5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction .......2007-07-08

Dr. Rohlf's text is a wonderful introduction and reference for anyone interested in understanding and applying the fundamentals of microeconomics. Rohlf provides real world discussion of what is usually presented as abstract. This text provides sound basics of strategy analysis.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Economic text which lacks important details........1999-10-15

I would reccomend this textbook for students or someone who is just begining economics. This book is for the most part easy to follow. It gives basic concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics. However, more pedagogy is needed in some chapters as well as with explanations.

    Book Description

This volume will be of interest and value to students of logic, ethics, and political philosophy, as well as to members of the legal profession and to everyone concerned with problems of government and jurisprudence. By citing a large number of cases, the author makes his presentation of the processes of judicial interpretation particularly lucid.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite an Introduction.......2007-06-16

While Levi clarifies much that's uncertain about legal interpretation, I don't recommend this book for those with no previous studies in law. If you must read it -- and there ARE rewards from doing so -- be sure to have a law dictionary at hand.

Besides using legal terms that aren't explained, Levi's prose is so dense as to be almost unreadable, but worse, it lacks anything resembling clarity. He often barges straight in to lengthy analyses of concepts without explaining the basic terms he uses or even why they're relevant; these must be induced from the text while reading. Since Levi is usually demonstrating through examples how concepts change over time, however, it's difficult to pin down what the concept means at any one point, before Levi has already jumped ahead to the next point without explaining either.

It's also highly recommended that you look up the cases Levi cites, since his quotations from judges rarely contain enough critical information to piece together the actual concept involved. Finding the original and just reading the parts that he replaced with ellipses add an infinite degree of clarity.

    4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2006-06-20

I found this book to be helpful but somewhat basic. I is outlined nicely and is easy to follow. Good future reference. Recommend to students.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2006-01-07

I appreciate Edward Levi's attention to detail. This book definitely goes beyond the standard textbook in terms of putting together a guide that is both interesting to read and informative. I'd recommend it to anybody in my situation, planning to attend law school, or even to practicing attorneys in need of a handy, compact reference guide to the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Law of the land.......2005-04-01

The power to determine the law of the land resides within every citizen of the country by means of electing the officials they choose and the judicial system only upholds the law. The citizens of a country elect their leaders and once elected they are enshrined with the right to uphold the economic and political stability but any improper actions of a government should be corrected by means of the judicial process rather than by any political process. All differing opinions should be allowed to coexist with checks and balances as determined by the judicial system.

5 out of 5 stars ambiguity made clear.......2002-08-17

Legal reasoning is famously ambiguous: there's no objective way to determine the outcome of a given case as there is with a physics problem. If you know the weight of an item and the height from which it drops, you are able to determine fairly objectively (i) the rate at which it will fall to the earth and (ii) the time it will take to fall to the earth from the point at which it is dropped. Law, unfortunately, is not so straight-forward. Understanding its assumptions is absolutely critical to developing any sort of sophisticated understanding about the ways in which law affects civilization. This book provides a broad outline of those assumptions. I suggest having at least a rudimentary background in intellectual history and political philosophy to get the most out of this book.

I'm biased. This is the sort of thing U.S. schools should require. Can't go wrong with this. This has 2X as much as "How to Read @ Do Proofs" (Daniel Solow). Wich is better? No Answr. I Luv em both. Former is more expository the other more mechanical. Go For It! Recomended.

This book is excellent! It chapters are broken down into short sections and the content in each section is to the point! I also bought the book Proofs and Fundamentals by Ethan D. Bloch but found it to be long and drawn out. If you liked The Nuts and Bolts of Proofs by Antonella Cupillari then this book is for you!

I have a mathematics degree. Like most math majors, I struggled with proofs all through college. This book really has help me understand the art of writing proofs. The book is very well written and easy to read. This is just an awesome book!!!

This book provides a nice introduction to mathematical reasoning and proofs. My intention on purchasing this book was to learn how to perform mathematical proofs. I believe it has achieved that purpose. The text is easy to follow and the author presents the work clearly.

    Book Description

Extensively classroom-tested, Critical Thinking: An Introduction to Analytical Reading and Reasoning provides a non-technical vocabulary and analytic apparatus that guide students in identifying and articulating the central patterns found in reasoning and in expository writing more generally. Understanding these patterns of reasoning helps students to better analyze, evaluate, and construct arguments and to more easily comprehend the full range of everyday arguments found in ordinary journalism. Critical Thinking distinguishes itself from other texts in the field by emphasizing analytical reading as an essential skill. It also provides detailed coverage of argument analysis, diagnostic arguments, diagnostic patterns, and fallacies. Opening with two chapters on analytical reading that help students recognize what makes reasoning explicitly different from other expository activities, the text then presents an interrogative model of argument to guide them in the analysis and evaluation of reasoning. This model allows a detailed articulation of "inference to the best explanation" and gives students a view of the pervasiveness of this form of reasoning. The author demonstrates how many common argument types--from correlations to sampling--can be analyzed using this articulated form. He then extends the model to deal with several predictive and normative arguments and to display the value of the fallacy vocabulary. Designed for introductory courses in critical thinking, critical reasoning, informal logic, and inductive reasoning, Critical Thinking features hundreds of exercises throughout and includes worked-out solutions and additional exercises (without solutions) at the end of each chapter. An Instructor's Manual, including solutions to the text's unanswered exercises and featuring other pedagogical aids, is available.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text.......2004-09-02

I have used this text in my own critical thinking course over a dozen times. The text may be more challenging than others, but it is also more rewarding. The emphasis of the text is on developing our linguistic skills to be on par with our already-developed reasoning skills. This makes us more reflective, and more articulate, reasoners. The book uses examples culled from newspapers which makes for engrossing student activities. This also helps students see the relevance of applying the material outside the classroom.

One note of caution on the printing: If possible, buy the third printing (or any printing beyond the third). The first two have several compositing errors which seemed to have slipped by the copy editors. Though these don't detract from the reading of the text, they can be slightly distracting in the learning process.

3 out of 5 stars Poor on evidence and reasoning.......2007-09-12

Not bad for an introductory text. However, short on the following: it does not present argumentation as a process. Or, at least it is not entirely clear on it. The process is lost in the details. Second, it has poor chapters on reasoning and evidence. It does not really explain what evidence is for. For example, the chapter on evidence (after a brief definition of evidence) begins with a statement that evidence can be found in the library etc. It completely misses the point of the importance of evidence. Later in the text it returns to some of the important points but treats them rather poorly.
The part on reasoning is very poor. Although a knowledgeable person could easily distinguish what is proper reasoning and what can serve as a rhetorical device, that may not be clear to a beginning college student.

      5 out of 5 stars A Quality Product.......2006-03-20

This is a great intro to argumentation, and is useful to people of all ages and degrees of experience.

        Book Description

"What sets this book apart is its skillful integration of both the scientific and artistic dimensions of qualitative research."

--From the foreword by Michael Quinn Patton, author of Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods, Third Edition

"This is one of the best books I've found for introductory or intermediate qualitative research courses. I have taught this course using this text and the students really raved about it. In particular, the way the text handles issues of data collection, the role of qualitative research, and data analysis are extremely well done. I highly recommend this text as one of the most accessible yet sophisticated books on qualitative research that I've been able to use in my courses. This is an excellent resource that all new qualitative researchers should have on their bookshelf."

--Alison A. Carr-Chellman, Instructional Systems, Penn State University

"This is a clearly written and straightforward introduction to qualitative research. The central themes of the book--that qualitative research is learning and qualitative researchers are learners--move the text beyond the 'how to do it' in ways that can be helpful for 'seasoned' qualitative researchers as well as beginners. Thinking about qualitative research as a process of learning--about social phenomena, about participants, about oneself--is a very powerful pedagogical and methodological approach."

--Elizabeth J. Whitt, College of Education, University of Iowa

The popular text that helped readers better understand and practice qualitative research has been completely updated and revised while retaining the features that made the First Edition so useful.

        New to this edition:

To help readers better visualize and grasp the concepts, issues, and complexities of qualitative inquiry, the authors introduce each chapter with discussions among three "characters"--students whose research projects demonstrate the challenges and excitement of qualitative research. Woven into the chapters and the characters' stories are three themes that make up the tapestry of qualitative research: First, research is a learning process. Second, research can and should be useful. Finally, a researcher needs to have a clear vision of the audience and purpose of a study.

        Also added to this edition:

"Through the perspectives of three students learning about qualitative research, Rossman and Rallis provide an introductory overview of the subject in a clear and direct style with some excellent recommendations for planning the study."

--Johnny Saldana, Theatre Department, Arizona State University

This ideal introduction to theory explains what theory is, how theory is used in professional nursing and encourages students to develop reasoning skills and incorporate abstract ideas into practice. The Second Edition introduces more research concepts throughout and an increased international perspective of nursing theory. Case studies are incorporated to demonstrate how theory relates to the practice of nursing and how theory and reasoning are interrelated.

          Book Description

Do other people's arguments tie you in knots? Do you lack the confidence in your ability to reason? Do you assume that everything written in newspapers must be true?

We all engage in the process of reasoning, but we don't always pay attention to whether we are doing it well. This book offers the opportunity to practice reasoning in a clear-headed and critical way, with the aims of developing an awareness of the importance of reasoning well, and of improving the reader's skill in analyzing and evaluating arguments.

In this second edition of the highly successful Critical Reasoning , Anne Thomson has updated and revised the book to include new and topical examples which will guide students through the processes of critical reasoning in a clear and engaging way.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Critical Thinking Text.......2004-03-14

This is an excellent text for learning critical thinking. The book as a whole is well organized and very clear, and each chapter contains numerous well-designed exercises. Many of the exercises are taken from the arguments section of the Law School Admissions Test, so if you are planning to take the LSAT, this would make an excellent prep book.
