Look before you buy.......2007-08-13
Since this is a cookbook, I should have looked through a copy before I purchased. Many of the recipes do not feature a full day of cooking in the crockpot. Therefore, they can't be used on a workday.
A Few great Recipes.......2007-08-08
I made a few recipes from this cook book that turned out great, and another few that weren't great at all. There was a lot of variety and different/new ideas, but it was not ideal for someone that is using the slow cooker to save time. A lot of the recipes involved a lot of ingredients, a lot of pre-cooking things before they went in the cooker, and also additional steps involved during the cooking (ex: after 2 hours turn the slow cooker on low,etc.)... and all of these things make it difficult for the cook who is away all day at work to even attempt. Also, many of the recipes called for short cooking times, like 3-4 hours, and that isn't ideal for a person who is working outside of the home for 9 hours prior to dinner.
Great Recipes - Great Cookbook!.......2007-08-05
I love this book! I recently purchased several cookbooks on slow cooking for use in a class I was teaching and this was my favorite on the subject for several reasons.
I like cookbooks that are organized so that I can find what I'm looking for fast. This book has good organized chapters and a terrific index which makes it possible for me to find whatever I'm looking for in just a few seconds.
I like the variety of recipes contained in this book, over 350 of them, for both the traditional dishes we have always cooked in our slow cookers like soups, stews, chilies, and pot roasts, and also for dishes that I hadn't thought of cooking in a slow cooker like desserts, jams, sauces, and casseroles. Actually, the thing that caught my eye and was one of the main reasons for buying this book was a chapter with instructions on cooking polenta, risotto, grits, rice, and other grains. Once I had prepared polenta in my slow cooker according to the directions in this book, I was hooked! I will never again have to stand over a hot stove stirring polenta for 40 minutes or more; nor will I ever have to stir my risotto or grits either!
I have many cookbooks in my library that are disappointing just because they read like a laundry list of recipes; there are no comments such as what to serve the dish with, or helpful hints, or little blurbs on how the recipe came about. The comments preceding a recipe help me as the reader get a glimpse of the author's reasons for putting the particular recipe in the book, or a description on the recipe such as "this is a hearty thick soup, perfect for a cool evening," or what to serve the dish with. Those comments make the book readable for those of us who enjoy reading cookbooks like novels, and help those who hate to cook decide if a recipe is suitable for their particular purpose. This book has comments preceding every recipe which are very helpful.
I think this book is an excellent choice for cooks of all skill levels. It contains all of the preliminary information a cook needs to begin slow cooking, even for someone who hasn't done it before. It discusses what slow cooking actually is, cooking times, temperatures, cooking at high altitudes, safety, adapting regular recipes to a slow cooker, and numerous other helpful subjects. This book also has conversion charts and it even has a page that lists the manufacturers of slow cookers and their web sites.
The one drawback that I can see for this book is that there are no pictures. Many of us are visual cooks and would like to see what a dish is supposed to look like. That isn't possible with this book, and is the only thing that would prevent me from purchasing several copies for wedding and shower gifts; I feel like gift books are better if they have pictures. I do plan however, to purchase three more copies to give to my daughters; the recipes in this book are so easy and good it may help them avoid stopping for fast food so often and improve the nutrition and health of my grandchildren
Is ketchup a recipe ingredient to you?.......2007-07-19
Your answer to the question will determine whether you like this book. I almost purchased this book, and then found it at the library to look at first. I found 4 recipes that I would consider making. One recipe (but not one of the 4) listed ketchup as a recipe ingredient, and others listed similar prepared processed sauces likely to have lots of sugar. Its probably fine for someone using the crock pot to save time and bother - but I like to know the ingredients, and ketchup doesn't cut it for me.
Start cookin'!.......2007-07-12
This is a great book, but I didn't look close enough. For the price (under $8.00) I was expecting a small book with a few recipes and didn't really review the listing. This is a thick book with a number of categories, including many you wouldn't expect in a slow cooker cookbook. Good book...Great value...Easy recipes!

The search goes on..........2007-09-25
There were a few things that I did like about this cookbook - the photographs, the binding (hardcover with spiral binding inside), etc... Unfortunately what I didn't like was the most important part - the food.
I'll be up front, I've never liked the flavor and textures of vegetables made in a crock pot - everything just seems to get mushy. I only tried a handful of recipes and was disappointed with all of them. Even when the texture wasn't so much of an issue, the flavors were all wrong. I'm sure that there are some good recipes in here as I can see that quite a few people are happy with this cookbook - but this book is not for me.
This is the only cookbook (and I have well over 100 in my collection) that I've actually given away. The search for good crock pot recipes continues.
betty crockers slow cookers cook book.......2007-06-27
Receipes are out dated and there is not enough variety in the selection of dishes that are in this cook book. Would most likely cook 2 or 3 of the dishes in this book. Expected a lot more from some one like Betty crocker
Betty Crocker's Slow Cookbook.......2007-06-27
This was a replacement for one that got lost in a house move. I'd been missing it as now other slow cookbook comes close. Lovely clear recipes and easy to adapt to British measurements.
WONDERFUL.......2007-06-21
This is one of my most used slow cooker cookbooks. I like everything about it. It is great that it is spiral bound. I have used many of the recipes and every one of them has turned out delicious. The cooking times listed are just about right. Some of the recipes may have too much salt, so I use my judgment and just decrease it a bit. After all, it is easy to add salt at the table if necessary. However, sometimes the recipe will say to use either wine OR beef broth or something similar. That, of course, changes the amount of salt necessary, so I need to adjust accordingly. I love how the proper size of each slow cooker is mentioned for each recipe. So many cookbooks don't mention that, and you just have to figure it out based on the number of servings.
I love this cookbook and I think it is one of the best slow cooker cookbooks available.
Betty Crocker's Slow Cooker Cookbook.......2007-02-13
Most of the recipes have numberous ingredients that increase the time of food preperation and negates the purpose of using a slow cooker to have simple meals.

Book Description
A revolutionary approach to enhancing metabolism that enables lasting weight loss and facilitates spiritual well-being
• Presents an eight-week weight-loss program
• Explains how relaxed eating stimulates metabolic function and how stress hormones encourage weight gain
• Shows how fully enjoying each meal is the optimal way to a healthy body
Our modern culture revolves around fitting as much as possible into the least amount of time. As a result, most people propel themselves through life at a dizzying pace that is contrary to a healthy lifestyle. We eat fast, on the run, and often under stress, not only removing most of the pleasure we might derive from our food and creating digestive upset, but also wreaking havoc on our metabolism. Many of us come to the end of a day feeling undernourished, uninspired, and overweight.
In
The Slow Down Diet Marc David presents a new way to understand our relationship to food, focusing on quality and the possibilities of pleasure in eating to transform and improve metabolism. Citing cutting-edge research on body biochemistry as well as success stories from his own nutritional counseling practice, he shows that we are creatures of body, mind, and spirit and that when we attend to these levels simultaneously we can shed excess pounds, increase energy, and enhance digestion to feel rejuvenated and inspired. Marc David presents an eight-week program that allows readers to explore their unique connection to food, assisting them in letting go of their fears, guilt, and old habits so they can learn to treat their bodies in a dignified and caring way. He reveals the shortcomings of all quick-fix digestive aids and fad diets and debunks common nutrition myths, such as "the right way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more." He shows instead how to decrease cortisol and other stress-hormones and boost metabolic power through proper breathing and nutritional strategies that nourish both the body and soul, proving that fully enjoying each meal is the optimal way to a healthy body. Drawing on more than twenty years of experience in nutritional medicine, the psychology of eating, and the science of yoga, Marc David offers readers practical tools that will yield life-transforming, sustainable results.

Awareness is key.......2007-08-23
As a health counselor, I needed a book that would jump start my clients into the wonderful world of awareness. The Slow Down Diet is my dream come true. It awakens as it soothes, it motivates as it guides. The Slow Down Diet explains how to live life to its fullest, and not just through food. It doesn't judge or ridicule those who have lost their way. Instead, it gently picks up the lost and hopeless and inspires them to make the changes necessary for lasting health, vitality and peace.
I LOVE this book!.......2007-07-06
Though alot of these ideas may not be new, they are very well constructed and sometimes it felt like I was hearing these simple profound revelations for the first time. I also appreciated the extensive research and felt I could totally trust his wise insights. I know if I am able to implement all of his suggestions, I WILL change my life for the better!
Best book I ever picked up!!!.......2007-06-08
If you're tired of dieting and dieting and dieting and getting only temporary results, read this book!!! Also, if you have any kind of digestive upset, IBS, etc, read this book! I have had digestive problems for years and every diet or medication I tried did absolutely nothing. After reading the first 3 chapters in this book and implementing the simple suggestions it offered, I am happy to report that my digestive problems are gone, completely! I can hardly believe it could be this simple. Needless to say, I will be finishing this book. Do yourself a big favor and buy it!!
The Anti Diet that Really Works!.......2007-05-07
This book is wonderful! It talks about food in a whole different light than the average diet book, and makes you see food not as the enemy, but as a real ally. Since putting the tips in this book into practice, I have never felt better physically and mentally or had a healthier body image. It really teaches you to enjoy food and not feel guilty about it. Once you learn to enjoy and respect food, it's easy to not obsess about it anymore and everything else slowly falls into place! I no longer count calories and eat a ton more than I ever have and I've not only stayed the same size, but have even slimmed down! Yay!
Add a little pleasure to your life..........2006-12-05
It sounds contrary to everything we are taught about losing weight, but the author advocates you eat exactly what appeals to you (not some imitation, reduced calorie, fat free substitute), truly savor the flavors and smells and appearance, and pay attention to that moment when continuing is no longer sublimely pleasurable. It's amazing how wonderful real food tastes when eaten slowly (and how nasty imitation food tastes under the same conditions!) and how easy it is to stop eating when you have fulfilled your need for pleasure as well as for nourishment. It's not a fast way to loss weight, but it is steady and enjoyable and will change your relationship with food forever.

Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2007-09-18
I agree with other reviewers who have addressed that the recipes are mediocre at best, so no need to go into detail on that point. Two other things I really didn't like about this book: 1) The nutritional information lists net carbs. I need to know total carbs, so using recipes with the nutritional information provided for convenience is impossible with this book. 2) There are dozens of recipes that are not slow-cooker recipes. I don't begrudge a few, but in a cookbook devoted to the slow-cooker, I don't want to see recipes that require only a skillet!
Everyday Low Carb Slow Cooker Cookbook.......2007-09-08
This book is a great book. I have made many delicious meals from this book
Simple and wholesome.......2007-03-25
This book contains many meals that are wonderful even if you aren't on a low-carb diet - and they're fabulous if you are. The recipes are simple and wholesome.
High calories.......2007-03-13
I just received this book and the receipes do sound delicious, but I am surprised to see how high in calories the servings are. Although I'm doing low-carb, I want to try to keep the calories in a reasonable range and these recipes see quite high.
Still Waiting.......2007-03-09
I can't review this item. I have yet to receive it. I sent an email to the dealer and am still waiting for a response.

Customer Reviews:
They taste as good as they look...........2007-10-05
Those are Alley's wonderful Korean-Style Ribs on the cover. So easy and so good. This week I'm trying her Bratwurst/Red Cabbage/Apples and her Yankee Pot Pie.
Alley's techniques are simple, but for the best flavor, most do require around 30 minutes prep time. Believe me, I've found it worth it.
If I had just one slow cooker book, it would be one of hers.
A slowcooker newbie, starting out slowly..........2007-08-23
I just bought a slowcooker, after a lot of thought (since the last thing I need is another unused appliance to clutter up a small kitchen.)
I wanted to get a cookbook that would inspire me to use the thing, so I ordered this book BEFORE I got the slowcooker.
It seems reasonable, like stuff that's easy to do (I don't find the recipes here to be onerous, but then, I never just dumped stuff in a pot and let it cook without watching it.) So for a first timer to slow cooking, the book cautiously inspired me to take a chance and try it.
We'll see if I become a slowcooker convert, but so far - with this book - it looks like smooth sailing.
OK.......2007-08-15
Cook books are hard to review fairly unless you tried all the recipes. The few I did try came out fine.
Awesome Slow Cooker Cookbook!.......2007-03-23
I have this book and the author's other slow-cooker cookbook, and they are wonderful! The recipes are easy to follow, smell incredible while cooking and taste delicious. This is NOT an "open-the-can and dump it in your crock pot" type cookbook. The recipes call for fresh ingredients. Sometimes the author suggests you brown meats before placing them in the cooker, but as she states in her introduction this step is not required. It's a recommendation.
My favorite recipes from this book are the pulled pork and chicken adobo. Many recipes from the book are now a part of my repetoire of regularly cooked meals.
I've learned a lot from this book regarding making "gourmet" slow-cooker meals and am so glad I own this book and the author's other book. Another bonus is it has some excellent pictures throughout.
For the price, you definitely can't go wrong with this book. If you love food that tastes delicious and you own a slow cooker, you will be happy to have this book as a part of your collection of recipes.
Slow Cooking for Company.......2007-01-06
If you're looking for recipes where you just dump everything in the slow cooker, this book may not be for you. However, the prep work isn't onerous and the recipes that I've tried have been tasty.

Customer Reviews:
A few great recipes, but not the usual fabulous Williams and Sonoma........2007-06-10
As with everything Williams and Sonoma, I was expecting this to blow my socks off, but not so much. Some very good recipes, but a little lacking in my opinion.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
I have tried several recipies and all were beyond wonderful. There are beautiful pictures in this book as well. The book is sectioned by prep time (15 vs. 30 min hands on) and I found that to be pretty accurate. I like browning meats prior to slow cooking anyway because it brings out the flavor, so that time is to be expected. There are some standards and some recipies that were new and exciting. A great addition to my collection.
Small Book, Fancy Recipes.......2007-01-29
Alot of the recipes in this book look interesting and tasty, but I'm not sure if I'll ever make some of the recipes, such as the duck recipe. Nice book to add to my collection though.
love this book.......2007-01-23
i love this cookbook, it's so easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. the only thing to be aware of is the recipes are for a 7 qt crock pot. mine is only 3 1/2, so i just halve the recipes.
SLOW COOKING THAT WILL TAKE LOTS OF YOUR TIME!.......2007-01-11
If you're looking for something quick ... just throw everything in the pot & leave for the day ... this is not the cookbook for you. Most recipes require the ingredients be browned, simmered, sauted, & the pan deglazed with juice, wine, etc. before item can be tucked into the crock for a day of slow cooking. Even the vegetables need to be sauted. These are all very good recipes, but more suited to a good iron casserole simmering on top of the stove.
The last third of the 100 page book is filled with oven, grill & top of stove recipes.
Book Description
People love the convenience of their slow cookers. What could be better than walking in the door after a hard day's work to the smell of beef stew, ready and waiting? A beef stew that only requires three ingredients, that's what!
The problem with most slow cooker recipes is that they require lots of ingredients and steps before you actually "fix it and forget it." Not this book-these are truly simple recipes, and best of all, they are memorable, not mushy!
You'll find recipes like:
*Rosemary Lamb Stew
*Chicken Curry
*Three-Alarm Chili
*Spicy Pot Roast with Onions
*Coq au Vin
*Pork Roast with 40 Cloves of Garlic
Plus, you'll find recipes for desserts like cheesecake and custard and appetizers like chicken wings and artichoke dip!

Less fuss is a must!.......2007-10-09
After a busy day or lazy day using so few ingrients allows you less preparation mess and quicker ready to cook meals.
Super Easy, Quick Receipes.......2007-05-06
This cookbook is full of quick to prepare yummy meals! My family loves what comes out of the crock pot and I love the fact that I'm not stuck in the kitchen at 4:30 making dinner!
Not just for pot roasts!.......2006-01-18
I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. I was one of those people who thought slow cookers were just for pot roasts. Not so. In addition to main entrees, Bonet includes recipes for beverages, breakfasts, and desserts. I never would have thought to try some of the foods she suggests in my slow cooker. For example, I tried the Breakfast Casserole and it turned out great! Plus, I enjoyed not having to cook breakfast in the morning. It was nice to have it ready and waiting for me when I got up.
I've also tried the Peachy Chicken and it was good too. Next on my list are the recipes for Santa Fe Chicken and Acorn Squash. I'm glad I have this cookbook. I think I'm really going to save some time!
Not a Cook and I like this Book.......2006-01-04
I received this book as a gift. I'm not a cook; therefore, people buy books like this for me. This particular one is quite useful. The first few sections have short but to the point information about cooking with a slow cooker. My sister-in-law and I tried the Santa Fe Black Bean recipe with mild salsa, and it had a nice balanced flavor. We were both reading the recipes and many look easy and sound like good eating. Ms. Bonet adds lots of notes with extra suggestions at the bottom to dress up the food. I've ended up ordering 4 copies of this book--one for my sister-in-law. Ms. Bonet did a nice job with this book.

Crockpots Rule... But This Cookbook Does Not........2006-11-30
Vegan crockpotting is the best thing ever. This cookbook was not my first foray into this made-for-lazy-people-like-me brand of cooking that is sweeping the nation; after finding countless creative, delicious and easy recipes for free on the internets, I thought it would be nice to have a book to consult, rather than the unglamorous and dangerous way I'd prop my laptop on the kitchen counter to consult as a I dropped things in my crockpot.
There's no delicate or easy way to say it: This cute little cookbook basically stinks. First of all, there aren't very many recipes, but the worst part is that the recipes aren't very tastey or interesting---and they heavily rely on very processed foods like "canned vegan gravy" (what the heck is that?) and "vegan sausage" (gag). I am giving this two stars because if you are brand spankin' new to crock-potting, and don't give a darn that your food is not especially nutritious or interesting, then heck: this might be the perfect cookbook for you.
There's a terrific database of WONDERFUL vegan crockpot recipes on the fatfreevegan dot blogspot dot com website that'll make you want to crockpot until your fingers bleed. This one will only inspire you to put your crockpot back for another thirty years, which you absolutely should not do. Trust me.
Dynamite Comes in Small Packages.......2006-11-15
This little cookbook is AMAZING! Every recipe I have tried is delicious and unbelievably easy. I highly recommend Italian Sausage and Peppers - hearty and just the right amount of spice. The Portabella Stroganoff was a bit expensive to make, but well worth it - my family went wild over it. For an easy dish, make the Mushroom Parmesan soup. In the Irish section, you must try Vegan Shepherd's Pie - I used homemade mashed potatoes and it was to die for. Finally, the Tangerine Tofu is exquisite. I hope Michelle Rivera writes another cookbook soon!
Simple is as simple does.......2006-04-28
Nothing fancy here, but if you need a few quick slow-cooker recipes always on hand, well, here you go. I especially like the stuffed peppers. I found this did the trick as far as comfort food that reminded me of my dear old mum.
As for the real cook, why would you need a cookbok anyway? Go to culinary school. Open a restaurant where people - including a deer-hunting grandfater - actually want to eat.
Not a happy buyer.......2006-03-11
I've made 2 of the recipes so far and am reluctant to try more. If I had known what I now know BEFORE I bought the book, I'd never have bought it.
The first recipe was a complete bomb: the Tofu and Vegetable Curry, p. 105. I found it too hot and also bitter. Thin, watery gravy; very hot; and a nasty, bitter taste -- yuck! I love curries, but this was by far the worst I've ever tasted. I'll never make it again!
The Butternut Squash Soup, p. 98, was a little better. I liked it, but my husband didn't and wouldn't eat it (complained of a sour-milk taste). The soy milk and perhaps also the margarine had curdled over the long hours of cooking. And since cut-up squash isn't available in my town, the recipe took an hour of hard work, mostly to dismember a fresh butternut squash. I'll make this again when I can find cut-up squash, but I'll leave out the soy milk and margarine during the slow cooking. When the slow cooking is done, I'll puree the soup, then add the soy milk and margarine, and reheat gently on the stovetop. I think this will avoid the curdling and yield a creamier product.
My recommendation to others: don't waste your money on this clunker.
Unimpressive.......2006-02-14
As a vegan for almost 10 years, and someone who loves to cook, I am constantly searching for new cookbooks. While the recipes in this book were easy to follow, the few that I tried did not taste very good. I tried four of the recipes, being faithful to the instructions. The recipes seemed to rely on an overdose of spices. I was not impressed. Simple, yes. Tasty, no.

A step in the right direction.......2007-02-07
Most of the suggestions form the book seem reasonable to me as a means to improve blood sugar. The main problem with the book is that is dated and in need of an update. For example the book says that Splenda would be very hard to find which is hardly the case anymore and does not mention newer products such a PGX for blood sugar control. Otherwise most of the suggestions are probably valid. I would have given 5 stars but for the out of date issue.
DIP: Simple Guide to better health.......2003-03-22
I was surprised by the simple straight forward approach to the problems that must be addressed to live well with diabetes. This book contains clear sound approaches to nutrition, life style and overall health issues related to the diabetic condition.
Great praise for this book.......2001-12-28
After hunting through many diabetic books for a gift for a friend of mine, I finally chose this one. My friend called me immediately and said it was the best gift she had ever received -she had read it backwards and forwards and had even highlighted it. She said it was extremely helpful (she is dealing with her diabetes naturally after experiencing prescription side effects) and is putting it's advice and recipes to use daily.
The Diabetes Inprovement Program.......2001-12-04
This book was a quick and easy but valuable read.
It addresses diabetes in understandable terms, explains the glycemic index, discusses nutrition (diet), excersise, and the useful addition of nutritional supplements in the diabetic diet.
It notes a group of what the author defines as 'Super Foods' which can have profound positive bearing on the diabetic status, and includes a small selection of recipes.
The book also contains a very useful section that address 25 different sweeteners; basic and comparative information I have sought after for some time - all nicely compiled in one place.
I feel the information provided in this book on nutritional supplements, sweeteners and 'Super Foods' make it a valuable resource for anyone with diabetes or anyone responsible for providing meals for diabetics.

I have gone through a lot of slow cooker recipe books, but this one has proven itself to be one of the best. It's packed full of quick and easy (but most importantly TASTY!) recipes. The author has included a wide variety of dishes, as well - anything you can think of is in this one. Definitely a must for the slow cooker enthusiast! You'll be hard-pressed to find a better one.
Excellent Cook Book!.......2006-09-01
This book is a wonderful collection of recipes for the slow cooker. There are a great variety of recipes in this book. Definitely a must have for the busy family as you can prepare the meal before work and have a hot meal waiting for you at home. Using a crock pot slow cooker is especially nice during the summer months so you can still have a good meal without having to heat up the whole house with an oven. So this book gives you a nice selection of meals to try and choose from. This book is definitely a family favorite.
