvidics.
Book Description
In
A Simple Celebration, Ginna Bell Bragg, chef at the Chopra Center for Well Being in La Jolla, California, and Dr. David Simon, director of clinical programs for the Center, explore the spiritual and mindful aspects of cooking and offer a practical, easy-to-use vegetarian cookbook that incorporates Ayurvedic health care principles into more than 140 delicious recipes.
While many recipes in
A Simple Celebration have a subtle Indian influence, Bragg and Simon include a variety of other cuisines as well, resulting in a balanced, health-enhancing diet. With recipes such as Warm Wild Rice Salad, Pasta with Madeira Mushroom Sauce, Ginger-Molasses Muffins, and French Apple Cake, it is clear that the ancient mind-body principles of Ayurveda can be readily applied to dishes from every culture.
Supporters of Ayurvedic health care, Bragg and Simon emphasize in
A Simple Celebration the importance of understanding one's dosha, or body type. Dosha recommendations are given for each recipe in the book, and a chart is provided that describes the taste quality of common vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, dairy products, and other foods.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
A great book !.......2003-04-14
I was excited when I got my book in the mail. I esp. like the desserts and am looking forward to trying the other interest recipies.
Ayurveda? Not!.......2000-07-13
Cooked Honey! Anyone who has studied Ayurveda in the least knows that cooked honey is one of the most toxic things you can eat. Hardboiled eggs that are then fried! Ayurvedic? Gimme a break. To call this book ayurvedic is misleading. Try "Heaven's Banquet" if you want real ayurveda. If you're just looking for vegetarian recipes and will be satisfied with fifty (count 'em!), stick around.
Spiritual Food for your Body & Soul.......1999-05-25
This book is about love. As you read the descriptions of Aruvedic personality & body types, you find your perfect reflection personified. The reverence for food preparation, choice, and content provides food for thought as well as a balance for one's body. Simple dishes nourish the spirit, as do the recipes contained therein. Grace, quality, and charm are the components of a lifestyle resulting in this type of holistic cuisine. Permission to slow down, observe and savor life are granted as you experience the pages of this memorable cookbook.
GREAT and easy receipes.......1999-01-19
A book that has opened my awareness to consciously tune into not only the energy of food but to also be ever aware of the consciousness that I bring to food preparation. Great vegetarian recipes, easy to follow and so far always delicious!
