Book Description
This highly successful undergraduate corporate finance text is recognized for its tradition as the best corporate finance textbook at teaching finance. Block and Hirt's approach focuses on pedagogy and how students learn. With the Ninth edition, the authors' careful writing style and step-by-step explanations make the text easy to understand. They also have presented a strong real world emphasis throughout this new edition. Not only will students find real-world emphasis in text examples using "hot" companies recently mentioned in the business press, but there are also Finance-In-Action boxed readings that give an in-depth look at real business decisions, and consistent placement of real company logos in the text's margins. The Ninth edition continues to present a simple and understandable story of finance for students. All of these features come together to present a comprehensive story of finance.

Excellent Self Study.......2005-08-13
The text is very easy to read and simple to follow along. The self study guide that comes with it is very handy to get a full understanding of the mathematical equations. I was disappointed that the weblink provided in the book to get more up to date information from Standard & Poor's was not working. I had to order the 11th edition for my second finance class but that was by order of the university. When the 11th edition arrived the weblink in that book worked. I really enjoy reading the book on my commute to and from work. I recommend this book to even the curious person who wants a better understanding of retirement and pension plans.
I will always refer back to the two texts for all my finance needs.
Foundations of Financial Management, 10th Edition.......2003-09-28
Delivery was terrific. I received the book 6 days after I ordered it and it's brand new!
Very Good, But Not Excellent.......2002-07-12
As an undergrad taking his first finance class, I have have found this book to be quite useful. The concepts are explained in simplified, less-complicated ways and make reading each chapter less frustrating than perhaps some others (compared to some of the econ texts that I have had to use!).
It is well-written, concise, and employs some very straightforward, easy-to-follow graphs/diagrams. Also, both the formulas and the exercises at the end of each chapter are quite useful.
The only reason that I did not give it a 5-star rating is because some of the chapters did not use enough "real-world examples" or hypothetical situations in some of the more challenging lessons. This might better aid those students who are new to finance or simply need another angle to better grasp the idea.
A comprehensive, well-written finance textbook.......2002-03-02
This text is characterized by its extreme simplicty in explanation and presentation of its material. The flow of presenting the contents of each chapter is so sequentially logical that it makes the reader grasp the financial concepts very fast and effectively. Colorful illustrative diagrams are employed extensively to facilitate a high level of understanding and help the learner develop the necessary conceptual links between inter-related topics and items. In addition, it is very comprehensive and intensely supported with a "luggage" of real-life cases .I recommend this excellent text to everyone who needs to take an introductory course in corporate finance.
An excellent book for those who do not wish to learn finance.......2001-06-04
I used to be "illiterate" in terms of finance and I thought that this book would help me to comprehend the basic principles of corporate finance. Unfortunately, the content of this book is completely implicit. The authors wrote a book without taking into account the nature of the audience. Consequently, this book does not address to financial managers or to any kind of managers or even students. The only people who can really understand the content of this book is the authors themselves!
After having read many books regarding corporate finance and financial management, I have become familiar with this discipline. There are hundreds of well-structured remarkable books that you can purchase at a lower price...
Book Description
Foundations of Financial Management is a proven and successful text recognized for its excellent writing style and step-by-step explanations to make the content relevant and easy to understand. The text's approach focuses on the "nuts and bolts" of finance with clear and thorough treatment of concepts and applications. There is a strong real-world emphasis presented throughout. This text has definitely stood the test of time due to the authors' time, energy, and commitment to quality revisions. In addition to completing the textbook revisions, the authors also revised ALL end of chapter problems and complete the solutions themselves. Block and Hirt know what works and what doesn't work for students, and they have consistently maintained a high quality textbook that is responsive to the demands of the marketplace.
Book Description
âSomething big is about to happenâ¦.â
–From the Foreword by Don Box, Architect, Microsoft Corporation
âIf I were writing a Workflow book, this is what I would have written. The material is very well presented with code examples and explanations. Also, I love how the authors discuss the underlying architecture, enabling me to get a really deep understanding of the technology to efficiently design and build my own projects.â
–Jeffrey Richter (http://Wintellect.com)
âExplicit support for workflows in a lightweight framework is a major contribution. Many tough problems traditionally faced by application authors, such as state management in the presence of long-running activities (think weeks or months!), can be addressed systematically by adopting
a workflow approach. Dharma Shukla and Bob Schmidt present the workflow technology under and made accessible by the new workflow foundation in the .NET 3.0 framework, and they do so in an approachable and yet authoritative way that is truly enjoyable.â
–Clemens Szyperski, software architect, Microsoft Corporation
âThe Windows Workflow technology combines declarative programming and state machines in a very rich and powerful way, one that is bound to have a profound influence on the way we program in the coming years. In the style of the classic Essential COM by Don Box, Dharma and Bob have done a great job making this technology accessible to any developer already versed in C#, VB, and the .NET Framework, and who wants to achieve declarative enlightenment. Don’t miss out.â
–Joe Duffy, program manager, Common Language Runtime (CLR) team, Microsoft Corporation
âI think WF should and will be used as the main application model for web service applications. Developers working on web services will want to learn about this technology from this book; it comes straight from the source and explains the technology well and in depth.â
–Krzysztof Cwalina, program manager, Microsoft Corporation
âThis book provides an enlightening exploration of Windows Workflow Foundation for both the novice and the veteran alike.â
–Nate Talbert, software design engineer, Microsoft Corporation
Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is a groundbreaking approach to writing and executing programs. WF programs are assembled out of resumable program statements called activities, which provide encapsulation of both domainspecific logic and control flow patterns reflective of real-world processes.
In Essential Windows Workflow Foundation, two WF lead architects–Dharma Shukla and Bob Schmidt–offer an under-the-hood look at the technology, explaining the why and not just the how of WF’s key concepts and architecture. Serious WF developers seeking details about how to effectively utilize and extend the framework by writing activities will find cogent explanations and answers here. With simple and illustrative examples, the authors demonstrate exactly how to leverage WF’s extensible programming model to craft domain-specific programs. Drawing on their unique vantage point in designing and developing WF, Shukla and Schmidt deliver authoritative coverage of
-
The core concepts and ideas that form the heart of WF’s programming model
-
The execution model for activities, with details of the activity automaton, bookmarking, scheduling, and the threading model of the WF runtime
-
Advanced execution concepts, including activity execution contexts, transactions, persistence points, passivation, fault handling, cancellation, compensation, and synchronization
-
Hosting the WF runtime in applications
-
The activity component model, with details of validation, compilation, serialization, and visualization
-
Databinding, XAML, dependency properties, and WF program metadata
-
Declarative conditions and rules, activity designers, and designer hosting
-
Custom control flow patterns ranging from simple sequencing and iteration to more complex graphs and state machines
-
Dynamic editing of running WF program instances
Essential Windows Workflow Foundation is the definitive resource for developers seeking an in-depth understanding of this novel technology.
Dharma Shukla is an architect at Microsoft working on next-generation programming models. A founding member of the Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) team, Dharma played a key role in defining the architecture of WF.
Bob Schmidt is a senior program manager at Microsoft working on next-generation programming models. Since 2003, his primary focus has been on the design of WF. Both authors have been involved with the WF project since its inception, and have been responsible for specifying, designing, and developing large portions of the technology.

Spare me the vocabulary.......2007-09-24
Look, there are enough buzzwords that are ill-used in our "profession domain".
Passivate? Pedagogical? Episodic execution? Thread and process agility?
Enough. Enough. Enough.
When a book starts as oddly as this one did, the editors are using the wrong ruler to measure what valuable content should look like.
Essential (absolutely necessary; indispensable) information should not be "decorated" with such a mish-mash of terms stolen from other disciplines or made up for the sake of being unique.
Simply the best insider book.......2007-04-29
This is one of the best books I have read. It shows the real internal workings of WF and does so vividly. This is not a work-by-example book but a book everyone must own to learn the fundamentals. I didn't want to get spoiled by the Visual Designer in DevStudio simply because I wanted to know what's going on behind the curtain and this book definitely hit the spot. I would buy other books (probably Scott Allen's) for practical usages/learning by examples.
Indeed the MOST ESSENTIAL book on WF.......2007-04-27
Just as Kernighan-Ritchie wrote the book about "C" which laid the foundation to that language, this book is the "starting point" to learn the new paradigm of Workflow Programming. This book examines the WF "concepts" in a manner that build in steps, one concept at a time.
Most books try to give "everything" in "how to implement applications" fashion. But unless one gets a "conceptual understanding" of what the technology is, and why it is like that, it would be hard to "think with" that technology. One can "copy" other examples for rapid implementations, but one cannot "invent" solutions that apply to their own domain.
By reading this book one can really "invent" solutions to "any" domain one works in. Very well written book. I suspect Don Box played an important role in guiding the style of this book. Other subjects should also have such "essential" books available.
If you want to more than just use activities to build workflows..........2007-04-10
...then get this book. This is an excellent book by the creators of WF. I had been working on WF for a long time, not just by using activities, but building them. However, I never was really confident because while I understood the concepts of activitiy, designer, validator, persistence, I was unaware of many other concepts like what is the threading model (should I make my data structures used in my custom activities thread safe?), scheduler, xoml vs xaml, etc. I used to hit these concepts while designing activities and some runtime extensions and since I didn't completely know, I did not enjoy my work as much. Then this book is released. This book is exactly what I was looking for. Concisely written, but loaded in information. More importantly, it is comprehensive. As I read from chapter to chapter, all my fears about the concepts I only half-understood were replaced by the power of a holistic knowledge of WF I was gaining. There are other books out there which tell you what a CAG activity is and how to use it, but when you are done with that kind of stuff and you don't know where to look further, read this book. With zero exaggeration, I can say that after I read the book, my confidence increased so much that I look forward to work everyday more than ever before.
Excellent discussion of WF architecture.......2007-03-23
This book is one of the best written technical books I've read in the last several years. It is not a book to teach WF programming so much as a discussion of the architectural foundations of WF. The greatest benefit I gained from this book was that, even when I can't use WF itself, I can use some of the patterns that make WF possible. If you're an architect looking to gain a clear understanding of what WF is, and from that, what it can do, there is no better book than this one.

Solid Introduction to Law and Economics.......2003-07-19
In a sense, this book is quite curious. Because law and economics is a discipline in its infancy, a book of this nature has to tread the fine line between serving as a distanced text and engaging in the dialogue of current research. And in both respects, Cooter and Ulen do a magnificent job of doing just that.
Law and economics is a branch of jurisprudence that aims to frame legal questions in terms of economic efficiency. While some maintain that legal questions can purely be reduced to economic ones, Cooter and Ulen take - rightly, in my view - the more conservative stance that economics can describe at least part of the legal question. It turns out, however, that the methodologies presented in this book are useful in reducing most legal problems to ones of economic efficiency.
This is a textbook for beginners. It presupposes virtually no knowledge on economics or law -- a brief synopsis of microeconomics and English common law system is presented at the outset. The rest of the book utilizes economic methodologies in analyzing legal problems of property, contract, torts, common law and criminal law.
However, there is a caveat. As law and economics is a burgeoning and diverse field, many important details are omitted. Most notably, the distinction between different schools of law and economics is saliently missing. This book adopts the "Posnerian" or "Chicago" school of law and economics; that is, analyzing legal questions using the framework of wealth maximization. This scaffold is one of many schools of law and economics, including the "Virginia School" and the "Rochester School."
Taking this into note, however, does not mitigate this book's clarity or exposition. This is a solid although incomplete introduction to law and economics. Recommended.
Fast delivery and excellent quality..........2002-08-30
The book arrived really fast. It is brand new as promised. I am very satisfied.
Expensive, but a good investment.......2001-08-08
This is a nice textbook. If you're looking for a good introduction to the field of law and economics intermediate between Mercuro/Medema's _Economics and the Law_ (low brainstrain) and Thomas Miceli's _Economics of the Law_ (high brainstrain), this one is a good choice.
One of the things I especially like about Cooter and Ulen's approach is that they are careful _not_ to reduce law to economics (or vice versa, for that matter). Their claim is simply that law and economics have a lot to learn from one another. And this claim is hard to argue with, no matter what other criticisms I might make about some parts of the law-and-economics movement.
For example, people who work with the law may tend to think of law as a means (solely) of securing justice, unaware that law also provides a complex structure of what economists would call "incentives" which promote what economists would call "efficiency". On the other hand, economists may tend to take for granted the existence of such institutions as property rights and contracts, and the meaning of such terms as "voluntary." These things are not as simple as they appear (as any first-year law student could tell you, although lots of "pop libertarians" probably couldn't), and legal scholarship has developed a lot of machinery for dealing with them.
So this textbook, after a short opening chapter, devotes two not-overlong and altogether mainstream summary-and-overview chapters to, respectively, microeconomic theory and law. This means that a reader from either discipline can learn the basics of the other before proceeding to the meat of the analysis.
Then the real work starts. Cooter and Ulen do a thorough job of presenting, in a readable and accessible manner, the basics of the economic analysis of the law of property, torts, contracts, legal procedure, crime, and all the other neat stuff on which the law-and-economics movement has based its reputation -- i.e., the application of economic theory to the study of law beyond the traditional bounds of, e.g., antitrust and other areas of law directly concerned with economics.
It's designed to be eminently readable. Judgments like the one I'm about to render are notoriously subjective, but overall, the text strikes me as a good mix of clear expository prose, a well-chosen range of helpful examples, sound theory, and audience-appropriate mathematics (algebra and graphing). More advanced texts -- e.g. the aforementioned Miceli, and _Introduction to Law and Economics by A. Mitchell Polinsky -- are harder to read than this one unless you've got some math background. (Polinsky doesn't actually _use_ all that much math, but I think readers without some mathematical experience will find his book more difficult reading than this one.)
References abound; every chapter closes with at least a handful of them. So the text also doubles as a bibliography and introduction to what is rapidly becoming a vast literature.
If you're introducing yourself to the field, this book is a good investment. If you have a sufficiently strong background in mathematics, you _may_ be able to start with either Miceli or Polinsky (or both) and give this one a pass. But you'll miss a lot of helpful introductory discussion.
Besides, this book has been something of a classic in the field ever since it was first published. If you have any interest in this field at all, you'll probably want to pick up a copy eventually.
(It will probably _not_ help you much in law school, by the way, at least in the beginning. If you're just looking for an introduction to law and economics sufficient to get you started as a law student, I recommend Mercuro/Medema. You can go on to Posner and Landes and Shavell and Calabresi and the rest of them later.)
Book Description
This classic text takes an applied and computer-oriented approach to its topical coverage. The book is intended for one or two semester courses in biostatistics at the undergraduate or graduate level offered by departments of biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, nursing and other allied health disciplines, and is also used in some departments of forestry and animal husbandry. Nearly all the examples and exercises make use of real data from actual research projects and reports from health sciences literature. Where appropriate, Minitab, SPSS and SAS commands and printouts are included as part of the examples and solutions to exercises.

Helpful but technical.......2006-11-10
This book is extreamly helpful for academic research. It can be somewhat more technical than most people would need.
Not as impressive as I first thought.......2005-09-23
Daniel obviously knows his statistics; but, I wouldnt think that is too helpful for individuals reading or studying from his textbook.
The reasons are numerous, and all these reasons would reduce anyone's chances of solely using this book, or even using it at all.
The textbook is well organized, however Daniel's writing often is pedantic, repetitive (not in the helpful way) and ambiguous at best.
The examples and solutions occassionaly have serious errors in them which affect the overall outcome of the test (A second consideration is that the book is in it's 8th edition!!! therefore such errors are unacceptable for a person such as myself).
An example can be found on page 239 (example 7.3.2). The pooled variance, as calculated by Daniel is approximately off by 100 simply because he didnt give attention to dividing the numerator with the proper pooled D.F of the samples. The chapter ironically was on hypothesis tests, something extremely important to any line of empirically oriented statistics.
In Chapter 8; which is probably the most important chapter in Bistatistics (ANOVAs) he does not mention the relationship between MSW and sample SD. Also, his usage of Summation in formulas often are unnecessarily overcomplicated. Such is not even seen in professional journals.
I did like this textbook regardless of its many shortcomings, its not because I liked the author's style of writing. Its more or less the fact that my lecturer (I assume) used this book heavily in his lectures and so I used it as a supplementary text.
I would suggest, Chap T. Le's Introductory Biostatistics. However he goes too much into nonparametric methods and proportions and doesnt cocentration (to the degree I wanted) on continous data.
More robust and probably cost effect books are :Introductory Statistics for the Life Sciences by Samuels. But the Best book I have ever seen on the subject is "Introductory Biostatistics for the health sciences" By Chernick and Friis. The book is well priced and no portion of this book, I have seen as being useless.
Excellent Text for 2nd Statistics Class.......2004-10-25
I'm taking my first biostatistics class in medical school, but the text I am using in class (Rosner) has lost me. I subsequently borrowed Daniel's book from the library (only because it has 7th editions), and I am glad that I picked it! Daniel is a good writer. The book is well organized and laid out. Important concepts are emphased and explained with minimum mathematics involved. The well thought out examples are worth working through as well for clarification of the applications of important concepts. However, as a beginner in statistics, I was lost in the midst of mathematics on certain concepts (given that I have a relatively strong mathematics background) without really understanding the meaning of some very basic terms, like percentile, confidence intervals.
What I do is to read another reference book that explains the very basic concepts in plain English first before reading this text. I am currently using Munro's Statistical Methods for Health Care Research. While both of them cover the same set of concepts, Daniel gives me the mathematical and more advanced explainations compare to Munro.
Very Good.......2003-12-19
I have used this and other texts by Daniel over the years and I find you can not go wrong with his works. He is a no nonsense author and a very good writer who uses plenty of examples. Get his nonparametric book also.
Solid introductory reference.......2003-01-09
The title is very appropriate - this text provides a solid foundation in biostats. I used it for an intro course in grad school, and working through the text was very worthwhile. Previously cloudy concepts are now more clear, and I have a great reference for future use. More in-depth biostats deserves a consultation with a statistician, not a longer text. I agree with other reviewers that there are occasional mistakes (which need to be fixed - this is not even the first edition), but overall I would still highly recommend it.
Book Description
KEY BENEFIT: Keown allows readers to see the big picture by letting them understand the logic that drives finance rather than memorizing formulas. Very user friendly, the basic pedagogical approach to the presentation of new tools and techniques is âsay itâ then âillustrate it with an exampleâ and reinforce with lots of âreal world examplesâ.
As well as including strong international coverage some key topics are: Financial Markets and Interest Rates; Understanding Financial Statements and Cash Flows; Time Value of Money; Risk and Return; Bond and Stock Valuation; Capital-Budgeting Techniques and Practice; Cash Flows and Other Topics in Capital Budgeting; and Current Asset Management.
For an enduring understanding of the basic tools and fundamental principles upon which finance is based.
Book Description
Unlike books currently on the market, this book attempts to satisfy two goals: combine circuits and electronics into a single, unified treatment, and establish a strong connection with the contemporary world of digital systems. It will introduce a new way of looking not only at the treatment of circuits, but also at the treatment of introductory coursework in engineering in general.
Using the concept of ''abstraction,'' the book attempts to form a bridge between the world of physics and the world of large computer systems. In particular, it attempts to unify electrical engineering and computer science as the art of creating and exploiting successive abstractions to manage the complexity of building useful electrical systems. Computer systems are simply one type of electrical systems.
+Balances circuits theory with practical digital electronics applications.
+Illustrates concepts with real devices.
+Supports the popular circuits and electronics course on the MIT OpenCourse Ware from which professionals worldwide study this new approach.
+Written by two educators well known for their innovative teaching and research and their collaboration with industry.

tackles a conceptual discontuity.......2005-09-13
Agarwal and Lang offer a pedagogy to tackle a serious disconnect that often arises in this field. At the low level of physics and electrical engineering, the EE student learns of basic device physics of such circuit elements as a PN diode or a MOSFET. Everything here is inherently analog. So you get I-V curves that characterise the devices, say. The book gives this good coverage.
But it also addresses the longer distance scale, where these devices are connected into a circuit for digital electronics. It is here that the abstractions of Boolean algebra take hold. Vital in letting the student have a simple conceptual model, upon which can be built the entire panoply of computer science.
The merit of this book is in the care with which it addresses this conceptual discontinuity. Now, it might be argued that there is no such discontinuity. There is a logical rigour to all this, that long predates the book. True enough. But the pedagogic reality is that the teaching of electrical engineering and of computer science are all too often two separate disciplines. One analog, one digital. The student attempting to understand both can easily get confused, through no fault of her own. Hopefully, the didactic approach of the book can mitigate this unfortunate occurrence. It is useful that a few students, at least, should have a deep understanding of a seamless transition from nanoscale physics to software.

Great series for all levels!.......2007-01-11
I am bilingual and am raising my son bilingual, too. This is an excellent book and series with adorable pictures, and each page has both english and spanish on it. The back includes pronunciation guides for all the vocabulary (both for english and spanish) which is helpful for my husband, a non-native speaker. It's very hard to find quality bilingual books- I've looked around a lot and loved these so much I have even given them as gifts to friends who want to introduce their kids (and themselves) to the language.
GREAT book for early Spanish learning.......2006-07-04
Normally I would say that my daughter is a little old for this type of book. At 5 she is a bit beyond little board books without many words. But for laying a foundation for Spanish, this book is just what both she & I need. The simple sentences allow us to see what exactly each word means, as well as get an intuitive grasp on the grammer, and the pronunciation guide in the back is VERY helpfull.
I know that we will quickly move beyond this book, but for now I view it as essential for our grasping Spanish. In fact, I plan on buying the other books in this series.
My Family andI?Mi Familia Y Yo.......2002-10-22
This is another book that I enjoyed by this author. My children have asked me to continue to purchase this books and they read them all the time. I see the joy and excitement on their faces as they say different words in Spanish and actually know the meaning. I feel that it is important for the and myself to learn a second language, and books like these have been able to serve as a base for my entire family. It's easy to read and grasp, and a good reference to look at when necessary. Keep up the great work Gladys and I'll keep reading your books. Learning is a continuous process and now it's become really fun!

Foundation marks the first of a series of tales set so far in the future that Earth is all but forgotten by humans who live throughout the galaxy. Yet all is not well with the Galactic Empire. Its vast size is crippling to it. In particular, the administrative planet, honeycombed and tunneled with offices and staff, is vulnerable to attack or breakdown. The only person willing to confront this imminent catastrophe is Hari Seldon, a psychohistorian and mathematician. Seldon can scientifically predict the future, and it doesn't look pretty: a new Dark Age is scheduled to send humanity into barbarism in 500 years. He concocts a scheme to save the knowledge of the race in an Encyclopedia Galactica. But this project will take generations to complete, and who will take up the torch after him? The first Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) won a Hugo Award in 1965 for "Best All-Time Series." It's science fiction on the grand scale; one of the classics of the field. --Brooks Peck

Science-fiction classic.......2007-10-07
Definitely a must-read. The story gets better and better with each book. the ending is surprising :-)
amazingly imaginative.......2007-08-11
this book brings about grand ideas that did not exist before asimov explored them. the massiveness that asimov takes on is amazing, he explores 1000 years of the future. while it is difficult to keep track of the characters because of the jumps of 40 or 50 years at a time, the concept of this book is what makes it great. the notion of a galactic empire is amazing, and anyone who liked star wars has to admit that this book started it all. asimov was a great writer, perhaps the greatest sci fi writer ever.

The start of Asimov's highly influential groundbreaking future history series. The invention of the science of psychohistory captivated me the first time I read it. Basically, all those with an interest in SF should check this out.
Asimov's intro gives some history of the evolution of this series with his editor, Campbell, as well as some entertaining silliness by the publisher Doubleday. He tells how they wouldn't publish him at one time, and later on they are at his door, cap in hand asking for a new book.

A Psychohistorical Guide.......2007-07-25
Foundation (1951) is the first SF novel in the Foundation series. Although originally a series of novelettes published separately in Astounding, it was later combined into this novel.
"The Psychohistorians" (1950) was created as an introduction to the series with the publication of the Gnome press novel. It describes the political maneuvering by Hari Seldon to establish the Foundation on Terminus.
"The Encyclopedists" (1942) relates the first of the "Seldon Crises" when the Foundation is caught between the retreating empire and the growing Anacreon kingdom.
"The Mayors" (1942) tells of the second crisis when Wienis, the Prince Regent of Anacreon, decides to take over the Foundation.
"The Traders" (1944) depicts the third crisis after Askone arrests a Foundation agent trying to spread the Scientism religion.
"The Merchant Princes" (1944) recounts the fourth crisis when a Foundation trader discovers a market for his advanced technology devices.
Although the empire portrayed within this novel was actually based on the Roman empire, technology itself became a major force in the story. Thus, slavery was not a problem in this empire until it began to decline and lose its technology. This decline also allowed the Foundation to spread its influence through advanced technology.
When these stories were written, computers were only laboratory toys. Thus, the original Foundation series didn't incorporate computers as such. These stories seem strangely old-fashioned without household, business and embedded computers. Nonetheless, the author did foretell the use of electronic hand calculators.
The author did include computers in the robot stories written during this timeframe, but they were massive devices used in the factories to design and manufacture robots. The emphasis was upon positronic brains -- something like neural nets -- rather than true computers. Maybe our industry just hasn't yet caught up to his technological projections.
This novel is one of the most famous works of science fiction. While it describes future sciences far beyond current capabilities, it still inculcated a sense of the methodology underlying real science and technology. While the author went on to become a major writer of science fiction, he also became one of the best elucidators of popular science in the world.
Still, this tale contains all the flaws of Campbellian science fiction. The major characters are always male. The dialogue is somewhat stilted and old-fashioned. In addition, the story contains more ideas than action. Of course, this tale is also outdated because of all the imitations and stimulations resulting from it.
Highly recommended for Asimov fans and for anyone else who wants to read classic works of science fiction.

Great Book.......2007-07-25
This is a great book, not just a great sci-fi book. In fact, this story although set in the future is actually a study of human nature and destiny. It is extremely thought provoking and will be sure to have you turing the pages to read more.
Isaac Asimov is classed as a sci-fi writer, but he should really be thought of a social historian/philosopher. I guarantee that you will enjoy this book.
