Great book to get.......2006-07-11
For me , it was really a very good choice to get this book, and I recommend it to averyone who has to follow a special diet for diabetic, and also anyone who want to learn to eat better.
Great info and recipes made with real food.......2005-09-29
I was impressed with the extent of information about diabetes and cooking that preceeded all of the recipes. What a great resource this has turned out to be for me. I have enjoyed several of the recipes very much and was especially pleased to find that they include more nutritional analysis than other cookbooks I have (including saturated fat, sugars and fibre). Lots of recipes low in fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol and lots of real, whole food instead of processed foods and chemicals. I think this book was worth every cent and recommend it.
Thumbs up from me and my mom.......2005-08-31
My mother loves it and I love it too. I first ordered this book as a gift for my mother who has type 2 diabetes. After enjoying the recipes that she made, I went ahead and picked up a copy for myself at the local store seeing as I can use a good dose of healthy eating. Of the main dishes we tried, I found the servings to be quite filling and the recipes were easy enough to make. I also found the sections about diabetes to be very helpful and easy to understand. Hopefully I'll be able to avoid getting diabetes like my mom by following the advice of cookbooks like this. Definitely gets a thumbs up from us.
Good for elves..........2005-08-13
I think the recipes are fairly good; however, the serving sizes are a joke. FOUR raspberries to split among FOUR people for a dessert with raspberry in the name? ONE olive per person in a salad... gimme a break. Other 'BIG serving' recipes allow one cup of soup, or one half a sandwich. I don't believe in super-sized servings, but I do think more than three bites is appropriate. And, of course, if you eat more than the suggested serving, then the nutritional information isn't really all that useful, is it.
Great Recipes for all........2005-06-21
I bought this book and have made at least 20-30 of the recipes. I have enjoyed all of them. My favorite has to be the "Refreshing Spring Tabbouleh". The Diabetic Gourmet Cookbook has a variety of recipes for all types of food styles: Mexican, Italian, Southwestern, American, Asian. I highly suggest that if you are a diabetic, that you buy this book. You won't regret it. And even if you aren't a diabetic, the food is delicious and healthy!

Great Resource For Losing Weight.......2004-01-07
I've had this cookbook for over a year and it is without doubt the best one in my collection. The recipes are easy to follow and taste great. I've tried numerous ones over the year and every one I've tried has come out perfectly! In addition, there are pages of tips on how to prepare foods that any cook can find helpful. As part of a total weight loss program, this book is a must!
A Treasury of Tips, Charts and Yummy Recipes!.......2002-07-03
This is a great reference for people wanting to cook a little healthier. There are a host of suggestions on how to convert existing recipes to a lower fat menu and there are many illustrations to support the many tips and charts. You will learn how to substitute lower fat ingredients for butter and oil without compromising the taste of your food. The authors discuss the many types of rice, flour, grains, herbs, spices etc. and guide you in selecting the appropriate one for your particular needs. In short, this book is a cooking class in healthy living. Buy this one...you will use it often!
P.S. Weight Watchers' clients will particularly like this book. The nutritional information necessary for calculating Winning Points is included with every recipe and you will have a huge number of dishes that you may prepare within your program.
Low-fat Gourmet cooking?.......2001-12-29
This book is fantastic. Everything tastes like gourmet cooking.
Some of the recipes are fairly simple while others are not. This book is great for people who love to cook and want low-fat alternatives that taste great. Fair warning though this isn't one of those quickie meal recipe books. It is the best cookbook I own, regardless of the low-fat. It gives tons of information on exotic as well as common ingredients. It is a great gourment recipe book as well as instructional cooking book. Not only does this book tell you how to cook everything (poultry, seafood, vegetables, desserts, etc.) it also includes a nice sampling of international recipes for added flair, Spinach/cheese enchiladas, Greek Moussaka, Squash stuffed with Mediterranean grains, to name just a few. You won't get bored.

You feel like you are doing something right for your family. Highly recommend for beginner cooks also--has lots of helpful hints..

Customer Reviews:
outdated.......2006-12-31
I was very disappointed in this book. Much of the information has been outdated by new findings in nutrition. If you eat healthy already, then this is not for you..you will learn nothing new. I've been making these substitutions for years.
One Complaint...........2006-04-23
This is a great cookbook, I use it frequently and for the most part have good success. However, the nutrition information for each recipe is lacking, protein/sodium amounts are not listed and the fat content is not broken down. Other than that, it's a great book.
Just had to write a reveiw about my favorite Cookbook..........2006-01-14
An avid reader, I don't write reviews about any books, none-the-less the "Cooking" kind. We ladies who love to cook and eat are prone to buying many cookbooks only to be disappointing and donated to the local Thrift Store. But the pages of this one, and the sequel, "More, Healthy Homestyle Cooking" are well worn and lovingly revisited nearly every day. They are unique in that they teach you a different way of making meals that are not only easy and healthy but, as many others here have said, taste absolutely delicious.
If you like Mexican try the "Easy Cheesy Chili Relleno Casserole" and "Split Pea Guacamole" (yes it HAS avacados in it) and the consistancy is actually superior to the regular. I love Italian food and the "Chicken Cacciatore", "Eggplant Parmigiana", "Chicken Marsala" and "Italian Eggplant and Rice Bake" are out of this world. Equally good are things like "Hoppin' John", "Pork Chop Suey", "Chinese Chicken Salad" and "Carrot and Raisin Salad". I could go on and on.
Like others here, I've given copies of this Cookbook to many friends and family who have raved about the finished products. I can guarantee won't be disappointed.
I use this book quite a bit.......2005-10-16
Great ideas to make all recipes healthier. Many items I have made are terrific. There have been a few recipes I would not repeat but the overall success rate is quite high.
I use these recipes atleast twice a week...........2005-04-26
My boyfriend and I enjoy cooking dinner together and this cookbook is our favorite. It has so many really hearty, satisfying recipes and we reference it constantly. There is an excellent chart at the beginning that will help you with interesting and sometimes unusual substitutes. All of the recipes have been very easy to follow and I think would be great for a first time or beginner cook.
The Curried Chicken Divan and the Cheesy Artichoke Chicken Bake are 2 of our favorites. You will love these and NEVER miss the fat or calories. She has a great recipe for making Tostito chips that you'll never guess is fat free. Also, be sure to check out her 2nd book.

Easy, healthy American cooking!.......2006-11-24
As a fan of Americana and good, home-cooked meals, I was looking for a book like this for a while, and found it here. Almost any well-known American meal/sidedish/dessert is included in the 200 recipes, and the fact that the author has tried to make them low in fat is even better. Each recipe also includes a small paragraph of extra information, which is interesting to read.
Healthy Easy Recipies.......2006-07-26
I was impressed with the ease of putting the recipies together, and amazed that low fat could taste so GOOD! This is a great cookbook !
For any health conscious kitchen cookbook collection.......2003-03-08
Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy is a throughly impressive and "kitchen cook friendly" compilation of two hundred classic American dishes recreated in a low-fat format but still retaining all the original flavor of higher-calory, higher-fat versions of years past. From Carrot-Raisin Salad; Twice-Baked Potatoes; Scampi with Spaghetti; and Chicken Croquettes; to Chicken-Fried Steak with Country Gravy; Crunch Grain Waffles; Lobster and Broccoli Stir-Fry; and Black Bottom Pie, the recipes comprising Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy live up to the promise of lower fat content with no sacrifice to taste. Each recipes comes with a "Homestyle Makeover" side-bar showcasing before and after calorie and fat gram counts. Homestyle Cooking Made Healthy is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to any health conscious kitchen cookbook collection!
Good Food For Anyone.......2001-08-11
I was reciently diagnosed with high cholestrol. I've been haunting the library for cookbooks for food I can eat. This book was sitting on the shelf and reached out and grabbed me. Fried chicken and gravey, wow. This works for me, so I just ordered a copy.

fair.......2007-05-14
I thought there would be more unique recipes using more vegetables (ie; Spagettie squash, broccoli rabe, etc) and variety of beans not just substituting dairy for soy cheeses.
everyday Italian meals.......2007-01-09
Has a nice variety of Italian meals, some more involved recipes, but very tasty.
Much better Italian cookbook than I expected, and I am tough critic on Italian cookbooks.......2006-05-29
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. I am also very tough on Italian cookbooks in particular.
My husband and decided to try a vegan lifestyle about 3 months ago to reduce cholesterol. However, having to give up many of our favorite Italian foods was extremely difficult. Thankfully, as I was beginning to consider adding dairy back to our menu I found this book. It is a much better Italian cookbook than I expected it to be.
The book is outlined as follows:
1. Italian Cuisine
2. Ingredients and Equipment for Italian Cooking
3. Basic Recipes and Techniques
4. Sauces
5. Appetizers, Vegetable Side Dishes
6. Making Fresh Pasta
First Courses (Primi Piatti)
7. Pasta in Sauce
8. Stuffed Pasta: Dumplings, Crepes, and Baked, Layered and Molded Pasta Dishes
9. Pasta in Broth and Soups
10. Cornmeal and Rice Dishes
Second Courses (Secondi Piatti)
11. Baked Dishes: Omelets, Savory Cakes, Tarts, Gratins, and other Vegetable Casseroles
12. Vegetable and Bean Entrees and Stews
13. Meat Free Entrees
14. Bread, Rolls, Pizza, Hearth Breads and Stuffed Breads
15. Sweets
Some of the basic recipes that the author includes are: Tofu Ricotta, Tofu Mascarpone, Tofu Ricotta Salata, Almond Ricotta, Soy Free Almond Ricotta Salata, Cashew Mascarpone, Tofu version of Heavy Cream, Vegetarian Burger, Vegetarian Hot Italian Sausage, Vegetarian Sweet Fennel Sausage, Seitan (Beef, Veal, Chicken, Pork, Burger, Hot Italian Sausage versions). She also includes a number of different variations for Polpetti (meatballs).
Many of the recipes included in this book are time consuming. However, this is no different than standard Italian homemade items. I don't recommend this book to people that have limited time or limited experience with Italian cooking.
Bottom line, this is a much better cookbook than I expected it to be. Can I tell it isn't meat and/or dairy? Absolutely I can tell the difference. The author's variations are satisfactory substitutes if the alternative is the unpleasant health effects that come with the regular consumption of high fat animal products. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone that loves Italian food and wants to cut back on his or her consumption of saturated fat.
Time-consuming but tasty vegan cooking.......2006-01-29
I was looking for another vegan cookbook to add to my collection and chose this b/c of my Italian heritage. Everything looks wonderful and tasty but also very time-consuming. As a mother, I don't have enough time to make my own pasta. Also, several recipes call for other recipes in the ingredients so you are really making 3 or 4 different things and then mixing them into one dish. Not an easy thing to do, but obviously real Italian food is never quick to prepare. All in all, it's good but I'd look for a less time-consuming one next time.
Great dairy alternatives!.......2004-11-19
I must admit that I haven't tried out all the recipes in this book so far. But the vegan tiramisu is so outstanding, that even if it was the only tasty recipe, this book would be worth it!!! My non vegan friends can't believe it is made without dairy and request me to make it for birthdays and other celebrations. When I became vegan I thought I would never be able to eat tiramisu again, but thanks to Bryanna I can enjoy my favourite dessert again! I can`t wait to try the nondairy cheese fillings!

Great Healthy Recipes that (Most) folks will like.......2007-03-14
These are more kid-pleasers and for those who aren't real experimental in food tastes, but for basic "comfort food" there are some good recipes. My one complaint is that some of them take a while to make, and there's no time estimates on the recipes-- so read them carefully and think about what you have time for. Otherwise, very good.
Delicious Meals!.......2007-02-26
I have searched and searched for a cookbook like this one! In the past, I have tried substituting low fat ingredients on old recipes and it never really tasted right. Evelyn's cookbook makes delicious low fat, reduced calorie meals soooo easy to make. The big surprise is that my husband really loves everything we've made from this cookbook. As a comparison he has never been fond of Weight Watcher recipes. I'm ordering all her cookbooks. I think the food is much better than any of my other cookbooks. By the way, I am an avid reader and I read reviews on Amazon all the time but this is the first time I have ever written one!
Outstanding!.......2006-10-18
I have tried at least five recipes from this book (one twice already), and they've been wonderful. I'm never organized enough to use recipes, but I find myself going through this book before I go grocery shopping so I can plan my meals. I love that these recipes are health-conscious, but still delicious, and easy! The photos make me hungry, and are great for getting ideas. I've got many more recipes earmarked to try soon. What a find!
healthy and easy!.......2006-04-04
I recently bought this cookbook and I'm glad I did. I often find myself trying to figure out what to make for dinner each night. These recipes are pretty healthy and VERY easy to make. I appreciate a cookbook that uses everyday ingredients and the results are family friendly. I have two small children and they have enjoyed the dishes I have made using this book. Try the polenta lasagna (my family had never heard of this before) we loved it!
More healthy homestyle cooking.......2005-09-13
Evelyn Tribble does a good job again. Her first book is a masterpiece and is sadly out of print. This one takes a little different angle than the first one.
Book Description
Mashed potatoes and gravy, macaroni and cheese, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, soup...these are the comfort foods we crave—but many of us are afraid to eat them because of their high fat and calorie content. Now, thanks to Elaine Magee, we can eat our favorite comfort foods in a healthful way!
Comfort Food Makeovers provides 116 easy, mouthwatering recipes for your favorite comfort foods that are full of flavor and texture yet healthy enough to eat anytime.
Magee, the author of
Fry Light, Fry Right! truly knows how to cook the healthy way, and she is on a mission to teach the world how to use ingredients and techniques to lighten a recipe without losing the flavor: incorporate reduced-fat ingredients, boost the fiber, and always cut down on serving sizes. She keeps us tempted with main dishes such as American Meatloaf and Butter-Baked Chicken, savory side dishes such as Potatoes with Leeks and Gruyere, and decadent desserts such as One-Bowl Brownies and Triple Chocolate Decadence Cookies. The delicious recipes in
Comfort Food Makeovers will make you think twice before eating the full-fat, full-calorie versions of your favorite comfort foods ever again!
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional Cook Book!.......2006-08-16
I purchased this book because I've been looking for heathly alternatives for my family. The use of detailed comparisions for nutrients is incredibly helpful and there are so many useful tips for cutting back on fat and calories! I never imagined I could make a healthy and delicious chicken pot pie. Elaine shows that you can still enjoy old fashioned comfort foods and not feel guilty about it. The format is simple to follow and there is a great variety of recipes.
A new family favorite!.......2006-08-12
I am new Elaine Magee fan with regards to her general cook books (have and loved her What to Eat for Headaches book) so I can only speak to this cook book, but I love her cooking style! I personally DON'T want cookbooks by chefs. I end up spending twenty dollars on the book only to make one or two recipes only. Chef's only have two things in mind...looks and taste. They don't care about making the recipe easy and convenient and healthful. Elaine does this oh so well. The other reviewer totally missed the point. This isn't a book about fancy food, it's a book about making over America's favorite comfort foods to be as healthful as possible. I have personally made 10 dishes so far from the book and not only did I love them, so did my kids who can be so hard to please! Somehow Elaine has managed to make the recipes over so they still taste great but with fewer calories and less saturated fat. You can see the "before" and "after" nutritional analysis for yourself on every page. Thanks Elaine for another wonderful and practical book.
Leave the cooking to the chefs.......2006-07-30
I find it fascinating that publishers aren't catching on that nutritionists don't make food that's in the ballpark of chefs. If you want a healthy cookbook, buy one from a trained chef who specialized in healthy food. This is a perfect example. Good idea, terrible execution (meaning the finished dishes leave much to be desired).
Disappointing.......2006-07-28
I really expected this book to be pretty good. The recipe titles are enticing and some of Elaine Magee's other books are better (not the best out there, but definitely better). She must have had a tight deadline or she was bored or something on this one because the food is mediocre at best. You can find so many better (and even healthier) versions of the same dishes online for free.
Cooks will want this for their home collections.......2006-05-25
Usually there are two answers to old favorite recipes which have long been packed in calories and fat as well as comfort: abstain or modify until it's entirely. So it's refreshing to find COMFORT FOOD MAKEOVERS: HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES TO YOUR FAVORITE HOMESTYLE DISHES does neither: it modifies dishes to omit the calories - but not the original comforting tastes. From a leaner Beef Shepherd's Pie which uses a lean sirloin roast and fat-free half-and-half to a light version of the classic cream-laden Fettuccine Alfredo - truly an achievement, done with light cream cheese, divided whole milk or fat-free half and half, and butter or substitute - all dishes retain their original appeal while boasting makeovers that work. While plastic comb binding may not make for durable library lending long-term, it will delight cooks who will want this for their home collections.

kudos to losing weight for diabetics.......2004-01-06
this cookbook by jenny craig is fantastic. i am on jenny craig right now and while i am not diabetic, it does run in the family; better safe than sorry. so far i have used the french toast recipe and the ground beef recipe. it offers advice/exchanges on carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, meats and their substitutes, fruits and veggies and a new category. OTHER. i highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight and is diabetic or has family members who are diabetic. THIS BOOK EXPLAINS HOW CARBOHYDRATES CAN AFFECT BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS FOR DIABETICS. to me that is more important than a low carb fad diet. there has to be meaning to it. this puts it into perspective.

Nutritionist Evelyn Tribole pares calories, cholesterol and fat from her recipes for pretty much any decadent dessert you might want. Healthy Homestyle Desserts includes recipes for Double Chocolate Chip Brownies, Key Lime Pie, Tiramisu and White Chocolate Mousse, as well as cheesecakes and more while keeping the indulgent pleasures. Tribole also offers shrewd ways you can cut the fat and calories from your own favorite sweets. To clearly explain ways to "cheat effectively," there are even tables showing how to substitute ingredients. Tribole also provides a section on how to avoid the problems commonly encountered in making healthier desserts. Glowing photos show how tempting the results can be.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as her first book!.......2003-04-19
I love the original Healthy Homestyle Cooking and use it constantly -- however, I've always thought the sweets and baked goods were the weakest part of the cookbook. And unfortunately that problem is magnified in this book. She cuts too much fat and salt out of everything, and the flavor and texture of the final products really suffer. Most of her muffins and quick breads are either rubbery and tough, or dense and soggy, because she replaces every last drop of oil or butter with applesauce. Also, H.H. Desserts has many repeats within itself as well as repeats from her first book. The same cheesecake and muffin recipes are repeated again and again, with just a tiny change in flavorings, fruit, name, etc. AND -- rather importantly -- sometimes the calorie savings from her "makeovers" are so small that it's not worth the huge compromise in taste and texture. I mean, sometimes her cookie "makeovers" only shave about 20 calories per cookie -- but they definitely don't taste as good as the original. And did anyone notice that many of the muffins are jumbo-sized? That's to make the calorie and fat savings look more dramatic.
For best results with Tribole's muffin and quick bread recipes, always add about 1/2 teaspoon salt, a few tablespoons of oil (in addition to the applesauce she calls for), and when she calls for two egg whites, use a whole egg instead. You'll get far better results and you'll still have a healthy, low-fat product. And you won't waste mountains of egg yolks, which I think is criminal!
I didn't believe it either!.......1999-01-29
This book will totally surprise you. I know something about cooking, so I was convinced that removing some of the butter, oil, eggs, etc., would render many of these sweet recipies inedible. But then I bought this and tried some of these "healthy homestyle desserts" after I bought Tribole's other book, STEALTH HEALTH. All I can tell you is the woman is a magician. And she made me feel like one, too! If you don't believe me, just take her Chocolate Turtle Pecan Cookies to your next church bake sale and watch the reaction.
Pleasure in sweets without excess guilt!.......1998-10-14
I believe Carbohydrates are the bigges dieting problem but we all need to satisfy our sweet teeth! Here are some wonderful recipes which are fun to do, try and enjoy without guilt, guilt and too many calories. Enjoy your treats, you deserve them!
AMAZING.......1998-08-26
This low fat/non fat dessert cook book makes desserts that taste better than the ones with all the fat and the calories. I give this book 2 thumbs up and highly suggest it. Each recipe has a label telling you the fat and calorie content of a serving which is very helpful. It's a real must have!
