the best cookbook out there.......2007-10-11
this was a gift for my sister-in-law and I believe everyone should own a copy of this book. It is the most helpful general cookbook I have ever owned and I have given copies to many friends and family members.
Favorite.......2007-09-08
This was my favorite cook book and my daughter thought so too, so I bought her this one for her new home.
Good basic source.......2007-08-16
Great 'learn to cook' source. I sent each of my kids off to their first apartments with a copy.
Love this book!.......2007-07-24
I borrowed the book from the library. This was the only cookbook that I borrowed from the library that I use practically everyday. After renewing the book three times, I think it was time to purchase it. The instructions are easy to follow, the ingredients simple, and I've only had something come out bad once due to a missed ingredient on my part. This book is really great for a beginner to intermediate - where fanciful is not necessary.
Are roasted red peppers the new sun dried tomatoes?.......2007-07-18
The recipes are solid and practical. I use this cookbook as my starter when I'm planning meals for the week. If it doesn't have a recipe for a particular base, then I move on. It works well in that role. I have noticed a number of recipes that would've had sun dried tomatoes as a unique flavor in previous recipes now have roasted red peppers.
The ability of the cookbook to stay open on it's own is a real bonus.

Amazing Book... A must have for organic gardening.......2007-07-15
This book is awesome. Eliot presents an abundance of information. The information is organized and clear. Eliot does not assume what we already know, and what we have at our disposal. For example, many books will tell you how to create a mulch pile. You need this much brown matter, this much green matter, ... . That is all fine and dandy, but where do I magically get all of this material! Eliot understands this and explains many ways we can obtain the mulch material. He also does not assume your knowledge basis. For example, he will explain what and how a lugume works. This book is a constant resource for the organic gardener.
A great book!

I live in Northwest Washington. Cool, dry in July in August, generally mild and wet the rest of the year. If you are thinking tomatoes, long season sweet corn, peaches, melons, peppers, etc. you are on the wrong side of the state - try Eastern Washington. Either way, or where ever you grow, this is the bible. Its the most comprehensive, holistic guide I know. You might also read other guides, embellish or adapt Eliot's system to fit your situation, but you won't find a better collection of techniques to start from! Get this book!
Wooo..........2007-02-09
Got me hiped up for my next several years here in Missouri. Practical, simplified systems for both the new and novice organic gardener. Definitely a fun read. Bring your highlighter. Thank you to the author, and all of the great shoulders that he stood on to get to this point...
My new constant companion.......2006-12-22
Mr. Coleman has packed so much information into this wonderful book! I have started to use many of his suggestions. Keeping the costs of growing food down was one of the first subjects that caught my attention.
simply down to earth - literally.......2006-08-11
This is absolutely the best, straightforward, down to earth, organic gardening book I have ever read. No hype, no buzzwords, no new age crap, no agenda. Simply down to earth - literally.

In books from their popular Ultimate series, including The Ultimate Shrimp Book and The Ultimate Brownie Book, Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarborough have plumbed the depths of single-subject cookery, offering base recipes with many variations. The Ultimate Cook Book, their magnum opus, follows the same approach--over 900 recipes with variations are included for every course and occasion, including breakfast and snacks, plus a wide range of breads and desserts. Included are straightforward takes on old favorites, like roast chicken and hamburgers; innovative versions of familiar fare, such as Grilled Chili, and Banana Layer Cake with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting; and "new" fare like Whole Fried Fish with Two Asian Sauces, Lemonade Bread, and Baked Pasta Casserole with Blue Cheese, Peas, and Artichoke Hearts. Present also are informative side bars, such as Know Your Greens, and equally enlightening notes on ingredients, equipment and techniques.
Falling somewhere between an all-purpose cookbook and a modern-classics compendium, this is an ambitious work that usually succeeds. Offering, for example, a basic recipe for deviled eggs and then providing six possible fillings for them, or supplying seven ways to bake thin fish fillets, is a welcome approach that helps readers grasp cooking anatomy. Occasionally, however, variations seem to have been included for their own sake, as when, for example, a lengthy list of alternative additions, including curry powder and lemon zest, is offered for scrambled eggs--the fact that one could use them doesn't mean one should. In addition, recipes, both traditional and modern, are not always in best taste--my grandmother would have rightly looked askance at matzo balls made with garlic and onion powders, and, probably, Winter Lasagna with Mushrooms, Spinach, and Tarragon too.
These things said, the book offers many solid, easy, and delicious formulas, like Tuscan-Inspired Pork Loin with Potatoes and Garlic and a wide range of cobblers with fillings including fig and pear cranberry, plus much useful and innovative insight into the cooking process itself. Cooks at all skill levels should find it a welcome kitchen addition. ---Arthur Boehm

A winner, with a bullet. Buy It Now!.......2007-09-01
`The Ultimate Cookbook' by Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough is a title which figuratively sticks out its chin and invites one to criticize it for overweening pride. I am happy to say that this book lives up to the promise of its title as well as any 692 page book is able to do. For starters, the authors get an initial allowance for having already written ten other `The Ultimate...' this, that, and the other thing cookbooks, all of which (at least those of which I've reviewed) are, I can say, very decent manuals on their respective subjects, even if I did fail to find a good blueberry muffin recipe in their `Ultimate' muffin book. Thus, they are simply enlarging their franchise on this title. They also deserve much credit for pointing out and delivering on their `all new recipes' claim. This means that they have not just `phoned in' this book by reproducing all the material from their other books. So far, this at least makes them eligible for four stars.
But there is more. Much, much more. I have always believed that one can detect a very good or a very bad book within two minutes of opening the covers and browsing about in the Table of Contents and the Introduction. The symptoms of quality showed up almost immediately, when I saw two sections in the `Fish and Shellfish' chapter on `Thin White-Fleshed Fish Fillets' and `Thick White-Fleshed Fish Fillets'. These are obviously guys who have browsed the fish counter and wondered if the flounder and haddock fillets (thin and thick respectively) can be cooked in the same way.
My mind was made up even before I got past the Introduction, where I read the `Thirty-One Examples of Culinary Shorthand'. This is exactly the kind of section I always thought would be a good idea, but have never seen anyone do it really well, until now!
On the one hand, this is a very good general purpose reference cook book, similar to `The Joy of Cooking', Mark Bittman's `How to Cook Everything', and James Beard's `American Cookery'. It has fifteen (15) chapters on all the essential topics. These are:
Breakfast and Brunch
Appetizers, Nibbles, and Snacks
Salads
Soups
Pasta and Noodles
Bread
Chicken, Turkey, and Other Birds
Fish and Shellfish
Beef, Pork, and Other Meats
Vegetables
Grains, Beans, Lentils, and Tofu
Cakes
Cookies
Pies, Tarts, and Fruit Desserts
Puddings, Custards, Mousses, and Souffles
Now the fact that Maida Heatter alone has written about 1200 pages worth of books on cakes demonstrates that there is no way our fair authors can cover every detail of all these subjects. But, they go about each subject which is demonstrably more thoughtful than many, many other cookbook authors. Their ideal audience is one step up from the Rachael Ray 30 minute meal level (note the four chapters on baked goods) where the reader is willing to read through a goodly portion of the book to get the lay of the land before rushing out to the supermarket. On the other hand, the book is not written for the dedicated foodie who follows the advice of high end chefs and does not decide what they will be making until they see what is good at the market that day. To paraphrase the authors, `you don't want to be guessing what you want to make at 6:30 in the evening as you walk down the supermarket aisles.
So, in addition to the very common advice to read a recipe through carefully before beginning, they add the suggestion to read the recipe(s) before and after the one you want, in the event that something similar looks even more interesting.
I was never a big fan of the authors' technique of giving a master recipe and lots of one sentence variations. If I want my blueberry muffin recipe, I want one that someone has tested, not one which is a fourth afterthought to some generic muffin recipe. The authors do NOT take this approach in this book; however they DO many recipes where they give you a template from which you can create dozens of different results from the same recipe. An excellent example is `A road map for The Ultimate Granola'. Granola has lots of ingredients, most of which retain their particular character in the mix, and many of which are on a lot of people's `least favorites' list. Peanuts and milk are two ingredients which many people need to avoid. And, like me, there are some who don't like either coconut or oatmeal. With this approach, you can concoct exactly what you want, and have it come out better than anything from Kellogg's or Post.
For the more traditional recipes, their descriptions of techniques are virtually perfect. My two favorite touchstones of recipe writing quality are scrambled eggs and omelets, and Weinstein and Scarbrough get these perfectly right. There is even a tip on omelet plating here I have never seen after reading at least 20 omelet recipes. The list goes on and on. Every chapter has its sections full of insights you rarely see elsewhere. And, the book is perfectly willing to get into `difficult' subjects such as recipes for fresh pasta, including six different flavored varieties. I was even surprised to discover they include a recipe for Spaetzle, a very specialized German cross between Gnocchi and dumplings.
So, the book is an `Ultimate' in the sense that it covers everything the average `good' home cook may want to know, given the ingredients available in their local supermarket. It will not replace dozens of other cookbooks, because there are thousands of popular dishes such as Basil pesto, tortilla Espanola, or even classic Caesar salad which are not here, but the book appeals to the person who already has books which include these recipes. If you have to own just one cookbook, this should probably be the one to get!

Excellent resource!.......2004-04-26
I got this cookbook shortly after it came out, as I was just becomming really interested in cooking. It has quickly become the bible of my kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow (and not to mention delicious!) with excellent pictures. It also offers detailed descriptions of various kinds of meats, grains, pastas, fruits, vegetables, etc. It has a very extensive variety of dishes to choose from... They say you can't please everyone, all the time, but this book will sure come close! I would highly recommend this book to any cook from beginner to advanced gourmet.
if you're going to own one cookbook - this is it.......2003-10-21
my mother-in-law bought me this cookbook and i've been using it every week since then. out of all the cooking books i own, this is the one i come back to time and time again. this book is a great resource for anything you would ever want to cook. the recipes are fantastic, most importantly - delicious - and are all very easy. there's a photo for almost each recipe, so if you're like me and you like to see a photo to picture the dish, this is the book for you. i highly recommend this book as the first and only cookbook you may ever need.
LOVED THIS BOOK.......2003-08-01
Was impressed by the quality of recipes in this book. This is a nice gift for someone just starting out, as well as seasoned cooks. Can't have too many books for sure.
Good things haven't changed over the years.......2003-07-06
While I was growing up, I loved helping my mom cook. I used to read through her cookbooks, looking at pictures and dreaming of one day being able to cook things like those pictures. My favorite cookbook was her Good Housekeeping cookbook. Now, 23 years later, I'm out on my own. I was at my mom-in-law's house, and I noticed she had a copy of this new GH cookbook. She bought an extra copy for me.
I absolutely love my All New Good Housekeeping Cook Book. The recipes are very diverse. I love the hints from the professionals, scattered throughout the book. Most of all, I love that GH kept the pictures in and kept fairly simple recipes in. If you know the Good Housekeeping name, you'd definitely know that this a top-notch cookbook!
Bought by mistake.......2003-01-03
As part of a bookclub, I forgot to inform them that I did not want this selection, so they sent it. That was three years ago and I never really looked at the book until this past thanksgiving. Since them I've used it frequently and it's amazing!! I first tried the after thanksgiving turkey soup, it was great, I then tried scalloped potatoes (which I'd usually failed at before), and they were good, then I tried the simple pasta with peas, and again very good. As I've looked through the other recipes, there are so many I've marked to be tested. I'm glad I got this book by mistake....and hate that it took so long for me to give it a try.
I highly recommend this book!!

Best CookBook ever printed.......2007-05-07
I got married in 1956 and this cookbook was a wedding gift. I still have the original, but I bought the new reprint not only for myself but for others. I learned to make bread with this cookbook and the pie crust recipe is as near fool proof as you can get. I still use this cookbook after all these years. It is my favorite.
Blast from the past.......2007-03-08
I bought this book for my mother as a replacement for her well-worn copy and she absolutely loved it!! It is exactly the same as the copy she received in her high school home-ec class except that the pages are not falling out and/or torn. This has been the default cookbook in my mother's kitchen for many years. The recipies are clear and concise with easy to follow directions. The pictures and pages are aged for that nostalgic effect but that doesn't diminish the quality of the contents.
Broken.......2007-01-25
I gave this cookbook 2 stars because although it was exactly what I was looking for, it came in an unacceptable condition. My mother had the original book for as long as I can remember and it had become well worn. Pages were falling out of it. This book was for all intesive purposes the same. When I gave it to my mom for Christmas she was so excited. Unfortunately, the three ring binder on it was broken. This is very bad considering that you need them to turn the pages. I would say that considering it was brand new, this was unacceptable
This was a hit as a gift!.......2007-01-11
I have a friend who's very much into the retro look in everkything, and she was thrilled with this book. All the old-timey pictures and recipes have kept her smiling for some time now. She keeps the cookbook open on her kitchen counter, and changes it to a different picture regularly. There is something very comforting about seeing something like this that reminds us of our mothers.
Thanks Mom!.......2006-03-21
This is a wonderful recipe book. It's so authentic I feel like a kid again with my Mom in the kitchen. She always used this book for different recipes to try as well as good old traditional bisquits and cookies. Thanks for keeping it going!

Mystery/SuspenseLarge Print Edition* A New York Times BestsellerThis harrowing new bestseller by the master of medical thrillers combines the fast action of a nerve-jangling thriller with the medical possibilities that are Robin Cooks trademarks. When a notorious underworld figure, Carlo Franconi, is gunned down, his body is snatched from the city morgue before it can be autopsied. A few days later, a floater appears on Dr. Jack Stapletons autopsy table missing its head, hands, feet and liver. With the help of Dr. Laurie Montgomery, Jack IDs the body as that of Carlo Franconi. Was the triggerman who killed him the same person who later dismembered him? Jack and Lauries search leads them to equatorial Africa where they discover a sinister cabal whose stock-in-trade involves surgical procedures a step beyond current medical technology and a leap beyond accepted medical ethics.
Download Description
In his most prophetic thriller yet, Robin Cook challenges the medical ethics of genetic manipulation and cloning. In the jungles of equatorial Africa, a biotechnology giant has taken transplant surgery and animal research to a new level. Where one mistake could bridge the evolutionary gap between man and ape--and forever change the genetic map of our existence...
Customer Reviews:
One of Cook's Best!!!.......2007-10-08
This is one of my favorite Robin Cook books. This rather prophetically scary story weaves together genetic engineering and cloning in humans and primates. Given rapid advances in modern technology, a story like this not only could come true any day, but do we really have any idea whether something like this is actually happening, without general public knowledge of it??? Think about it.
The Perils Of Genetic Engineering -- Interesting Topic, Gripping Action.......2007-02-04
I'm a bit puzzled by the slams of this book in some of the other reviews. I found the topic of the book intriguing and the action strong. Also the ending while admittedly "neat" didn't seem as abrupt or contrived as some of the other reviewers thought.
In a nutshell, a murder victim in New York shows evidence of a recent liver transplant, oddly the victim has no record of such a procedure and no evidence of taking the needed anti-rejection drugs. Its almost like he was transplanted with his own liver.
The connection is to an lab in Equatorial Guinea where a brilliant scientist has discovered a way to genetically engineer Bonobos to develop the perfect "clone" for a particular human's organs. However, the alteration of the Bonobos has other effects on them which leads to the pimates being a closer "host" to humanity than was initially intended...
I found the action constant and gripping throughout the book. Yes there were a number of implausibilities or coincences as the book progressed, but that is something I typically anticipate in a thriller.
What gave this book the little extra in my view was that the plot was more believable than other genetical engineering plots. The Bonobo idea is a direct extension of pig-based organ transplants, and the Bonobo may be the closest relative to a modern human (or at least very close to a chimpanzee) and the idea of them being used as an organ farm would have to take place in a more lawless country, but is still one that would be plausible.
I hate not being able to give half stars since I would really put this at a 3.5, but in this case I'll do a round-up to 4 stars to counteract some of the other reviews.
Great idea for a story, very poor follow through........2006-03-18
I've read 2 or 3 Robin Cook books and this will most likely be my last. To be fair, I didn't read this one, I heard it as a book on tape.
The story idea is quite original - scientists are using bonobos (a chimp-like primate in West Africa) to grow hybrid human/bonobo organs for the ultra-rich. These are specifically matched to each client and held in an animal preserve until needed. Unfortunately, there may be unintended results by mixing animal and human DNA...
Good premise for the story. Poor, poor, poor dialogue and awful follow through. There are stilted, silly sentences that sound unnatural when spoken out loud. Unexplained odd illogical behavior such as the downright stupid employees at the morgue. How stupid are they? The body of a mob boss disappears. The mayor is super angry and making telephone calls. People's jobs are on the line. The media is everywhere and asking questions. Do the morgue employees even bother to open up ALL of the body drawers just to see if the body was just misplaced? N0, because if they did they would have found one of the biggest clues of the mystery at the beginning of the book rather than towards the end.
The premise of the book is a sound one and it would have been a heckuva read if it had been placed in the hands of a different author.
My grade: C-
Another Great Book!.......2005-12-14
Robin Cook did again. Took mystery and science right to the edge. Kudos!
just something I didn't like about this book.......2005-11-01
some familiar faces return in this one which was pretty cool. That's one thing I like about certain authors. They bring back certain characters. Not necisarily in a 'series', but just to show that once you read them in one particular book, they're not forgotten by the author. Also brings a certain sense of attachment and interested with them.
the story reminded me a little of something James Rollins would come up with. Probably because of the setting moreso than anything else.
There's just something about the book that i couldnt' put my finger on that didn't have me completely wrapped up in it. Usually I get sucked into a book and can't wait to see how it pans out. I found that I wasn't overly excited to turn the page or get back to it when I had to put it down for a day or so.
I think it was the fact that the characters, for the mostpart, seem wooden in terms of their language and speaking style.
A great premise, but the execution fell short.
I liked necessary risk and blindsight much better.
