Great for teaching health and fitness.......2007-08-13
Great, fun book for young children. Wonderful way to introduce young ones to the ideas of eating right and staying fit so they can be healthy and strong. I will be using it in a preschool age classroom but my own children would have really enjoyed this one.
Staying healthy and self esteem.......2007-07-14
Some really important messages in this Seuss style beginner book including
the importance of hygiene, exercise, good nutrition, body safety, recognising and talking about own feelings, everyone is special and unique.
Sometimes the rhymes lose a bit of their rhythm, but overall I think it is a fair adaption of Seuss style, but most importantly it is a fun way to begin concepts of taking care and valuing yourself with young children.
cute and fun but out of date.......2006-11-10
The book is great and has wonderful healthy positive messages. My kids love it and ask to read it over and over. The only dissapointment is that it still has one page with the old food guide pyramid.
Oh the things you can do that are good for you.......2005-12-10
I like this book because it taught me all different things when i was littler. Like how to brush my teeth, floss, wash my hands, wash my hair, get exercise, how to deal with a cold, the right food to eat, and how its important at the end of the day to get your rest. This book taught me so much and im thankful for that.

Cauliflower in the Hat.......2005-10-18
My kids (boys 8 and 5) still ask to hear this book at bedtime at least once every couple of weeks, so obviously the intended audience enjoys this. My own objections -- having read the thing aloud to said kids at least 100 times -- are largely aesthetic. The rhymes in this book are either strained
It can travel five feet
and blasts out with great power
at speeds over one hundred
miles an hour!
or facile (the Garoo in Fadoo tell me true, they do - just like you!) to a degree that bugs me as a Seuss fan.
To be fair, this problem turns up throughout the Learning Library series, not just in the volumes written by Tish Rabe. When you have to cover every health issue under the sun short of cancer and addiction (or every dinosaur or aspect of plant reproduction), it's probably pretty rough to hold a rhyme scheme and use words that kids can understand. Rabe does a respectable enough job at it that -- well, guess what the little Dinos want to hear again tonight?
Book Description
Since its publication in October of 1930, this classic spoof on textbook history has sold four million copies worldwide and has itself become a part of humor history. This anniversary edition is a celebration of this uproarious satire's lingering appeal and is enhanced by brilliant new drawings by cartoonist Stephen Appleby.

Not as good as I remembered it.......2007-09-24
I read it many years ago and thought it was wonderful. Today, at 79 I cannot see the humor in it that I once did. I would not recommend it.
A very British book.......2007-03-21
I was delighted to find this book being reprinted. It is funny in the same way that "Monty Python" was at its best. You do need a fair knowledge of English history to appreciate many of the jokes. Sometimes I had to read a 'real' history book to figure out what this one was talking about, but strangely, I can remember the history I learned this way far better than I remember the history I was taught in school.
The book covers English history from pre-Roman times to 1918. Many English schoolbooks still do, not wanting to admit that Britannia no longer rules the waves.
Great disappointment.......2007-01-10
I'd looked forward to receiving this "cult classic" little book, knowing that it had delighted generations of mischievous English public-school types. I guess it is what one ought to have supposed: a book full of silly upper-class-twit jokes. (Haw-haw! What will Master think!)
Anyway, for us who are more prosaically born and raised, this book offers no reward other than insight into the childhood of a frivolous (if oxonian) class of recently and soon to be dead English aristocracy.
I just ordered ANOTHER copy.......2006-10-21
... because you can lose a lot of copies in 50 years; it's been about that long since I first read it.
Absolutely hilarious, in the understated Jerome Jerome way in which the Brits excel.
By the way, could we nominate the two-star review above for "least insightful review ever"? "History for Dummies", feh.
Can Americans Understand This Book?.......2006-05-18
As a US Citizen, I approached this noted history book with trepidation. Would I be put off by high-faluting British snootiness on a subject I knew nothing about?
I'm pleased to say that this informative volume answers all your questions about Great Britain's history without making you feel like a fool. I learned how the British became the "Top Country" by winning many memorable battles which will long be remembered. And I now know how to tell apart Napoleon and Nelson: Napoleon held his arm like THIS and Nelson held his arm like THAT. No more confusion.
Will Americans understand this book? YES! It's even funny in places-- is this intentional, do you suppose?

Inspirational Classic
Meet a self-made man who lived a totally unselfish life, and who opened doors of opportunity for untold millions through his philosophy that "ALL GOOD THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!" He believed that each of us is placed here on earth for one main purpose--to help others.
Conwell was a minister, the founder of Temple University, and two hospitals where no one was ever turned away for lack of money. He was also a famous lecturer. In his lecture, the story is told of a man who sells his farm, to travel far and wide in search of diamonds. There is a moral to the tale Conwell gave the lecture over 6,000 times to untold numbers of people. It earned over $4,000,000 (about $150,000,000 in today's dollars.) all given to youth and education.
"ACRES OF DIAMONDS" is a spiritual book. It is not a "get-rich-quick" guide. Conwell saw that success is a spiritual idea, and is a result of spiritual principles. The 160-page book includes the lecture and biographical material. Here is the original self-motivational message, long lost, now found!
You, too, can find your fortune -- if you know where to look. Let the author point you in the right direction to find your "Acres of Diamonds." There are many opportunities for success today as in Conwell's time, if not more so, because they are found first and foremost in one's own conscience.

Success Classic.......2006-06-26
Russell Conwell's book, "Acres of Diamonds" was developed from a speech he delivered to church congregations over 5,000 times. The proceeds he earned from this speech are reputed to have given him a fortune, which he used to found Temple University in Philadelphia.
"Acres of Diamonds" is the story of a successful farmer in India named Al Hafed. Hafed is tempted by the allure of wealth and sells his farm to search the world for diamonds. Years later he dies penniless, having not found diamonds. However, back home the man who purchased Hafed's farm accidentally discovers a huge field of diamonds on Hafed's former land.
Conwell uses this story to illustrate that success often lies close at hand, if you are willing to open your eyes and mind to opportunity. Conwell further suggests that most people are "pygmies of their possible selves," rarely achieving the potential of their innate abilities or local opportunities. Conwell also discusses his basic philosophy of business and gives several rules, or suggestions, for budding entrepreneurs:
1. The seeds of fortune are close at hand. Stick with what you know, find your niche, and don't be swayed by the allure of "greener pastures."
2. Find out what people want, and fill that need. This sounds obvious, but many entrepreneurs start with a product or service, and then try to find a market for their product or service. Conwell advises finding the market first, then developing a product or service to meet that demand.
3. Make the best possible product and provide them to a large number of people.
"Acres of Diamonds" was first published in 1921. It is still valid today, and provides valuable lessons to anyone attempting to achieve financial success.

I used this book for research and found it to be a most enjoyable read. I am a newly published author of "Embracing Life - Living With Chronic Pain" and am currently writing the sequel to be entitled "Healing Hope" Acres of Diamonds provided me with the material I was trying to verify for my next endeavor.

A divine cordial indeed.......2006-04-29
I'm glad the 2005 Desiring God National Conference whose theme was 'Suffering and the Sovereignty of God' recommends this book. Watson went deep, as he usually did, on all his treatises I have read, this one on Rom 8:28. What is particularly encouraging is where he explained why and how God uses the evil of affliction, abandonment, temptation and sin for the good of the saints in an excellent way, though in some cases he sounds a little redundant and verbose. There is a little flavor of Calvinism when he discussed "for those who have been called according to his purpose.", which makes sense, since Rom 8:28 is the beginning of an elaborate yet robust defense on the doctrine of unconditional election and limited atonement that continues on in chapter 9. I went away happy after reading this book, having drunk a divine cordial of grace and tasted and seen the LORD is indeed good. From him, through him and to Him are all things. To him be glory forever, amen.
God's Wisdom And Power Working In His Providence.......2005-06-26
The eminent Puritan pastor Thomas Watson gives us in 'All Things for Good' an exposition of Romans 8:28. In opening up this portion of God's Word his purpose is to comfort the Lord's people, and help them to see that even in the greatest trials that they will face, God is willing and able to make them work out for their good.
How can the Lord work trials ,both great and small,to bless and help His people? In this masterful treatise Watson shows us how this can be. In the first section of the first chapter we see that it is God's attributes, that being His power,His wisdom and His goodness that are operative in His children's behalf.
The Puritans were master physicians of the soul. One cannot help but think that the depth of their understanding on how God uses affiction and trials in the lives of believers was not just in theory but in large part experiential as well. Just a brief sketch of many of their lives would reveal that to be the case.
They also realized that whatever brings Christians nearer to God was to be seen as an evidence of His love and a desire to abundantly bless them.
A couple of brief quotes will hopefully give a small glimpse of the great depth that is so abundant in the written legacy that the Puritans have left us: p.31"How do afflictions make us happy,we reply that, being sanctified, they bring us nearer to God." p.52" God does not deal alike with all ,He has trials for the strong and cordials for the weak... if God does not give you that which you like,he will give you that which you need."
In Christ's school of learning ,(how the Lord providentially uses affliction, temptation and sin)for the believers good ,the Puritans are masterful teachers, and books such as 'All things for Good' should not be neglected to help instruct us in these important matters.
An Encouraging, Inspiring, and Foundational Book.......1999-11-18
Sometimes things don't see to work right. Sometimes we mess up and feel that things aren't good, but as Thomas Watson so beautifully and wonderfully writes, All Things For Good. If you ever feel that life is not going right, that something is lacking, and that bad seems to dominate, pick up this doctrinally sound book, and allow God to speak to you through it. The teachings in this book are excellent and very informative. Just from reading the first chapter, I couldn't put the book down. It has blessed me emmensly, and I pray that it will bless you too, in ways that it will show you how God works things for good in ANY situation, good or bad, for our blessing, because of His grace and mercy. May the Lord bless you as you read this book. I would also encourage you to buy Watson's other book called, "The Doctrine of Repentence." Which is another wonderful book.
Puritanism at its warmest and best!.......1999-10-12
Do you need encouraging in times of difficulty? This book is for you. Do you need strengthening in your walk with the LORD? This book is for you. Do you need help in everyday living? This book is for you. This book in fact brings to every person great encouragement in the opening up of Romans 8 verse 28. How does the LORD make sin and evil and persecution, and life and death and every other thing work together for good? This little book explains how so simply and gently that you just want to dance and sing for joy. One of my top five books ever- if not the joint top with Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Buy and read. Buy and praise Him.
Book Description
Dubbed "Stonewall" following the battle of First Manassas in July 1861, Thomas Jackson has long been revered as a brilliant military leader and tactician and as one of the most adroit Confederate commanders. The man himself is a study in contrasts: justifiably feared by his enemies and completely beloved by his men.
J. Steven Wilkins examines the life and character of Jackson. His research reveals a man humble and sincere in his Christian faith, which stands in stark contrast with the general's reputation as a ferocious warrior.
Shortly after his graduation from West Point in 1846, Jackson served in the Mexican War in 1848, where he became one of the most decorated heroes of the conflict and received promotion to the brevetted rank of major. He left the army in 1851 to accept a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute, resigning his commission in the army a year later. In 1859 he led a contingent of cadets to maintain order during the trial and ensuing execution of John Brown. When Jackson departed VMI in 1861 to join the Confederate army, he was immediately commissioned a colonel and within months was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. Mortally wounded by friendly fire in May 1863, he "more than anyone else, personified the compelling and the virtuous in what the subsequent generation would label `The Lost Cause'"James I. Robertson Jr.

Great book within a great series........2007-03-14
First let me say that the "Leaders in Action" series is tremendous (check the rest of them out--Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, Teddy Roosevelt, William Wilberforce and more). They are biographies which deal not only with facts, but also with the character and faith of historical figures. Every school age child should read these books and take these role models to heart.
The great thing about this book is that it gives a solid summary of Stonewall Jackson's life and history as well as a thorough examination of his faith and values. If you can believe it, I was almost brought to tears by the account of his death. Especially for Civil War buffs--this is a must read.
Stonewall Jackson and his personal relationship with God.......2006-01-09
This is an excellent look inside the life of Thomas Johnathan "Stonewall" Jackson.
Reverend Wilkins does an excellent job of researching first-hand accounts of the important events that occurred during Jackson's life and how they refined him into the man that God made him.

When God & Cancer Meet
ASIN: 0965538109 |
Book Description
What do you do when you are told you have cancer? What if it's a relative or friend? A diagnosis of cancer can lead to many spiritual, mental, and physical questions.
In this book, All Things Work for Good, Gavin Sinclair tells about his battle with cancer. When Gavin was 24 years old, an X-ray showed a football-size tumor in his chest. He was given four months to live. His wife was pregnant with their first child. Gavin had chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery to cure the cancer. These treatments led to many secondary problems including congestive heart failure, spinal surgery, and a stroke.
In the first section of All Things Work for Good, Gavin tells his story. In the second section, family and friends tell how the experience affected them. In the third section, Gavin outlines 14 lessons that can be helpful to others.
This is not just another dry, technical treatise on dealing with a serious illness. Gavin writes candidly, humorously, and with clarity about a very personal ordeal. As he and others share their stories, you will be touched, enriched, and encouraged by their openness and their very practical suggestions.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Sinclair.......2006-09-07
After reading Gavin Sinclair's book I began buying it for friends or family diagnosed. Then it grew into a gift to friends and family not yet effected by cancer.
He tell a compelling story about his families reaction and living through his sickness. He prepares those diagnosed for what to expect with treatment and it is encouraging to the family as well. Not just the patient goes through treatment, but the family has tough times as well.
A great book by a great man.......2001-09-08
I had the opportunity to know Gavin Sinclair and he was the nicest man that I ever met. His book covers his struggles with cancer and how he pulled through and beat a terminal diagnosis. The complications that he suffered from the cancer may have taken his life in the end, but his determination to survive added nearly a decade to his life when doctors gave him only months to live. In this time he raised two great children and forever changed my life in a positve way. I often think of him driving his little convertible with the custom plate that contained an abreviated "Think Positive" reading this book will show you to keep thinking positive regardless of your situation. If you or a friend of yours is suffering from cancer I highly advise you to purchase this book, it will bring you hope and comfort.
Good but there are better boks out there on the topic.......2000-09-10
I like his writing style but he coul dhave covered some of these topics with a little more examples that could relate to my circumstances and friends going through this now
For anyone facing extreme sadness or tragedy..........2000-05-01
This book is not just for families and individuals facing cancer and survival. It's for anyone facing life's "unfairness" and the extreme sadness that comes into our lives at one time or another. While it is predominantly a Christian based methodolgy, it does offer first hand experience with medical personnel and an approach to manage the disease and all the associated afflictions that occur with any severe illness. This book is a heart wretching and heart warming (sometimes even comical) account of real life drama. It details a positive attitude approach that is enhanced by belief in God that offers a healing of the spirit as well as the body. The author's faith along with the faith of his family demonstrates that God is a source of comfort and relief for everyone: the sick, the dying and the survivors.
Not for everyone.......1999-10-15
I was really excited when I first saw this book but was turned off by the religious content when I actually read it. If you're not Christian (and I'm not), this book is definitely not for you. I'm sure this is a great book if you're Christian but since I'm not, it didn't help me at all.

Shows the way and reasons of Pieper's use of philosophy,.......2002-05-05
This book reads much more like a methodology of how Pieper uses philosophy, and his justifications for his usage, than any of the previous books of his I have read. Pieper defines how modern thought has corrupted much of our vocabulary - in comparison with the Medieaval use - of such words as: truth, reality, knowledge, perception, idea, essence, object, subject, imagine, potential capacity, natural, ideal, cognition, will. He also makes an effort to clear the name of Aquinas, from past abusers of his ideas, Aquinas being the primary philosopher Pieper draws his ideas from. Pieper largely defends Medieaval thought against the Modern. The Modern insignificantly began with Montaigne, significantly started with Decarte, and became rock solid with Kant (each with their legions of followers). Pieper is a defense of what there was before. How what is good in the Western Tradition fundamentaly lays there. The book's points are profound; at their essence the most profound of all of Pieper's books I have read thus far. However, they are also the most abstract and possibly the least accessable to the common reader, such as myself.
Many of Pieper's books read much more as a guide to living a better life, this is not one of them. Abuse of Language Abuse of Power is, as are Leisure the Basis of Culture and The Virtues of the Human Heart - and many of his other books I have not read as of yet. These books are accesible and ones, I believe, that will result in a reader making postive life changes significantly altering one's view of the world for the better, for themselves and their brothers.
Knowledge and Unity.......2000-08-01
Living the Truth is probably the best of Pieper's books. It offers the finest insights into Medieval epistemology available, illuminating philosophy from Plato to Aquinas in a remarkable way. The second part of the book, building on the first, gives completely fesh insights into the basis of moral action, grounded in the knowledge of essences. Perhaps the most significant thing about the book is that it shows what has been lost in Western philosophy since the Enlightenment, where the concern changed from knowledge of essence to empiricism.
As usual with Pieper, the book is written with consumate clarity.
