Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the Egyptian mysteries........2001-09-07

Unlike most of Budge's other works, this is written for the layman to understand. Though he still cannot resist showing off his skills as a scholar, one doesn't need a vast knowledge of Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, and Arabic alphabets to gain the book's full value (I often wonder if at some point in his career Budge didn't "sell out," writing books that people outside Oxford and Cambridge would want to read.). Virtually every amulet and talisman is covered, along with their proper use and materials they were made from. As always, the introduction and stories Budge gives are fascinating as well, giving tales not generally told in modern times and the various mechanics of how the Egyptian priests and magicians performed their magic. One can see why Budge's work is still in print, as he offers the reader a maximum of research and scholarship with none of the new-age BS that is so common in such books written today.

3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2000-03-06

Obviously this book is not a complete record of the uses, and sources. When taken in the context that the author is writing at the end of the Victorian era(source of all the thees an thous in the translation) and that the English, at least at that time, had most of the artifacts, the book is really good for giving a feeling of how Egyptian "stuff" fit into the world structure at that point in time. (remember the writer is a "Sir" an part of the citadel gang). Sometimes the errors in earlier works provide greater insight than facts. (most religions) Aside from the "stiff upper lip" the reader found the book fun. And if you wanted to get Jungian how the four sons of Horus coincide with the psyco analytic stuff and the 4 goveners in Mayan mythology provide and interesting comparison.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but Interesting.......1999-11-09

This book was originality published in 1901 in a series called "Books on Egypt and Chaldaea". Needless to say, the information in this book is quit outdated. There are numerous errors in the text and some quite obvious. With that said, I think the book was interesting, and especially like the explanation of some of the spells in the "Egyptian Book of the Dead".

5 out of 5 stars To be read with its companion.......1998-04-08

To get complete satisfaction from this book you need to read it along with its companion book Egyptian Religion. These two books together go a lot further in explaining the myths, the reasons for and the usage of Egyptian artefacts than many other books which would cost you twice as much for half the pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for........2006-01-02

I absolutely love this book! She gives you lots of facts about how the original priests worshiped Isis and then gives you advice on how to use that in a modern way. Oodles of stuff to keep you active like recipes, rituals, great chants, meditations and how to craft your own ritual tools. Truly a great and essential book if you are drawn to Isis and are looking for a way to bring more of Her into your life.

5 out of 5 stars Truely magical in all respects!.......2005-08-23

I absolutely adore this book! It is basically a handbook for Egyptian devotees who have an affinity for Isis as the great Mother. It is well researched but not too scholarly or longwinded like most books on the subject.

Within are charming rituals, recipies for making natron(special bath),ritual tools, how to make a shrine to Isis, healing rites, dinner recipies, virtually everything under the sun about this multi purpose diety! It is all done with great love and devotion to Isis.

It is true there is not much else about the other gods of Egypt but it says right on the cover-Mysteries of Isis! This is all about the great mother, who faithfully answers most cries. I cannot think of any other goddess who was so revered in popular Western society since Roman times. Maybe the virgin Mary? who is really an emanation of Isis. I remember being in Paris at the old Roman site of her temple, now a Christian church. Her presence was still very strong!

It is easy to see how this goddess is so accesible to many, pagan or otherwise. She is truely the springtime of the human heart! Also within is the first incarnation of the scarab oracle. This is a very special connection to the mother for those who cannot hear her soft voice already...

2 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Isis, Terrible for all others.......2003-09-23

In looking for books on Egypt, I had thought this would help. If I was an Isis worshiper, this would have been an invaluable resource in my libary. I recommend this book for all who wish to devote only to Isis.

However, to anyone else looking for information on any other God/dess or Egypt itself, this book is sorely lacking. Osiris, Horus, Re and other male gods were hardly mentioned except in cursory references to Isis. Hathor, Nebt-het, Sekmet/Bast and other Goddesses were demeaned only as aspects of Isis rather than the true Goddesses they are. In this and the History of Egypt, this book is lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what Great Source Book on all things Isis.......2002-11-15

If you like all things Isis and if you are interested in learning her Mysteries, Festivals, Magick, and New forms of Divination, this is the Book you need for your Library..She really gives some very true statements regarding initation and What it means to be a Priestess of Our Most Holy Queen Isis!

This is one of my favorate books about the worship of Isis. The Aurthor is very close to her subject. She mixes history, current thougths, and her own ideas very well. The book is set up as hours of the day, and include sections on divination, meditations, healing, etc. It also makes a great reference book.

Book Description

The religious and magical practices of the ancient Egyptians have had a profound and lasting effect on the world. Egypt has been described as the "mother of magicians". To appreciate the Egyptian view of magic, we need to accept that to the Egyptians magic was not considered strange or eccentric, but was a part of daily life, to which everyone resorted. Magic blended seamlessly with religion and medicine, being seen as part of a holistic worldview. In this volume these magical and religious practices are explored, from both a historical and practical perspective. The practices are explored from an ancient Egyptian worldview, taking into consideration that the Egyptian culture spread over a period of more than 3000 years. The Egyptians saw the universe as being made of four worlds - the everyday world we live in, the underworld, the sky and the heavens. Subject covered in this book include: -What is Heka? -Ancient Egyptian Worldviews -The Gods and Goddesses of Magic -Symbolism - Colours & Sacred Numbers -The Tools Used -Sacred Words & Gestures -Statues & Masks -Crystals & Other Materials used in Heka -Incenses & Perfumes -Food & Wine used in Offerings & at Feasts -The Ancient Egyptian Magical Calendar -Purification, Sacred Space & Rituals David Rankine is based in London (UK) and is a respected authority on spiritual & magical practices. He is the author of many books, including Climbing the Tree of Life, Circle of Fire & The Guises of the Morrígan. This book, HEKA - The Practices of Ancient Egyptian Magic, is the result of careful research & practical work and is highly recommended to students wishing to pursue practical work within this system.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not really worth it - A Priestess Of Isis.......2006-10-08

I was really excited about ordering this book, but when it came i was dissapointed before i opened it. It was this tiny, skinny little package. I opened it and read it in about an hour. It has bits and pieces of useful and NON-redundant information but not worth the almost thirty dollars. What a rip off.

The author also was severly biased toward the goddess Maat, and he was rather incorrect with his descriptions about the god/desses. I dont think he had his facts straight either. He gives a slight feeling that Maat is more important than any other god (and also provides more ritual for her), and he also portrays Isis as a conniving, tricking, she-devil. And anyone who knows Her knows it is quite the opposite. (Not to get off subject, but i highly recommend the book "Isis Magic" by M. Isidora Forrest. It talks about the real egyptian magic and a lot of hard work was done so she could get accurate historical information. It has alot about Ancient Egypt in it.)

All in all, the book had very slim pickins. It had small tidbits here and there of good info. The only thing i found to be of great value was the tables he has about the correspondances of the god/desses. Like colors and vegetables. But there werent that many god/desses he had in his book. He has very little rituals (i think 3) and doesnt go into spells really. I recommend "Ancient Egyptian Magic and Divination", "Egyptian Paganism for beginners", and Rosemary Clarks "Sacred Magic Of Ancient Egypt." And if you care "Circle Of Isis", because the info isn't really Isis-y that much at all. It has INVALUABLE information about most of the panthenon.

Dont buy this book. Rent it from the library. I would have returned it, but thats a hassle and I'm a book pack-rat. Seriously not worth more than $10.00. All of the info you could EASILY find on the internet.

I hope this review will help you, and i know its a contrast to the first one, but i didnt think it was fair of that review. (I seriously think that Daivd Rankine or one of his pals wrote it) Because of the first good review i thought this would be an awesome book. (if you dont know anything about Ancient Egypt, i guess it'd be okay. But take it with a grain of salt) And its nowhere near awesome. Take my word for it. Spend your money on better books. You can email me if you'd like at vampirefamine@comcast.net. Thanks, Happy Amazoning.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Book at last!.......2006-04-19

Like with with many of David Rankine's books this book is packed with well researched, sound historical and practical information. If you are a neo-pagan fluffy looking for a book telling you that Isis is great or that Sekhmet is the only Goddess worth calling upon, this book is not for you.

If however, you are looking for something from which to draw both inspiration and information for your magickal and spiritual work with the Egyptian Gods, using ceremonies, techniques and spells as they were performed by the Ancient Egyptian people (rather than the romantic views held by some neo-pagans in regards to the temple religions of Egypt) then you will love this book and find it to be an invaluable source.

"The influence of Egyptian magic has persisted through to the present day" (from the author introduction) a true enough statement, which in its own way encapsulates the value of this book.

In my opinion, there are many who would benefit from reading this book and having it to hand as a reference work when writing and researching ceremonies.

Rankine includes a great deal of information on useful correspondences, including food, minerals, crystals etc. There is no padding in this book, the information is provided in a straight forward way without the need for embelishment and speculation.

For me this book deserves ***** stars as this is the type of book I would like to see more of in the magickal / pagan market today. There are too many books providing speculative and inspired material as fact, leading to misinformation being perpetuated as fact. It is refreshing to be able to read a book which is different and which looks at the historical information, academic research, as well as practical aspects of the Egyptian world with fresh eyes.

The bibliography, nearly 6 pages of type, illustrates the level of research which went into producing this work. The author's passion for the mysteries of the ancient Egyptian spiritual path is clear throughout. His emphasis on the much neglected, but very important Goddess of Truth and Balance, shows that he has grasped the deeper mysteries of the tradition. The latter will also be of interest to those persuing an interest in the Golden Dawn and Thelemic traditions of Magick.

The book is illustrated with some line drawings and is presented in a format which makes it easy to find what you are looking for.

A most excellent book, yet again! Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for the curious.......2007-09-03

Although some of its suggestions and theories would appear to be outdated, it is an excellent work and will drive the curious to seek out more information on the varied subjects it covers beneath the umbrella of Semetic magic as traced or linked to older sources and its influence over various cultures and religous ideologies.

It is filled with accounts of ghuls, ghosts, demons and gods. It roams amidst their horrid habitations and divulges some of their strange and terrible secrets whilst giving the wary some ideas of ancient protective measures against them. It covers many of the concepts of demonic possesion amoungst the ancients and expands on curious myths you may have seen only hints of through the Quran, Tanak or Christian bible. It is a great source for myths and magical details including an Assyrian ritual that would seem to be an ancient origin for the modern concept of the Qabbalistic Cross Ritual, the idea of laying on of hands in faith healing and the concept of a guardian being. To quote:

"Unto the house on entering
Samas (is) before me,
Sin (is) behind [me],
Nergal (is) at [my] right hand,
Ninib (is) at my left hand;
When I draw near unto the sick man,
When I lay my hand on the head of the sick man,
May a kindly Spirit, a kindly Guardian, stand at my side."

The quote above is one of many very interesting bits of information contained in this book. I recommend it highly.

Book Description

The Egyptians were famous in the ancient world for their knowledge of magic. Religion, medicine, technology, and what we would call magic coexisted without apparent conflict, and it was not unusual for magical and "practical" remedies for illness, for example, to be used side by side. Everyone resorted to magic, from the pharaoh guarding his country with elaborate magical rituals to the expectant mother wearing amulets to safeguard her unborn child. In this book, Geraldine Pinch examines the connections between myth and magic and the deities--such as the goddess Isis, and the protective lion-demon Bes--who had special magical importance. She discusses the techniques of magic, its practitioners, and the surviving magical texts, as well as the objects that were used in magic: figurines, statues, amulets, and wands. She devotes a chapter to medicine and magic and one to magic and the dead. Finally, Dr. Pinch shows how elements and influences from Egyptian magic survived in or were taken up by later societies, right down to our own century.

5 out of 5 stars Without a Doubt the best book by Geraldine Pinch!.......2006-04-19

If you are interested in the magical practices of ancient egypt from a historical perspective you can do no wrong to purchase this book. Your copy, like mine, is likely to be leafed through time and time again.

This is a brilliant book and the information and illustrations throughout makes it easy to read and follow, unlike some books which seem to be a bit over the top on trying to sound clever. This book is CLEVER. If you are looking for something a bit more practical, you may want to check out David Rankine's HEKA, which was recently published in the UK. But for theory and context, this book by Geraldine Pinch is the greatest!

Very much highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Nicely Done.......2003-03-29

Lovely pictures, well-written prose, but organizationally not very exciting. It's written for the non-practitioner (which I am), but lacks the imagination of other books on the same subject.

5 out of 5 stars Magic in Ancient Egypt.......2002-05-12

I found this book very informative and interesting. As a practioner of Egyptian Magic and an Anthropology/Archology student,I found it easy to read, and it covers all aspects of Egyptian Magic. Ms.Pinch uses different texts to back up what she writes about. If you are looking for written ritual it's not in the book, but the information is there for you to write your own if you wish.I highly recomend this book to any one interested in Egyptian Magic.Ms.Pinch shows Egypt as it was a civilization which showed no distinction between everyday life and magic.

5 out of 5 stars Egyptian magic= Egyptian religion.......2000-02-25

A wonderful book on how the people of ancient Egypt viewed the world around them and the ways they sought to cope. Religion and magic are intertwined in the ancient world, as were magic and medicine. A good book for both the casual reader and the researcher. Full of fascinating bits of information, yet easily understandable. If you're interested in life in ancient Egypt, this book belongs on your bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, good writing, easy to understand.......1997-12-30

Pinch delivers a solid book explaining the practical aspects of Ancient Egyptian magic. The book is written so that both an academic and a "normal" ;-) person can easily understand the thought behind the magic.
Check out the terrifying love spell!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but..........2007-06-06

The single handedly the best book I have ever read. But why has the cost been so inflated over retail? I have visited Amazon to replace mine which has signs of heavy use, but I am not paying double and triple the retail price. I will buy directly from Llewellyn or at a local book store. Dont pay over $29.95!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Misleading.......2006-04-16

After reading this book, I was left a little confused. It is a good book, but the names are hellenized, the practices greatly altered, and it is just about the gods and goddesses, it does not contain a lot of the information that someone looking for a genuine egyptian spiritual practice is looking for. This does not contain a great deal of the medu neter of the egyptian spiritual practice, not to mention anything about the nome spirits, the cosmological resonance, the difference between egyptian and wiccan elemental/directional correspondences. If you are looking to worship the egyptian pantheon with a wiccan devotional system, this is an exce;;ent book, is you are interested in the actual beliefs of the egyptians and how to authentically recreate their spiritual practices, I would highly recommend The Sacred Magic of Ancient Egypt, and The Esoteric Wisdom of Ancient Egypt, both by Rosemary Clark, when I received these 2 books, and read them, I was bowled over by how interesting and informative they are.

4 out of 5 stars Great Informative Work.......2006-03-11

In all this book was very well researched and written. The only complaint I have is that not many rituals were included.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE!.......2005-08-24

EGYPTIAN PAGANISM FOR BEGINNERS by Jocelyn Almond and Keith Seddon is an excellent resource for pagans who are drawn to the Egyptian path. Other reviews seem to be fixated on the title "for beginners" and it is a mistake to rate this book on whether or not it lives up to its title, especially since it is often publishers, not authors, that determine a book's title.

The first section of this book is appropriate for readers who consider themselves pagan already, or for those who have a basic understanding of pagan ways. It is not realistic for a reader who has no knowledge of polytheism to pick up this book and think that in 300 pages they will have a complete understanding of paganism or the very complex concepts of Egyptian religion. This book is definitely geared at those who consider themselves pagan and wish to further their understanding of Egyptian ways.

The second section of the book is an encyclopedia of the most important Egyptian deities. Each chapter on each deity explains his or her basic attributes and how each deity fits in as an aspect of one Supreme Being. I considered myself reasonably aware of the Egyptian deities and their roles before reading this book, however this book very much enhanced that knowledge. I have filled the book with highlighting and I know I will continue to refer to it for years to come.

Thank you Jocelyn and Keith for an invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Egyptian Paganism for Beginners.......2005-04-14

I found this work to be very easy to understand. It holds a wealth of information
on the Egyptian religion, their gods and their rites and rituals. The authors have made
the information accessible to all who want to follow the pagan rites of the Egyptians.I found the work easy to understand and filled with sharp insight into the heart of
Egyptian paganism and magic. I recommend this book to anyone starting out on the Egyptian path
as well as any general student of the occult as this work makes an excellent addition to the
occult library.

Book Description

Every aspect of ancient Egyptian society-from education and law to medicine, birth, and death-was permeated by religion and magic, and dominated by divine life forces of the sun and the Nile. In this fascinating work, Rosalie David reveals the complex and intriguing world of gods and goddesses, tracing the history of Egyptian faith practices from the civilization's beginning through its growth into an empire and its later years as a Roman province. Concluding with a glossary and including new translations of Egyptian spells, this is an essential work for students, scholars, or anyone fascinated by the ancient world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dry and scholarly but extremely fascinating.......2007-07-23

I've never been a fan of history, mostly because it's a very one-sided thing, the way it's taught in schools and colleges for the most part; secondly, I get bored quite easily with "dry" subjects. This book is no exception, because it really is dry, and it is scholarly; however, the subject matter alone is why I read it. The more I've been reading it (and I am almost finished), the more fascinating it becomes. I think this book is so in-depth and well-researched, and the author really knows their material.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Comprehensive and Informative for the General Reader.......2006-03-09

I have not finished reading this book yet, but I am impressed by the ease and fluidity with which Ms. David imparts her information about ancient Egyptian culture. It is surprisingly easy to read and understand, yet not overly simplified. She has the gift of being able to express herself simply and succinctly--a rarity among academics. The title to me is a little misleading in the respect that the book focuses on so much more than that--although as Egyptian culture was based on its religion, perhaps not. Anyway, if you have been looking for a book to give you a broad, general understanding without boring you to tears, I heartily recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, but not for the basic reader.......2005-08-25

This book is full of interesting facts and data on the full scope of Ancient Egyptian history. More of a scholarly work than an easy read, but very useful for researchers and history buffs. I was a bit disappointed with the book, since many facts were presented with little or no explanation. Overall, worth the time to read.

Book Description

As early as 4000 B.C., ancient Egyptians wove magic and religion into whole cloth, wrapping themselves in ritual and symbolism that ranged from simple charms and protective hieroglyphs, to the towering monuments to immortality that are the pyramids of the Nile Valley. The rich religion and mythology of ancient Egypt is vividly documented here, with descriptions of the panoply of deities and their complex hierarchy, along with comprehensive explanations of the sacred oils, crystals and plants used in the many rituals that were an integral part of everyday life. Natural healing, magic, power animals, chants, prayers, and the Pyramids are covered in detail, backed by the author's unparalleled access to rare manuscripts and original images taken from Britain's National Witchcraft Museum.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars it's ok..........2003-08-02

Wasn't what I hoped. As a devotee of Isis, I was disappointed to see that this book barely mentioned the Knot of Isis, which is a shame because the Knot of Isis is such a huge part of Egyptian magic and religion. There seems to be more stories and myths behind the charms and spells in here rather than the actual application. There's also not that much on ritual, which is another big part of Egyptian magic and religion. I think what bothered me most was the reference to crystals for healing, which seems too New Ageish.
