Look before you buy.......2007-08-13
Since this is a cookbook, I should have looked through a copy before I purchased. Many of the recipes do not feature a full day of cooking in the crockpot. Therefore, they can't be used on a workday.
A Few great Recipes.......2007-08-08
I made a few recipes from this cook book that turned out great, and another few that weren't great at all. There was a lot of variety and different/new ideas, but it was not ideal for someone that is using the slow cooker to save time. A lot of the recipes involved a lot of ingredients, a lot of pre-cooking things before they went in the cooker, and also additional steps involved during the cooking (ex: after 2 hours turn the slow cooker on low,etc.)... and all of these things make it difficult for the cook who is away all day at work to even attempt. Also, many of the recipes called for short cooking times, like 3-4 hours, and that isn't ideal for a person who is working outside of the home for 9 hours prior to dinner.
Great Recipes - Great Cookbook!.......2007-08-05
I love this book! I recently purchased several cookbooks on slow cooking for use in a class I was teaching and this was my favorite on the subject for several reasons.
I like cookbooks that are organized so that I can find what I'm looking for fast. This book has good organized chapters and a terrific index which makes it possible for me to find whatever I'm looking for in just a few seconds.
I like the variety of recipes contained in this book, over 350 of them, for both the traditional dishes we have always cooked in our slow cookers like soups, stews, chilies, and pot roasts, and also for dishes that I hadn't thought of cooking in a slow cooker like desserts, jams, sauces, and casseroles. Actually, the thing that caught my eye and was one of the main reasons for buying this book was a chapter with instructions on cooking polenta, risotto, grits, rice, and other grains. Once I had prepared polenta in my slow cooker according to the directions in this book, I was hooked! I will never again have to stand over a hot stove stirring polenta for 40 minutes or more; nor will I ever have to stir my risotto or grits either!
I have many cookbooks in my library that are disappointing just because they read like a laundry list of recipes; there are no comments such as what to serve the dish with, or helpful hints, or little blurbs on how the recipe came about. The comments preceding a recipe help me as the reader get a glimpse of the author's reasons for putting the particular recipe in the book, or a description on the recipe such as "this is a hearty thick soup, perfect for a cool evening," or what to serve the dish with. Those comments make the book readable for those of us who enjoy reading cookbooks like novels, and help those who hate to cook decide if a recipe is suitable for their particular purpose. This book has comments preceding every recipe which are very helpful.
I think this book is an excellent choice for cooks of all skill levels. It contains all of the preliminary information a cook needs to begin slow cooking, even for someone who hasn't done it before. It discusses what slow cooking actually is, cooking times, temperatures, cooking at high altitudes, safety, adapting regular recipes to a slow cooker, and numerous other helpful subjects. This book also has conversion charts and it even has a page that lists the manufacturers of slow cookers and their web sites.
The one drawback that I can see for this book is that there are no pictures. Many of us are visual cooks and would like to see what a dish is supposed to look like. That isn't possible with this book, and is the only thing that would prevent me from purchasing several copies for wedding and shower gifts; I feel like gift books are better if they have pictures. I do plan however, to purchase three more copies to give to my daughters; the recipes in this book are so easy and good it may help them avoid stopping for fast food so often and improve the nutrition and health of my grandchildren
Is ketchup a recipe ingredient to you?.......2007-07-19
Your answer to the question will determine whether you like this book. I almost purchased this book, and then found it at the library to look at first. I found 4 recipes that I would consider making. One recipe (but not one of the 4) listed ketchup as a recipe ingredient, and others listed similar prepared processed sauces likely to have lots of sugar. Its probably fine for someone using the crock pot to save time and bother - but I like to know the ingredients, and ketchup doesn't cut it for me.
Start cookin'!.......2007-07-12
This is a great book, but I didn't look close enough. For the price (under $8.00) I was expecting a small book with a few recipes and didn't really review the listing. This is a thick book with a number of categories, including many you wouldn't expect in a slow cooker cookbook. Good book...Great value...Easy recipes!

LOVE THIS COOKBOOK - .......2007-10-05
I really like Sandra Lee on TV and have watched her make super meals for some time.....I however just purchased all of her cookbooks in the last year and anxiously await all of the new ones that are coming in the next few months. I am a super busy woman & really like her approach to all of the different cultures. We travel often and I pull these out & re-visit our memories with Sandra's easy recipes. Thanks for these....millions adore her & I know why.
What good is it if you can't get the ingredients.......2007-09-30
I thought the recipes sounded wonderful, however I was very disappointed that a large portion required some pre-cooking either on the stove or in the oven. Not quite what I had in mind. I bought this to carry us over during a kitchen renovation, but apparently I need a stovetop and oven. Rather false advertising.
Also, the vast majority of the recipes are supposed to cook much less than 8 hours. If you're looking for something to make while you're at work, this ain't it!
But, the biggest issue I had with this is that for over half the recipes there is always one ingredient that I can't find. The Knorr seasoning packets she requires are apparently so unpopular that no grocery stores in my area carry them. I even did web searches and they are either unavailable, or you have to buy 12 at a time. That's a big commitment to try something.
Waste of money.
Practical Semi-Homemade.......2007-07-03
Sandra Lee makes easy to prepare but taste-tempting meals. I can hardly wait to try almost all of these recipes. I do not like to spend all day in the kitchen and when I can start out with something that only needs to be embellished, that is my kind of food. I am delighted with this book.

Sandra Lee Semi Homemade Slow Cooker Recipes.......2007-06-28
This cook book is great. The recipes are quick and they taste great. I just spent a whole week cooking her recipes and loved every minute. These recipes get you out of the kitchen fast. I am also giving these recipes to my daughter who is getting married in a few weeks. They are easy for working moms,by the time you get home your dinner is ready for you.
Crock Pot cooking is so easy.......2007-05-23
I love Sandra Lee and her crock pot cookbook is easy to use and again all the recipes use stuff that you already might have on hand. You basically just have to add the meat and vegetables.

I've been looking for this for 30 years..........2007-10-09
I have purchased thousands and thousands of dollars worth of cooking stuff looking for the magic item that would take food from the cupboard and place it cooked and delicious on the table. I hate to cook, but with this book and a 1-1/2 quart cooker I look forward to cooking and eating. All of the ingredients are fresh and easy to obtain.
I just ordered the 3 quart cooker, and wish I had done so up front; there are several recipes that won't go in the smaller size, and I don't want to miss any of them.
I only wish I had discovered this when my son was at home. When I think of what he had to endure... To make up for it, I'll give him the small cooker and copy of this book.
Perfect for working singles and couples.......2007-10-01
As someone who lives alone and works extremely long hours, I don't always have a lot of time to cook. Unfortunately, I had begun to rely on either fast food (unhealthy) or convenience foods from the supermarket (expensive). Purchasing this book and a $15.00 dollar oval slow cooker has done wonders for my schedule, my budget, and my LDL cholesterol.
Just what I was looking for.......2007-08-19
This cookbook is perfect for my daughter, who has just gotten her first apartment. With winter coming, I know she has the "tool" she needs to whip up her favorite soups, stews and chilis or simply to have a nice home-cooked meal ready for her when she returns from a full day of classes.
Delicious Recipes for 2!.......2007-08-02
This book is great for two people: it's the perfect amount for my boyfriend and I. We bought the 4-Quart Rival slow cooker (I wanted the option to cook for more people) which is a little larger than the ones she recommends, but so far, everything has tasted great. Some dishes we have tried:
Vegetable Chili con Carne: This tasted great and it's a great way to get your day's worth of veggies (also includes lean ground beef). Usually chilis are all meat, beans, or veggies--this is a little bit of everything for a well-balanced meal.
Vegetable Polenta: Made this last night with some grilled pork and a salad--it was excellent! The mascarpone cheese adds a creamy flavor, which makes this polenta perfect.
Orange Teriyaki Chicken- The flavors of this chicken are so flavorful and they compliment each other well. Be careful not to overcook as I did, but still the chicken is so moist and flavorful that it almost didn't matter.
Hot Pepper Cornbread (non-slow cooker recipe): This bread accompanied our veggie chili and was good but it turned out a little flat--next time I would add a little more baking soda than the pinch it calls for.
Overall, this book is easy enough for a beginner cook and for those who don't want to prepare an army's worth of food.
good value.......2007-07-27
Every recipe I have tried has been a success, although the serving sizes
are certainly more than two people can usually eat. Absolutely worth it!

What an AWESOME book!!.......2007-10-02
I received this cookbook last Christmas from one of my clients. I LOVE this book! I have made SO many of the recipes. Better Homes and Gardens sure knows how to make a dinner flavorful. I purchased this book to give to another VERY busy individual who also has a family that depends on them for dinner. Put the ingredients in and you are DONE!! Some recipes require browning of the meat. Please do this. It makes it VERY tasty.
definitely alot of variety in recipes..........2007-10-01
Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens)
The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that you REALLY don't know what you're getting until you have it in hand and you're reading it...This cookbook is no different...I expected alot of crockpot recipes, but I didn't expect some of the recipes with such unusual ingredient combinations...And what's with adding mushrooms so much or making it spicy hot so much *ICK*...you know, just because you CAN mix things together, it doesn't mean you SHOULD...Oh well, for what it is, it's a good cookbook but it could be better so 4 out of 5 stars it is!
yummy food.......2007-08-11
I am enjoying this cookbook. Out of the last about 6 recipes I tried, I liked 5 of them so that's pretty good!
Great meals.......2007-06-08
I highlight all the favorites and there are lots to highlight in this simple to make cookbook.
It's OK, .......2007-04-14
I was looking for more basic and simple recipes that it seems to eschew.

If I owned just one slow cooker book, this would be it........2007-10-07
Alley's book works best for those of us who have time for preparation, but as she points out, the browning steps can be skipped if need be, but expect a less complex flavor.
Here are a few sample recipes that I've tried and liked: Chicken Piperade [chicken with bell peppers], Tarragon Chicken, French Split Pea Soup, Italian Pot Roast, White Truffle Risotto, Bread Pudding, Tuscan White Bean Soup, Baked Eggplant.
Her tips are useful, her recipes simple, and most importantly for a slow cooker book, the timing and amounts work out.
One of the best!.......2007-09-12
This is a great slowcooker cookbook. I have owned this book for a year and a half and use it regularly. My kids ages 7 and 9 LOVE many of these recipes. Yes, the meals do require prep, but who wants to eat slop that gets thrown in the pot all at once?! I prep everything the night before, put the slowcooker insert in the refrigerator, and then just pop it in the slowcooker in the morning. Not a big deal.
I highly recommend this book for those looking for something more than the tired old "cream of mushroom"-type recipes.
slow cooker cookbbook.......2007-08-12
Many of the recipes look good but take a little prep before throwing everything in the cooker.
Unique tasty recipes.......2007-08-11
I agree with another, not enough recipes - the opposite of the 'Fix it and Forget it' books, which have too many. Also, in contrast to those books, there are only a couple in here that you can actually fix in the morning and leave all day, but then they do taste better than those. Most are ready to eat in less than an avg workday, and require too much prep for a workday morn (suggestion - make as much as possible ahead the night before). I've tried 4 recipes so far, and they have all been better than your average crock pot dish. I've had difficulty getting the spice level right - 2 I made were lacking in salt quite a bit, one was way too spicy. I really like the uniqueness of the recipes. The best cookbook I've found for crockpots. Oh, I also like that most have a picture - I'm a very visual person...
Not What I was expecting........2007-05-10
Really did not have the recipes I wanted or was looking for.

Long on looks, short on substance.......2007-09-01
Each recipe takes up a full page and is accompanied by a full-page illustration, so the book is quite handsome, but has very few recipes compared to a standard cookbook. The recipes it does have rely too much on specialized, processed products that I, for one, do not keep on hand in my kitchen. Another drawback is that most of these supposedly healthy recipes are extremely high in sodium, which makes them unacceptable to me. I returned this book.
Essential Slow Cooking Recipe Collection.......2007-07-20
Here is the Cooking Light 57 essential recipes for slow cooking. As other slow cooking cookbooks, this covers the bases: appetizers, desserts, main dishes, etc.
The layout is exceptional: clean with two pages per recipe, with one page full color photo. Other nice feature (especially for the cook not too familiar with certain ingredients or techniques) is a highlighted ingredient or technique, e.g. water bath, kitchen shears, rice wine vinegar, etc.
So far tried the following and turned out remarkably nice, easy to prepare and equally nice to dine: Turkey Thights with Olives and Dried Cherries; Pesto Lasagna with Spinach and Mushrooms; Chicken with Figs and Lemons; Fudgy Caramel Pudding Cake; Thai-Style Pork Stew.
This is not meant to be an exhaustive collection for slow cooker, but the pick of the crop, what the editors have determined to be 'essential' recipes for the slow cooker.
Nice to have in collection.
Disappointing .......2007-05-26
I expected better from Cooking Light. This book is very different from the creativity and general reliability of the magazine. Obviously not written by the editors. It uses too many commerical short cuts, processed products, and the recipes do not look "light" at all. Visually it is poorly styled and photographed and produced on cheap paper. There are much better slow cooker cookbooks, and anyone with a little cooking experience can adjust to lighten them up. I'll stick with the magazine - they have a section on slow cookers. This book is not worth the money.
Easy slow cooker.......2007-03-31
Easy, tasty recipes for a slow cooker that outline the nutritional information for each meal
Love this cookbook.......2007-03-26
I absolutely love this cookbook. It makes delicious meals in the slow cooker -- just fix it and forget it!

The search goes on..........2007-09-25
There were a few things that I did like about this cookbook - the photographs, the binding (hardcover with spiral binding inside), etc... Unfortunately what I didn't like was the most important part - the food.
I'll be up front, I've never liked the flavor and textures of vegetables made in a crock pot - everything just seems to get mushy. I only tried a handful of recipes and was disappointed with all of them. Even when the texture wasn't so much of an issue, the flavors were all wrong. I'm sure that there are some good recipes in here as I can see that quite a few people are happy with this cookbook - but this book is not for me.
This is the only cookbook (and I have well over 100 in my collection) that I've actually given away. The search for good crock pot recipes continues.
betty crockers slow cookers cook book.......2007-06-27
Receipes are out dated and there is not enough variety in the selection of dishes that are in this cook book. Would most likely cook 2 or 3 of the dishes in this book. Expected a lot more from some one like Betty crocker
Betty Crocker's Slow Cookbook.......2007-06-27
This was a replacement for one that got lost in a house move. I'd been missing it as now other slow cookbook comes close. Lovely clear recipes and easy to adapt to British measurements.
WONDERFUL.......2007-06-21
This is one of my most used slow cooker cookbooks. I like everything about it. It is great that it is spiral bound. I have used many of the recipes and every one of them has turned out delicious. The cooking times listed are just about right. Some of the recipes may have too much salt, so I use my judgment and just decrease it a bit. After all, it is easy to add salt at the table if necessary. However, sometimes the recipe will say to use either wine OR beef broth or something similar. That, of course, changes the amount of salt necessary, so I need to adjust accordingly. I love how the proper size of each slow cooker is mentioned for each recipe. So many cookbooks don't mention that, and you just have to figure it out based on the number of servings.
I love this cookbook and I think it is one of the best slow cooker cookbooks available.
Betty Crocker's Slow Cooker Cookbook.......2007-02-13
Most of the recipes have numberous ingredients that increase the time of food preperation and negates the purpose of using a slow cooker to have simple meals.
Book Description
By now the remarkable convenience of the slow cooker is no secret. It keeps the kitchen cool on warm days and is inexpensive and durable. At last, vegetarians and anyone looking for healthy meal alternatives can take full advantage of this amazing appliance.

love it!.......2007-10-08
to all those considering buying this book, consider no more!
what a gift it is to make great tasting vegan food in about 15 minutes (because that is really all of your labor that is required) and 6-8 hours later...yum! after trying three recipes from this book, i bought a 4qt. cooker in addition to my programable 6 qt.
i have not been sorry. i love how the flavors deepen with slow cooking and no standing over a stove and stirring. i used to get sick of "tasting" what i was making before it even hit the table. the recipes are also dependable. tonight we are having stuffed acorn squash, and i know it's going to be delicious!
Doesn't deliver.......2007-10-03
I received this book as a gift. At first glance the recipes looked good, but what I was really looking for was easy wholesome veggie recipes. Instead the recipes and take more work than I have time for and use a lot of fake meat (soy) which we do not eat in our house. The 5 or 6 recipes we did make were not even that tasty. I will get my vegetarian slow recipes from internet searches from now on. I will be giving this book away.
Awesome slow cooker recipes!.......2007-08-21
I love this book! It has great recipes. My favorite by far is the mac and cheese forentine (it's vegan, the cheese sauce is cashews and white beans). Highly recommended, love it!
easy, delicious, and healthy.......2007-08-07
I bought a slow cooker after reading a copy of this book which I got from my library, then bought the book for myself, and later, a copy for my mother. I use this book atleast once a week and it has made maintaining a healthy vegan diet incredibly easy. I purchased a digital appliance timer for my slow cooker as recommended by the author, and am now able to cook while I sleep, when I'm at work, or outside. If you are a busy, active person with little time to spend in the kitchen, but insist on uncomplicated, delicious, healthy vegan meals with lots of variety, this is the book for you. I highly recommend the Breville slow cookerBreville 5.3 Qt Gourmet Slow Cooker SLC70XLif you are looking for a reliable slow cooker to accommodate the recipes in this cook book.
EXCELLENT PURCHASE.......2007-07-24
I was very reluctant to purchase this cookbook based on previous feedbacks given. I'm glad I went ahead and bought it.
I have made the Spicy Black Bean Chili, the Maple Baked Beans, and the Good Morning Millet Melange. Right now the Perfect Hominy White Bean Chili is cooking in the crockpot. All of these recipes have been delicious.
I plan to try a lot more recipes in the cookbook and have the ingredients written down on my shopping list for the next 2 recipes I want to try "Not Your Mama's Pot Roast" and " Tempeh Etoufee".
The author certainly knows how to make the flavors come together in the recipes I have tried so far.
I have an inexpensive older 4 quart crockpot and I'm satisfied with the results.
This cookbook was a good buy.
Book Description
Ah, the wonders of a slow cooker. After a long, hard day you can walk in the door and the aroma of a hot, home-cooked meal fills the air. You don't have to do that fast tango from fridge to pantry to stove and back again. It's nearly as good as having a personal chef!
But for the low-carb dieter, traditional slow cooker recipes can be a problem. Many of them depend on potatoes, noodles, rice, and starchy canned soups. And if you've tried to make up your own slow cooker recipes, you may have found the results less than compelling -- too often the food can be mushy, water-logged, and bland.
Fortunately, with 200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes, you can use your slow cooker and follow your low-carb diet, too!
Come home to:
Tuscan Chicken * Kashmiri Lamb Shanks * Teriyaki-Tangerine Ribs * Chicken Minestrone * Orange Rosemary Pork * Chipotle Brisket * Firehouse Chili * Thai Chicken Bowls * Braised Pork with Fennel * Pizza Stew * Morty's Mixed Meat Loaf * Low-Carb Slow Cooker Paella
But that's not all! The gentle, even heat of a slow cooker makes it the perfect way to cook many different kinds of foods. You'll make low-carb party treats like Hot Crab Dip and Glazed Chicken Wings, and snacks like Smokin' Chili Peanuts and Curried Pecans. It's the superior way to cook incredible sugar-free desserts like Mochaccino Cheesecake and Maple-Pumpkin Custard. And you've never had moister, more tender seafood than my Lime-Basted Scallops or Lemon-Mustard Salmon Steaks. Plus, every recipe lists the calories, protein, fiber, and usable carbs per serving, so you'll not only be in control of your life and your time, you'll be in control of your diet as well.
So go ahead, plug in your slow cooker, and look forward to coming home to a fabulous low-carb supper tonight!

Not good for South Beach Dieters.......2007-09-28
I gave this one star without even trying a recipe. While this book has a good variety of recipes which are "low carb", if you are following South Beach, don't buy it! It uses lots of butter, cream and fatty meats! I will be returning my copy.
Good, not great.......2007-06-12
I found about 10 or 15 recipes that I would actually use, and have tried a few and they were very good. Maybe that is par for the course with cookbooks , and considering the reasonable cost I'm not complaining. I'm happy to find some interesting, low carb recipes, for a slow cooker.
Lots of Great Recipes!!.......2007-06-08
I really enjoyed this book. Lots of ideas and nothing too complicated. Great for busy households who are also worried about weight. The whole family likes the recipes.
They don't all taste the same........2007-03-31
Sick of crockpot recipes all tasting the same? This recipe book for slow cookers avoids this with plenty of low carb recipes perfect for anyone on a low-carb eating plan.
3 Strikes your Out.......2007-03-16
I don't usually write reviews, but had to speak out about this book. I I really enjoy using my slow cooker (and use it a lot) and was very excited to try the recipes in this book. I made 3 recipes from this book, the kashmir lamb, the chicken in coconut milk and Hot Asian Pork Ribs. Not one of the recipes turned out well enough to say I would make them again. The taste just wasn't there in these recipes. The descriptions on how good they were was way off in my opinion. Word of warning on the lamp shanks, they smell awful when cooking on low which I was not aware of. We ended up throwing the whole dinner out because of the smell alone.

Too "gourmet" for me.......2007-09-01
This is not a book for someone like me who wants to put together a meal quickly before leaving for work in the morning. Although most slow cooker recipes nowadays do require some advance preparation, such as browning meat or chicken, I draw the line at toasting seeds in a frying pan and then grinding them in a mortar and pestle. I can see where it would be a good book for someone with the time and inclination to do gourmet cooking, though, and it does provide a lot of nutritional information and tips.
The Healthy Slow Cooker: More than 100 Dishes for Health and Wellness.......2007-07-16
The Healthy Slow Cooker contains over 100 healthy recipes that can be made using a crock pot. These recipes include main meal dishes for every meal as well as deserts. Each recipe is complete with full instructions, tips, make ahead ideas, and nutritional information. There is even a chart at the back of the book detailing the American and Canadian Diabetes Association Values of each dish.
Like many people, there are days when I just can't face making a meal after a long hard day. At that point, nutrition pretty much goes out the window and fast food becomes an option. I like the slow cook alternative, particular those delicious, quick to prepare recipes that I can throw in the cooker at the start of the day and have ready for supper. That these meals are actually nutritious is an added bonus. Any recipe that actually reduces chaos and that my family actually likes to eat gets high marks from me.
healthy recioes for crokpot cooking.......2007-04-02
All the recipes I've tried so far have been good and are healthy.
Wonderful Cookbook.......2007-03-16
If you don't mind some prep time, this is an amazing cookbook. The author really did a great job with guidance on so many levels - how to prepare, when you can prepare parts of the recipe ahead (and how), what the nutritional values are, etc. I haven't had a single recipe come out poorly, and I am no cook.
may not be what you're looking for.......2007-01-26
I was disappointed that it didn't have a wide variety of recipes. They all have a similar flair to them, and all require more prep time than I really wanted for crock pot cooking! In the end, I say forget your pressure cooker and check out The Best of Cooking Light. These are simple, easy to prepare recipes, wide variety, and everything has been excellent so far. Anyway, good luck!
