Although the wedding cake is usually one of the last details engaged couples settle on before the big day, it's just as important for setting the tone and style of the celebration as the flowers or the invitations. An elegant, towering Croquembouche studded with golden almonds and wrapped in clouds of spun sugar sends a different message than a rich-looking Gianduja Truffle Cake decorated with fresh fruit and dusted with gold powder or a White Chocolate Satin Apricot Cake adorned with flowers (click to see photos). Chef Dede Wilson believes that wedding cakes should be aesthetically pleasing, but above all should "reflect the tastes, beliefs, and desires of the bridal couple." With the aim of creating cakes that taste as good as they look, Wilson lends her expertise and creative spirit to the marvelous constructions in The Wedding Cake Book.
As much a cookbook as a source of inspiration, The Wedding Cake Book takes bakers--novices and experts alike--step by step through the process of conceptualizing, baking, assembling, and decorating wedding cakes of all levels of difficulty. Each recipe page includes the components needed to make the pictured cake (layers, fillings, decorating accouterments, equipment); the number of servings; the level of difficulty (easier, moderate, or complex); and the recipe and preparation instructions. Other chapters cover finishing touches, cake accompaniments such as sauces and fillings, equipment, and resources for special ingredients or professional equipment. Bakers looking for detailed instructions and delicious recipes and brides seeking ideas for the perfect cake for their postnuptial celebration will find what they're after in The Wedding Cake Book.

The Wedding Cake Book Review.......2007-01-12
This has to be one of the best books on the market for special event cakes and especially wedding cakes. Ms. Wilson gives many great tips and "how to's" along with some wonderful cake recipes and mouth-watering illustrations. This book is a must for any cake baker.
Creative, unique, and easy to bake recipes.......2006-11-14
I've had the opportunity to try three of the recipes in this book and every single one has turned out fabulously. The range of cake recipes is fantastic, and most are easy to prepare. I live in a major city, so getting ingredients like cake flour, which some readers have said is difficult, is easy for me. I agree with many of the reviews which say this book isn't really about cake decorating. That's true. But don't most of us have hundreds of cake decorating books and pictures? I want my cakes to taste as good as they look. Starting with a foundation of moist, delicious, unique cakes from this book will make any cake design spectacular.
Tonight I made the Honey Maple Carrot Cake and my house smells fantastic. I'll be trying the Pumpkin cake for Thanksgiving. I'm sure they'll be as wonderful as the other ones I've tried already.
The Wedding Cake Book by Dede Wilson.......2006-07-25
I thought this book with very average... It just seemed to be the some kind of work though out the book.
It was NOT what I had expected at all!.......2006-03-15
I had expected to see more ideas for wedding cakes and these were NOT something people in my circle would make or eat! When writing a book like this, ALL types of readers should be considered.

In a nutshell...........2006-08-17
This cd was very easy to navigate. It required no lengthy installation onto my computer. JUST READ THE DESCRIPTION AND MAKE SURE THAT YOUR COMPUTER IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE CD!!!!! I checked out this sellers negative feedback before I purchased and all of it was because the customer was too ignorant to simply read the description and make sure that their computer was compatible before buying the CD.
As for the content, I can't even imagine how much money I would have spent on magazines trying to put together all of these images and ideas while I am deciding on decorations and other details for my wedding. The CD is well worth your money. With bridal magazines costing on average of $9, this CD pays for itself in the money it will save you.
I recommend it for any bride.

Rhyming Repetitious For Beginning Readers .......2006-10-23
Highlights the sound of long a with the repetitive, "while Jake baked the cake." Also highlights the days of the week as everyone (the vicor, tailor, the jewler, the bridesmades, etc.) prepares for a wedding until they all finally get to "eat the cake that is the pride and joy of Master Baker Jake" Wonderful illustrations. Appears to be a seaside village in France.
Had it memorized.......2006-04-25
Our family read and recited this book "one more time" every night for a long time when my three kids were young. Our copy is tattered and i'm replacing it and stocking up for (future) grandkids. Though i don't want to handle the damaged pages any more, i can still tell you that the bridesmaids' roses tickled their noses and the ushers' ties were all the wrong size. But cover your ears when Mrs. King begins to sing!
Jake Baked the Cake.......2000-07-15
What a joy of a book. The illustrations are so soft and beautiful and really help to tell the story, as they should. The story is about a town getting ready for a wedding. There's just a line or two on each page, and they rhyme, periodically reverting to, "while Jake baked the cake". Both boys and girls 7 and under should enjoy this. My five year boy included.
A toddler favorite.......1998-06-24
"The bride's gown was made in town/the groom's pants arrived from France/the champagne came from Spain/while Jake baked the Cake!" As everyone in town gets ready for a big church wedding, we keep checking in on baker Jake, who isn't quite finished with the fancy wedding cake. Will he finish in time? Toddlers cheer him on by chiming in with the chorus "Jake baked the cake!" A delightful picture book to prepare youngsters for all the preparations that precede a wedding.

Take it for what it is.......2006-06-20
First of all, this is not a book for those of you who want to learn how to decorate cakes. This is a book for the bride who wants to learn about the right cake to ORDER. My cover matched the one shown so, maybe the book has a couple different covers, not a big deal. Anyway, I enjoyed the book but, if you are looking for a how-to on how to bake and decorate your own cake, this is not for you.
Not very good at all.......2005-11-05
I liked the cake on the cover (which happens to be the same cover listed on amazon.com) but the photos inside were horrible. They were very fuzzy and you couldn't see the detail of the cakes that well. The cakes were just okay, nothing fabulous to look at.
Worst book on cake decorating I've ever seen.......2004-06-23
The pictures are sloppy and amateurish. The editorial is very inaccurate. The author/editor appears to have done little or no research and clearly does not know the first thing about cake decorating. There are so many great cake decorating books out there. Don't waste your money on this one.
Note to the idiot from Ilford, England whose review suggests that this is a bad book because it only features American bakers instead of British bakers: there are plenty of books that only feature American style cake decorating which are GREAT. There are two different styles: british decorating covers everything with some sort of rolled icing and cement-tasting flowers. American usually uses soft, piped icings. Both styles can be incredibly complex in their own way and require great skill. This reason this book is bad is not because it is a typical example of american skill, as you sugggest. It's bad because it's NOT typical. The author wasn't really interested in showcasing the best examples.
Come on...is not so bad!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-21
The cover of this book does not match the one above...but does that really matters?????!!!!!!!! Is a nice cover anyway. The pictures inside???....I dont see anything wrong in them!!!!!!!
Give this book a chance. The designs of the cakes could have been better but the bakers featured are not british..at the end of the day the book shows the kind of work american bakers do.
THIS??? Is the book I ordered???.......2004-02-20
I have been buying from Amazon for years, and this is the first review I have written... and NOT to rave about this purchase, but to convey my disappointment. I was expecting a more professional book... this is certainly not it... I also decorate cakes, and was confused as to how this one got the description it did.... and yes... WHY IS THE COVER OF THE BOOK NOT PROVIDED??? The picture here is located way in the back of the book, and is much smaller... I also thought I received the wrong book... I have to say, that the picture they did choose to advertise the book was the best of the bunch.... so just look at this picture and forget the book.

cake decorating guide.......2007-10-06
recieved on time and in the description I ordered. I am pleased with my order
Multi-pack of introductory manuals.......2007-07-11
I was pleasantly surprised to order what I thought was 1 book and receive a 6-pack of these 40-page booklets. These would make great gifts for friends interested in learning the basics. It covers baking, leveling, stacking, icing the cakes; preparing the cake board, making and coloring buttercream and royal icings, preparing bags, filling with icing; bag position; decorating with various tips (round, star, petal, leaf). Then it gives instructions for specific projects including a bear cake, fish cake, swirl-topped cake, lettering, cupcakes, clown cake, balloon cake, star cake, castle cake, flower/heart cake, baseball cake, big cookie.
First Time at Cake Decorating.......2007-07-05
This was my first time at cake decorating and I was determined that this summer would be the summer for this project. I searched for several books, but in the end the cheapest book I bought (this one) was the one that I turned to when I wasn't sure about the process. It also gave me the confidence to get creative.

A wee little jewel ..........2005-03-11
... and an absolute favorite in my collection, just for inspiration (which is, honestly, about all it's good for).
But that's no small thing: there is great variety in terms of styles within and the photography, while admittedly small, is clear and good. Several of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen are included.
Come on, you hard reviewers, you! It's dirt cheap and utterly adorable, and I'd argue very good value for your money. After all, no single cake decorating book on its own will provide you everything you need and want, and this is no exception. Still, it's WELL worth adding to a collection.
And unless your bookends have really huge holes in them, it DOES stand up on the bookshelf ... I swear.
Perfect for bridal showers.......2002-10-10
Great little book with glossy pictures of many contemporary wedding cake designs. Nice for brides-to-be or decorator/designers alike to get the imagination going. Also has some neat information on the history of wedding cakes. A friend of mine used these as bridal shower table gifts
Tiny, but good.......2001-06-20
Despite other reviewers' complaints, the size of this is listed if you're paying attention!
Meanwhile, even though the size is bizarre and I can't quite understand what the point of it is, this is a nicely put together little book with some very nice, generally inspiring photos. Thoroughly worth the price!
Wish I would of known.......2000-10-17
I wish I would of known I needed a microscope to see this book. I needed a book to get some ideas for cake styles and I can barely see the cake let alone the details. It should have the book size in the description.
Not exactly what you think.......2000-02-01
I would have liked to have known that Beverly Clark Minis meant the book was the size of about 15 credit cards stacked high. The cakes look good, but because the book is so small (smaller than the palm of your hand) details are hard to make out. I can't put this on my bookshelf. It goes straight to the bottom of my purse, along side my lost mirror.

Sugarcraft Wedding Cakes.......2002-10-10
Attention to detail and perfection in execution are the trademarks of the cakes featured in The Ultimate Book of Wedding Cakes by Lesley Herbert. In this picture-filled book, Herbert features over 30 original wedding cake designs.
Herbert features a variety of wedding cakes in this book. The techniques that she features for decorators are rolled fondant (sugarpaste), royal icing, pattern transfer, piped embroidery, color flow collars (floodwork), and frills. While the majority of cakes are coated in marzipan and sugarpaste, she also includes a cake done in buttercream and a cake covered in a white chocolate ganache. The most valuable part of the book for me was the 14 pages of templates at the back of the book. The embroidery templates are simple, classic, and elegant.
The strengths of this book are in the detailed instructions Herbert provides on how to reproduce these cakes. From the templates to pictures of stages of construction, these instructions are clear and well-written. All of the metrics provided have been converted to inches for decorators outside of the UK. In the Acknowledgements section, Herbert provides a list of suppliers that were used in the creation of this book. Herbert also has included 4 pages on pillars and stands featured in the book.
While Herbert sets the expectations of anyone using this book, it is a good resource for advanced decorators. The step-by-step instructions and detailed photographs will make sense to experienced cake professionals and enthusiasts.
elegant and inspirational.......2000-05-01
I feel that this book is very good for anybody who has an interest in sugarcraft, wheather they are a beginner or an expert. All the cake designs in the book are rated for ability and each design has clear and concise step-by-step instructions and photographs. The book is full of elegant ideas, non of which are too flouncy and over-the-top. Besides wedding cake designs, the author also dedicates a chapter on cake pillars and stands, which is useful information when constructing the wedding cake. Over-all I am very pleased with this purchase and I find the book to be very inspirational.

It's so dang cute!.......1998-07-18
I really liked this book because not only did it give a short history lesson behind traditional wedding etiquette, it also showed us some very different and unusual styles of cakes. I liked the quilt-design cake but others I showed it to thought it was tacky. Needless to say it's an interesting design. This little pocket book will come in handy, I'm sure, when it is my turn to take my final stroll as a single woman. But who knows when that will be. . .I'm still 20!
