Book Description

At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust.

5 out of 5 stars LOVED this book!.......2007-10-03

My husband is diabetic and I have been trying hard to find recipes that are good and quick and easy. I FINALLY found a GREAT cookbook that does that! (leave it to Betty Crocker!) I grew up with the same Betty Crocker cookbook that was passed down from my grandmother to my mother and so on... and now Betty has done it again! These recipes are wonderful, and easy to use! I just wish there were more Diabetic cookbooks by Betty Crocker! This is a GREAT book to have!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Diabetes Cookbook Ever!.......2007-10-02

The Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook is just as fantastic as the regular Betty Crocker Cookbook. The pictures are mouth-watering, the recipes are easy to follow, and they taste wonderful! My husband, who is diabetic, found it hard to believe they were from a diabetes cookbook. If you are diabetic and buy just one cookbook, buy this one!! If you don't have diabetes but are trying to eat healthy, this is the book for you. I recommend it whole heartedly!

1 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook.......2007-09-27

Nothing at all wrong with the finished food. But the book is only good if you are rich and have plenty of time to shop. The women who presented the meals obviously fit into both categories. If they were just regular people (like the name, Betty Crocker, is supposed to represent) they would not have said that these are quick and easy to prepare.

4 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook: Everyday Meals, Easy as 1-2-3.......2007-08-24

Whether you are diabetic or not, this cookbook has some great meals that are easy to cook and taste good too.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-14

I really liked this cookbook. I was impressed by the speed at which it arrived at my door. For a "used" book it was in excellent condition. Thanks!!!

5 out of 5 stars Companion DVD rocks my world!.......2007-10-05

I bought the cookbook in conjunction with the companion DVD (sold separately). Personally, I see the cookbook as mere support for the video instruction. Bought alone--it would seem overly simplistic and even possibly frustrating that various recipes overlap. As support for the DVD explanation it makes perfect sense. Considering the set is for beginners in the raw food lifestyle it is absolutely fantastic. For people who already know all about juicing and vegetable preparation--it can seem a little trite at times--but for the average American ignorant to all things raw--the dvd helps you understand without feeling stupid or lost in strange new vocabularies and unusual foods.
I would have to say--for anyone who complains about the cost of the machines often used in raw fooding--sell your stove--and that alone will more than pay for any and all raw food supplies. That's what I did.
I have a juicer, dehydrator, blender, citrus juicer, food processor, water distiller,etc...all for far less than my old stove. I wouldn't buy this item without the DVD. Together they are a magical pair, great for an experienced raw foodist like myself and for sharing with all my friends who wonder how I can survive and thrive on a raw food diet. The information is practical for a busy life on the go, full of variety and unique flavors without complexity, fast, and tasty. Not to mention recipes similar to old comfort foods to satisfy any old lingering cravings. 5 stars all the way!

5 out of 5 stars The title ain't lyin'.......2007-09-19

This is a fantastic beginner raw foods book. None of the recipes require anything more complicated than a blender and food processor. I taste-tested some of the recipes with a few omnivores with great results. The Walnut Paté and Flourless Chocolate Cake paid for the book alone.

Don't be discouraged by the worst book cover design I've ever seen. The recipes are great. They also need a better food stylist, lighting designer, photographer but only b/c they are not doing this book justice.

5 out of 5 stars awesome recipe book!.......2007-09-12

This book is great! The first recipe I made called the "Guacamole Sandwich" was the best thing I've ever tasted! I'll never think about eating cooked food again! All of the recipes are simple, fast and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-09-07

I am a not a hard-core raw foodist. I just think incorporating raw foods is a good way to work towards a healthy diet. I have a few raw food books but this one has the easiest recipes to prepare. It's perfect for a beginner and even as I progress to more complicated meals, I come back to these recipes again and again. I particularly love the "Not Meatballs w/ Zucchini Pasta," "Mediterranean Kale" and "Walnut Pate." There are good desserts too, such as brownies... yum.

Also recommended: Raw Food, Real World-- More labor intensive recipes but excellent; has beautiful photos. Further, if you are ever in NYC, you may want to check out Pure Food and Wine-- I was skeptical (What?! A raw food restaurant? Come on!) but the food was very tasty and the restaurant had a cozy atmosphere...

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for raw food newbies.......2007-08-30

I am new to the raw food world and found this book by Jennifer Cornbleet to be a fantastic introduction! The recipes were enticing, instructions were simple, and the previously daunting task (for me!) of making interesting food in the context of a raw diet was made not only effortless but delicious with the help of this book. The chocolate mousse and marinara sauce became immediate favorites of mine. The not-tuna pate in sushi is another meal I really look forward to. I have continued to be inspired to incorporate more and more raw meals into my diet from this book and recommend it to anyone else who is getting started in this healthy way of eating!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for young cooks.......2007-08-01

Mollie Katzen is a great cookbook author, and I love to give this as a gift to young cooks. Because Katzen writes vegetarian, it is a 'no worry' gift if the family has made that choice.
Recipies are easy to follow with delicious results. Reading, planning, following directions - all important steps for young readers.
A solid choice for your own kids, or as a holiday or birthday gift.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to teach reading!.......2007-07-24

These are some really simple recipes that I think most children will enjoy. They are broken down in to small steps with a blurb underneath. Not only will kids be making artistic culinary statements, they can also learn to associate words and pictures.

For families that place good food high on their list of priorities, educating their wee ones about the joys of sushi may be far more important than teaching about bunnies and balls and flowers. But even those who don't know futomaki from hatahata will relish the playful rhymes and lush collages in Amy Wilson Sanger's wonderful First Book of Sushi.
Miso in my sippy cup,
tofu in my bowl.
Crab and avocado
fill my California roll.
English-speaking tots will love wrapping their lips around Japanese words such as tekka maki, ebi, and wasabi, and will soon be joining in the bouncy recitation of sushi favorites for the very young. This bright little board book, with its gorgeous array of patterns and textured, mixed-media collages, looks good enough to eat. And who knows, it might even inspire picky eaters to try a little egg tamago or squishy salmon roe (otherwise known as ikura)! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

For the littlest fans of that favorite Japanese finger food comes a sturdy board book sure to inspire giggles (and even some growling stomachs!). Sanger's textural, mixed media and cut paper collages form an ideal accompaniment to her bouncy rhyming text to captivate/fascinate even the most finicky eaters. Whether a temaki know-it-all or clueless about ebi, First Book of Sushi is a welcome side dish for nori experts and novices of all ages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful little boar book.......2007-06-01

This is a really cute little book. Perfect for any sushi loving parent. For the food lovers, she's done books for lots of different cuisines.

5 out of 5 stars my baby LOVES these books.......2007-05-23

i was given a stack of these board books at my baby shower. First Book of Sushi, Yum Yum Dim Sum, Urban Babies Wear Black, as well as, the Petit Connoisseur: Art and The Petit Connoisseur: fashion, my kid LOVES them!! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such! And they are virtually indestructible! Great addition to any new baby room!

5 out of 5 stars cool and quirky board book.......2007-05-07

My one year old son loves this board book! We actually have the entire series. It's fun and creative, and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages. We are hooked!

3 out of 5 stars First Book of Sushi - Tiny Little Book.......2007-01-22

This is a very little kid's book, one of those small 5.5 inch x 5.5 inch, indestructable, 10 thick little pages. I was surprised when I received it. Almost too infant-like for my 5 yr old. It was a little fun though and I didn't return it. Just skimpy, a little disappointing. Honestly, can't remember if it was adequately decribed in the Amazon description. For $6.95, you decide.

4 out of 5 stars Turning raw fish into fun rhymes.......2006-11-05

This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"

I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).

Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.

5 out of 5 stars Fruits and Vegetables.......2006-08-09

The thing that I really like about this book was that all the sentences weren't the same. It did not just say "these are bananas, these are tomatoes" all the time, but integrated questions, and even characteristics of the fruits and vegetables. The pictures are bright and colorful, and made me want to go buy a piece of fruit right then. I would highly recommend this book as a useful and practical tool for learning the names of basic fruits and vegetables in both English and Spanish. It is very likely that you will find yourself practicing these words at home when you are eating a piece of watermelon, or chopping a pepper for dinner.

5 out of 5 stars it's a MUST have!.......2007-06-28

i used to love my easy bake oven so i couldn't wait to purchase one for my daughter. i was shocked to see the prices on the mixes and thought there had to be some sort of book out there with kid sized oven recipies. THIS ONE IS IT!!! great variety....cute little measuring spoons....stuff kids will actually eat. my daughter is a pickey eater but as long as she can pick a recipe and cook it herself, she'll eat. we even made some recipes up on our own. it even works with the newer ovens that look like the stand up ranges. LOVELY!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2007-03-03

What else can you say about a product that gets you and your child involved in an activity together? My son and I had a blast trying out all of the recipes in this cookbook. It also sparked his creativity to invent some of his own! Easy to follow recipes and very accurate cooking times. A must have for Easy Bake Oven owners!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for Children.......2007-01-28

This book has many very good recipes in it and is very good and easy for young children to use. I really appreciated getting the little measuring spoons with the book. I am going to buy another book for my other grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars mommy cookbook!.......2007-01-18

oh man this is a great gift!

as a stay at home dad i spend all day trying to keep my 4 yr old entertained. A friend of mine got her a easybake oven for Christmas. I looked at the food to make and man is it expensive!

someone suggested this book. i can see it saving me a bunch of money. also i am experimenting with recipes i have done myself.

but its great. also the little measuring spoons are really neat.

5 out of 5 stars should come w the oven.......2006-12-07

this is a great book! it shows you how to make mixes at the fraction of the cost with things you have in the kitchen. it gives kids a real chance to be creative. add a bit of this or that.
warning: read the front few pages. someone complained that their pan overflowed because they overfilled the pan. the book does warn you but how full to fill the pans but you have to read the important info page that most people ignore.
i also love the 3 measuring spoons that come w it. i am tempted to keep them for myself. (i said tempted, i didnt actually take them from my kids)

Book Description

Every year Henry and his dad (with help from Mudge, of course) make Henry's mother a funny lunch for Mother's Day. Shopping for their juicy, crunchy surprise is fun, and preparing it is even more fun. But sharing it with Henry's mother is the most fun of all!

4 out of 5 stars Mothers Day Lunch.......2007-02-09

The attractivness of this story is the special bond that has occurred with Henry and his family. He is so excited about Mothers Day "knowing" that he and dad will take a secret trip to get something special for mom. Arriving home they creatively make something together, that they think mom will just love! Mudge and his appetite just enhance the humor that makes this an all around fun story.

4 out of 5 stars another Henry and Mudge.......2005-09-30

Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat". My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day. If you love the series, get it. If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch.......2004-06-12

With this Level 2 focus on independent reading skills, kids will more readily move from beginning reader to enjoying more complex tales with paragraphs and short chapters. What better place to start than with Henry and Mudge & The Funny Lunch, Cynthia Rylant's zany story of kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch ever ? against all odds?color drawings add to the appeal.

Book Description

Over the past decade, Toronto-based chef Susur Lee has built an international reputation with his groundbreaking cuisine, winning raves such as "culinary genius" from critics and chefs alike. Borrowing heavily from French and Chinese traditions, Susur defies the ubiquitous "fusion" label with his wholly original and decidedly bold style of cooking, dubbed nouvelle Chinois. SUSUR: A CULINARY LIFE offers readers an intimate look at the evolution of this master chef. Toronto food writer Jacob Richler takes us on an enthralling culinary odyssey that begins with Susur's apprenticeship at Hong Kong's legendary Peninsula Hotel and follows the chef 's major Successes at his award-winning restaurants Lotus and Susur. This in-depth study also chronicles Susur's ambitious plan to modernize the ancient repertoire of classical Chinese cooking —a 5,000-year journey that ends in the creation of his vibrant new cuisine. A remarkable subject deserves a remarkable book, and SUSUR is as innovative as the chef it celebrates. Two colorful, gorgeously illustrated volumes — one describing Susur 's development as a chef, the other featuring his most sought-after recipes —are bound together in an intricate and innovative presentation that resembles a Chinese puzzle box. A sensuous treat for foodies and chefs alike, SUSUR is the definitive word on this cutting-edge chef.

4 out of 5 stars great for professionals.......2007-01-19

i bought it for my boyfriend, who is an aspiring chef and loves asian cuisine. he loves it - its a beautiful and inspiring book. i wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is just interested in cooking at home.

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is.......2006-04-09

Pretty coffee table book...don't buy for the recipes unless you are a professional. I am a chef and have been at several for and five star establishments. I had the pleasure a few years ago to do a banquet with Susur and he is the real deal. Will his techniques translate to the amateur cook looking to learn from his book? No. These are professional recipes designed to be executed by a top class brigade with years of technique and time to prepare the needed mis en place. But as a professional, the way he approaches food as well as the culinary foundation that he has built for himself is unique and will be appreciated by those in the know. What isn't pretentious about a $50 coffee table book? This book gives exposure to a unique and talented chef who is grounded in solid technique and is able to translate that into well presented and balanced dishes that are not silly fusion. Definetly worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars Susur Lee.......2006-03-20

This book its all about creativity by a man who has been over looked for too many years as one of the worlds Top Chefs. This book is in one simple word "Awesome"

5 out of 5 stars Susur: Some Thoughts on Perfection in Cuisine.......2006-02-21

Given the acidity of previous reviews, let me start with some background on myself: I am an American not resident in Canada; I am a non-professional chef -- I cook for myself, my family and my friends. I love food, both from the philosophy that one can learn the history of a country or region by learning about its cuisine and from the perspective that I truly believe we are what we eat ... and the miserable record of American health and longevity is directly due to the poor quality of what we consume.

I first saw Susur on Food Network's "Chef du Jour", where well-regarded chefs would do a single 30 minute program on a topic of their choice. That was at least 8 years ago. I think he may have been on one or two "Ready, Set, Cook" programs, but I'm not certain. He certainly didn't push to become a "celebrity chef", at least in the TV sense. He did become a celebrity in the culinary world: becoming one of Food & Wine's "10 Best Chefs in the World" is not a self-serving proclamation -- it is an evaluation by those who can and do taste the food of all the best and near-best.

I've had the good fortune to have an expense account and a business that required me to take clients to dinner, so I've had the privilege of eating at many of the finest restaurants in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. My personal opinion is that Susur belongs among the finest and if in Toronto, it would be my first choice of a dining location -- yes, even if I were paying the bill myself -- some meals are worth every penny of the cost.

I've eaten at his restaurant in Toronto many times, on business trips. The food has always been spectacular, along with the service, along with the description of the philosophy behind each dish. A meal at Susur's not only satisfies the body; it's an education in itself. Again, this is not simply my opinion -- read the reviews in Toronto's newspapers, or read the reviews and look at the scores in zagat.com. Susur isn't the only "great chef" in Toronto, but he is clearly in that category.

Finally, to the book itself: Yes, the binding is unusual), as is the organization (would I count it as 2 books -- no -- do I think that volume 1 as a biography and volume 2 as recipes are two very different works -- absolutely yes). Most chefs don't provide a personal biography and discuss the evolution of their philosophy of cuisine. If you want lots of recipes you can make with ingredients found anywhere, there are thousands of such cookbooks to choose from (start with Rachel Ray's "30 Minute Meals" and go from there). On the other hand, if you want to learn about how to layer flavors, and see how a master puts together a pantry, this is the book to read. The same advice (for flavor, you need sauces, pastes, and other preps) is given by most chefs in cooking courses and is found in lots of other cookbooks -- just to mention a few in Chinese, try Barbara Tropp's "China Moon Cookbook", Nina Simonda "Spoonful of Ginger", Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's "From the Earth" or Emily Grace's "Breath of a Wok". Susur's are more complex, and more subtle, but taste the food and you'll see how it transcends anyone else's.

Is this a book I will cook from daily? No, and Susur is the first to admit that his cuisine needs a tremendous amount of manpower to achieve. Will this book teach me to be a better chef? Absolutely. Will it have a place of honor in my kitchen? Assuredly. Study it, think about it, and learn from it ... and if you have the opportunity, go to Toronto ... and taste it.

3 out of 5 stars Delusions of Grandeur- You're Su-Su Vain!.......2006-02-17

Delusions of Grandeur-Self Proclaimed "Toronto's Local Hero"

I am an intermediate level amateur cook, and pretty aware of cutting edge chefs, cooks and well written cookbooks, and Susur Lee and his book's grandiose recipes may wow small town folks and some home cooks, however he is delightfully delusional in his self importance, proclaiming himself THE "Local Hero" of Toronto, when my long time Toronto friends have not even heard of him!

I highly suggest you first read his very complex, hours long recipes, before spending good money for just 50 or so difficult and few recipes.

Chicago's Chef Charlie Trotter has similar recipes in terms of ingredients unobtainable to less than high end restaurant chefs, and may also have 20-40+ ingredients per dish, requiring an army of assistants to pull it off, however he does not have an entire book devoted to a sycophant praising his own wonderfulness. His combinations also "taste well" together in reading the ingredients, and he has books with "doable" ingredients and they are quite cookable by home cooks.

Susur credits his departed wife Marilou with his success, but others who gave him a "leg up" don't rate even a photo in this paen to his brilliance, as Susur takes back stabbing jabs at better known chefs who helped his career.

Instead of, having say instructive photographs at different stages of a complex dish's creation, he has instead chosen such childish photo selections as photos of his wonderful doodles of his own name, his hand written recipes, and doodling of a seating chart...

Does "You're Su-su vain" come to mind?

Hold that song in mind, as you smile and flick through the first 113 pages of his ego inflating toady's drivel, without even seeing one real recipe.

Oh, the recipes are in the "second" bound book, tighly bound, like a dead Siamese twin to this "first" book. So yes, he has thus published "two" books...um, sure, Susu, we're counting with you. Clever ploy; publish "Susur's Cooking Triptych" next time, and get credit for 5 books, total! (Toronto is certainly still cleaning up from the ticker tape parades for this self proclaimed "Local Hero's" creations!)

Why pay $50 (now down to $30) for only fifty some pretentious recipes, each with 25-45+ ingredients that you are more likely to laugh at, than cook... even one bloated recipe? Borrow this from Susu's large stack of "returns", or from a library, first, before buying!

Forget about "The Emperor's New Clothes"...this is the "Emperor's Trendy Cook Book!"

I do like the professionally styled photos of his creations. You or I could cook them if we had 2 assistant cooks, the strange collection of fresh ingredients, and gratuitous foie gras and black truffles added to many recipes.

Susu's has a dreadful hodgepodge of instructions and techniques, having the reader hopping between both "books" to cobble together a dish, and there's no Table of Contents to organize this chaotic collection.

He knows cooking techniques. I'd happily dine at his restaurant. Teaching techniques by a book is another story. For beginning and intermediate cooks, the cooking techniques that he glides over are far, far better explained in many cookbooks that the professional chefs already consult.

Some well thumbed cookbook/testbooks include "On Cooking Techniques from Expert Chefs"-Labensky, "Essentials of Cooking"-James Peterson, Jacques Pepin's "Complete Techniques", "La Varenne Pratique"- Anne Willan"The Zuni Cafe"-Rodgers, "The New Making of a Cook"-Kamman, "Glorious French Cooking"-Peterson, "Modern Art of Chinese Cooking"-Trop, "The Key to Chinese Cooking"-Kuo, etc.

Big Propblem is...home cooks, without two helpers, will be very frustrated by the hard to find ingredients and the time consuming, convoluted recipes in this cookbook.

Try making Susur's "Pan-roasted scallops, with sunchoke puree, pancetta, periwinkles in truffle sauce and preserved lemon".

Hmmm, if someone mixing up 1000 snippets of culinary nouns in a hat, then let a trained gerbil randomly pick out, then line up the first 10 to 15 words that came out... the resulting recipe titles may even be more appealing to you and I than Susur's convoluted "con-Fusion" titles that easily awe rookie foodwriters and rookie cooks...

Make his "Elk striploin with yamaimo, arame, uni, with burnt butter soy sauce", (40+ ingredients) or try "Braised veal cheek, with parsnip puree, cocoa nibs, grapes stuffed with dry-cured olives, and parmesan (also with over 40 ingredients).

Maybe the "Tuna with wasabi and parsnip mousse on cucumber jelly with crispy squid ink noodle" would whet your whistle. I'd rather go to the grocery store and make "Spiced seaweed crusted red mullet with saffron mayonnaiase and zuchini flower fritters".

A memorable dish is "Roast squab and foie gras stuffed squab legs in port sauce, with lotus root and baby corn, blueberry preserve, and taro root fritters" (>30 ingredients).

Step aside, Charlie Trotter, you've been "out Trottered" by Susu and his caramelized nuts...

For the amusement value, the professionally styled photos of plates that would leave most folks hungry from the tiny portions, and the sad need for the dramatic Napoleonic pose and prose by the self proclaimed "Local Hero of Toronto"... I still give him 3 stars...it takes guts (braised with cocoa, blueberry and truffle oil), to be so sweet and childlike in his vanity!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you like to spend a lot of time cooking, this book IS NOT for you.......2007-03-24

I ordered several low carb cookbooks when I decided to start preparing more food at home, and this is the only one I use. I don't have a lot of time to spend preparing or even shopping for my food, and the 3-ingredient recipes really keep things simple. No more going to the store to buy all those exotic ingredients you will never use again.

There is also a handy shopping list of ingredients to have in your cupboard each week - I didn't even have garlic in mine - that make shopping without a meal plan do-able.

The other thing I like about this cookbook, is that everything I make tastes great. And for me, that's saying something. My sister was astonished that I am cooking at all, and when I prepared the fantastic asparagus with fried capers at her house - from memory, with ingredients she had on hand - she immediately bought her own copy.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to control the carbs in their diet by cooking tasty food at home, but who doesn't have the time, skill or inclination to learn more complex cooking methods.

5 out of 5 stars simple!.......2007-01-09

after exhausting every recipe in the south beach diet cookbooks, i needed some new ideas. this book is great. so many great ideas that often times, you already have the ingredients in your fridge. the recipes are all coded, Very Low Carb, Indulgent Low Carb or Low Carb. This helps to balance out a weekly meal plan and keep you on target. i'm so glad i bought this book.

1 out of 5 stars Disapointed.......2006-01-12

I have been a low carber for years and have lots of low carb cookbooks and I have to say that this book was disapointing. The recipes are things I've already seen or won't make. Some of the carb counts were pretty high too. If you have other low Carb cookbooks you probobly don't need this one.

4 out of 5 stars Creative Ideas.......2005-11-25

I love the tastes and textures used in the recipes. The only drawback is how complicated (as in time consuming) some of the recipes are. With three ingredients each, I expected recipes I could quickly whip up. Some are, but some aren't.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best cookbooks out there - low carb or otherwise.......2005-04-15

I have always been skeptical of Rozanne Gold's 1-2-3 approach, thinking three ingredients couldn't possibly yield the kind of results I expect. Boy, was I wrong. The recipes in this book are terrific and jam-packed full of flavor. Among those I have tried are: the Pecan-Crusted Chicken Breasts (intensely flavored and incredibly good - hot or cold), the Miso-Glazed Chicken Breasts (yummy), the Salmon Steaks with Cornichon Vinaigrette (lovely), the Green Beans with Pesto and Walnuts (great), "Creamed" Spinach (my husband repeatedly asks for it), the Sauteed Grape Tomeatoes with Shallots (delish), and Smokey Joe Burgers (nice twist for burgers). I use this book at least once a week.

Simplicity as an art form creates the intrigue and attraction of Healthy 1-2-3, a nutritional cookbook that utilizes only three ingredients per recipe. Award-winning chef and author Rozanne Gold continues her 1-2-3 series with this "Healthy" entry, made with the calorie-conscious cook or host in mind.

Though three ingredients quickly can be construed as a restriction, Gold cleverly maneuvers around her own concept, all the while abetting her healthy cause. If, for example, she has a recipe featuring a particular vegetable, she uses that vegetable's own broth to create the sauce for the dish. The Roasted Asparagus and Orange Salad with Asparagus "Fettuccine" uses a fresh orange vinaigrette (tossed with roasted asparagus) and a fettuccine that is not pasta, but rather actually shaved asparagus stocks.

Gold also gives nutrition lessons throughout--teaching that all foods groups have an important place in a balanced, nutritional diet. Even foods that are high in fat and calories, such as Brie cheese, contain important nutrients that the body needs, even though they've been stricken from many diet plans.

The recipe selection addresses the full range of potential users, from the average hungry guest to the most assiduous, observant vegan. For example, the beverage combination of watermelon, pineapple juice, and fresh mint for a Watermelon Splash is simple in both preparation and the expectation of the pallet, while Immune Tea, made of kombu, shiitake mushrooms, and fresh cilantro, will probably be a stretch for the average American tastes. The quality of food photography and bold colors of this book add an extra flair to the healthy recipes. --Teresa Simanton

Book Description

On a mission to provide health-conscious home cooks with a remarkable assortment of appealing, wholesome dishes, Gold maximizes the flavor in her recipes by removing extraneous ingredients and reducing calories and fat. Everything from red meat to red wine has its place. The vivid, unadulterated taste of the best ingredients reawakens the senses and reminds us just how satisfying real food can be. 5 out of 5 stars This is my Bible for weight loss!.......2006-07-02

I've cooked almost everything in this book and it has all been over-the-top good. I especially love the walnut cake and the chicken with avacado and mango mousse. The swordfish with corn and chilie cream is also outstanding and a favorite when I entertain. I have all but one of her books and I'm going to buy that one now!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Inspiring, if not always pracitical.......2004-10-23

I bought this as one of the first cookbooks I ever purchased while in collge. Ambitious is one word for that!
This cookbook is beautiful and inspiring. The photos are wonderful, it has suggested meals (with their nutritional analysis). I really love how original and unusual many of these recipes are. This is not the kind of cookbook that insists you substitue applesauce for butter and other such nonsense- rather, these are recipes that are inherently healthy but delicious in everyway nonetheless.
I made a huge 11 lb ribeye roast recipe from the cookbook (cured in salt, fresh dill) and served it with the wasabi butter asaparagus for a big family Passover meal. It was a HUGE hit, and the family wants wasabi butter on everything now.
I've also made the pink grapefruit with guava syryp and candied violets (which were a trick to find), many of the little salads, and even the 'laughing milk', a strange drink made of whipped egg whites and sugar. The fish recipes are simple and among my favorites.
My only complaint about this book is that some of the recipes are the author trying so hard to force a dish out of three ingredients that the recipe becomes cumbersome and over-complicated. I like the recipes that benefit from the simplicity of using only a few ingredients, rather than seeing how many different ways you can use broccoli in one dish.
Also, unless you live in New York City and know where to find the fish market or the produce market where chefs shop, there are some ingredients that you will simply never find.
Overall, I do adore this cookbook and I drag it out time and time again when I want to make something fun and a bit exotic.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Food, but not Easy or Cheap.......2004-01-29

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. However, because there are so few ingredients, you need really good quality ones to pull these recipes off, which makes them relatively expensive. There are some cheap meals (Pasta in the style of Sardinia, one of my favorites, about $10.00 for a 3 person meal) but expect to spend between $30-$50 dollars for every entrée serving 3-4, with appetizers a little less. Nor does the number of ingredients guarantee speed or simplicity - most of theses recipes take 45 min - 3 hours. However, if you have the time and money, I have made some fantastic dishes with this book. They're so good they don't even taste healthy.

2 out of 5 stars Good if you can obtain the exotic ingredients.......2002-06-08

This book would be good if I had a bigger food budget as many of the recipes call for more exotic foods and spices than I generally keep in my kitchen, or can afford to buy. Lots of good pictures to drool over though.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Cookbook.......2001-10-31

Overall, this is the best cookbook I've ever used. Every recipe I've made is absolutely delicious, and for non-veggie eaters like myself, it is a God send. This is because the book encourages one to try different types of vegetables cooked in different ways and with different sauces & accompaniaments. Don't be fooled though--while some of the recipes are quick and simple to make, some take quite a lot of time--all the better to savor the finished meal, however. This book has truly taught me to enjoy the entire process of cooking, from shopping for the best ingredients, preparing the meal, then enjoying it with a nice glass of wine.
