5 out of 5 stars excellent book!.......2007-10-09

This book was a great choice to get for our employees to share. It covers a variety of situations and workplaces and answered many common business etiquette questions that have arisen.

5 out of 5 stars The Etiquette Advantage in Business.......2007-02-19

This book is a must read for anyone graduating from school and headed into business. It gives outstanding advice on everything from cell phone etiquette, e-mail etiquette, cubicle farm etiquette, table manners, the interview process, thank you's, etc. It's a good read, and an outstanding reference book to have in one's library.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference tool.......2007-01-04

Ever have that 1 question on 'how to' conduct yourself in a business situation? This book has the answers and the guidance on 'what to do.' Even the most experienced professional comes across a business situation question ... it's nice to have the answer before the situation occurs!

4 out of 5 stars Book everyone should read.......2006-06-27

This is wonderful book explaining what etiquette is really about. One will learn everything -- from how to dress, table manners, office setup, how to print business cards to how to prepare resume. I would recommend to everyone to read it regardless if they are working or not. While I do not agree with some of the rules regarding "who pays for lunch" - I would say that this is a book everyone should read and understand because it will improve their interactions with others.

5 out of 5 stars Emily Post's Etiquette, 17th edition.......2007-02-17

This is a great reference, handy and easy to use. I bought it for home, but it wound up in my office. My co-workers continually come in to quickly leaf through for advice. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Emily Post's Etiquette, 17th Edition(Thumb Indexed).......2007-01-31

For Christmas 2006, upon my daughter's suggestion, I purchased this book for each one of my four grandsons. The first one to open the book began to complain, but when I looked at the other three, their heads were buried in the books, and soon the complainer did too. All four boys are college age, and have the book with them away at school or close at hand. It is the perfect life-long etiquette reference for 19 and 21 year-old boys, and even for me!

5 out of 5 stars Grand Ma Ma's Gift.......2007-01-13

After observation for the past sixty years or so of present day human group contact and serving as a teacher of young children during a great deal of that time, I have come to the realization that many of my generation did a poor job in equipping their children with the necessary tools to teach their own children how much more civilized our civilized world can be when we are aware of each other and strive to make all contact as pleasant as possible. Concern and respect for all whose lives you touch makes your own life happier and more worth while. Knowing how to conduct oneself in a given situation allows you to concentrate on those around you rather than worry about yourself.
On a slightly different note, a simple walk in any mall brings to light people seemingly oblivious to strangers around them. In most cases they are not deliberately rude; they are unaware. They are so focused on themselves and their current needs that they allow their children to run unchecked and they themselves proceed across the paths of others without any realization that they have cut someone off. This, of course, doesn't just happen at the malls. It happens everywhere. I can attest to this after almost falling down 20 steps in Reed Arena while at a basketball game, when a child of five or six didn't realize that the elderly woman in front of him using a cane to walk down might be dislodged as he ran passed her. I might add, that I never heard a word to guide him by his father nor of apology to me.
Your Emily Post's Etiquette from Amazon may have already arrived. If not, it will come soon. I have decided that this year I will send this book to all of the grandchildren on their birthday. This is not because any of you are rude, uncaring young people. All of you are quite the opposite. This is simply to help you guide your own children. Although this Biblical quotation means something quite different in the Bible, I think that it also applies here. "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

Book Description

Is the butter plate on the right or the left? How should you introduce someone whose name you can't remember? What is the polite way to handle a guest who arrives early? Emily Post's Entertaining provides answers to these and many other questions that vex today's hosts and guests.

Emily Post's Entertaining is a practical guide to hosting with elegance and ease. Its goal is to give everyone the confidence to handle any get-together, from casual and cozy to formal and fancy. Among the wide range of events and entertaining quandaries Peggy Post addresses are: getting together for everything from a Super Bowl party to dinner with the boss; throwing children's birthday parties; giving a casual dinner with takeout food; making appropriate introductions; jump-start dinner conversation; choosing the right wine; and much more. Entertaining covers the basics of hosting, but most importantly, it reminds you that successful entertaining springs not from the good china and an elaborate table setting, but from the people you are with and the memorable time you spend together.

"The best hosts spin magic out of thin air, creating the kind of special occasion guests can't stop talking about."

From simple dinners and casual parties to formal business functions and catered events, Emily Post's Entertaining shows you how to be the perfect host. With Peggy Post's guidance, you can breeze through toasting your guest of honor and unflinchingly manage sticky social situations such as unanswered invitations and surprise guests. Emily Post's Entertaining helps you to entertain with elegance and ease, making every get-together a memorable event.

5 out of 5 stars "Emily Post Etiquette " - A Valuable Companion.......2006-02-26

This 17th edition in hardback is excellent. I have constantly referred to it since its arrival here in Bundanoon, Australia (Down Under)and have already had favourable results from its usage. I have consequently recommended it to several members of my family and my friends.

5 out of 5 stars "Emily Post Entertaining" - Everything you need to know.......2006-02-26

This was so good I immediately passed it over to my granddaughter as a gift and made plans to buy more copies for friends and relatives. I found it suitably covered all occasions for entertainment including St. Patrick's Day. Bravo!!

5 out of 5 stars An Informative, Non-Stuffy Etiquette Resource.......2000-11-15

I purchased this to serve as a guide for my first-ever party in my new-ish apartment. What a great resource!

Peggy Post's _Entertaining_ covered a lot of ground -- from serving a formal sit-down dinner in one's home to gracefully declining an invitation to a friend's barbeque. I especially enjoyed the incredibly helpful section on house guests. It discussed both how to properly *host* a house guest and how to *be* a sought-after house guest. (My mother was right. You should never to a host's house empty handed.)

Each tip or explanation is written in a clear, congenial way. Not once did I feel that Ms. Post was "talking down" to the reader. Rather, her tone was similar to that of a friend giving another friend sage advice.

Additionally, I liked how the book was organized, as it broke entertaining into a number of easy-to-follow categories including formal parties, casual cocktails, or impromptu get togethers. Therefore, I could easily pick and choose what I needed to read and save the other material for a later date.

I might suggest giving this book as a housewarming gift to a new home owner or as a wedding gift (attached to s place setting) for social newlyweds. They will surely appreciate the advice of this expert!

It's obvious that Peggy Post inherited many of her skills and zestiness from the famed Emily Post, etiquette guru.

In 1922, Emily Post came out with the definitive book on etiquette. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, her great-granddaughter-in-law Peggy Post has updated and revised the opus into an 845-page 16th edition that takes modern conundrums and lifestyles into account. If you're wondering when to put a napkin in your lap and which foods may be eaten with fingers, the information's still there. But situations Emily never dreamed of--matters of e-mail, cellular phones, step parents, fourth weddings, and in-line skating--are considered with the same grace that made Emily the last word on civility in the 1920s.

Book Description

Earlier in this century people turned to Emily Post for etiquette advice about the way they lived in the rapidly changing age known as the Roaring Twenties. As we prepare to enter a new millennium people continue to turn to Emily Post for advice on etiquette and manners. While etiquette remains a code ofbehavior based on kindness, consideration and unselfishness that does not change, our manners, the practice of etiquette, must change as our world changes. The world of today is both vasdy different and astonishingly the same as the world Emily Post herself knew. Seventy-five years after Emily Post wrote her groundbreaking book, Peggy Post, her great-grand-daughter-in-law, has thoroughly revised and updated Emily Post's Etiquette to take us into the next century.

The hallmarks that define Emily Post's Etiquette as an indispensable resource remain: the correct table-setting for an intimate dinner party of eight, the proper response to a formal third-person invitation, and of course, all the details of planning a wedding. But in a world where our neighbors and coworkers are as likely to come from the other side of the globe as the other side of town, changes both subde and radical are necessary in our manners. In addition to a chapter devoted to doing business internationally, readers find not only advice for visiting those from other cultures living in our country, but also guidance on wearing ethnic clothing when traveling in other countries. Previous editions have explained the traditions of Christianity and Judaism but now for the first time readers learn about birth and death ceremonies of Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. Sports participants who used to read only about the etiquette of golf, tennis, skiing and sailing, now learn about in-line skating and snowboarding as well.

Emily Post's Etiquette, is not just for your grandmothers generation. It's for all of us.

1 out of 5 stars Emily Post is rolling over in her grave.......2005-04-24

Ms. Post is a Post by marriage only - perhaps that explains why she didn't inherit Emily Post's good sense. No wonder people are doing so many incorrect things - horrible etiquette books like this are giving improper advice. I realize that conventions change to meet the times, but advising people that it is acceptable to wear black to a wedding or that a bride may discreetly write "no gifts, please" on a wedding invitation is just telling people to act in poor taste. Isn't that the whole reason people read etiquette books in the first place?

Do yourself a favor and buy any of Judith Martin's Miss Manners books. Emily Post may have the better-known name, but Miss Manners gives the better advice.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite what her grandmother wrote..........2004-11-05

Change, as my dear husband noted, is morally neutral -- neither good nor bad in itself.

However, I think I prefer the older versions of _Etiquette_, in part because I loved Mrs. Kindhart and Mr. Gilding and Mrs. Oldname and all of the other marvelous people that populated the earlier books (pseudonyms for the friends to whom Emily Post dedicated the original 1922 book). My old friends seem to have been ruthlessly murdered in the "modernized" version.

In addition, Peggy Post seems to countenance "innovations" that I believe the original author would have scorned, such as inviting "John Smith and Guest," without bothering to find out whom your supposed friend is seeing these days and whether or not this is a person whom you would actually want to invite (your brother's ex-wife? Your boss's wild daughter? The employee you fired? The potential is endless).

But beyond that, there is something missing in the style. It carries the cachet of the time-honored Post name, but less of her wit and sparkle.

I think Emily Post may have had fun writing her book, and Peggy Post may have thought it uphill work -- or perhaps her writing was excellent originally and her editors created hash from it; at any rate, the writing style is less formal than I hoped (the informality subtly reduces its authority), and it sometimes reads like a committee bickered over each phrase, and occasionally like no one was particularly paying attention.

So I am somewhat disappointed, but primarily because I adored the earlier versions; doubtless there are many who prefer the new version for exactly the reasons that I dislike it.

I also note on the author's website that the 17th edition was released on October 26, 2004, so perhaps if you choose to read a "modern version," you will want to get the most recent.

5 out of 5 stars Prim and Proper.......2004-08-27

If only manners and traditions like these were practiced in today's day and age. Being a resident of New Orleans I have access to a wide variety of tea houses and alike. Nothing is more fun than visiting a tea house for high tea and knowing how to act and what to do. America is always on a modern road to contemporary life and it's sad. Please reclaim these traditions and buy this book

4 out of 5 stars Manual to good etiquette.......2003-01-23

This book has great suggestions on everything from how to correctly crack lobsters, to how to use silverware, and what to expect and do when going to a Buddhist temple, Hindu temple, or a synagogue.

It tells what should happen to gifts given during an engagement that is broken off, suggestions for brunch menus, and includes a large section on wedding ettiquette. It also provides a good deal of information about traditional customs.

The size of the book is rather cumbersome, so it would be best used as a reference manual.

4 out of 5 stars Covers virtually everything.......2003-01-03

Yes, I liked it and it's the thickest and most highly rated book out there. But, couldn't it cover more informal settings? The kind MOST of us would use it for?

This book contains some VERY useful information. Most of the suggestions it gives for handling certain situations are impeccable;however, some of them are questionable, i.e. what to do with food taken from your mouth during dinner. Otherwise this book is the bible of the up and coming socialite, and a good refresher for the seasoned.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2003-05-23

Mrs. Post gives good unbiased advice on a slew of situations. It's to the point and practical.

I appreciate the simplicity and the inclusion of Post's infamous manners to help me plan a proper wedding. The big drawback is that the book is so crisp and worth saving as a memoir of the planning process and 'big day' that I am timid to write in it and make full use of its pages for fear I'll mess it up. Otherwise, it is a classic and simple gift for a newly engaged couple.

3 out of 5 stars Planner Does Not Meet Expectations.......2005-11-26

I am a huge fan of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette book and it has helped me be a better bride, bridesmaid, and wedding guest. It is well organized and lays the proper etiquette for every possible scenario. It's wonderful.

I wish I could say the same about the planner. I was a little disappointed. Although it lays out the same etiquette tips as in the book there is little writing room for notes and if you use pencil the paper does not take kindly to eraser. It would be nice if the book had pockets to carry brochures and other paperwork that wedding venues are so liberal to hand out. They also need a "matrix" of some sort to compare certain venues.

Perhaps this planner was not useful for me as my reception venue was all inclusive, but I would recommend making your own. Many wedding planners should be personalized and should meet your specific needs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource.......2004-04-29

This book is simple and elegant - you can judge it by its cover. It takes the wedding planning process step-by-step, helping you decide each aspect of your wedding by offering the full range of choices, down to veil styles.

The vendor questions were extremely helpful, and due to the color and size of this book I did not feel silly taking it with me to appointments. It has adequate space to write but is more of a workbook style, with lists and notes throughout instead of all in one place.

I did not use this book all the way through my engagement because I needed more detailed, personalized information. It was excellent for planning. It was definitely our number one resource for etiquette and formality questions.

Book Description

Your wedding day. It should be one of the happiest days of your life, not one of the most harried. The perfect wedding doesn't just happen--it takes planning. Things you never thought about suddenly occupy your every waking hour: How are the invitations worded? What is a semiformal wedding anyway? Why are announcements sent out, and who receives them anyway? What obligations does a wedding invitation confer on the recipient? Do guidelines exist for selecting a wedding gift? Who gives the wedding showers? Are there any guidelines for finding and working with a videographer?

Brides and grooms and their parents will find the answers to these questions and much more in the pages of this indispensable book.

It's a period piece; some relevance to contemporary weddings, but not much. Miss Manners is much better.

3 out of 5 stars A good start with your wedding plans.......1998-06-29

Since most of us who'll buy wedding planning books are first time brides, this is a good one for starters. It's a FAQ collection. It covers broad areas, from what bridesmaid's responsibilites are to do-you-need-to-take-off-your-glove-for-the-ring-exchange. It's helpful, although you might get answers like that in other wedding etiquette books.

I liked this book but bought it not knowing it's from 1939. It was interesting to read but not something that would be very helpful today.
