A Respiratory Must Have.......2007-07-28
This book is well organized and easy to use during clinical rotations. A handy reference for all material - even important things you don't use everyday as a respiratory therapist or respiratory student.
An excellent reference.......2007-01-22
Wee arrranged and clear to understand - this book has finally answered all my questions, in a language which I can understand, and at last I now understand my specialist. I would recommend this book to anyone with any form of respiratory illness or wishes to understand the deeper workings of the lungs
Respiratory Bible.......2006-03-17
I absolutely LOVE this book. This thing is pocket size, and yet still FULL of information. I recommend this book to any student, or respiratory therapist! It will be a great help!
Great book.......2006-01-23
It is fast and easy to recheck data and small enough to cary.
Absolutely the best RT Pocket Reference!.......2006-01-21
This is the most organized collection of data I have seen in a quick reference. Every possible bit of information I need working in critical care is in this book, and most important, I can look up that hemodynamic value, or lab value, or PFT result really fast. These tabs make finding everything a snap. I've worked in respiratory therapy for 15 years, but I still need to have a pocket guide to occasionally look up some quick facts. I highly recommend this book to all RT's.
Book Description
Analyzing computer system performance is often regarded by most system administrators, IT professionals and software engineers as a black art that is too time consuming to learn and apply. Finally, this book by acclaimed performance analyst Dr. Neil Gunther makes this subject understandable and applicable through programmatic examples. The means to this end is the open-source performance analyzer Pretty Damn Quick (PDQ) written in Perl and available for download from the author’s Website: www.perfdynamics.com.
As the epigraph in this book points out, Common sense is the pitfall of performance analysis. The performance analysis framework that replaces common sense is revealed in the first few chapters of Part I. The important queueing concepts embedded in PDQ are explained in a very simple style that does not require any knowledge of formal probability theory. Part II begins with a full specification of how to set up and use PDQ replete with examples written in Perl. Subsequent chapters present applications of PDQ to the performance analysis of multicomputer architectures, benchmark results, client/server scalability, and Web-based applications. The examples are not mere academic toys but are based on the author's experience analyzing the performance of large-scale systems over the past 20 years. By following his lead, you will quickly be able to set up your own Perl scripts for collecting data and exploring performance-by-design alternatives without inflating your manager’s schedule.
Customer Reviews:
Both theory and practice plus free modeling software.......2006-09-18
The coverage of the theory in the first part of the book is very well done. However, its the practical examples in the second half where the book really shines. There are a number of examples modeling client server and web applications.
A copy of his modeling tool, PDQ, is available by download from his website. This version is in Perl. Even though I am not a very experienced Perl programmer I think this is an interesting way to get more practice by building PDQ models. The PDQ package is explained very well and a number of example models are covered.
Some of the examples are from various scattered publications. It's great to get these example models collected in one volume. Dr. Gunthers characteristic sense of humor comes through in the examples.
There is some very practical information about model validation and what to do to account for hidden latencies. There are clear examples of how to practice the art of applying queuing models to real problems.
I would have liked to see some more examples of load dependent servers. Overall I rate the book five stars and I really appreciate getting the modeling software for free!
A great tool for the capacity planner or performance analyst.......2005-05-26
This book lays out basics of queuing theory in a way that is both understandable and easy to apply. I have fumbled for years using complex performance analysis tools without ever really knowing whether or not I'm getting the right answer. Now I know what looks right and what doesn't. Gunther has an easy to follow style as he introduces the concepts of queuing theory. Then he shows you how to apply what you have learned using real life examples. It's a definite "must have" for the capacity planner or system performance analyst.
concise and lucid exposition on performance analysis.......2005-05-12
dr. gunther has written a gem of a performance analysis book. for starter, the unix load average is a wonderful detective story. i especially liked chapter 5 with real performance analysis experiences applying queueing theory discussed in both chapter 2 and 3. the best part is dr. gunther's exposition of queueing theory into the essence for the working performance analysts. in addition, appendix B on buffers and appendix C on memoryless property are the most lucid explanation i have read. i would also heartily recommend dr. gunther's other book, the practical performance analyst.

Customer Reviews:
Not a bad book..........2007-01-04
I must begin by stating that I didn't receive the book until the week of my exam. :( So, obviously I was not reliant on it. The book is small enough to be "not so" intimidating. It has relevant formulas and explanations to give one the gist of stats needed to pass a biostats class.
My opinion of the book may have been better had the product arrived sooner.
Pdq Statistics (PDQ Series).......2006-08-04
In these times, you can't walk in the streets without hear or read some statistics, in the paper, in the market or everywhere.
This is the book not only for a biomedical student, is a book for anyone interested in know what is statistics about. The politicians and doctor can lie with statistics, but with the knowledge from this book, you can see beyond. The use of examples is extensive, and some of them are hilarious. It's a book very concise, informative and, the best of all, funny.
In a class of its own!.......2004-01-07
This book is the only statistics book of its type. For each section covering a specific statistical method (from simple methods to those you may not even cover in your PhD training), a concise 2-5 page summary is presented. The goal is not to enable the reader to calculate any of these statistics, but to understand conceptually what each statistic means. This is where it can fill in information other statistics texts never get to. A student (or researcher!) who can churn out factorial ANOVA results, but doesn't truly understand what they mean can turn to this book for clarity. It's simple (for statistics), it's short, it's clear, and you have to love a book that is dedicated "To the many people who have made this book both possible and necessary -- authors of other statistics books"!
The best.......2002-12-08
I've spent years looking for a book on statistics that is lucid for professionals who need to use statistical methods but who don't want to get a Ph.D. in math to be able to undertand them.
This book is the best. No incomprehensible Greek formulas. No tortured prose. And yet it's not just a mere introduction of what a mode is. It includes some advanced statistical methods and gives you all you need to know to understand what they do and how and when you would use them. It is long enough to describe each method sufficiently, including pitfalls and things to watch out for. Yet the book is short enough that reading it and undertanding the whole thing is possible in a modest length of time.
You can stop searching now. This is the book.
Don't fear the p-value!.......2000-04-11
This really is a fun book - yes FUN - I'd even say it's a bathroom book about statistics. It's very conceptual, not at all driven by formulas - and makes many statistical concepts crystal clear. A great book to pick up for the PHD or the stats phobic - -

Customer Reviews:
one of my favorites.......2007-08-21
This is a great book. Very easy to follow and has good recipes. My favorite is the rice and bean empanadas! Yum!
I don't write reviews, but this book deserves one.......2007-07-22
This book is absolutely wonderful!!! Both my husband and I work full time, are in school, and have an 18 month old daughter to care for, so needless to say, things are a little hectic. Add to that that I am a vegetarian and he is a meat eater, and cooking dinner has pretty much been impossible.
However, with this book it is actually feasable for us to have homecooked meals. The recipies have a variety of inspirations, ranging from Italy to Mexico and Thailand to Japan. I love cooking, and we all love good food, so it is wonderful to be able to cook healthy, good tasting meals again. Also, the meals are so good, that my husband says that he does not mind being meatless at most of his meals! One of the things that we appreciate the most is that there are not any really hard to find ingrediants and the recipies do not rely on tofu or setien or other meat substitutes. They are just GOOD recipies without any meat.
For people who would like to have good home-cooked meals, but do not have time to spend all day (or even a couple of hours) in the kitchen, I wholly reccomend the book. I am finally cooking and enjoying dinner again!
Perfect for frazzled moms, college students, and those on the run seeking healthy veggie dishes.......2007-06-15
The PDQ (Pretty Darn Quick) Vegetarian by Donna Klein offers over 240 no- or low-prep healthy veggie recipes perfect for busy moms (or dads!) or frazzled college students on those too-tired-to-cook weeknights.
Divided into a fairly standard arrangement of starters, soups, salads, sandwiches, noodles, vegetable, grain and legume combos, sides, brunch and egg dishes, and desserts, most of the recipes feature no prep since you use prepackaged convenience food from the supermarket such as presliced and chopped veggies, bagged salad greens, canned beans, and prepared hummus.
The recipes are also clearly labeled as lacto-ovo, dairy-free, egg-free, and vegan (many recipes contain a vegan option). Roughly half the recipes are vegan or can be prepared as such with minimal alteration. The recipes are easy to follow, and many feature variations. Detailed nutritional info is included for each recipe.
One of the things I especially liked was the inclusion of delicious international recipes from Asian (Toasted Potstickers with Wasabi Cream, Miso Soup with Pot Stickers, Asian Noodle and Broccoli Slaw Wrap, Japanese Vermicelli in Peanut Sauce, Coconut Sticky Rice Pudding), Mexican (Easy Appetizer Burritos, Mexican Bean and Tortilla Soup, Bean Enchiladas with Green Sauce, Spanish Tortilla, Mexican Rice Pudding), Italian (Fresh Mozzarella, Cherry Tomato, and Basil Spears, Hearty Minestrone Soup, Pesto Pizza with Fresh Mozzarella and Cherry Tomatoes, Penne with Red Pepper Cream and Pine Nuts, Baked Pears with Caramel and Amaretti), and Middle Eastern (Artichoke Bottoms with Hummus, Chickpeas with Curried Mayonnaise, Moroccan Vegetable Stew over Couscous).
Each recipe is introduced by a brief, helpful paragraph including the author's advice on preparation, presentation, and possible substitutions.
The recipes are quick and easy as promised, many with minimal prep and/or clean up, so this is a lifesaver for hectic weeknights, and vastly superior to bland, unhealthy frozen dinners or trans-fat-laden takeout. This is the perfect gift for your college-bound son or daughter!
Amazing.......2007-03-08
This book is terrific. It is easy to use with clear instructions. The food produced is excellent - little prep is necessary, and the recipes almost always call for the amount of each ingredient that is actually sold in most stores. So, if the recipe calls for 6 oz of something, it is probably available in a 6 oz size. There is no waste that way. Also easy to double the recipes and the food is great as leftovers, as well. This cookbook has made a huge change - for the better - in my daughter's life. She has little time and even less kitchen space. Every recipe that she has tried has been easy and wonderful.
Excellent Cookbook.......2007-02-04
This book strikes a perfect balance. It is quick and easy, but at the same time it is creative and delicious. I enjoy the creative aspects of cooking, but I have limited time to cook many evenings, so this book is ideal. So many cookbooks go to one extreme or the other - either they have easy but boring and obvious recipes, or they have great tasting recipes that take all day and have 50 exotic ingredients. This book avoids both extremes, making it a great resource for everyday cooking for a family.
Additionally, it is full of vegan recipes and vegan options - although I am not strictly vegan, I prefer vegan recipes for health reasons.
Because of my happy experience with this book, I have added another of the author's books, "Vegan Italiano" to my wish list.
If you want to expand your repertoire of quick and easy recipes, and at the same time have more variety and flavour on the table, this book is a great choice!
