Not only does Ms. Liebeler give simple and easy to follow instructions for doing many at home projects, she writes as if she's talking to one of her good friends. A very easy to read and understand book! I probably will buy a copy for myself as well.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cookie cookbook............2001-09-29

......with lovely photos and great recipes.

The biscotti recipes are not only great, they present a good variety of biscottis that I've never tried before: Pine Nut and Honey Biscotti, Pistachio and Orange Biscotti, and Almond, Lemon and Anise Biscotti. All tasted wonderful and really impressed my family!

The remainder of the cookbook is divided into bar, drop and specialty cookie recipe sections and I have found recipes that kids love (Peanut and Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies), recipes that intrigued me (Walnut-Cardamom Viennese Crescents), recipes that were a sure thing at family gatherings or parties at work (White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Blondies, especially whe served still slightly warm). I could go on and on, but you get my drift. This cookbook is loaded with wonderful, treasured cookie and biscotti recipes and I highly recommend it!!

The biscotti recipes in the book are the best I have ever tried! The orange pistachio biscotti is always a crowd pleaser. Easy to follow directions and wonderful photos! You will get lots of use year round out of this cookbook.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-01-08

This is a wonderful small cook book of only biscotti recipes. I have one for myself and have given three as gifts. My Sicilian mom always asks me to bring the "Tuscan" biscotti (from page 13) to holiday dinners at her house. I tried one of the chocolate versions made by my neighbor who also owns the book and they were outstanding. For ten dollars you get a great varitey of recipes which are easy, and don't call for ingredients which are too fancy or hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars Simply orgasmic dunking delights!!!.......2006-09-15

If you're looking for biscotti recipes, this is the very best collection around. As usual Lou Pappas does not disappoint. I've seen other collections, both in books and online, and they don't even come close to these.

I've tried virtually all the recipes and they've all turned out to be authentic tasty little morsels! When I bring them to work or to a party or as a gift, people are amazed. For some strange reason, everyone begs me to give them the recipe for the Orange Chocolate Nut biscotti. I guess it's the vote winner.

This book costs so little (especially the used editions) that there's no reason to deny yourself this little gem. Just remember, don't skimp on the vanilla, citrus zest, etc. and DO NOT use rancid nuts. I always use a good quality chocolate when I make mine, and I always bake with unbleached flower but that does not affect these recipes luckily. So, go ahead and bake...you seriously cant buy biscotti this good.

FYI: Biscotti is Italian for "twice baked" and is a plural word. If you just order one of them, then the proper word is "biscotto" (single, masculine). No such thing as "have a biscotti".

5 out of 5 stars Biscotti Made Easy.......2006-01-15

Biscotti by Lou Seibert Pappas and biscotti from the recipe book were a gift from a cousin. The delicious recipes and the ease of making them, inspired me to send both biscotti and the book, Biscotti, as Christmas gifts this year. All the recipents declared the gift the best ever; not one crumb was left. I highly reccommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Molto Buono!.......2004-04-27

After trying several recipes from the book, The 50 Best Biscotti Recipes, and not liking them, I purchased this book and am in biscotti heaven! I just ate a slice of Biscotti Nocciole-Cioccolato, and it is excellent. I could dip this in melted chocolate, too! I baked Biscotti Toscani and Double Chocolate Decadence (with expresso coffee,) and both were mouth watering. Some of the prep time is lengthy, for I like quick and easy. But grating the zest of an orange, toasting the nuts, or making a little expresso is well worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Biscotti and easy to make.......2004-02-23

This a great book. The recipes are easy and the results are great. The cookies are not hard like the store bought ones. You can actually eat them without dunking them in coffee. I make them every Christmas as gifts and everyone loves them.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing Book on a Great Equine artist.......2004-08-24

I ordered this book sight unseen when it first came out. I was hoping for what is expected in a book about artists -- lots and lots of examples of the artist's work. So I was a very disappointed. It's a nice biography if you like to read, but if you like to turn the pages to be awed by equine art, don't buy this book. This author did not do justice to this famous equine artist.

3 out of 5 stars Great artist, disappointing book.......2004-07-20

If you're a collector of Paul Brown art, this book is a must have. But it's very disappointing and vague in details. Books are cataloged by author and include publisher, date, #pp, dust jacket info, and a 1-liner of story. But the most needed feature is the art and the description is limited to 'black and white illustrations.' No mention pencil, pen, dry brush, or if there's drawings on every page or just a few. There's also very few examples of the art when the author could have attained permission to show an example from each book. The book does show aquatints and Brooks Bros. clothing ads, of secondary interest.
There is nice bio info. It is incredulous to learn the Paul Brown never rode a horse, yet no one can capture horse and rider like he can! (As long as the rider is a male!!).

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas but lacks what's needed to follow thru.......2007-05-03

Although this book has many cute ideas, it has a resource guide in the back that gives the website or name of only a fraction of the products. I wanted to be able to find the brand and paint color names used as well as a specific bumper and sheet set in a bedroom that would have gone perfectly in the room I'm designing and none of that information was not listed. Very frustrating. I'll keep looking for a better book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2006-04-09

I bought this book (although I think of it more like a cataloge with just over 100 pgs.& soft cover)in search of unique ideas for painting a baby nursery and I found a few. The book contains several themes and decor as well as useful ideas for furniture in children's and babies rooms alike.

4 out of 5 stars Nice pictures and will give you good ideas..........2005-09-13

Pictures are very nice and will give you good ideas whether you use painted walls or wallpaper.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for even the experienced decorator!.......2002-01-08

I usually don't find what I need in these types of books, one of many in a serial of themes, but "Ideas for Great Baby Rooms" really surprised me. I noticed it at a friend's house and after flipping through the pages I had to buy one for my library. At first you'll be swept away by the beautiful full page photographs and then when you go back and begin to read the book (so often one buys decorating books for the pictures alone, but this is an exception to that rule) you'll discover there is actually a lot of useful information as well. Every topic is covered from figuring out your budget, to safety, nursery themes (or not), shopping lists, arranging the floor plan, bargain hunting, and what to do if you don't have much time.

I appreciate all of the options the author offers at each turn, and her encouragement to find your own style by using the examples in the book as a creative starting point. Many of these nurseries have a personalized feel rather than looking like a cutout from a retailer's catalog (only a couple nurseries looked dated or overdone). This book is more than inspirational, it is also informative and I find myself returning to it often.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2001-07-06

I found Great Baby Rooms quite helpful. There are several styles of nurseries ranging from traditional to contemporary. I was able to show my husband nurseries similar to the ideas in my mind and he was able to agree or disagree on my selections.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very tasty reduced-fat (if not always reduced-calorie) cookies.......2007-02-16

The good: I have made about 15 recipes from this book so far. All ranged from "good" to "excellent", a very respectable turnout. Not a single one was unpleasantly tough, dry, or otherwise failed. They compare VERY favorably with other lowfat cookies I have tried. I will definitely be making some again, and trying others. My personal favorites were apricot almond streusel squares, `gourmet' variation of the chocolate chip cookies, pecan pie squares, crunchy peanut cookies, and cornmeal maple pecan twists.

In general, the recipes in this book are reliable, tasty and have significantly reduced fat (especially saturated fat) as compared with comparable `regular' cookies. E.g., in a typical ~ 2 cup flour recipe, there is usually ~4 T butter here as opposed to 1-2 sticks, and egg yolks are usually reduced or eliminated. The changes do reduce overall dough volume and yield a smaller batch size, which in my opinion is all to the good. (If you're buying a reduced-fat cookie cookbook, chances are you don't want 5 dozen extra cookies lying around every time you head to the kitchen to try a new recipe).

Other pluses: these recipes use familiar, inexpensive and natural ingredients that you already have on hand or can easily find: no weird or artificial diet substitutes. Unlike most low-fat recipes, these cookies are portioned normally and even generously; there is no artificial lowering of the fat content by instructing you to fashion micro-cookies of which you would have to eat 10 to equal one normal cookie. In fact, in several recipes I ended up with more cookies than the listed yield, which almost never happens to me.

This book also seems like a labor of love-- the recipes are unusually well-tested and fine tuned. The instructions are clear, careful and include useful details, like tips on how to reduce the number of dishes you dirty in the preparation. The book belies its small size with lots of helpful or interesting marginal notes and voluminous recipe variations, many of which yield genuinely different recipes (not just something obvious like substitute one variety of raisin for another). You'll find a wonderful diversity of cookie flavors, textures and styles and familar standbys as well as unique recipes of the author's own creation.

The bad: First, I found a few baking times to be off, in particular, too long (my only general `recipe testing' complaint). The author is good about providing other done-ness cues, but I'd recommend you start checking cookies much earlier than indicated.

Second, although these recipes are very good, there were some clear `consequences' of reducing the fat. Several cookies had telltale textural issues such as being soft and cakey instead of tender-chewy, or being hard-crunchy instead of tender-crunchy. Also, almost all became stale frustratingly quickly, in several cases, within a few hours. Some took well to refreshing, freezing, storing unbaked dough to bake off as needed, etc., but I had to figure this out on my own. Given the pervasiveness of the premature staling problem, I would really have appreciated more attention to storage advice and/or strategies - no one wants to end up throwing out most of one's labors away.

Finally, the philosophy of this book is very much of a mid-nineties `reduce fat and who cares about anything else' style, and that philosophy, as most people would now acknowledge, suffered from some major nutritional flaws. Again, the recipes do succeed, and admirably, on satisfying the criteria they set out to satisfy (they are lower fat, and they taste good-- no mean feat). However, if you flip through the nutritional information handily accompanying each recipe, you may notice that many of these cookies are very high in refined carbohydrates and calories. Many of the bars, especially, hover around the mark of 200 calories EACH (and some even more)-- that's a lot. And of course you're not going to eat just one. Morever, many recipe variations are rather decadent (calling for additions of things like nuts, chocolate chips and caramel), with added fat but no added calorie information. I find all this to be off-putting in a book that promises `healthy alternatives that can be eaten without guilt.'

In fact, a number of these recipes seem to have nearly the same total calories as the `standard' version whose fat has not been assiduously reduced. In such cases, you're not so much saving calories as you are exchanging them--by and large, fats for simple carbohydrates. Arguably, this is a trade for the worse, as it increases the "empty calorie" count of your treat and decreases the satiety that fats provide. Then there are the losses that come along with the fat for simple-carb trade--e.g., lower-fat cookies go stale much faster and without the fat, they can taste too sweet. In many cases the new cookies, while still very good, are obviously missing elements of the old standbys. If you slash the amount of chocolate chips in a chocolate chip cookie or the amount of nuts in a Russian tea cake, you can tell that those elements are missing, however appealing the new versions may be on their own terms. This, in combination with a belief that the new cookies are `healthier' (and are going to be stale tomorrow) can lead us to eat an extra cookie or two and thus end up with more calories than if we'd just stuck with the family recipe from the 50's.

I'll now remove my party-pooper hat and reiterate that the author has succeeded in producing a book of wonderful-tasting, diverse and easy cookies with less fat. The book is absolutely in the top tier of the low-fat dessert cookbook family. If you are selective, you can also find many tasty choices that are not JUST reduced fat, but also sport an impressive nutritional profile for dessert. And the book is generally a pleasure to cook and read from. So, I give it 4 stars because it mostly delivers on what it promises. Just don't expect the recipes be nutritional miracles.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2006-04-13

I bought this recipe book when I really did not have the money to invest in recipe books. Now that I can buy the pricier books I find myself constantly returning to this old favorite. Very very good recipes. Lowfat goodies made with easy variations. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2005-11-07

Ooh I just love this book. Every recipe sounds realy good and there's so little fat that it makes you feel less guilty indulging in the cookies. I've only just purchased the book and have tried one recipe so far the Chocolava cookie and it turned out great. This is a good book to have even if you are just trying to use up egg whites like I was after makng ice cream. A real contradiction I know. But I give this book 2 thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars My perfect match!.......2005-07-15

My sister and I are health addicts-we are majoring in nutrition. We love to bake and cook healthy. Her cookies are as good as the high fat ones. My favorite so far is the Aaron's melt in your mouth peanut butter cookies. It is like eating rich, fudgy peanut butter. Her fruit bars are good as well. The instructions are written perfectly-I hardly make any adjustments. It comes out just like she says. The book is like my long lost friend that I have discovered. It is a miracle that she came up with these recipes. She must have tested them out and experimented many times. I give Julie 1000 thumbs up. I'll keep making cookies and sweet tasty desserts without feeling the guilt!

5 out of 5 stars Simple, delicious recipes.......2005-04-20

I bake a lot, and this is one of my favourite cookbooks. The recipes are straightforward, there's lots of variety, and every one I've tried has turned out wonderfully (and I have tried probably 30 or 40 of them!)

I always get requests for the recipe when I make things from this book, and people never guess that they're less-fattening versions. I have given a couple of copies of this book as gifts and they've been much appreciated.

This is my go-to cookbook whenever my family is in the mood for cookies or squares. We use it every week.

I tried to follow the recipe precisely but I didn't have parchment paper so I used greased foil, I didn't have almond extract, I put chocolate chips in the dough instead of almonds, the egg & sugar mixture would not thicken AND the dough was so sticky it would not form into a log as was needed so I wet my hands & shaped it as best I could AND....... oh my god it came out perfect...d elicious.... fabulous!!!
So this recipe is a keeper. Hope the rest are the same but I'm really into chocolate biscotti for now so I'll experiment with that.
P.S, there is no butter in the recipes! This is for the figure conscious eater!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the 3 biscotti books I purchased.......2003-02-27

I have tried several of the recipes, with great results.
The US measurements haven't been a problem for this Kiwi cook - if the mix is a bit dry or moist I just add a little more of the wet or dry ingredients.

No need for the food processing equipment mentioned, I have coped without quite happily...

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe they're low fat!.......2001-10-01

I've made many of the biscotti in this book and they've all turned out wonderfully. I especially like the espresso biscotti. It is easy to substitute ingredients -- I've added jalepano peppers to the sesame biscotti to rave reviews. I haven't purchased all the extracts suggested, but the baking parchment is a must.

5 out of 5 stars I Buoni Biscotti!.......2001-09-01

This book's got lots of excellent biscotti recipes, and I'm having fun trying a new one each week. Cranberry Pistachio was great, as were the Orange Almond.... Can't wait to try the Pignoli. Recipes are easy to follow, and produce great results. I like the fact that they aren't all sweet, and that they don't all require a food processor, etc. Her suggestions about the King Arthur Baker's catalogue for specific ingredients are great.

Benissimo! The folks at work are enjoying the results.

4 out of 5 stars Great treats and easy to make.......1999-11-08

This is a great book if you have made biscotti before or are just getting into it. You'll discover that it isnt difficult to make great looking cookies and all my friends were very impressed. There are helpful hints about baking and ingredients as well as the recipes. The sweet cookie recipes are imaginative although they sometimes call for hard to find ingredients. There is also a section of recipes for appetizer style biscotti--not sweet but a great replacement for breads. Overall, a useful book that will bring you compliments.

I love biscotti, and found this book to have the best variety of recipes. This was the book I chose to give as a gift to two fellow biscotti lovers. The recipes are easy, and the end product is delicious.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst 50!.......2004-03-20

I am a great lover of biscotti, especially since I have to watch my sugar intake. Because biscotti can be expensive, I decided to make this simple cookie and have quite successfully. However, this book is not the book to buy if one wants biscotti of good texture and taste. I remade one recipe (Almond Biscotti) and tried two others (Coconut Biscotti and Milk Chocolate & Honey) to see if I made a mistake or preferred another flavor, but none of them were worth the effort. They were dry and too hard. The recipes I found on-line and in magazines were much better. I'll try another book.

1 out of 5 stars The Best 50 Biscotti Recipes.......2003-11-27

Both my Mom and I bought a copy of this book, because I love biscotti's. I've made them before and have always had great luck. But I made two recipes from this book. Both were so bad tasting that I threw the biscotti's and the book out. Then I called my Mom and told her she might want to throw out her book too, before she wasted her time and money making any of these recipes. I didn't even try to sell the book online because I would have felt guilty.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 50 Biscotti Recipes.......2002-12-18

Comprehensive list of biscotti from sweet to savory. Biscotti isn't just for dessert! The combinations are interesting and I especially like the textureful No-Guilt biscotti with no oil or butter that includes whole wheat flour and bran. Also, wonderful triple ginger and the delicious and not too sweet Tuscan spice and almond. Many of the savory ones are good served with soup.

Book Description

Amy Mathews, the host of DIY network’s Bathroom Renovations, takes the intimidation out of restoration. Using projects adapted from the series, she provides a superbly organized, informative introduction that assesses the space and layout possibilities; reviews the range of styles and prices for cabinets, countertops, sinks, faucets, showers, tubs, fittings, walls, and floors; and covers design elements such as lighting, storage, and ventilation. Concise, illustrated instructions (peppered with lots of encouragement) provide the fundamental nuts and bolts of renovation techniques, from removing tubs and installing toilets to laying tile and restoring windows. Ten complete redos come with before, during, and after photography, and offer homeowners their choice of styles, time investment, and budget options. There’s something to appeal to every taste and need.

Amy Mathews honed her do-it-yourself skills with The Family Handyman magazine, where she did everything from outdoor repairs and projects to new product demonstrations. She currently hosts Bathroom Renovations on DIY Network, a show that covers everything from simple updates to luxurious “dream spas.” Everything involved in a bathroom makeover, from plumbing to counters, is tackled with style.

4 out of 5 stars Ideas for Renovating Your Bathroom.......2006-12-07

The TV renovation programs inspire us and now here's the book to help with your own bathroom makeover project. It contains lots of ideas, but I'd hesitate to tackle some of these with my limited practical skills. There are instructions but sometimes they assume the reader has some plumbing knowledge already. It does give adequate help for removing tiles, old sinks and tubs and mirrors. Team it up with another book on bathroom how-to so you don't find yourself with the bathroom all torn up and inadequate info to finish it.
