A sauce for every occasion.......2007-08-11
This book really is "The Complete Book of Sauces". It would be hard to imagine what sauce recipe ISN'T in it. Not only does it contain virtually any kind of sauce recipe you could want, but it offers helpful ideas on what to serve with what. Also, the recipes are "doable" rather than some I've seen in other books that are so complex no one but a professional chef would even attempt them. In addition, the price was right, and it arrived very promptly in pristine condtion.
Excellent.......2007-01-10
Just the book I was looking for! Excellent coverage of sauces for beginners to "old hats"! Thanks!
Numerous variations to try in a lifetime!.......2000-11-06
There are definitely more sauces in this book than you can possibly try. They are divided and arranged by type and purpose, which makes it easy to pick out the sauce that you need. Some of the ingredients are somewhat hard to find, but most recipes can be prepared with minimal fuss. My favorite part of this book is the marinades chapter.. you can combine a marinade with a similar sauce and end up with something spectacular. Another useful chapter is the fruit sauces chapter, which proved to be very valuable on that special occasion when you wanted to enhance the flavor of your desserts. No photos in this book though.
The Complete Book of Sauces.......1999-12-04
This book is excellent, I have had success with every recipe I've tried. I refer to this book almost on a daily basis to make my dishes more interesting. If you buy only one sauce book this is the one to buy.
One simple books adds fun and life to almost any dish........1998-10-10
It's now Oct 1998. I bought the book in 1990 when it first came out. I'm a business man, not a gourmet, but with this Sallie Williams book, polite lovely ladies have almost tackled me to get 'my recipes'. I have fun cooking because of this book, more than with any other cookbook. I pick a meat or vegetable, and pick a sauce. It always works, and leaves me feeling like I'm creating by selecting the combination of some dish with a sauce, plus dreaming up ways to display the food. So far it never seems to get boring, and after nine years there are still a lot of sauces I've not yet tried. I think the book will be with me for the duration. Highly recommended. The only downside is that 'favorite' sauces are easy to find in the book, and thus you have to avoid the temptation to stop exploring sauces not yet experienced.
Book Description
Smitten by a love of hot peppers, journalist Richard Schweid traveled to the capital of the U.S. hot sauce industry, New Iberia, Louisiana. This is Cajun country, and capsicum (as hot peppers are known botanically) thrive in the region's salty, oil-rich soil like nowhere else. At once an entertaining exploration of the history and folklore that surround hot peppers and a fascinating look at the industry built around the fiery crop, Schweid's book also offers a sympathetic portrait of a culture and a people in the midst of economic and social change.
This edition of Hot Peppers has been thoroughly updated and includes some twenty-five recipes for such deliciously spicy dishes as crawfish touffe, jambalaya, and okra shrimp gumbo.

Simply a Must Have Little Sauce Book.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Wangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Sauces" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them, like in this book. You'll have to agree that one part of a good dinner is the sauce you put over the meat, veggies or dessert. Whether it's a sauce based on fish stock, brown or white stock or whether you start with a basic roux or base a sauce on mayonnaise, you'll find the sauce you need here. This little book is a must have for anybody who needs to impress. And let me tell you, if you whip up the Lemon and Mustard Sauce in this book and pour it over asparagus, whoever you're cooking for is going to be impressed. Oh yeah, they'll be impressed, because sauces really set off a meal.

Great book for a beginner.......2007-05-17
I am just learning my way around the kitchen and I've found many cookbooks that use jargon that I am not familiar with. However, this book is great because it explains the definition of certain cooking terms. I've tried several of the recipes and they came out great! The book itself is beautiful and a pleasure to scan throuch and use.

Special chapters are dedicated to oil and vinegar dressings, sour cream dressings, fruit and vegetable dressings, mayonnaise dressings, soft cheese dressings and dips, meat marinades, poultry and game marinades, fish marinades and vegetable marinades. Excellent variety of recipes.......2006-08-23
I enjoyed this book so much I had to purchase one for a friend! The book is inexpensive and I've had fun trying the various recipes to see which ones I liked the best. I also like the fact that some menus had canned items and some were for fresh items.
Not much spice.......2005-08-03
The 180 salsa recipes in this book could be reduced to 12 or so good ones. Many are simply repeats of others in the book with only very slight variations and a different name. I'm glad I got the book, because I will use the 12 good recipes, but don't buy it for 180. You'll be disappointed if you do.
Dynamite IS packed into a small package!.......1999-09-06
People have said powerful things come in small packages. Maybe that's why this "hot" book comes as a small thinner book. Salsa Lovers Cookbook comes with less than 130 pages, but is filled with "more than 180 sensational salsa recipes for appetizers, salads, main dishes & desserts!" Almost every page is filled with at least two recipes and I can't think of another salsa recipe that would possibly be missing from this collection.
This book starts out with an Anatomy of the Chile section with history, cooking ideas, tips and suggestions. The recipes go from an All Canned Salsa to an All Purpose Salsa to recipes like: Cherry Red Salsa; Instant Fire Salsa; New England Salsa; Any Meat Salsa, Avocado Salsa for Fish, Black Bean Salsa; Chili Cheese Salsa; Cucumber & Radish Salsa; Dry Salsa for Seasoning Steaks; Fresh Vegetable Salsa; Holiday Salsa; Madera Salsa; Mango Salsa; Pico de Gallo I through V; Salsa Carne; Salsa por Scallops; Salsa with Bourbon; Sweet Spicy Salsa; Yellow Fruit Salsa; Avocado Salsa for Salads; Salsa for Fruit Salad; Salsa for Watercress Salad; Banana Salsa; Champagne Salsa; Chocolate Salsa I through VI; Coffee Salsa; Orange Peach Salsa; Pineapple Dessert Salsa; Raisin & Rum Salsa; and Wine Salsa for Fruit.
Almost every recipe has ingredient readily available and can be made in only a few minutes. This is one of the only cookbooks that I can remember seeign that has each section in alphabetical order for very easy reference. Some of the recipes, in my opinion, have stretched the definition of Salsa, and some are a little-off-the-wall, however this is one of those fun books to add to your shelf.

You'll Find Some Way, Way Good Fondues in this Delightful Book.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them although one might wonder if it was necessary to devote a whole book to fondue. I know I did at first, but once I got into the book, it quickly became one of my favorites. After all, what better way to start an evening than with a Coke and Rum and some delicious fondue as you watch that lucky old sun fade away. Here you'll find fondues of all stripes and flavors from the Classic Swiss Fondue on Page 10 to the Creamy Kiwi Dip at the end of the book. Almost of these fondues are, as my friend Jack Priest's young son Devon would say, "Way, way good!"
Review Submitted by Captain Katie Osborne
Better title would be dips.......2005-10-11
I was looking for a more traditional fondue cook book and this was not it. It would have been better titled dips. I was very dissapointed. There were more dips rather than true fondue type cooking. Additionally there was very little in the way of directions or clrification. There were lovely pictures though.
Good for Hot Pot Too.......2003-12-27
This book has served me well for both fondue and Mongolian hot pot meals. I would agree that it isn't a book for beginners, as you have to improvise a bit to get exactly what you want. . . but it is good for providing a jumping off point. For those who like to cook meats in broth instead of oil, the book has several simple and tasty recipes for dipping sauces spread throughout the book.
Great introduction........2003-01-29
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Fondues, starts with a brief introduction of the equipment necessary for fondue-making, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of fondues, from cheese to dessert fondues. Special chapters are dedicated to deep-fried fondues, accompaniments, seafood fondues, vegetable fondues, hotpots, vegetable dips and fruit dips. There are also menu suggestions for starters, main courses, accompaniments and desserts; and the book ends with six suggestions for complete menus built around the recipes described here. Classics such as fondue Bourguignonne, Swiss fondue and mushroom fondue appear next to unique dishes such as anchovy mayonnaise, blackcurrant cassis fondue, crab and cheese dip, Drambuie cream fondue, hot berry compote, marshmallow cream fondue, praline fondue, raspberry cream, peppermint fondue, spiced plum puree, fruity duck fondue, and wine and cherry sauce.
From aioli, almandine trout and almond clusters to yellow bean sauce and yogurt dressing, this collection of recipes is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of making a meal out of food dipped into hot oil or a delicious sauce - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended: This series' installments on French provincial cooking, and on crepes and omelets.
Great Book for a Narrow Cooking Category.......2001-04-30
I think some people expected a two-book 1,000 page volume about how to do Fondue when they got this book. For $10 this book is outstanding as every single recipe has color photos and good instructions. I have made 50% of the fondues in the book for entertaining and there was not one that I served to guests that didn't stop all other conversation and make the party a hit. So far, all of the recipes have been unbelievably delicious and unique. This was my first experiment with "The Book Of..." cooking series and made me look at the other 50 or so titles. The book assumes that you have some basic knowledge of cooking.

Great For the devout Chileheads.......1998-03-24
I love the book mainly for the descriptions of the many hot sauces listed, as well as a look at the actual bottles. As a collector, it has helped me save a bit of time looking around the shelves for some of the sauces. The only drawback to this book is that while there is a listing of some of the hot sauce catalogs, there is little information on actually contacting the manufacturers. After scouring several catalogs I still can't find a some of the sauces in the book. Overall, I'd heartily recommend it to other hotheads and fans of the fire.
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas!.......2005-11-08
This book is a collection of ideas about how do dress your pasta. It begins with a short introduction to pasta, describing different types of pasta, how to cook the pasta, how to mix the sauce in, how to serve the pasta, how to eat pasta (table manners), ingredients, and equipment. The remainder of the book is recipes organized into the following sections: quick sauces, cheese and egg sauces, tomato sauces, vegetable sauces, seafood sauces, meat and poultry sauces, and pasta salads.
The recipes tend to be simple yet creative. Warner is not afraid of dreaming up new combinations of ingredients to pour on her pasta, such as caviar and lemon, or oranges and olives. In addition to these wild sauces, she also includes recipes for old standards, such as spaghetti and meatballs, and alfredo sauce. While most ingredients called for in the recipes are fresh, Warner notes where canned or dried will work just as well. After reading this book, I begin to get the idea that all you really need to do is grab 2 or 3 three fresh ingredients, cook them (or simply slice them up) with some garlic and olive oil, add the pasta, and presto! There's dinner! That seems to be Warner's underlying advice.
A Must for your cookbook shelf.......2003-01-23
I bought this book many years ago and have used it so much that some pages are marked with sauce and personal notes that I have tailored to my family's taste buds. This cookbook deserves 5 stars and if you can find it, buy it!!
An excellent cookbook!.......1999-07-23
If you're not worried about low-fat pasta sauce recipes, and want to make some delicious, beautiful pasta dishes, this book is perfect. I have tried more than half of the sauces and every single one has met praise. Great pesto, chicken and artichoke pasta and some of the tried and true cream and marinara sauces. Fabulous for company. I have had to buy many copies of this book to give to friends because I got tired of writing out recipes.
