5 out of 5 stars the best cookbook out there.......2007-10-11

this was a gift for my sister-in-law and I believe everyone should own a copy of this book. It is the most helpful general cookbook I have ever owned and I have given copies to many friends and family members.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite.......2007-09-08

This was my favorite cook book and my daughter thought so too, so I bought her this one for her new home.

5 out of 5 stars Good basic source.......2007-08-16

Great 'learn to cook' source. I sent each of my kids off to their first apartments with a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-07-24

I borrowed the book from the library. This was the only cookbook that I borrowed from the library that I use practically everyday. After renewing the book three times, I think it was time to purchase it. The instructions are easy to follow, the ingredients simple, and I've only had something come out bad once due to a missed ingredient on my part. This book is really great for a beginner to intermediate - where fanciful is not necessary.

4 out of 5 stars Are roasted red peppers the new sun dried tomatoes?.......2007-07-18

The recipes are solid and practical. I use this cookbook as my starter when I'm planning meals for the week. If it doesn't have a recipe for a particular base, then I move on. It works well in that role. I have noticed a number of recipes that would've had sun dried tomatoes as a unique flavor in previous recipes now have roasted red peppers.

The ability of the cookbook to stay open on it's own is a real bonus.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best CookBook ever printed.......2007-05-07

I got married in 1956 and this cookbook was a wedding gift. I still have the original, but I bought the new reprint not only for myself but for others. I learned to make bread with this cookbook and the pie crust recipe is as near fool proof as you can get. I still use this cookbook after all these years. It is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the past.......2007-03-08

I bought this book for my mother as a replacement for her well-worn copy and she absolutely loved it!! It is exactly the same as the copy she received in her high school home-ec class except that the pages are not falling out and/or torn. This has been the default cookbook in my mother's kitchen for many years. The recipies are clear and concise with easy to follow directions. The pictures and pages are aged for that nostalgic effect but that doesn't diminish the quality of the contents.

2 out of 5 stars Broken.......2007-01-25

I gave this cookbook 2 stars because although it was exactly what I was looking for, it came in an unacceptable condition. My mother had the original book for as long as I can remember and it had become well worn. Pages were falling out of it. This book was for all intesive purposes the same. When I gave it to my mom for Christmas she was so excited. Unfortunately, the three ring binder on it was broken. This is very bad considering that you need them to turn the pages. I would say that considering it was brand new, this was unacceptable

4 out of 5 stars This was a hit as a gift!.......2007-01-11

I have a friend who's very much into the retro look in everkything, and she was thrilled with this book. All the old-timey pictures and recipes have kept her smiling for some time now. She keeps the cookbook open on her kitchen counter, and changes it to a different picture regularly. There is something very comforting about seeing something like this that reminds us of our mothers.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Mom!.......2006-03-21

This is a wonderful recipe book. It's so authentic I feel like a kid again with my Mom in the kitchen. She always used this book for different recipes to try as well as good old traditional bisquits and cookies. Thanks for keeping it going!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Maybe 4 1/2. Very Good Choice for the Cookbook with everything.......2007-10-11

The `New Cookbook, 14th Edition' from `Better Homes and Gardens' is a heavyweight contender for best `if you have to have only one cookbook...' title, weighing in against the perennial champion, `The Joy of Cooking', now at its 75th Anniversary edition. The first of these contenders has been my mother's favorite for at least the last 40 years, and her original copy is so beat up (thus the purchase of a new edition), I can't even see the publication date on its binder, where the covers have literally fallen off the spine.
Looking at the bare figures, `Joy' would seem to be a clear winner, with almost twice (1132 versus 656) the number of pages and almost three times (4000 versus 1400) the number of recipes. Going one step deeper and comparing the Tables of Contents, `Joy' has 39 chapters to `Better Homes' 23 chapters, meaning that `Joy' gives some topics a highlighted treatment missing from `Better Homes'. And yet, `Better Homes' has things going for it, especially considering the fact that there are millions of people such as my mother who have been going to it for so many years.
`Better Homes' most obvious attribute is its 3 ring binder style, which means that every page will lay perfectly flat AND one can easily remove any page and photocopy it on an inexpensive home multipurpose copier / scanner / printer. No small consideration compared to `Joy's' sewn signatures which are a bit awkward if you are looking at candies at the end of the book or appetizers near the front of the book. This virtue is diminished just a tad by the fact that the binding is a non-standard size, not carried by your local Staples. (I looked, to try to replace the binder laying on my workbench in three pieces!). Another virtue associated with this design is the tabbed dividers for each section. This makes browsing to look for a nice egg recipe much easier than in `Joy'. The next obvious virtue is its color pictures. This is not a clear win, since `Joy's line drawings of how to techniques are often superior to `Better Homes' static pics.
`Better Homes', after over 40 years on the bookshelves, primarily succeeds at the one thing every `general purpose' cookbook must do well. It has good recipes for virtually every basic, and most of the not so basic preparations the average home cook will want to do in the kitchen in the course of a year. The only stock recipes I could not find was one for Genoise and one for the en papillote cooking technique. Not only do both appear in `Joy', but the Rombauer / Becker clan gives us two different recipes under both rubrics! But, `Better Homes' still has things going for it!
Looking at the layout, writing, and selection of recipes in `Better Homes', I find much that I like. Many standard recipes are provided with well-written variations, and especially variations I am really interested in trying, such as the blueberry variations on pancakes and muffins. There are also many full-blown parallel recipes when there are several classic ways for making a basic dish, such as biscuits, both rolled and cut and drop biscuits. I am also fond of how most of the recipes are written. Few details are overlooked, yet the writing is crisp and no nonsense direct and to the point. The one thing which will most appeal to the average home cook is that the book makes a point of using only familiar ingredients certain to appear even on the smaller local supermarket shelves. On the other hand, there is little or no holdover from the dark days of 1950s cooking making heavy use of canned or dried ingredients. On the other hand, canned mushrooms, mushroom soup, and hydrogenated shortening are not missing entirely and more than once I found recipes where butter does better than Crisco.
The two things which most impressed me were the overall selection of recipes and the excellent introductory chapter on `Cooking Basics'. There is an entire library of cookbooks who try to give a good treatment of this subject, and end up giving us just a short chapter of filler to pad out their standard 250 pages. `Better Homes' does it right, as befitting its `be all things' ambitions. The recipe selection is broad enough to appeal to even the more adventuresome home cook, with its recipes for breads, homemade pasta, and homemade salad dressings. My problem with some of the more elaborate recipes is that the product is almost certain to be not as good as what you get from a commercial source. The cinnamon bun recipe, for example, is not nearly as good as my standard from `Baking with Julia'. I was also skeptical of it's hot cross buns recipe, a preparation which is remarkably difficult, as baked goods go. Remarkably, `Joy' passes on both these recipes, reinforcing my belief that for these specialties, one will be far better off going to a book specializing in baking for an authoritative recipe.
IF I were limited to a single cookbook, my personal choice between these two is `Joy of Cooking', simply because it's recipes are just as good as `Better Homes', and there is more of it. But, if your family tradition belongs to `Better Homes and Gardens', you will not be disappointed by their offering.

5 out of 5 stars I LOOOOVE this book!.......2007-04-26

Since the very first minute that i have received this book i have fallen in love with it, it's very VERY useful! everytime i try a recipe people just fall in love with it and ask for the recipe!
i have a small shelf in my kitchen with the most useful and frequently used cookbooks, and this book is one of them! i seriously recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars It made a cook out of me!.......2007-04-01

I first came across this cookbook almost 10 years ago, when I was just learning how to cook western dishes [being from Singapore]...I must say that this has been the best investment in a cookbook for me. Its format is very user-friendly, and if you buy the spiral-bound version, you'll find it easy to flip through the recipes. The cookbook itself is divided into several sections, i.e. cooking basics, appetisers and snacks, beans, rice and grains, beverages, breads, cakes, candies, canning & freezing, cookies, crockery cooking, desserts, eggs & cheese, fish & shellfish, grilling, meat, pasta, pies & tarts, poultry, salads & dressings, sauces & relishes, soups & stews, vegetables & fruits. At the end of the cookbook, one will find a useful index & metric for referencing.

The other good feature of this cookbook is that it also lists recipes as healthy, low-fat, or best-loved which adds to its value as a good cooking reference. I would recommend this cookbook to any beginner cook,as the recipes are reliable not overly complicated and turn out pretty well.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone needs a cookbook like this....to start.......2007-01-23

I received this book while I was still in college and living in my own apartment for the first time. I can honestly say that this book was a wonderful teacher for me as I began to learn how to cook. The handy reference pages, including a substitutions guide, were always open on my kitchen counter. The cookbook's directions are easy to follow and often the pictures illustrate certain techniques. The special photo section at the back has plenty of tasty dishes, some a bit more ambitious for the cook.
Overall though, if you are looking for more exotic flavors and dishes, you should definitely expand your cookbook library out from this cookbook. The great thing about the New Cook Book is that it covers the standards in just about every category, but on the downside, some of these standards can be rather boring. Don't forget to mix it up.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Happy Anniversary To A Great Cook Book!.......2007-01-21

This book was given to me when I got my own apartment years ago. I used it faithfully all through the early years of my marriage too. I still refer to it as my cooking "bible." I think so much of it, I bought myself another one AND one for my daughter who recently got her own place. I just like the way it's put together and it's easy to understand and follow. Taught me how to keep my husband's appetite in check all these years.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-11

My fiance and I have this cook book and we especially love the chili and the pot roast recipes. We have also gotten this as a gift and recommended recipes to our family members. It is very easy to follow and actually has food that you will eat!

3 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker Crock Pot Review.......2002-10-15

I thought the book is very dated, and the receipes lacked flair. I would have liked a book that is more recent, with nutritional breakdowns included.

4 out of 5 stars A good start.......2002-02-18

I just got a slow cooker for Xmas the recipes are easy to follow and so far tasty. A good introduction to my new way of cooking hearty meals in my busy life.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2001-09-23

I have three top favorite crock pot cook books and this is one of them.

This cookbook is well organized with easy to follow recipes. The dinners turn out well. Most of the meals use on hand ingredients with very few exotic requests.

I am a big fan of crock pot cooking. If you are looking for a good book with lots of yummy recipes, this is one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Used this for years--lots of yummy recipes.......2001-01-16

This is a book filled with simple crock pot recipes that my family loves. In fact, my husband has asked me to cook Apple Pork Roast & Vegetables when we hosted his family for dinner. I make Lentil-Mushroom Soup frequently and Chicken & Sausage Gumbo is also good. If you watch your fat intake, you will need to adjust the recipes--use low fat meats, cut out the recommended oil, etc. Overall worth having in your crock pot cookbook collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Cookbook.......2006-11-04

This is the best cookbook I've purchased. It covers so many diverse topics and gives you so many different recipes, and they are all pretty simple too. IT's also great for newlywed couples b/c it gives you a whole bunch of meals for two.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes for EVERY OCCASION.......2006-08-13

My daughter checked this book from the library to read, (hotel management major) and asked for a copy for her birthday. What a wonderful read. Excellent tried and true recipes, illustrations are colored on glossy paper. Lots of tips and tricks. Just a wonderful, "first bride" cookbook to have but great for everyday occasions.

4 out of 5 stars For a more intimate present, you may want to try . . . .......2005-05-18

I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've looked at a number of bride-groom cookbooks. So far, my favorite is NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendlier, more intimate tone than any of the others -- it feels like something written by a bride for other brides.

It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's just a higher quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen.

If you want a good cookbook, any of the various newlywed cookbooks will work fine. If you want an excellent present for a wedding or a bridal shower, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE.

5 out of 5 stars More than 1,200 recipes and enhanced with some 700 photos.......2005-03-09

Featuring more than 1,200 recipes and enhanced with some 700 photos, the New Cook Book: Bridal Edition from Better Homes and Gardens offers a culinary wealth of menu ideas for romantic dinners, holiday meals, and parties with friends -- as well as palate pleasing, appetite satisfying family meals at home. There is a guide to wines, cheeses, and contemporary cocktails, as well as tips and techniques that will provide even the most novice of kitchen cooks with a feeling of accomplished expertise. Of special note is the practical advice for putting on a big holiday dinner. From Pomegranate Martinis; White Bean Dip; Chocolate Caramel Bars; and Chicken Fried Steak; to One-Pot Spaghetti; Taco Salad; Meatball Soup; and Broccoli-Carrot Stir-Fry, the New Cook Book: Bridal Edition has "kitchen cook friendly" recipes and ideas for virtually every dining occasion!

5 out of 5 stars Toss up between two beautiful wedding gifts.......2005-01-21

It was a toss up between this BH&G Bridal cookbook and Betty Crocker's Bridal Edition. I compared both of them in the book store and both are beautiful gifts each with their own strong points. I happened to select Better Homes and Gardens because the bride in this case would like a slow cooker. This book has a chapter of slow cooker recipes as well as a chapter on grilling-indoor & out. It covers both charcoal and gas grilling how to's, safety plus a timing chart for indoor electric. Both books have great color photos of different cuts of meats and more. I can't remember all the photos in Betty Crocker, but this one has photos of unfamiliar vegetables, fruits, legumes etc. The recipes look more exciting, and some of them are labeled with a heart for Best loved. Some are labeled for preparation time slow, fast, no fat, low fat etc. If there is a technique in the recipe that may be unfamiliar, the page number is cited for additional help. There is also a large Bonus section in the front of the book with many more ideas such as napkin folding, centerpieces, family gatherings, and recipes for two. The following section on Cooking Basics covers, well... the basics! Utensils, seasonings, food storage safety, manners, and more, along with more photos. Either book would be a nice gift!

This was the first cook book I owned, and was given to me when I was 10. I used the quick and easy recipes learning to cook, and it is still my favorite place to look, the easiest place to find standard good home cooking recipes. It has a superb listing of basic necessities, and several very nice "playing in the kitchen all day" recipes - like moussaka/pastitsio, spiced slices cookies, candy window cut-out cookies, and many more. I recommed this to cooks of all ages, whether they like to cook or not.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Cookbook for any Cook's Library.......2002-05-11

I borrowed this cookbook from my Dad 6 years ago, for a doughnut recipe. I haven't yet returned it because I use it each & every week for something! This is the best basic cookbook in or out of print. The chicken enchilada recipe--better than any restaurant--in this edition is NOT in any of the new editions, nor by search on the BHG website. Classic recipes--chicken pot pie, homemade mac & cheese (better than Martha's), pictorial instructions for pie crust techniques, and super-yummy caramel corn.

5 out of 5 stars Best cookbook ever!.......2006-09-13

I bought this cookbook back in 1993 and have been using the recipes in it ever since. I get so many requests for the recipes I've made from it I have bought extra cookbooks to give out to people as gifts. The title is deceiving because it doesn't seem like those bland old diet cookbooks that you usually get. I lost the weight that I wanted to lose and have maintained my weight by keeping these recipes on hand. Also, I love that the cookbook has a picture for every recipe which is rare in most cookbooks. As stated earlier in someones comments about the serving size......It states how many servings the recipe makes they just figure you can divide equally.

Very easy transaction -- price was great -- shipping to a friend's address went off without a hitch. Hightly recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars Better Homes & Gardens New Dieter's Cookbook.......2002-12-17

My husband and I lost a total of 100 pounds in 5 months by using the delicious recipes in this book. The food is tasty, easy to prepare, and satisfying. The variety of foods from the traditional to the more exotic or ethnic gives the range of choice often missing in "diet" books. I have purchased this book as a gift for several friends who have also found it enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BEST "diet" COOKBOOK EVER!.......2002-04-21

I loved the pictures! I own alot of cookbooks, and this one has fast become my favorite. I liked the Classics section as well as the easy-to-understand calorie needs/bmi explanation in the front of the book and the 14-day menu planner. It contains good old fashioned dinners as well as easy gourmet-type delights. My husband is excited about this too! My whole family will enjoy losing weight while eating great tasting food without feeling they are on a diet!

3 out of 5 stars Eat Well, Feel Great, Gain Weight.......2002-02-05

I love the receipes in the book. The only thing I have a problem with is that the book states that "No more weighing", however it does not explain what an actual serving size is, it mentions briefly that you can weigh your food to get an idea of what a serving is, and then use your judgement from then on. Well, being someone that is over weight and has a problem with determining what an actual serving is poses a HUGE problem. That would mean, I WOULD have to weigh my food to figure out whether I am eating a serving or more. The title of the book is misleading, as well as the excerpts on the back and front cover.
